Welcome to the 2025 Tony Nominations Edition of Today on Broadway. I'm Broadway Radio's Matt Tamanini. I am coming to you just shortly after Wendell Pierce and Sarah Paulson finished racing through the Tony nominations. My God, slow down people. You were on YouTube. Let us catch our breaths. But I have the full list of all of the nominations. I'm going to run you through every single category here. Don't forget on Friday's episode of Today on Broadway, Grace Aki and I, I think are going to be giving our thoughts on these nominations assuming she can pull herself away from all of her marketing work with the Tony nominated shows that she works with. But I will throw in a little bit of of insight into my thoughts on these as we go through. I'm not going to do a ton because I'm going to save that for Friday. And also like I said, I'm just coming through these. I'm still kind of have my head swirling because it was hard to keep up and I was trying to feverishly take notes as we went through. But let's start with the big ones. Let's go with production categories. First. In the category of best musical, the nominees are Buena Vista Social Club, Dead Outlaw, Death Becomes her, maybe Happy Ending and Operation Mincemeat. Throughout these I will also go through what I predicted in the categories. If you are in Patreon, you were able to listen to Oliver Henry Roth and I go through the nominations that we predicted in all of the production, performance and directing categories. I got four out of the five here. I had Buena Vista, Dead Outlaw, maybe Happy Ending in Operation Mincemeat. I also had Real Women have Curves but noted that I thought Death becomes Her was the next possible one. So I did. Ms. Real women have Curves. Death Becomes her is in that slot. Instead. Best play. The nominees are English the Hills of California. John Proctor is the villain, oh Mary and Purpose. I had English John Proctor, oh Mary and Purpose. I had Good Night and Good Luck in that slot. But I also did note there as well that Hills of California was the most likely one to slide in if Goodnight Good Luck was not nominated. Going over to best revival of a musical, the nominees are Floyd Collins, Gypsy Pirates, the Penzance musical, and Sunset Boulevard. In this category, Tina Landau and Adam Gettle are eligible to win Tonys for writing Tina Landau book and additional lyrics and Adam Gettle music and lyrics. Because this is the first time that Floyd Collins has been on Broadway and they are both still alive. So should Floyd Collins win best revival of a musical, Tina Landau and Adam Gettle will be awarded Tonys in addition to the show's producers who normally win in production categories. I had all five of these. That was pretty unsurprising there. In best revival of a play, the nominees are Eureka Day, Romeo and Juliet, Our Town, and Yellowface. Similarly to Landau and Gettle, in the musical category for the best revival of a play, Jonathan Spector is eligible for Eureka Day, and David Henry Wong is also eligible for Yellowface because neither of those shows have been on Broadway. I had Eureka Day, Yellowface, Romeo Juliet. Correct. But I also had Glengarry Glen Ross, and I'm honestly a little surprised because that means that there is not a single currently running show in this category. All four of the nominees are closed. Let's go into the performance categories now with best performance by an actress and a featured role in a play. The nominees are Tala Ashe for English, Jessica Hecht for Eureka Day, Marjan Neshat for English, Fina Strazza for John Proctor as the villain, and Kara Young for Purpose. I had Ashstrasza Neshat and Young, but I had Bianca Lee in there for oh Mary with Hecht getting that spot instead. Again, Hecht was the one that I had as next up, best performance by an actor in a featured role in a play. The nominees are Glenn Davis for Purpose, Gabriel Ebert for John Proctor as the villain, Francis Zhu for Yellowface, Bob Odenkirk for Glengarry Glen Ross and Conrad Rickamora for O'Mary. I had Rick, Amora Zhu and Ebert. I had Bill Burr and Kieran Culkin in there for. For Glengarry Green, Ross. I'm a little surprised that neither of them is in there, but Odenkirk is so very interesting about that. Best performance by an actress in a featured role in a musical. The nominees are Natalie Venetia Belcone for Buena Vista Social Club, Julia Knightle for Dead Outlaw, Gracie Lawrence for Just In, Justina Machado for Real Women have Curves and Joy woods for Gypsy. I had Belcon Machado and Lawrence. I also had Leslie Margarita and Jinx Monsoon. They did not get in there. I will say Oliver Roth, when I mentioned Julia Knitel, he