hi and welcome to Broadway Radio's episode of Last Week on Broadway for Monday, July 20, 2026. I'm Broadway Radio's Matt Tammanini. On this week's episode, I'm going to run you through a smattering of little bits of news that we got in the latter half of this week and then talk about a rather thin schedule looking at what is going to be happening on New York stages this coming week. Of course, we are in the middle of summer. The dog days are here. So not a ton of shows closing at this point, but also not a lot of shows beginning previews and opening especially on Broadway. There are a handful of things happening off Broadway which we will obviously talk about, but we are going to start on the Broadway where on Saturday we got news of who will be joining the Broadway production of the Rocky Horror show taking over the role of Columbia, which Michaela J. Rodriguez played until June 21. Of course, with the extension of this show, it was originally only going to be a summer run. Now it is playing all the way through November, so we have gotten a handful of people coming in and out for other responsibilities. We know that Sherri Renee Scott has already joined the production replacing Juliette Lewis. Now we know that in place of Michaela J. Rodriguez will be RuPaul's Drag Race and Rent Live star Valentina this will mark her Broadway debut. She will begin performances tomorrow, Tuesday, July 21 and in a statement Valentina said that she is quote honored to be debuting on Broadway as the first trans Mexican American featured in a principal cast. In addition to her work on various versions of RuPaul's Drag Race all Stars, different ones around the world. As I mentioned, Valentina played Angel in Rent live back in 2019. She also had a cameo in the in the Heights movie in 2021. She also did a Spanish language musical film. So she has been living in the world of musical theater even if this will be her Broadway debut. So it is currently on sale to play through Thanksgiving weekend. So if you haven't had an opportunity to see it, head over to Studio 54. Speaking of a show that I think many, many people will want to see, on Friday it was announced that there will be a new West End production of Tracy Letts Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winning play August Osage County. The show will begin performances at the Noel coward theater on January 18th of 2027 for a limited 12 week release run. It will be directed by Jeremy Heron and will star as Violet Weston, two time Olivier winner and now recent Tony Award winner Leslie Manville. She'll be joined by two time BAFTA winner Anna Maxwell Martin as Barbara, Violet's daughter. Tickets are not on sale yet, but I'm already thinking about potentially going over to see it because August Osage county is a show that just fundamentally rewired a lot of my perceptions of theater. When I saw a regional production of the Alliance Theater in Atlanta in the early 2000 and tens, maybe late, maybe late aughts. I don't remember. So I'm fascinated to see a another production of this show. Especially with a cast of this caliber and with two stars like this leading it. I can only imagine what the rest of the company will look like when that eventually gets announced. In other news of a show that I guess could potentially rewire your thinking about what theater could be Last week Playbill reported that the Bill and Ted franchise making the move to the stage. Bill and Ted's most excellent rock opera is currently in development and is aiming for a 2027 world premiere. The project is being penned by the original co screenwriter of Bill and Ted's excellent Adventure, the first movie in the franchise, Chris Matheson, and it will feature a score by Jason Little, who is the founder of the band Granddaddy. I suppose the show is being developed in partnership with Emerson College, the Berkeley College of Music and Boston College Conservatory. There will be a nine day developmental workshop that'll be held this September at Emerson College. And with all of these schools working together in the Boston area, it should be no surprise that they are planning on having its world premiere in Boston. What is interesting about this partnership though is that students who are actors, musicians and designers will be working alongside industry professionals throughout the developmental process, which I think is very, very, very cool and something that I would love to see happen more often in the developmental process of these musicals. But no casting has been announced, but I do think it is kind of interesting. This is coming on the heels of Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter reuniting on Broadway last season in Waiting for Godot. But it'll be really interesting to see what this looks like, what this sounds like. I do feel like in terms of stage to screen adaptations, this one actually does feel like it could be a really fun, silly musical because of the time traveling nature of this, with all of the different types of historical figures that show up in the film. Everybody from Joan of Arc to Abraham Lincoln to Sigmund Freud to Beethoven and so on and so forth. Like, I think this could be really fun if it doesn't take itself too seriously. This is a show that leans into the ridiculousness, to the campiness, to the silliness. I think it could be a really fun show. I don't know anything about either of these writers. Obviously the screenwriter Chris Matheson knows this material better than anybody, so I hope that he's able to figure out a way to transition it to the stage. Speaking of shows in the developmental process coming to the stage, last week New York Stage and Film added the final title to its summer season and that is Boom for Real. It is a new musical centered on the life of iconic artist Jean Michel Basquiat and it features a score by John Legend in a book by Marcus Gardley. The company will offer the in development work as a one day only presentation. The this Saturday, July 25th up in Poughkeepsie. It'll be directed by Camilla Forbes and this is obviously working toward a larger production down