President Trump is in Europe to meet with G7 leaders. As the Wall Street Journal tells us,
Apple News Narrator
one topic is front and center for allied countries.
Alex Ward
Iran was already on the docket, but obviously having a deal in place, or presumably a deal in place, as all sides say, that is now going to dominate the agenda.
Apple News Narrator
The looming crisis facing Social Security and
Gideon Resnick
one of the World Cup's oldest stars
Apple News Narrator
helps a tiny island nation make history.
Gideon Resnick
It's Tuesday, June 16th. I'm Gideon Resnick in for shmit to
Apple News Narrator
this is Apple News today.
Gideon Resnick
President Trump landed in France yesterday for
Apple News Narrator
the annual G7 summit, fresh off the announcement of a tentative deal with Iran to end the war, open the Strait of Hormuz and to start nuclear negotiations.
Gideon Resnick
Trump says the language of the agreement
Apple News Narrator
will be released Friday, which is fueling a lot of questions from US Allies,
Alex Ward
mainly, okay, how is this gonna get implemented? How is it gonna hold?
Gideon Resnick
Alex Ward covers national security for the Wall Street Journal. He's on the ground of the G7
Apple News Narrator
and told us about the questions that are dominating discussions so far now.
Alex Ward
How do you get Israel to not launch more attacks on Hezbollah and Lebanon? How do you ensure Iran doesn't violate? What do you even think these technical talks over the next two months are going to look like? This is a starting gun, right?
Gideon Resnick
Iran and the US Are complicating the
Apple News Narrator
picture with opposing assessments of what the agreement includes.
Gideon Resnick
Iranian state media is reporting that the
Apple News Narrator
deal would involve Israel's withdrawal from Lebanon, that it would give Tehran control of the Strait of Hormuz, and that it does not require Iran to commit to new curbs on its nuclear program. The US has called those reports false.
Gideon Resnick
Vice President Vance explained to CNBC how
Apple News Narrator
negotiations might proceed over the upcoming 60 day window.
Vice President J.D. Vance
We have the diplomatic, economic and military leverage, but we also are extending an open hand to the Iranians and saying if you guys negotiate in good faith and you make that long term commitment not to develop nuclear weapons, then we are going to make sure that your country is successful.
Gideon Resnick
Meanwhile, there's been reporting of some major
Apple News Narrator
discontent among Israeli officials over the deal and the notion that it could hamper operations against Hezbollah.
Gideon Resnick
Israel's Defense minister said yesterday that their
Apple News Narrator
forces would not withdraw from Lebanon.
Gideon Resnick
Israel is not participating in the G7
Apple News Narrator
meetings, but Ward reports that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wants to schedule a meeting with Trump immediately.
Alex Ward
The Netanyahu government had been pretty clear that they didn't necessarily want a deal, that they felt that this was a moment to not only harm Iran, but perhaps push the regime out of power. But if the US Were to do a deal, it should be a deal that encompassed all of the things wanted, not just the nuclear stuff, but also Iran's support for proxy militias, including Hezbollah, Hamas, and the end to its production of ballistic missiles. This deal, as far as we understand, does not include all of those things.
Gideon Resnick
When asked about the deal on Monday, Netanyahu said that it was Trump's decision and that he had expressed his own opinion, adding that sometimes they see eye
Apple News Narrator
to eye and sometimes they do not.
Gideon Resnick
All of these mixed messages from the
Apple News Narrator
parties involved underscore something important to remember. This memorandum of understanding only lays the groundwork for talks. No final deal has been signed yet,
Gideon Resnick
and both Iran and the US have
Apple News Narrator
threatened to resume attacks if talks fail.
Gideon Resnick
Still, Ward says Trump is positioning the
Apple News Narrator
agreement as a done deal this week,
Gideon Resnick
and he's hoping to secure some commitments from G7 leaders that he hasn't been
Apple News Narrator
able to get yet.
