The following podcast is a dear media production. Welcome to Breaking Beauty the podcast, all about the breakthrough people, products and moments in beauty. We're your hosts, Jill Dunn and Carlene Higgins. Hey, everyone. Welcome back to Breaking Beauty Podcast, the podcast about the breakthrough people, products and moments in in beauty. I'm Carlene Higgins. I'm here with Jill Dunn. Hi, Jill.
B
Hey, Carlene. And hey, Pod fam. So it's been a minute since we've done one of our hashtag damn good episodes. The last one we did was a doozy. It was our Amazon prime episode, which we pulled together in about four days. People seem to like it. I think there were a lot of good deals and it was like a mega sale this year.
A
Like, it was four days long. Everyone shopped till they dropped, till their fingers dropped. And we're doing another shopping episode today. And Joel, I. I guess I. I'll be embarrassed on our behalf because we haven't kept up with our hall of fame. And I feel like our listeners love our hall of Fame. You know, we are beauty editors by trade. Beauty editors turn beauty podcasters. We always say we've swatched it all. We've seen it all. Our hall of Fame is kind of like a roundup of what we do every month with our damn goods where we really, we try like a bazillion products. We tell you only about what we think is hashtag damn good. And our hall of fame is like what's risen to the top even from that list. So the stuff that we just have kept on our top shelf ever since we talked about them, they're kind of in permanent rotation. That's what hall of fame is.
B
But you can always Google Breaking Beauty Podcast hall of Fame and it takes you to a vertical on our website. It's always there. And we have painstakingly divided these into categories. So it's like nitty gritty, best cleansing oil, best moisturizer, best serum, best bronzer that we believe have stood the test of time. So here we are. We're going to share some new ones that have made the cut.
A
I think of these as like our awards. If Breaking Beauty Podcast were to give out beauty awards, this would be it. It would make our hall of Fame. By the way, that's H A U L of Fame. Little play on words there. We're kind of like crowning these products, but we're also taking some out, just like you said, Joel, because sadly, some of these products or brands have met their demise. And that happens. So as we go through, we're Gonna give little updates on those. That's kind of sad. But the good news is, like, there's still brands popping up all the time.
B
Yes. And I think right now, what's trending and what is going to lead the charge and lead a lot of the growth in beauty is expert led brands. So, of course we saw that Chris McMillan, he just was on our show talking about his new line. He's a career hairdresser for, like, over 40 years, working with Jennifer Aniston. Then we're seeing Mary Phillips come on the scene, who, of course, Pionee. On social media, the idea of underpainting your makeup for contouring, it's been around for a long time, but she brought it into the new, modern digital age. And I haven't tried those products yet. I'm very excited. But I just think in general, expert led brands, whether it's skin, hair, makeup, it just makes sense that those brands are going to flourish when maybe some of the celebrity ones are petering off a bit.
A
Absolutely. That line's called mph, by the way. I can't wait to try that as well. And then, Jill, you were saying that Sally Hughes and Sam Chapman have something cooking.
B
Yes. This is only available online in. In the uk, as far as I know, but they are two beauty gurus, of course, in the uk. So Sally Hughes is a incredible longtime journalist and Sam Chapman was one half of Pixie Woos, one of the very first beauty YouTube channels out there with her sister Nick Nicola. Sam Chapman and Sally Hughes have developed a brand and their first product is a tubing mascara. And I absolutely need to get this. It's called Wrap Party. So I think the name of their brand is called Rum, and I am very, very curious. And Sally Hughes is like transparent to a fault. Like, when she's talking about her product and brand, she will literally put in giant letters on it, hashtag ad, hashtag founder, even though she's talking about her own product. So it's like you don't get more transparent than her.
A
And, yeah, she's got tons of credibility. And actually she wrote that book about the iconic. The most iconic beauty products in beauty history. So that's. I think we have some synergies there. And definitely apropos of today's episode. And I'm happy because she's a journalist and she's one half of this team. And of course, I'm going to be launching my product soon, so I'm really excited to share that with you.
B
Do you have a timeline of when you're going to share it?
A
Yeah, definitely. I want it to come out the first week of September. I'm just so nervous because of all, like, delays that can happen that I'm, I don't want to jinx it. So I'm going to wait until then to talk about it. I think that's better.
B
But everybody follow Carlene's substack because she has revealed the name. Let's not spoil it here, but go follow your substack.
A
Yes, exactly. Well, all of that being said, I think it's time to get into our hall of Fame updates, so we're jumping into it after the break.
