Jenny Blafer
We're your hosts, Jill Dunn and Carlene Higgins.
Guest Expert
Hello and welcome back to Breaking Beauty Podcast. On this bright and sunny day. At least I hope it's bright and sunny on your end. I'm Carlene and this is my co host Jill. And and we're so glad you're here.
Jenny Blafer
Of course. We are two longtime beauty editors turned beauty podcasters and we're in your feed every single Wednesday delivering the breakthrough people, products and moments in beauty. Carlene, recently we had a hashtag damn good episode. Those are the ones that we do once a month where we're reviewing products and we did something a little different where we were talking about the beauty innovations that stood the test of time and then we talked about some flavors flops too. But I definitely think sunless tanners are an innovation that a lot of people cannot be without.
Guest Expert
I mean, if you're very fair like me on the Fitzpatrick scale, you will definitely have had a brush in with self tanner at some point in your life. I don't know, I'm lazy slash busy, so I can't say I'm on top.
Jill Dunn
Of it all the time.
Guest Expert
But especially for events like on my wedding day, I definitely would have a self tan going. I think just to like even out, you know, dimples or chicken skin or like before, you know, that first time on the beach, I'm always hitting the self tanner, but I think it's great that it's evolved so that people of all skin tones use it to even out that skin tone and get this sun kissed glow that really you can only get from a self tanner.
Jenny Blafer
And I love following creator Jackie Aina and I know in the past she's partnered with Saint Tropez and she's talked about how she loves how it kind of gives you that golden glow on melanated skin. And I mean, I just looked at that Runway at the Sports Illustrated swim week in Miami and I mean the self tanner was just like it could have walked the Runway on its own. I'm willing to bet pretty much every single person who walked in that Runway show probably had some kind of sunless tanner going on. And I think even just the application methods have come such a long way, you know what I mean? Like it's in the last 20 years in particular that make it more forgiving. Whether it's like moisturizer with self tail tan glow in it or you know, spray versions, the foams the waters, all of the things.
Guest Expert
And I mean, if you think about these women on the red carpet, like, they. You'd be hard pressed to find an example of somebody who is not using self tanner these days or they're somebody in their glam squad because it's almost like invisible hosiery. You know what I mean? It's like you don't really see people wearing hosiery. Like, you're not going to see that at the Oscars or whatever.
Jenny Blafer
Right.
Guest Expert
But they're damn well using a lot of like bronzer or something.
Jenny Blafer
Forget about the women. It's the men. Because they don't want to wear makeup. No, I'm actually curious.
Guest Expert
I'm not even joking.
Jenny Blafer
I don't. I think it is a lot of male clients, especially in the celebrity world, because they are probably not as diligent about staying out of the sun. So they will have maybe awkward tan lines or what have you. And it's just come such a long way. My favorite videos on Tik Tok are the ones where the husbands are doing the spray tans on their wives or the regular tents. It's like hilarious joke. It's like we have spray tan at home and it's cut to the husband, like pouring the jug of solution into the spray gun and gets the wife to stand in the shower and like they have the whole setup. It's amazing.
Guest Expert
Okay, I haven't seen that. But yes, I think it's definitely. Especially if you live in certain areas.
Jill Dunn
Certain pockets of the world.
Guest Expert
It's just like everybody's so into it.
Jill Dunn
So we've dedicated today's episode exclusively to the topic of self tanning. And we had to recruit the best expert we could possibly think of to.
Guest Expert
Join us on the mic to share the tanning secrets that she uses to prep everyone in Hollywood. Her name is Jenny Blafer.
Jill Dunn
She's better known on social media as.
Guest Expert
Sun Kissed by Jenny.
Jenny Blafer
And Jenny is trusted by some of the biggest names in Hollywood. I'm sure she can't even tell us all of them because, you know, sometimes you're just like signing NDAs because you're seeing celebrities naked all day. But oh, yeah, we do know that her Instagram, she has tagged posts with Khloe Kardashian. So she's definitely in demand and she's great at education.
Jill Dunn
She actually trains other airbrush artists to.
Guest Expert
Become certified in the SKJ method. It's called For Sun Kiss by Jenny. She has her own professional line of airbrush products, so you wouldn't be able to buy them as a listener unless you're a professional airbrush artist. But she does drop many product recommendations.
Jill Dunn
For products that you can use at home.
Guest Expert
Plus we find out her techniques for.
Jill Dunn
Skin prep, how to get an even application, how to avoid streaking, and why you might want to consider a clear tan water formula for your face.
Jenny Blafer
Plus, if you have a big event coming up, Jenny lets us know how many days beforehand you should get your sunless tanner going. What do you do if you are rushing, you make a mistake or you put too much on like those little oops moments a pro how how they about fixing it.

This episode is brought to you in part by Vegamore. Okay, so when it comes to tackling hair thinning, it's really an inside out approach. Just like with skin care, what you put in your body and what you put on it, those things combined are what's going to give you the best results. So when it comes to hair thinning, I'm a big fan of Vegamore's Grow Hair serum. Vegamore is the leader in plant powered science backed solutions for thinning hair. Their grow hair serum was recently named the number one prestige hair serum and it's clinically proven to reduce shedding leaving you with visibly fuller, healthier hair. So what makes Vamore different? Because we know there are a lot of these formulas out there. Well, Vegamore is vegan, cruelty free and it's formul without any harsh chemicals. The Grow Hair Serum is also packed with peptides, plant stem cells and plant based phytoactives to deliver real results in as little as three months. And the best part is it's clinically tested with 93% of users experiencing less shedding and 90% seeing an improvement in the overall appearance of their hair. What I really love about Vegamore is how easy it is to add the Grow Hair Serum to my routine. I just apply a few drops once a day. I rub it scalp so it really gets in there. It's very lightweight and I can use it on wet or dry hair. I like to use it on wet hair personally and it's kind of a game changer. In just a few weeks I started noticing less shedding and my hair felt just healthier in general. So since the best results come with consistency, though, I do recommend subscribing. There's a jumbo size so that you'll never miss a day. If you're struggling with shedding or thinning, don't wait. Vegamore really does work. So if you're tired of dealing with shedding and thinning, take back control of with Vegamore for a limited time. Our podcast let's Not Talk about the Husband every Friday. Follow the show wherever you get your podcasts so you don't miss a thing. Welcome to Breaking Beauty Podcast. Sunkissed by Jenny Last night you got to meet Carlene. So you and Carlene are already like quite acquainted. Like you've seen Carleen basically naked at this point and I would say that's a first for our guests.
