Brooke
Second date update there's two types of people that you're gonna meet in the dating world. The neurotic, uptight over planners like Brooke, who have to schedule out every minute of the entire evening months in advance or they won't even have a good time. Is that true, Brooke?
Whitney
No.
Alexis
I can't show up on time for anything, let alone, like, over plan it. Do you not know me?
Brooke
Brooke was literally yelling at me to put it in your schedule, Jeff. Put it in your schedule or you're gonna forget.
Alexis
That's because we have to travel for work and you're not gonna show up.
Brooke
Okay, neurotic. And then there's the chill, suave, go with the flow types like me I.
Alexis
Knew who believe that they can make.
Brooke
A good time happen with anyone in any bathroom at any truck stop at any time. That's my promise.
Alexis
That's the only two types. Yeah.
Brooke
Has to be a truck stop, though. And one of our listeners says he's also the go with the flow type, but he's worried it may have been his undoing on his date. His name is Russell, but we're gonna call him Russ. And he's not gonna fight us because he's chill with it. What's up, Russ?
Russell
Nothing much. Yes, I am. I go with the flow. Dude, that's.
Alexis
Russ is just like water. What water goes with. I got it.
Brooke
I got it. Okay.
Alexis
To every need fits in any container.
Brooke
Way to turn this into, like a physics lesson.
Alexis
Just say that Brooke is the opposite of him.
Brooke
Yeah, let's. Let's let me lead this conversation. The chill type. So, Russ, why don't you tell us about how you. How you met this person that you went out with. What's her name, by the way?
Russell
Her name is Whitney.
Alexis
Okay. And how'd you meet her?
Russell
Well, we met at this place. I probably shouldn't say the name, but it's one of those drinking and darts places.
Deli Mex Voice
A bar.
Brooke
Yeah.
Alexis
Well, I know. That's what I was thinking, too.
Russell
I mean, it's one of those newer places that electronically keep score of the darts as you go. Like, you know that place Pop Golf? Yeah, yeah, it's like that, but for darts.
Brooke
I've heard of these. That's cool.
Alexis
So again, it's just taking, like, old bar games and charging. Charging people more for it. Of Alexis, but, yeah.
Brooke
Met Whitney there.
Russell
I was there with co workers, and she was part of the group next to us.
Brooke
You just met her in the wild? Like, that's crazy.
Russell
In the wild.
Alexis
How did you approach her? Like, how did you guys Strike up a conversation super, totally naturally.
Russell
Like, there's these tables between our groups, and we were sharing them to set drinks on, and she sat hers down, and I was just, like, said to her, how's it going? You know, that's it.
Alexis
Good. Pickup line.
Brooke
Nice.
Russell
Yeah. And she just leaned in and said, I'm just going really good. And she even whispered to me. She said, because I'm cheating.
Brooke
What?
Alexis
How do you cheat at an electronic game?
Brooke
You're talking about darts, not about, like, relationships, Right?
Alexis
Like, she's not cheating. That's really funny.
Brooke
That's awesome.
Alexis
Were you able to get a date out of that meeting, or is this your one hangout?
Russell
Yeah, I asked her as it was coming to a close. I was like, hey, do you want to. Can I get your phone number? You want to hang out sometime? And she said, yes.
Brooke
That's awesome. So you spun that into a date a few days later. Is that what happened?
Russell
Yeah, the next week.
Brooke
Okay.
Alexis
What'd you guys do?
Russell
I didn't have a plan. I just said, I'll come pick you up if you're comfortable with that. And we can just drive into the city and figure out something to do.
Brooke
Or there's a lot of truck stops outside of the city, which also can guide you to those, but, you know, city is one way to do it. Okay, Where'd you go?
Russell
Well, so we drove in, and I wasn't hungry, and then I asked her if she wanted to get something to eat, and she said she wasn't hungry either.
Brooke
Oh, never trust that. Yeah, you didn't. You should have still bought her food, bro. I've learned from that mistake.
Alexis
So what did you guys. Did you go get a drink somewhere?
Russell
I was like, yeah, let's go get a drink. And she's really not actually a big drinker, and it was a weeknight, and I was like, all right, so no drinking, no food. I don't want to go sit in a movie theater, you know? So we just drove around, you know?
Brooke
Sorry. Wait, you. You did what?
Russell
We drove around.
