Hey, you found the second date update podcast. It's Brook and Jeffrey, and we're here with your awkward Tuesday phone call today. It's brand new, and I feel for this guy. He's got to have an awkward conversation with his neighbors, and when he gets nervous, something strange happens to him.
Craig
Some people to confrontation, and the other people are like, this guy.
Jeffrey
Yeah. Oh, man, you. You're in for it this time. He definitely needs our support. But before we get to the brand new call, what do we got on comments? Alexis? Yeah, Abraham said, I listen to you guys all the way from Germany at work, even though it gets me into trouble. But you guys are worth the risk. I love you guys and keep up with the dating world apocalypse.
Craig
How do we get you in trouble? You have, like, a serious job and you're laughing.
Jeffrey
Maybe everyone in Germany is ser. Okay, no laughing allowed there, I don't think. Just kidding. I'm just kidding. All right, here we go. Let's start this.
Brooke
You see it in TV shows and movies, but it's true in real life, sometimes neighbors, even if they get along, can get on each other's nerves.
Jeffrey
Yeah.
Brooke
Oh, yeah.
Craig
My neighbor tried to fight me, remember?
Jeffrey
I do remember. A couple times, I think.
Craig
Yeah.
Ryan Seacrest
Yeah.
Brooke
Especially bad when they decide to shut the blinds on that one window where your telescope's pointed at.
Danny
Yeah.
Brooke
Come on, Norman. I'm having the fun. But one of our listeners is dealing with a different kind of neighbor drama. And I can honestly say we have never had to give advice quite like this before. You're gonna hear why in your brand new awkward Tuesday phone call right after this. It's awkward.
Jeffrey
It's Tuesday.
Brooke
It's awkward Tuesday phone call. We've all had to deal with annoying neighbors before.
Unnamed Neighbor
Oh, yeah.
Craig
Or they are the annoying neighbors.
Brooke
It's possible it's Brooke and Jeffrey in the like. Brooke, remember when your next door neighbor wouldn't sell you his childhood home after you offered severely lower than market value.
Craig
But it was all cash and he.
Jeffrey
Has the gall to still live there.
Brooke
I know.
Jeffrey
Wow.
Brooke
Even after you had your daughter plant termites underneath his front porch and reported him to the city?
Jeffrey
He doesn't care, Jose. But he'd sell if he did.
Brooke
Yeah, I know.
Ryan Seacrest
What a jerk.
Brooke
Well, one of our listeners is having neighbor problems, too. And apparently it's bad enough where he emailed the show about it. So, Craig, welcome to the Brooke and Jeffrey studios. How you doing?
Danny
I'm doing okay.
Jeffrey
Oh, down, man.
Craig
Before we get into this and waste time. We know how the termites thing works out. We can send Brooks daughter over your neighbor if you like.
Brooke
That's always an option for us. But tell us what's going on with you and this neighbor.
Danny
Well, I tried to talk to this person a few times. Okay.
Jeffrey
No, biggest mistake. You tried to reason, be logical.
Danny
Right. But they've been evasive. Really? Really. And I'm really bad with the confrontation, as you can tell. You know, I need help.
Jeffrey
You need help.
Danny
I really need help.
Jeffrey
Okay.
Brooke
Okay, so give us a little bit of details about, like, what specifically is going on between you and this problematic neighbor.
Jeffrey
Yeah. And their name.
Danny
There's a couple and the lady's name is Danny.
Craig
Okay, you have an issue with Danny, but the neighbors are a couple.
Danny
I have a problem with both of them. Okay. And I'm not getting through to the guy. So now I figured that now I have to move to the wife.
Jeffrey
Okay, okay.
Craig
We're sensible.
Jeffrey
And not always. That is not always true.
Danny
Oh, wow.
Jeffrey
No.
Brooke
So what is the root of the problem?
Danny
Well, one of the problems, they keep borrowing stuff and they don't return it.
Jeffrey
Yeah.
Craig
Oh, that's kind of classic.
Jeffrey
Yeah. Give us an example. Like, what's the most exciting, expensive thing that they still have of yours?
Danny
They have a humidifier that I have. I have one in every room in my house. It just makes the air quality so much better.
