Brooke
Ooh, Tuesday's your new favorite day of the week. I love that. Tacos and Awkward Tuesday. Welcome to the Brooke and Jeffrey, of course, Second Date podcast. But today is always a little special with our Awkward Tuesday phone call. And all I'll say is one of our listeners dabbled in workplace romance and it definitely backfired, you know, for me. Backfired. Yeah. So, hey, thank you for all the comments on last week's Awkward Tuesday. We got so many. Yeah, you guys love it and it makes me so happy. Yes, Sarah Irby wrote. Oh, my God. Thanks for posting this so fast. I heard the first half of My Way to Work yesterday and was excited to hear the rest of it, which I always forget that a lot of podcast listeners listen to part of us on the radio on their commute.
Dave
They finish us on the podcast.
Brooke
Yeah, it's really great. Matt Bright just simply said that was absolutely brilliant. Brutal. Which I think is a compliment. I think that describes a lot of the calls we have. Brutal. So always keep your comments coming. We love it, whether that's on the podcast or on our socials. BrookeandJeffrey. And don't forget to order your limited edition second date update. Merch for a Cause. You can get it now. The link is in the show notes. And let's get this awkward started.
Jeffrey
It's awkward.
Brooke
It's Tuesday.
Jeffrey
It's Awkward Tuesday. Phone call for you years. I would always get the best office gossip from the head of our HR department.
Brooke
What?
Jeffrey
Oh, she would tell me all of the dirt about everybody here.
Dave
I know exactly who you're talking about.
Jeffrey
I'm not sure why they let her go.
Dave
Hold on, Brooke.
Brooke
Wait. She gave you dirt?
Dave
Oh, she's giving me dirt, too.
Jeffrey
She never talked about, but apparently she.
Brooke
Was talking about me. To both of you.
Jeffrey
She just like the boys. Oh, I know some stuff about you. But look, certain work issues are too awkward to bring to hr. Then you got to take the elevator all the way down to the basement of morality.
Brooke
Let's be honest, HR is only there to protect the company, not protect you.
Jeffrey
And we're unable to protect anybody. That's why you can always tell us whatever's going on in your life. Which is why our listener, Dave, has reached out with a work problem too scandalous for HR I love this. Dave. Welcome to the show.
Dave
Thank you.
Brooke
Guys, are you second guessing your decision after that intro?
Dave
Well, I have a really awkward situation and I. I really did want to do it on the radio, but I don't know what else to do.
Brooke
Okay, so here we go.
Jeffrey
Whatever dirt that you want to share, we promise we won't share it with anybody else.
Brooke
Oh, no, I'm telling everybody, but I don't know where your office is, so it's fine.
Jeffrey
Okay. Yeah.
Dave
Okay.
Jeffrey
Well, what's going on?
Dave
So not too long ago, I was at a company and I ended up having a fling with one of my younger co workers.
Nicole
Uh.
Brooke
Oh, but co workers is key. It wasn't like somebody. You weren't the boss.
Dave
Well, I was her boss.
Brooke
Oh, okay. That's an important detail. That's like a power dynamic you can't do. You can't.
Jeffrey
That's exactly what Brooke tried to do with me when I first started working here on the show as a promotions kid.
Brooke
I never tried to hook up with you. And I still. Still? Yeah, she just did have zero interest. Remember?
Jeffrey
HR told me everything. I know.
Dave
HR told you you were taking advantage of my Brooks.
Jeffrey
So anyway, that's an awkward situation for you to be in, Dave. You're with one of your subordinates, but.
Brooke
You did it to yourself.
Dave
Yeah, and unlike Brooke, she liked me.
Brooke
Okay, okay, listen, buddy, just because she likes you, you still can't do it. You're the boss. Yeah, I know.
Dave
So. Yes. So we were keeping the DL, keeping everything on the down low, because like you guys are saying, we could both get in trouble.
Brooke
Yeah, okay. Yeah.
Dave
But then we got to the point where we wanted to bring it out into the public, let everybody know and stop sneaking around.
Brooke
Okay.
Dave
I felt that way. She felt that way. Wait, so you were both on the.
Jeffrey
Same page about this?
Dave
Yes. Oh, yeah.
Jeffrey
Okay.
Brooke
Okay, well, that's good.