B
Merit Beauty is one of our show partners this week. I think that Merit Beauty is genius because they're really telling us you don't need a 12 step complicated makeup routine to get out the door and look pretty and look and feel your best. They're simplifying everything in your makeup routine and really curating it so you can get on that five minute face and get out the door and feel great about it. So all of their products are clean, vegan, and crueltyfree, and they're really all about this less is more approach to makeup. It is really so effortless. It's impossible to mess up. And some of their iconic products include the Flush Bomb. It's this dome shaped, cute, sheer buildable cream blush that blends seamlessly and you can just use your fingertips to sort of work it into the skin. You can apply it honestly in the back of an Uber. And they're minimalist. You guys might be familiar with that. It's a foundation and concealer. Kind of looks like a chubby pencil in one. And so it's really good to do a targeted face application just for coverage where you want to put it. And don't sleep on their skin care. They're great skin serum. It's hydrating and plumping and it's great, great for that dewy base for a makeup look. So it's time to simplify your routine, head to meritbeauty.com and get their signature makeup bag free with your first order. Once again, it's time to simplify your routine and head on over to meritbeauty.com and get their signature makeup bag free with your first order. I am bringing you candid conversations that will equip you with everything you need to live your best life and look good doing it. Think of well as your go to resource for all of the latest in wellness and me as your Internet bestie. New episodes drop every Wednesday. Hope to see you there.
A
All right, so let's kick it off. Where else? At the very beginning, washing your face. Face cleansers. Jill, is there anything you're adding or taking away to this category?
B
I am adding a product that's a bit old school, but it's newer, newer to me. And that's the Jan Marini line. It's the Jan Marini Glycolic acid cleanser. It's US$44.70 in Canada. And this product line I got reacquainted with from the LA facialist when she was on our show a couple of different times. Candace. And then subsequent to that, Ariel Laurie also talked about this product. So I was like, I must try it. And I do have to say, if you're somebody who gets like comedones or little bumps or breakouts, it is really, really good. So I just find it really helps keep your keeps your pores clear. It is older school ingredient, if I can say it that way. But it's still incredibly effective. And I think I said before on the show, it's not sexy looking at all like it couldn't be more basic, but it is magic inside that bottle.
A
Yeah. File this under it's ugly, but it works. This is what we're talking about. Products that stand the test of time. So I love that you found an ingredient that really. This is more has been known as an esthetician line distributed through estheticians. So this is where I think through word of mouth, people have found it. They do like zero marketing. It's just a product that works.
B
It doesn't leave your skin sandpaper dry, but you do want to leave it on my tip with anything like this that has an active ingredient. It's like I do massage it in for that full 60 seconds. So you are getting it. And the full name of it, I believe I said glycolic. It's actually called Bio Glycolic Face Cleanser.
A
Okay. All right. And we've been trying to get Jan Marino on the show for so long, but we've been have having trouble doing a face to face. But always welcome because I feel like she's so respected in the industry, she's.
B
An education queen, that it Would be great to hear.
A
Yeah, like firsthand. I'd love for our listeners to get that bit of education. Now I'm going to swing the total opposite way on the spectrum and jump to toners because I am currently obsessed with the road glazing milk hydrating toner and this isn't a brand new product, but I just started using it this summer and I am obsessed with it.
B
Very good.
A
$32 US 52 in Canada for the large size and it's a nice big size and I just love that it's, it's so I've been in love with cream essences like the Laneige for a long time and I've talked about those. It's all about like barrier protection, getting that extra layer of hydration without the thickness, you know, without feeling like you're layering moisturizer after moisturizer. I find that this one just feels so like calming and creamy. It's filled with Ceramides beta glucan. So it's just all about like calming and, and barrier support. So for me, this summer I'm going to be wearing this under sunscreen. So again I'm not layering like a moisturizer with a sunscreen and. But I could see it using it all winter too, like, and it's great for all ages. That's the thing. Like road you think is just Gen Alpha or whatever it is now, but I feel like this is great for mature skin as well. It's just a good product.
B
It really is. And I will say that the Indeed labs Goat milky toner. And that's not goat milk, it's goat as in greatest of all time. That is a very good dupe for the road one and I think it's 14 so sleeper hit there as well.
A
All right, what's next? Do you have any serums, Jill?
B
Yes, I need to talk about serums because I happen to know that within our hall of fame, serums is like the most visited category. So we need to do a shout out here and I do want to shout out the Caudalie Vino Perfect dark spot serum from caudalie. It's around 120 Canadian dollars. I believe it's like 90 US and this just does such an incredible job at overall brightening. I can't remember the exact statistic, but it's like one is sold every 30 seconds or something. It's like the number 1D spot serum at Sephora and it is just really powerful in terms of like that overall brightening. And I've seen A few friends that have, like, emptied multiple bottles of it. And it is like that uniformity that you get on your skin is incredible. And I don't know if people. I know that it's become really cult like and people have really become fans of it because of TikTok and whatnot. Like, transformed their skin with it on 100% hall of Fame worthy.