Jeffrey
That's a weird thing to borrow too.
Danny
Okay, it is, but they asked to borrow it, and like I said, I don't like confrontation. So I was like, okay, well, if.
Craig
I saw a guy had one in every room in the house, I'd be like, yo, let me get one of these 10. You know what I'm saying?
Brooke
Does it really make that big of a difference?
Jeffrey
Okay, when you lent it to him, did you tell him when you needed it back?
Danny
No, I didn't.
Craig
That's the problem.
Danny
I figured that he'll use it for a day or two, but every time I confront him about it, he says, oh, let me use it for a couple more days. A couple more days. And it's been a while right now.
Jeffrey
Because you have one room in your house. It's very dry. I hear you.
Brooke
So is it just the humidifiers?
Danny
No, they borrow everything. They borrow my tools. They borrow dishes. They have borrowed my lawn chairs.
Craig
Oh, lawn chairs would be a Good ask.
Jeffrey
Wait, they borrowed your weird things?
Brooke
He borrowed my wife for a week.
Craig
I was giving her back.
Brooke
Yeah.
Jeffrey
Why are you saying yes every time they ask for something?
Danny
Well, here's the thing. These neighbors, like, they live a few houses down. You know, we have game night. I mean, we're close, we go out to restaurants. We have a good relationship. Okay. It's good.
Craig
Oh, so you have been friends. Got it. And you've been neighborly.
Jeffrey
You just need our advice. To what? Call them and set some boundaries here.
Brooke
How can we help you?
Danny
I'm not really worried about what to say. I think I have an idea how to approach it. My problem is I have this thing that happens whenever I get nervous in a tense situation. My voice kind of gets. It gets high, and I can't control it.
Brooke
Your voice? Your voice goes high? Like, high pitched?
Danny
Yeah, it just did it. I'm sorry. It gets high.
Jeffrey
I understand.
Danny
I can't control it, and I really don't want that to happen.
Jeffrey
That's got to be so frustrating. Honestly, it's like, yes. Every time I try to confront somebody or have big emotions, I cry. No matter what my feelings are, it's not the message I want to be sending. So I get where you're coming from. Why are we calling just the wife, though? Not the. He already tried.
Brooke
He tried with the husband, and he's not getting anywhere.
Jeffrey
I'm guessing your voice got real high when you were talking.
Craig
Was that like a quick convo with the husband or how did that go down?
Danny
Well, it didn't work out well because my voice got kind of. Well, it got high and. And the husband started laughing at me. And the really weird part that my friends, we hang out with these guys all the time.
Jeffrey
Oh, God.
Brooke
Okay, gotcha.
Craig
No, they know they can get away with it.
Brooke
So you need advice on how to have your voice not go high when you're asking this lady, Danny, to get your stuff back from her. You wanted to come across strong and powerful.
Craig
Let's get the voice changer, Jeff.
Brooke
Because we'd have to lower her voice also. So.
Jeffrey
I feel for you, man. I do.
Danny
I appreciate it, but I need help to stay firm and stay strong to get my stuff back. I want it back.
Craig
You're one of those people that's like, give me my stuff back. And they're like, not right now. And you're like, okay.
Jeffrey
Alexis is classically good at boundaries. I'll enter the notes I have from my therapist. See, I can help you.
Brooke
And there's a lot of gentlemen out there who have trouble staying firm. So don't worry about that. We will come back with some advice for you.
Craig
Jeff and I talk about this.
Brooke
That's not what I'm talking about.
Jeffrey
Yeah.
Brooke
I hope you're kidding with that because that, that voice is pretty.
Jeffrey
Yeah.
Craig
Wait a minute.
Brooke
Is that a joke?
Danny
I was just having fun there.
Jeffrey
I thought that was actually really funny.
Brooke
Yeah, we'll call that the worst case scenario. We'll come back with our advice for you. Let you make your awkward Tuesday phone call right after this.

It's awkward Tuesday phone call. We're in the middle of an awkward Tuesday phone call with one of our listeners, Craig, who's nervous to ask his neighbor to return some of the items that she's borrowed from his house lately. Thing is, they're actually friends. Yeah, Craig and his wife hang out with this woman and her husband all the time. The thing that's making him nervous is sometimes during tense situations, during conflicts, his voice accidentally gets really high.