Alex Ward
His ask will be can you help us demine the Strait of Hormuz? The US could do it probably on its own, but it's better with you have allies help spread the risk around. They've got other capabilities. And that, of course, if you recall, that was a sort of source of tension earlier, right? Trump asked allies hey, can you guys help police the Strait of Hormuz? And they said only after the war ends. So somewhat in fairness, Trump is going, the war has ended. Are you guys going to get involved?
Gideon Resnick
Yesterday, French President Emmanuel Macron, who is
Apple News Narrator
hosting this year's summit, said that his
Gideon Resnick
country is ready to take its fair
Apple News Narrator
share of the burden and could assist with helping to reopen the strait.
Gideon Resnick
A recent report on the future of Social Security is flashing some warning lights
Apple News Narrator
for beneficiaries and leading to calls for action in Congress just months before the midterm elections.
Gideon Resnick
The report released last week shows that
Apple News Narrator
the trust fund Social Security uses to pay out retirement and survivor benefits will
Gideon Resnick
begin depleting sooner than expected by 2032.
Apple News Narrator
Just six years from now, more than 68 million Americans will be getting a smaller payout unless Congress acts now.
Gideon Resnick
To be clear, this does not mean
Apple News Narrator
that Social Security would run out of money entirely. Rather, it means that people who receive these benefits could potentially start to get a smaller payout by roughly 22%.
Gideon Resnick
In other words, if the average American
Apple News Narrator
receives a $2,000 check every month starting in 2032, that benefit would be slashed down to just over $1,500.
Gideon Resnick
Business analyst Jill Schlesinger spoke with CBS
Apple News Narrator
about why this is happening.
Jill Schlesinger
Social Security is a pay as you go system, meaning workers pay for the people who are retired. When there are tons of baby boomers working. We built up extra money that we didn't actually have to pay out. There were so many people working. Now flipped on its head, the boomers are all retiring now. We don't have enough money of all those reserves that built up to actually pay out the promised benefits.
Gideon Resnick
That means without any action, younger generations could be left in a more challenging
Apple News Narrator
situation when it comes to future benefits,
Gideon Resnick
simply because more benefits have been paid
Apple News Narrator
out since the early 2010s than taxes received.
Gideon Resnick
The report has restarted a conversation on Capitol Hill about the necessity to do
Apple News Narrator
something here, with Republicans discussing some reforms and Democrats charging that the party is looking to cut benefits.
Gideon Resnick
House Speaker Mike Johnson said in a
Apple News Narrator
recent radio interview that he would make this a priority if Republicans retained control of Congress next year.
Sports Commentator
The reason we're in trouble is because over 74% of federal spending is on autopilot. Mandatory spending. That's your entitlement programs like Medicare, Medicaid and then things like Social Security. They have to be adjusted and fixed. We have a plan to do that next year, and it's critical.
Gideon Resnick
Some fiscal conservative Republicans have praised Johnson's
Apple News Narrator
approach, like Kentucky Senator Rand Paul, who
Gideon Resnick
talked about a plan he had on
Apple News Narrator
Fox earlier this month.
Senator Rand Paul
What I'm proposing is a bipartisan special committee in Washington, half Republicans, half Democrats, that says we have to do something before 2032 to avert this disaster. What can we do in a bipartisan way? I'm willing to do the work, and I'm still eager and pushing leadership to do something about this, though others in
Gideon Resnick
the party, like Missouri Senator Josh Hawley,
Apple News Narrator
have questioned the political viability of making changes to Social Security and whether some
Gideon Resnick
of the language about reform is just
Apple News Narrator
another word for cuts.
Gideon Resnick
President Trump, for his part, has previously
Apple News Narrator
pledged to not cut Social Security or Medicare benefits.
Gideon Resnick
But experts agree that Congress must do something before 2032, even if it's politically challenging. That could include raising the tax rate,
Apple News Narrator
lowering monthly benefit amounts or changing eligibility requirements.
