Welcome to Today on Broadway for Tuesday, June 24, 2025.
Matt Tamminini
I'm Broadway Radio's Matt Tamminini and I'm.
Grace Aki
Tell me on a Sunday podcast. Grace Aki.
Matt Tamminini
Grace, we are in the middle of summer. We have gotten past the summer solstice.
Unknown Host
From what I understand, things are hot.
Matt Tamminini
In the New York City area. Please tell me more because I did not see enough people on social media complaining about it yesterday.
Grace Aki
It's so bad, Matt. It is so bad. And tomorrow it's going to be a. It's going to be horrifying. And that is okay. But we are, we are struggling out here, folks. Pray for your friends walking in and out of Shubert Alley right now. It is a sauna outside.
Matt Tamminini
And that's the thing for me is like, you know, I live in central Florida where like 90s and then, like, feels like heat is in the upper 90s. Like, that's regular for us. But we drive everywhere. Y' all have to walk everywhere in New York and around there. So, like, I, as much as like, some people in Florida are like, oh, you complaining about the same temperatures as we have. Like, it's a completely different thing when you actually have to be outside for.
Unknown Host
More than just the walk to the car.
Matt Tamminini
So I completely sympathize. I wish you the best. But let's dive in to the news. Hopefully that will cool you off a little bit.
Unknown Host
And yesterday we got some casting announcements from two shows in the upcoming Manhattan Theater Club season.
Matt Tamminini
Let's start on Broadway, where we already knew that the new play by James Graham Punch is going to play this season. It's going to be directed by Adam Penford.
Unknown Host
The show will begin performances on September.
Matt Tamminini
9Th with an opening on September 29th.
Unknown Host
Now we know who will be starring in that production. And the cast includes Will Harrison, who I know from Daisy Jones and the Six.
Matt Tamminini
This will be his Broadway debut. He'll be joined by Camila Cano Flavia, who I also saw at the Samoa J. Friedman Theater.
Unknown Host
She was in Patriots.
Matt Tamminini
Sam Robards is in the cast, as is Lucy Taylor.
Unknown Host
There will be more cast announced coming up in the near future. And then off Broadway.
Matt Tamminini
We already knew that Ngozi and Yanwu's.
Unknown Host
New play, the Monsters, will run off Broadway beginning previews on January 23rd with.
Matt Tamminini
An opening on February 11th. We now know who two of the cast members will be. They are siblings Lil and Big, who.
Unknown Host
Reunite after a long time apart and must wrestle with their pasts. Lil will be played by Anje Mizel.
Matt Tamminini
And Big will be played by OKARITE in, I believe, his first New York theater credit since Jamie Lloyd's Dollhouse a couple seasons ago. Although he did appear on the Tony Awards, obviously, a couple weeks ago. So those two sets of castings obviously.
Unknown Host
Will not be the only sets of.
Matt Tamminini
Castings that we hear from Manhattan Theatre Club, both in its Broadway and Off Broadway seasons. But if you want more information about both of those productions, you can head over to the Show Notes. All right, Grace, we've been talking about this and I've already expressed my annoyance with this production. So I apologize that I'm gonna have to do it a little bit more. But we now know that this immersive Phantom of the Opera thing is not going to be called Phantom of the Opera.
Unknown Host
It is going to be called Masquerade.
Matt Tamminini
I think I told you last time we talked about this is like, don't think this is the production, like an.
Unknown Host
Immersive production of the same show you.
Matt Tamminini
Saw at the Majestic for so many years. This is not Phantom of the Opera proper. But yesterday we got a few more.
Unknown Host
Very weird details about this production, and.
Matt Tamminini
It has made me, honestly, a little pissy. So the opera Ghost, og, thank you for clarifying what that meant.
Unknown Host
Sent out a very bizarre press release.
Matt Tamminini
To a bunch of theater outlets that basically said, I need your help disseminating this information.
Unknown Host
I'll just read it to you.
Matt Tamminini
It says, quote, it has been brought.
Unknown Host
To my attention that you are a respected purveyor of mass communication. I have need for certain messages to be disseminated concerning my grand Masquerade Capitalized an elaborate presentation that continues the story. Continues the story. It is not the same story of my legend. Following my untimely and unwise eviction from.
