Jerry, that was funny. I mean, we were you, you. For the people that might not be familiar, you wear at least a jacket on stage Most of the time.

[Ryan Hamilton]

It depends on where I'm at. But if I'm doing a theater, a good look for me is kind of like jeans and a jacket. But if I'm on the Road with Seinfeld, I wear a suit, full suit. Sometimes I opt to wear a full suit depending on where I'm at.

[Kevin James Reiner]

What depends what we're big on. What depends?

[Ryan Hamilton]

I mean. Well, if I'm doing the Tonight show, something like that, I'll wear a full suit. Very special occasion. You know, if I'm in a big theater or something like that, I might wear a full suit. But if I'm in like an arena or something, I often feel like I gotta wear like more casual situation.

[Kevin James Reiner]

Oh, you play it down.

Yeah, a little cash. A rake and leaves jacket, as Jerry calls it.

What's your rake and leaves jacket?

[Ryan Hamilton]

You know, like a jacket. Like you, like a, like a suede kind of jacket.

Maybe these guys operate, they're operating in a different fashion sense.

[Ryan Hamilton]

I don't know. I'm always thinking about what's appropriate. But I do think you've changed the way you perform a little bit based on how you dress. And I think it's important, and I think it's very important that people look at you and go, oh, that guy looks sharp. But they're not distracted by it. Once you get distracted by it, I think that's a little, you know, a little bit to your detriment as a stand up comedian. Yeah, unless everybody's different. But that's how I feel.

Nobody's ever said that about us. Those guys are sharp. Can I ask you this? What are the suits? What's the brand of suits?

[Ryan Hamilton]

Oh, lately I've been to Zenya. Zenya's a good fit for me.

[Kevin James Reiner]

If you watch my last special, I got A lot of compliments, people go, that jacket looks nice. And it's because I spent the time to find the right drape and the right color and the right fabric and the right.

And so that's what I went for. And. And it pays off, I think, if that's, you know, and it makes you feel a certain way. I think one of the most stressful parts about doing television anything is figuring out how you look. Yeah, it makes me. It's like once I get that down, I'm relaxed, I'm calm. It's an investment in your performance.

[Stage Foley]

I feel like you do the show. You do the show, you keep the suit on for the rest of the night or you change out of.

[Ryan Hamilton]

Depends, I guess I like to get out of it as soon as I can, depending on the situation.

[Stage Foley]

You sit in the pants or do you put. You fold the pants?

[Ryan Hamilton]

I'll sit in the pants. You know, for a while. Yeah, I'll sit in the pants.

[Kevin James Reiner]

Listen, we were talking to two guys who are banned with suits, right? We've always been bigger guys.

[Stage Foley]

Banned with most things.

[Kevin James Reiner]

And we. Look, you put a suit on us, it lasts about like a fat kid at a wedding. We got. I got about 40 minutes in a suit before I look like a melted candle. The bag.

[Ryan Hamilton]

What do you mean? The suit, the shirt, something happens.

[Kevin James Reiner]

Oh, yeah. Like, I'm just not.

Maybe you need.

I think the problem with a lot of people with suits, and I have this problem too, it's very difficult to just go buy a suit. You gotta find the. You gotta get the right fit, and then a lot of those problems will go away.

Now, who's your tailor? You got a specific guy you go to? You don't have to say his name.

[Ryan Hamilton]

Well, no, I. I have tried different people over time. I found someone in Chicago I really like at the Zenya store. She's great. And she helped me with the special. And so I stay in touch with her. What touch?

With a tailor?

[Kevin James Reiner]

That's crazy shit. That's good stuff.

[Ryan Hamilton]

When you write someone who really understands you and knows what you want, you know, and then they have all my measurements and everything. I mean, I've only ordered the one thing from her, but, you know, she was good.

[Kevin James Reiner]

He's got. He's got a tailor on retainer, this guy. I don't know.

[Stage Foley]

What was the suit? 10 grand. 10 grand?

[Ryan Hamilton]

That. Which one? The special jacket.

I don't think it was that much. I Can't remember. No, I think it was. I don't remember now, but you know, it was a lot of money, but it wasn't that much.

You're an Idaho boy.

[Ryan Hamilton]

I'm from a little town in Idaho, a little potato farming community. A thousand people in this town.

[Kevin James Reiner]

Who still. Has it gotten any bigger?