Guest Expert
I will say that. That is true. You guys are. Well, the funniest moment. It wasn't like, when you're getting the actual tan. That's like, normal. You need to reveal those body parts. But the funny part, when I really realized how naked I was when I was seeing her out, because you're not supposed to put on any clothes right away while it's drying. So I was really naked and we're just chatting and I'm like. And my breasts are right here. And.
Jenny Blafer
Thank you.
Guest Expert
Jenny, do you work a lot? Are you having a busy day?
Carlene Higgins
Normal work environment for me. I don't know about you.
Jenny Blafer
I feel like, well, you were in your hotel room, so you were in a safe space.
Jill Dunn
Space.
Jenny Blafer
But I do just love that about if people who work in aesthetics, a lot of them, there's just zero given about.
Guest Expert
You've seen it all, no big deal.
Jenny Blafer
Right. You've done it all in God knows how many different types of environments. You're such a pro. It's like, probably nothing phases you.
Carlene Higgins
Completely desensitized.
Guest Expert
Yeah.
Carlene Higgins
It's like, okay. And then now it's like, you know, turns on to me where I'm at the doctors. I'm like, okay, let's go. It's just very natural.
Jenny Blafer
Yeah.
Guest Expert
And I mean, this is the other thing is that there's. We were talking about this last night. So you have to sign NDAs with the celebrities that you work with. And that's par for the course when it comes to manicurists and hair people and estheticians and all that. But you really see them in a way that other Glam Squad members do not.
Carlene Higgins
Correct.
Guest Expert
Right.
Carlene Higgins
Yes. So it's a very vulnerable service. I mean, not only are you completely nude, if they choose, they can wear underwear, bra or bathing suit what they want, but for the most part, completely nude. But you're also standing up and doing positions, and it's not squad. Yeah, yeah. So, you know, I try and, like, I'm very firm on the NDA as far as. Because I want them to know, like, they're in safe, comfortable hands and, like, no judgment.
Guest Expert
And we all know that there's some smoke and mirrors involved.
Jill Dunn
Right?
Guest Expert
Like, at one point, Jenny, you were tanning, like, my butt. And I have this. I will admit this because this is all in the name of, like, beauty, guinea pigging. But, like, I have this little cyst on my butt, like, at the bottom. I actually wanna get it removed. I need to talk to a derm. But I've been told, like, it's totally benign. There's nothing. So it's just aesthetic, but, like, I hate it. You can see it when I'm wearing a bathing suit. So I was, like, very aware. And while you were, like, spraying me and I was like, I can only imagine. Like, there's probably some celebs who have.
Jenny Blafer
Like, secret bumps and bumps.
Guest Expert
Secret bumps and bumps. Like we all do. And, like, you're seeing. You're privy to all that.
Carlene Higgins
Don't even remember. Didn't even notice.
Guest Expert
Right answer.
Carlene Higgins
I absolutely. I promise you. Promise you. I forget the second I walk out of that door. You see so many bodies. Love that. You just don't even. You don't care anymore. Like, you are solely there for a job. You get it done, and then you're moving on. Yeah.
Jenny Blafer
Yeah.
Guest Expert
Love it.
Jenny Blafer
We're gonna get all of your tips and tricks today for everybody who's listening. Cause you're the pro, as we know.
Guest Expert
The first question I asked you as soon as you walked in was, do you think that tanning is more quote, unquote, in right now, like, more popular or more people coming to you these days? Because I feel like it's gotten due to, like, a lot of content creators on social media. I feel like it's more hot than ever.
Carlene Higgins
Yeah.
Jenny Blafer
Sunless tanning. Yeah.
Carlene Higgins
Yeah, it definitely has. So I've been doing this 16 years, and to watch it unfold is, like, it's wild because, you know, it was very taboo in the beginning, and it's just snowballed throughout the years. I definitely feel like now more than ever because it's so, like, healthy skin is in everybody. The amount of tiktoks that people are doing all these facial products and is just, like, astronomical. So everyone's very concerned about skin health, wrinkles. So that kind of, like, that coincides with sunless tanning, where making sure we're keeping our skin glowy and healthy with a little bit of color that's not from, you know, uv.
Jenny Blafer
Right. An enhancement.
Guest Expert
Right. But you were saying that there's more of, like, au naturel, like, undetectable kind of vibe happening more than the.
Carlene Higgins
Yeah, I do feel like we have more of that natural tan. It's not so, like, hard on the paint, like I was saying where they were, like, the darker, the better. More isn't always more when it comes to sunless tanning. So I think we may have had that about five years ago, and now we're. Or maybe three. And now we're inching to the, like, glowy, healthy aesthetic.
Jenny Blafer
It's like a no Makeup. Makeup version of sunless tanning.
Jill Dunn
Yeah.
Jenny Blafer
That you see, it's like, it's persistent. It's ever present on like a red carpet, but you don't go, she really got a self tape. It's just, you know, they all have. Yeah, but it's like they look like they're just back from vacation.
Carlene Higgins
My guy, celebrities love it because they don't have to put all that makeup on. They get a little bit of color and then a majority for red carpet, it's for smoothness, evenness, just to take the edge off. It's not for, like major color. A little warmth to. For the hair, the dress.
Guest Expert
Yeah.
Jenny Blafer
Make it all cohesive.
