We love that you found the podcast. Is Brooke and Jeffrey the home of the second date update. And hey, leave it in the comments. Where did you find us? Like maybe it was a viral TikTok or you.
Tabitha
I was invited onto the show, Brooke. I got an audition like 14 years ago.
Alexis
How'd this guy get in here?
Brendan Patrick Hughes
Yeah, we still don't know but she.
Tabitha
Just looked over at me, I'm like, you know me.
Alexis
Let us know what brought you here. We love to hear it. And got a great second date update right now to start your Saturday.
Jose
Here we go, second date update.
Jeff
Whenever you ask people what's your idea of the perfect first date, by far the most cliche answer is a long romantic walk along the beach at sunset.
Tabitha
Okay, good. That's not mine.
Jeff
That's what everybody says, but you're right.
Alexis
Who actually does that really, especially on a first date?
Jeff
Nobody. The closest thing we get normally is a long situation stumbly walk home from a dive bar at 1am that's more like my dream. And the closest body of water is the puddle of urine outside your apartment that you created. Yeah, but one of our listeners, believe it or not, actually did the cliche thing and did a date at the beach.
Alexis
You really did a long walk on.
Jeff
The beach, Andrew, you in love yet or what? Was it as perfect as we all imagined it would be?
Andrew
Well, it was, I enjoyed it. But it was also kind of weird because it was, it was the first date. I think maybe, maybe a long walk.
Jeff
On the beach could have just said no, it wasn't as amazing.
Alexis
But I mean it's interesting. Like a beach date can get pretty intimate, right? Like you're rubbing suntan lotion on each other, you're wearing, you're wearing bathing suits.
Tabitha
Kids everywhere.
Jeff
No, I think we're back to the ideal version. The real version is going to look a lot different. But Andrew, tell, tell us how it went. Who did you go there with?
Andrew
Well, I Went there with this girl, Tabitha. We met through a friend of a friend on Facebook.
Alexis
Okay.
Andrew
And we just sort of started talking and, you know, she seemed very nice and attractive. She had tattoos and she was outdoorsy, which is what kind of. You know, I saw pictures of her hiking and other things, so I figured she would like the beach.
Alexis
Okay, so the beach was your idea. Was it like a day at the beach type of thing?
Andrew
It was an evening walk.
Alexis
Oh, okay. It really was a walk.
Jeff
It was the most cliche you could possibly do.
Tabitha
How long was the walk? We say long walk. I mean, are we talking like a two, three hour adventure?
Alexis
Are you tired, Jose?
Jeff
In my head, if it's over 100ft, Jose's out.
Andrew
There is no blisters formed, let's just say.
Alexis
Yeah.
Tabitha
Okay, so it was a comfortable walk.
Alexis
Did you, like, pack a picnic?
Andrew
Well, it was really just. It was a walk. And we were. We did end up building a fire, so there was stuff to do that.
Jeff
Oh, committed a crime.
Alexis
That's cool. I'm hoping it was in the legal area, like one of the places that.
Jeff
Allows you to build a fire. Like, what was it? What was it like? Tell us, Andrew. We're just guessing.
Tabitha
Yeah.
Andrew
Yeah. Well, you know, we. We went up. The thing was, on the whole walk, she was very quiet, so I ended up doing all the talking and I would make jokes and she wouldn't even laugh.
Tabitha
I cannot relate, dude.
Alexis
What's that like?
Tabitha
I'm just kidding.
Alexis
Is she just, like a more reserved person, do you think? I mean, since she's a friend of a friend.
Andrew
Well, that's the thing. Like, you know, we built fire and we're sitting there. I didn't see any of the signals. And then out of the blue, she kisses me.
Alexis
Whoa.
Jeff
Must have been doing something right.
Alexis
She's a wild card, man.
Andrew
When it happened, I was like, okay. And that was real fun and enjoyable that. That moment. But then all of a sudden, all these bats started flying above our heads and she starts freaking out because she doesn't know anything about bats. And I'm. I'm kind of a bat nerd. And so she starts waving her hands and flailing her heads, trying to get the bats away. I was like, don't worry, these are Eastern red bats. Because I could tell by the sounds that they're making.
Tabitha
Wow, you're a bat expert.
Jeff
You really know you didn't just make that up.
Andrew
I'm a Batman and I. Oh, wow. See, she didn't laugh at that one.