A
Yeah. Okay.
B
Love that.
A
What about moisturizer, Jill? Let's get this full, like 2025 routine in check.
B
Yes. So the In Beauty Project Extreme Cream anti aging, firming and lifting refillable moisturizer, I believe that launched in like 2023, and this has just taken off like wildfire. I personally have emptied three of them.
A
Oh, wow.
B
And it's just the best texture. It's targeting all aspects of aging, I would say, like wrinkles, texture. And especially in the wintertime when I find it's very hard for me as an oily skin person to find a moisturizer that is quote unquote, extreme enough to hold up to the elements, but that doesn't make me break out. And it really hits that sweet spot. And it's refillable, so I will give them points for that. And it's 68 Canadian dollars and it's around 50 in the U.S. so it's very affordable.
A
It's such a great price. I mean, people have compared this to being a dupe for Augustinus batter. I. I don't know, but that's. That's the word on the street.
B
It's just formulated very, very well. One caveat is I wouldn't mind if they change the packaging. Whenever I see it on my vanity, I just think, yeah, this isn't really on brand for me. It's like a frosted dated pink. I'm just gonna say it. I'm sorry, but it is. They're going with my Canadianism. I'm sorry, but I regardless, even with that, I have finished it multiple times.
A
Yeah, no, I hear you. There was that confusion when In Beauty first launched where I absolutely thought it was a brand for kids. And I don't think we really realized until we dropped into their event in LA and we met the founders and spoke to the product developer when they were launching this product. And that's when we understood that, oh, it's actually for all ages.
B
So it wasn't until the last little bit where they've gotten more into the skin care. And then my other shout out in the moisturizers is from Medicaid. Full disclosure, I got introduced to this brand because they are an advertiser with us. Use code breaking20 if you want to save this brand is incredible. It's a ceramide night cream. I love it. I've also emptied multiple of these and it's just really amazing for barrier protection. And they just got bought by l' Oreal for about a billion dollars. So yeah, they're crushing it.
A
Yeah, they're legit for sure. And why not save 20, you know? Now a little bit of sad news on the sunscreen front. We have to remove 11 by Venus Williams unrivaled Sun Serum SPF 35. I love that product much. But when we talked about it, I revealed I had somehow figured out that it's essentially the same product as Ava Issa Serum Drops, which is also in our hall of fame. So if you're looking for that product and you're like, oh my God, I haven't been able to find it because it's such a unique kind of emulsion, hence the name drops, then you can go ahead and get the ava Issa. SO11 by Venus Williams was put on hiatus. She announced that her whole line, 11, including the clothing line, was going on hiatus and the intention was to relaunch it. She wanted to go away and sort of think about it and come back. So that was back in 2024, early 2024. She was still waiting, but we've heard nothing. So. And I don't know, I've also heard that the sunscreen company, which is Canadian by the way, that they don't do private labeling anymore. So if she does come back, it, it likely won't be with that product or it will be with the reformulation of that product. So there is an update there which I think unfortunately will be a recurring theme in this episode about some, you know, black creators who. Black founders brands who have been shuddering.
B
Yeah, it's quite upsetting. And it's someone especially as notable as Venus Williams that is. Yeah, it's upsetting because we want to be able to support.
A
Absolutely. And it was legitimately a very, very good product. Now, Jill, a topic close to your heart. Acne must. This is the category we created because you're like, I'm all over this. So what do you have to add for 2025?
B
I need to add the Sophie Pavett Mendelic Clearing Serum. This is created by Sophie Pavitt. She is a New York based esthetician. Her product line is in Sephora.
A
Now.
B
She launched her products a bit about two and a half years ago, I believe. So it Is high time that we added one of them to the hall of fame again. I have personally emptied this one multiple times. I've talked about it multiple times on the show and it is still in my routine. I really like it for the giant zits you get on your chin. It is just a lot more gentle as a spot treatment or as a clearing serum than some of the others out there like benzoyl peroxide and those have their place too. But I think if you are someone who's not 20 years old, this is a great option for you. Clears pores. It's gentle. Very cool branding, packaging. And when you're talking about like what you're proud to have on your top shelf, this is it. It feels like cool even though you're addressing acne, which is a bummer.
A
And I just really trust Sophie Pavitt. She's been on our show and we're going to link to that episode in our show notes and on our website @breaking beauty podcast.com everybody but she is known as the Acne Whisper and I think she really knows her stuff. For an esthetician when it comes to like clearing acne and all of the different types of acne and different how to set up your routine, just to.
