Jose
Hey, we're slowly making Tuesday your favorite day of the week. One week at a time. Hey, you found the second Date Update podcast. Thank you for being here. It's Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning. But today is always your awkward Tuesday phone call. Yes. And you guys love it. I think. I know they do. I mean, the stats say yes because it's always one of the most downloaded of the week. So that is awesome. Thank you so much for being here. It is unlike any we've ever done before. I will say that. Yeah, it really is different. Different and possibly illegal. But we need to get to some listener comments first. Okay. I saw one from Diego Vela, 7, 079, who said, hey, I've been listening to the show every day since I found the YouTube channel. I would love to get a shout out from Jose doing the veto impression.
Brooke Fox
Please.
Jose
It's my fav. Favorite. Greetings from Mexico.
Brooke Fox
Hey, wait a minute.
Jay Shetty
What's this guy's name? Tell me whatever is the name again?
Jose
Diego Vela.
Jay Shetty
Diego Vela. What are the stupid numbers behind his name? He had a bunch of stupid numbers. Tell me the stupid numbers.
Jose
7079.
Jay Shetty
Hey, David. A villa. 7079. My favorite is a 7, 0, 8 0. Let's get you some pasta. Get back into the podcast. Oh, the pasta Casta.
Jose
Oh, yeah, the pasta Casta. There it is, the pasta Casta. And it's starting right now with your awkward Tuesday phone.
Brooke Fox
How far would you go to help out a friend?
Jose
Oh.
Jay Shetty
Oh, well, I think it depends.
Brooke Fox
Would you steal for them?
Jose
Yeah, probably. Yeah.
Brooke Fox
Would you lie for them?
Jose
Yes.
Jay Shetty
I don't know yet.
Brooke Fox
Would you cheat with their significant other and capture it on a secret camera to go back and show them I told you, he is no good. All seven times that night.
Jose
You did it out of a good place.
Lizzo
Yes.
Jose
Why didn't you keep sleeping? Wait, seven times?
Brooke Fox
Yes. Just to prove how bad he is. Well, one of our listeners says she has to do one of those things because she is in a tough spot.
Jose
I hope it's not the husband one.
Brooke Fox
Her friend has requested that she tell maybe the biggest lie of her entire life. And if she doesn't do it right, it could come back and ruin her friend's Career.
Jay Shetty
Oh.
Brooke Fox
So you'll hear why she needs to do this with our help in your brand new Awkward Tuesday phone call right after this. It's awkward.
Lizzo
It's Tuesday.
Brooke Fox
It's Awkward Tuesday phone call. It's an unfortunate fact that people lie all the time.
Jay Shetty
No, they don't.
Brooke Fox
I see what you did there.
Jay Shetty
Yeah, that was a lie.
Brooke Fox
That wasn't true. So some lies are really bad, but some are kind of harmless.
Jose
Yeah, some are necessary to be honest.
Brooke Fox
Yeah, yeah.
Jay Shetty
Depending on the situation.
Jose
Necessary lies in life.
Brooke Fox
Like, for example, where would this one rank? I'll say the statement, you tell me how bad it is.
Jose
Okay.
Brooke Fox
Brooke tells her family and friends she went to an accredited college.
Jose
I did?
Brooke Fox
Yeah. Keep the story going. I wouldn't change it if I was you either. You're in way too deep now.
Jay Shetty
I think she was just, like, a hillbilly in Montana for three years old. Everyone. She was out of college pretty much.
Brooke Fox
I understand why she twists the truth, but even Brook's web of deceit isn't as bad as the one our listener Lori finds herself caught in today.
Jay Shetty
Oh, that's gotta be really bad.
Jose
Where's your degree from? Lori.
Brooke Fox
Lori, welcome to the show.
Lizzo
Hi. Thank you.
Jose
Uh.
Lizzo
Oh.
Jose
Are you feeling bad?
Lizzo
Yeah. I mean, my friend put me in a really awkward position.
Brooke Fox
Oh, you're. So who lied in this situation, you or your friend?
Lizzo
My friend lied in this situation.
Jose
Oh, and then expected you to cover? Maybe.
Lizzo
Why?
Brooke Fox
What happened?
Lizzo
Yeah, so she put me down as a reference on her job resume without telling me.
Brooke Fox
Oh. Oh, God.
Jose
Oh, no. I mean, if she would have asked, what would you have said? I mean, you'd have to lie. That's one of those necessary lies you'd have to say. Okay, but you.
