mobile.com welcome to Last Week on Broadway for Monday, July 6, 2026. I'm Broadway Radio's Matt Tamnini and back from my west coast sojourn to catch you up on all of the news that we missed since the last time that we had an episode come out. There was a ton of really exciting things that happened pretty much the first week that I was gone, but because of the Fourth of July holiday coming last week, there wasn't a ton that came out last week. So some of this might be old news to you, but I did want to make sure that we got it out there on the podcast feed one way or another. So let's start over at the Lunt Fontanne Theater where we found out that Lin Manuel Miranda and Issa Davis new musical warriors will officially open on Broadway this coming spring. Previews will begin in March with an April opening. The show will be directed by Jenny Koons and co directed and choreographed by Andy Blankenbuehler, obviously a stalwart of every Lin Manuel Miranda Broadway musical, including Bring it on the Musical, which Andy both directed and choreographed. Interestingly enough, Thomas Kael is not part of the creative team for the show, but he is listed as the lead producer along with Lin Manuel Miranda. His Father Luis Miranda, and Jeffrey Seller, who has done both in the Heights and Hamilton. So it is very interesting to see how Tommy, even though not helming the production, will be an integral part of its development. At this point, we don't know either the exact dates or the cast, but I would imagine that a lot of the Broadway names that were part of the concept album that was released in 2024 will be featured in it. I would doubt that some of the bigger music names like Lauryn Hill, Nas, Busta Rhymes, Marc Anthony, rza, Ghostface Killer, people like that, I would doubt that they would be in the Broadway production, especially because they had smaller roles. But folks like Anissa Folds, Amber Gray, Sasha Hutchins, Giselle Jimenez, Jasmine Cephas Jones, Kenita R. Miller, Philip Asu, Julia Harriman, all of those types of people who that was the core group of the warriors in the concept album. I would imagine that a lot of them will be back, if not all of them. Obviously people have other things going on in their careers, so who knows if they will be all available. But many of those people are folks that have connections with Lin's previous works and if they aren't, feel like they very well fit in to this world. So exciting to see what happens to this. And folks like, we're already starting to look at the best new musical race for the Tonys next year, and it's stacked already. You've got Paddington, you've got warriors, you've got Galileo, you've got Wanted. There are a number of other things circling Broadway. Purple Rain, Black Swan, maybe the Greatest Showman, maybe a curious case of Benjamin Button. Lots of really, really interesting things are still working their way to Broadway. It hasn't opened yet off Broadway, and I haven't really heard any personal reviews yet because I was traveling. But Julia, the Poison Queen of Palermo is still out there. The Wanderer is still trying to get to Broadway. Working Girl is still there. So it can be a really interesting season for new musicals if a lot of these end up happening. But looking forward to that. And you know that there will be a ton of coverage around anything Lin Manuel Miranda does on Broadway. Now, you'll remember that when I last spoke to you, I talked about the fact that Jasmine Amy Rogers was leaving the Off Broadway production of the 25th annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. And what I said was at the time, I said I on Tuesday, I believe we're going to get an announcement about what show she will be doing next. I was partially right. On Tuesday, we did get an announcement about a show that she will be doing in this upcoming season. But what I did not know at the time is that on Monday we would also get another announcement about a show she will be doing this season. So let's start with the announcement that happened on Monday and that is the fact that we got the cast of the forthcoming Broadway premiere of Jocelyn Bio's Schoolgirls or the African Mean Girls play. The cast will feature the great Danae Benton, Patina Miller and Jasmine Amy Rogers. The show will finally come to Broadway after premiering Off Broadway in November of 2017. It will begin performances on September 8th with an opening on the 28th at the same LJ Friedman Theater from the Manhattan Theater Club. Whitney White will direct the production as she did Off Broadway. So very exciting. I think this is very cool, especially especially for Jasmine. As I said, getting an opportunity to be in an incredibly well written play to show those different sides of her. After doing BOOP and then Spelling Bee, she's going to get a chance to do a modern kind of emerging classic of the straight play variety and then she is going to next do one of the all time classics of the golden age musical theater variety. And that is because on Tuesday it was announced that Jasmine Amy Rogers will play Maria Von Trapp and the upcoming Lincoln Center Broadway revival of the Sound of Music. The show will be directed by Liere Debessinet and is currently scheduled for a 17 week run. But of course as we have seen from ragtime, shows that Lear directs that do very well certainly have an opportunity to extend. It'll begin performances on March 23rd at the Vivian Beaumont Theater with an opening night on the 15th. No other casting was announced. But you know, when I reviewed the Lost Boys, I talked about the fact that Ali Louis Borski has done in a very short amount of time because he's still in his mid-20s. Such a variety of roles from the company tour to Tommy to We Live in Cairo and now to Lost Boys. Jasmine is doing the same thing in her young career again, mid-20s to go from boop to spelling bee to School girls now to the Sound of Music. Just absolutely incredible. I think this is phenomenal casting and I am very