B
Let you know, it's pretty affordable as well. It's 54 and I think for a serum that is pretty affordable. The full name is the Mandelic Acid Exfoliating and Clearing Serum. And she just launched the most adorable travel sizes of all of her products which she had sent me. And it's great, it's great to have on the move. So if you are acne prone, give her a follow, follow her substack buyer products. Check it out.
A
And for real, I need you to send me that PR contact because I need to get some more products. She's launched a ton of products since we talked to her, so there are other things that are on my list.
B
And I once got a facial from her, everybody at her studio in New York. She just moved to a brand new studio. So book in with her one of her estheticians. Like she's actively still offering services now.
A
Another one that we have to remove though that people used to love for acne, but it's just, I don't know what's happening with it. The Glam Glow Super Blood. Remember this product?
B
Yeah. We actually had somebody in our Facebook chat room asking about this product because they loved and they were trying to find it.
A
Okay, well this, this product is hanging on by the skin of its teeth. Okay. So we're gonna have to remove it until we know what's up. But the Glam Glow site isn't accepting any new orders. But it's still available on Amazon, presumably until stock runs out. They did get a new president for this line as part of the Estee Lauder, like, shake up that, you know, I think there's Glam Glow, there's Smashbox, there's Two Faced is all under this kind of umbrella, right under Estee Lauder. And so if the new president, like, decides to keep this one, I think she came in in, like, January, then we might see this Glam Glow, like, come back to life. But until now. Yeah, it's not looking good.
B
Okay, that's too bad. I mean, listen, here's the thing. It's very cyclical when it comes to face masks. You couldn't go into Sephora and not, like, be, not encounter a purple glitter mask from Glam Glow, the original, the OG which we got the story of. It's a phenomenal backstory. Like, Keanu Reeves is involved and everything. And it is. It was such a glimpse into that era. But now when everybody is obsessed with K Beauty, meta cube, bio collagen, all of these masks that turn, that go sheer when you're wearing them, and, like, it's just a whole other. It just feels like night and day. In terms of the innovation.
A
Yes. Yeah, totally agree. I think it was just the evolution didn't work out so well, you know what I mean? Like, I think as soon as they launched glitter face masks, it was like unicorn and all that. I was like, oh, no, it's jumped the shark. Like, I think what would have been better would be to branch out into, like, a whole line around super mud or something like that.
B
I think they might have had that at one time, but they might see them coming. They might have some innovation. I really could. Because people still love masks and sheet masks and that.
A
That one worked. I think that's the thing too, is that that the Glam Glow Super Mud, it really worked.
B
It is tingly and it. It was an exfoliating dream. So I don't think we've seen the end of it, but it will definitely look a lot different, I think, when it comes back.
A
Cool. All right. This episode is brought to you in part by Vegamore. We've been talking all about the midlife tune up today. Everything to do with your skin and your face. How about your scalp and your hair? I'm pushing 50. I noticed when I put my hair up in a ponytail, I'VE got this gappiness that happens at the side. So it's time for next level hair care. This is where Vegamore's Grow Plus Advanced supplements come in. It was developed by MDS and it's backed by vigorous clinical placebo Studies. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. And now back to our show. Okay, let's move on to makeup. Unfortunately, we have to say goodbye to the OMA Beauty Foundation. I think this is another one where it's kind of hard to tell what's been going on about this. It's been a bit of a roller coaster story and it was actually covered in allure. We can link to it on our website from March of this year. But I think we talked about before how the founder of OMA stepped down and went under new leadership. That was Sharon Shooter. She was a guest on our show and it was kind of like a quiet goodbye. Not really sure what was going on there. And then apparently a company called MacArthur Beauty stepped in which people have been commenting is like a couple of white dudes behind it or something. And yeah, so she stepped down. Back in May 2023, everything went silent with OMA in August of 2023. Again, the private equity was December 2023. And then in November 2024, OMA Beauty announced its return. This is where we start kind of hearing like the people, the people are speaking and they're saying like they're not really loving what's going on there. And apparently Shooter, Sharon Shooter actually filed a lawsuit in February 2025 against MacArthur brain trust and subtle funding in, in LA. So, yeah, so I don't know what's happening there. Sounds like a mess, but it's a hot mess express. And I think for people who are fans of OMA Beauty, just like knowing this audience and this community probably aren't going to want to support and I think we're going to have to remember. Yeah, for now, for now, for now, for now. Stay tuned, guys.
B
Sharon really was the visionary behind it. So it's like, it's like anytime a founder parts ways, it's just, it's a bumpy road.