Matt Tamminini
The Majestic Theater, I have selected you.
Unknown Host
To aid me in this matter. Here are the instructions for my intended guests.
Matt Tamminini
Now, this is actually useful information that people will know. You are strongly advised to sign my ledger by the 30th of June. That's the sign up to get information when tickets go on sale.
Unknown Host
This will ensure you'll be granted access to my production during the six weeks.
Matt Tamminini
I have elected to present it to.
Unknown Host
A very fortunate few.
Matt Tamminini
I would imagine that despite the fact that they are saying that this is six weeks, that this is one of those things, much like we've seen with the death of Rasputin.
Unknown Host
Immersive.
Matt Tamminini
They create an environment where people feel like they have to have pressure to go see it right away and then, you know, and then have plans to extend beyond that.
Unknown Host
But for now, six weeks will go on sale on June 30. Here's where it gets really annoying to me, Grace. The following requirements must be strictly adhered to. You must dress in black, white, or silver or a combination of these colors. You must at all times conceal your face. A masquerade mask in black, white or silver is required. Bring your own or purchase one at the door. Finally, a word of advice. Do not wear high heels.
Matt Tamminini
Whilst in certain circumstances these can be.
Unknown Host
Appropriate, they could be treacherous as you tread the secret catacombs and dark crannies that I have prepared for you. Further instructions will follow at my pleasure.
Matt Tamminini
I remain your obedient servant, OG now.
Unknown Host
Every single one of these requirements that.
Matt Tamminini
The OG has sent out, Grace, bothers.
Unknown Host
Me more than the previous one.
Grace Aki
Is it because it sounds like a Diddy party? Rel. It doesn't sound.
Unknown Host
Well, that was only white.
Matt Tamminini
Didn't Diddy only do white? What that was?
Grace Aki
That's right. That's right.
Matt Tamminini
Yeah.
Unknown Host
Yeah.
Matt Tamminini
But. Okay, so let's start with the dress code.
Unknown Host
I have said it here for years. I am a firm believer.
Matt Tamminini
And people should wear whatever the hell they want to the theater. I personally like to dress up a little bit. I don't, you know, do suit and tie or anything, but wear a collared shirt. I like to wear, you know, dress pants. You know, when it's appropriate. But, like, I don't care what you.
Unknown Host
Wear to the theater. If you are at the theater, if you are paying to be at the theater, or if you're invited for free, wear what you want. I am totally fine with that.
Matt Tamminini
But who knows how much these tickets are going to be?
Unknown Host
But they are requiring you to make a purchase to wear the mask that.
Matt Tamminini
They are requiring you to wear. Like, Sleep no More gave away these masks.
Unknown Host
I'm looking at my mask from Sleep no More in my office right now.
Matt Tamminini
They gave it to you. That was part of the ticket.
Unknown Host
You could keep it or you could leave it. The fact that they are going to require you to wear a mask and.
Matt Tamminini
Then pay for it annoys me even more. But then finally, the thing that I think is actually the most problematic of this whole thing is don't wear high heels. Presumably, as they say, because of how.
Unknown Host
You'Re going to have to walk around this immersive experience.
Matt Tamminini
If high heels won't work, how are people who have trouble getting around for whatever types of accessibility issues that they might have, how are they going to navigate this production?
Unknown Host
So everything about this is concerning.
Matt Tamminini
When it was first announced, I was excited about a reimagining A Phantom of the Opera.
Unknown Host
To me, it just sounds more and.
Matt Tamminini
More haphazard and thrown together from some.
Unknown Host
Of the casting that I've heard.
Matt Tamminini
I think the casting is going to be great, but it just feels like a lot of issues being compiled on top of each other. And I'm not sure, like, I hope.
Unknown Host
To be proven wrong, but this just.
Matt Tamminini
Sounds like a mess to me.
