Jill Dunn
We're your hosts, Jill Dunn and Carlene Higgins. Welcome back to another episode of Breaking Beauty podcast. I'm one of your co hosts, Jill Dunn, and I'm here with Carlene Higgins. Hey, Carlene. Hi.
Carlene Higgins
Hi, Jill. How are you?
Jill Dunn
I'm doing pretty good, you know, ready for some good hair days this summer. But they're not going to be as good as yours. Like, very jealous.
Carlene Higgins
A you need not be jealous, Jill. I'll be thinking of you the whole time I'm in Italy.
Jill Dunn
Please don't. Just forget about work. Forget about microphones, forget about SD cards.
Mara Rosak
Right.
Jill Dunn
Forget about it all and let your. Let your hair down or not. Are you going to have like a silk scarf going on? Like overlooking the Mediterranean, eating gelato, sipping a spritz?
Carlene Higgins
Well, it is kind of the moment and actually it comes in handy because it's probably going to be about 100 degrees in Italy while I'm there. So I, I'll be bringing a wardrobe of silk scarves, I think.
Jill Dunn
Ooh, chic.
Carlene Higgins
If you don't know us by now, we're Carlene and Jill, two longtime magazine beauty editors turned beauty podcasters, delivering the breakthrough people, products and moments in beauty each and every Wednesday. Whether we're chatting about products that are worth the spend, interviewing famous faces like Victoria Beckham, or sharing the mic with beloved skin, makeup and hair pros who know all of the secret little tricks to help us level up our beauty games.
Jill Dunn
And this week we're calling on a hair guru with major, I'm talking major Hollywood glam cred. And that's Mara Rosak. Mara is probably best known as Emma Stone's hair stylist and found. Fun fact. Mara's actually done the hair for five different Oscar winning actresses on the night they won. Like her hairstyles are probably like in the Smithsonian or something. Like they've been recorded forever, which I think is really cool. She's worked with Emma Stone twice when she won her Oscar, Brie Larson when she won her Oscar, Michelle Yeoh when she won her Oscar, and Zoe Saldana, which was just this past season.
Carlene Higgins
Wow. So if these actresses are smart, they'll try and get in with her before the Oscars, you know, just, just cuz right. She's got the golden touch for real. And Mara actually launched her own line, a clean hair care brand in 2021 called Rose. It's spelled Roz. She started out with just One hair oil and it's now become an entire range. She has several skews. The shampoo is a new favorite of mine and as of earlier this year, the range is officially available in Sephora stores.
Jill Dunn
And she just launched a little travel kit. Everyone that I actually have been traveling with because it's really hard to get travel size hair products that are done by a stylist basically. So I'm really liking this little set. It's perfect. Got a packet for Italy. Carlene.
Carlene Higgins
Yes. I need this.
Jill Dunn
I really appreciate that Mara has this unique perspective because she's this Southern California native girl and she's got that effortless hair look on lock. She personally has a very cool look because she has this long, mermaid esque hair that's a really cool mix of textures. It's wavy, it's curly, it's straighter in some parts. It's very long, blonde. And I think she's mastered her own hair type and texture so she can really work with anyone.
Carlene Higgins
Yeah.
Jill Dunn
So this week we're asking Mara all about her tips and tricks to get your best summer hair days possible. I am taking notes.
Carlene Higgins
Yes. Everything from how to air dry for the best results so it doesn't turn out frizzy. How she advises her clients to manage bangs, her fresh spin on a ponytail this summer and how to ace a seriously slick style and make it elevated for summer 2025.
Jill Dunn
And Carlene, we got a sneak peek from Mara about a super cool collaboration she's doing with the American fashion brand called the Great. It's a very chic hair towel, everyone. And it's limited edition. And Carlene, I know you swear by this brand's pajamas, don't you?
Carlene Higgins
Yeah, I've talked about them so many times. The Great has these drop crotch pajamas that in the softest cotton. So they really are the most comfortable thing you can wear to bed. Listen, do I look hot in them? I'm gonna say probably not, but they are so comfy.
Jill Dunn
And so Mara is going to share the entire inspiration behind that and how she came up with that, that idea. And I always find, Carlene, that with hair stylists when we speak to them specifically, it's a really good one to watch on YouTube because they can't help themselves. They are like demoing with their hands what they would do, like pointing down a curling iron or how she would hold a brush or do the blowout or what have you or where you would place the ponytail. So go over and check us out on YouTube. It's Breaking Beauty Podcast and hit the little once you subscribe, also hit the little bell for turning on the notifications. And then you know when we have dropped an episode and we're getting more and more people finding us on YouTube and watching our episodes. So we are really grateful. And anything that Mara mentions today we have linked to it on our website, which is breaking beauty podcast.com we've got you there. So welcome Mara Rosak.

