Kayla

Jose
Hey, and for everybody that subscribes, we truly appreciate it. I know that it may not feel like that makes a difference, but it really does make a difference.
Brooke
I go through our subscription list every day and I kiss you all on the forehead good night. Every day. Every single night.
Jose
That is so precious.
Brooke
Every single one of you.
Jose
So precious.
Brooke
Hey, by the way, the guy user 01444114, your forehead's a little salty. Thank you.
Jose
Yeah. So please like and subscribe. We got a brand new Awkward Tuesday phone call for you today. And I know this one struck a chord with Jeffrey because it has to do with the overbearing mother. Oh, my God. There's no mother more overbearing than his. Yeah, but before we get to that, let's see some comments here. What do you got, Alexa? Yeah. Hallie Cruz said, hey, guys, I'm a dog groomer, and I list you guys every day. It helps me stay calm when I have a crazy dog on the table. Love you.
Brooke
Oh, my goodness. That's so sweet. Does our show calm the dogs down or make them, like, nippy? I don't know.
Jose
I'm scared if she has a reaction to us talking and accidentally hoop shaves.
Brooke
The dog in the wrong way.
Jose
You know, she just got to do the whole thing. Yeah, you got to act like it's on purpose.
Brooke
Now you got a ball dog.
Jose
There we go. All right, let's get this second. Oh, nope. Awkward Tuesday. That's what we're doing. Brand new starts right now.
Brooke
Some mothers can be a little overbearing. Oh, yeah. Like, maybe when you turn 21, they set up a secret J date profile to find you a nice Jewish wife without telling you about it. Next thing you know, Suddenly you're getting DMs from some yenta at the synagogue trying to send you unsolicited Mandelbread and a Ziploc of her homemade rugula when you never asked your mom for help in the first place. Place.
Jose
Yeah, yeah, that's traumatic.
Brooke
Mandelbread is good. Oh, okay.
Jose
It's okay.
Brooke
Anyway, one of our listeners came across a mother that was just like that. And what was said to her is either going to be the biggest misunderstanding ever or the most awkward roommate conversation of all time.
Jose
Oh, no.
Brooke
You're going to hear it in your brand new awkward Tuesday phone call right after this. It's awkward.
Jose
It's Tuesday.
Brooke
It's awkward Tuesday phone call. There's certain events that always seem to create drama.
Jose
Ooh, yes.
Brooke
Where guaranteed by the end, somebody is probably going to be crying in a bathroom or fist fighting out in the parking lot. Okay, we're talking bachelor bachelorette parties, Thanksgiving dinners, and of course, Brooks. And out of wedlock, baby showers.
Jose
Wait, what?
Brooke
Always somebody's crying at the end of those.
Jose
Did I throw for other people?
Brooke
Yeah, sure. But you don't normally expect to find drama while attending your parents work event.
Jose
What? Whoa, that sounds boring.
Brooke
Yeah, apparently not, cuz that's what happened to one of our listeners, Kayla. And now she needs our help with a little awkward Tuesday phone call. Kayla, welcome to the show.
Aaron
Hi. Thanks for having me.
Jose
Oh my gosh, I can't wait to hear if you're the starter of the drama or if it's somebody else's fault. Why'd you go in the first place? It's a good question.
Brooke
That's true. The fact that you even still talk to your parents is just impressive. But tell us, what is this work event that you wound up at somehow?
Aaron
Okay, so recently I went to a work event that my dad's company was throwing.
Jose
Wait, does your dad own the company? Sorry, maybe I'm reading that wrong.
Aaron
Yeah, yeah, my dad owns the company.
Jose
Okay. Yeah. And you can't be part of it and have nepotism if you're not there.
Aaron
I'm expected to go. So they have this big like family day picnic for the whole company.
Brooke
I mean, cute. Cute.
Aaron
Yeah. So I'm there with my parents and they're talking with some of my dad's co workers. And of course they do it all old people do. They show each other photos of their kids.
Jose
I mean, young parents do that too, but fine.
Brooke
Well, yeah, once you reach a certain.
Jose
Age, once you have kids, you want to show them off.
Brooke
Well, yeah, if you're proud of them, sure. Not everybody is. Okay, so they're showing pictures of kids.