Carlene Higgins
Yeah, exactly, exactly.
Guest Expert
So let's talk about how to get your best ever self tan, whether you're doing it at home or going to see a professional. What kind of homework do you give your celeb clients beforehand?
Carlene Higgins
I like to compare a spray tan to getting your nails done. Like, you want to make sure you do the prep. You get the cuticles, you buff the nail, you're prepping it, you prime it, and then you paint it. So at home they need to do the prep. I can't do that. That's exfoliating. Make sure your canvas is clean. Exfoliating with like a mitt, something very abrasive but not heavy with oils, like those products that contain a lot of oils that can fill your pores and block the tan. So exfoliation, making sure the texture of your skin is even in all areas. Elbows, exactly.
Jenny Blafer
Ankles.
Carlene Higgins
Elbows. Hands, feet. Like wrists, kind of. Those are twice as porous as the rest of the body. So if you're not exfoliating that or hydrating it, it's going to soak up twice as much as the color as the rest of your body. And that's where you get those funky hands. So they have to exfoliate if they're extremely dry. I like for them to moisturize before we spray. And then just having clean skin and preparing for the aftercare. Because that's half the homework as well.
Jenny Blafer
Yeah. So also shaving.
Carlene Higgins
Shaving, exfoliating. I like 12 to 24 hours prior to spraying because it's like your skin is going through this kind of trauma. It's. It's being, you know, tugged and pulled and whatnot. So you want to let it relax and then you can spray. Yeah.
Jenny Blafer
What kind of moisturizer? What's your fave?
Carlene Higgins
So it depends for before and after. So if you're doing something before, non oil based, very water based, I do like those simple cetaphil basics. No fragrances, no frills. Just keep it clean.
Guest Expert
Yeah.
Carlene Higgins
For before, I do like cetaphil, the cream, not the lotion for after. It's glycerin based. Glycerin works really well with the spray tan and keeping it fade nice and. And seamless. But it can be kind of thick for some people. So it's really like no body is the same. There's no one size fits all. So it's very important to know your skin, know what works well for you.
Guest Expert
Yeah.
Jenny Blafer
So it's like everything. Shower good, light lotion, basic. Get it all looking seamless, get your skin looking good 12 to 24 hours before. And then you're ready for you to come in. Yes.
Carlene Higgins
If you have very oily skin, I wouldn't suggest the lotion before because then you're packing the pores.
Jenny Blafer
Right.
Guest Expert
Yeah. Something water based. I think necessaire has a good serum that's very kind of like water based. And wouldn't give you that coating.
Carlene Higgins
Right. Exactly.
Guest Expert
That's gonna block the self tan. It's a 0.5% hyaluronic acid.
Carlene Higgins
Yeah, I do like necessarily.
Guest Expert
I've tried that one. I wanted to ask you about the exfoliators because these days you have chemical exfoliators that can, you know, like the glycolic acid or the salicylic acid base. Do you like or do you have a preference or.
Carlene Higgins
So I don't mind those as long as you're doing them minimum. I would say three days before.
Guest Expert
Right.
Carlene Higgins
You have to let your skin relax. I like them for an even exfoliation as opposed to like the granules in exfoliants that can leave kind of micro hairs.
Guest Expert
Yeah.
Carlene Higgins
So I do like them. But you have to make sure you do them prior to much.
Guest Expert
Few days before.
Carlene Higgins
Few days before. And then also that they're not like a medical grade type of peel.
Guest Expert
Right, Right. That might still be active. Like if you haven't fully gotten it off.
Carlene Higgins
Yeah.
Jenny Blafer
What about. So you say that you're not supposed to shower right before. Because I feel like that would be the inclination before you show up at my house. I'm getting in the shower.
Carlene Higgins
Yeah.
Jenny Blafer
So why do you say not to?
Carlene Higgins
So it's so funny. I just had a client do this last night and I was like, did you just shower sink?
Guest Expert
I did that too. Oh yeah.
Jenny Blafer
You did?
Jill Dunn
Yeah.
Jenny Blafer
Well, yeah, of course. You're like, I know.
Guest Expert
And then I was like, oh, shit.
Carlene Higgins
We're so busy that we're just thinking, like by the hour, minute, whatever. So the reason why, okay, you take a hot shower, your pores are open, they're seeping in all this water, and then you get out and then your pores close. Well, they closed all that water within the pores.
Guest Expert
I see.
Carlene Higgins
So then you're walking to the tent to go spray. And as I see spray. I'm seeing the water kind of. Yes. Out of the pore. And it's, it's separating the tan. It's fixable. Anything's fixable with a spray tan. But I was like, so you. That's why you don't want to do it right before you want your pores to be open and clean up any water.
Jenny Blafer
Right.
Guest Expert
Because also some people might be using, like those heavy cream moisturizing body washes, which are probably not getting fully rinsed off either.
Carlene Higgins
Exactly.
Guest Expert
And how many days in advance do you do your celebrity clients before they have an event or if somebody is doing like a wedding or whatever? Like, what's the ideal?
Carlene Higgins
So it depends if I've seen them before or if I haven't. But it's anywhere from one to two days prior to the event. Some people like their tan the first day. It's the best, the freshest. Some people like their tan the second day for it to settle in. But it's anywhere from one to two days.
Guest Expert
Okay.
Jenny Blafer
Okay.
Jill Dunn
Good to know.
Jenny Blafer
Sa.

Okay, so if somebody's doing this at home, they don't have you on call. What's sort of the go to method for avoiding streaks or just getting that application? Primo.
Guest Expert
Yeah. I was trying to think of the things you were doing when I was standing up in that booth before we started the spray tan. You were kind of like, what were you doing again? My elbows and knees and stuff.