A
Personally, I'm going to be putting into this category is the House Labs Triclone Medium Coverage Foundation. It is so, so good. The cost is 49 US and 66 in Canada. And the good thing about House Labs is like, not only the formula is so good, where I just feel like it really kind of, it does feel like a high tech foundation where it just blends into your skin so beautifully. But the number of shades I feel like was really unexpected from a brand like House Labs.
B
Well, they had two stabs at it the first time out of the gate with the whole Amazon thing. It wasn't maybe the best fit but now they're come out guns ablazing and I feel like they really nailed it.
A
Absolutely. And I think this is a case where just like we talked about the second generation, and in this case literally the second generation celebrity brand, whoever she partnered with, they got smart about this and so they have true experts behind it now. It's not this white label crap and so it's genuinely a good product. Is, does Lady Gaga have anything to do with this formula? And hell no, absolutely not. But it's a beautiful formula, 51 shades. And so I think that this is definitely deserves its flowers.
B
I think in the last couple of years since we updated this hall of fame Carlene, I feel like skin tints have taken on a life of their own. They really have. From Sephora to drugstore to even Lisa Eldridge has launched one. Westman Atelier has the skin tint, the fountain dew drops or whatever they're called, can't remember off the top of my head.
A
Pretty much every brand I feel like now has a foundation and a skin tint.
B
That's right. That's right. And I think it kind of makes sense just coming out of the pandemic and people were tiptoeing back into wearing it and they wanted the dewy glow, the clean girl aesthetic or whatever. But Milk Makeup has delivered on a skin tint that actually lasts and I have emptied the one that I had. Have. I'm sorry, it just came out earlier this year. It's the Milk Makeup Hydro Grip 12 Hour Hydrating Gel Skin Tint. It's 54 Canadian dollars, 38 in the US and I have been wearing this all summer. I just really love that it gives more coverage than most skin tints. You don't feel it on your skin and they just nail their formulations. I, they every time there's. I, I will always try their base products, whether it's primer, foundations, skin tints, because I feel like they just get it.
A
I entirely agree. I think, I think it's. It to me, I'll always see like a bit of a mismatch between the branding and these formulas because the branding is so young, whereas I feel like the formulas are really all ages and it's like very deceiving. So that's why we' constantly pointing this out. But I think that this is a great foundation for oily skin types, like, like you said. So like a younger person I could see using this and loving it. Who wants a little bit more coverage, but, like still having that, that glow, but not a greasy glow. It's. It just glides so beautifully. But it works so well on mature skin as well. So I'm a huge fan of this. But I don't know how many mature skinned women are like, finding it or has have it on their radar.
B
Yeah, you know, I'm not entirely sure either. The one thing I would say is like, I love the, of the app application because it is like a squeeze tube, but it is a little messy. My one, my one caveat.
A
Yeah, it's. It always comes back to the packaging with Milk. We've talked about this with other products as well. This is what I'm saying. Anyway. Yeah, that's a good one. And otherwise in the makeup category, I think Dior has had a lot of hits in the past few years since we did our last hall of fame. I'm a huge, huge fan of. And, and I guess this goes back to Peter Phillips, who's there now. Is he still there? Right.
B
I do Believe so, yes.
A
Yeah. So he used to be the makeup artist at Chanel, rival company back in the day. But he truly is an artist, and so I think he just approaches everything with that lens where it it he really understands pretty and he's not there for, like, over the head trends. So even when they're doing highlighters and that kind of thing, they're just doing it so well. And for me, the Dior Rosy Glow powder blush, I just reach for again and again and again. And I truly was pretty much only a fan of cream blushes until I started using this powder blush. And then I was like, oh, hang on, I'm back. So I just want to say $42 US55 in Canada, which is a higher price of point. But in my opinion, the shades are curated so beautifully. They go on so nicely. It's worth every penny. It's just, just beautiful.
B
And we didn't really compare notes before we chatted today, but one thing I'm, I'm adding into the hall of fame is the Dior Forever skin contour stick, sculpting and bronzing face stick. There's four shades and I have not tried these. These are incredible. Not only do I love them, but multiple makeup artists who have been on our show have shouted these out. They are a bit of an investment. It' three Canadian dollars. It's US$50. They have light tan, which is light to medium skin. Then they have medium, which is medium to deep. And then they do have a deep, which I appreciate because we talked to Gloria on our show, and you know, people who have more melanated skin types, they deserve to have contour shades as well. And so I think that they've nailed the texture, the colors, beautiful application. And I feel like a makeup artist when I use this product, which is a quite a feat.
A
Yes, absolutely. Yeah. Loving, loving the Dior lately.
B
And don't forget, everybody, Daniel Martin, who was on our show not long ago, finally revealed the Dior makeup that he used on Mega Markle's wedding day. And it was pretty much all Dior. And that video has gone completely viral. So check out that episode. I'm sorry if you haven't yet.