Aaron
Yeah. And there was this one woman there and she's showing me a picture of her son and she's saying, oh, he's so cute.
Jose
Right.
Aaron
And he's your age and single, if you're interested.
Brooke
Oh yeah. Parents love to do that. Always.
Aaron
It took everything in my power not to react because I recognized him.
Brooke
In a good way or a bad way? Yeah.
Aaron
Well, her son has been dating my roommate for over a year now.
Jose
Wait, what year Then why has he.
Brooke
Told his mom about her?
Jose
Yeah, why is she trying to set him up if he's in a committed relationship?
Aaron
I don't know. So, like, I kind of hinted to her, like, oh, wow, like, he's really handsome. It's hard to imagine. No girl has snatched him up. And the woman says to me, well, he was in a relationship, but he broke up with her six months ago.
Jose
So what?
Aaron
Like, clearly, he's been telling his parents something, but he's been lying to them. He's been telling them something that's not true.
Jose
And you're sure he's dating your roommate? Like, he's been over in the past six months?
Kayla
Yeah.
Brooke
No, that's actually a good question.
Aaron
Absolutely. He's my roommate. Like, I know what he looks like.
Brooke
Okay, hold on. Not to, like, defend this guy, but I have overbearing parents, and I definitely don't tell them everything about my personal life.
Jose
You tell them anything? I don't tell my mom if I'm dating someone until it's, like, years in. Yeah. Oh, my God. I usually introduce him on the second date.
Brooke
Oh, God. Yeah. Especially not with my dating life. So he may have a reason for keeping that information from his parents.
Aaron
Yeah, I don't know.
Jose
I mean, I think Jeff might be onto something, because it could also be, what if the mom hated your roommate, and so he just lied and said, oh, we broke up, so we didn't have to hear her complain anymore.
Brooke
Did she seem like a hateful woman when you were talking to her?
Jose
Yeah.
Aaron
No, no. She seemed totally nice. And she's obviously trying to set up her son.
Brooke
Yeah, that. That is the keystone mark of a hateful person trying to take over their son's love life.
Jose
Jeff doesn't have any issues.
Brooke
I'm not speaking from personal experience here. I'm just saying. Yeah, maybe she hates her son. Could be.
Jose
So, wait, so did you tell your roommate about this?
Aaron
Not yet. I got his number from her phone, and I feel like I need to talk to him first and be like, why do your parents think that you're single right now? Like, what's going on?
Brooke
And you didn't bring it up to his mother?
Aaron
No, because, like, I. Again, I don't know what's going on, but I feel like everybody should be on the same page. And I'm put in this really awkward position of knowing but not knowing what to do.
Brooke
That is a weird position.
Jose
And what's your relationship like with your roommate's boyfriend?
Aaron
I mean, like, we don't hang out a Lot. But he's at our place, obviously, so I see him, and we've had some good times together, but obviously this is just a really, like, sticky situation.
Jose
Yeah.
Brooke
Yeah. And so the advice that you're looking to get before you make your call to the boyfriend, it sounds like, what. What are you wanting to hear from us?
Aaron
I guess, like, how do I confront him? Being like, your mom told me that you said you were single, but I know you're dating my roommate.
Jose
Yeah. I mean, that does come across as a little accusatory right off the bat. Right?
Brooke
Yeah. You kind of just want to put him on the spot and see what he has to say, how he defends himself.
Aaron
Well, exactly.
Brooke
Sounded a little harsh.
Jose
Yeah.
Brooke
Yeah.
Kayla
Like.
Brooke
But you know what I mean, Put him on a pedestal. We'll put them somewhere.
Kayla
Yeah.
Brooke
We're going to do something. We're going to do something with it before. First, we're going to give you our advice, though, right? If we come back and let you make your offer. Awkward Tuesday phone call to figure out what's really going on with your roommate's boyfriend right after this. Hold on. It's awkward.
Aaron
It's Tuesday.
Brooke
It's Awkward Tuesday phone call. As a woman, I imagine it would be the ultimate compliment when an older lady comes up to you in public and says, hey, you seem nice and desperate enough to date my single son. How about it? No, I feel like that happened to you all the time, Brooke.