Today'S episode is brought to you in part by Nutrafol. So we've been talking all about summer hair today. The styles you can wear, the hacks you can use. But I know that it's a struggle for people who have thinning hair because I've been there. When I started going through perimenopause, I definitely noticed more gappiness at the front, especially when I try putting my hair in one of those cute, you know, summer buns at the top and it's just not fun. So that's when I started taking Nutrafol, the number one dermatologist largest recommended hair growth supplement brand that's trusted by over one and a half million people. It's been recommended so many times on our show and you can feel great about what you're putting into your body. Since Neutra Fall hair growth supplements are backed by peer reviewed studies and NSF content certified. That's the gold standard in third party certification for supplements. And what I appreciate is that a lot of supplements rely solely on ingredient studies. So you know, maybe they're purchasing these ingredients from manufacturers and they're relying on those studies. But neutral clinically tests the final formulations to make sure that there's efficacy. They're using a variety of hair measurement tools like hair counts and pull tests to assess the growth, the quality, the shedding, the texture. So I appreciate that they really know the final formula really works. You can see thicker, stronger, faster growing hair with less shedding in three to six months with Neutra Fall for a limited time, Neutr Fall is offering our listener dollars off your first month subscription and free shipping. We have a podcast. We're here to basically ask you to listen to it. We're just trying to help you guys not make the same mistakes that we made in life. We made a lot, especially me. I really went down some dark roads trying to save you guys from that. Our podcast is called the world's first podcast. We are technically the sisters behind the Nobody wants this podcast. It's inspired by us because you wrote it, so. Yeah, that's true. But when I write, I am inspired by myself all the time. Right? That would make sense. You inspire you. We're gonna wrap this up. Okay, guys, go check it out. World's first podcast.
Jill Dunn
Welcome to Breaking Beauty Podcast. Mara, thank you so much for being here.
Mara Rosak
Thank you so much for having me. I'm thrilled.
Jill Dunn
It's been a long time coming. I've loved your work for many years now, and the topic of the hour is all about getting your best summer hair yet. And I feel like you are the woman for this job. Love it. Because I understand you kind of mastered your own hair at, like, a very young age, like, coming of age. You were a budding hairstylist. Tell us everything.
Carlene Higgins
And I'm going to be rude and jump in before you answer, because for the listeners who are maybe not watching this on YouTube, we need to describe what you look like, Mara, because you've got beautiful waist length. I'm going to call it mermaid like hair. Okay. It's like blonde and it's dimensional and there's texture. There's some waves, but it's not like a consistent wave everywhere. It's very, like, beachy, just came out of the ocean kind of mermaid vibe. So with that.
Mara Rosak
Thank you.
Carlene Higgins
Take it away.
Mara Rosak
I will take it. I will take it. Oh, my gosh. So post puberty, maybe some of you remember, some of you are. It's in the foreseeable future, but hair changes and hormones right throughout our lives, hair change. But I had very different hair growing up. And all my friends seemed to have this, like, very effortless. They'd get out of the, like, pool parties when we were 13 and just come out with this perfect hair. And I remember being introduced to this very different texture, quite frizzy curls that were just. It was a complete 180 from what I had growing up, and nobody in my family was a hairstylist or knew the first thing about it.
Jill Dunn
Yeah.
Mara Rosak
But my mom always used to do her own hair, and so I think I saw, like, oh, I could take this into my own hands. She would color her hair, which I don't necessarily recommend, but she would do it herself. And so I thought, okay, I'm gonna master this, because, you know, I'm a teenager, and I want to look like my friends look. And it was. I'm dating myself now, but it's like the 90s, and it was all about this very sleek, straight hair, and it just wasn't what I had, so. And the only thing on the market at the time was frizzies. Right. And so I loaded myself up with some frizzies and worked with my Mom's probably in 1978 blow dryer and got to work.
Carlene Higgins
Yeah.
Mara Rosak
And it took some time, but I mastered it and then became obsessed.
Carlene Higgins
Yeah.
Jill Dunn
And then you did all your friends hair. Yeah, I heard, like, for their bar mitzvahs and stuff.
Mara Rosak
Bar mitzvah every prom. Yes.
Jill Dunn
So what was the secret at the time? It was like, mastering how to work with your texture. Or were you, like, fighting it? Were you, like.
Mara Rosak
I was fighting it at the time. I was really focused on trend and looking a certain way, and I think that's probably a huge part of why I'm in the seat today and really talking about working with your texture, because now I work with my texture and have fur. But at the time, in some ways, I'm glad I had this challenge because I think it taught me so much about hair. But now I don't want women to struggle in the way that I did. I really believe in more of the acceptance, and I think we're just living in a different time where we are more educated and also are embracing these natural textures and the differences more than ever.
Carlene Higgins
Yeah. Well, we're going to get into all of your best tips for doing that, but just before we do, I want to ask you if you have a prediction for summer 2025. Is there a hairstyle or a cut that you think we're going to see everywhere?
Mara Rosak
I do think beach waves really are back. Not that they ever left California, but I saw, like, ghost waves, and I think it's a little bit more even of the, like, natural aesthetic, a little more wild. And so I do think that we're gonna see maybe some More layers and lightness to hair in general. Like the light effortlessness of hair.
Carlene Higgins
Okay.
Mara Rosak
Yeah. So some shorter layers.
Jill Dunn
Okay. What's some characteristics of a current beach wave? If you're. What is a ghost wave?
Mara Rosak
A ghost wave. So it's really that airiness. It's really about the imperfection. It's about more of the natural texture. Using products that are light and that are gonna enhance that effortlessness and natural texture versus something that I think we have been seeing, which is a little bit more manufactured, it's a little bit more perfected. This is more of, like, the messiness of it. And it was different from the big barrels that we also had been seeing. So I can see where we were headed. But I'm gonna go with. It's going to be.
Carlene Higgins
Yeah.
Mara Rosak
Natural.
Jill Dunn
Yeah.
Carlene Higgins
Well, your hair is very unique, I will say, just looking at here, because it is different textures. And I think that's the thing that a lot of people don't realize. I have this myself.
Jill Dunn
I think everybody does.