Dave
Yeah, but we felt like if we did that, our co workers would be really weirded out by it. Especially if they find out how long it was going on before we told them.
Brooke
You don't gotta honest about all the details, man.
Dave
So we were talking, she gave me this idea. It's like if we didn't work together, we wouldn't have a problem.
Brooke
Oh, okay. I mean, that's true.
Dave
So I thought, yeah, she's right. And I thought, okay, what I'm gonna do is I have more job experience. I could get a job more easily than she could. So I put in my notice and I quit. You should have just fired her.
Brooke
You guys he should have gotten another job before you put in your notice.
Jeffrey
Everybody knows anybody.
Dave
I was able to get another job o less money, but I did get.
Brooke
Another job for love. So it was worth it, is what you're saying.
Dave
Well, so this is the part where it might not have been worth it, because ever since I quit, the relationship's gone kind of cold. I mean, it was really hot and heavy for the first month, but now it seems like she's distancing herself from me.
Brooke
Wait, how long were you dating before you quit your job?
Dave
A month.
Brooke
That's gotta be together.
Dave
You have to know that.
Jeffrey
Yeah, well, could it be that forbidden fruit thing where it's like, since you're doing it and sneaking around, it's kind of fun and exciting, but now that it's out in the open, it's lost its luster?
Dave
I have no idea. Because she won't respond to my text, she won't respond to my calls. No explanation. And meanwhile, I'm over here like, what the hell? I went and quit my job for you, and now I'm out in the cold.
Brooke
I hate to say it, but it sounds kind of like she broke up with you. Yeah, it's gonna be a couple months. I feel like that's the point where, you know if you're into someone or not. And she probably feels bad. It's not like she wanted you to quit your job.
Dave
Yeah, but the thing was, she was all for it when I said I was going to do it.
Brooke
I know, but, like, that's a lot of pressure on her for you to bring it up if she wasn't fairly sure on the relationship, you know?
Dave
Well, that was, to quote Adam Sandler, that's information I needed to know yesterday.
Brooke
Okay, maybe it's a quarter Adam Sandler. I not.
Jeffrey
You're just looking for an explanation.
Dave
I just want to know what's going on. That's it.
Jeffrey
That's fair. And it says in your email here that you're only 46 years older than her, so hopefully that's. I'm just kidding. I'm just kidding, you guys. It's not like that. It's not like he thinks they hooked up.
Dave
No, no, I don't have dementia. No, I know what's going on.
Brooke
Now I'm worried. Is there a huge age gap between you two?
Dave
12 years. She's 12 years younger than us.
Jeffrey
Gonna be a lot worse. It is cr. Crazy that she agreed to, like, tell him, hey, go quit your job and we can be together. And then a month later, she's out.
Brooke
Crazy that after a month, he's like, I'm gonna quit my job for you. Like, what is she supposed to say? I would feel backed into a corner.
Jeffrey
We weren't there, Brooke. I don't know. If she reacted like that, that would.
Brooke
Just be my reaction. I just.
Jeffrey
I would be like, let's come back. We're gonna let Dave call his ex?
Brooke
Well, we don't know for sure.
Jeffrey
Into his eyes, what does he say? His ex. Coworker.
Dave
At least.
Jeffrey
We'Ll see if she picks up and has an explanation for him for why she told him, go ahead, quit your job, and then ghosted again.
Brooke
Not on her. You can't put that on her.
Jeffrey
The facts are she's ghosting.
Brooke
That's true. Yeah.
Jeffrey
So let's see if she has anything to say about it when we come back and do your awkward Tuesday phone call right after this. It's awkward.
Brooke
It's Tuesday.
Jeffrey
It's awkward. Tuesday phone call. We always ask the question, what are you willing to do for true love?
Brooke
Oh, yeah.
Jeffrey
Well, our listener, Dave, was willing to quit his job for it, literally.
Dave
Wow.
Jeffrey
He was dating one of his younger subordinates in secret until they both agreed. If we want to keep this thing going and go public with it, the best bet is for Dave to leave the company and get himself a new job.
Brooke
Yeah. Yeah.
Jeffrey
Cuts out all the awkwardness. It's funny how normal you read that, but yeah, someone literally quit his career.
Brooke
It wouldn't be that crazy if it wasn't after a month of talking.
Jeffrey
Yeah, that is the crazy.