Grace Aki
You know, I. I say this not just solely in regards to this conversation or this production, but more so holistically in terms of theater in general. I think that a lot of times people forget, or productions may forget often, that if the first and only information that is being put out is not anything that, like, an audience, like, let's. Let's face it, you know what I mean? Like, audiences want to be enticed to go to something based on a cast list or something that is released about the show that is, like, exciting to them. Like, if. If the first things that we heard about this show was that every person that comes to this show gets a free blank and a shot of schnapps at the door, whatever it is. Do you know what I'm saying? Like, you have to enter the zeitgeist first with, what are people getting out of this? Then you can hit them with the. And here's how we'd like for you to enjoy this experience. Not. And here are the rules of. Because then I go, well, then I'll go see something else. Do you know what I'm saying? Like, I think that we. We often forget that, like, you have to come first, as with an open arm to. To invite audiences in before you start to, like, tell them what they can and cannot do in that space or if they're even allowed to enter it. So I think that this is not. It's not only about this show. I just want to be clear. Like, I know that 100 factors have to go into these things, but, like, I think that we're entering this era not only about, you know, the accessibility to your point, but also look at the way that sports incentivizes their fans in such a different way to be returning customers. And I'm not just talking about, like, the apps or the incredible food that is at the Mets stadium specifically, and the momofuku and the hot dogs and all the things. But like, of course, the hot special, the hot dogs have to be there. But like, the special, like, fan nights of things, they do not. The first thing that you don't hear about a season is not, guess what, you can only wear These outfits, and we're jacking up the prices. All right, hope you come. Like. Like, you have to. It's just we're in a new era. We're in a fiscally challenging time, and I think that we're forgetting the plot a little bit about how to communicate, because I understand if they're like, we want to theme this. We want to have these things. I think it's still cool, but the presentation of that information has to accompany other things, I think is the takeaway for me.
Unknown Host
Yeah. So what you're saying is if they.
Matt Tamminini
Would have said, get a Phantom of.
Unknown Host
The Opera bobblehead when you come on.
Matt Tamminini
This specific night, that would have been better.
Grace Aki
Where's the Labubu for the Phantom? I want to see him with the Labubu. I don't know, but do you know what I'm saying? Like, it's.
Matt Tamminini
It's not.
Grace Aki
I don't have Americans. You know, we. We are just now preconditioned to be like, gimme, gimme, gimme culture. And I think that's also been, like, relegated in the other capacity as well. So I'm just like, what are we doing here? I'm hopeful that we get some enticing news from this production is how I feel right now.
Matt Tamminini
Yeah. I mean, to be honest with you, like I said, like, I've. I've even teased some of the casting that I have heard. Hopefully that's still the case. But, like, if you would have put that information out weeks ago, I think there would be more excitement and less hesitancy over what this is, because right now, it does feel like it is.
Unknown Host
Being thrown together haphazardly.
Matt Tamminini
I know that they've had challenges in terms of the physical space because this was supposed to open in the spring, and they've had to delay and delay. And so who knows? Maybe the cast has been changing. But, like, I think you're 100% right from a marketing perspective that the rollout.
Unknown Host
Has not been a smooth or maybe even effective one.
Matt Tamminini
Maybe. Who knows? Maybe we'll find out that there's a huge demand for these tickets that I didn't anticipate, but we will have to wait and see. All right, let's take a break from the news real quick to talk about our sponsor for this week, surfshark. All right, here's a little fact for you. Your digital footprint is just as traceable.
Unknown Host
As your carbon one or even your fingerprint. And unless you're using a vpn, your.
Matt Tamminini
Data is basically waving to advertisers, asking them to inundate you with all of their sponsored posts, with all of their banner ads, with all of the emails, all of those things that you get annoyed about when they bombard you in the face. This is where today's sponsor comes in. Surfshark VPN as somebody who spends hours online researching all types of nerdy topics either for my own personal edification or for my day job, which is all about streaming and technology, I don't want trackers profiling me based on what I read because that is my day job.
Unknown Host
That is what I do for work.
Matt Tamminini
That's not what I want to be overrun by during the non business hours.
Unknown Host
Surfshark encrypts my connection so my data.
Matt Tamminini
Is safe even when I'm digging into whatever niche topics that I have to write about for work at an airport or at a hotel or any other place like that. But what's great about it is is that not only does surfshark protect my data, but it also has tons of benefits that impact me outside of my day job as well. Grace and I know you love it for those reasons as well.
Grace Aki
Something that I have recently gotten into just for the zeitgeist and the pop culture of it all is Love Island. And before you freak out, I get it. There is also Love island uk. Guess what I can utilize to watch things like that? A vpn. I love to take in pop culture, but sometimes a lot of the streaming services are not as fully international as I'd like them to be and I love being able to tap into what's going on in Japanese film culture and things like that. But I'm able to do so thanks to a VPN like surfshark.