Jeff
Okay, I'm assuming she Was just more turned on by that.
Alexis
I mean, you want the bats or eating the mosquitoes that are all around you? Like, keep them there.
Andrew
Yeah, exactly. Bats are way better than mosquitoes. And I wanted her to stop waving her hands about because provoked, they could attack. But if they're not provoked, I'll just keep on being normal bats, so.
Tabitha
Oh, that is nuts, dude.
Alexis
So did she listen to you or did she continue?
Andrew
She did. Calm down. I played her some sounds of bats that I had pre recorded on my phone.
Tabitha
This is where I think we're finding out why she's not calling you back.
Andrew
Well, as we were walking back to the car, I thought that that might be the case, so stopped talking about bats. But I. Again, she wasn't contributing anything. So I ended up flipping into this conversation about wolves. And I'm not sure if that was the right choice. I mean, it's just things that I'm interested in. And I knew she was outdoorsy.
Jeff
I mean, they say don't hide your passions on a first date.
Tabitha
Very true.
Jeff
I also think they don't say, like, say all of your passions all at once to break the silence on a first date. But I could be wrong.
Listener
I don't know.
Jeff
How did this end? How did the night end?
Andrew
I mean, the night ended fine, I guess. I mean, we survived the night.
Alexis
Did you have another kiss?
Andrew
Thankfully, yeah. There was a small kiss, but it was an appropriate goodbye kiss.
Alexis
Okay.
Tabitha
Nothing like a big makeout session.
Alexis
I'm wondering. It sounds like you were uncomfortable with her silence. Did you ever ask her any questions other than yes or no questions, you know?
Andrew
Yeah, absolutely. I wasn't trying to do all the talking. It just. It was certainly weird because I did want to get to know her, and I don't feel like I got to know her.
Jeff
Okay.
Andrew
Other than she wanted to kiss me for a moment, which was cool, but weird.
Alexis
That was the one positive sign.
Jeff
Yeah, because that's what I was trying to figure out. Like, why do you want this date if there were so many things that went wrong and things that, you know, you guys were barely even talking.
Andrew
All right, maybe. Maybe it's morbid curiosity.
Alexis
Yeah. Or maybe it's just that she's hot and it was a really good kiss.
Andrew
Yeah, maybe. You know, maybe she's more comfortable with kissing than talking, but maybe she would get more comfortable with talking as we go. I don't know.
Tabitha
No, dude. Then keep her there.
Alexis
That's what kind of lady.
Jeff
Maybe we should just call her and see what she has to say about it.
Tabitha
She doesn't talk to us, Jeff.
Jeff
Then maybe this.
Tabitha
We need to kiss her. Yeah, we need to kiss her on the phone, Jeff.
Alexis
No, let's not do that.
Jeff
We'll just call her and see what happens. But first, we gotta play a song. We'll come back. Get your second date update right after this, all right?
Andrew
All right. But you better not kiss my woman.
Alexis
Yeah, we'll make sure that doesn't happen.
Listener
Yeah, I don't know.
Tabitha
I don't think we can promise.
Jeff
Yeah, no promises, dude. Here we go.
Andrew
Second date update.
Jeff
Maybe I'm jumping too far ahead here. Yeah, you are. But, Andrew, down the road, when you and Tabitha get married, instead of releasing doves at the wedding, you should release a cage of bats into the church. And maybe before that, the biggest challenge is going to be getting her to actually say I do, because she hardly even speaks. If you're just joining us, probably none of this is making any sense to you. But I say she wasn't talking a lot because she was super quiet during their date. And I bring up bats because Andrew's a bat aficionado and knows all about bats and their histories and their diets. Impressive. There were bats there flying above them while they made out on the beach together. And apparently, the eastern red bat only attacks when provoked. That's what we learned from Andrew. Yes.
Alexis
I need to look up that fact. I don't know if I just believe. Of course you do.
Jeff
We've heard stranger things happen on this show. But I'm just praying that Andrew didn't set up the bat attack to look like Jeffrey. He's probably a bat whisperer.
Brendan Patrick Hughes
He does know all their noises.
Jeff
Can you confirm that you didn't set up the attack, Andrew?
Andrew
I can confirm that I had nothing to do with releasing bats around my date. Like I could orchestrate something like that. I don't think I'd be single.