Brooke
That's it. That was the day. Just driving.
Alexis
For how long?
Russell
Oh, about an hour. Less than an hour and a half.
Alexis
I was in high school. No, but was on, like, a pretty road, or is this, like, stoplight traffic driving?
Brooke
Does that make a difference to you, Alexis?
Alexis
Yeah, slightly.
Russell
I mean, it was night and there were stoplights. It was not some scenic drive in the country. No, it was driving around in the city.
Alexis
Okay, so now do you regret not having a plan?
Russell
Yes. Honestly?
Brooke
Yeah.
Alexis
At least you admit It.
Brooke
Well, how did that night end? Like, was it just driving the whole time?
Russell
Yes, that's about it. But it wasn't as awkward as it sounds like. That's the thing. We're talking about our family, talking about our lives, our work. And, you know, she was laughing. I was laughing. So it wasn't, like, as painful as it sounds.
Alexis
But I also. I also wonder if it wasn't painful for you because you had something else to do, like drive. She's just sitting there. She could suggest something at that point.
Brooke
Maybe we ended on a high note when they finished the evening. How did you guys leave it?
Russell
I dropped her off and we said we would do it again.
Alexis
Do. Do that again?
Russell
No, I said. I joked and I said, you know, next time we'll have a destination. And she was into it, you know, I said, let's get dinner. Let's be hungry. Maybe a weekend.
Brooke
And since then, how many times have you driven by her house quietly.
Alexis
Oh, he likes that. He thinks that's funny.
Brooke
Okay, I'm just kidding. He likes to drive.
Russell
How long has it been since that night? It's been just over a week.
Alexis
Okay. And you've heard nothing or little bits?
Russell
I only text her twice. She responded to the first text and not to the second one. I'm not gonna keep bugging her, you know.
Alexis
Okay.
Brooke
Yeah, but you can tell.
Alexis
You're gonna let us bug her?
Brooke
Yeah. So we're gonna come back and we're gonna try and play it cool and suave, but we're gonna take a page out of Brooke's dating life and have a little bit of a plan and ask her questions.
Alexis
Just a small plan?
Brooke
Yeah, just a teeny plan. We won at her and demand that she put it in the calendar. But more effective, we'll gently approach her and try and get you a second date update right after this. Okay.
Russell
Awesome.
Brooke
All right, man. Hold on. Second date update. You know what? I'm proud of our listener, Russell, because he listens to his dates and gives them exactly what they want. Whitney said she wasn't hungry. No food. She said she wasn't thirsty. No drinks. Okay. She said she didn't really feel like doing anything. Then her wish is his command. They're just gonna drive around the city and talk and talk until they bore themselves to tears. Your wish is his command.
Alexis
Until she said, okay, I think it's time to drive me home.
Brooke
All right, I'll take you right home. That's exactly what he did. So why isn't our man getting a call back today? I just hope she doesn't complain that he didn't set anything up and plan out a date. Because if he does, I'm gonna have to rush to his defense.
Alexis
Are you?
Brooke
Brooke, if that happen, would that turn you on too much? Because I could dial back my natural heroic qualities if that's going to be a problem.
Alexis
I see. I didn't know what you're inferring. Me to be turned on by.
Brooke
Yeah. My heroism that oozes out of my pores. Explain.
Alexis
I feel safe.
Brooke
Okay. Russell, do you feel safe?
Russell
I feel safe.
Alexis
Okay.
Brooke
All right.
Alexis
Yeah. Russell, I mean, I think we know what we're going to hear here. But I think it's going to be easy to get you another chance.
Brooke
What are we gonna hear here?
Alexis
That she was bored. That it was a boring date.
Brooke
Why do you always bring them down right before we do this? Why do you always do that? I think she's gonna. I think it's gonna be a scheduling conflict.
Alexis
Okay.
Brooke
And she wasn't bored at all. Or she's married and you were just a side piece. Okay.
Alexis
I'm the one breaking the moon.
Brooke
Somewhere in between there. We'll find it. Okay. Let's hope there's somewhere in between there.
Alexis
The married part is actually kind of good news. It's not your fault then, Russ. That's true.
Brooke
Because they didn't kiss.
Alexis
Know. I don't know.
Brooke
Did you guys kiss?
Russell
No, we didn't.
Alexis
I think that's good because she didn't.