Matt Tamminini
So it's time to take control of your online security.
Unknown Host
Try Surfshark risk free today and enjoy.
Matt Tamminini
Their 30 day money back guarantee. Go to surfshark.com tob for four extra months of Surfshark. That's code tob@surfshark.com the URL and code.
Unknown Host
Can be found in our show notes.
Matt Tamminini
Grace Yesterday we got a slew of casting announcements for the upcoming Williamstown Theater Festival season. This is a very interesting collection of.
Unknown Host
Shows this year because they are being.
Matt Tamminini
Helmed by a number of different types.
Unknown Host
Of artists, including Jeremy O. Harris, who.
Matt Tamminini
Is one of the people running the program this year.
Unknown Host
This is the WTF's 71st anniversary season.
Matt Tamminini
I'm gonna run through some of the theater related stuff first. There are some other dance and music presentations that you can find in the show notes as well, but this season is inspired in different ways by Tennessee Williams. Not only will there be productions, newly reimagined productions of Tennessee Williams shows, but they were also influenced by the spaces.
Unknown Host
He inhabited and inspired.
Matt Tamminini
The season will start with the previously announced production of Williams Camino Real which will feature an incredible cast led by.
Unknown Host
The one and only Pamela Anderson.
Matt Tamminini
She will be joined by April Mathis.
Unknown Host
And Nicholas Alexander Chavez, who for me.
Matt Tamminini
Will always be Spencer Kassadine on General Hospital as well as others in the cast.
Unknown Host
Then we will have a new show.
Matt Tamminini
Called the Gig after Movies and the World of Reason. Movies and the World of Reason is a novel that Williams wrote later in life. But what's interesting about this is this is going to take place in an actual ice rink and it is being.
Unknown Host
Choreographed by two time Olympic ice dancing.
Matt Tamminini
Medalists and Team USA champions Maya and Alex Shoe Bhutani.
Unknown Host
Next we'll have a Robert o' Hara.
Matt Tamminini
Directed production of Tennessee Williams Is Not.
Unknown Host
About Nightingales that will feature Brian Garage, William Jackson Harper, Chris Messina and more. And then over the summer, the aforementioned Jeremy O. Harris will have a world premiere of his new play, Spirit of.
Matt Tamminini
The People that just has an insane cast. It will feature a two blanks in Wood, Zachary Booth, Leo Meal, James Cousade, Moyer, Brandon Flynn Tane and Amber Heard.
Unknown Host
Yes, that Amber Heard.
Matt Tamminini
It is an absolutely incredible season at Williamstown Theatre Festival and one that I imagine we're going to be hearing a lot about with all of these stars.
Unknown Host
Coming up over the summer months.
Grace Aki
Grace, it's very exciting. I also want to say, like, I'm a big Chris Messina fan. Like I think he's so good in everything he's ever been in. It's just cool and I'm excited and I don't know how anyone's feelings about Jeremy or his work in the past, but like, the advocacy of regional theater development is very important conversation right now. And if you follow him on any type of social media, the coverage that he's been able to give towards Williamstown, et cetera has been really phenomenal. So I encourage all of you to check that out because you don't often see that from a creative, you know, let's face it, like not a lot of people are like wanting to post on the Internet that are in that kind of like, you know, capacity as a playwright, as a, you know, an activist, et cetera. So I just think it's very cool and I've really appreciated the visibility that Williamstown has gotten by utilizing his voice and his advocacy.
Matt Tamminini
Absolutely. All right, we got information about a.
Unknown Host
New Off Broadway play that is going.
Matt Tamminini
To be getting performances next month.
Unknown Host
This is a show called Girls Will Be Girls. It is written by actor and writer Claire Mack. It'll be in performances at the Pershing Square Signature center.
Matt Tamminini
Although it is not a Signature theater.
Unknown Host
Production on July 17. In the cast will be Mac. She is in the show playing K.
Matt Tamminini
And she will also be joined by Luna Sofia Miranda, who was in the movie Anora. The Oscar winning movie Anora, Charlie B.
Unknown Host
Foster, who is the son of Jodie.