Jose
It didn't.
Brooke
You didn't seem nice enough.
Jose
No, I don't think I've ever been nice enough for somebody's son.
Brooke
But will you do this for your son, though?
Jose
I'll just tell you, the only reason I don't think it's a compliment is because everyone that my mom has ever thought was cute was. Yeah, it's unlike. We don't need to lead with personality, mom.
Brooke
Well, that's the situation that one of our listeners, Kayla, found herself in recently. And it would have been flattering, except she knew the guy from the photo that the lady was showing her. Yeah, it's a guy who's currently dating her roommate and has been for over a year.
Jose
Yeah, they're, like, in a real relationship.
Brooke
But guns just get smaller. The mom's told her no, he's single and he has been for months. Yeah, so that's a giant red flag because obviously he's not. And she never told the mom that day about it. Never brought it up to her roommate either. Instead, she's turned to the most trusted source on the entire planet. A radio show named Brooke and Jeffrey in the Morning.
Jose
That's right.
Brooke
To help her.
Jose
Can we just applaud her, too, for not blowing things out of proportion before she gets an answer from the boyfriend? Like, that's what she's doing right now.
Brooke
Dude, what is that?
Aaron
Thank you.
Brooke
Hopefully we have some decent advice for you. Brooke, do you have anything to.
Jose
Okay, listen, this is what you need to do. When Call him. Be like, oh, my God, I have the funniest story to tell you. I ran into your mom, and she tried to set me up on a date with you.
Brooke
Okay.
Jose
You know what I'm saying?
Aaron
I don't know. I just feel so awkward, like. And I've never really talked to him on the phone before, so.
Jose
I know you're like, alexis, phone calls are hard.
Brooke
But I think there's some merit to that. If you're really nice to him, it'll make him put his guard down.
Aaron
I'm definitely gonna be nice.
Brooke
Okay.
Jose
We don't even know that he's in the wrong.
Brooke
That's a good point. I think he's in the wrong already. That's true.
Jose
I think she's just scared of silence. Like Alexis would be on the phone.
Brooke
Yeah, no, you. You need the silence because then it forces him to talk. Embrace the silence. And if all else fails, threaten to release his nude photos.
Jose
That is against the law.
Brooke
It's last resort is what I'm saying. But I'm gonna dial this guy's number. Have we even learned his name yet?
Aaron
His name's Aaron.
Brooke
Okay, Aaron. Scumbag Aaron.
Jose
Let's give him a scumbag.
Brooke
Potentially scumbag. Yes. Thank you.
Jose
Alleged potential scumbag thinks he's actually a good guy. I think he's fine.
Brooke
Yeah, you think all of them are. Okay, here we go. I'm going to dial it, and we're going to step away, let you make your awkward Tuesday phone call. We'll jump in if you feel like you need a little help. Okay, Kayla?
Aaron
Okay. Okay.
Brooke
Okay. You got this. Here we go.
Kayla
Hello?
Aaron
Hey, Erin, this is Kayla. How are you?
Brooke
Oh.
Kayla
Hey, Kayla. What's up? What's going on?
Aaron
I just. Something kind of funny happened the other day, and I just. I just wanted to ask you about Felt. Okay. Do you have a minute?
Kayla
Yeah. Is everything okay? I mean, it's kind of odd for you to call me out of the blue.
Aaron
Yeah, I know, I know. I normally just, like, see you, but I just. I had to ask you something privately, so. Yeah, if you just. If you have a minute, can I just ask you something real fast.
Kayla
I mean, sure. What. What's up? What's up?
Aaron
Okay, so the other day, my dad's company had a. Had a party and I ended up your mom there, and she. She showed me a photo of you and she's like, oh, my son is single. Which was just really weird because I know you've been obviously with my roommate. So I. I just wanted to like, ask you what was going on. Like, does. Does your mom think that you're single or is that just like a mistake or something?
Kayla
So this is really funny you even asked that. I mean, my mom found out she was going to your parents party, right? And I was like, another daughter. She's really cute. And my mom, she was like, well, you should date her. I mean, she's better than who you're dating.
Aaron
Okay, well, obviously that's not true, but.