Gideon Resnick
Former Treasury Secretary Jack Lew, who worked
Apple News Narrator
under the Obama administration, told Bloomberg that no matter which route Congress ultimately takes, it's important that lawmakers act quickly.
Former Treasury Secretary Jack Lew
Any solution that's really going to work requires some time to take effect. If you do things on the benefit side, even in a way that has a modest impact, long lead time is needed. If you do things on the revenue side, the same, you can't just say tomorrow we're going to close the gap. So it should be treated as an issue for today. Not an issue for 2032.
Gideon Resnick
A few senior bipartisan senators agreed with
Apple News Narrator
that sentiment, issuing a statement calling on Congress to act.
Gideon Resnick
But as the Hill notes, three out
Apple News Narrator
of four of those lawmakers will not be in the next Congress because they
Gideon Resnick
either lost reelection or they planned to retire. The AI company Anthropic has found itself
Apple News Narrator
in another conflict with the Trump administration.
Gideon Resnick
Last week, the White House took the
Apple News Narrator
extraordinary step of banning anyone who wasn't a US Citizen from accessing the company's latest models. Called Mythos and Fable. These tools have advanced cybersecurity capabilities like detecting bugs.
Gideon Resnick
But in the wrong hands, hackers could
Apple News Narrator
use that power to take advantage of software vulnerabilities.
Gideon Resnick
According to the Wall street journal, Vice President J.D. vance even expressed concern that the models
Apple News Narrator
could disrupt local infrastructure, like banks and even water plants.
Gideon Resnick
Anthropic stood by their safeguards, but in order to comply with a directive from
Apple News Narrator
the White House, they pulled the models completely.
Gideon Resnick
The company itself was actually the first
Apple News Narrator
to raise concerns about its latest work.
Gideon Resnick
As Semaphore's tech editor Reid Albergatti told
Reid Albergatti
us, they wanted the world to understand that this model posed a real threat to really democracy, to civilization, to markets, because it could be used by hackers to find vulnerabilities at a scale no one had ever seen before.
Gideon Resnick
The administration reportedly became concerned about the
Apple News Narrator
possibility of state actors exploiting the tools that prompted them to issue the restrictions, which have been seen as one of the strongest examples of US Government intervention into AI companies.
Reid Albergatti
Yet one thing we learned over the weekend was that one of the rationale for the administration doing this was that they had heard that China had gained access to this model via an organization with ties to the Chinese government. So that was, I think their fear was that this could fall into the hands of America's adversaries.
Gideon Resnick
Albergatti told us the whole incident was
Apple News Narrator
a shock to the rest of the
Gideon Resnick
world, which suddenly found itself cut off
Apple News Narrator
from a powerful technology overnight.
Gideon Resnick
Other countries have failed to develop companies
Apple News Narrator
to rival those that are coming out of Silicon Valley and China, leaving them exposed to the consequences of decisions like this one.
Reid Albergatti
Ultimately, this is American technology, and the US Government has been flexing their muscles here. I think there's been a big reminder that no, actually, like the US Government has a ton of power over any country that's operating within its borders, sometimes even outside of its borders.
Gideon Resnick
Now Anthropic is locked in talks with
Apple News Narrator
the administration as they search for a compromise that won't be easy, as Anthropic
Gideon Resnick
is already battling the government over how
Apple News Narrator
the Defense Department uses its software.
Gideon Resnick
It all comes at a vital time.
Apple News Narrator
Anthropic is preparing for a blockbuster ipo, and other AI companies are watching closely
Gideon Resnick
to see how the government might suddenly
Apple News Narrator
put the brakes on their work.
Reid Albergatti
If you just think about it logically, where this goes, if there's not some sort of compromise that allows Anthropic to continue offering these models, that they've spent billions upon billions of dollars training these things and developing them. If they can't go and sell them on the market, then there is no business there and these companies are trying to go public. So this is hugely important to the American economy. And it's just, you could say it's too big to fail or what have you, but it's too big to shut down.