A
Now, when it comes to lips, I think lip glosses have just been trending since we chatted last so much lip oils, more specifically, everybody, like this category has exploded. So we have to, we have to do some updating in that category. And sadly, we have to remove Ami Coley's lip treatment oil. But the brand is, is shuddering and there was A great article in the Cut that you put pointed out Jill, where the founder, Jada, talks about why she's closing the brand and how difficult it has been as a woman of color to keep the. Those stakes up to the excitement that was happening a few years ago and the demand and the listening that was going on from the industry and investors were just in a different place now. And people adore these products and everything it stands for.
B
So, yeah, she'll be back. I. And I really was very encouraged by how many people were, in her comments rooting for her, and we haven't seen the last of her creativity, her passion. You know, she's also a young mom, and even things is like she's trying to deliver beautiful products. And she talked about how when she's on the shelf at Sephora, they're going to her, well, these are the shades that are selling, so you need to make more like this. And she's like, well, I'm not necessarily about that. Or like, you know, it becomes this, who the cart is leading the horse, you know, and it's, it's. It can run away from you very quickly. And she. I felt like, put it very eloquently. So we're cheering you on and we know she'll be back.
A
All right, Jill, is there another indie brand, perhaps, that you are adding to the category? Yes.
B
So this brand is called Anfisa, and the product name is. I don't know how you pronounce it exactly, but it's. It's an. It's a N Dash gloss Ceramide lip treatment. It's US$45, and there's an original color. And they just launched a tint. It's kind of like a berry crumble, they call it. This product you and I were both introduced to by Candace from. Yes, the LA Facialist. And it's very, very indie. I believe it's out of Northern California. And it's got this cooling tip on it for application, and I just. Fine. Because it does have ceramides in there and plumping peptides. I. I love the results. My. My lips feel very, very nourished. But again, it doesn't have shea butter in there, which a lot of these lip peptide plumping oils and whatever they all do, which makes me break out around my mouth. So I have finished, I think three, if not four of these lip treatments.
A
I. I love it. I love it as well. Did you say what the price is?
B
It's 45 US and so far, it's only available in the US it's a real sleeper hit brand. It gives you this sheer, very glossy, almost a buttery finish, even though there is no shea butter in it.
A
Yeah, it's lovely. It's lovely. And I do. I think for people who love the you Beauty lip treatment, I have to say this is quite similar and quite a bit cheaper, even though it's not cheap. It's. It's that the you Beauty one is so expensive. So I think an Visa is sort of coming for that. That you Beauty one. Although I really want to try the Violette FR1 that launched. Yes. Just launched, which I have not tried yet, but it's supposed to be just, like, super nourishing and. And all that, and I just love her.
B
So we'll see. I think what's really telling, too, Carlene, is when we initially did this hall of fame list, we did not have a category for lip line. Think in the last three years, that is like, what's the lip combo? What's the lip combo? That is the moment. So it's like not only lip oil.
A
Kit, the lip duo. Yeah.
B
I have added in the makeup forever lip pencil in whatever, wherever. Not. I'm sorry, is the color that I really like. There's been so many other great lip pencils that have launched over the course of the last three or four years. Or. Yeah, three years, I would say is the. Is. Would you say three years? I guess. Yeah. Over the course of the last three years. But that one still stands the test of time. And even Daniel Martin was talking about the Mac lip liners. Those are still incredible.
A
And by the way, these makeup forever ones are 24 U. S and 32.50 in Canada. Just to keep. Keep you all in the loop about the pricing. But, yeah, those are iconic at this point, and I know they came out with those chubby pencils that are supposed to be used all over the face, which I did try. I thought they were okay. But not.
B
They're not hall of fame worth.
A
No, they're not. So just. Just a heads up.
B
Yeah. Before we move on to other makeup, I need to shout out the Lisa Eldridge Rouge Experience refillable lipstick. When we talk about innovation and what's standing the test of time. This is probably, like, my top pick for the updates that we.
A
Okay. Wow. Because, I mean, tell me more.
B
It is the first to market lipstick case and bullet, where every single piece of it is recyclable. There is zero plastic in it. Lisa Eldridge. Spoiler alert. She's going to be on our show in September. Dream guest. And this product is definitely a luxury item. You can get it engraved. It is 49 pounds for the case, and then the lipstick refills are 25 pounds each. It is just luxury personified quality. The glide of the lipsticks, the color curation, and everybody told her that it could not be done. And spoiler alert for our episode coming up, she said that heads of beauty conglomerates were personally phoning her up and saying, well done. We did not think that this could be done. So in terms of leading a category, she's doing it. And my favorite color is called Ribbon. That's her signature red shade.
