I'm Emila, host of the podcast Crumbs. For years, I had to rely on other people to tell me my story, and what I heard wasn't good. You really. Last night, it felt like I lived most of my life in a blackout. I was trapped in addiction. I had to grab the lamp and smashed it against the walls. And then I decided I wanted to tell my own story. Hey, it's Alec Baldwin. This past season on my podcast, here's the thing. I spoke with more actors, musicians, policymakers, and so many other fascinating people like writer and actor Dan Aykroyd.

I love writing more than anything. You're left alone, you know, you do three hours in the morning, you write three hours in the afternoon. Go pick up a kid from school and write at night. And after nine hours, you come out with seven pages and. And then you're moving on.

45 years ago, a Virginia soul band called the Edge of Daybreak recorded their debut album, Behind Bars. Record collectors consider it a masterpiece. The band's surviving members are long out of prison, but they say they have some unfinished business.

Jeffrey
Hey, we got a special treat for you today. Welcome to the Second Date Update podcast. It is, of course, Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning. And we asked you. Yesterday, I did a poll on Spotify. Sorry, it's the only, you know, podcast platform we can do polls on.
Jose
Yeah.
Jeffrey
Yes. Thank you, Alexis. And asked say yes to the Ex is a special episode where we help a listener attempt to get back with their ex. Would you like to hear it on this pod? Two options. Yes. Post that drama or. Nah. Second date's only here.
Alexis
Yeah. Okay.
Jeffrey
I feel like we need a drum roll, but I Don't have one. Oh, my God. Is there a choo? 94% of people say yes. Post that. Drum up.
Alexis
I'm just laughing that drums go chew.
Jeffrey
Yes, they do. They do. Jose. We're really good, Alexis. No, we really do listen to what you want to hear. So we're going to give you a little special treat today with a brand new say yes to the Ex.
Brooke
Awesome.
Jeffrey
Sit back, enjoy.
Alexis
But pretty soon they're going to like the whole entire.
Jeffrey
Be careful, Watch out, be careful. And let us know in the comments if you like this type of content. So you know, we love to hear your feedback, good or bad, if you're not too mean. Yeah. All right. All right, show starts now.
Brooke
Do you believe in second chances? A second chance to pass that driver's test.
Jeffrey
Oh. Ooh. Yeah.
Brooke
Alexis liked that idea. A second chance for dinosaurs to rule the earth.
Jeffrey
No. Wow, that doesn't go well, Jeff.
Brooke
A second chance to slip past that security guard and finally make it up on stage at the Taylor Swift concert and give her a hug.
Alexis
No, that is not smart.
Jeffrey
Yeah. Arrested immediately.
Alexis
She just swat. I think for security.
Brooke
Good things happen when you get a second chance. And today we're hoping for a second chance at love.
Alexis
Okay.
Brooke
Trying to get one more shot for a guy who's desperate to win back the woman who dumped him.
Jeffrey
Oh.
Brooke
And it's kind of crazy cuz the way that she ended things was one of the most brutal stories that I think we've ever heard on this show. Still, he says he's willing to risk it all for one more chance.
Jeffrey
Wow.
Brooke
And it's gonna come up. We'll see if it pays off in a brand new say yes to the Ex right after this. JLo and Ben Affleck. Prince William and Kate Middleton.
Jeffrey
Okay.
Brooke
Nick Cannon and baby mamas number four and six. Seven.
Jeffrey
Wow.
Brooke
Just a few examples of couples who dated and broke up only to get back together years later cuz they realized, oh my God, I think maybe they were the one.
Jeffrey
Oh, was it four and seven he went back to. I thought it was three and five.
Jose
Okay, which one's?
Brooke
Yeah, it gets a little messy there. But the point is you never know until you try. And if you have an ex that you look back on and think, ho, did I make a mistake by letting them go. We created this segment called say yes to the X so that we can reach out and see if there's a chance if they want to give it one more shot. And it was really intended for long lost loves to reunite.
Jeffrey
Yeah.
Brooke
I'm not really sure if today's caller, Landon, falls into that category.
Jeffrey
Why? Was it like a one night stand he wants to reconnect with?
Brooke
His email said him and his girlfriend have only been separated for six weeks, but he's ready to jump back out and see if there's another chance there. Let's talk to him. Landon, welcome to the show.
Jose
Hey, guys.