Kayla
Okay, well, I mean, it is true, but anyways, I was like, that would be weird, mom. Yeah, and she's not, you know. Well, you've met my mom. She's like, let me try, let me try. Let me. I'll talk to her. Let me try. And I'm like, it's not the worst idea, right? So I was like, okay, yeah, sure.
Aaron
Wait, so hold on. I'm trying to wrap my brain around this. You are with my roommate. But you told your mom it was fine to tell me you were single.
Kayla
Yeah, and my mom was. She's all about it. She's like, oh, yeah, I like tools and, you know, you've met my mom. She's very. Yeah. So she. Yeah.
Aaron
Sorry, I'm. I'm just. I'm. I'm having trouble understanding. Why?
Kayla
Come on. I mean, is it really that crazy?
Aaron
What? Is what crazy?
Kayla
I mean, you and me, I mean, that's not so crazy, right?
Aaron
Are you.
Kayla
Listen, now that I'm serious right now.
Brooke
Yeah.
Kayla
I mean, what do you think?
Aaron
Oh, what do you mean, what do I think? You're with my roommate.
Kayla
Temporarily.
Jose
Oh.
Kayla
I mean, listen, it could be you and me. I mean, we. We get along and then. And you're not as messy as her and you know, listen, your lease is up in three months and I figured, well, you could just move out, get your own place, and then we can start dating on the, you know, on the down low.
Aaron
Awkward.
Jose
What?
Brooke
Wow, you have it all planned out.
Jose
This is so creepy.
Brooke
Sorry, I didn't. I hit the awkward before I heard her answer. No, I should have given her a chance.
Kayla
What is going on?
Brooke
Alexis? You're right. He is a Good guy.
Jose
I didn't know he was a cheater. Well, I didn't see that coming.
Brooke
Alexis, I got a good feeling about this.
Jose
Yeah, he's trying to cheat. Yeah, he's trying to cheat.
Brooke
He's not a cheater. Still clean for now.
Kayla
What is going on? Please, someone explain to me.
Brooke
No. Aaron, you heard. Heard us. Oops. So guess cat's out of the bag. You're on the radio right now with a show called Brooke and Jeffrey in the Morning.
Jose
Dude.
Kayla
What? No, no, no, no, no.
Jose
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Kayla
No, no, you got. You guys. No, no. You guys need to delete this. Really?
Brooke
We'll delete it after we post it.
Jose
And send it to your girlfriend.
Brooke
And send it. Yeah.
Jose
Okay.
Brooke
Yeah.
Aaron
Why would you guys do this?
Kayla
Caleb, why would you do this? What are you talking about?
Jose
It's not her fault. It's not her fault. These are your. Your words, your actions.
Kayla
I was just asking the question. I mean, what are you talking about? This is ridiculous. On the radio like this?
Jose
You are the most upset, innocent person I've ever.
Brooke
That's a great statement. Clearly, Aaron, you're aware that this breaks some social rules here. Otherwise, you wouldn't be as upset as you are right now.
Kayla
Well, I mean, the cat's out of the bag, sure, I get it. But you can't blame a guy for trying.
Jose
It is so weird how cavalier you were about it. Like. Like you just thought she was gonna go along with this. Why would you ever think that?
Kayla
It wasn't my idea. It was my mom's idea. Come on. Oh, and I thought about it and I thought, yeah, that sounds great.
Brooke
Actually, they do say mothers know best. Yeah. Hey, honey, you should cheat on your girlfriend. If mom is telling me to, but I don't know. Kayla, what are you thinking now that you're hearing all this?
Aaron
I'm thinking that this is absolutely disgusting, and I'm absolutely gonna.
Kayla
Come on.
Jose
Wait, so you never thought about you and him together?
Brooke
No.
Jose
That's like.
Kayla
Come on. We get along great.
Jose
I was a joke.
Brooke
Aaron, dude, even if she was attracted to you in any way, I'm sure her friendship means way more to her than just some random dude. I know. If you're not happy with your current girlfriend, that's okay. But don't bounce over to the roommate.
Jose
Who'S, like, 20ft away, especially before you've broken.
Brooke
That's what I was gonna say. I mean, you could, but at least single again.
