Tim Costello sells everything to do with a baby’s sleep, whether it’s booties, blankets or the cot itself. He started off with a sewing machine in his own home and now has a turnover of €15m. Baby elegance is now a well-known brand for young families and for every cot sold, a tree is planted somewhere in Ireland. Tim Costello is this month’s Green Businessperson of the Month courtesy of Repak.

There has been an explosion of ways to buy and sell shares, ETFs, commodities and crypto over the past few years. The UK company Trading 212 is making Dublin its European trading hub. They hope to avail of the opportunities from the proposed Personal Investment accounts to be announced in the budget. Joining Joe this morning was Michael Byrne the Chief Executive of Trading 212 Ireland.

The international insurance broker Howden Re is expanding its presence in Ireland focusing on Re-insurance. Ireland has become the 4th largest market in the EU. But amid the hottest temperatures that Europe has ever experienced on top of the wettest in January, is there a risk that the payouts will be huge in the future? Joe was joined on the show by Grange Turner, Managing Director with Howden Re.

The sheer scale of fraudulent calls, texts, emails and websites is almost overwhelming. Three Ireland says that it intercepted half a million fake text messages and blocked 26 million scam calls last year. What can companies do to protect themselves and their staff from the avalanche of fraud? Joe discusses this further with Tom Kinsella, Chief Consumer Officer at Three Ireland.

Although credit unions have been able to provide mortgages for a few years. They only account for a fraction of the home loan market. Do the credit unions even have the money to lend if demand were to take off. What role will they play when the new tax efficient personal investment accounts are introduced next year? Speaking to Joe this morning was Helen Carbery the Chief Executive of the Credit Union Development Association.

Every time a solicitor represents an accused person in the District Court they are paid €239 for the first day in court and €59 for every subsequent day in court. They don't get paid for any preparatory work or administration costs. The government wishes to settle on a new bulk payment of around €455 irrespective of how long or how short the case lasts. Joe discuss this more with Gary Mulchrone who works for Walsh Solicitors and sits on the Criminal Law Committee of the Law Society.

A report from Fordel Wealth Management suggests that households are forgoing €3.5bn worth of earnings every year by keeping vast amounts of the disposable cash in low yield accounts. The report says the nation is becoming more equal with the bottom 50% of households growing their wealth at 14% per annum. Joe discusses the report findings further with Stephen Felle the Chief Executive of Fordel Wealth Management.