Jeff
Okay. It was not planned to run into bats on the beach that night.
Alexis
Andrew, I'm just wondering, what are you, like, looking for out of this? What do you want?
Andrew
I mean, honestly, I just want to know what I did or what happened. Like, I just. I mean, another date would be nice, but I want to know so I can adjust for future follies.
Alexis
Yeah, I mean, it makes sense. A lot of mixed signals from her.
Andrew
Yep.
Jeff
All right, well, let's call and try and figure that out for you. We're going to dial the number right now. Here we go.
Listener
Hello?
Jeff
Hey, is this Tabitha?
Listener
Yeah. Who is this?
Jeff
Oh, you don't know? My name is Jeff. And I'm from a morning radio show called Brooke and Jeffrey in the Morning.
Alexis
Hi, we're all here.
Listener
Oh, okay. Okay. Okay. Hi, good morning. I've heard you guys before, but why are you calling me?
Jeff
Oh, okay, cool.
Alexis
Thank you.
Jeff
Well, we're calling you at the request of one of our listeners, Andrew, who you went out with the other night.
Listener
Okay. I'm guessing Andrew put you up to this.
Alexis
Yeah, but I think it's a good thing. Like, he seemed to really like you.
Listener
Yeah, I. I think he did like me. You know, I just. I really wasn't ready for that date. You know, it was really unexpected how I would feel about Andrew.
Jeff
Oh, interesting. Because we heard a little bit about the date and from the sounds of it, you kissed him.
Listener
Oh, he. Gosh, he told you that?
Alexis
Well, it sounded like a really romantic setting. I could see why. I mean, you're having a fire on the beach. Like, sounds beautiful, bats going overhead.
Jeff
Romantic.
Listener
Yeah, you know, I. I have an appointment in a little bit, so I don't have a whole lot of time, you know, Can. Can you guys tell me what's going on?
Jeff
Okay, yeah. So I mean, just real quick, we're doing something called second date update, and we're trying to help Andrew figure out why after your romantic beach date, there hasn't been a date number two, because he did mention that you were a little bit quiet during the walk along the beach.
Alexis
Yeah.
Jeff
Is there a reason for that?
Listener
I mean, he didn't do anything wrong. You know, I just. I got out of a long term relationship a few years ago.
Alexis
A few years ago?
Listener
Well, the guy, he. We were in love, but he moved out of the country. He had an opportunity to go do something and, you know, it broke my heart.
Alexis
Yeah, that can be really hard. Are you not over it still? Even after years?
Listener
Well, I thought I was over it until I met Andrew, which we started talking on Facebook through text. I had never heard his voice before.
Jeff
Okay, are you saying that Andrew was your very first date since that breakup years ago?
Listener
No, no, no. I've dated a few people here or there, but.
Alexis
Okay.
Listener
The thing that. That really just shocked me about Andrew was walking side by side with him on the beach, hearing his voice. He sounds exactly. I mean, identical to my ex.
Jeff
Weird.
Alexis
Oh my God, that makes sense. So you're just like living in this past relationship while you're hanging out with Andrew. That's got to be so hard.
Tabitha
Or awesome. I wish I could relive my.
Jeff
I mean, that is super weird.
Listener
It was weird. Like at One point, he tried to hold my hand, and I was, like, looking out at the water, and all I could think about was my ex and, like, all the good times we had together.
Alexis
Oh, no.
Listener
Up until the bat attack, that was. That kind of, like, brought me back to reality for a moment, but I was starting to tear up because I. Yeah. The one that got away. I feel like that's who I was walking on the beach with.
Alexis
Totally. And it's not like, if you were, like, doing maybe an activity, you wouldn't have as much reflection, opportunity. Oh, God, Totally.
Listener
You know, even if we were at a restaurant and sitting across the table from each other, I could see him. I would obviously know that that's not my ex. But walk inside by side on the beach with him, it just brought back all these memories. Like.
Alexis
And he kept talking.
Tabitha
Yeah, because she wasn't. So he was trying to fill that space.
Alexis
Oh, my God.
Listener
Telling me about all these weird animals he was obsessed with. And, like, I'm glad he has passions and everything, but I just don't know how to get over the fact that he sounds just like my ex.
Alexis
Oh, girl, I feel for you. I do. And it's nothing he can do anything about. Unless he can use different voices. Maybe he could talk in, like, lower, higher for you.