[Ryan Hamilton]

I just did an interview yesterday. Somebody on the radio did a bunch of research on my town, and they. And they go, do you guess what the population is now? And I guess 1200. And he said it's 950. So it's gone down, but I think it's. I don't know. That seems odd to me because I think there are new people coming, but.

[Stage Foley]

What'd your mom and dad do?

[Ryan Hamilton]

My dad, they both studied creative things. They studied. My dad studied art education. My mom studied like creative writing, but they ended up doing different things. My dad eventually, when he was young, was a. Got a career as a lineman for a little power company.

[Stage Foley]

Right. For the county.

[Ryan Hamilton]

Yeah. Yeah, let's go. Basically love it. And a little power co op in Idaho. And my mom became a teacher.

[Stage Foley]

Okay.

[Ryan Hamilton]

Yeah. And she taught all sorts of different. She taught sixth grade for a long time. She taught creative writing. She taught creative gifted and talented for the whole school district from a very rural place. You know, a little tiny town and so.

[Stage Foley]

Brothers and sisters?

[Ryan Hamilton]

Yeah, I have one brother, one sister. I'm the oldest.

[Stage Foley]

Very nice. Yeah, that makes sense.

[Ryan Hamilton]

Yeah.

[Stage Foley]

Yeah, you got a George Bailey vibe to you.

[Ryan Hamilton]

Oh, w. W. What do you mean?

[Kevin James Reiner]

He just pulled that? He's got talent.

[Ryan Hamilton]

I love it.

A jacket. Okay. What did you. Was it the house you grew up in? Was it on a big plot? Like how rural was the neighborhood? Or was the houses close together? Or were you.

[Ryan Hamilton]

Like, when I was up until I was about 13, I lived. We lived in a little house in town, but it was on the edge of town and so right on the edge of town, it felt like almost out of town, but there was a big pasture next to us with cattle and horses.

[Kevin James Reiner]

Really?

[Ryan Hamilton]

We didn't own it, but, you know, that's where it was at the end of the street. And we had neighbors and stuff. And then we moved out of town eventually when I was about 14 to, like, rural.

[Kevin James Reiner]

More rural.

[Ryan Hamilton]

Yeah. Well, about three miles out of town. Our nearest neighbor was maybe a mile away.

[Stage Foley]

Damn.

[Ryan Hamilton]

You know, all surrounded by potato. It was a farmhouse that we moved into. It wasn't on a farm, but it was a farmhouse that we moved into. Yeah.

[Stage Foley]

It wasn't your guys farmhouse?

[Ryan Hamilton]

No, no, we never owned a farm. My mother's from this town and her family owned, like, a little general store that my great grandmother ran and my grandfather ran after that. It was called a variety store.

[Stage Foley]

Nice.

[Ryan Hamilton]

And they sold everything, appliances, clothes.

[Kevin James Reiner]

And it was open while you were a lot when you were a kid?

[Ryan Hamilton]

Up until I was about 12 or something.

[Stage Foley]

Did you get to run around the store and stuff like that?

[Ryan Hamilton]

Oh, yeah, yeah. I used to go. I used to work there. They'd put me to work every Christmas. They had toyland downstairs, and that was insane for us.

[Kevin James Reiner]

They'd set it up just for Christmas.

[Ryan Hamilton]

Yeah, yeah. They had toy land down in the basement. And, you know, we would always get the wholesale discount. So I would work all summer because I could buy, you know, great stuff from my grandfather's store.

[Kevin James Reiner]

Would you do. Would you work at the store?

[Ryan Hamilton]

I would work there sometimes, yeah. You know, just like taking stuff out, shelving, stuff like that. I never, like, was like, customer service.

[Kevin James Reiner]

What was the first proper job you had?

[Ryan Hamilton]

I always had jobs. I got a job at a little pizza place right across the street from my grandfather's store when I was about, I guess, 13, something like that.

[Stage Foley]

How was that pizza?

[Ryan Hamilton]

It was called Husky Pizza, which was the name of our high school mascot. I don't remember the pizza being great,

[Kevin James Reiner]

but I would have to assume it's all potatoes.

[Ryan Hamilton]

But I didn't know great pizza then either.

[Kevin James Reiner]

Sure.

[Ryan Hamilton]

And I also. Every potato harvest had jobs because we would get out of school for a couple of weeks to harvest.

[Kevin James Reiner]

School.

[Ryan Hamilton]

Yeah. For we called spud harvest. And first two weeks of October, we get out of school.

[Stage Foley]

No kidding.