Brooke
It wouldn't be crazy if it was dating a year.
Jeffrey
They say when you know, you know. But the weird part is, a month after he quit, she suddenly ghosted completely with no response, no explanation for where she's gone. So understandably, Dave is feeling confused and a little left out in the lurch, which is why he wants our help to call her now. We need to give him some advice. Jose, what do you think Dave needs to keep in mind? Saying goodbye.
Brooke
Oh, like you're gonna be the one that is okay with the breakup.
Dave
You tell her you haven't talked to me for months, and I hate the.
Jeffrey
Feeling like I'm talking to myself or I'm bugging somebody.
Dave
So you just say goodbye. Thank you for the wonderful memories. I can take a hint. And I wish you the best.
Brooke
Are you just saying this from personal experience, that they all come crawling down every time you say, I'll give it mine?
Jeffrey
They go, well, wait a minute. Okay, take back the power by saying Goodbye first.
Dave
Well, I don't want to say goodbye without knowing what happen, okay?
Jeffrey
It is very risky. You are right, because he does want an explanation. So maybe, Brooke, you have some advice on that front?
Brooke
I mean, closure's always hard to come by. Dave, I really think that no matter what you do to get someone to open up, you need to go in with compliments. You need to say how you felt about her and what a great time you had together. Hey there, doll face. Not that. Not that. Okay, I'm kidding.
Dave
I'm kidding.
Brooke
And then maybe just say, you know, I was hoping for more time with you. Is there something I can do to make things better?
Jeffrey
Oh, make things better. I think Brooke is wanting a compliment from you, Dave, so can you just practice on her first?
Dave
You have a lovely voice, Brooke.
Ryan Seacrest
There you go.
Dave
Wow.
Jeffrey
Almost believed it. So use some compliments to soften her up a little bit and say goodbye before she can say goodbye. Yeah, take back her power.
Dave
You're really pretty.
Ryan Seacrest
Bye.
Jeffrey
Hopefully that helps. But I'm gonna dial your X coworker. What's her name, by the way?
Brooke
Oh, yeah, that's right.
Dave
Nicole.
Jeffrey
Okay. All right, let me write that down. Nicole. I'm dialing Nicole's number. And we will step away, let you make your awkward Tuesday phone call. Here we go.
Nicole
Hello?
Dave
Hey. Hey, it's me.
Nicole
I'm sorry, what? Who's this?
Dave
It's. It's Dave. It's me, Dave.
Nicole
Okay. Hi.
Dave
Wow. I wish you were. I wish you were a little more excited to hear from me because I haven't heard from you in a while. You know, I miss talking to you. I miss hearing your lovely voice.
Jeffrey
Compliment.
Nicole
Okay. Hi. How are you doing?
Dave
Well, funny you should ask. That's why I'm calling, to see how we're doing. Because you haven't answered my calls, you haven't answered my texts, and I literally quit my job so we could be together. So I just. I just want to know what's going on.
Nicole
Yeah, I know. And thank you so much for doing that, by the way. That was really sweet, and I promise I'll never forget that.
Dave
Well, I mean, I did it because you were just a fantastic person, and I think we were fantastic together. I've never. I've never been with somebody as beautiful and smart as you are.
Nicole
Well, thank you so much for sharing.
Dave
I mean, you know, if you're. If you're too uncomfortable to do this on the phone, I can come into the office, we can sit down, we can talk in person, you know.
Nicole
No, I I wouldn't do that. And I don't think the supervisor would let you, so I feel like.
Dave
What do you mean the supervisor won't let me? I mean, I was pretty at that place.
Nicole
I think there have been some changes in staff here, and that would be very awkward and uncomfortable.
Dave
What kind. What kind of changes are you talking about? You're being a little vague here. What's going on over there?
Nicole
Okay, well, I didn't know how to tell you this, but after you quit, they came to me and they offered me a promotion, and it's to your job.
Dave
Oh, my. Wait, what? You took my old job?
Nicole
I mean, I make a lot more money now and.
Dave
Yeah, I'm sure you would, because I know how much I made and I know how much you made.
Nicole
I mean, so it was a bit hard for me to say no, and you weren't there, so I.
Dave
Of course I wasn't there. We agreed that I quit. Awkward.
Brooke
Thank God they were so into it.