Tabitha
Maybe you can do impressions like a celebrity.
Alexis
Oh, my God.
Jeff
Let's find out if he can, because I need to tell you, Andrew's been on the other line listening this entire time and wants to talk to you.
Alexis
Sorry.
Listener
Oh, no, I'm. Andrew, I'm so sorry I ruined our date.
Andrew
Oh, I know. I'm. I didn't. I had no idea what was going on. Not that I'm happy that that's what it was, but I'm happy that that's what it was.
Alexis
Is it okay to listen to him? I mean, this is kind venue for you, since it's just voice right now.
Listener
Yeah, I mean, it sounds like I'm talking to him on the phone. Like, it's. It's so weird.
Tabitha
Oh, man.
Jeff
Are we sure that it's not your ex?
Tabitha
Wow.
Andrew
I think. Was there anything that he needed to apologize for that you'd like to hear me say?
Listener
Such ugly. Why did he leave me?
Alexis
You can get closure with him. I mean, maybe Andrew's a better version of your ex.
Tabitha
You know, maybe don't compare them.
Alexis
How could you not?
Jeff
I mean, this is such an awkward situation. Like, Brooke, what would you do?
Alexis
My husband's best friend sounds just like him. It's so weird. When I first Met them, I was like. It creeped me out. But now that I know them both more, that isn't actually the case.
Jeff
Although Brooke would say yes to pretty much anybody. So, Alexis, what about with you? Let's get someone that might say no.
Brendan Patrick Hughes
Depends how you ended with your ex.
Alexis
So, yeah, Alexis is always hung up on her ex.
Andrew
Yeah.
Alexis
So I probably like the voice. She's like, close my eyes. I don't want to look at you.
Jeff
I mean, Tabitha, where. Where is your head at right now?
Listener
You know, I just don't know how I can date Andrew and be thinking about my ex. Like, what if I accidentally called him the wrong name one day? Like, how would that make him feel? Like I don't want to put him in a situation where he's just the other guy.
Alexis
Yeah, that must be hard to hear, Andrew.
Andrew
No, I.
Alexis
It's.
Andrew
It's hard. But I understand where you're coming from, Tabitha. I. I feel for your situation. And I'm, you know, even right now, I'm kind of very self conscious of what I don't. You know, like I would. I don't know that I could handle that.
Alexis
Oh, he's a good guy too.
Jeff
I mean, this is the right time to ask. Tabitha, would you want to go out with Andrew one more time? We'd pay for it.
Tabitha
This is a good time, Jeff.
Jeff
This is the best time.
Andrew
I just.
Alexis
I wish you both could get past this because it seems like you could be a really good couple.
Andrew
Yeah, we could sip on some helium balloons.
Tabitha
Funny.
Listener
Come on.
Alexis
What if you just did a date where you made sure his face was always in your view?
Listener
You know, I might be down to go to like one of those silent raves where we just listen to our headphones and those are fun.
Jeff
I hear something where Andrew doesn't talk at all.
Listener
Yeah, well, I.
Andrew
We could try it, but I don't think it's something that would work long term based on, you know, what Tabitha is saying. So I. Yeah, I, you know, I don't wanna. I was really just curious about why. And I guess selfishly that it wasn't something that I did. It was just who I am.
Alexis
Oh, well, that's. That makes you feel better.
Tabitha
It's not something I did. It's me.
Alexis
Yeah, we're joking, Andrew.
Jeff
We get it.
Alexis
We get it.
Andrew
Hey, I just have one question for you, Tabitha. Did you kiss me because you wanted to kiss me? Or was it like you were kissing your ex?
Tabitha
Oh, that's a great question.
Alexis
Do you want to know the answer?
Jeff
I want to know why?
Listener
Honestly, I. I just wanted to know if it was the same or if different.
Alexis
And what's the verdict?
Listener
Yeah, it was definitely a lot wetter than I remember.
Alexis
That's a good review.
Jeff
Is wetter better? I don't know if it really is.
