Scotty liked when children came to play in the sandbox. He liked the sound of happy voices in the park. He liked the feeling of his bucket dipping into the soft sand. He liked helping children build hills and trenches and moats and roads. Every day brought something a little different.

Sometimes children used Scotty to dig a deep hole. Sometimes they scooped sand into a bucket. Sometimes they made a mountain and patted it smooth with their hands. Scotty never knew exactly what kind of game the day would bring, and that made waiting feel exciting.
