Hey, welcome to the podcast and gotta say, happy Juneteenth. Yeah, hope you take a moment today to educate yourself on the holiday. Maybe support a great black owned business in your area. You know, do something good.
Alexis
Do something good out there from some good restaurants lately.
Jeffrey
Yeah, I love that. I love that. So today we've got something a little different for you. It's called a closure call. We don't do them that often, but they're kind of cool. Like, it's when people need closure in their life from a past relationship and that could be romantic, it could be a family relationship, a work relationship, and we actually get them back in touch with that person from their past. So these are, these are pretty cool. So you're going to get to hear that. But first, we love to highlight some comments. Alexis. Yeah, a beer said, downloading episodes for my flight. I can't wait to listen for five hours.
David
Wow.
Jeffrey
Oh, beer.
Alexis
But you do what I do. You have to like download it on Spotify or whatever so you get in case you don't have the Internet.
Jeffrey
That's right.
Alexis
Smart.
Jeffrey
I feel like you're going to get a headache from that much of us.
Danielle Fishel
Yeah.
Jeffrey
All right, we'll take some Tylenol. All right, here we go. Your closure call starts now.
Brooke
The truth is, everyone has a price. So, Brooke, let me ask, how much would it take for you to leave your husband and your children to start a whole new life?
David
A million dollars?
Brooke
No, a billion dollars.
Alexis
I think that would be.
Jeffrey
I would never.
Brooke
A bogo coupon to the country buffet with the nacho cheese fountain.
Jeffrey
Okay, well, we're thinking about it.
Alexis
More enticing than a billion.
Brooke
Well, one of our listeners faced a similar dilemma recently where he had to choose either a life changing, insane amount of money or his family. What?
Alexis
Dang.
Brooke
You would think that'd be a pretty easy decision, but it wasn't. You're gonna find out what happened in a brand new closure call coming up next. Quick history lesson. This segment started when Brooke suggested we do something called foreclosure calls.
Jeffrey
Oh, my go.
Brooke
She wanted us to call low income families and tell them they're getting evicted while she laughed in the background. Which horrible idea.
Jeffrey
Every time you say something like this, I have to do more charity work just to like.
Alexis
And she does a lot of charity work.
Brooke
That's kind of what we adjusted this segment to closure calls, which is helping people. And I know Brooke didn't like that idea as much, but management did. So I can hear the sound effect.
Alexis
Your mortgage was denied.
Brooke
Love that. But we're trying to help our listeners get some answers and much needed closure about an issue or a question that's been eating away at them for a while.
Jeffrey
I love this segment.
Brooke
And today we're talking to a guy named David who reached out to us about his mom.
Jeffrey
Oh.
Brooke
Hopefully he's not foreclosing on her, but, David, welcome to the show, man.
David
Hey, guys. Thanks for having me.
Jeffrey
Yeah, it always makes me so sad when people have terrible relationships with your mom.
Alexis
Are you assuming? Is it?
Jeffrey
How do you know?
Brooke
Yeah, we don't even know anything if.
Jeffrey
He hasn't talked to her. Isn't that the whole point of closure call? It's always like, someone that you need closure with.
Brooke
Let's ask him. What's going on with your mom, Dave?
David
Yeah, so I did have a falling out with my mom, like, three months ago.
Alexis
Brooke is really good at these.
Jeffrey
It's sad. It's in the title of the segment.
Alexis
He could say, like, I'm talking to my mom. We have an issue with my sister or something.
Brooke
Why did you and your mom have a falling out?
David
So it's all over this inheritance from my grandpa who.
Brooke
Oh, yeah, cut the mom out. There you go.
Jeffrey
What?
Alexis
Wait, what?
Jeffrey
That's.
Alexis
Cause Jeff would do that.
Brooke
That's exactly what I would do. I don't know what is going on with your inheritance.
Jeffrey
What happened?
David
So my grandpa lives in South America, and honestly, I've met him a couple times.
Jeffrey
Okay. And this is your mom's dad, right?
David
Yeah.
Jeffrey
Okay.