Carlene Higgins
Yes, barrier cream. Definitely barrier cream. So if you're doing it at home or whether with a professional, you want to make sure your porous areas are hydrated. So whether I'm putting it on or you're doing it, put lotion on your hands, your elbows, your feet. There's so many steps as far as making sure it's clean and perfect and seamless, but that is a huge factor to make sure those areas are the same texture as the rest of your body.
Guest Expert
Which one? Like a cerave lotion for that or what's the one you use?
Carlene Higgins
Yeah, we use like more of a thicker, not necessarily like shea butter, but like that kind of thick consistency to have a little extra hydration because you don't want to block it. But you also don't want the sunless tan to fully absorb.
Jill Dunn
Okay.
Guest Expert
What's the one in your kit? You know?
Carlene Higgins
No, I don't even know. I use so many, but I do have a couple bottles of the Necessaire which I love because it's fragrance free. They're lotion. I have used that.
Guest Expert
That's great. As long as we have one that people can get a sense of what you're talking about, going back to the.
Jenny Blafer
Application method and avoid streaks. Like, just talk us through, like what you do.
Carlene Higgins
Yeah, so what I do or what.
Jenny Blafer
You would do at home, what would you do at home?
Carlene Higgins
Okay.
Jenny Blafer
Yeah.
Carlene Higgins
So I would make sure I have an arsenal of sunless tanning, like, products.
Jenny Blafer
Yes.
Carlene Higgins
Whether it be like a kabuki brush, I have, you know, a buffing brush, more of like a wide span brush mitt. I'd have a foam. I'd have like an aerosol spray or a water pump. Because you want to use different things for different parts of the body. How I would do it would be to put on gloves, first of all, and get my whole body with the foam on the mitt.
Guest Expert
Okay.
Carlene Higgins
So I would get my whole body, excluding my hands, feet and elbows. Try and get that as much as possible.
Guest Expert
So when you say Put on gloves. You mean like rubber gloves?
Carlene Higgins
Rubber gloves.
Guest Expert
So you don't get any product, like sitting on your hands for a prolonged period of time. Yeah.
Carlene Higgins
It's crazy, the transfer. Like, I don't even know I wear gloves. I have this. I don't even know where it came from.
Jenny Blafer
It would be like, you know, kind of like dyeing your hair without gloves. Or even when you dye your hair at home, you still get. You're like, oh, my God, it's on my palm or whatever.
Carlene Higgins
So if you want to, like, cross your T's, dot your s. Rubber gloves, apply the foam all over the body. Because I feel like foams tend to hold better. It's more concentrated. So then starting where I like to start above the ankles. So I'm starting the legs and work up. That way, if you don't do all this and you bend down, then you're creasing the stomach. So I like to start down and work up.
Jenny Blafer
Smart.
Carlene Higgins
And then I'll take the foam.
Jenny Blafer
I'll put it and Are we talking about golf ball size per leg? What are we doing?
Carlene Higgins
Good point. A pump. It depends how dark you want to go. It depends the span of the leg. So I would say I like the golf ball reference. Like, put that there, do it, and then make sure, you know. Or one pump. One pump is a good.
Jenny Blafer
Leg per leg.
Carlene Higgins
That way you can disperse the same amount for each leg. And then you're going to pump. Take the kabuki brush, and then you'll do your feet actually. Next. Okay, so. And then you're gonna do half the amount. You don't want to do the same amount because it's gonna soak up. And then you buff in and you.
Jenny Blafer
Get the tops of your feets. Everyone, do not be self tanning the bottom of your.
Carlene Higgins
Correct? Correct.
Guest Expert
Yeah.
Carlene Higgins
Not cute, but yeah. The tops of your feet. And that's why the brush is so good, because you can get around the ankles.
Jenny Blafer
Love this tip.
Carlene Higgins
The back of. What is that? Our Achilles?
Jenny Blafer
Achilles.
Guest Expert
Achilles, yeah.
Carlene Higgins
That can be so dry and so telling of a vast gray tan. So when I'm putting on lotion, I make sure I massage that Achilles to get the hydration in there so it doesn't soak up a lot of solution. So I'll take that brush. I'll buff around in between the toes so you don't have the tops of the toes tan. And then, you know, the sides white, so you get everywhere. It's great. It's gonna be seamless. It's not going to be different than your leg because you're using a different applicator. And then you'll buff your elbows and then you'll do hands. Well, then you'll do face. I like face. You do your hands last. I like to use any type of mist, whether it's an aerosol or a pump mist for the face. I feel like it's just very seamless.
Jenny Blafer
What's your favorite one?
Carlene Higgins
Oof. I had a feeling you guys are gonna ask me. I do like a tan water. So there's Tan Luxe has really good products. Sephora. They're very clean and simple, user friendly. They have like a tan water.
Guest Expert
Yeah.
Jenny Blafer
It seems to be a cult favorite, that line. Tan Luxe.
Carlene Higgins
Yeah, yeah, big time. It's very mainstream. I also like a clear for the face because I have very sensitive skin and I don't want those. Those bronzers to clog my pores.
Jenny Blafer
Yeah, that makes sense.
Guest Expert
Nuda has a tan water spray that's a Canadian company. Do you know that one?
Carlene Higgins
I do know of that. They have a very good professional line as well. That's more prevalent here than their retail, I think.
Jenny Blafer
Yeah, I think so.
Carlene Higgins
But they're well known.
Jenny Blafer
Yes.
Guest Expert
Yeah. And also I think Salty Face has.
Carlene Higgins
Yes. Thank you for bringing these up. There's so many in my head.
Guest Expert
They have a tanning water spray as well.
Carlene Higgins
Yes.
Jenny Blafer
And they sell the kabuki brush with it.
Guest Expert
That's right.
Jenny Blafer
Yeah.
Guest Expert
A lot of my clients like both of those brands. I was gonna try clear formulas versus not clear formulas. What's your recommendation?
Carlene Higgins
I love a cosmetic bronzer. I love to see it go on the skin. We all love instant gratification of having that color. But I also like the clean products. And when you take out all those dyes, you're really omitting some, like, major key products that aren't in there. Those ingredients, the colors, the cls.
