Cain’s murder of Abel was a horrific act. It was premeditated and was based on envy and jealousy. Cain didn’t just kill a stranger, he killed his own brother. And once it was done, he lied and joked about it. The story of Cain and Abel demonstrates that there is good and bad in the world. We all do bad things at times but we must recognize that if we do something bad, we will be held accountable for it. If we do something wrong, we must recognize what we did and do the right thing to correct it. Biblical stories repeat the theme over and over – sin disrupts the relations between God and human beings.

All people have responsibilities, things that they need to do or take care of. In God’s plan, if you fail to meet your responsibilities, then you have to be held accountable. You are the one to blame and must suffer the consequences of your actions yourself. This is “accountability”. Adam’s responsibility was to care for the garden and obey God. Instead, Adam chose to disobey God and as such, was held accountable for his actions.

The creation story sets the stage for the entire Bible excursion. Every story has a beginning and Genesis sets the stage for our journey by pointing out that God created everything in our world and that he did so in an ordered and purposeful manner.

Genesis is the first book in the Pentateuch (and although the author of Genesis is unknown, it is believed the same person wrote all five books of the Pentateuch. Jewish and Christian traditions attribute the Pentateuch to Moses who plays a key part in the narrative. The source of the narrative is unknown too. It could have been compiled by the author from various sources or passed down verbally through many generations.

Many Bible readers feel they struggle interpreting the true meaning of the biblical texts.