Brooke
Okay.
David
But he really likes me, you know, actually, when I graduated from high school, he sent me a check for $5,000.
Brooke
Oh, wow.
Jeffrey
Dang.
Alexis
I think I got a pizza party for three.
Jeffrey
I always got the amount of money, how old I was, so.
Alexis
Oh, that's small.
Jeffrey
Yeah, I got 18 bucks.
Brooke
So your grandpa is pretty well off.
Jeffrey
Dang.
David
Yeah. He's not doing bad or he wasn't doing bad.
Jeffrey
Yeah.
David
It just felt like me and him connected when we did meet, he passed away.
Jeffrey
Wouldn't that make your mom happy, though?
Brooke
That he passed away?
Jeffrey
No, that they had a good relationship. Jeffrey.
David
There's more to the story.
Brooke
Okay, okay.
David
All right. So when he passed, I got a letter in the mail. It was, you know, it was actually sent to my mom's house, but it was addressed to me.
Jeffrey
Okay.
David
And it was from my grandpa's lawyer. Saying that in the will I was mentioned.
Jeffrey
Okay, interesting.
David
Yeah. So Grandpa, what he did in the will is he basically gave me two options. You know, I could split the inheritance with my mom and my two older sisters, or I could keep the whole thing.
Jeffrey
What a position to put you in.
Brooke
Easy choice.
Alexis
Easy choice, Jeff says.
Brooke
Well, I don't know.
Jeffrey
Do you know how much money they were talking about right from the beginning?
David
I know the amount it was. It was a lot of money.
Jeffrey
Yeah.
Brooke
Damn, that is a big decision. Like, what? Where was your head at?
David
So, of course, my first thought is, like, let me split it evenly with everybody, you know? But then I started to think about it more. Like my sisters are older than me. Like, well ordered, older than me. They're already married. One has a kid, the other one's working with a job she loves. I mean, they're set financially.
Alexis
Oh, they already have their established.
Brooke
Yeah, they don't need more money.
Jeffrey
I cannot believe your grandpa left that decision to you. I mean, that's just a decision that's going to tear people apart no matter what.
Brooke
What's your financial situation?
David
So, like, I just finished college. I don't have a job right now. You know, I still got a bunch of student loans coming in.
Alexis
Didn't the $5,000 cover that?
David
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Maybe in the 60s, not now.
Alexis
Okay, so you got debt.
David
So I got a lot of student loans. And, you know, I also have dreams. You know, I wanted to travel the world, and I felt like that was my grandpa basically giving me that shot, that chance.
Jeffrey
He just turned you into a trust fund kid. You can do those things then.
David
But then, you know, my mom, she's divorced from my dad, too, and she does work a couple jobs, but honestly, I don't know what she would even use the money for.
Brooke
Maybe so that she wouldn't have to work two jobs.
Jeffrey
Oh, why she would want the money? Yeah, Very simple, solid reason.
David
But, you know, my mom's just one of those ladies who work just because they enjoy working.
Alexis
Oh, yeah, I know what you mean.
Brooke
Ew. No matter what, who likes working just for work?
Jeffrey
You say that, but how do you know that? I mean, obviously she couldn't put you through college. She probably works. Cause she has to.
Brooke
I mean, so, big decision here. What did you decide to do?
David
I decided to keep the full inheritance.
Brooke
What?
David
Wow.
Brooke
Oh, I was kidding, dude. That's kind of a rough move to do to your family.
Alexis
Wow.
David
My mom kept asking me too. She was like, what did the letter say that grandpa sent you?
Brooke
Oh, she didn't know.
David
Yeah, no, I didn't tell her.
Brooke
Why wouldn't you at least talk to your mom about that? Like, talk to someone?
David
Well, like I said, I didn't tell her, but now I feel like she does know.
Jeffrey
Why do you say that?
David
Yeah, because a couple of days later, I get a text from my mom saying, you need to come by the house. You got to pick up all your stuff. I put it in the boxes. It's out in the garage.
Brooke
Oh, she kicked you out?