the road. All right, going into some show and casting news last week we found out that Broadway's golden couple, Ivanoblzada and Reeve Carney will be wrapping up their runs in the Great Gatsby later this month. They'll take their final turns actually just this Sunday. Coming up on July 26, replacing Reeve as Jay Gatsby will be Ryan McCarten, who has done the show multiple times, so he will be returning taking for the role of Daisy Buchanan, will be one of the stars of the Descendants franchise as well as Black lightning on the CW. A superhero show will be Chyna Anne McClane. She will begin performances on August 3rd in the one week before McClane starts her turn as Daisy. Sinzel Amadi will make her Broadway debut from July 27th through August 6th, 2nd as Daisy. They will be joining the rest of the cast that currently features Corbin Bleu, John Bailman, Lynette Hanau, Charlie Pollock, Matthew Saldivar. We know Samantha Pauley is departing the production as Jordan Baker. We don't know who's gonna be taking over for her yet, but I would imagine we will find out that news very soon, likely in this coming week. Moving off Broadway even before performances begin, we found out that La Femme Theatre Productions upcoming revival of Wendy Wasserstein's An American Daughter has added performances over the Pershing Square Signature Center. It will begin performances on July 23rd. I'll talk about more about that here in just a second. It'll officially open on August 11th and they have added two extra weeks to its run and it will now play through September 20th. The show is led by Montego Glover, Robert Sean Leonard, Mary Beth Peel, Dakin Matthews and more. All right, let's dive into what is happening on and off Broadway in New York City this coming week and we're going to start over the D Roth Theater with a new one person show called Rosie o' Donnell Colonial Common Knowledge. I don't think I have to tell you that. This show is written and stars comedy and TV icon Rosie o'. Donnell. It is currently scheduled to play just for a few weeks through August 8th at the Daryl Roth. It had previously had a sold out run in Dublin, Ireland and at the Edinburgh French Festival. Rosie o' Donnell has moved to Ireland and the show is now coming to her actual hometown of New York City. It is the first time she's done a stage show in almost a decade and Rosie shares unfiltered reflections on leaving the US Raising and learning from her fiercely bright youngest child, Clay, and adjusting to a new yet familiar culture. Performances begin on Wednesday, July 22 and run through August 8 barring any extensions. Then on Thursday we have three Off Broadway shows beginning previews. The first happens over at the Pershing Square Signature Center. We will be back there again here in a minute and it is the aforementioned production of Wendy Wasserstein's In American Dream Daughter from La Femme Theatre Productions. I already told you all about that. More information will be in the show notes. Then also on Thursday over at the Soho Playhouse will be the new play from Blackwatch Theater called Hungry Women. It stars Julia Lester. The play was written by Melissa Manny and directed by Daniela Cagiano. The show looks at an imagined history that is called both twisted and absurd, in which men went extinct over 100 years ago and women are in charge. The show does touch on everything from cannibalism, ghosts, science fiction, survival, identity, sexuality, motherhood and more. It is only scheduled to play for six weeks and is set to run through August 30, barring extensions. So if you want to check that out again, more information in the show notes heading back to the Signature center on Thursday we will also have the first preview performance of the new play Disruption by playwright Andrew Steinen, directed by Hirsch Ellis. This show has an absolutely unbelievable cast. It features Irene, Sofia Luccio, Jason Ralph Conrad, Rickamora, Jasmine Sharma, Elizabeth Stanley, Joe Tippett, John David Washington and Sean Nett Renee Wilson. It is set to play for eight weeks only through September 13th and it follows tech entrepreneur Nick, who thinks he has the answer. After tremendous Silicon Valley success and a big exit, Nick presents his three best friends with his next big Idea, an algorithm that is more complex than the human brain and promises to guide them through big life decisions better and more effectively than they can guide themselves. With a cast like this, like, I don't even have to know anything about the playwright, the director, the show itself. You just have to tell me these people are in a show and I would highly, highly recommend it and would love to see the production at some point. Then moving outside of the theater district and heading uptown into Central park. On Saturday, July 25, we will have the first performance of Shakespeare and the park's production of the Winter's Tale. It is being directed by Daniel Sullivan and choreographed by Mimi Lieber. The show is scheduled to run through August 23rd. As always, there are some very cool names in this production including Raoul Esparza, Lily Rabe, Chuck Cooper, Steven Skybell, Marcia, Stephanie Blake, Isabel Ferreira and more. If you have never seen the Winter's Tale, this certainly seems like an opportunity to do it with a fantastic cast back in the Delacorte Theater. Then also on Saturday we have an Off Broadway closing back at the Signature Center. This is the place Play small Off Broadway. I have information in there. Actually years ago with a different production I did an interview with the writer in the Stars. If you want to go back in the archives and find that you should definitely do it. And then on Broadway we will have the final performance of the Broadway revival of August Wilson's Joe Turner's Come and Gone. Speaking of things you can go back and listen to, I had a full review of this production back in the spring. If so, you want to go listen to that and see if you maybe want to try to get a ticket during its final week. Would highly recommend it. All right, everybody, that's all that I have for you today.