Jeffrey
Yeah, he can't control frustrating. That would be so frustrating.
Brooke
Yeah, it already happened when he spoke to the husband about this situation. So now he wants to try again with the wife this time. But how do we help him stop his voice from going crazy? Brooke, what's your advice for Craig here?
Jeffrey
I actually feel you because like I said, I cry at every emotion, even Just intense emotions and so crying right now. No, what. What I do, because it can just really get in the way of things, is I have to go in thinking I'm someone else. It's almost like I'm playing a role, you know? It's almost like I remove myself from the situation. Does that make sense?
Craig
Who are you? Like Gwyneth Paltrow?
Brooke
Yeah. What deep voiced person should he imagine himself being?
Jeffrey
So, I've thought about this. Have you seen the movie Aladdin?
Craig
What?
Brooke
You've seen the movie Aladdin?
Jeffrey
Stop it.
Danny
How about James Earl Jones?
Craig
James.
Brooke
Oh, that's a good one.
Jeffrey
No, no, listen. You need a little more evil than James Earl Jones because you got to be tough. So you need to go in thinking you're Jafar. Okay? You are Jafar. You are setting your boundaries. Like, that's a guy who's good at Boundari.
Craig
Yeah.
Brooke
You're a 70 year old man with a parrot on his shoulder.
Jeffrey
Seriously.
Danny
That's a good one. That's a good one. I agree. That's a good one.
Brooke
He's already trying the scratchiness. Jose, do you have advice?
Craig
I like that. But I don't want you to back down no matter what happens. So if your voice starts getting high, stay strong. You can still be up here and be intimidating. You can still yell at people in a high voice.
Danny
But if he walks away laughing. What? What should I do?
Craig
Yell at him. Don't you walk away from me.
Jeffrey
Well, we're calling them.
Brooke
Oh, I'm scared.
Craig
See?
Jeffrey
Yeah.
Brooke
Not for the reason that you think.
Jeffrey
No. But we're calling the wife, right?
Danny
Yes.
Jeffrey
Yeah.
Danny
Okay.
Brooke
Yeah, okay.
Jeffrey
Okay.
Craig
Don't back down.
Danny
I'll stay strong. I'll stay strong. I'll stay strong.
Brooke
Okay. There you go. See? Good advice from Jose. Never stop talking, even when people watch. So here we go. I'm in the dial. Danny, for you. Your neighbor let you make your awkward Tuesday phone call? We'll step in if we feel like you need help.
Jeffrey
Yeah. Good luck. Don't be embarrassed. Like, weird stuff happens to all of us.
Craig
Yeah.
Danny
I'm just glad you guys are on my side.
Jeffrey
Good for you, man. We got you.
Brooke
You got this. Jafar Agrabah will be yours. Here we go.
Danny
I got it.
Jeffrey
I got a humidifier.
Brooke
That's right.
Craig
It's all about a humidifier.
Brooke
I'm dialing right now.
Unnamed Neighbor
Hello?
Danny
Danny, what's up? It's Craig.
Unnamed Neighbor
Oh, hi, Craig. This is not your normal number. I didn't know it was you. Sorry. How are you?
Danny
I'm doing great.
Unnamed Neighbor
Cool. Oh, Brian and I were just talking about getting together again if you wanted to get your schedule.
Danny
Oh, yeah. Oh, man, we had amazing dinner at Outback the other night. Huh?
Unnamed Neighbor
Said that her onion was. You know what I'm talking about. She said her onion was blooming, like, literally not out of my nose.
Danny
So. So classic.
Unnamed Neighbor
No, yeah, we. We have to definitely go again, but. What's up?
Danny
So, you know when you guys were over here on. On game night last week?
Unnamed Neighbor
Okay. Yeah. Are you okay?
Danny
Yes. You guys, you borrowed a. I. Couch. Sorry, A couch cushion.
Brooke
What?
Unnamed Neighbor
Are you okay?
Danny
Yeah, yeah, yeah, I'm fine. But. But regard to the cushion.