[Ryan Hamilton]

To go help harvest the potatoes. Yeah, because everybody's. You know, most of the kids were farm kids, so they needed to go work. And so if you weren't a farm kid, you'd go get a job because what else are you gonna do? So, you know, 13, 14, you start going to get jobs and. Yeah, we work for a couple of weeks. I would. You start on the sorting table, pulling potatoes and vines.

[Kevin James Reiner]

He goes right back into. That was muscle memory. He was picking them, throwing them.

[Stage Foley]

You're not in the field. You're like, by.

[Ryan Hamilton]

I wanted to get promoted to work in the field, but you really gotta be blood to drive the truck and stuff like that, you know, Like, I'm not. I'm the, you know, friends of the farmers kids. I'm not the. I'm not one of the actual farmers, but. So I would start. You start on the sorting table. Eventually, I got to where I ran the stinger, it's called, which was. Yeah, it was awesome. You regulate the flow of the potatoes off of the truck up onto the sorting table, and then it goes into a piler. And I never got to run the piler, but that's. That's what stacks the potatoes in the cellar. But I really wanted to do was drive truck, you know, where the combine comes in and puts the potatoes in the truck. But I never got to do that.

[Kevin James Reiner]

Yeah. What did that pay, like, by the hour?

[Ryan Hamilton]

I don't remember. I mean, this was a long time ago, but Four potatoes? Yeah, we got paid by the potato. No. Yeah. You would end up making, you know, six, eight hundred bucks for two weeks at that time.

[Stage Foley]

That's not bad.

[Ryan Hamilton]

It was really good money for a kid. I actually bought my first car with my spud Money is what we call spud money. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

What year is this?

[Kevin James Reiner]

It sounds like 1932.

[Ryan Hamilton]

No, I know, it does. This was in the 90s, so. Yeah. I mean. Yeah, probably around early 90s, mid 90s, when I was doing that. Yeah, yeah.

What were your toys as a kid? What'd you like as a kid?

[Ryan Hamilton]

Oh, man, I was into this series of toys called Mask. Did you ever hear of them?

[Stage Foley]

Yeah.

[Ryan Hamilton]

Did you?

[Stage Foley]

Huge mask guy?

[Ryan Hamilton]

Yeah, I'm 50. Oh, me too.

Yeah.

[Ryan Hamilton]

Yeah. Mobile Armored Strike Command or something like that.

Oh, it is. Yeah. Tonight, Mobile, they fought Venom.

[Ryan Hamilton]

Yeah, exactly.

They had the gas station and all that stuff.

[Ryan Hamilton]

I still have them all. I still have all my masks.

Are you serious?

[Ryan Hamilton]

Yes. They're in a box at home. Yeah, I have a lot of move right there. I got. My grandfather would order these into a store because he knew I liked them. And I would mow lawns all summer so I could buy these.

Wait, are they. Are they unopened?

[Ryan Hamilton]

No, they're all opened. But, yeah, I got them out. My nephews were playing with them. It was pretty fun. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I got all those.

Weren't the toys when we. When we were kids the best.

Oh, those were G.I.

joe, transformers, mask.

[Ryan Hamilton]

These were so cool because they were, like, cool cars. And then they would turn into, like, A jet or, you know, they would turn it. They weren't Transformers. They were more like practical than Transformers turned in.

[Kevin James Reiner]

That's what we like.

Yeah.

Yeah, I mean, I was into comic books for a while. I still have all of those. And I like to go back to now if I'll see a comic book shop, I'll just wander in and. Actually, I just wandered into Midtown Comics the other day and they have a mask. Is like having this, like, resurgence. Yes. I just saw the comic book series. Yeah.

What do you have? Anything? First of all, where is this stuff?

It's in Idaho.

It's in Idaho. Your parents still live there or the.

Yeah.

Do you have anything that you know is expensive in the comic books or,

like, you know, I have the first appearance of Venom. I think that one's worth a few hundred bucks or something like that. Pretty sick. Yeah. Yeah. I don't have anything really crazy, though.

But you know who did the cooking growing up? Your mom?

[Ryan Hamilton]

Yeah, mostly my mom.

[Kevin James Reiner]

Yeah.

What are we talking about?

[Ryan Hamilton]

We would have all sorts of things.

[Kevin James Reiner]

We would.