Jay Shetty
Like, if I just got a random call right now and it was like, brooke Fox is applying, would you. I would cover for you. I totally would. Like, you just.
Lizzo
Like, usually you just tell your friends.
Jose
If you put them as a rest. Yeah, yeah.
Brooke Fox
You would totally put Jose down on your resume, right?
Jay Shetty
Yeah. Like, ma'am, is he responsible?
Brooke Fox
Don't lie, Brooke. Don't lie.
Jose
I would definitely use Jose as my reference.
Jay Shetty
Oh, man. Never getting a job with Brooke as a friend.
Brooke Fox
So, Laurie, your friend didn't warn you that she was doing this?
Lizzo
No. So I didn't really know anything about it. Oh, no. But I did get a random voicemail yesterday.
Jose
Oh, okay. That's good. Yeah. So it went to voicemail?
Lizzo
Yeah, but it was like, some guy at a company. He says he wants to talk to me. About my friend. He wants to ask me a few questions. So, like, again, like, I didn't know about this. So I reached out to my friend and I'm like, what the heck? Like, what did you do?
Brooke Fox
Yeah.
Lizzo
And she was really sorry. Like, she didn't realize they would actually call the references, I guess, or she would have told me. So.
Brooke Fox
Yeah.
Jose
Okay.
Brooke Fox
I'm kind of. I didn't realize that people actually called the references.
Jose
Yeah.
Jay Shetty
I mean, you never felt like they did.
Jose
I've definitely worked in jobs where they told me that they don't.
Jay Shetty
I think it's more like, do you have three friends?
Brooke Fox
Because if you don't, that's a bad sign.
Jay Shetty
Yeah.
Lizzo
Yeah.
Jose
I mean, it's pretty bad if you put down somebody as a reference and they don't give a good referral.
Brooke Fox
That's why I didn't put my mom down as a reference. It was too risky. So do you know, did your friend put you down as, like, a past employer, like a professional reference?
Lizzo
Yes. Yeah.
Brooke Fox
Not as a friend.
Lizzo
Not as a friend.
Jose
Did you actually.
Jay Shetty
Okay.
Jose
Did you work with her?
Lizzo
No. She absolutely lied about it.
Brooke Fox
Oh, God.
Jay Shetty
That's the lie.
Lizzo
I don't know why you guys are.
Jose
I thought everyone does this. Yeah, but I totally.
Lizzo
I think if I check my references.
Jose
For this job, it was probably my friend. Yeah, if someone called your friends, you would have been outed in five seconds. Good thing you guys did it.
Brooke Fox
And I feel like it might be a generational thing where everyone in Alexis's generation doesn't really, like, know about that or how it works.
Jose
Oh, lied on the resumes.
Brooke Fox
Yeah. You know, falls wonders. Yeah. All falls under the same category. So now, Laurie, it sounds like you're in kind of a tough position. Like, what are you. What are you wanting to do?
Lizzo
Well, I don't know. Like, I called my friend. She's kind of begging me to call this boss person back and just, like, answer the questions and say nice things about her. But, like, I'm over here. Like, are you crazy? Because. Okay, here's the worst part. In the reference, it says that I'm a fluent French speaker. Oh, no.
Jose
Why? Why would it say that?
Lizzo
Because it's like an international brand manager job.
Jay Shetty
Oh, fans, International branding.
Lizzo
So I don't speak French. I don't want to speak it. I mean, I don't really know what I'm supposed to say. Like, do I just call this boss person and do it? Like, I need help.
Jay Shetty
Wait, you all. You do want call the boss. I thought you're calling Your friend here.
Jose
She can't change her reference if she wants the job.
Jay Shetty
God.
Brooke Fox
So you're the boss has reached out, like, asking to have this conversation.
Jay Shetty
So we're about to make a professional reference phone call, but we're going to.
Jose
Be on the other line. Like, the boss will know.
Lizzo
I know you play the awkward sound effects, so I think, like, I'll just hang up and then you guys just hit it.
Brooke Fox
I mean, Lori, if the boss busts you and realizes that you aren't really one of your friend's past employers, we should probably jump on to try and help you and your friend.
Jay Shetty
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Lizzo
I mean, I think I need help.
Jay Shetty
What about you and me? Quick French lesson in the next three minutes while a song.
Jose
You don't know any French fr.