Brooke
Ask for a kiss. If she had asked for one, though, he would have planted one on her.
Alexis
Yeah, that's still cheating. Like, my husband can't go drive for an hour with a random woman in a car that would.
Brooke
Michael, if you're listening, turn the car around now. We gotta get back to business here. We're gonna call Whitney. Let's dial her number and see if she picks up. Here we go.
Whitney
Hello?
Brooke
Hi, we're looking to speak to Whitney.
Whitney
Speaking.
Alexis
Okay.
Brooke
Hello?
Alexis
Hey, Whitney.
Whitney
Hi. Who's this?
Brooke
We like the sound of your voice. We're a radio show.
Alexis
She's got tentatives.
Whitney
What?
Brooke
We're a morning radio show called Brooke and Jeffrey in the Morning.
Whitney
Are you serious?
Brooke
Yeah. Not all the time, but right now we are wacky. We do try and do some fun stuff, like Alexis, tell them about it.
Alexis
We call people.
Brooke
Good work.
Whitney
Why are you calling me?
Brooke
Good question. There. Because we do. This segment is called a Second Date Update. And that's where we try and help listeners get another date after they went out with someone one time. And want to see him again.
Whitney
Oh, okay.
Brooke
So one of our listeners has asked us to reach out to you specifically. His name is Russell. Oh, you remember Russell. You guys, like, drove around the city for a while.
Alexis
He asked you out after you guys met at that dart bar.
Whitney
Yeah, we did. I was out with my sister, my best friend, her husband, and you know.
Brooke
Well, that's great. But we want to talk about Russell a little bit.
Alexis
Yeah, but we do know your sister's probably great.
Brooke
She's awesome. Your whole family, I'm sure. But what did you think of Russell on your guys's date?
Whitney
He was okay.
Alexis
Okay.
Whitney
He's okay looking.
Brooke
Oh, just call him ugly. It's better than okay.
Alexis
Okay, hold on though. Like, he. He pulls up to your house. I mean, you'd already met him in person and agreed to the date. It's not like you didn't know what he looked like.
Whitney
Yeah, but I didn't know fully about him. But after driving around for an hour, I really learned a lot. And sometimes that's positive, sometimes that can be negative.
Alexis
Okay. And it can change the way you're attracted to someone. That's for sure.
Brooke
Oh, yeah.
Alexis
Give it the.
Brooke
So what did you learn that changed your mind about him?
Whitney
He lives with his parents.
Alexis
Oh, well, that was direct. Okay.
Whitney
He's not stable. He's codependent on his parents.
Alexis
Well, wait, wait, wait, wait, though.
Brooke
Hold on.
Alexis
I think it's pretty common.
Brooke
I mean, yeah, I mean, we've definitely heard other listeners come on the show that have said that they lived with their parents and they're saving up a lot of money so they could buy, like a nice house during. Between jobs. Absolutely.
Alexis
Or in between roommates. I mean, there's so many different reasons why you would find yourself back in that position.
Brooke
We thought it may have been something that he, like, did wrong on the date, but he didn't do anything wrong. It sounds like.
Whitney
No, no, no, he didn't do anything wrong, but he needs to have his own place. He needs to be able to provide.
Brooke
Okay. I mean, I know we've heard that as a deal breaker and a hang up for, but, like, I mean, I can understand why you wouldn't want to bring that up to him during the date. You really think that's something where you would not even consider seeing him anymore because he lives with his parents?
Whitney
It's a deal breaker.
Alexis
How come? Like, why is it for you?
Whitney
Because he needs to have his own money. He needs to have his stuff together just a little bit more.
Brooke
Okay.
Alexis
You're like an independent woman who's out on your own making your own life, and you want somebody that matches that energy.
Brooke
I do wonder what Russell would have to say about that, because I need to let you know, Whitney, he is on the other line listening.
Whitney
He is?
Brooke
Yeah, yeah.
Alexis
It's on his. Another thing we do.
Brooke
Right.
Alexis
That's good. Thank you, Alexis, for your second contribution.
Brooke
But Russell is there, I think.
Russell
Yes, I am on the line and I'm just. It blows me away to hear you say that, because one of the things I learned about Whitney is that she also lives with her parents.
Alexis
Wait, what?
Brooke
Oh, my God.
Whitney
Yes, I do live with my parents.
Brooke
You do?
Whitney
Yes, yes, I do.