[Ryan Hamilton]

We were a family that liked to try stuff. It was like. I mean, not my dad, but my mom was very encouraging of, like, we would, you know, if we were out on traveling somewhere, we were encouraged to try new things. But at home, you know. You know, I don't know. We had a lot of Mac and cheese. Things were fast. Everybody was.

[Stage Foley]

Idaho dishes, like fricassee or.

[Ryan Hamilton]

I mean, it's like steak and potatoes. It's pretty standard if you're just gonna have an Idaho dish.

[Kevin James Reiner]

What were the restaurants in town? It's gotta be a small town. So there's the pizza place.

[Ryan Hamilton]

There was the pizza place that would open and close. There was this place called the Frost Top on the highway, which is on the way to Yellowstone Park. And it was only open seasonally a lot of times.

[Stage Foley]

Ok.

[Ryan Hamilton]

But it was cool. It was like an old drive in. And my mom, when she was a teenager, worked there and actually worked There on roller skates. Like she would serve people on roller skates. And it's still there. It has a big. If you look at it.

[Kevin James Reiner]

Yeah, right there.

[Ryan Hamilton]

Whoa. Isn't that cool? That place still exists.

[Stage Foley]

[Kevin James Reiner]

The big root beer outside.

[Ryan Hamilton]

It came right up. That's so funny. Yeah, it's a big. That root beer used to turn when I was a kid. I think it stopped turning. But they don't make stuff like they used to. But. But that place is like an institution and it's right across the highway from the high school. So we would sometimes walk over there, get greasy fries or whatever.

Not a lot of ethnic food in the town.

[Ryan Hamilton]

Not much. My aunt had a Mexican restaurant for a little bit a few years. No kidding? Yeah, she Mexican. She married a Mexican and she learned to make fantastic Mexican food.

No kidding.

[Ryan Hamilton]

Yes. Yeah. And we had a place called Big Judds. It's kind of famous. In our little neck of the woods. They have like a huge £1 burger. That's like £1.

[Kevin James Reiner]

That's how you. That's how you make some buzz.

[Ryan Hamilton]

After it's cooked, not before. And if you eat the whole thing, you get your picture up. You know, I've never attempted it, but.

[Kevin James Reiner]

Really?

What were the vacations like growing up? Where would you go?

[Ryan Hamilton]

We would always try to go somewhere. There were a lot of road trips we went to. One year we. My dad was from Southern California, so we went there a lot to visit his friends and family. One year we went to, oh, this place in. I think it's in Colorado. What's it called? It's like these ancient civilizations who had their homes built into the Machu Picchu. No, it's in. It's in Colorado. It's like Mesa Verde.

[Kevin James Reiner]

That's something, right?

[Ryan Hamilton]

Yeah.

[Kevin James Reiner]

What is Mesa Verde Cliff dwellings? Yeah, yeah.

[Ryan Hamilton]

Mesa Verde National Park. Yeah, it's really cool, actually. There's a lot of.

Who lived there.

[Kevin James Reiner]

There was like eight. Like, you know, they lived in this. This would.

[Stage Foley]

Yeah, I don't like that at all.

That would be. That place is haunted, dude. No way.

It's really interesting.

And your parents were learned people?

[Ryan Hamilton]

My, yeah, my, my. My grandfather took my mom and her siblings on vacations. So that was like a tradition that stayed with us even though we didn't have a lot. But we went to the Oregon coast sometimes. That was good. And you know, we do stuff close. We went to Yellowstone park and like Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Those places are very close. And so we would go explore those places a lot we would go camping sometimes.

[Kevin James Reiner]

Really?

Yeah, yeah. Go camping. Just, you know, close. And those were great trips. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

How were the grades growing up?

[Ryan Hamilton]

Good student? I was average. I would get B's. B's above average. Occasional A and occasional C. Yeah, you know. Yeah. Right around there. Nothing.

What'd you get in the SATs?

[Ryan Hamilton]

You remember we had the acts and I think it was like a 24 or something like that.

[Stage Foley]

Respectable.

[Ryan Hamilton]

Yeah, yeah.

You go to college?

[Ryan Hamilton]

I did. I went to Brigham Young University.

[Stage Foley]

Really?

[Ryan Hamilton]

Yes, and I went there. There was a little. They have a. When I was. Now it's a four year university, but they had a school in Idaho, a branch that was called Ricks College when I went there.

[Kevin James Reiner]

Yes, Rick's. And now it's called Brigham Young University Idaho. And it's a four year school. But it was two years when I went there and then I transferred.