Brooke Fox
If it makes you feel any better, Lori, we're radio hosts and we barely speak English. So you'll probably be able to get something passable by when we come back and give you our advice, then let you give a reference to your. A professional reference for your friend.
Jose
This is such a bad idea. I love it.
Brooke Fox
I know. That's why it's so great for your awkward Tuesday phone call right after this. Okay, hold on. It's awkward.
Lizzo
It's Tuesday.
Brooke Fox
It's awkward Tuesday phone call. We've done a lot of awkward calls on this show. Never one like this before, though, where our listener Lori, has asked us to assist in giving a professional job reference for her friend. There's a few problems with it. One, Lori has never actually worked with her friend in any professional capacity before, so that's a lie. Also, the reference implies that she's a fluent French speaker, which is not true at all. So hopefully the call doesn't even go there. But Lori wants to know how do we help her fake it to make it sound legit? Yeah, and luckily, Brooke fakes it every couple of nights, or at least her husband does.
Jay Shetty
So Brooke guys can't fake it.
Brooke Fox
Yeah, Believe me, Brooke, we need your fake wisdom here.
Jose
Okay? What does Lori do if she asks you to speak French? You just tell her you're on a French fast. Maybe you gave up the language for Lent. Maybe it was attracting too many men. You just are taking a break from French right now.
Brooke Fox
Too many carbs in the French language.
Jose
Yeah, you just are. Just can't do it right now.
Brooke Fox
Okay.
Jose
Yeah.
Lizzo
Yeah.
Brooke Fox
So lock that nugget into your mind. Jose, what advice do you have for Lori?
Jay Shetty
You need to set the expectation that you don't have a lot of time here.
Jose
Oh, that's not bad either.
Jay Shetty
You gotta be quick. This whole thing's gotta be quick.
Jose
Remember, you're important.
Brooke Fox
You're important.
Jay Shetty
You got some other billion dollar corporation you're running right now. You own Costco or something, right?
Brooke Fox
Yeah. Because I think the longer that you stay on the phone, the more you open yourself up to the opportunity to be found out as a fraud.
Jose
That's true.
Lizzo
Yeah. I really want to help my friend. I want this to work out, okay? I just want to get in and get out without crying or blowing.
Jose
Oh, no, don't cry.
Brooke Fox
That's called the brook anniversary. So let's.
Jay Shetty
And my friend is so sweet.
Lizzo
I'm really nervous. I think we should just like, hurry and just do this.
Brooke Fox
Okay? I'm gonna dial the numbers really fast and we'll jump in if you feel like you need help. But we won't. You've got this. Okay?
Lizzo
Okay.
Brooke Fox
Okay. Here we go.
Lizzo
Hello? Hi, is this Philip Mat?
Philip Mat
Speaking. Who's this?
Lizzo
Hi, my name is Lori Call. I'm a reference for Jamie Tack. You called me yesterday and left a message.
Philip Mat
Oh, yes. Thank you so much for getting back to me.
Lizzo
Yeah, of course. I mean, I'm happy to try and help if I can. I just. I don't have a lot of time. I'm a very busy, busy person with a lot of responsibilities.
Philip Mat
Totally understand. This shouldn't take long at all.
Lizzo
Great. So what can I say? Jamie is a fantastic person and a good worker, and I'd hire her.
Philip Mat
Okay. I haven't asked any questions yet.
Lizzo
I just wanted to let you know if you have specific questions, you can ask me. But that's, you know, she's a great hire.
Philip Mat
That's great information to know. But let's just go ahead and jump in and start with the first question.
Lizzo
Okay, Sure. I do have a meeting that's coming up soon, so just like, I have to jump.
Philip Mat
We'll take no time at all. So she was a little vague about her international sales experience. It was just a little unclear.
Lizzo
Yeah, well, in my experience, I had her doing sales internationally because she was just so good at them domestically. And I was like, you know, let's supersize it and take it overseas. So she did it and it was great.
Philip Mat
Okay, that doesn't give me a ton of specifics. This sales role, she would be interacting with people from other cultures pretty frequently. And it says here on her resume that she speaks French. And she mentioned that you had spoken French too. Pretty frequently. And so what is the level of expertise would you say that she has.
Lizzo
Yeah, I mean, I know that she is, she's an expert. Fluent in French. But I do believe she, she said that she's giving it up for Lent, so she's probably not going to be able to speak it to you for at least 90 days.
Philip Mat
So if she, if she's using French for her job, she's not gonna be able to use it for 90 days.