Carlene Higgins
Right. Like, I have waves at the back.
Mara Rosak
Yes.
Carlene Higgins
Especially right at the back. But my sides are pretty straight.
Mara Rosak
Yes.
Carlene Higgins
Then it's like, well, I don't really know how to go with my texture, because what is it like, how do I make it all match? But yours is like you're rocking your texture wherever it is, and it's very cool. It's like a different way of dimensional.
Mara Rosak
Right. You know, I agree, and I like that. And it took me a long time to really accept that.
Jill Dunn
Right.
Mara Rosak
Because it is different. But I do think that there are some things you can do to have it look a little bit more uniform or, like, texturize the front to have it match the back a little bit more, but without having to work.
Carlene Higgins
Make it all match exactly, exactly, exactly. Okay. This is so cool. I can't wait to get into this.
Jill Dunn
What I love about your products and many of her styling products in Rose are, like, kind of geared toward air drying. And I think that that's very unique and very different from the frizz ease days where it was all about, like, put it all down, lay it all down, add the heat, and you're locking it in. I noticed this is, like, a trending category. We're seeing more products for air drying. So how do you personally use them? And why do you think this is like, having a moment? Air dry product, textures.
Mara Rosak
Yeah. I think we all live such busy lives.
Jill Dunn
Yeah.
Mara Rosak
And I think more and more. Right. Even as we age, it's like, you're going to tell me that I need to spend an hour on my hair. I'm sorry, I don't have that time. But I've also seen how really good products really transform people's hair, and it makes it so much easier. And I don't think that's obvious. Right. I think hair has been a confusing category. I think we've been marketed to in very specific ways. That really hasn't changed in life since, you know, our grandparents, great grandparents era. Like, there's been, you know, little innovation in terms of how we're spoken to. And I've really wanted to flip that on its head one, because I think hairdressers in general have a very different, very unique perspective.
Jill Dunn
Yeah.
Mara Rosak
And it's that products, when they're really good, should work across multiple textures. People don't really know what type of hair they necessarily have. Sort of similar to skin. You're like, it's combination. Sometimes they break out, but sometimes it's oily. And if I'm traveling, I'm dry. And so I think it's similar to hair. But we all know where we want to go. We all know the results we're looking for.
Jill Dunn
Right.
Mara Rosak
And so I'm more formulating products that work across the board, across multiple textures to get the results. And we talk a lot about results with Rose.
Carlene Higgins
Right.
Mara Rosak
And so going back to air dry, I think when you have good products that really work, you should be able to wear your texture and air dry your hair. But that looks different for different people.
Jill Dunn
Yeah.
Mara Rosak
And so smoothing products are the products I go to because I need to define. I need to defriz. But someone else might want to enhance. Still have definition, but they need to enhance to get the air dry that they want. And so those are two different types of products.
Jill Dunn
Yeah.
Mara Rosak
Both we have at Rose.
Carlene Higgins
Yeah.
Jill Dunn
What's the one that you love to use on your hair?
Carlene Higgins
And what is yours? Like two. A curl. Like, how would you describe. Do you know?
Mara Rosak
Yeah. You know, it's funny. It's like, I think that came into the conversation later. I've been doing hair for 22 years, and I think it's a real helpful, educational tool. But, yeah, we're all. Texture is texture, and we're all on this spectrum. Right. From, you know, very fine straight to very, very coarse. Thicker textures on this spectrum, I would say I fall somewhere probably in the middle. I'm obviously not the curliest, but by no means the straightest. Yeah, correct for me. I have a. I have a lot of hair, but it can get very frizzy, very dry. I also Bleach it. Right. There's all these things that are just adding to the. The coarseness. Right. And so for me, the milk hair serum, which probably is our most. It's our bestseller and it's the most versatile product that really every single hair type can use. Okay. Every single hair type.
Carlene Higgins
And I rarely hear that.
Mara Rosak
And I mean that it is so lightweight. It has hyaluronic acid in it. I actually make it in Italy at a skincare lab. They predominantly make skincare because we all need hydration for the most part with our hair too. And it's not something that's as educated. Right. I think we think moisture will wear hair down, but it doesn't have to. But we all really need it, right? I mean, our hair is dead and we do all this stuff to it between heat and color. And so you need a lightweight hydration daily and you don't have to wash your hair, but you can just put this on like you would a daily moisturizer before your hair. And that product won't weigh fine hair down, but it actually does add some nice de frizzing and smoothing and definition for the curliest of coarse hair as well. So that's the product I'm using predominantly.
Carlene Higgins
On damp hair, on dry hair.
Mara Rosak
Both. Both. So I use it out of the shower. I use it out of the shower as a detangler. That's what I do before I do anything. And then I use it during the drying process and definitely more when my hair is dry.
Carlene Higgins
Okay.
Mara Rosak
Yeah. And then as a stylist, I actually put it in before I go to cut someone's hair because it really helps with that combability for my pros listening. It's a beautiful, like cutting lotion. And then it's already in your hair before you go to style it. And it also offers heat protection up to 450 degrees. So if you're a flat ironing gal, you know, it's great for a great prep and then a great finisher.
Carlene Higgins
Now, are there any other secrets to air drying your hair the right way?