Guest Expert
So you think it's better for like your face, for example, where you might.
Carlene Higgins
I do like clear for the face.
Guest Expert
Yeah. Okay, That's a great tip.
Jenny Blafer
Okay, so we've done the face, the body, the feet. What's left?
Carlene Higgins
The hands.
Jenny Blafer
The hands, yes. Let's talk.
Guest Expert
Go ahead.
Carlene Higgins
So same like the feet. You're going to do the. Whether you use a foam or whether you use the pump, you want to use that kabuki brush for the hands. You want to make sure you buff it in. You're doing the claw like motion to get in between those knuckles creases and then blending the wrist so that way the hands are last. You're done. You don't have to touch anything else. You don't have to put anything else on. That's your last step.
Jenny Blafer
And do you, like, rub your palms on, like, a wet wipe or something? Like what if you.
Carlene Higgins
Yeah, I mean. Well, since you're applying it yourself, you don't necessarily, but you can, and. Cause you're doing. If you have a heavy hand and you're like this, then definitely you want to take that baby wipe and get around the cuticles. You want to wipe the palms. And I love a patting motion around the wrist so that you get that nice seamless transition from the wrist to the palm.
Jenny Blafer
Just like blending makeup.
Carlene Higgins
Exactly.
Guest Expert
Yeah. You know, now, pat, don't rub. They always say, do you happen to know those mittens, the applicator mitts, are they washable? Like, how do you. Because they get so gnarly.
Carlene Higgins
Yeah. So you can either wash them or you can just put them in your sink in water with the beauty blender has a really good. Really good liquid wash. Or the sponges. So that's really good. Or you can. Yeah, you can stick it in the washing machine if you're using, like, a mild detergent or something clean.
Jenny Blafer
Yeah, but it sounds like you're not using a mitt. You're using rubber gloves. Right. Or on yourself. You do what?
Carlene Higgins
Well, no, the rubber gloves were just to keep your hands clean and under the mitt. And I also feel like it creates good traction when the mitt's on to get that, because, you know, sometimes it slides around. So that rubber mitt helps lets you manhandle your legs. Yes, exactly.
Jenny Blafer
It's quite a job. Now, how long does that take you to do?
Carlene Higgins
Well, I mean, I don't usually do this.
Guest Expert
Yes, fair enough.
Jenny Blafer
Fair.
Carlene Higgins
But if I were to do this. 15 minutes.
Jenny Blafer
Okay. And how long did it take you to do Carlene's head to toe, start to finish, from inside the door till you're out the door?
Carlene Higgins
30 minutes?
Jenny Blafer
Yeah, I would say 30 minutes.
Guest Expert
She's also doing a spray, which is different.
Jenny Blafer
No, I'm just saying. Yeah, if you're a celebrity, like, you're doing it in, like, 30 minutes or less.
Carlene Higgins
30 minutes? Well, like, if. Depends, but it could be 45 to 30. But this is set up. This is a consultation spray and breakdown.
Guest Expert
Yeah.
Jenny Blafer
Wow, that's. You're not messing about. I love that.
Jill Dunn
This episode is brought to you in part by neutr Fall. So the summer shed is here. Summer shedding is a real thing. That's when your hair starts thinning. You might notice more strands in your hairbrush. And I've actually been experien saying shedding since I entered perimenopause, which was a couple of years ago. So I'm now taking Nutrafol's women's balance formula. I've been taking that for a couple of years now and it's really helped to reduce that Hair shedding. They have different formulas depending on what stage you are going through in your life. They even have postpartum. Another time when I experienced hair shedding and I know what you're thinking, you may have heard of Neutrophil's hair growth supplements and wondered do they actually work? It's a fair question. Many hair over promise and under deliver. But neutral is different. As the number one dermatologist recommended hair growth supplement brand, it's trusted by over 1.5 million people and is clinically tested to deliver real results in just three to six months. And I appreciate that because while a lot of supplements rely solely on ingredient studies, Neutral clinically tests its final formulations using advanced hair measurement tools like hair counter counts. Pull tests to track real improvements in growth, the quality of your hair shedding and texture. And it's not just backed by studies. Their research is published in peer reviewed journals and vetted by doctors. And that ensures that scientific rigor is there with reliable results. So this summer, stop worrying about your hair and start making memories. For a limited time, Nutrifal is offering our listeners $10 off your first month subscription and free shipping. Guest Expert
So let's talk about afterwards. So how long should you wait before putting on clothes, applying makeup? What's your instruction there?
Carlene Higgins
Okay, so I would say about 30 minutes. You want your, it will be tacky but you want that just to kind of tone down a little bit makeup. I don't suggest like heavy foundations or anything like that. If you do, you can do the padding with the concealer around areas and you can do that again. I would say about 30 minutes is.
Guest Expert
Like a nice solid and don't cross your legs like I did.
Jenny Blafer
Oh shoot.
Guest Expert
Any skincare ingredients to avoid that night.
Carlene Higgins
So after you rinse you want to make sure you stay away from like any acids like the salicylic acid, the glycolic acid, great hydrating products or like hyaluronic acid is fine. And anything moisturizing is good. But anything that's stripping the skin, that's not good.
Jenny Blafer
Yeah. So the ones that you do, you rinse after how long? I guess it depends.
Carlene Higgins
Depends if you do like an express or a regular. So the express is anywhere from two to six hours or the regular is eight hours or longer. It plateaus at eight hours. But the express, two to six hours. The, the sooner you rinse, the lighter it will be and then the eight hours it's 20. Just like once you rinse at eight.
Jenny Blafer
Hours, that's what you are, that's the level. And what about. I don't know if. Cause I didn't experience your treatment. But what is the smell like? Cause I still feel like that is something that people are curious about. May find a little off putting sometimes. What do you think? Has it improved?