Lizzo
I, I, I, I, Yeah, I don't, I don't want to push her. I don't want to, you know, I know it's a, it's a personal religious choice.
Philip Mat
Okay.
Lizzo
Oh, and did you know that she was the one in charge of selling McDonald's fries over in France?
Jose
What?
Philip Mat
Like, like French fries? French.
Lizzo
Yeah, but she came up with the whole advertisement saying like they look like mini baguettes.
Philip Mat
Okay, that is interesting. I've absolutely never heard of that one before.
Lizzo
Oh, you never, you've never heard of that? That's crazy. I actually, well, I call her Le Tregente.
Philip Mat
The Three Intelligence.
Jay Shetty
Exactly.
Lizzo
Yeah. Because she is as smart as three people, but, you know, put into one body. Really inspiring. Okay, I think honestly, you really should just hire her. You won't be sorry. She's got real main croissant energy. Big, big cross soul energy.
Philip Mat
Okay, well.
Lizzo
Okay. I didn't even see the time. I gotta run.
Philip Mat
Okay, I will take that into consideration. And thanks for taking some time.
Lizzo
Yeah, hopefully that was helpful. It was great talking to you.
Philip Mat
Yeah, it was something.
Lizzo
All right, you two. Goodbye. Au revoir.
Philip Mat
Okay, thank you.
Jose
Awkward.
Jay Shetty
What?
Jose
He's gone, right?
Brooke Fox
Yeah, he hung up.
Jay Shetty
What the.
Brooke Fox
But Lori, you're still there?
Jose
Lori. What?
Lizzo
Yeah, I do not know how that just went.
Jay Shetty
You panicked.
Jose
Did you call French fries? Mini baguettes?
Lizzo
I don't know, it seemed interesting.
Brooke Fox
I think she was a little bit worried about the French references and the thing I was trying to overcompensate.
Jose
You were on a French fat. No, Frenchie.
Jay Shetty
Did you mention Fluffy, the three headed dog from Harry Potter? Somehow like the intelligence of three heads?
Jose
Yeah, I actually thought that was pretty good. Yeah, three people actually, that was actually. Out of all the things she said.
Jay Shetty
Okay.
Jose
Most solid.
Lizzo
Okay, I'm sorry. I really didn't know what I was saying. I panicked and I like, I mean, I knew some friends, so I just threw in what I knew I would go.
Brooke Fox
I think overall it's better than most of the reference job interview things that happen, at least at the radio station.
Jose
That is not a good comparison. Well, no, we don't have professional people here.
Brooke Fox
Well, it could have gone worse.
Jay Shetty
Okay.
Jose
That man left so confused.
Brooke Fox
Yeah, but maybe that builds the mystique.
Jose
Hopefully he thinks he's drunk or something. The French drink. Yes.
Brooke Fox
What we did today is we put the pressure on the second reference in her resume.
Jose
Yeah. Which is probably your best friend or her mom. Yeah.
Brooke Fox
Hopefully your friend has a good second person on that one, because that's the dog. Yeah.
Lizzo
Yeah. I mean, I guess I can say that I follow through.
Brooke Fox
You did.
Jose
I did.
Brooke Fox
You did it.
Jose
I think you need to tell her about the. At least the McDonald's campaign for French fries and baguettes. So if they ask her about it, she knows.
Lizzo
Yeah, I mean, I'm definitely gonna tell her, but it does kind of look like it, right?
Jay Shetty
Actually, I saw the comparison there. It's a long.
Jose
They should put baguettes in the kids meals in France. I mean, we all know that French fries come from France, right? Like, I don't know. I didn't even really get what she made up there. Was it just the campaign, that marketing thing, or was it.
Lizzo
Well, she's an international sales expert, so of course.
Brooke Fox
Dumb question. Okay, well, Jamie, the good news is you followed through on your promise to your friend. You gave her a reference.
Jose
Yeah.
Brooke Fox
It's not necessarily a great reference, I don't think, but you did it.
Jay Shetty
Yeah. You followed through and you didn't, like, offend anyone. Well, maybe everyone in France.
Brooke Fox
All our French listeners.
Jose
Can you do us a favor and update us whether or not your friend gets the job? I'm really curious.
Lizzo
Like, yeah, I definitely will. I tried reaching her earlier, but she's, like, working on some kind of, like, Rosetta Stone course, trying to pack in all that French.