Unnamed Neighbor
Oh, yeah, yeah, sorry. No, we're still testing it because, like, I sat on it and Brian sat on it, but, like, we even had our dog sit on it. But we just. I think we need, like, probably just like, one more week.
Danny
Yeah, look, sorry, that's not gonna work for me. I need it back tonight.
Jeffrey
Yes.
Unnamed Neighbor
Why do you need it tonight? Like, literally?
Danny
Well. Well, because we're going to watch a movie on the couch and I keep sitting in a hole.
Unnamed Neighbor
Can you just, like, watch it in your bed? Like, you guys have a TV in your bedroom, which is way more cozy. Like, I don't get why you would need this pillow back tonight.
Danny
No, no, listen, this needs to stop. We've been letting you borrow so many things. The humidifier, the tools, the cushion, a little corn cob holder.
Unnamed Neighbor
We definitely threw those out, first of all. So I'm sorry, but what?
Danny
You threw them out? Why would you do that?
Unnamed Neighbor
They're crappy. I don't know, but they weren't yours.
Danny
Awkward.
Brooke
Oh, my God.
Craig
Sometimes those things are.
Jeffrey
Dude, Craig, Craig, you're doing amaz. Yeah.
Unnamed Neighbor
What?
Danny
Thank you.
Unnamed Neighbor
Who is who?
Brooke
I think you're referring to us in our. Our voices, Danny. Because we're a radio show called Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning, and you're on it.
Unnamed Neighbor
Oh, my God.
Craig
Good morning.
Jeffrey
You have that man's couch cushion in your house right now?
Brooke
Just one of them.
Unnamed Neighbor
He said we could borrow it. I don't. Like, I'm not in a hole.
Jeffrey
Why would you not just go sit on his couch and try it out? Why would you need to take his cushion?
Unnamed Neighbor
I asked and he said okay, and it was no big deal. And so I didn't think twice about it.
Jeffrey
It is a big deal.
Danny
Yeah.
Jeffrey
I mean, that poor fe can't be on their couch comfortably.
Unnamed Neighbor
It was one pillow. It was one pillow.
Danny
It's been days. And my corn tab holders.
Craig
At least those aren't too Expensive.
Jeffrey
I mean, do you see that there's, like, a pattern here that is a little frustrating, Danny, of you borrowing things and not return. I think that's what he's trying to get at.
Unnamed Neighbor
You're acting like. I'm feeling it, though. Like, no, I'm asking permission for everything, and he's aware that I'm doing it, and he's the one saying yes.
Jeffrey
Yeah, but you're abusing his kindness. You're abusing his, like, neighborliness.
Unnamed Neighbor
We are neighbors. We share things with each other. I would give him anything. He's just never asked to borrow something of mine.
Danny
Okay, well, you always taking mine.
Brooke
And that's the reason that he's called us for help today, Danny, is because Craig has a little bit of an issue with asking for things back. He doesn't?
Jeffrey
Really?
Brooke
Well, yeah. So he was hoping you'd be understanding for, like, why he has a difficult time asking you that.
Jeffrey
Apparently, he asked your husband, and your husband just laughed at him because of his voice. That's not fair.
Unnamed Neighbor
Are we, like, not all adults? I don't. I don't get it.
Brooke
Well, yeah, I think an adult. An adult thing to do would be to honor his request to get his stuff back.
Craig
Yeah.
Jeffrey
You have his humidifier, Danny.
Ryan Seacrest
We know, and a bunch of other.
Danny
Stuff, but one room is very dry.
Unnamed Neighbor
Yeah, I will give back all of the things. And then next time, Craig, you can just say it to my face instead of getting a trashy radio show to call.
Brooke
She did nail us, though. Like, that was. We are pretty trash. Yeah.
Jeffrey
Danny, he did ask you multiple times before you knew we were here. You didn't know.
Brooke
Uh. Oh, Brooke's starting to cry. She's getting emotional now.
Jeffrey
Jafar. Brooke. Jafar.
Craig
Are you mad or are you.
Brooke
You sad?
Jeffrey
No, it's not a fair assessment.
Brooke
Okay, Danny, today. Today we would like you to give him some stuff back.