Carlene Higgins
It has improved. Yes, it has improved. The smell is based on the DHA and it reacting to your phone. So you may have a smell with one product but not another. It's not like you are going to have a smell with all of them. I think the way you apply it also helps. So we feather around the armpit the way we spray. So we don't like spray the armpit. I think that helps as well. But yeah, it just really depends on the product and your ph and finding what would work for you. But I think overall it has improved.
Jenny Blafer
Okay, I realized I forgot to mention something very important. If you're self tanning at home, how do you get the back and do it?
Carlene Higgins
Well, yeah, that's difficult. So there's a couple things. One, they have this long foam kind of like what it's like a towel.
Guest Expert
Mitt on a stick.
Carlene Higgins
Well, you can't do that. Okay. So you can put your mitt on your aloofa or a hanger. So the hanger, you know that side and then just put it back. It's a little difficult. Or the loofah, you can put it on. You just want to make sure it's, you know, adheres to it so that you can get it. But they do make this long kind of band like applicator that's velvet. The same material as the mitt.
Guest Expert
Oh, I see.
Carlene Higgins
So you put your foam on there and then you just go like this.
Guest Expert
Oh, who's making that? I wonder.
Jenny Blafer
I feel like I've seen those like on Amazon.
Carlene Higgins
I was just gonna say Amazon has linked to one.
Jenny Blafer
Yes, all kinds what are your favorite at home brands? What's a good F?
Carlene Higgins
Yeah, So I like now that you bring up Salty Face. I really do and I have a lot of clients that. That like Salty Face. Yeah. Again, I go to Sephora, I'm gonna purchase like the Isle of Paradise has a really good spray. I do like the Tan Luxe brand. I think when you go to like the higher end stores or like Sephora as compared to a drugstore, there's a difference in the. The DHA quality.
Guest Expert
Oh.
Carlene Higgins
I think the DHA in those stores are a little more rich, whereas the drug store has a hint more golden to it. So wherever these companies are sourcing their dha, that's where, like that's where you're going to. You want the best quality dha.
Guest Expert
Oh, I didn't realize there were different qualities of dha.
Carlene Higgins
Yes. So you can get dha. I mean, you can get it from Europe, Australia, China. They. They formulate it in the US and it really depends. You want to make sure you get it from a good quality formulator.
Guest Expert
Okay.
Carlene Higgins
Manufacturer to bring to your formulator.
Jenny Blafer
What are your thoughts on Bondi Sands? I feel like they've really popped off.
Carlene Higgins
Oh, yeah. I do like Bondi Sense as well. They have a professional and retail. They have a really good foam too.
Jenny Blafer
Yeah.
Carlene Higgins
Oh, gosh, they're so right.
Jenny Blafer
I just know, like, yeah, a lot of Aussie. Because it's Aussie to your point. And they really stay out of the sun. Of course. Yeah. And I think a lot of brand. A lot of sunless tanner brands. There's another one called Loving Tan.
Carlene Higgins
Everyone uses the Loving Tan foam. That is like.
Jenny Blafer
It's a cult favorite. Yes. Yeah.
Carlene Higgins
Huge following. Now that you're saying it.
Jenny Blafer
I'm still obsessed with. I still think the best tan I ever got. I don't get it a lot. Is Saint Tropez in terms of the. I got a spray tan with it and I really like it.
Carlene Higgins
Oh, they're professional line. Yeah, they have a great professional line as well. They've been around a long time.
Guest Expert
Yeah.
Jenny Blafer
Oh, geez.
Guest Expert
Now you have your own line, is that right?
Carlene Higgins
I have a professional line.
Guest Expert
Professional line, yes. Okay, got it. So not a nothing you can buy at Sephora, but I understand that you customize all of your shades to your client, like the shade you're going to use and also the texture. So maybe you can tell us about that and how. What's the best way for us to find a tone that's going to suit us if we are buying it off the shelf.
Carlene Higgins
So, yes, the questions, like when you're about to self tan, whether it's with a professional or at home, is, what's my skin tone? What's my skin type? Dry, oily, normal, and what's my desired color? So those are the main questions to know where to go from there. I think if you have dry skin, you want to look at the ingredients on the bottle. Make sure it's free from alcohols, which will dry out your skin free from fragrance. That's difficult with a lot of retail brands. And make sure it's more hydrating. Hyaluronic acid. Glycerin's really great. So you really want to know your skin and then the product. So color wise, I always say less is more. Just start off small to see how your skin reacts. With the dha, you don't want to start off with like a heavy coat.
Guest Expert
So you're able to adjust the tint. Now, are you looking at people's undertones to their skin to see what will suit them and what won't? Because at home, I think it was last year, possibly the year before Bondi Sands, they launched this techno color line where they have. They have one that's like a cool undertone. They have one for olive tones, like these different ones. So I just wondered if you knew, like, if you'd heard anything or if there's anything helpful that could help to make sure we're not using something that's going to look either too muddy or too orangey for our skin tone.
Carlene Higgins
Right. So when you, when you have a sunless product, they have undertones. Yes. The warm, the cool green olive violet.
Jenny Blafer
I love paradise does that too, I think. Yes, yes.
Carlene Higgins
Yeah. So they're going off of the undertone or the cosmetic bronzer. So you just want to know what works best for you and your skin. Like, I'm better with warmer colors and to go from there stays. So it is important to know, like, yeah. What works for you as far as color and undertones. Warm, cool.
Guest Expert
Okay.
Jenny Blafer
We were looking at your Instagram and I noticed one of your posts for Khloe Kardashian, the makeup artist. Mary Phillips liked the post. And then us being beauty little detectives, we were wondering if it's like, how you work with a makeup artist for a red, purple look. I know a lot of, like, facialists and makeup artists work together.
Guest Expert
Exactly.
Jenny Blafer
So how do you factor in and decide on a look?