Nicole
Nicole, who is this? What's going on? I not understand what's going on right now.
Brooke
It's kind of like a conference call.
Jeffrey
Yeah, a conference call with a whole morning show called Brooke and Jeffrey in the Morning.
Nicole
I'm. I'm feeling a bit ambushed right now.
Brooke
You don't need to. You don't need to.
Dave
By the way, congrats on your promotion.
Jeffrey
Yeah, that's good news.
Dave
But don't congratulate her on taking my job. Well, did you plan on this? Is this why you got me to quit? So you could have my job?
Nicole
No, I. I'm sorry. I am just so shocked. I didn't know that this was gonna happen.
Brooke
No, totally.
Ryan Seacrest
Yeah.
Nicole
It was a great opportunity to pass it up and. Oh, who would you decided to quit and I took it.
Dave
You guys didn't decide together. But you were the one who told me to leave. You said it would be better for both of us if I did that.
Brooke
It was. It was better for her.
Nicole
Yeah, he brought that up to me. I never went to him and said you should quit your job.
Brooke
Well, see.
Dave
No, no, no, no. You brought that up to me and I agreed.
Nicole
No, I told you that I was just as shocked as you. They came to me. I did not go to them and ask for your.
Brooke
Really?
Dave
I'm going to take your word now?
Brooke
What? She didn't lie to you about it? Doesn't sound like she lied to you about anything.
Dave
No, that she's shocked. I. Hard to find it hard to believe that she's shocked.
Nicole
You know, Dave, I really don't want to be rude, but everyone at work really likes me more than you. I reinstated Fun Fridays. You took that away.
Jeffrey
Fun Friday.
Nicole
Everyone's really happy with the job that I'm doing right now, so I don't need you to yell at me. And especially on a radio show. I'm sorry that that happened, but from my perspective, you decided to quit. And they came to me.
Jeffrey
Okay, wow.
Brooke
I mean, it does kind of sound like you. You made your own grave there, Dave.
Dave
Yeah, and she dug it for me.
Brooke
Did she?
Dave
Yeah, she. Yeah, she did.
Brooke
Like, there was no job before you left. It's not like she knew that that was gonna happen.
Dave
She flirted and got him to the cemetery.
Brooke
He went to the boss and quit. Yeah, and he was dating someone that was. You know, you can't do that.
Jeffrey
But here's the question.
Brooke
Boss that, Date somebody below you.
Jeffrey
Okay, but here's the question that we don't have that I think Dave wants from Nicole. Is that why did you ghost him? Like, why did you break off the romantic relationship with no explanation?
Nicole
So I would say the majority of the things that we talked about had to do with work, and it was something that I couldn't talk to him about anymore.
Jeffrey
Work is what bonded you together. So once that was taken away, there was nothing left to keep the relationship you going.
Brooke
You don't have faith that he would have celebrated your big job promotion to his job?
Dave
Yeah. Yeah. Maybe you could have taken me out to dinner. With your big raise? It's kind of his money.
Jeffrey
Yeah.
Nicole
Look, I feel really bad. Maybe if you're up for it, we could get together and have a coffee, and you could give me some tips on the job since you've done it before.
Dave
Oh, yes. I would love to come in and help you get more ahead.
Brooke
Come on. You said you cared about her. Someone had to take your job. It might as well be somebody that you cared about. Why can't you root for her?
Dave
Somebody who puts a knife in my back. Sure.
Brooke
I'm too Nicole. It was a loving stab in the back, if anything.
Jeffrey
Okay.
Brooke
Congratulations, Nicole, on your big promotion.
Jeffrey
Yeah, and cool on Fun Fridays, too.
Brooke
Really good idea.
Nicole
Thank you. I don't know what else to say. This has been an interesting.
Dave
You know what? Maybe I should go in and talk to hr you know, maybe let him.
Jeffrey
Know what we were doing.
Brooke
Now you're sounding kind of petty, my friend.
Jeffrey
Yeah, you're gone.
Dave
Oh, yes. You can call me Tom.
Jeffrey
Okay. Oh, Tom petty.
Ryan Seacrest
Oh, okay.
Jeffrey
12 years older. Dave, I'm sorry. This played out how it did. And Nicole, I know you're a supervisor now and you probably know this, but one rule is do not date any of your subordinates.