Mara Rosak
Yes, I would say so. I think key is how it starts in the shower. You really want to make sure that you're removing buildup thoroughly and using a hydrating cleanser. Sorry, cleanser and conditioner. So I think that's really important. And then when you get out of the shower, prepping with some kind of a detangler and then brush your hair when it's very wet and that's it. I don't want you to really brush it or comb it again. You want to try and keep the integrity of the natural texture, whatever that is, as much as possible. And when you comb it, once it starts to dry, you can see you're starting to frizz it up. Actually, it's starting to, like, it's gonna change the integrity of that natural texture, and then it's all about. Which we can get to. But it's really about the towel you're using to use. Yeah.
Jill Dunn
I was gonna ask you that.
Mara Rosak
You don't want too much weight on your hair. You just don't want anything pulling it down. It's really about enhancing what is naturally there. So the towel. We have a fun collab coming out.
Jill Dunn
Ooh.
Mara Rosak
It's kind of a funny story, but I am a big fan of this beautiful casual wear brand. They're very popular here in California. Here, it's called the Great.
Jill Dunn
Oh, yeah.
Carlene Higgins
Oh, yeah. Love the Great.
Mara Rosak
Love the Great. Love. Emily and Merit, the founders. I've known them because they were fashion stylists, and we used to be on set together. Yeah. And then they developed current Elliott jeans, which were the best. And then they now have the great. And they make the best, the greatest sweatshirts.
Carlene Higgins
Yeah.
Mara Rosak
So I am in the shower, and I had my great sweatshirt on, but I got out of the shower and completely forgot I had no towel in the bathroom.
Carlene Higgins
And what happens when you have a newborn baby?
Mara Rosak
You're like, oops, no towel, no towel, no towel. But I have a sweatshirt.
Carlene Higgins
Yeah.
Mara Rosak
And it's that very thin material. If you know the great. You know this. It's very thin, very high quality. And so I just grab my towel and I dry off my body, like, the tiniest bit and throw my hair up, because I don't want my hair now sopping.
Jill Dunn
Right.
Mara Rosak
As you mentioned, it's very long, getting the whole floor wet and whatever. So I throw my hair up in this sweats sweatshirt.
Jill Dunn
Yes.
Mara Rosak
And then when I go to take my hair out of the sweatshirt, my hair is perfect. Like, it's got the texture in the front, has now seemingly developed more of what it is in the back. Right. Like this soft kind of bend.
Carlene Higgins
Right.
Mara Rosak
And all I needed to do was scrunch my product into the hair and go. And I didn't touch it again. And I had the best hair day. And so I immediately reached out to the gals.
Carlene Higgins
Yeah.
Mara Rosak
And I was like, have you guys. Would you do this?
Jill Dunn
Yeah.
Mara Rosak
Could we do a rose? The great hair towel. And so we worked to develop the perfect size, just every single detail. And it Actually looks like a sweatshirt. It has the ribbing. It has.
Carlene Higgins
Oh, that's so cute.
Mara Rosak
You know the band in the back that you, you know, wrap the twist part into, and it's just the perf. Perfect.
Carlene Higgins
And then more, it's giving, like, sock buns energy. You know what I mean?
Mara Rosak
Yes. And most importantly, it's the perfect weight for your hair.
Jill Dunn
So is it terry material or what kind of material exactly?
Mara Rosak
Like their sweatshirts, where it's that smooth cotton. 100 cotton. Smooth cotton on the. On the front, and then the terry.
Jill Dunn
Like a French terry?
Mara Rosak
Like the French terry on the inside.
Jill Dunn
That sounds great.
Mara Rosak
It's so great.
Jill Dunn
As it were. Great.
Carlene Higgins
I love a good color.
Jill Dunn
As you were talking about that, all I was thinking about was when Forrest Gump, like, uses the T shirt shirt, and then he accidentally creates the happy face. Yeah.
Mara Rosak
Oh, my God. I need to go back and watch that immediately.
Jill Dunn
The mother of all invention, right? Necessity.
Mara Rosak
You never know when these genius moments hit.
Carlene Higgins
Amazing.
Mara Rosak
Yeah.
Carlene Higgins
Okay, I want to go back before. Before we move on and just finish this conversation about this newer take on a beach wave where you might have uneven texture. But you had mentioned how. Well, you don't just leave it, though. You're gonna add some cohesiveness. You might have straighter sides and a wavy back, but you're not using, like, a curling iron all over. So what do you do? Let's just get that.
Mara Rosak
Yes. So it's pretty simple. I'm a big fan of braids.
Carlene Higgins
Okay.
Mara Rosak
I think it's just key in terms of when you go to braid your hair, so you don't want it to be sopping, sopping wet. And then when you take out the braids, you don't want your hair to be thoroughly dried either.
Carlene Higgins
Okay.
Mara Rosak
Because you want it to still be dry enough to where it has some hold. Right. So you put your products in before you go to braid, and this is after you've towel dried. You're not sopping wet. The perfect time you add those braids, you could do one on each side or two. And maybe it's that you need to do the front pieces. Right. In our case, where we have a little bit more of the straighter in the front, you're kind of braiding the front pieces and incorporating some of that top back into that braid. Right. So maybe you're thinking about it, like, from the tips of your eyebrows, if you're kind of going in a horizontal direction. This sounds complicated, but follow me here. Braid that section so you're almost creating, like, a half Half braid on the top and then do the same with underneath. Right. And then remove the braids when they're probably about 80% to 90% dry, just a little bit damp.
Carlene Higgins
Go do all your household chores.
Mara Rosak
That's right. Yeah, that's exactly right. And then you can take your milk care serum. I even have some clients that will put, you know, I love those Mr. Spray bottles. You can get these on anywhere. Beauty supplies, Amazon, and putting water and even like a little bit of the milk hair serum or our foundation mask and shaking it up and using that to also kind of like re. Dampen something.
