One of the biggest mistakes associates make when evaluating their careers in BigLaw is relying on signals that often have little relationship to long-term success. I explain how operational realities, partner preferences, practice group differences, and firm economics influence these experiences far more than most associates realize. Rather than focusing on surface-level indicators, I encourage lawyers to evaluate the factors that truly predict long-term success, including increasing responsibility, stronger judgment, growing trust from partners, and meaningful opportunities to exercise independent thinking.