Kayla
Listen, it wasn't my idea. My mom came up with this, and I just went with it.
Brooke
Oh, man.
Jose
I mean, you understand that, right, Kayla?
Aaron
Yeah, because what every girl wants is a guy who can't think for himself and only has his mom to listen to.
Brooke
Oh, Jose, there's hope. Okay, well, it was definitely an awkward call. But the good news is, at least the truth did come out. Yo, the truth was way spicier than I thought it was.
Jose
Dude, I did not think this. Yeah, I thought the mom. I mean, the mom is obviously a wackadoo, but like, I thought.
Brooke
I don't know, take out a 1950s encyclopedia. I think it used to be a swear.
Jose
You know what I'm saying?
Aaron
No, I'm just so thankful for you guys helping me out because otherwise I would have thought he was innocent, too.
Brooke
It seemed like a misunderstanding.
Jose
You need to go get a bottle of wine to bring home to your roommate tonight. Some ice cream and have a good.
Brooke
So that Aaron and roommate can split it and have a nice romantic evening, just the two of them.
Jose
He is not a.
Kayla
Hey, I'm coming. I'll be there.
Brooke
It's a party.
Jose

The episode kicks off with Brooke and Jose expressing gratitude to their subscribers, emphasizing the importance of listener support. Notable Quote: Brooke (03:02): "I go through our subscription list every day and I kiss you all on the forehead good night. Every day. Every single night."
2. Highlighting Listener Comments (03:12 - 03:58)
Before diving into the main story, the hosts read and react to listener comments. Hallie Cruz, a dog groomer, shares how the podcast helps her stay calm during hectic workdays, prompting Brooke to wonder humorously if the show calms dogs or makes them "nippy" (03:39). This segment underscores the show's positive impact on its audience, blending lighthearted interactions with genuine appreciation.
Notable Quote: Jose (03:12): "Hey, and for everybody that subscribes, we truly appreciate it. I know that it may not feel like that makes a difference, but it really does make a difference."
3. Introducing "Awkward Tuesday" and Common Drama-Inducing Events (03:52 - 05:35)
Brooke segues into the episode's main feature, "Awkward Tuesday," a segment dedicated to addressing uncomfortable social scenarios that often lead to misunderstandings and drama. She humorously lists events notorious for causing tension, such as "bachelor bachelorette parties, Thanksgiving dinners, and of course, Brooks. And out of wedlock, baby showers" (05:06). This introduction prepares listeners for the forthcoming story by highlighting relatable situations where awkwardness is almost guaranteed.
Notable Quote: Brooke (04:00): "Some mothers can be a little overbearing."
4. Presenting Kayla’s Story: The Overbearing Mother and the Confused Setup (05:35 - 07:02)
The core of the episode revolves around Kayla, a listener who attended a family company picnic organized by her father’s business. At the event, Kayla's mother attempted a matchmaking maneuver by introducing Kayla to Aaron, her roommate’s boyfriend, under the false pretense that Aaron was single. This revelation disrupts Kayla, who is already in a committed relationship with her roommate, creating a tangled web of deception and confusion.
Notable Quote: Aaron (05:50): "Hi. Thanks for having me."
Brooke (04:50): "If we come back and let you make your offer. Awkward Tuesday phone call to figure out what's really going on with your roommate's boyfriend right after this. Hold on. It's awkward."
5. Analyzing the Situation: Miscommunication and Mixed Signals (07:02 - 08:38)
Brooke and Jose dissect the layers of misunderstanding in Kayla's predicament. They highlight the crucial discrepancy between what Kayla's mother perceives and the reality of Aaron's relationship status. Aaron's assertion that he had "broken up with her six months ago" contrasts sharply with Kayla's knowledge of his ongoing relationship with her roommate, indicating a significant communication gap.
Notable Quote: Aaron (07:53): "Like, clearly, he's not."
Brooke (08:36): "Yeah, I don't know."
6. Strategizing the Awkward Phone Call: How to Confront the Issue (08:38 - 10:33)
The hosts offer Kayla actionable advice on addressing the awkward situation. They suggest initiating a phone call with Aaron to directly address the confusion, emphasizing the importance of being both confrontational and compassionate.