Carlene Higgins
Okay.
Mara Rosak
So outside of braids, I have another wreck which is a little bit hard too, if you're not watching me to sort of describe. But it's essentially taking that front section, everything in front of the ear, and wrapping it around the rest of the hair. Pigtails.
Jill Dunn
Right. So you're basically using your hair as if it was a heatless roller. The rest of your hair.
Mara Rosak
That's exactly right. Because really you want that bend right in front of the face, especially if you have some texture throughout. And really that will help. And then let it dry like that. You're going to pin the ends and you literally have this swirl of that front section over the rest of that, you know, half hair pigtail.
Jill Dunn
Yeah.
Mara Rosak
And that really helps set the hair in a beautiful shape. And so it is. It takes a little bit of manipulation, but with the right products and the right kind of timing in terms of wet to dry, it helps so much.
Carlene Higgins
Yeah, no, that's true. The hairstylists always have those great clips, and you'll see models backstage. And I just. I never think to do that, but it's the tiniest, like, way of just creating, like, a bit of bend around your hairline or something like that that you can do while you're just doing other things.
Mara Rosak
They're the best.
Carlene Higgins
Yeah.
Mara Rosak
And I have my favorites. Favorites. Favorites ever. They're Japanese, of course, and they're these. I love the flat clips, but then I also love these little tiny, very lightweight silver clips that sort of have it. They're tiny and they have a little point. And those are great for, like, very specific directional or pin curl anything. They're like my hairdresser essential. But they're great. People at home do.
Carlene Higgins
Yeah.
Jill Dunn
Do you know the name of them?
Mara Rosak
You know, I thought they were YS Park. I have to. I'll send it to you.
Jill Dunn
Okay.
Mara Rosak
But they're amazing. And I actually get them at this place called Shear World, and they have their own Website.
Jill Dunn
Oh, Online.
Carlene Higgins
Okay. Do you use those on Emma Stone with her little.
Mara Rosak
Yes.
Carlene Higgins
Curly cues?
Mara Rosak
Sure do.
Carlene Higgins
On her pixie?
Mara Rosak
Sure do.
Carlene Higgins
I feel like that would be. Yeah.
Mara Rosak
Yep. Use them for that finger weave look that we did at the Oscars.
Carlene Higgins
Okay.
Jill Dunn
Incredible.
Mara Rosak
Yeah. Those are my go to. Yep. And then, and then I would say our air thickening spray, which is this product. I think people are like, how do I use this? And what's it really for? Hairdressers that I know that are using rose, we call them our pros. They are using air thickening spray. A lot of times if your hair is now in that braid and you want to add a little bit of hold to that when you go to take it out.
Carlene Higgins
Yeah.
Mara Rosak
And then post to scrunch it up and break it apart. Our ear thickening spray is so great for that because it has a very lightweight grip. It's not as like intense and dry as like a salt spray. Right. It's just such a nice airy product, which is why it's called air thickening spray. And you can spray that in throughout to really like break up those waves and give it some hold.
Carlene Higgins
Okay. Awesome.
Jill Dunn
Purador is one of our show partners this week. So I love a sleeper hit beauty brand and Purador is definitely one of those that needs to be on your radar. This brand is a huge hit on Amazon, everyone. But it was new to me and what I like about this brand so much is that all of their offerings are organic, from hair to skin solutions, but they are affordable and so everybody can get in on these quality products. In particular, I love their offering of skincare oils. They have a rosehip oil which is gorgeous. They also have a vitamin E oil that's really good for skin barrier repair. And all of their oils are 100 pure. They're cold pressed. There's no fillers, no additives. They're sustainably sourced, cruelty free. They're made in the USA and they're suitable for all skin types. It's really that multi purpose beauty solution. In fact, the Purador castor oil, I've actually seen Hailey Bieber use that in one of her Get Ready with Me videos. She was using it in in her hair. And then I think in a subsequent video she was using it on her brows as well. And these products are so affordable. A lot of them are around $20 or less, which is incredible. And another fan favorite is the aloe vera based shampoo and conditioner. It's sulfate free, it's paraben free. There's no synthetic fragrances, no colorants, no chemicals. It's gluten free and hypoallergenic. So if you would like to try purador yourself, we have an exclusive promo. Don't wait. Strengthen your skin from within to purador.com pages beauty for 15% off. Now that's P R.com pages beauty for 15% OFF. Now we'll link to this offer in our show notes and on our website. Now back to the show. What if you want the waves but you're not necessarily going to air dry? What's your tools?
Mara Rosak
Yes.
Jill Dunn
What is your favorite hot tool of the moment?
Mara Rosak
My favorite hot tool of the moment. I. I love ghd curling irons. I also love t3 curling iron.
Jill Dunn
Yeah.
Mara Rosak
I just think they give. They get really nice and hot, but you can control the level. And sometimes too hot actually does the opposite effect. It'll just make your hair fall flat. How come certain textures just can't. They don't hold. And it's almost like the overheated. When you go to pull out the curl, it's just like it's too hot. It almost added a weight to it.
Jill Dunn
It falls. Yeah.
Mara Rosak
Yes. So I usually like to keep. If it's a tool that has dial for heat, I'll usually do it somewhere on the middle to high.
Jill Dunn
Yeah.
Mara Rosak
But not as high as they go.