Speaking of that, who is it could have been a local celebrity or who is as a kid the, you know, the most famous person or the first famous person you met. Was there anybody? Could have been like a radio DJ

[Ryan Hamilton]

when I was like 14. I did a lot of stuff when I was 14. It turns out. But I wanted to be a humor columnist. That was, like, my aspiration.

[Stage Foley]

Yeah, I got it.

[Ryan Hamilton]

There was a guy named Dave Barry. You know who Dave Barry is? He's in a lot of movies and gimagoog. Yeah. And he had a humor column that would syndicate it all over the country. He's from Miami, but. And he's a very funny guy. And I would just read that the whole column was just purpose to be funny. And we didn't have a school newspaper, so I called the county newspaper when I was 14 and said, Can I have a column? And they said, sure. So I really. I'm getting to the celebrity. And then the NBC affiliate said, we hear you're interested in journalism. Do you want to, like, learn how to shoot sports? We need a guy to shoot sports. And you can drive when you're 14 in Idaho.

[Kevin James Reiner]

Really?

[Ryan Hamilton]

Yeah, because. Yeah. Now still, because of all of these farm kids, they have to be able to drive this farm equipment. So you get your driver's license when you're 14. Where I grew up.

[Stage Foley]

That's crazy.

[Kevin James Reiner]

That's got to be the only state doing that.

[Ryan Hamilton]

I don't know. I don't know. But I think now it's just daytime. Like, you can't drive at night or something like that. But anyway, so I took this little gig. I learned how to shoot sports, and I met all of the newscasters that I would grow up watching. And the sports guy was like a funny guy. And so I would sometimes write jokes. He taught me how to edit on old reel to reel. And I would do that every Friday night. I would go shoot a game somewhere, drive to the station, and then we would edit and I would. And these guys were celebrities to me. Yeah. You know, I was around TV and it was like, this is cool. I love the vibe of the newsroom. And I just love every once in a while they would mention my name on air and I'd be like, that's awesome.

[Kevin James Reiner]

Yeah, that's amazing.

[Ryan Hamilton]

Yeah, yeah.

[Kevin James Reiner]

What were their names?

[Ryan Hamilton]

There was. Oh, gosh, it's been such a long time. What was. There was Carol Honus and Jay Hildebrandt were the two big anchors and Carol

Yeah, yeah.

This was Channel 8 at that time, which was the NBC. And the. The sports guy was. What was his name? These guys would come and go. Carol and Jay were the only ones who stayed there. These small markets, these kind of just come and go, come and go, come and go.

Those small market News anchors are huge celebrities in the town. They make a lot of cash, too. They do all right, especially back in the 90s. Those guys are probably clearing a lot of money.

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

That's the first thing I said to them.

You guys probably got a lot of cash on you. Got borrow 100 bucks.

How old were you when you got your passport?

[Ryan Hamilton]

I think I must have been, like, 18 or 19, because I was a missionary for two years.

[Stage Foley]

Really?

[Ryan Hamilton]

Really. For the Mormon Church, and I think they must require. I didn't go to a foreign place, but I think they require you to get your passport. Maybe. I'm just trying to think of the first reason why, but that was probably it.

[Kevin James Reiner]

Wow. Did you grow up in the Mormon Church?

[Ryan Hamilton]

I grew up, yeah. Kind of going when I was young, and my mom's family goes way, way back into church, so I kind of. We went when I was really young, and then I kind of started going in, like, high school and stuff like that. And then I went to Brigham Young University, and then I thought, I'm going to go be a missionary. So I did that. I went to college for one year, and then I was missionary for a

couple years, but she didn't graduate college.

[Ryan Hamilton]

And then I came back and gradu.

[Stage Foley]

Gotcha.

[Ryan Hamilton]

Yeah. Yeah. Which was kind of the standard thing. That was the standard.

[Ryan Hamilton]

Yeah. Yeah.

So where'd you go be a missionary?

[Ryan Hamilton]

North Carolina.

[Stage Foley]

Okay.

[Ryan Hamilton]

The western part. I was in Charlotte and up in the mountains and all over the place.

Wow.

[Ryan Hamilton]

Yeah.

[Kevin James Reiner]

I did that for two years. I mean, sometimes I can't believe it, but. Yeah. Yeah.

So you go around trying to convert people.