Matt Tamminini
Foster and Shantae Miller. The press notes describe the show as a, quote, hilarious, evil feminist play and it follows three college girls who are.
Unknown Host
Attempting to reclaim their virginity over one.
Matt Tamminini
Wild night of booze and a Speedo clad boy. All right, let's wrap up the show with two recommendations. We've talked so much about the West End production of Evita. Now we have a video from West.
Unknown Host
End Live of Rachel Zegler singing Don't Cry for Me, Argentina.
Matt Tamminini
This is not at the balcony outside of the London Palladium, but this is at. This is a big event where tons.
Unknown Host
Of Broadway shows come out and perform.
Matt Tamminini
For free and for crowds to gather together, similar to what Broadway and Bryant park is, although that is spread out over like, I think entire month of July on Thursdays each week. So. So this is very cool. And then the last recommendation.
Unknown Host
It's very small.
Matt Tamminini
It's just a little clip.
Unknown Host
Hopefully we get the full thing at some point.
Matt Tamminini
We now have the full thing.
Unknown Host
It'll be in the show notes.
Matt Tamminini
Broadway Cares, Equity Fights AIDS and Jerry Mitchell put out a small video from Sunday night's Broadway Bears in which the.
Unknown Host
One and only Tony winner Nicole Scherzinger.
Matt Tamminini
Returned to her Pussycat Doll's roots and along with dancers from Sunset Boulevard, performed Buttons. This is just the end of the number, so I'm hoping we get to see the full thing at some point because Nicole going back to Pussycat Dolls days will never not be iconic for those of us of a certain age. So check that out in the show notes.
Grace Aki
I just, I want to point out, just for anyone and please don't come for me, but I very much appreciate a public performance in order to raise money for the LGBTQIA community, especially Broadway Cares performed by this person. And I hope that that's quite clear. That's all.
Matt Tamminini
And just to follow up on that, she ends the performance with saying, I believe this is a direct quote. Happy Pride, y' all. So just throwing that out there, everybody. That's all that we have for today. Thanks for listening to today on Broadway. Follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Broadway radio. And if you want more Broadway radio, head over to patreon.com broadwayradio Grace, where can people find you?
Grace Aki

Matt Tamminini

Unknown Guest
Award winning cast of sunset boulevards. But you keep fronting New York. But I a see nothing. Happy pride, baby.
Matt Tamminini
We love you, New York.
Unknown Guest
We love you Broadway fans.
BroadwayRadio Podcast Summary
Episode: Today on Broadway: Tuesday, June 24, 2025
Release Date: June 24, 2025
The episode kicks off with hosts Matt Tamminini and Grace Aki discussing the intense summer heat currently plaguing New York City. Matt, coming from the typically hot Central Florida, expresses surprise at the lack of social media complaints about the weather, wondering, "Please tell me more because I did not see enough people on social media complaining about it yesterday." (00:08) Grace passionately describes the oppressive conditions, cautioning listeners to "pray for your friends walking in and out of Shubert Alley right now. It is a sauna outside." (00:25) The conversation highlights the unique challenges New Yorkers face, emphasizing the difference between enduring high temperatures while driving versus being on foot in the bustling city streets.
Transitioning to theater news, Matt and Grace delve into the latest casting announcements from the Manhattan Theater Club's (MTC) upcoming season.
a. Broadway Production: James Graham's "Punch"
Directed by Adam Penford, "Punch" is set to begin performances on September 29th. The cast boasts notable names including Will Harrison, known for Daisy Jones and the Six, making his Broadway debut. Camila Cano Flavia from Patriots joins him, along with Sam Robards and Lucy Taylor. Matt remarks, "We already knew that the new play by James Graham Punch is going to play this season." (01:25)
b. Off-Broadway Production: "The Monsters"
Off-Broadway, Ngozi and Yanwu unveil their new play, "The Monsters," with previews starting January 23rd and an official opening on February 11th. The sibling duo Lil and Big will portray reunified siblings grappling with their pasts, played by Anje Mizel and Okarite respectively. Matt points out, "Okarite in, I believe, his first New York theater credit since Jamie Lloyd's Dollhouse a couple seasons ago." (02:16)
The hosts encourage listeners to check the show notes for more detailed information on both Broadway and Off-Broadway productions.