Jeffrey
Okay.
Alexis
Some people take years, some people take weeks.
Jeffrey
Yeah, my sister and her boyfriend at the time broke up for five days and then got back together and they got married.
Alexis
Hey.
Jeffrey
So, you know, it was a very hard five days in that time. He got a tattoo and joined the Navy.
Jessica
Wow.
Jeffrey
Yeah, he was dealing with some things. I don't know what happened.
Brooke
Six weeks after hearing that story. Are you sure you want to go through with.
Jose
Yeah, yeah. Guys, I don't want to let her slip away. It's. That's become really clear to me over these past six weeks.
Brooke
And what's her name?
Jose
Her name's Jessica. And, yeah, we were together for, like, about a year and it was. I mean, she's the most serious girlfriend I've ever had.
Jeffrey
Okay. Why'd you guys break up six weeks ago?
Jose
Well, there are reasons, you know, which we can get into, but I. I'll just say, like, I've been pretty miserable ever since and she didn't tell me in person. She did. She did let me know via, you know, words on a page.
Jeffrey
Oh, she dumped you?
Brooke
Okay.
Jose
Yeah.
Jeffrey
Okay. What?
Brooke
I was wondering why you were, like, having trouble coming out with it. You're clearly. It's still pretty rough. It only happened six weeks ago.
Jose
I mean, look, it was some stuff that I didn't necessarily agree with, but she had her reasons.
Jeffrey
Okay, and so she wrote you what? Sounds like a letter, I'm guessing. Did you guys talk in person ever?
Jose
Well, it was a note on my door, actually.
Brooke
She broke up with you via door note?
Jeffrey
Are you sure she's not your landlord and trying to evict you?
Jose
No, no. I mean, I've been through that before, but. No, I mean.
Jeffrey
Wait, what?
Brooke
Oh, my God.
Alexis
He's like, I've broken up with a building before. I know what it's about.
Jeffrey
I mean, that's gotta be hard to take, man.
Jose
Yeah, it was really harsh. It was like a list of reasons.
Brooke
Oh, God. Yeah, our producer told me that you actually have the breakup note.
Jeffrey
Oh, no.
Jose
Yeah.
Brooke
Would it be okay? Like, if it's not too painful for you, would you mind, like, telling us some of the things that she said in it?
Jose
I mean, honestly, I don't know if I'm comfortable doing that because they were pretty mean and I don't feel like they're accurate, so I would prefer not to.
Brooke
Okay, well, if she's being rude and mean to you, why do you even want to get back together with her?
Jose
Well, because she has some points that are kind of valid, I guess, and I think that I've improved on those areas. Is it.
Alexis
It's good to admit that you've made mistakes. Like if she's like, you did this and this and you fix those and maybe she will want you.
Jeffrey
I mean, if she's writing a list of mean things. She's mad. She's mad. Mad she likes it.
Alexis
That's a normal girlfriends are like, though, right?
Jeffrey
No, no. I mean, is it one specific thing? Did you cheat on her or something?
Jose
No, no, no, I did not cheat. I'm not. Okay, good. I'm not going to read the entire note, but I'll tell you guys a couple of the things she said. Okay?
Brooke
Give us an example. Give us the bullet points of it and then we'll whole thing on the brook and Jeffrey Stor. No, no, no, no, no, no.
Jeffrey
Okay, we'll just make flyers and put it on doors around the city.
Alexis
He's kidding, bro.
Brooke
Okay, just give us a couple of them.
Jose
Okay, the first one is you refuse to use the word selfie because you think it's too girly.
Brooke
That's. You refuse to use the word selfie, Landon.
Jose
Yeah, I don't use the word selfie. I use the word selfo. Like, you know, like in Spanish, there's like, feminine and singular plural.
Jeffrey
Cell phone.
Alexis
Singular, plural. Masculine would be.
Jeffrey
Are you that worried about your ma? You think adding an ie to the end of a word is gonna alter?
Jose
Well, no, I just think that. I mean, just to be like, more grammatically correct, I guess, like to say self.
Jeffrey
I don't. I don't think that's grammatically correct at all, sir. I don't think you could find that on any dictionary.
Brooke
If you're in the club with your boys, you want to be like, hey, Jonathan, let's take a selfie together.
Alexis
Like, bro, me and my bros. Yo, dog, you look super cute right now. Get over here, homie.