David
Yeah. And, you know, it didn't. Honestly, it made me feel bad. I tried to talk to her. I even went over and knocked on the door, but, you know, she doesn't answer. She won't come to the door.
Brooke
Okay, so this is the falling out with your mom? I mean.
David
Yeah, yeah. It's been a few months since it happened. You know.
Jeffrey
You haven't talked to her at all?
David
No, not. Not for the last few months.
Brooke
Yeah, same bro. But over.
Jeffrey
Wait, though. Like, that's. How do you know that she knows? Like, it could be another reason. Like, how would she find out about the inheritance?
David
I mean, it's the only reason. I could think that she threw all my stuff in the box and put it in the garage for no reason.
Alexis
Because, I mean, if it was a normal issue, she would talk to you.
Brooke
Right. So this has been a few months now. What made you reach out to us, like, to get some closure?
David
Honestly? Because I've been rethinking it, and I'm. You know, maybe I should probably split it up. But my mom's not talking to me, and my two sisters know nothing about it, so since I can't reach my mother, maybe I can use some help.
Jeffrey
I just can't imagine money like this isn't worth money. Right? Like, losing your relationship with your mom.
Brooke
Depends on how much money. Everybody's got a price.
Alexis
Yeah.
Jeffrey
At least you could be alone on a private island.
Brooke
Yeah. So obviously you know how this works, David. You've already been working with our producer to come up with four questions that we sent to your mom. I will tell you, David, she wrote back to us. And hopefully when I read it to you coming up here, it's going to give you a little bit of closure. Oh, my God. But it's going to cost you some money.
David
Blackmail me? Please.
Brooke
Okay, I got to think. Legally, I can. But when we come back, we'll read what your mom had to say and do your closure call right after this. Man, this is crazy. We've been talking about it off the air, about what we would do if we were in David's shoes, where you have the option to take an entire inheritance just for yourself or split it amongst your family members.
Jeffrey
I feel like it's a sick joke that your grandpa left you with.
Alexis
You know, honestly, everybody's laughing from up above, down below.
Brooke
It's a big moral dilemma, though, and David chose not to split it with his mom and his two sisters. He wanted to keep the whole bag for himself, which it. It was his decision. That was what his grandpa wanted him to make. This is what we didn't discuss, though, in the first part, is transparency. Like, should he have told his mom his decision of what was going on? Because it sounds like he tried to keep it all secret from her, and then she found out later and then got upset about it.
Alexis
And that's what I agree with. No matter what you choose, it's a hard decision. I would at least sit my family down and say, look, mom, dad, I don't think you guys need it as much as I do or whatever, but at least tell everybody, right? As a family.
Brooke
Brooke, are you telling your family that you're holding on to the whole inheritance?
Jeffrey
We don't have inheritance in my family, to be honest with you. I'm just having a really hard time having sympathy for you, because it's like, these are the choices you made. Not only did you cut them out, but then you didn't tell them, and then you get kicked out of your mom's house. Like, duh.
Brooke
You can call her a name, David. That's okay. She's just jealous of you that, you know, you're richer than her.
David
You know, I'm just. I'm just waiting for these answers.
Brooke
Okay? I am. I'm curious. Before we get to the answers, have you spent any of the money yet, just for fun?
David
No, none of the money's come through yet. I don't know if it's tied up in paperwork or something, but.
Alexis
And he was in South America, so maybe it's harder to transfer. I don't know.
Jeffrey
It doesn't come through a money order.
Brooke
So we're gonna read your mom's answers here. How you feeling, man? You nervous? Exc.
David
Like, I. Probably a little anxious. You know, like I said, I'm. I don't want it to be mad at me, so I'm trying to figure this out, so I don't know.
Brooke
Okay. We've already sent these four questions to your mom. You worked with our producer on him. The first question that we sent her was, mom, why are you so Mad at me to the point you kicked me out of your house. Okay, that's good, because we don't know. We don't know if she knew about his decision with the inheritance. We just assumed that. And that's what you wanted to ask, right, David?
David
Yeah, that's number one. Why? I need to know why she's mad before we go further.