A significant portion of the episode is dedicated to discussing the rebranded immersive production formerly known as "Phantom of the Opera," now titled "Masquerade."
Matt expresses his frustration with the show's unconventional marketing approach, stating, "Every single one of these requirements that the OG has sent out, Grace, bothers more than the previous one." (05:45) The production mandates strict dress codes, including attire in black, white, or silver, mandatory masquerade masks, and a prohibition on high heels due to the immersive and physically demanding nature of the experience.
Grace criticizes the approach, arguing that the focus should be on enticing audiences with exciting cast announcements rather than stringent entry requirements. She articulates, "Audiences want to be enticed to go to something based on a cast list or something that is released about the show that is, like, exciting to them." (07:18) The hosts discuss the potential negative impact on accessibility, questioning how individuals with mobility issues will navigate the production without high heels. Matt adds, "If high heels won't work, how are people who have trouble getting around for whatever types of accessibility issues that they might have, how are they going to navigate this production?" (06:00)
Overall, the hosts express skepticism about the production's handling of marketing and accessibility, labeling it as potentially disorganized and off-putting for audiences.
Post the sponsor segment, Matt and Grace shift focus to the Williamstown Theater Festival (WTF), celebrating its 71st anniversary with a diverse and star-studded lineup.
a. Tennessee Williams-Inspired Productions
The season draws inspiration from Tennessee Williams, featuring reimagined classics and new interpretations influenced by Williams' life and spaces.
"Camino Real": Starring Pamela Anderson, April Mathis, and Nicholas Alexander Chavez (General Hospital) among others. Matt highlights, "She will be joined by April Mathis and Nicholas Alexander Chavez, who for me will always be Spencer Kassadine on General Hospital as well as others in the cast." (14:50)
"The Gig after Movies and the World of Reason": Set in an actual ice rink, this production is choreographed by two-time Olympic ice dancing medalists Maya and Alex Shook Bhutani.
"Tennessee Williams Is Not About Nightingales": Directed by Robert O'Hara and featuring Brian Tyree Henry, William Jackson Harper, and Chris Messina. Matt notes, "This is an absolutely incredible season at Williamstown Theatre Festival and one that I imagine we're going to be hearing a lot about with all of these stars." (15:30)
b. World Premiere: Jeremy O. Harris' "Spirit of the People"
The festival welcomes Jeremy O. Harris with his new play, "Spirit of the People," featuring a notable cast including Brandon Flynn and Amber Heard. Grace commends Harris' advocacy for regional theater development, stating, "The coverage that he's been able to give towards Williamstown, et cetera has been really phenomenal." (16:24)
The hosts express excitement about the festival’s lineup, particularly praising actors like Chris Messina and acknowledging the importance of regional theater.
Highlighting upcoming Off-Broadway offerings, the hosts discuss "Girls Will Be Girls," a play written by actor and writer Claire Mack. Scheduled to premiere on July 17th at the Pershing Square Signature Center, the cast includes Luna Sofia Miranda from the Oscar-winning film Anora, Charlie B Foster, and Shantae Miller.
Matt describes the play as "a hilarious, evil feminist play," following three college girls on a quest to reclaim their virginity over a wild night involving booze and a Speedo-clad boy. The hosts anticipate it as a bold addition to the Off-Broadway scene.
a. West End Live’s Rachel Zegler Performance
The hosts recommend watching Rachel Zegler's rendition of "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina" from the West End production of Evita. Unlike traditional balcony scenes, this performance is part of a larger event where Broadway shows perform for free, akin to the annual Broadway in Bryant Park festivities.
b. Broadway Cares Equity Fights AIDS – Nicole Scherzinger’s "Buttons"
Featuring a special performance by Tony winner Nicole Scherzinger, who revisits her Pussycat Dolls roots by performing "Buttons" alongside dancers from Sunset Boulevard. Grace emphasizes the importance of such public performances in raising funds for the LGBTQIA community, noting, "I very much appreciate a public performance in order to raise money for the LGBTQIA community, especially Broadway Cares performed by this person." (19:09)
Matt and Grace wrap up the episode by encouraging listeners to engage with the vibrant theater community, support diverse productions, and stay connected through their social media channels and Patreon for more Broadway insights.