Brooke
Yeah, let's self fold up.
Jose
Yeah, yeah, exactly. But you guys see what I'm talking about? Like, that's really nitpicky. Like, that's not a reason to break up with someone, even if it's a little annoying or weird, right?
Jeffrey
It sounds kind an excuse, but yeah. So, what else?
Brooke
Were they all like that?
Jose
Yeah, I mean, I think they're all like that. I mean, the next one she says is. You thought you were tough enough to stare at a solar eclipse?
Jeffrey
What, are you blind right now, or can you see?
Jose
No, I can see. It was a little blurry for, like, a day, but how often does a solar eclipse happen? Like, I didn't. Okay, yes, I also thought, like, it'd be cool to, like, look at the sun, but I.
Jeffrey
Those are all questionable things, but at.
Brooke
The same time, what, Are women gonna dump a guy every time they do something a little bit stupid to prove their masculinity?
Jeffrey
They add up enough of them. Yeah. No men would ever have. I mean, how many pages do we have here?
Alexis
Totally.
Brooke
Maybe do you have, like, a last one for us, Landon?
Jose
Sure, I. I can give you one last one.
Alexis
The fact that there is three is kind of like.
Jeffrey
There's a lot.
Alexis
I know there's more, but I just mean.
Jose
Okay. Okay. She says you jumped on a trampoline from the second floor to prove your abs and back muscles were strong enough.
Jeffrey
Okay.
Alexis
You just sound like a fun guy to me. You sound like one of my friends.
Jeffrey
You sound like an annoying little brother.
Alexis
I would totally get along with you, brother.
Brooke
Well, hold on. Were your abs and back muscles strong enough to absorb the blow?
Jose
No. I mean, I. I definitely hurt myself in the hand.
Alexis
Oh, no. You pulled your back.
Jose
Yeah.
Jeffrey
Well, maybe she doesn't try to prove your manliness.
Brooke
It. I'm seeing a lot of red flags. That's not the right word I'm looking for.
Jose
I would say they're like. They're more like highlights. Those were the fun parts.
Jeffrey
So. So it's not that you learned anything from the letter she likes.
Brooke
Okay.
Jose
No, I mean, what I learned was that those are the fun things in relationship, and she needs to relax a little bit.
Alexis
And I agree.
Jose
I miss her. And I bet she misses me, too.
Alexis
Okay, there's, like, zero fight.
Jeffrey
I'm just gonna let you know if we're gonna. How does this work again? Does he ask her back out?
Brooke
Yeah, we call the girlfriend and let him talk for it.
Emila
Okay.
Brooke
Like, he has to win her back himself.
Jeffrey
Let's not use any of that sentence that. You need to relax. You need to calm down. I'm just some hot advice there.
Jose
Okay. Fair. Fair.
Jeffrey
Okay.
Brooke
And those are the problems that she had with you. So if you want her back, you're probably going to need to compromise a little bit. Like, can you agree that if she wants you back, going Forward. You won't stare into solar eclipses anymore. Are you capable of that?
Jose
Guys, I already learned my lesson. I'm doing that again. I mean, that's clearly done.
Brooke
Growth. That is what we're trying to accomplish here.
Jeffrey
Just trying to see if he can use the word selfie in a sentence.
Brooke
Yes.
Jeffrey
Yeah.
Brooke
So we're about to dial your ex, Jessica, and we'll get her on the phone and let you try and win her back yourself.
Jose
All right.
Brooke
We'll come back and see if she says yes to the ex right after this.
Jeffrey
Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning.
Brooke
You know, I rarely do this, but during the break, I got on the phone and talked to Landon.
Jeffrey
Oh, you did?
Brooke
Off the air. And I just told him how we felt. Honestly, in the room, I don't know.
Jeffrey
That I like you talking for all of us.
Brooke
I think we're on the same page, because based on the breakup note, it seems like Landon has done some dumb things.
Jeffrey
Yeah.
Brooke
Correction, a lot of dumb things in his relationship. And his attitude was Jessica just needs to chill out and relax.
Jeffrey
Yeah.
Brooke
And if Landon really feels like it's all on her to change herself and just relax about it, then why are we doing this segment?
Jeffrey
Yeah, because then it's just going to be her getting angry at him all over again because she says what the.
Brooke
Problem was, and he says that shouldn't be a problem for you.