Brooke
Okay, yeah, it's true.
Alexis
Because if she doesn't know about it yet, then.
Jeffrey
Did she explain?
Brooke
She said, because, David, you were given a big decision to be selfish or consider anybody other than yourself, and you chose yourself.
Jeffrey
Oh, she knows.
Brooke
I thought I raised you better.
Jeffrey
That's it. Oh, that hurts.
Alexis
No, she threw it back on herself.
Brooke
How does that feel, David?
David
I don't know. I don't feel like I need to give her any of the money if she's coming at me like that.
Jeffrey
Really? Did you not hear what she said? She's not even talking about the money. She's talking about you being selfish, only thinking of yourself.
David
No, I feel like if that was the case, that's a conversation we could have had in person. And she could have told me, hey, maybe you're being selfish, but nah, Right now all I'm hearing is she's jealous. Really?
Alexis
Oh, man.
Brooke
It was kind of a rude answer back from a mom.
Alexis
So, look, Brooke did mention earlier she is being very passive aggressive by not saying anything and just kicking you out.
Brooke
I know.
Alexis
I think you're both a little bit. Could be handling it in different ways better.
Brooke
Right, but that is why we do these calls. I try and help get some answers and hopefully get closure. Let's go to the second question, which was, I'm assuming you know about my decision with grandpa's inheritance.
Jeffrey
Okay, we already got that answer.
Brooke
What would you have done in my shoes? I guarantee you wouldn't have split the money evenly.
Alexis
Wow, that's coming in hot.
Jeffrey
Yeah, I mean, now that's almost sounding like an accusation. Is that how you meant it, David?
David
You know, it feels fine after that first answer she gave.
Brooke
Well, she did answer that. And she wrote a quote, like, sent a quotation, and it says, greed is a fat demon with a small mouth, and whatever you feed it, it's never enough.
Jeffrey
Is that a common.
David
I don't. Did she call me. Did she just call me fat? I don't even.
Brooke
No.
Jeffrey
Are you not listening?
Brooke
I think greed. Greed is the fat demon, not you.
Alexis
I feel like we're getting answers here, but we're not making progress, like, on either side. Yeah, mom is mad. He still Seems like he is.
Jeffrey
Well, I think the mom is just disappointed.
Ryan Seacrest
What?
David
What's she disappointed about? I mean, she has a lot more money than I do.
Alexis
I mean, yeah.
Jeffrey
You just graduated college, worked her whole life, and provided for you.
Brooke
Still a little tense. Maybe things will get better.
David
I hope she puts that quote on her wall.
Jeffrey
Okay, next to laugh, love family, love greed. All right, David.
Brooke
All right, let's. Hopefully I make the mood a little better with question three. It says it's been three months, and I haven't seen any money from the inheritance. Are you blocking my inheritance or do you know what's going on with it? So you. Wait, you suspect your mom is the one that's blocking you?
David
I mean, she's blocked me out of the house.
Jeffrey
I thought we were doing this to, like, try to repair your relationship with your mother, David, not to attack her. Find out where your money is and accuse her.
David
I'm not attacking her. I'm asking, does she know anything about it?
Brooke
Yeah, he's quoting. He's quoting Rihanna. You better have my money.
Jeffrey
What did she say?
Brooke
You asked if she's blocking the inheritance, and she wrote back the same quote as before, this time in all caps. Greed is a fat demon with a small mouth, and whatever you feed it, it's never enough. Wow, she's doubling down.
David
I'm glad I turned to you guys for the help, man. All I'm getting is bathroom quotes.
Alexis
Bathroom quotes?
Brooke
Wait, are you blaming us?
David
Oh, I think I should charge her for my school loans after this. Oh, my God.
Brooke
That'll smooth things over.
Jeffrey
How is she responsible for that?
Alexis
You know? I mean, we can't control how you.
Jeffrey
It sounds like you're turning into the little fat demon who's never, never full, David, is what it sounds like.
David
She answers question four. That quote. I don't know what the hell?
Alexis
We made zero progress.