excited to see who they put in that cast around her. But you know, I'm I've been vocally not the biggest Lear to be SNA fan in terms of the encores transfers to Broadway. So I'm hoping that the fact that this is not beginning as an encores concert because she's not the artistic director there anymore that this will be a more fleshed out production of the Sound of Music. I do think it's interesting that there will be a Sound of Music tour that is not related to this happening at about the same time, but you'll have an opportunity to see both, so that should be cool. The other show that was announced on that same day from Lincoln center is the fact that there will be the first ever Broadway revival of Aaron Sorkin's A Few Good Men that will play the Beaumont this fall. Tom Blythe, most recently seen on the big screen in the Hunger Games prequel the Ballad of Songbirds and and Snakes. He will play Lieutenant Caffey. Daniel Caffey, the role made famous by Tom Cruise in the film, starring opposite him as Colonel Nathan Jessup, will be somebody who knows extremely well how to make Aaron Sorkin dialogue hit. And that is West Wing star Bradley Whitford. The production will be directed by Michael Arden. It'll be in performances on October 8th with an October 29th opening night. It is scheduled for a 13 week limited run. Again, wouldn't be surprised if we have an opportunity to see some extensions on that one as well. This is not an extension in the way that I was talking about with those potential shows. It is kind of an extension because Paranormal Activity and Dash A New Story Live on Broadway has changed its date. It will still begin performances on August 14th and will still be a 20 week limited engagement on Broadway. However, instead of opening in early September, the show now has moved up its opening night. It will now open on August 25th before it moves to the August Wilson Theater. It will play a very limited run at Boston's Emerson colonial theater from July 11, which is just this coming week through July 30. Moving over to some Broadway casting news, it was also announced through a Variety exclusive that Emmy Award nominated RB singer and songwriter Luke James will join the Broadway production of Wanted. He will join the previously announced Soleil Pfeiffer, Lisi, La Fontaine and Lettice when performances begin at the James Earl Jones Theater on October 15th. Now I lead with James being a three time Grammy nominated singer songwriter, but he has appeared on Broadway before in the 2021 production of Thoughts of a Colored Man. He also stars on the Showtime Paramount plus show the Shy and has done a lot of other things. So not coming at this strictly from the musical perspective with plenty of acting and Broadway chops under his belt as well. And then finally in this section we found out that Samantha Pauley will be exiting the Broadway production of the Great Gatsby honestly something that I wasn't sure would ever happen because she seems to just be having such a fun time in the role of Jordan Baker. But she will mark her final performance on July 26 when she departs the production. She will have played the part over 900 times. They have not yet announced her successor, but I do feel like this is one where if they wanted to they could really star cast that role. Jordan is such a fun role. It has the new Money song that is such a a viral TikTok trend a couple years ago. I know Amber Ardelino has done it in the past over in the Korean production. So I don't know what their thoughts are if they're gonna go with somebody who's done it like Amber, somebody who is no association or if they're gonna try to get a somewhat big name either from Broadway or outside. But it'll be interesting to see not only who they cast there but also what Sam does next. I would not be surprised if we see her back over at the Lena Horne Theater. We've seen a lot of the original Broadway cast members of six return. I know that at least some of the current cast members, their contracts are up in August. So this timing would line up to see her come back as Kate Howard at some point during the during the run of the show. One that I still kind of feel like is probably going to wrap up in January. But maybe not. Maybe Sam Pauly comes back and that shoot the ticket prices back up to where they were originally. But nonetheless excited to see what happens for her next. All right, before we move off Broadway over to London to national tours, let's take a break real quick to talk about our sponsor for this week Factor. I have to tell you, with all the traveling that I have done, I have really missed being able to have a really good home cooked meal when I'm on the road. I tend not to eat out just because I can't really control what is in the meals that I have. So I get hungry a little bit. But now that I'm home, I am so excited to have my first delivery from being back home. So not only can I know what's going into the food that I'm eating, in terms of the macros, the ingredients, all of those things. Obviously all of Factor's meals are dietitian approved but they're also crafted by chefs. So I know that they are going to be absolutely delicious and they help me maintain all the goals that I've been working towards over the past three and a half years ish months. I'm really looking forward to the truffle butter filet mignon coming in my box. It has potato, leek mash and carrots with it. Love those cooked carrots to go along with a good steak. But if you stay away from red meat, there's tons of great chicken, pork, seafood options in there as well. I don't really do a whole lot of seafood, but they've got salmon, they've got trout. So many great options for you no matter what you are looking for. Whether that's in terms of your taste buds or a specific type of diet that you are looking for for whether it's weight loss, overall nutrition, more protein, GLP One support factor has meals built around all of the different types of goals that you are working