[Ryan Hamilton]

Yeah, we would go around and, you know, knock on doors and. But that was, like, the last thing we did. People think that we did that all day long, but really, we would try to get referrals. At that time, there was, you know, I don't. Yeah, there was a lot of commercials that they would run. I don't know if you remember that, but they would run and people would call and go, we want. We want to talk to somebody. And so we would follow up on those. Yeah. And. And we would do a lot of, like, community service. It was really pretty. You know, it's. It's. It's an intense experience.

[Stage Foley]

Where would you live?

[Ryan Hamilton]

They had housing that was set up in different places, so it was taken care of. I mean, we. We would pay like a monthly. I don't know, thing, and then everything was Kind of taken care of. They had cars set up for us or, you know, we had our own bike often, but they would have apartments and we would move around to different apartments every few months. It's very, very well organized, to be honest. It's like kind of a program all over the world. And yeah, it was one of the, like, it was pretty difficult and I felt like I needed to do it, but I wasn't real. I don't know, it was hard. But eventually, you know, you don't communicate with your family. You don't date, you don't watch television. You don't like listening to popular music. You have a very regimented sleep and work schedule. You're up every day, you study for like two or three hours.

[Kevin James Reiner]

Get you on a mission, big dog.

[Ryan Hamilton]

No chicks, no tv.

[Stage Foley]

What are you crazy?

[Ryan Hamilton]

Yeah, yeah, it was something else.

[Stage Foley]

You weren't allowed to talk to your parents.

[Ryan Hamilton]

We would. Now I think they talk. Like you can talk once a week on phone or FaceTime. But when I did it, the rules were different. You would write letters is all you. And then you could call on Christmas and Mother's Day.

Jesus.

[Ryan Hamilton]

So for two years, I basically just wrote letters to people.

[Kevin James Reiner]

Was this mid-90s?

[Ryan Hamilton]

This was. Yeah, I guess late 90s. Yeah. Yeah.

I was getting fucked up at Widener,

just dropping out of college.

So, yeah, I mean, I don't. Yeah. Now my life's a little different, but that was what I was doing. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Okay. So when'd you move to New. When'd you move to New York?

[Ryan Hamilton]

I moved. Let's see, like, 2008.

[Kevin James Reiner]

It'll been a while. Yeah.

From Utah. I stuck around in Utah after college.

And did you stand up out there?

[Ryan Hamilton]

I started out there, yeah.

What year did you start?

[Ryan Hamilton]

I did it like three times when I was 18 in Idaho. That I don't really count at that. At Rick's college, I had a little radio show. I was studying broadcast journalism and for the radio show I produced some stand. We. A few of us produced some stand up comedy shows. That was the first time I did it. But then I didn't touch it again for like six years.

And then I started doing it right after college a little bit locally and then. Yeah, that's where I started. And then I eventually moved to New York. I mean, I was doing it full time before I moved to New York.

[Kevin James Reiner]

You were?

[Ryan Hamilton]

Yeah.

[Kevin James Reiner]

What was the first. You know, I mean, if you're Doing it full time, you're obviously earning a living. But was the first like kind of big windfall, like big check with a few thousand dollars or like money. And what'd you do with it? You probably put it right away.

[Stage Foley]

Yeah, money. Yeah, money. Talking cake.

[Ryan Hamilton]

First time I made real money, I don't. I mean, I would get these corporate events every once in a while. It must have been one of those that. Where I went, wow. I don't really remember. I remember the first time as I got paid, but it wasn't real money. It was like those corporates pay all right. I mean, I did the first kind of. Of big things that I really remember being big were like I did live at Gotham for Comedy Central before I lived in New York.

[Stage Foley]

That show was big.

[Ryan Hamilton]

Yeah, yeah. And that was kind of the launching pad for me.

[Stage Foley]

That was the first thing? Yeah. She was like, you're gonna move here and we're gonna get a place. And I remember going like, what neighborhood? Cause I didn't understand how New York worked.

[Kevin James Reiner]

And she's like, I'm not living below 14th Street.

[Ryan Hamilton]

She's like, it doesn't matter.

Gets real bougie real. That's gotta be the emergency.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. So anyway, that was the first kind of big thing that I remember, but cash wise, I don't know. I was always scraping by and those corporates would kind of save my. Save me once in a while, corporate money.

How is Ryan Hamilton with money? I would have to assume pretty good. You're a saver.

[Ryan Hamilton]

I try to be. I mean, I try to be smart. I make mistakes here and there. I Like real estate. And I've made some.

[Stage Foley]

Wait, what this guy screwed in. What do you mean you like real estate?