Brooke
I don't think she's gonna make usually.
Dave
Doesn'T work out very well.
Nicole
You know what? Trust me, I will not. I have a really hard job now with extra responsibilities and I really need.
Brooke
To focus on date the CEO Next Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning.

Podcast Summary: Brooke and Jeffrey: Second Date Update
Episode Title: Awkward Tuesday: I Quit For You
Release Date: March 25, 2025
Host/Author: iHeartPodcasts
In the episode titled "Awkward Tuesday: I Quit For You," hosts Brooke and Jeffrey delve into a listener's tumultuous experience with workplace romance and its unforeseen consequences. The segment, a staple of the Brooke and Jeffrey: Second Date Update podcast, aims to entertain while shedding light on the complexities of dating dynamics in professional settings.
The episode centers around Dave, a listener who reached out with an "awkward situation too scandalous for HR" ([04:42]). Dave confided in Brooke and Jeffrey about his romantic involvement with a younger subordinate at his workplace. This relationship introduced a significant power imbalance, as Dave was her boss—a dynamic fraught with potential complications.
Dave explained, "I was her boss" ([05:25]), highlighting the inherent issues in their relationship. Despite the risks, both parties decided to keep their romance discreet to avoid professional repercussions. However, as the relationship became more serious, Dave felt compelled to bring it into the open. Seeking Brooke and Jeffrey's advice, he took the bold step of quitting his job, believing it would resolve the awkwardness and solidify their relationship.
Brooke and Jeffrey weighed in on Dave's decision, emphasizing the pitfalls of workplace romances, especially those involving supervisors and subordinates. Brooke remarked, "HR is only there to protect the company, not protect you" ([04:26]), suggesting that internal company resources might not always safeguard personal interests in such scenarios.
Jeffrey added, "You do it to yourself," ([05:56]) pointing out the repercussions of engaging in relationships that blur professional lines. He further explained, "Everybody knows anybody" ([04:01]), underscoring how personal decisions can ripple through a workplace, affecting reputations and relationships.
The hosts contemplated whether Dave's decision to quit was premature. Brooke questioned, "How long were you dating before you quit your job?" ([07:38]), prompting a discussion on the sustainability and timing of his actions. Jeffrey suggested that the allure of "forbidden fruit" may have initially fueled the relationship but waned once it was exposed, stating, "Once that was taken away, there was nothing left to keep the relationship going" ([18:10]).
Determined to help Dave find clarity, Brooke and Jeffrey orchestrated an "Awkward Tuesday Phone Call" to Nicole, Dave's former subordinate and romantic interest. The call, starting at [12:55], was an attempt to uncover the reasons behind Nicole's sudden ghosting after Dave's resignation.
During the conversation, Nicole revealed a surprising twist: she had been offered Dave's former position and accepted it, leading to her departure from the company ([14:55]). Dave grappled with this revelation, expressing feelings of betrayal: "I went and quit my job for you, and now I'm out in the cold" ([07:38]).
Nicole maintained her stance, asserting that she did not initiate the proposal for Dave to quit and was equally shocked by the unfolding events. She stated, "I did not go to them and ask for your job" ([16:34]), emphasizing that her acceptance of the promotion was a company decision rather than a direct consequence of their relationship.
The awkward phone call concluded without definitive reconciliation. Nicole apologized for the confusion and the unintended consequences of her promotion, while Dave was left to process the complex interplay of personal and professional decisions. Brooke and Jeffrey highlighted the importance of maintaining clear boundaries in workplace relationships to prevent such entanglements.
Key takeaways from Dave's experience include:
Professional Boundaries: Engaging in romantic relationships with subordinates can lead to significant personal and professional complications.
Impact of Power Dynamics: The inherent imbalance in supervisory relationships necessitates caution to avoid perceived or actual exploitation.
Importance of Closure: Seeking understanding and closure, even when outcomes are unfavorable, is crucial for personal growth and healing.
"Awkward Tuesday: I Quit For You" offers listeners a candid exploration of the challenges inherent in workplace relationships. Through Dave's story, Brooke and Jeffrey illuminate the potential fallout from intertwining professional responsibilities with personal affections. The episode serves as both entertainment and a cautionary tale, emphasizing the need for transparency, professional integrity, and the maintenance of clear boundaries in all aspects of life.