Jill Dunn
Okay.
Mara Rosak
Often.
Jill Dunn
Often. Okay.
Mara Rosak
But GHD is regulated and they just have the one setting and they're so good and I love them. Yeah. So big, big fan.
Jill Dunn
Big fan. What's the modern way to like do the wave with the curling iron?
Mara Rosak
Yeah.
Jill Dunn
Tell me.
Mara Rosak
Yeah, I.
Jill Dunn
You can demo.
Mara Rosak
Yeah. I usually never use the, the actual clamp part. I like to keep it open and so I'll keep it open that whole time. Or back in the day. I don't think I do it anymore. But I would just like take them off my.
Jill Dunn
Oh, really?
Mara Rosak
Yes. Because I'm like, I just want the barrel part. But you can totally hold it open. And I get my elbow up. So the elbow is pointing to the sky. And I have the, the curling iron angled down vertically.
Jill Dunn
Yeah.
Mara Rosak
And I just like to wrap the hair around it, let it twist around it and. And not right on top of each other. Right. You kind of want the hair coming down the whole barrel. And then I just hold the ends. I hold the ends out and the ends out, you know, is kind of the old trick, but to get that beach wave.
Carlene Higgins
Yeah.
Jill Dunn
And what about the dismount? How do you take the hair off the thing?
Mara Rosak
Oh, the Hair off.
Jill Dunn
Yeah. Are you, are you just letting it fall out? What are you doing?
Mara Rosak
I am, yes. Or pulling Because I have the ends grip.
Jill Dunn
Yeah.
Mara Rosak
And then I just pull it straight off.
Jill Dunn
I always find though, because I do have long hair, it doesn't fit like the whole barrel.
Carlene Higgins
So extra long.
Jill Dunn
Now you do end up up kind of putting the hair on top of the hair sometimes.
Mara Rosak
That's fine.
Jill Dunn
Yeah.
Carlene Higgins
Came out with extra long, didn't they?
Jill Dunn
I don't know.
Carlene Higgins
I'm pretty sure they came out with an extra long.
Mara Rosak
I feel like I've seen some. Good question. Yeah, I don't think I have it in my kit though. I think also to give a little. I. I do like they have an.
Carlene Higgins
Extra long barrel justified. It's the T3 single pass extra long.
Mara Rosak
Oh, I love T3.
Carlene Higgins
Now what about curly haired girls? You know, they're down Reddit rabbit holes. They're like, what the heck are the curly haired girl to manage their summer hair. So let's get it from the pro.
Mara Rosak
Yes, you really again, curly hair. And the curlier your hair is, the more hydration it needs. And see, really products are so key here. You want to use heavier masks actually in the summertime.
Jill Dunn
Okay.
Mara Rosak
And you want to use maybe thicker oils. You want products that are really going to be hydrating for you because that's going to help so much with frizz. It's going to help so much with defining your curls. Curls drink it up. That's what they want. And then you can use a product that has like a thicker hold. You know, I love curl creams that have a bit of hold, but again, they're going to be very moisturizing and hydrating, which is again great for frizz, especially if you're in humid climates or you're going swimming. And the salt water, which is really drying, really want to make sure that you're protecting it and hydrating your hair.
Jill Dunn
What are your tips and tricks for curly girls? Like, talk to me about how you're layering as a pro. These oils cream like because it can get to be a mess.
Mara Rosak
Yes, you're so right.
Jill Dunn
And like the just the cocktailing, I feel like that's the artist's eye. Like you, you just know it. Give us the pro what you actually are doing on curly hair.
Mara Rosak
So I like to seal everything with like, you don't want to put too thick of an oil on first. Right. You kind of want to lock that in. And so I usually will use like our Santa Lucia first. It's very, very Lightweight. It is an oil, but it's a protective oil, but it's very light. So again, works across multiple textures. But if we're specifically talking about curls, it's great for your hair when it's wet. And then you add your milk hair serum on top.
Jill Dunn
Okay.
Mara Rosak
And then I would.
Jill Dunn
So how much oil?
Mara Rosak
Okay. It depends, I would say, on how much hair you have. But again, curls absorb it. Curls can take it. So I use at least two pumps, and I'll probably, on my hair, even go up to four.
Jill Dunn
Wow.
Mara Rosak
Because my hair just soaks it up. And then. Same with milk hair serum. And I actually can even combine the two in my hands. They mix beautifully together. So I'd say the curlier your hair is, the drier it is, the more you could kind of cocktail and use those two products in combo. They blend beautifully together, and the oil will add even a little bit more of that shine and definition to the milk. That's really light, but it's creamy, so it's giving a little bit of that. I don't want to say weight, because it is very weightless, but you can almost imagine, right. Like, mixing a moisturizer with a little bit of, like, an oil for your skin. It just adds more of that. Of that hydration. Yeah, right.
Carlene Higgins
Yeah.
Mara Rosak
So I do those in combination, and then when the hair is dry, I'll add the willow glen on top to kind of like. Like, seal it all in.
Carlene Higgins
Okay.
Mara Rosak
And that's before I go into, you know, the beach.
Jill Dunn
Okay. I love the vibe of so many of Emma Stone's looks that you do, and her current look is so good. It's like this pixie. Right. That she's rocking now a lot. A lot of people may not go for the full Pixie cut, but you kind of also. She had it, like, with, like, little bangs as well. So maybe you could, like, inspire us, like, managing bangs in the summer. Because I feel like that's a whole other. It's a whole other consideration in the summertime.
