One of the most frightening possibilities in Scripture is that we can be deeply religious, know the Bible, care about holiness, and still find ourselves opposing what God is doing.

Acts 22 gives us Paul’s own testimony. Before his conversion, Paul was not trying to rebel against God. He was zealous for God. He sincerely believed he was defending the truth—until Jesus confronted him and revealed that his religious zeal was actually being used against God’s people.

In this teaching on Acts 22 explained, we look at Paul’s testimony and the danger of confusing religious conviction with genuine submission to God.

Paul had been trained in the law, educated under a respected teacher, and passionate about defending what he believed. Yet Jesus had to confront him with the reality that he was persecuting the very people who belonged to God.

What makes Acts 22 even more striking is what happens when Paul tells his story to the crowd. They listen until his testimony challenges something they deeply believe. Then the same religious zeal that once drove Paul to persecute Christians begins appearing in the people listening to him.

This chapter challenges us to examine ourselves.

Are we willing to let God correct us?

Are we humble enough to consider that something we strongly believe could be wrong?

Does our religious activity produce the character of God—especially love toward the people around us?

Paul’s testimony also gives tremendous hope. Jesus did not simply destroy the man who was persecuting His people. He confronted him, corrected him, and completely redirected his life. The persecutor became a witness.