Jeffrey
Yeah.
Alexis
So asking her to change.
Brooke
What we're trying to do here is get some growth because all of us as humans, are constantly evolving, trying to become better people. And frankly, Landon, I'm not sure if in the past six weeks, since the breakup, there's been enough growth on your end, from what we just heard, to warrant her saying yes.
Jeffrey
That is the most adult thing that Jeffrey's ever said. Okay.
Brooke
Being honest with you. Sorry. I know we're supposed to be fun, but, yeah, real talk.
Alexis
I tell you to say that because honestly, you would never say that on your own.
Jose
Landon, what was that last bit I missed? That last.
Brooke
They were all telling me that I'm not smart enough to come up with that on my own.
Jeffrey
Have you had any growth in the last six weeks, Landon?
Jose
Yeah, I appreciate that. Look, I made changes, and I. I see that there are some mistakes that I made.
Jeffrey
Okay.
Jose
And the reason I'm so. You know, I want to take this opportunity now, even though it's been just six weeks, because I think we have an opportunity to grow together, Jessica and I, rather than growing apart.
Jeffrey
See, that's good. I like that. That's a good Sentiment, you know? You know, can we ask real quick, is she dating right now or is she just single? Single. Have you heard?
Jose
Well, she better not be dating. It's only been six weeks.
Alexis
That's what I'm saying. How do people even do that?
Jeffrey
I think after a month, it's fair game. Yeah, I think after two weeks, you're.
Alexis
Fin like your significant others.
Jeffrey
Yeah, that's why we broke up with them. Exactly.
Brooke
We have to reach out to her to find out some of these answers. And if you're just listening for the very first time, say yes to the exes. It's a little bit different than a second date update.
Jeffrey
Right.
Brooke
Because these people have had a previous relationship before. They already know each other. And we're going to try not to jump in on the conversation as much as we normally do. We're going to try and let them talk and work it out as much as possible amongst themselves. Yeah, that's the goal. It's going to show if they've really had any growth in their relationship or not. And so now I'm about to punch up Jessica, our producer. Got her on the other line. You ready to talk to her?
Jeffrey
Don't punch any ex girlfriend.
Brooke
Okay, yeah, let's just bring her on the line with you.
Jeffrey
Here we go.
Brooke
Hey, Jessica, you there?
Jessica
Hello?
Jeffrey
Hi, Jessica.
Brooke
Jessica, this is Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning, obviously.
Jeffrey
Thanks for being on the show with us.
Jessica
Yeah, hi. It's not gonna lie, I'm a little bit caught off guard, but what's up? What's going on?
Brooke
So our producer told you that we have your ex boyfriend Landon on the phone right now and really, really wants to speak to you for a second. Hey, Jessica, that's Landon. So what we're gonna do here is we're just gonna back away and let you and Landon have a chat for a second. All right, go ahead. Landon.
Jose
Hey. Yeah, sorry about this, but I, you know, I just have something to say to you.
Jessica
Okay, well, I mean, like, why do you have the radio station calling me?
Jose
No, don't worry about that. I mean, just pretend like it's you and me. There's nobody else here.
Alexis
No one else is here. No one's listening.
Jeffrey
Yeah, we're not laughing.
Jessica
I don't even know, like, is this on air with, like, viewers? Like, come on.
Jose
They're called listeners, not viewers. I don't think they can see us, but I think. Just focus on what I'm about to say. Okay.
Jessica
What do you have to say, Landon?
Jose
Okay, for the last six weeks, I've Noticed that. I've missed you a lot, and I just. I need you back in my life, so.
Jeffrey
Okay.
Jose
I'd like you to say yes to the ex.
Jeffrey
Just jumping straight to it, skip the middle.
Jessica
What does that even mean?
Jose
Well, that's the segment they're doing on the show, and they've done it before with somebody else and helped them get back their ex. So now I'm trying with you.
Jeffrey
Okay, yeah, maybe talk to her about, like. Shh.
Brooke
Don't intervene. Let them work it out.
Jessica
Are you. You want us to get back together?
Jose
Yeah, it just makes sense. It's like peanut butter and jelly.
Jeffrey
Oh. Aw.
Jessica
Okay.
Jose
Landon, look, I promise it's gonna be better. I have a feeling about it.
Brooke
Good feeling.
Jessica
I mean, are you still living with your mom?