Andrew

Brooke and Jeffrey: Second Date Update - Episode Summary: "Second Date Update Classic: Bats on the Beach"
Release Date: April 12, 2025 | Host/Authors: Brooke, Jeffrey, Alexis, and Friends | Platform: iHeartPodcasts
Overview
In the "Second Date Update Classic: Bats on the Beach," hosts Brooke and Jeffrey, alongside co-hosts Alexis, Tabitha, and guest Andrew, delve into the humorous and somewhat awkward aftermath of Andrew's first date with Tabitha. The episode offers a blend of storytelling, candid discussions, and interactive listener engagement, all aimed at uncovering the mysteries behind why Tabitha hasn't pursued a second date with Andrew.
1. Setting the Scene: Andrew's Beach Date (04:26 - 09:08)
Andrew begins by recounting his first date with Tabitha, describing it as a quintessential romantic evening walk along the beach—a seemingly perfect setup that quickly turns peculiar.
Jeff: "Whenever you ask people what's your idea of the perfect first date, by far the most cliché answer is a long romantic walk along the beach at sunset." [03:45]
Andrew: "We went on an evening walk, built a fire, and things were going well until the bats showed up." [06:00]
The date includes activities like building a fire, which Andrew thought would foster intimacy. However, the unexpected appearance of bats introduces an unforeseen twist. Andrew’s passion for bats becomes a focal point, leading to an amusing dynamic where his expertise contrasts with Tabitha's apprehension.
Andrew: "These are Eastern red bats. They only attack when provoked." [06:37]
Jeff: "I mean, you want the bats or eating the mosquitoes that are all around you?" [07:16]
Despite the bat incident, the evening concludes with a brief, appropriate goodbye kiss, leaving Andrew puzzled over Tabitha's silence post-date.
2. Analyzing the Date: Host Discussions (09:08 - 14:00)
Brooke and Jeffrey, along with Alexis and Tabitha, dissect the elements of Andrew's date, focusing on communication challenges and the role of shared interests.
Alexis: "Who actually does that really, especially on a first date?" [04:00]
Jeffrey: "I think they don't say all of your passions all at once to break the silence on a first date." [08:08]
The hosts speculate whether Andrew's deep dive into his bat knowledge might have overshadowed building a personal connection, potentially contributing to Tabitha's lack of follow-up.
3. Listener Engagement: Calling Tabitha (11:44 - 19:47)
To provide actionable insights, the hosts decide to reach out directly to Tabitha. Jeffrey dials her number, leading to an unplanned but insightful conversation that sheds light on the true reason behind her hesitation to pursue a second date.
Tabitha Reveals:
Tabitha confides that during the beach date, Andrew's voice reminded her of her ex-boyfriend, making her emotionally conflicted despite the enjoyable moments.
Andrew listens in, expressing understanding and regret, acknowledging the inadvertent emotional challenge he posed.
Key Quotes:
Andrew: "I just want to know what I did or what happened. Another date would be nice, but I want to know so I can adjust for future follies." [11:18]
Tabitha: "I really wasn't ready for that date. It was really unexpected how I would feel about Andrew." [13:08]
This revelation highlights the complex interplay between personal history and new relationships, emphasizing the importance of clear communication and emotional readiness.
4. Moving Forward: Hosts' Advice and Closing Thoughts (19:47 - 22:24)
The hosts offer supportive advice to both Andrew and Tabitha, suggesting ways to navigate their emotions and possibly rekindle their connection.
Alexis: "Maybe you can do a date where you made sure his face was always in your view." [18:24]
Jeffrey: "This is the best time." [18:11]
They discuss strategies for overcoming the shadow of past relationships, advocating for open dialogue and mutual understanding to foster new connections.
Final Remarks:
As the episode wraps up, the hosts reflect on the night's revelations, emphasizing that while Andrew and Tabitha may face challenges due to past associations, there's potential for growth and future opportunities if both parties are willing to engage honestly.
Andrew: "I just have one question for you, Tabitha. Did you kiss me because you wanted to kiss me? Or was it like you were kissing your ex?" [19:10]
Tabitha: "It was definitely a lot wetter than I remember." [19:31]
The humorous yet heartfelt exchange underscores the episode's theme: navigating the complexities of first dates and the lingering impacts of previous relationships.
Conclusion
"Second Date Update Classic: Bats on the Beach" masterfully blends humor, vulnerability, and practical dating advice. By unraveling the intricate layers of Andrew and Tabitha's first date, the hosts provide listeners with relatable insights into the challenges of forming new romantic connections amidst personal histories. The episode serves as both an entertaining narrative and a thoughtful exploration of the nuances inherent in modern dating.