Gideon Resnick
A group of cybersecurity executives and experts
Apple News Narrator
have asked the Trump administration to lift its restrictions, saying that the move could ultimately help adversaries more than it hurts them.
Gideon Resnick
Here are a few other stories we're following today. California governor Gavin Newsom claimed that he
Apple News Narrator
and his wife were under federal investigation yesterday.
California Governor Gavin Newsom
In recent days, federal agents have knocked on the doors of family, friends and former employees not because they found a crime, because they're simply trying to find one. They're demanding records. They're abusing the grand jury process, digging through years and years of random documents. Donald Trump isn't just coming after me because of my mean tweets. He's coming after me because I'm considering running for president.
Gideon Resnick
Newsom didn't provide details on the nature
Apple News Narrator
of the alleged probe, and the Justice Department did not comment on Monday.
Gideon Resnick
The accusations come following the federal prosecution
Apple News Narrator
of Newsom's former chief of staff, Dana Williamson. She pled guilty to corruption felonies, but the investigation revealed no misconduct by the governor.
Gideon Resnick
Newsom and Trump have clashed in recent
Apple News Narrator
years over various issues, including the deployment of National Guard troops to the state. Last summer, the UK Became the latest country to impose a social media ban for young people.
Gideon Resnick
This new ban would apply to British
Apple News Narrator
kids under the age of 16 and
Gideon Resnick
would be quite expansive, covering apps like
Apple News Narrator
Instagram, YouTube, TikTok and more.
Gideon Resnick
It follows similar World first legislation in
Apple News Narrator
Australia last year, which appears to have also inspired some US States. The policy might be a hit with parents. According to One poll by YouGov, almost 8 in 10 in the UK support the ban.
Gideon Resnick
But as the BBC discovered in an
Apple News Narrator
interview that went viral, kids were less than excited.
Child Interviewee
We looked at screen time. What was your screen time over the weekend? Nine hours. Nine hours. So suddenly you're going to have a lot more time to fill. And what will you do? Stare at a wall. Stare at a wall.
Gideon Resnick
Okay, but the proposal is not a silver bullet. One recent survey suggested that 7 out
Apple News Narrator
of 10 kids in Australia with a social media account had kept it despite their ban.
Gideon Resnick
And finally, at the World cup yesterday,
Apple News Narrator
a shocking upset as the tiny island nation of Cape Verde tamed a beast.
Sports Commentator
It's over.
Vice President J.D. Vance
It is a win in every possible
Apple News Narrator
way for Cape Verde in their first ever World cup game, a 00 draw
Sports Commentator
with the European champion Spain.
Gideon Resnick
Spain are among the favorites for the
Apple News Narrator
tournament, and this is Cape Verde's first ever appearance.
Gideon Resnick
The islanders have their goalkeeper Vozena, to
Apple News Narrator
thank for the result.
Gideon Resnick
At 40 years old, he's one of the oldest players registered, but he made
Apple News Narrator
some heroic saves to keep them in the game.
Gideon Resnick
Vozenya's stardom has shot up as well. Post match interviewers pointed out that his
Apple News Narrator
Instagram account had almost immediately gone from 50,000 to one and a half million followers.
Gideon Resnick
Now, there's usually a few upsets in
Apple News Narrator
the early games, but with the Tournament
Gideon Resnick
Expanded for 2026, this year's group stages
Apple News Narrator
could deliver some more heroes.
Gideon Resnick
Yet you can find all these stories
Apple News Narrator
and more in the Apple News app.
Gideon Resnick
And if you're already listening to the News app right now, we've got a narrated article coming up next. New York Magazine dives deep into the
Apple News Narrator
concept of gifted children and why some think the method of determining which kids are bright is flawed.
Gideon Resnick
If you're listening in the podcast app, you can follow Apple News Narrated to find that story.
Apple News Narrator
And I'll be back with the news tomorrow.