Brooke
We only have one question left. It keeps getting worse. Maybe we should just get through it.
Alexis
Question four, with greed.
Brooke
No, we wrote. I know you're not talking to me right now, but I do regret how things went down. Mom.
Jeffrey
Finally, a little remorse.
Brooke
Can I please call you so we can talk this thing out? Yes.
Alexis
That's great.
Brooke
That's a good olive branch. Yeah.
David
See, I'm the only good person between us.
Jeffrey
Okay? I would have recommended leading with that question, David, and then maybe taking out the first three.
Brooke
Yeah, I'll tell you, David, she didn't write back with the same quote. That's the good news. Okay, here's what she said, and I'll warn you It's a little bit shocking.
Jeffrey
She doesn't want to talk to him.
Brooke
Are you ready for this?
David
Let's go.
Brooke
She says maybe you should call your grandpa instead.
Jeffrey
What? I thought he died.
Brooke
She says he didn't really die, but he did want to test you to see if you'd make the right choice and put your family first. It was all.
Jeffrey
Shut up, David.
David
She says this is. That's got to be a joke.
Brooke
No way. I'm serious, man. She says, you didn't, and now we all know the answer, so you've been effectively removed from Grandpa's will going forward. Oh, my God.
David
I don't believe that. I think she lost her mind.
Brooke
I'm telling you, I'm reading her answers right here. She says there's no money. Money coming to you if you're wondering. You reap what you sow.
Jeffrey
Oh, again with a.
David
Again with the quotes? Yeah, I don't know. We might have to throw her in a facility. I don't know.
Jeffrey
I don't think you're hearing her. You don't have money to pay for a facility for your mom.
Brooke
Good point.
David
Well, what's that called when the. When the police just get her then? Because we have to file ones.
Alexis
You really should take your advice and call your grandpa. And once he answers.
Brooke
Are you talking?
Jeffrey
You'll know. I don't think you're his favorite anymore, though. I was like, why would a grandpa put that in a. In a will? That's crazy. Makes sense.
David
I don't believe her. And I honestly, I don't think you guys should believe her. I think died, and she's just, like, holding on to my check at the house.
Jeffrey
Can we make awkward Tuesday phone calls to South America?
Alexis
I don't know.
Jeffrey
I want to call Grandpa.
Brooke
I don't want to get any deeper involved into this family situation. It is messy.
Alexis
This was amazing.
Brooke
I hope it got you a little bit of closure there, David. I. I don't know if.
David
I don't know. Like, I don't believe it.
Brooke
Make sure you keep in touch with us and let us know what happens with. Yeah, I guess. Say hi to your grandpa for us.
Jeffrey
Call him with some apologies.
Brooke
Yeah, that's your closure call.
Alexis
Oh, my gosh.
Brooke
It's Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning.
Jeffrey

Alexis
Surprisingly we don't harass them.
Jeffrey
Yeah.
Alexis
You know, week after week after we should.
Jeffrey
No, bro, he's going to be a little busy talking to his mom and grandpa I think to call us. Yeah, busy figuring out how he wanted to say. No, it was just a joke. I was going to split it with everybody. Totally in the comments about him. We got a lot of selfish jerks. No wonder they tested him. Talk about karma.
David
Yeah.
Jeffrey
Oh, selfish again. So it's kind of the majority is against this kid. Yeah, I'd say so.
Danielle Fishel
Yeah.
Jeffrey
And for grandpa, I think a lot of people, I mean, are going to be changing their wills.
Alexis
Kind of a nice little town. Best as you go out to the family.
Jeffrey
Totally some morals. Yeah.
Alexis
Yeah.
Jeffrey
Well, thank you so much for being here. It means so much to us, especially on this second date podcast. So please subscribe, share, follow, do all the things and you can always follow us on social media. You can harass us there. Okay. Please don't though. Yeah, it's fine at Brooke and Jeffrey.