Carlene Higgins
So I like to just be proactive and go and DM or text if I have their number doing the client. And is there anything specific, you know, that you want me to do? Sometimes the makeup artists don't want them to do their face. Sometimes they want just, like, a nice glow or their skin really needs color in order to amplify the makeup. So I think it's so important to talk to them and communicate and also to, like, establish your professionalism so that they're like, oh, wow, she's really proactive with this. But, yeah, I will. I have talked to Mary before. Like, is there anything you want me to avoid? Because they're also working with skin in a different capacity, like lotions and makeup and lighting, so it's really invaluable to have those relationships.
Jenny Blafer
I like that. It takes a village, you know, because there's, like, the facialist before that, probably before a week or two before they come to see you, and then they see Mary, like, the day of.
Guest Expert
Well, especially for the Oscars. You can only imagine.
Jenny Blafer
Oh, my goodness.
Guest Expert
Does a dress tone ever influence what tan you're gonna give them?
Carlene Higgins
Totally.
Guest Expert
Like, do you get sent stylists in advance what they're gonna wear?
Carlene Higgins
So you can sometimes. Yeah, sometimes stylists will send me a client. They were like, we changed a dress. She needs a glow. Or I'll go to the client, and she's like, here's my dress. This is what I'm wearing. Which is super cool to see. And then we're like, oh, okay. They're wearing. I mean, a lot of times there's bright pink. And I'm like, okay, let's, like, maybe. And they're like, I want to go dark. I'm like, wait, let's discuss.
Guest Expert
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Carlene Higgins
So, yeah, the dress.
Guest Expert
There was a celebrity. I can't remember who now, but, yeah, there was a time when, like, I saw on the red carpet, and they had this dress, and they had this tan going on. And I was like, they should have talked to each other, because it was like the. They weren't. It was like. It wasn't talking to each other. The tone of the dress and the tone of the skin. So I think that can happen.
Jenny Blafer
All I think about when I see a white dress on the red carpet is, is there self tanner on the inside of that dress? I think it. Cause it could probably happen. I'm sure not with your clients, because you're a total pro, but how do you prevent something like that when you're, like, dealing with designer goods that are maybe going bad? Do you have a transfer hack?
Guest Expert
Do you have insurance?
Carlene Higgins
Yeah, right. How much was that so yes, you want to make sure they're rinsing well with a soap. If they're wearing white. I always say rinse with a soap. Whereas normally everyday people that are just like rinse and soap in necessary areas. Because we don't want to strip the tan. If we're trying to make sure the dress is, you know, we're preserving the dress, then. Yeah. Yes, we want to use soap. Because you want to get again that cosmetic bronzer off of the skin because that's what's transferring onto the dress. We come across this a lot with brides. They're like, I don't know if I want to do it because of my dress. As long as you do it early and you soap, you're good, then you're good.
Guest Expert
Is this potentially a case for the.
Carlene Higgins
Clear waters back to that clear is good as well. Yeah, it clears really good. Good for brides because then they don't have to worry about any of that transfer. But then they don't have that instant cosmetic bronze.
Guest Expert
The guide. Right, the guide. Because literally you're seeing that immediate color. That's the guide. And I have tried and I'm like, okay, brain turn on. I have to try and remember where I just touched and where I didn't. And yeah, it's a journey. It is streaky. I don't know how to master those waters on the body that it's not easy.
Carlene Higgins
It's also difficult for a professional, your first time with somebody. Cause you can't be like when you saw it, it was like, do you wanna be this color lighter or darker or whatever the questions are. And when it's clear, it's like, here you go. Yeah, yeah.
Guest Expert
You get what you get. And don't get upset.
Jenny Blafer
I do have to commend Alix Earle for being the realest girl on TikTok. For showing her filthy white sheets. Cause she self tans and just gets right into bed. And then she's shown it at like expensive hotels and she's just like, sorry, Alex was here.
Carlene Higgins
That's her stamp.
Guest Expert
Yeah.
Jenny Blafer
I think she does it herself a lot or has a professional come, whatever. But it's like it happens and it. And like your linens can get if you're sleeping in it. That happens, right?
Carlene Higgins
Yeah, yeah. I always suggest long pajamas just to protect your hands, your feet. I mean like anything. Your sheep sheets, maybe crossing legs.
Guest Expert
Yeah.
Carlene Higgins
And things like that.
Guest Expert
Yeah, I know I gotta look there, guys. No, but I'm so guilty of that. I'm perpetual. Perpetual. I know hard not to contouring with self tanner. Because you've done this before for like campaigns and stuff. Maybe you could talk to us about that. And is this something that could ever be used in real life? Do you have any tips on the best way to kind of do the look yourself or.
Carlene Higgins
Yes. So again, going back to the kabuki brush, like, it's totally doable to do a contour and to highlight some, you know, definition. I love a cheekbone contour. I love to get this right here jawline using that brush. But I would say if you're going to do an at home application, you want to do the whole application and then on top.
Guest Expert
Do not cost on its own.
Carlene Higgins
Yeah, yeah. I mean, you could, but it's. You need to go faint because the tone needs to match.
Guest Expert
Yeah, totally. I've thought about doing it before. I'm trying to remember if I ever have just like in the hollows of my cheeks.
Carlene Higgins
Yeah. A little semi permanent makeup.
Guest Expert
I feel like you could do that maybe with the. I do like the Charlotte Tilbury face serum.
Carlene Higgins
I need to try that.
Guest Expert
It's really the hyaluronic acid one. It's very plumping and it's not that hard to use.
Jenny Blafer
Yeah. If you have an oops moment. Like, what happens if you do a self tan and maybe you're not thrilled with the results. What are the fixes? Like, do you redo it? Do you try to scrub it all off? Like, if you messed up your legs, should you start all over again? Like, what are the fixes?
Carlene Higgins
So that's why I always say less is more. Starting. Start small and build. But let's say you've built and you're now regretting that decision. An Epsom salt bath is really good for an overall just kind of tone it down. Saunas, a jacuzzi, something like that to get that tan to come off. Exfoliating mitt. If you have like little things here.