[Ryan Hamilton]

I'm just interested in it. Even from a young age, just where I grew up, we were always thinking about land and interested in land because of where we lived and just the way the culture was all around agriculture, and it's beautiful. And we had some old family land that had been in my mom's family for a long time. So it just stuck in my head. I was always interested in that. We were always kind of driving around going, who owns that? What is that? That's up for sale. And so I'm always thinking about that. So I've made some purchases, and sometimes I win, sometimes I don't.

[Stage Foley]

So you own some real estate?

[Ryan Hamilton]

I own a little bit. I mean, I own. Yeah.

[Kevin James Reiner]

In New York or outside of New York?

[Ryan Hamilton]

Both, a little bit.

[Stage Foley]

Now, when you say purchases, you mean like buying land or buying home?

[Ryan Hamilton]

Like, I have some land in Idaho that I own jointly with some other families. And. And then. And then, you know, I own an apartment. Apartment in New York.

[Kevin James Reiner]

You own an apartment in New York you live in?

[Ryan Hamilton]

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. But I'm always thinking about that and. And I've always, you know, and I'm trying to move into a different apartment. It's a whole situation.

[Stage Foley]

What were some of the bad, bad moves that you made as far as.

[Ryan Hamilton]

Well, I don't know. I bought this apartment. It's a long story. I'm actually trying to get into another apartment, and I don't know if it was the right situation that I bought. So I'm kind of in the middle of it right now. I'm trying to. And I renovated this other apartment that I'm.

[Kevin James Reiner]

You're making a move?

[Ryan Hamilton]

I'm trying to. I like. I like. I like that way. I like it. It's a good way to invest, I feel like, because I enjoy it, and I also feel like I put a lot into it. You know what I mean? So you feel fulfilled accomplishments? Yes. Yes. And I don't know if New York is a great investment in real estate anymore these days, but that's where some of my money is. And I just wanted to have something in Idaho. Just made me feel connected. Connected. And like I can go back there at some point.

[Stage Foley]

Did you go back there and build a house?

[Ryan Hamilton]

If you want, I could actually. Yeah. My. My mom and sister are now building a house. It's a long story, but I own some land with my mom, and I sold my half to my Sister. And now they're building a house on it. And I own another piece of property jointly with my sister. Yeah. Yeah.

None of these are. None of these are huge investments. You know. But I mean.

Yeah. I love Subarus. I love Subarus. And I was back in Idaho and I needed a car because I was back in Idaho for a lot of the pandemic. And so when I came back to New York I thought I'm just going to keep it because I love going upstate once in a while to look at land, go kick the tires. I'll just keep it. And it kind of satisfies my sweet tooth, and it kind of knocks me out. And there's a lot of great stuff in. I just. I just wash it, chop it up, skin and all. On the road, I'll just.

So I have some buddies who are into watches and it's just a thing where I have a very small wrist, so I could never wear a great watch. So I was always on the hunt, like, what's the watch for me? And this is like one of the cheaper, high end watches that you could buy, really. But it's so perfect and it's just praised as like, it's nothing but a watch. And it does it perfectly well. We found some shoes. I think shoes are important. I, I've. I made a mistake. I think in my last special, I wore brand new sneakers that I'd never worn before. And I walk weird. I didn't feel they, they. I didn't have laces. I couldn't get them tight. They weren't. And I was kind of. My ankle was slipping out and it's. You're thinking, of course, shoes are important. And that leather sole on the stage, on a wooden stage, there's something about that feel, you know what I mean? You nail that leather sole to the stage and you are secure. And I love the sound of it, you know? Yeah, sharp, sharp.

Dude, your place is spotless.

[Ryan Hamilton]

I would assume your apartment, it goes back and forth. My life's been chaos the last month. It's really kind of crazy right now. It's not great, but it's chaos for Ryan Hamilton. I mean, there's buttoned up for you. There's dishes in the sink right now. There's books laying around. The bathroom needs clean. There's piles of laundry that need done. I mean, my life's been chaos for a couple of months. It's a Real mess.

I'll move in. I'll take care of that stuff.

You got an in unit? Washer, dryer

in? No, I have a. A laundry room in the building. Okay.

How do you feel about that? You're okay?

I like it. I like it. It's. It's honestly pretty good because you don't have to service the things. They. They're really nice. And I can do like four loads all at once.

I actually live across the street, coincidentally. I never do that, getting to know him, but I live across the street. Yeah.