Podcast Summary: "Closure Call: Grandpa's Inheritance"
Podcast Information:
Jeffrey:
"Hey, welcome to the podcast and gotta say, happy Juneteenth. Yeah, hope you take a moment today to educate yourself on the holiday. Maybe support a great black-owned business in your area. You know, do something good."
[02:34]
Brooke and Jeffrey kick off the episode by celebrating Juneteenth and introducing a special segment called the Closure Call. Unlike their usual content, the Closure Call aims to help listeners find closure in various types of past relationships, whether romantic, familial, or professional.
Jeffrey:
"So today we've got something a little different for you. It's called a closure call. We don't do them that often, but they're kind of cool."
[02:49]
The hosts welcome David, who seeks closure regarding a strained relationship with his mother stemming from an inheritance dispute involving his late grandfather.
David:
"So my grandpa lives in South America, and honestly, I've met him a couple times. When he passed, I got a letter from his lawyer stating that I was mentioned in his will. He gave me two options: split the inheritance with my mom and two older sisters or keep the entire amount for myself."
[06:00]
David explains the predicament left by his grandfather’s will. Faced with the choice of either sharing a substantial inheritance or keeping it entirely, David initially considers an equitable split. However, observing that his sisters are already financially stable and his mother works multiple jobs, he leans towards retaining the full inheritance to support his own goals, such as paying off student loans and traveling the world.
Jeffrey:
"I cannot believe your grandpa left that decision to you. That's just a decision that's going to tear people apart no matter what."
[08:07]
David’s decision to keep the inheritance causes a severe rift with his mother, who subsequently kicks him out of the house. Attempts to reconcile or understand her perspective lead to further communication breakdown, leaving David seeking closure.
David:
"I decided to keep the full inheritance... My mom kept asking me too. She was like, what did the letter say that grandpa sent you?"
[09:10]
Brooke and Jeffrey facilitate the closure by posing four critical questions to David's mother through the podcast, aiming to uncover the reasons behind her anger and the true status of the inheritance.
Brooke:
"The first question we sent her was, 'Mom, why are you so mad at me to the point you kicked me out of your house?'"
[13:35]
David’s mother responds with a cryptic quote:
"Greed is a fat demon with a small mouth, and whatever you feed it, it's never enough."
[14:14]
This response suggests that her anger is rooted in perceiving David’s actions as driven by greed, exacerbating the emotional divide.
Jeffrey:
"She's not even talking about the money. She's talking about you being selfish, only thinking of yourself."
[14:37]
When asked about the inheritance’s status:
Brooke:
"She says there's no money coming to you if you're wondering. You reap what you sow."
[18:31]
This revelation indicates that the inheritance may not materialize as expected, leaving David in uncertainty and further straining the relationship.
Throughout the conversation, Brooke, Jeffrey, and Alexis provide their takes on David’s situation, highlighting the complexities of handling family inheritance and the importance of transparency.
Alexis:
"No matter what you choose, it's a hard decision. I would at least sit my family down and say, 'Look, mom, dad, I don't think you guys need it as much as I do,' or whatever, but at least tell everybody, right? As a family."
[12:35]
The hosts emphasize that open communication might have mitigated some of the conflict, suggesting that David's lack of transparency contributed significantly to the fallout.
In the final segments, Brooke shares the mother’s shocking response, revealing that the inheritance is nullified and framing the entire ordeal as a test of character set by the grandfather. This unexpected twist leaves David grappling with disbelief and uncertainty about the future.
Brooke:
"She says, 'Maybe you should call your grandpa instead.' She says he didn't really die but wanted to test you to see if you'd make the right choice and put your family first. It was all...'"
[18:32]
The episode concludes with the hosts reflecting on the moral dilemmas presented by inheritance disputes and the importance of prioritizing family relationships over financial gain.
Jeffrey:
"Well, thank you so much for being here. It means so much to us, especially on this second date podcast. So please subscribe, share, follow, do all the things."
[23:15]
Brooke:
"The truth is, everyone has a price."
[03:37]
David:
"I decided to keep the full inheritance."
[09:13]
Mother’s Response:
"Greed is a fat demon with a small mouth, and whatever you feed it, it's never enough."