said absolutely, she is in. So Oliver called that one, which I think is a little bit of a surprise because she was not nominated for a drama desk last year when Dead Outlaw was eligible. And Joy Woods a little bit surprising because she has not really been featured as much in the precursor awards. But always happy for her to be nominated. And finally, for the featured categories we have best performance by an actor in a featured role in a musical. Brooke Sashmanskis for Smash, Jeb Brown for Dead Outlaw, Danny Burstein for Gypsy, Jack Malone for Operation Mincemeat and Taylor Trench for Floyd Collins. This is where things start to really get wild because Jeb Brown was not nominated for the award. Many of the awards last year while Tom Sessmo was. So I had Burstein, Malone and Ashmanskis. I also had Chris Sieber and Tom Sesma being nominated. Neither of them didn't we slide in. Jeb Brown for his cast mate with Tom Cessma and Taylor Trench. Really surprising getting in there to me for Floyd Collins over some of these other other guys, including Jason Gote who is his castmate in that show. Let's go to the lead categories now. Best performance by an actress and a leading role in a play. The nominees are Laura Donnelly, the Hills of California, Mia Farrow, the Roommate, latonya Richardson Jackson for Purpose, Sadie Sink for John Proctor is the Villain and Sarah Snook for the Picture of Dorian Gray. I had all five of those. Best performance by an actor in a leading role in a play. George Clooney for Goodnight and Good Luck, Cole Escola for oh Mary, John Michael Hill for Purpose, Daniel Dae Kim for Yellow Face, Harry Lennox for purpose and Lewis McCartney for Stranger Things. The first shadow. You'll notice there are six nominees here. That means that there are two people within 10%. So we have an extra nominee. I had Clooney, Escola, McCartney and Hill. I had Jake Gyllenhaal in there, so I missed that. And then you throw in two. I had Daniel Dae Kim as my next one up. Harry Lennox was not even on my board. I'm shocked that he got this nomination. Not that he was bad, but it just really didn't seem to me like a Tony winning performance. But nonetheless, here we are. Moving over to the musical categories. Best performance by an actress and a leading role in a musical. Megan Hilty for Death becomes her, Audra McDonald for Gypsy Jasmine, Amy Rogers for Boop, Nicole Scherzinger for Sunset Boulevard and Jennifer Simard for Death Becomes Her. I had Audra, Jasmine, Nicole and Jen. I had Helen J. Shin in there instead of Megan Hilty. That one's probably the one that I'm most sad about. That Helen J. Shin did. Got. Did not get nominated. I think she absolutely deserved it and. But I think she just kind of got elbowed out by the star power of Jen Simard and Megan Hilty both getting in there. Best performance by an actor in a leading role in a musical. Darren Criss may be Happy ending. Andrew Duran, Dead Outlaw. Tom Francis for Sunset Boulevard, Jonathan Groff for Just in Time, James Monroe Iglehart for A Wonderful World, which was a surprising. And Jeremy Jordan for Floyd Collins. Again, there is six there. That means there was a tie. I had all five of those correct. And then James Iglehart with the tie that I did not have in there. All right, moving on to the directing categories. Best direction of a play. Newt Adams for English, Sam Mendez for the Hills of California, Sam Pinkleton for oh Mary, Donya, Taymor for John Proctor is the Villain and Kip Williams for the Picture of Dorian Gray. I had Pinkleton, Taymor and Williams in there. I did. I also had Phylicia Rashad for Purpose and Stephen Daughtering, Justin Martin for Stranger Things, the First Shadow. So Adams and Mendes getting in there, while I thought very deserving, were not on my list. And then best direction of a musical. The nominees are Sahim Ali for Buena Vista Social Club, Michael Arden for maybe Happy Ending, David Cromer for Dead Outlaw, Christopher Gattelli for Death Becomes her and Jamie Lloyd for Sunset Boulevard. I had Cromer, Floyd Arden and Gattelli did not have Sahim Ali. I had Robert Hastie for Operation Mincemeat instead. Alright, let's run through the design and other artistic categories. The nominees for best book of a musical go to Buena Vista Social Club for Marco Ramirez, Dead Outlaw for Itamar Moses. Death Becomes her for Marco Pinette. Maybe Happy ending for Will Aronson and Hugh Park. Operation Mincemeat goes to the team of David Cumming, Felix Hagan, Natasha Hodson and Zoe Roberts. Best original score. The nominees are Dead Outlaw for David Yazbeck and Eric Dellapena. Death Becomes her for Julia Madison and Noel Carey. Maybe Happy