Yeah. I don't know. I feel. Yeah, I've always felt like I have my feet in two different worlds. You know what I mean? I come from a very rural kind of, you know, not a lot of money, like. And I live in New York City, and I.

You know, we found the money doesn't really matter. It's like, it's.

[Ryan Hamilton]

No, it doesn't matter whether you're trashy or not.

[Kevin James Reiner]

Yeah, you could have. You could have a lot of money and still be trashy. You can. Yeah, it's like. It takes. You know, it's. It's really where you come from and what's instilled in you and stuff like that.

When's the last time you bought a lottery ticket? A scratch off lottery ticket?

[Ryan Hamilton]

Yeah, I. When the. I started buying lottery tickets. Like, I don't know, when it gets up to really crazy, just for fun, I'll go buy like, the billion dollars. Yeah, I mean, I probably bought 15 lottery tickets my whole life.

Do you gamble?

[Ryan Hamilton]

No, it doesn't do much for me.

Drink?

[Ryan Hamilton]

No, no. I mean, I drank a few times. I. I drank for the first time when I was 45 years old. Whoa. And why.

[Kevin James Reiner]

Why at 45, like, what was it?

[Ryan Hamilton]

I was just on vacation with a friend in Hawaii, and we were like, I don't know. We were just kind of bored. And I get it. It was like, let's try this. And I was at a point in my life where I thought it was after my accident, which we haven't really even talked about yet, but I had an accident, and it was kind of significant to me in my life, and it shifted my mindset. A lot of things where it's like, you only live one time. I'm just gonna try things now.

[Stage Foley]

Did you get banged up? Did you get drunk or just have, like, a couple drinks?

[Ryan Hamilton]

I got really, the drunkest I've ever been.

[Kevin James Reiner]

But you'd only been. That was your first time?

[Ryan Hamilton]

Yeah. I took a long time, though, I think. Yeah. And then I was pretty drunk. And then I would. Did it kind of as an experiment. I'm like, I want to see. Because everybody goes, I want to see you drunk. Like, you know, everybody who knows me well, like, they're just like, for whatever reason, if you never drank your whole life, people want to know what you're like when you're drunk.

[Kevin James Reiner]

That's got to be fun at a party.

[Ryan Hamilton]

And so, yeah. So I was trying to maintain in my head, like, what am I? Like, because this is a question I always get. And I think that I just got overly helpful. Like, I was like, what are your problems? No, we can solve these right now. Like, we can figure out a solution to this stuff.

[Kevin James Reiner]

That's good. Even. Even drunk. Even blackout drunk are classy.

[Stage Foley]

He's sitting at a resort in Hawaii doing people's taxes.

Yeah, that's great.

So. But I did. I. I just don't really enjoy it, and it's not. I just kind of stopped. It was interesting, but we just don't get much out of it.

Where'd you stay in Hawaii? I'm sorry.

[Ryan Hamilton]

I just stayed at. It was a Marriott beach resort. It was like a la. I've been to Hawaii a bunch of times for work and. Yeah, it was on Oahu. Yes.

[Stage Foley]

Ko'. Olina. The Marriott Collina.

[Ryan Hamilton]

I've been there, but that was not. That was for work. This was just a place by the airport. That was. Yeah. Wait, what? I get confused on my Hawaii trips now. No, this was actually on. This was on Kauai. I'm sorry. Yeah.

[Kevin James Reiner]

What was the last vacation you took?

[Ryan Hamilton]

I think it was Kauai. I hardly ever go on vacation. I go home to Idaho a lot. I went Home for the Fourth of July. Yeah, Just to hang out with my family, but to go on vacation. Vacation. I rarely do that.

[Stage Foley]

When you go home, do you stay at the house with your family or do you get a hotel?

[Ryan Hamilton]

I stay at the house. I mean, there's not much hotel happening. And, yeah, last time it was pretty crammed. Right now we're all kind of in a rental house that was never meant for us to live in as a family. So my mom's got a little apartment. My sister's family's in the rest of the house. I actually slept in my nephew's bunk bed.

[Stage Foley]

Nice.

[Kevin James Reiner]

There you go. 50 year old in a bunk bed, baby.

[Ryan Hamilton]

Oh, yeah. Mattress on the floor.

[Kevin James Reiner]

Sometimes I'll sleep in the camp trailer in the driveway. Yeah, in the summer. It's too cold in the winter, but I like it.