towards in your food and in your life. And for me, as I am really paying attention to the macros that I'm putting into my body, every meal is crafted with functional ingredients, lean proteins, colorful vegetables, whole foods and healthy fats. In fact, factor bans over 175 ingredients from its meals to make sure you are only only getting the most healthy and nutritious things possible. They have no artificial flavors or sweeteners, no high fructose corn syrup, no refined seed oils, just nutrient dense foods. And since they are fresh and never frozen and ready to eat in just two minutes, what more could you ask for when you are getting meals delivered to your door? You all know I have been using Factor for a very long time and it does not get better than that when it comes to meal delivery. So head to factor meals.com broadway50off and use code broadway50OFF to get 50% off and free daily greens per box with new subscription only while supplies last until September 27, 2026. See website for more details. All right, we are moving off the Broadway and heading over to the west and where more cast members were announced to be celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Phantom of the Opera in London. And what's fun about this is the fact that two of the incoming stars are people that we have seen in the Broadway production of Phantom of the Opera but in different roles. Taking over the role of the Phantom will be Jordan Donica who has previously played Raul on Broadway and playing Carlotta will be Sierra Boggess, having previously played Christine on Broadway in the 25th anniversary production as well as in Love Never Dies. Really exciting. Beatrice Penny Ture will be playing Christine Daae and Rhys Whitfield will be playing Raul. The great Joanna Riding will play Madame Giry and Millie Lyon will play her daughter Meg. All of the beginning performance dates will vary, but Ciara will start her run on August 3rd, and Jordan Donico will begin his on September 8th. Moving back a little closer to home, over to Skid Row, we found out who will be the next Seymour and Audrey in the Little Shop of Horrors Off Broadway. Jordan Fisher and Nikki M. James will wrap up their runs on July 19th. Starting two days later will be Tony nominees Ethan Slater and Betsy Wolf. Now, look, I know that there have been people, our beloved Robbie Wiesel included, who have thought that some of the Seymour selections are a little too hunky. I don't know what Robbie or other people's thoughts are on Ethan Slater's hunkiness, but otherwise, I think this is near perfect casting. I've always talked about how there needs to be a little bit of an age gap between Seymour and Audrey. She's lived a little bit more. He's a little bit more naive. She talks about having. How she's. She's lived a rough life. And we know that Betsy is incredibly funny. We know Ethan can play kind of a nerdy guy. So I think this is an incredible casting for them. And they just continue to knock it out of the park over the west side Theater. Now, at one point, Betsy Wolf played Rona Lisa peretti in the 25th annual Putnam County Spelling Bee National Tour. Now taking over that role off Broadway will be Tony Award winner Alex Newell. Alex will take over for Lilly Cooper, whose final performance will be on Sunday, August 2nd. Alex will be in performances on Friday, August 7th. Still starring in the show will be another Glee alum Kevin McHale. So that'll be fun to see Alex and Kevin interact on stage, especially for that first time moving just next door over at New World Stages. We also found out over the past couple weeks that Heathers will wrap up its Off Broadway revival this coming November. It has been extended many, many times. It'll have its closing performance on November 8th, but we already know that it will launch a North American tour in May of next year. Speaking of national tours, you know, I wasn't sure that I was going to include this, but the creative team behind it makes me feel like I have to. But starting in the fall of 2027, there will be a new tour called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Live on stage. It is inspired, of course, by the original classic cartoon about the mutants in a half shell that I grew up on. But the reason I am bringing this up is the fact that it is being produced by Eva Price. It is being directed and choreographed by two time Tony nominee Jennifer Weber and it is being written by Emmy winning playwright and screenwriter Kwai Nguyen, who obviously has had a lot of success on screen, but we know from the stage with Viet gone, she kills monsters. Poor yellow rednecks. With that kind of creative team, I'm really interesting to see what this is all about. I was actually, during my trip out to Los Angeles and Las Vegas, I had a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles shirt that I wore a couple times. It's actually the original actual artists, Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello and Michelangelo with the colors of each turtle over their eyes. Like the, the masks that they wear got a couple nice little chuckles out of that from people who were in the know who understood what the shirt meant. So that was kind of fun. But Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles live on stage, exclamation point, will be a 90 minute show with no intermission, launching a national tour next fall and finally wrapping up with a little bit more national tour news. It was announced that Mystic Pizza Colon, a new musical, will begin a national tour from Elmira, New York in September. This is the production that I saw down here in Florida and then went up to Paper Mill Playhouse. It is directed and choreographed by Jennifer Werner. I'm guessing this is going to be a non equity tour, but that was not announced in the official press release. But nonetheless, the casting will be announced at a later date. All right, that's all I've got for you today. Thank you so much for supporting Broadway radio.