A
Yeah. Okay. All right. Well, I can't wait for that episode to come out, because people have been waiting years with requests for Lisa Eldridge, another just skilled educator. Not only a makeup. Skilled makeup artist, but a skilled educator. So that combination is like Chef's kiss for our podcast. We love that. Now, when it comes to eyes, I do need to add to the brow category Maybelline Build a brow two in one brow pen and sealing gel. It's such an inexpensive product. That's so great. Basically, it's a liquid liner for your brows, which sounds insane. Like, normally, that wouldn't sound appealing to me at all because I always consider myself like a makeup novice, even though I've been doing this for so long. But it's just. It's such a kind of like, translucent formula that it's not that heavy like you actually are using a liquid liner. It's just the perfect amount of pigment for me anyway, where I can draw in, and it doesn't look like that. Groucho marks, like hard marker, and somehow it looks even more natural than a pencil in my mind.
B
So Maybelline, they love it. How much is it so cheap?
A
I think it's 16 in Canada and 13.
B
Okay.
A
U.S. i mean, come on. And it comes in, I think, five shades, six shades. Yeah, love that one. I am taking out another Maybelline product, though, the brow extensions fiber pomade crayon that I used to have in there. And, you know, that's the thing about Maybelline and drugstore brands like that, though. They just. It's this rotating door. You can't stay on top of it.
B
I agree. But they're back. They definitely have a lot of incredible product innovation happening. And Carlene, earlier this summer, we had a whole episode with the makeup artist, Ruby Hammer, and she was incredible. I mean, another British makeup. She's a legend, truly. And we did an entire episode about Priming 101 setting your makeup 101 and she was so phenomenal. So many great tips. She's really big on education as well. And I noticed a lot of people listen to that episode. So if you haven't checked it out yet, go back and listen or check us out on YouTube. But I think it kind of goes to show how many more products there are in this category, certainly since we started doing this podcast and even in the last couple of years. So maybe we need to update people on our faves.
A
First of all, we've, I think we've got to remove the Urban Decay All Nighter setting spray. And who knew that that was going to be such a hot topic on the heels of our priming and setting 101 episode? Because, I mean, that's probably the most iconic setting spray in existence over time. But the reason we'd be removing it is because it's been reformulated. And again, who knew that it would cause so much drama? So this was all over Instagram. I don't know if you saw this, Jill. I know you were on vacation, basically. To give you what happened in a nutshell, Urban Decay announced the reformulation of their All Nighter setting spray last week. It was the first update in the brand's 15 year history. And they were saying, you know, the next version, don't worry, it's going to last longer than ever with 24 hour where finer missed yada yada. And fascinatingly, Scandinavia, who was the original product manufacturer, actually stepped in on social media, came into the chat and said they wanted to distance themselves from the updated formula because they no longer worth work with Urban Decay. In other words, they couldn't stand by the new formula, so they wanted to distance themselves. And Urban Decay had ended their partnership. And Scandinavia kind of like called out the brand for trying to diminish the original product, right? Because they're saying this one's new and improved. So there, therefore this other one is not good anymore. But Scandinavia exists as its own brand and has their own setting spray. So they're like, wait a minute, then you're saying that our setting spray is not as good. So this is why we've had like cosmetic chemists, all these people jump into the chat to say, you know, we stand the original formula. So that's kind of what's up with that because we haven't tried the reformulated Urban Decay. That one's gonna have to come out. And if you go down this rabbit hole, there is a cooling ingredient. It's. It's some kind of derivative of menthol that was in it and that's coming out. Anyway, I don't know the full story. We can link to the article on our website.
B
I think they jumped into the chat because they saw a huge opportunity to sell their product. So there you go.
A
Yes, exactly. There you go. So on that note, I'm gonna add in my favorite primer of late, the Maybelline grippy serum, which I talked about in our summer episode. I'm just loving it.
B
That was also an Amazon episode. Episode. Yes.
A
Yes, that's right. But it's al. It's just like, so inexpensive, right? $12.99 US $16 in Canada for a grippy serum. And I. I think it might be superior to the other ones I've tried, in my humble opinion. So I'm going to. I'm going to go ahead. I'm going to go ahead and add that into our hall of Fame.
B
And if I recall, you liked that one because it was really smoothing for pores. Just really grippy, really long lasting.
A
It's super long lasting, but it also gives you like a glass. Yes. Effect. So again, you're getting that kind of really smooth, reflective look, but it's not greasy at all. And your makeup wears longer. And my foundation went on better and lasted longer. So it's just like, check mark, check mark, check mark. And then for that price, hall of Fame. Boom.
