Welcome to Today on Broadway for Wednesday, June 18, 2025 on Broadway Radio's Matt Tammanini. I'm coming to you on my own today as Grace is out meta ing. I guess there's some sort of big creator thing happening in New York City, so she is otherwise occupied. So I'm gonna run you through all of the news by myself. But I did want to let you know that coming up in the regular feed and the Patreon feed today, depending on when you listen to this, maybe you have already heard it, there will be a new episode of Jan Simpson's Stagecraft in which she speaks with Kalundra Smith, who is the playwright behind the historical drama the Wash, which is currently playing at the WP Theater through the end of the month. So make sure that you listen to that. Obviously, any episode that Jan Simpson puts together, whether it's in her stagecraft or all the drama series, is certainly a must listen for theater lovers of all ilks, unfortunately. Today though, as we start the news, we do have to bid a fond farewell to the latest Broadway show to announce closing post Tony Awards and that is Real Women have Curves, which has set its final performance date at the James Earl Jones theatre for Sunday, June 19, which is in about a week and a half. At the time of closing the show, we'll have played 104 performances on Broadway, including 73 regular performances. It was nominated for two Tony Awards, did not win either, but it did not receive the always important Best Musical nomination. However, it did get a performance on the Tony Awards. However, looking at the grosses and then presumably the advance as well, the producers have decided to wrap up the show. Now, there was no announcement about a national tour happening. However, I hope that that is something that does eventually get announced because I think this show will do very well in different places across the country and if it doesn't happen, I would imagine that it will be one that is done regionally quite a bit in the coming years. The score, which was Tony nominated by Joy Huerta and Benjamin Velez, has a bunch of really catchy tunes and opportunities for a lot of different women to stand out. So sending our best to everybody over at the James Earl Jones Theater, and if you have not seen this one, I highly recommend that you do sometime between now and a week from Sunday. Speaking of those aforementioned grosses, last week, the first week post, Tony's Broadway lost two shows, down to 38 in total. That is because Othello and Goodnight and Good Luck closed on Tony Sunday and because those shows were massive Box office hits. In total, the gross dropped 14%, which is a massive, massive amount. It is over six and a half million dollars. However, on the average, Broadway did very well. The grosses came in at $39,204,872. Total attendance though, despite the 14% drop in grosses, only lost 5% in attendance, which is the same percentage in terms of the number of shows. So 313,343 people saw a Broadway show last week and the average ticket price dropped 10% down to $125.12. Without those big behemoth star studded plays leading the way, there were no shows north of 4 million, no shows north of 3 million, no shows even north of 2.5 million. But there were four shows that brought in more than $2 million last week. Those were led by Wicked at $2,341,054, followed by Glengarry Glen Ross at 2.27 million, the Lion King at 2.09 and then Hamilton at 2.06. The biggest mover of the week, perhaps unsurprisingly, was Sunset Boulevard which had its best week on Broadway, coming in at $1,665,762. Also having its best week on Broadway was the Picture of Dorian Gray which came in at $1.5 million. Next up on the grossest list was Aladdin. Then we had Omari at $1.35 million, which broke the Lyceum box office record. And then of course its own record for the 12th time. Then the rest of the shows north of seven figures were death Becomes Her Buena Vista Social Club Just in Time the Outsiders maybe Happy Ending MJ the Great Gatsby, Gypsy, Cursed Child and Stranger Things. The First Shadow Buena Vista Social Club Just in Time and maybe Happy Ending. All shows that had great nights at the Tonys, either in terms of awards or performances, also had their highest grosses of their runs on Broadway. As I said, the grosses for Rear Women have Curse did not get any bump from the Tonys. In fact it dropped over $49,000 from the previous week. So it is on the bottom of the grosses ladder and is obviously going to be wrapping up shop. The next show that also didn't see a Tony's bump at all was Dead Outlaw which saw a $54,000 decline to come in at under $450,000. I don't know how much longer that show has. It is probably not nearly as expensive as Real Women have Curves, but it played to less than 70% capacity last week, so I have to imagine that some of the conversations that real women have Curves has been having are also happening over at the Longacre as well. The other open ended show from this season that is kind of struggling is Boop. It dropped over $41,000 coming at 512,750 bucks, so keeping an eye on that one too. Operation Mincemeat didn't see a bump from the Tonys yet, but is still doing Fairly well at $763,000 in total despite losing those two big behemoth shows, Othello and Goodnight Good Luck, 22 of Broadway's 38 shows running played to 90% capacity or above. Omari and Wicked were perfect at 100%, Hamilton was at 100.44%. Then the picture of Dorian Gray and the outsiders were between 101 and 102%. And then John Proctor's the Villain maybe Happy Ending and Just In Time were all above 102%.