Mara Rosak
Yeah, absolutely. If you're someone who's willing or has thought about chopping her hair, maybe you have a bob. Yeah. And you're like, maybe I should go for it. I understand. It is so bold, and I don't have the guts to do it, but I think I'm so proud of her for doing it, and it's so gorgeous, and I actually do think that it inspired some Pixies, which is very cool because I think it's. It's such a liberating experience, and I actually Think.
Jill Dunn
I think that is very true. I think when you see a celebrity make a big, bold swing like that, people are taking that to their stylist.
Mara Rosak
I think so too. I got a lot of inbound, but I think. And then in terms of bangs, I mean, I love bangs. I love those kind of more 70s, like Jane Birkin bangs. I'm not the biggest fan. I just think they're harder to pull off. I'm sure they'll come back around a la Devil Wears Prada. Right. But the really heavy blunt bang, I just think they can be hard and heavy. I also love seeing some eyebrow. I love eyebrows. I think they make a face a lot of the time. And so I tend to like to do a longer bang that's maybe swinging. And then you can bring some sort of shorter pieces down in the center. Again, everything sort of in between the two arches of the eyebrows. I don't ever want to cut a bang that's too wide. That's where you get into some trouble.
Carlene Higgins
Right.
Mara Rosak
Because then you're having to grow out the sides. I think they're really beautiful and sexy when it's. Everything short is essentially in between the arches of the eyebrow and then it can like wing out from there, but keeping the shortest pieces in between the eyebrows and then ever so slightly longer as you get to those sort of arches.
Jill Dunn
Do you have a tip for keeping them from being greasy? Like, what's your go to for?
Mara Rosak
Yeah, I think dry shampoo is obviously going to be your best friend. Great question. I love the, like, old school chlorine one.
Jill Dunn
We need to know about your best clean girl aesthetic wet bun look. You did this for Zoe Saldana at the SAG Awards, and it was absolutely stunning. How did you get it so perfect? Tell us in. Tell us all your. Your secrets.
Carlene Higgins
And I think especially for. For as we're talking about more textured hair because I feel like we've gotten that lesson on how to do it and stick. But yeah, highly textured hair.
Mara Rosak
Yeah. Again, I use oils. That's why I think my first products ever made were oil. I'm just a big fan of oils for texture. And so the Willow Glenn oil, I like to use like a thicker oil for any wet look on any type of hair because the oil stays wet looking versus, like gels that can dry more matte. And then they're also very hard and dry a little bit stiff. And so then you can't work them into something. And so I use oils and I used our Willow Glenn treatment oil to get that wet Looking shine.
Jill Dunn
What do you do? You start in the back. Where do you start?
Mara Rosak
Yeah, so you want to straighten the hair first, then I use oils for that. And then I will pull it all back and use like a style cream to like really slick it back first along with then an oil on top.
Jill Dunn
Yeah. So you gotta make sure you're committing to this look.
Mara Rosak
You're committing before. Oh, yeah.
Jill Dunn
Have you ever had it where someone wants to go for a wet, slick back look and then they're like, actually.
Mara Rosak
No, because I prepped that. I'm like, yeah, no, I like instantly.
Jill Dunn
There's no coming back. Yes.
Mara Rosak
I'm like instantly instill the fear of God into the style. I'm like, do not change your mind here. We're ready. And even on an editorial shoot, I'm like, let's save that wet look for last because there is no going back unless I want to shampoo this product out. If you're gonna put an oil on dry hair, expect it to be wet looking. And so you load it up to get that wet look.
Jill Dunn
Yeah. Like triple the amount of product. Like how much you're just going for it.
Mara Rosak
You're going for it.
Jill Dunn
Yeah.
Mara Rosak
Okay. You can start with less. I always recommend that and add more as you go. But. Oh yeah.
Jill Dunn
What. And what do you use to really smooth for a textured type of hair afterwards? Like, do you have a special brush comb like to really refine.
Mara Rosak
Yeah.
Jill Dunn
The look?
Mara Rosak
What's your fav. I mean, I really love using my fingertips. I think I just generally like to touch hair. And so I'll either spray product on my fingertip or I'll use. We just came out with this year, an evergreen style cream.
Jill Dunn
Okay.
Mara Rosak
It's an amazing. It's the product that I've really been using on like Emma's pixie, any men's cut, any short haired style. And. And then especially on taming flyaways.
Jill Dunn
Okay.
Mara Rosak
And so I'll just put even a little dab of that on my fingertip and just run it over the top of the hair over the sides to really tame the flyaways. And then you can spray a hairspray to finish it for a red carpet.
Jill Dunn
Okay.
Carlene Higgins
You mentioned that you're traveling around all the time. Do you ever need to pick up something from the drugstore? And what would it be for hair?
Mara Rosak
Oh my gosh, that's a great one. I mean, I love drugstore Elnet. Hairspray is a, is a classic. I don't like again the, the aerosol aspect of the. Butanes and whatnot. But I think to get the job done, I really do hold the test of time. It holds the test of time.
Carlene Higgins
Yeah.
Mara Rosak
Yeah.
Carlene Higgins
Now with Rose, your own line, I have to tell you, I tried the shampoo and conditioner, and it was so unique, and I didn't expect that. And the reason is because I've tried. We've been doing this for 20 years, and I've tried a lot of. Of product lines, and especially with the shampoo and conditioner, it's really hard to have a different experience when you're in the shower. But I thought. So I was using. Do you just have the one shampoo and conditioner?
