Now we get to have fun. Rebecca, because we get to draft. We just came off recording the books of January. Some of those books. Yeah. It's going to be weird because this is going to come out before it's all over the place. Having said that, it's draft time. It's a good season. January. It is a very good season, it seems like. Do we need to take anything off the board?
B
I don't think so.
A
I don't think so either.
B
Yeah, there's nothing. Yeah. There are a couple that we're going to be competing over, I think, but there's nothing like the new Colson Whitehead that we're just going to take off the board.
A
We'll get to do that this summer for vote getting. Does Colson White. I mean, there's what we want to read, but, like, does it. Does it matter that much for the vote getting? I'm not even sure what book by what author would need to come out that we'd have to fight over.
B
And it's been a while since we just took somebody off the board. It might. It was in that season where we had Whitehead and Zadie and Franzen and Erdrick all together, but that might have been the year that was the first of the new Colson Whitehead. Like this summer, which now we're just seasons ahead of ourselves. But this summer, it's the third in the trilogy. And so there's also. I don't think we have to take that one off the board. We're coming into a really good season. I think the results of our fall draft tell us something about the season we're coming out of because it's never close. Like, usually one of us trounces the other one.
A
Yeah. And it's one or two books. Right. Usually it's one that moves the needle.
B
Yeah. And in our fall draft, I got 51 points of the vote and you got 48.6% of the vote. That is the closest I've ever seen it in a draft by a lot. And I think that's a reflection of the fact that there weren't like a bunch of big titles or even just a couple titles that would have really moved the needle. I won on having Angela Flournoy and Patricia Lockwood and Zadie Smith altogether. I also had Oink and Braithwaite. That's pretty good. But you had Ali Hazelwood and Susan Orlean and the Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny. So like it was. There was a lot. Just a lot of good stuff, but nobody that really pushed one of us or the other into the winning position. So that means that you get to take the first pick today.
A
All right. I think this one's actually I get a lot when I pick Kin by Terry Jones with my first pick. It's been a while since we've got a new Terry Jones, so I think it becomes an event. 368 pages, February 24th from Knopf. I think Silver Sparrow and Into American Marriage was a real one two punch. And this is also about lifelong friends over time, which is really the mo. The mood of like the last year and a half in upmarket commercial fiction. Rebecca. Which I. Have we seen a big think piece somewhere about the. The. The great lady writers of our time writing about friendship.
B
Now, I have not seen that piece, but I'm here for it goes.
A
The main character goes off to Spelman College and it's a. It's a campus novel at Spelman by Terry Jones. I'm super excited. So I'm so glad I get to pick it. Number one. Where are you on this book? Are you.
B
I'm really excited. I love Tyree Jones. Yeah. This was near the top of my draft. I don't know if I was going to take it in the first round or not, but I thought we would both be competing over it. A really strong pick and she's been. I follow her on social and she's been signing her arm off. Just like thousands of people.
A
She's out there doing it. That's hilarious.
B
Yeah. She's just signing tons of copies to get ready for the release of it. I would not be surprised. And we'll talk about it because I'm sure it'll show up in the it books conversation when it comes out in February. I wouldn't be surprised to see this get a big book club pick. She's been honored by Oprah in the past. Just a huge writer and it has been a little while from her. So I think folks will be happy to hear from Tayari Jones. I'm gonna. I think on a meta note, we got a bunch of our favorite marquee authors this season and all of them are writing short stories.
A
Short stories. Yes. Fascinating.
B
Which is really interesting because they're big names that we want to compete over, but also we know that short stories are a tougher sell.
A
So we're going by name. Really name alone if you're picking those.

Hosts: Jeff O’Neal and Rebecca Schinsky
Date: January 9, 2026
In this teaser for Book Riot’s premium content, Jeff and Rebecca kick off their highly anticipated “Winter 2026 New Release Draft.” This annual tradition pit the co-hosts against each other in a friendly competition to assemble the most exciting lineup of forthcoming book releases. The episode revolves around their draft strategy, reflections on previous seasons, and a preview of standout picks, highlighting trends and marquee authors in the publishing world for early 2026.
Jeff and Rebecca launch the draft after quickly agreeing nothing needs to be taken "off the board" this year—no looming mega-title (like a new Colson Whitehead) that would clearly dominate.
They reflect on previous seasons where entire authors had to be exempted due to hype (e.g., Colson Whitehead, Zadie Smith).
“I don’t think we have to take that one off the board. We’re coming into a really good season.” – Rebecca [01:17]
The co-hosts look back on their most recent fall draft—a highly competitive season, notable for how close the voting was:
"In our fall draft, I got 51% of the vote and you got 48.6%. That is the closest I’ve ever seen it in a draft by a lot." – Rebecca [01:50]
Rebecca credits her narrow victory to assembling a solid roster (Angela Flournoy, Patricia Lockwood, Zadie Smith, Oyinkan Braithwaite) but notes Jeff’s equally impressive picks.
“You had Ali Hazelwood and Susan Orlean and The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny." – Rebecca [02:14]
Jeff uses his first pick on Kin by Tayari Jones, highlighting its significance as the author’s first new novel in several years.
“I pick Kin by Tayari Jones with my first pick. It's been a while since we've got a new Tayari Jones, so I think it becomes an event.” – Jeff [02:43]
“This is also about lifelong friends over time, which is really the mood of the last year and a half in upmarket commercial fiction, Rebecca.” – Jeff [03:07]
Rebecca enthuses about the pick, sharing her own excitement and noting author buzz:
“She’s been signing her arm off—just, like, thousands of people.” – Rebecca [03:47] “I wouldn’t be surprised to see this get a big book club pick. She’s been honored by Oprah in the past. Just a huge writer and it has been a little while from her, so I think folks will be happy to hear from Tayari Jones.” – Rebecca [04:12]
Rebecca observes that many beloved, high-profile authors are returning this season—but with short story collections instead of novels. This shapes both draft tactics and reader anticipation.
“On a meta note, we got a bunch of our favorite marquee authors this season, and all of them are writing short stories.” – Rebecca [04:23]
Both agree this trend is fascinating, but acknowledge short stories are a “tougher sell,” so picks are driven by the author’s prestige.
“So we’re going by name. Really name alone if you’re picking those.” – Jeff [04:45]
“There are a couple that we’re going to be competing over, I think, but there’s nothing like the new Colson Whitehead that we’re just going to take off the board.”
– Rebecca [00:47]
“That was the season where we had Whitehead and Zadie and Franzen and Erdrich all together… That might have been the year that was the first of the new Colson Whitehead.”
– Rebecca [01:13]
“I follow [Tayari Jones] on social and she’s been signing her arm off—just like thousands of people.”
– Rebecca [03:47]
The conversation is warm, playful, and full of expertise, with both hosts showing genuine excitement for the 2026 literary season and each other’s choices.