Jose
Yeah.
Lizzo
Yeah. She really wants the job, so she's trying.
Jose
Fake it till you make it.
Brooke Fox
Yeah. Good luck to her. And good luck to you.
Lizzo
Thank you.
Jose
Brooke and Jeffrey, in the morning.
Brooke Fox
We recorded that call last week.
Jose
Yeah.
Brooke Fox
And we just got word yesterday. I think everybody should know there's an update on the job. Sit, dude.
Jose
I want to know, did her friend get hired or not?
Brooke Fox
Apparently her friend got to the final four candidates, but did not get hired for the role.
Jose
Okay, but that's not her friend. She made it to the final four. I don't know. Did she not get hired because of the references?
Jay Shetty
Yeah.
Jose
What.
Jay Shetty
What was this?
Brooke Fox
It might be for the best because it would be hard to live up to the lofty image that she had painted for her with all of the McDonald's stuff, the French voices.
Jose
That is so funny.
Brooke Fox
But maybe the best news out of all of this. This is their friendship is still intact. Oh yeah, friend appreciated. Lori went to bat for her and promises from now on she's not going to list her as a reference.
Jose
Yeah, I think after she heard the call this morning, she's definitely going to back that up.
Brooke Fox
She has asked if Brooke will be a reference for her. So Brooke, you got this.
Jose
I didn't do well in French, so.
Brooke Fox
I'm going to pass whatever language you speak, French or hopefully English. You can listen to all of our second dates, our awkward Tuesdays, wherever you get them, on Apple, Spotify. Check it out at Brooke and Jeffrey.

Brooke and Jeffrey: Second Date Update - Episode Summary
Episode Title: Awkward Tuesday: Bonjour Betrayal
Release Date: April 8, 2025
Host: Brooke Fox and Jeffrey (referred to as Jose in the transcript)
Podcast Platform: iHeartPodcasts
In this episode of Brooke and Jeffrey: Second Date Update, Brooke Fox and Jeffrey dive into one of the most challenging and cringe-worthy scenarios they’ve encountered: assisting a listener in navigating a deceitful reference situation that could jeopardize a friend's career.
The episode kicks off with an enthusiastic greeting from the hosts, setting the stage for an unusual and complicated listener interaction.
Jose:
"Hey, you found the Second Date Update podcast. Thank you for being here. It's Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning. But today is always your awkward Tuesday phone call."
[03:28]
Brooke:
"How far would you go to help out a friend? Would you steal for them? Would you lie for them?"
[04:00-04:11]
Listeners are introduced to Lori, a listener who finds herself in a precarious situation. Lori's friend, Jamie Tack, has listed her as a professional reference on a job application without prior consent or professional association.
Lizzo (Guest):
"My friend put me in a really awkward position."
[06:04]
Brooke:
"Her friend has requested that she tell maybe the biggest lie of her entire life. And if she doesn't do it right, it could come back and ruin her friend's career."
[04:38]
To tackle Lori's predicament, Brooke and Jeffrey simulate the reference call scenario, providing both comedic relief and practical advice.
Lizzo (as Lori):
"Hi, my name is Lori Call. I'm a reference for Jamie Tack. You called me yesterday and left a message."
[13:00]
During the simulated call, Lizzo attempts to vouch for Jamie, despite having no professional experience with her. The conversation quickly becomes tangled as Lizzo fabricates details about Jamie's supposed French language skills and her role in an international sales position.
Philip Mat (Simulated Employer):
"It says here that you speak French. And she mentioned that you had spoken French too. Pretty frequently. So what is the level of expertise would you say that she has?"
[14:25]
Lizzo:
"Yeah, I mean, she is an expert. Fluent in French. But I do believe she said that she's giving it up for Lent, so she's probably not going to be able to speak it to you for at least 90 days."
[14:48-15:04]
The call concludes awkwardly as Philip becomes skeptical of the fabricated references.
Philip Mat:
"I've absolutely never heard of that one before."
[15:37-15:44]
Lizzo:
"All seven times that night."
[04:11]
After the simulated call, Brooke and Jeffrey dissect what went wrong and offer insights into better handling such situations. They discuss the importance of honesty in professional references and the potential repercussions of deceit.
Brooke:
"It's not necessarily a great reference, I don't think, but you did it."
[19:02]
Jay Shetty:
"You followed through and you didn't, like, offend anyone. Well, maybe everyone in France."
[19:06]