Mara Rosak
Yes.
Carlene Higgins
Yeah. What's it called?
Mara Rosak
Foundation.
Carlene Higgins
Foundation, yes. And it is a very unique texture. It kind of feels, if I'm remembering this correctly, it's almost like a. Like a jelly serum oil or something. But it's like. Like it does lather up, and it's just. It feels different. It feels like a kind of skincare experience or something. And I loved the result. Like, I really felt like it was so clean, but I also had, like, more volume but a softness as well. Like, really, I'm just speaking instead of you here. But what. What makes it so unique?
Mara Rosak
You nailed it. I couldn't have said it better. And thank you. I'm so excited and I'm so happy.
Carlene Higgins
I really love it.
Mara Rosak
Experience. Because obviously you've tried everything.
Carlene Higgins
Yeah. And I use the milk serum, too, so together, it was great. But I did. I was like, oh, this is a different shampoo and conditioner experience.
Mara Rosak
Yes. I. The. The gel that you speak to. I really wanted to have more of that gel. Like, and it's not like a, you know, I guess, like how you would imagine. Like, it doesn't feel gelatin. Like.
Carlene Higgins
I know that's cream. Yeah.
Mara Rosak
Yeah, right? Not creamy. I really wanted that because I don't want. And I don't think any shampoo should ever leave any residual anything on your hair. We all want. And the reason why we only have one shampoo and conditioner. Maybe I'll introduce one other one down the road, but for the most part, we are really all across the board looking for the same thing. Out of a shampoo and conditioner, you want it to thoroughly cleanse but not strip your hair. Remove all the buildup. Buildup is, I would say, a key thing that I see on clients hair. And when they're struggling with their hair, it's often like, okay, I'm gonna take you and wash your hair like, four times. At the back bar.
Carlene Higgins
Yeah.
Mara Rosak
And once I give your trim up and style your hair, it's gonna be like a new head of hair, because that weight at the root, people don't even really realize. And then you get it more wet and then it just gets kind of like thicker and stickier and heavier at the root and then dry ends, It's a big issue. And I think it's hard for people to identify that that's even what's going on. But you. So every time you go to wash your hair, I want it to be thoroughly removed, removing any buildup. And that is what our foundation shampoo does. But to your point, it leaves the hair also feeling quite hydrated because you don't then want to go in with a conditioner that then has to like redo all this work that, you know, with a heavy conditioner that your shampoo just stripped out. So you want them to work synergistically. And so we use coconut based surfactants for our shampoo and peptides and ceramides, which we have in both the shampoo and conditioner. And then a proprietary complex that's a blend of botanicals that we have in our milk shampoo conditioner and our mask. It's not in every product, but it is in those that really helps to preserve your color and protect your hair and hydrate it. And then our conditioner is nice. I would say it's a little bit more. It's on the thicker side, but it's not. Not heavy.
Carlene Higgins
Yeah.
Mara Rosak
It has no silicone and so it's actually working to hydrate, but it rinses out beautifully and leaves your hair really feeling. And again, I have more texture, as do you. And in terms of like the coarseness or frizz and it really works there. I haven't met a person that it hasn't worked for and that was really my goal because I don't. I think again, in this climate where people are buying less but more quality, I think that. But I didn't want it to be confusing. And it's like you really just. The whole family can use this one shampoo and conditioner and it really works. Yeah.
Jill Dunn
I tried the serum, the milky.
Mara Rosak
Well, we have them all here for you.
Jill Dunn
Yeah, there's minis coming out now. So you. I don't know if we said it on the mic, but you have a newborn.
Mara Rosak
Yeah.
Jill Dunn
How old?
Mara Rosak
Three months.
Jill Dunn
Three months in a week?
Mara Rosak
Yeah.
Jill Dunn
Incredible. So what are you doing for the summer of Mara's for your family? What are you looking forward to? The most this summer.
Mara Rosak
Yes. Well, I do have some more fun travel, but predominantly for work.
Jill Dunn
Okay.
Mara Rosak
This summer. So we have. Which would have just done, you know, Cannes Film Festival and then other film festivals coming up. Venice film festivals coming up. So lots of travel for. For work. And I'll probably schlep that baby around a bit and then hopefully some family time and travel as well. Although when I'm home, I just. Just kind of love to be home.
Jill Dunn
But are you. Are you in the salon still as well?
Mara Rosak
Right. So I have my salon, which is just down the street from where we are right now. It's been there 10 years, which is crazy. 10 years. This year I haven't been going as often, although I love to cut hair. I would say between business, baby travel, for celebrity work, it's challenging to fit in. And so I sent a lot of my clients to other stylists that are at our salon.
Carlene Higgins
Got it.
Mara Rosak
I've had assistants who have been on the floor now for years, you know, old assistants. And I love to also support their careers and make sure that people feel. And then my clients feel safe with them because they've known them too, so. But I do plan to when the baby gets a little bit older and I have a little more time to go back and spend a little bit more time because I just. I love cutting hair.
Jill Dunn
So fun.
Mara Rosak
I love it.
Jill Dunn
Yeah. That's great. Well, we really appreciate your time. Thank you so much. It was great to meet you and can't wait to see what you're turning over. Met Gala film festivals. Thank you. And we need that hair towel. No pressure, but I do need it.
Mara Rosak
It's. It's coming for you.
Jill Dunn
Cannot wait so much.
Mara Rosak
I can't wait.
Carlene Higgins
