This is one of my favorite interviews so far. Imagine winning multiple national championships for the most beautiful college campus in America. At a place where tens of thousands of people are tailgating in the middle of campus during an SEC football weekend late into Saturday night. And as dawn breaks on a peaceful Sunday morning, the mountains of trash have magically disappeared. In that moment, you understand WHY the team at the University of Mississippi are national champions. Taking his grounds staff, affectionately known as “weeders”, and developing them into “leaders” has been a joyous challenge that reaped acres of rewards in the form of national recognition by the Princeton Review, PGMS, Newsweek and every faculty, staff, student and visitor who has walked onto the Ole Miss Campus. Building on that momentum, Jeff has designed a professional development plan for his Weeders called Landscape University – a replicable training program that promotes the individual’s innate ability to GROW.***Featured Guest LinksJeff McManus websiteGrowing Weeders into Leaders bookText us feedback on this episode #TeamLOVE Book. The Summer of Love during the late 1960s gave me my first taste of the entrepreneurial world. At age 8, totally bored out of my mind one lazy summer, I started a little "store" in the backyard along our little country lane. One product lead to another, keeping me busy and fascinated about how to serve the other kids on our side street. When desire to serve meets a market need, magic happens. This is an ageless truth, no matter the economic situation.Text us feedback on this episode #TeamLOVE Book. "Honey, we're going to have to sell the house." Those were the first words I used to tell my wife I'd just been fired from my career of 18 years. The only career I'd known since college came crashing down a few days after my 40th birthday. The next few weeks and the first six months set me on an entrepreneurial path that I could have never imagined in my wildest dreams. Becoming the founder of a technology company that revolutionized an industry.Today's episode focuses on the immediate aftermath of losing my career. 20 years ago in March. That time reminds me a great deal of the rollercoaster of emotions many of us are going through now during this season of PAUSE in our lives. It was a time when I drew resourcefulness from my prior experiences, found my passion and benefitted from God's timing. Text us feedback on this episode #TeamLOVE Book. The fall of 2001 felt a lot like it does right now. People and businesses were dazed, confused. Uncertain. Not only had America just witnessed the horrific attacks on our homeland a mere month before, the stock market was entering a season of volatility which would later be called the "dot-com bubble". At this same time there were a group of engineers and designers working behind the scenes on a revolutionary new creation. Until this point, this band of visionaries were known for one, niche product. They were competing against a literal Goliath many times their size, and they were losing market share by the quarter. Finally, they had their new product. But, what to do? I can imagine that the board room was filled with comments like: We can't launch now, people are scared to buy. Will people really spend $399 on something they've never heard of before? We've got a lot of education to do. I'm not sure they will understand. For many of us in business (or want to be), we're probably thinking many of the same thoughts. In this episode, I'm going to share the story of this band of engineers and how in the middle of America's shock and grief, they upended an entire industry. And why today is YOUR day to take even the smallest step towards your dream. Text us feedback on this episode #TeamLOVE Book.