Jose
Well, sort of, but it's really different from last time.
Jessica
Okay, different how?
Jose
Well, okay, so if you remember, before, my bedroom was on the main floor of my mom's house. Like the first floor.
Jessica
Okay.
Jose
Yeah. Well, now, you know, she's getting older, as you know, and she doesn't like using the stairs. So last week I offered to switch rooms with her and she said yes. So now I actually have the entire top floor to myself. You know, it's kind of like a penthouse suite.
Jessica
Okay.
Alexis
It's like having the upper body.
Jessica
But you're basically still living with her, though.
Jose
Well, I mean, it's like my own slate. And in a year or two, I'm going to save up enough money to build a separate entrance. You know, a staircase that goes from the outside to my room.
Jeffrey
A slide? Are we going to put a slide in?
Jose
Okay, it's going to take two years.
Jessica
I mean, that's not even different. It's like the same thing that you were doing before.
Jose
Okay. I mean, I would have moved out sooner, but, you know, my credit screwed up from my identity being stolen, which was, you know, I was a victim.
Jessica
Yeah, but you did that on purpose. You put your Social Security number online. Because, oh, my God, you'd think it'd be so funny if somebody stole it and realized that you didn't have any money. Like, what was that?
Jose
I mean, it was funny. It was hilarious to be on the dark web and experiment with the dark web, but I admit that it's backfired.
Jeffrey
What?
Jose
Look, Landon, I just think now things are different for me. I'm moving up in life. I mean, literally up a floor. So maybe you'd want to hang out again and we can grow together instead of growing apart.
Jessica
I appreciate the sentiment, and thank you for reaching Out. But no Landon. No, I don't want to live with your mom. I'm sorry.
Jose
Tell me, are you dating anyone else?
Alexis
Left turn.
Jessica
That's none of your business. I'm single.
Jose
That sounds like a confession or something.
Jessica
I don't know that I'm not seeing anybody right now, but I plan on it. Yes.
Jose
Oh, okay.
Brooke
Not seeing anybody until you say yes to the X, and then you'll be seeing Landon.
Jose
Yeah. You're not seeing anybody until you say yes to the X.
Brooke
That's right. That's the whole goal of the segment. And Landon has the endorsement of every member of this morning, plus all of our listeners, all 12 of them growing.
Jeffrey
She just said no eight times while you were talking.
Brooke
Well, she didn't. She didn't say it nine times. That's the magic number. I mean, you get nine lives in dating.
Jeffrey
I will say, it sounds like he really does care for you and love you.
Jessica
Yeah, he lit his leg on fire with Axe body spray. I will let you know that.
Jose
I mean, that was to prove that there should be a product warning on.
Jessica
Frat guys, but all put together in one person.
Jeffrey
I'm not kidding.
Alexis
It literally says flammable on every aerosol can.
Jessica
Landon, like, in all seriousness, you have way, way, way more growth that you need to go through personally. And I support you. I hope you do. But before we ever have any type of conversation ever, and it's gonna be more than six weeks or six months.
Jeffrey
I support you with silence.
Brooke
But look, the key is. That wasn't a no.
Jeffrey
That wasn't a no.
Jose
I thought. Here's what. Here's what I think we should do. Well, I want to check in again in six weeks, and I just want you to promise that between now and then, you don't see anyone else.
Jeffrey
No.
Alexis
Like a reservation.
Brooke
That's fair.
Jeffrey
I'm gonna do that.
Jessica
Yeah, I don't know about that.
Brooke
I mean, it's like people taking time apart to figure out themselves before they get back together. Stronger than ever.
Jeffrey
Oh, I always thought people were doing other people when they took time apart.
Brooke
That's what you do during your time apart to make yourself stronger. That's what it takes.
Jose
I promise. And I guarantee I will be celibate the next six weeks. I'll be like a priest.
Jeffrey
Ok. You live with your mom probably.
Brooke
Longer than that, if we're being honest.
Jeffrey
The room's right below yours.
Brooke
All right, man. I'm sorry. It sounds like we're not going to be able to get your ex to say yes.
Alexis
She said no.
Brooke
To the ex.
Jose
All right, well, look, for now, she did, but six weeks later, we're checking in.
Jeffrey
All right.
Brooke
I like your optimism.
Jeffrey
Another radio show he could look at.
Brooke
Jeffrey in the morning.