Ending for Aaronson and Park. Operation Mincemeat for that team I just mentioned, Real women have Curves for Joy Huerta and Benjamin Velez. Best scenic design of a play go to Marsha Ginsburg of English Rob Howell for the Hills of California, Marg Harwell and David Burke Bergman for the Picture of Dorian Gray. Miriam Buther in 59, which is a collective of artists, goes to Stranger Things, the first shadow, Scott Pask for Goodnight and Good Luck. Best scenic design of a musical. The nominees are Rachel Hauck for Swept Away, Dane Laughtery and George Reeve for maybe Happy Ending, Arnulfo Maldonado for Bunda Vista Social Club and Derek McLean for both death Becomes her and Just in Time. Best costume design of a play Brenda Avendandolo for Goodnight and Good Luck, Marg Harwell for the Picture of Dorian Gray, Rob Howell for the Hills of California, Holly Pierce for oh Mary and Bridget Reifstuhl for Stranger Things, the first shadow. Best costume design of a musical Didi Aitay for Buena Vista Social Club, Greg Barnes for Boop the Musical, Clint Ramos for maybe Happy Ending, Paul Tazewell for Death Becomes her and Kathryn Zuber for Just in Time. Best lighting design of a play. Natasha Chivers for the Hills of California, John Clarke for Stranger Things, the first Shadow, Heather Gilbert and David Bengali for Good Night and Good Luck, Natasha Katz and Hanno Wasileski for John Proctor's the Villain and Nick Schleiper for the Picture of Dorian Gray. Best lighting design of a musical Jack Knowles for Sunset Boulevard, Tyler Michelow for Buena Vista Social Club, Scott Zelinsky and Rue Horg's Son for Floyd Collins, Ben Stanton for maybe Happy Ending and Justin Townsend for Death Becomes Her. Best sound design of a play. Nominees are Paul R. Diddy for Stranger Things, the first Shadow, Palmer Hefferin for John Proctor as the Villain, Daniel Kluger for Goodnight and Good Luck, Nick Powell for the Hills of California and Clements Williams, the Picture of Dorian Gray. Best sound design of a musical. The nominees are Jonathan Deans for Buena Vista Social Club, Adam Fisher for Sunset Boulevard, Peter Helinski for both Just In Time and maybe Happy Ending and Dan Moses Schreier for Floyd Collins. Best choreography goes to Joshua Berghese for Smash, Camille A. Brown for Gypsy, Christopher Catelli for Death Becomes Her, Jerry Mitchell for Boop and Patricia Delgado and Justin Peck for Buenavist Social Club. Best orchestrations go to Andrew Resnik and Michael Thurber for Just In Time, Will Aronson for maybe Happy Ending, Bruce Coughlin for Floyd Collins, Marco Paguilla for Buena Vista Social Club and David Collin and Andrew Lloyd Webber for Sunset Boulevard. Those are all of the competitive Tonys. There were two special Tonys that will be given out this year. Special Tonys will go to the musicians who make up the band for Buena Visa, the Social Club, which is fantastic, and the illusions and technical effects for Stranger Things, the first Shadow. In total, there were three shows that led the Buena Vista Social Club, Death Becomes her and maybe Happy Ending. In terms of plays, John Proctor is the villain in Hills of California, tied 4, 7 apiece, which led all plays. There were a handful of shows that did not get any nominations at all and I think I got all of these. But feel free to correct me if I am wrong, but we did not get anything for Othello, Home Job, Once upon a mattress, McNeil left on 10th, Tammy Faye Elf Redwood the last five years or the Cult of Love, which was my favorite play of the year so far, which I was really disappointed. I think that's absolutely a play that would have won a Tony in a lot of other years. It's not even getting nominated for a single thing this season, which is wild and I think speaks to just how great of a season this was. So last year I said that I thought there was a lot of like doubles and not a lot of home runs. I think there are home runs this season. I think there are some shows that are absolutely great, great shows. I think that maybe Happy Ending is a great show. I think Sunset Boulevard is a great show. I think Purpose is a great show. And then I think there's a lot of like triples. I think Buena Vista Social Club is a triple. Death Becomes her, maybe a double Picture of Dorian Gray a triple. English a triple. There's a lot of these. I haven't seen a lot of these ones that are that are leading nominations. Things like Dead Outlaw, John Proctor is the Villain, Floyd Collins, Just In Time, Stranger Things, the First Shadow. I haven't seen those yet, so I will certainly be excited about that. Also Rare Women have Curves in Smash. So excited to wrap up this season starting on Saturday.