B
Now, one thing that we. I just skipped over with Urban Decay, and I do need to put this on the record, was that you predicted Urban Decay's pivot in a way, because you were recently talking about the only fan star who you're obsessed with. And I remember, I don't know what episode, but I only remember all of a sudden you're going, and she dates young gravy. I'm like, what is where Carlene is on a different rabbit hole of the Internet that I am not on. It's.
A
I know, it's so true. The algorithm has changed for me. But yes, I. Her name is Ari Kit Sia. It's K Y T S Y A. And yes, she's hilarious. And so Jill was talking about how only fans are just like the next influencers in general. But really what's happening is they're just on Instagram promoting their only fan site. Now, I'm not on Only Fans, but Ari has her own set of Instagram fans now, and they're mostly women and they just love, like, they're not there to watch her take her clothes off or anything like that. They're just There because they love her personality. She's really fun and funny, and she does really cute makeup looks. And people are, like, following her advice and, you know, what kind of boob job she got. And she's. She's really open and honest. She's like, there's nothing about me that's real. Nothing about me that's real. I will tell you right now. And then she's sharing all of her secrets. And there's another influencer I follow as well. And I was just like, you know what, Jill? This is its own. Like, first of all, I think they're going to be the next reality TV people. But they, like, these people are going to. Why don't they have their own house? Like, they're. They're going to. For sure. What I was going to say is that, like, these girls are going to start getting beauty contracts. Not from every brand, but certain brands are because they have. Have 2 million followers. So why wouldn't you. And sure enough, Ari showed up on Urban Decay's Instagram.
B
So she's the. Is she the face of the setting spray or just a face in general?
A
She's just a face in general.
B
It's a bold move from them, but they frankly really needed something like, like, not radical, but they needed something to really get people's attention because they were kind of like going away. They were losing their edge.
A
That's exactly right. And so I think it was a smart move for them, and people are rooting for Ari. I love her. I'd love to get her on the show. I think she's just so much fun.
B
Yeah, it just the flip side of that. Some people were commenting about how she's the number one pick me girl, and girls don't like pick me girls, no matter what. I think it was a brilliant move from Urban Decay because it gets people talking. We're talking about them. But does it move the needle in terms of sales? Yet to be determined.
A
I think at the end of the day, it will, because if she's promoting a product well, because she looks good doing whatever she's doing. And that's, you know, that. That's really what it's all about. It looks. It looks great on her. And if people drive with her, you.
B
Know, she's Canadian as well.
A
Is she not kind of entertainment? Yes, she is. Yeah. Originally Vancouver. From Vancouver. So that's our little prediction for what we're gonna. What we're gonna start seeing next. I think there's plenty of other super pretty girls who are just having so much Fun with this career that they've chosen, whether you agree with it or not. And they're being so open about how, like, the paychecks they're getting, which is like, you can say whatever you want about me, but I just bought this. This mansion.
B
Yeah, exactly. Anyways, I think she's hilarious and I. I'm into it and I think, why not get your bag from these brands?
A
Yeah, exactly. And I think we're going to be seeing a lot more of this, too. I think the. Is such a fascinating conversation in general because there are brands that are already. I don't know if they're gifting them or what, but, like, all these girls use Charlotte Tilbury, 24 7. Like, there's already brands that are being placed in what they're talking about, whether they like it or not. Mew Mew is like, did Mew Mew choose this? Because they're all wearing the Mew Mew tank tops and, like the little underwear and, and all that.
B
And I think what's brilliant about someone, like, she gets ahead of the trolls because she's very funny. It's like, no, no, I'll play you before you play me. And it'. It takes all of the air out of it and it's brilliant.
A
Yeah, absolutely. Well, that's the same like the other, the other gal that I follow, her name's Anna Maligon. I don't know how to pronounce that. It's M, A, L, Y, G, O, N. And she is, like, so pretty. And she's such a good, like, honestly, like, tick tock actor. She could be a real actor, and I'm sure she gets that all the time. But she could be a real model, too. Like, she looks. Looks like exactly like a model you'd see walking for Mew Mew, but she's making 10 times more money, 50 times more money, probably on only fans. So it's like she's just gonna do that instead. And her, she'll say it. She's like, I'm the Pick me girl does this. She makes fun of herself. And I think that's Little Bieber's doing it.
B
That's the whatever. We're in a culture of, like, attention seeking and getting and like, whatever breaks through the chaos and the noise on the Internet is what. What's winning? And it is. We're at a fever pitch for all of that stuff. So, yeah, sit back and do your thing and have your quiet feed on Instagram if you want, but if you want to get people's attention You've gotta, you gotta be out there flaunting it in whatever way.
A