Jenny Blafer
And there, what about preventing that fade? Or like, how often are you re upping if you're doing the full body tan at home, like, how long?
Guest Expert
How do you make it last?
Jill Dunn
Longer?
Jenny Blafer
Yeah.
Carlene Higgins
Moisturize, hydration. Drinking water every time you get out of the shower. Moisturize your skin. Moisturize your skin. That will help your tan fade. Nice and seamless. And then I love a gradual self tanner. I mean, I always kind of recommend the Jergens one. It's so great.
Jenny Blafer
Yeah.
Carlene Higgins
And then you can wherever you. Your skin creases, like inside your elbows, in between your boobs. The skin is very Your neck, the skin is very thin, so then you're sweating. And so that's. That tan is going to rub off faster in those areas. So we need to make sure we kind of apply something there to keep the overall body even. So I love a gradual that you can dip in a kabuki brush and get those areas, the gradual also for the leg to keep them.
Guest Expert
You know who else came out with a gradual last year, James Reed relaunched. Yeah, they did a total brand relaunch. So it's called Self Glow by James Reed and he has now that's the gradual tan moisturizer for face. There's one for face and one for body. But it's very like skincare esque, you know what I mean? Now don't get me wrong, I still managed to make my legs streaky, but that's probably, probably because I never ever exfoliate my legs or moisturize them. So, you know, sometimes you have to accept responsibility. It may not be the product itself, you know, Homework. Yeah, the homework. Do the homework, guys. Do the work.
Jenny Blafer
What's realistic to expect your at home tan to last for like a week.
Carlene Higgins
Or I would say five days at home. It's going to come off faster than the professional application. But and it depends on your skin, I would say five to seven days.
Jenny Blafer
Right?
Carlene Higgins
Seven, if you're lucky.
Jenny Blafer
Okay. Okay, good.
Guest Expert
And is there a sunscreen that's better? Like is it better to use mineral or chemical over top of a self tan or does it matter?
Carlene Higgins
I like natural or very mild ingredients. Children's sunscreens, a moisturizing sunscreen. I don't like aerosol. It has too much alcohol that can break up the tan.
Guest Expert
That's a great, that's a great tip.
Jenny Blafer
Well, I've learned a lot. Thank you so much, Jenny. This is awesome.

Breaking Beauty Podcast: Episode Summary
"Are You Self-Tanning The Right Way? With Khloe Kardashian’s Self-Tan Guru, Sunkissed by Jenni"
Release Date: June 11, 2025
In this episode of the Breaking Beauty Podcast, hosts Jill Dunn and Carlene Higgins delve deep into the art and science of self-tanning. They welcome Jenny Blafer, known professionally as Sunkissed by Jenny and Khloe Kardashian’s go-to self-tan expert, to share her insider knowledge on achieving the perfect sun-kissed glow.
Jill and Carlene kick off the discussion by highlighting the significant advancements in self-tanning over the past two decades. Jenny emphasizes how self-tanners have become essential not just for fair-skinned individuals but for all skin tones, offering an even complexion and a natural glow.
Jenny Blafer [01:18]: "It's great that it's evolved so that people of all skin tones use it to even out that skin tone and get this sun-kissed glow that really you can only get from a self-tanner."
Carlene adds that the self-tanning trend has surged, especially with influencers and celebrities advocating for healthier skin alternatives over UV tanning.
Carlene Higgins [03:00]: "Mostly for red carpet, it's for smoothness, evenness, just to take the edge off."
Jenny Blafer discusses the differences between professional spray tans and at-home applications. Professional services like hers use advanced techniques and high-quality DHA formulations to ensure a flawless and personalized tan.
Jenny Blafer [04:04]: "She's trusted by some of the biggest names in Hollywood... she does program recommendations for at-home use."
The hosts compare the meticulous preparation and application process in professional settings versus the more flexible but potentially streaky at-home methods.
A critical aspect highlighted in the episode is the importance of proper skin preparation to achieve an even self-tan. Carlene outlines the essential steps:
Exfoliation: Removing dead skin cells to create a smooth canvas.
Carlene Higgins [16:13]: "Exfoliating with like a mitt, something very abrasive but not heavy with oils..."
Moisturizing: Hydrating areas like elbows, knees, and feet to prevent uneven absorption.
Carlene Higgins [16:02]: "If you're extremely dry, I like for them to moisturize before we spray."
Shaving: Done 12 to 24 hours prior to tanning to allow the skin to settle.
Following application, it's advised to wait approximately 30 minutes before dressing or applying makeup to let the tan set properly.
Carlene Higgins [36:03]: "I would say about 30 minutes... don't wear heavy foundations."
Jenny and Carlene share expert tips to avoid common pitfalls like streaking and uneven color:
Use of Tools: Employing kabuki brushes, mitts, and spray guns for precise application.
Carlene Higgins [26:19]: "Use a kabuki brush mitt... for different parts of the body."
Layering Products: Starting with a light application and building up to achieve the desired shade.
Jenny Blafer [30:04]: "Less is more... start small and build."
Targeted Hydration: Applying barrier creams or lotions on porous areas to ensure even tan distribution.
Carlene Higgins [24:48]: "Hydrate porous areas like elbows and feet to prevent excessive absorption."
Several high-quality self-tanning products are recommended throughout the episode:
Tan Luxe: Praised for its clean, user-friendly formulas and is available at Sephora.
Carlene Higgins [29:21]: "Tan Luxe has really good products. Sephora... user-friendly."
Nuda: A Canadian brand offering a popular tan water spray.
Carlene Higgins [29:57]: "Nuda has a tan water spray that's very prevalent."
Bondi Sands and Loving Tan: Both are highlighted for their professional-grade foams and widespread popularity.
Jenny Blafer [40:24]: "They have a really good foam too... Loving Tan is a cult favorite."