Unnamed Neighbor
I will give back the stuff today. I will be at your place at 7 o' clock.
Jeffrey
And just so you know, he said really nice things about you and your husband and about what great friends you are.
Unnamed Neighbor
It's just, we are friends, which is why it's so weird. Like, whatever. I just think it's really strange.
Danny
Okay, but the husband laughed at my. He laughed at me.
Brooke
Okay, but what. What would Jafar say in this situation? Craig?
Danny
Yeah. He should not have left. That man walked away and give me my corn holders back.
Craig
That's right.
Danny
That's right.
Craig
Jafar sighted the wrath of Jafar.
Danny
Oh, man.
Jeffrey
You better buy him new corn holders, Danny.
Unnamed Neighbor
I don't even know what's going on anymore. I don't know who Jafar is.
Brooke
All right, I think we got our point across. I think we've achieved what we came to achieve.
Jeffrey
You know what, Craig? You should be really proud of yourself for the way you handled that confrontation. I thought you did great.
Craig
Your voice didn't really peak one.
Unnamed Neighbor
Oh my God.
Danny
Thank you.
Brooke
Nailed it.
Craig
That's our Jafar.
Jeffrey
Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning.

In this engaging episode of Brooke and Jeffrey: Second Date Update, hosts Brooke and Jeffrey tackle the all-too-relatable predicament of dealing with difficult neighbors. Titled "Awkward Tuesday: False Setto Freakout," the episode delves into the challenges of setting boundaries with friends who overstep, especially when anxiety complicates confrontations.
The episode centers around a listener named Craig, who reaches out with a common yet sensitive issue: his neighbors have a habit of borrowing his belongings and not returning them. Items like humidifiers, tools, dishes, and even lawn chairs have been left unreturned, causing frustration for Craig. Adding to his predicament, Craig experiences an involuntary high-pitched voice when he gets nervous, making confrontations even more daunting.
Notable Quote:
Danny (Craig): "I have this thing that happens whenever I get nervous in a tense situation. My voice kind of gets. It gets high, and I can’t control it."
[05:50]
Craig admits his difficulty with confrontation stems from anxiety, which manifests physically by raising his voice unexpectedly during stressful interactions. This has led to awkward and ineffective attempts at addressing the issue with his neighbors, resulting in further tension and embarrassment.
Notable Quote:
Danny (Craig): "I really need help to stay firm and stay strong to get my stuff back. I want it back."
[07:50]
Brooke and Jeffrey, along with their co-host Craig, provide empathetic and practical advice to help Craig manage his anxiety and effectively communicate with his neighbors.
Role-Playing Technique:
Jeffrey suggests that Craig imagine himself as a strong, authoritative character to maintain composure during the conversation.
Notable Quote:
Jeffrey: "What you do, because it can just really get in the way of things, is I have to go in thinking I'm someone else. It's almost like I'm playing a role, you know?"
[11:47]
Adopting a Persona:
Brooke recommends Craig embodying Jafar from Aladdin, a character known for setting firm boundaries, to bolster his confidence.
Notable Quote:
Brooke: "You need to go in thinking you're Jafar. Okay? You are Jafar. You are setting your boundaries."
[12:25]
Staying Firm:
Craig emphasizes the importance of not backing down, even if his voice begins to rise, encouraging Craig to remain assertive.
Notable Quote:
Craig: "Don't back down. You can still be intimidating. You can still yell at people in a high voice."
[12:51]
Armed with the advice, Craig decides to make the crucial phone call to his neighbor. Adopting the Jafar persona, he confronts his neighbors about the overdue return of his borrowed items. Despite initial resistance and awkward responses, Craig remains steadfast and assertive, successfully conveying his message.
Notable Quote:
Danny (Craig): "No, no, listen, this needs to stop. We've been letting you borrow so many things. The humidifier, the tools, the cushion, a little corn cob holder."
[15:09]
The conversation culminates with the neighbor admitting their oversight and agreeing to return all borrowed items promptly. Brooke and Jeffrey commend Craig for his courage and effective handling of the situation, highlighting the importance of setting boundaries and addressing issues directly.