Deli Mex Voice
Hold on, hold on.
Alexis
What do you mean you live with your parents, Whitney?
Whitney
I mean, I live with my mom and my dad. One of us needs to have our own place.
Alexis
I honestly kind of get her on that. It'd be really hard to date if you both lived with your parents. No, I can't judge somebody else for it.
Brooke
It's hypocritical.
Whitney
I can and I do.
Brooke
Ok, so what we're learning here is the reason that you're not going out with Russell is because he lives with his family, even though you also live with your family. That's a deal breaker for you.
Whitney
Exactly.
Brooke
Why?
Whitney
Okay, how are we gonna hang out? How are we gonna hang out? You know, where am I gonna cook dinner for him at?
Brooke
It's kind of sexy if you think about it. If you're like, so do you want to go back to your mom's house or my mom's house tonight?
Alexis
I could see how that would really set in for you after you spend just an hour in his car together.
Whitney
Exactly.
Alexis
You're gonna spend a lot more hours in cars together. Yeah.
Whitney
I would have gone back with him to his house, but we didn't have anywhere to go.
Alexis
Okay.
Brooke
Oh, Russell, you're staying awfully quiet during this. Do you have anything to say to her?
Russell
I think this is completely ridiculous. Like, we should be closer to one another because we have the same situation. We're trying to get out of it. Things are crazy now and I am saving towards a goal. Okay. And it's like, I just don't know why you put that on me.
Brooke
Completely.
Russell
It's just seems really like a double standard.
Brooke
Yeah.
Whitney
I put it on you because you're the man and you need to get this done.
Alexis
Okay.
Russell
This isn't 1950.
Alexis
I mean, I'm with him on that. Well, we're kind of heading back in.
Brooke
A lot of the legal Ways.
Alexis
So if we get out of that conversation, I mean maybe Russell, you just have a better like you have a plan of how you guys would hang out and maybe that would change your mind.
Brooke
That's a good idea. You know we can move forward from this.
Alexis
Yeah. Like how would you guys hang out if you both live at your parents house?
Whitney
That's a really good question.
Russell
That is a good question.
Brooke
I mean, as the man, how would you step up and provide a place to hang out for her?
Russell
I mean we could go on dates, get to know one another and then go, go to the coast. You know, my parents travel a lot. There's a lot of times where they're not going to be home.
Alexis
Now we're getting to a real solution. High School 2.0.
Brooke
Yeah. Get the house to yourself one time. Or if they are home, tie a bandana around the doorknob and tell mom and dad to go watch a movie.
Alexis
That's probably a thing in Jeffrey's house.
DSW Voice
It's the sad part.
Brooke
We've got a lot of colorful bandanas that mean a whole lot.
Alexis
I feel like his mom uses it more than he does though.
Brooke
I'm like, well I'm not going in that room. No, it's happening in there. It seems like you guys have this thing in common. People die to find things that they have in common with people.
Alexis
In the dating world if you can leave an hour hanging out in the car and still think that this is a fun person you want to be with, you may be missing out.
Brooke
You don't want to throw that away. That's why we'd love to offer to send you guys out on another date to somewhere outside of both of your parents homes. And we would pay for it if you're up for giving him another chance.
Whitney
Whitney, nothing has changed since the start of this conversation. If he gets out of his parents house, maybe we can talk then.
Alexis
Okay.
Brooke
Sorry Russell, it looks like we're not going to be able to get you a second date here.
Alexis
Parents ruined it again, Jeff.
Russell
Yeah, fine with me.
Brooke
Yeah.
Whitney
Hey, if you have any cute friends that have their own place, let me know.
Brooke
Are you asking Russell that?
Alexis
Yeah, Jose's got his own place.
Brooke
I know a day.
Alexis
Me? Yeah. Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning.
Brooke
What a disappointment. Man. I think she's really not seeing the benefits of this situation.
Alexis
What are the benefits?
Brooke
We're not either. I remember hooking up at my parents place when I was 15. You don't think it's going to be just as exciting when you're 35.
Alexis
It's not no.
Brooke
No sleep. I mean, the parents don't hear as well. They can't run up the stairs as fast. You're able to get away with a lot more.
Alexis
Plus your curfew is probably two hours later than it was in high school.
Brooke
Not to mention free PB and J's. As many as you can eat after you're done fooling around. You have to fuel up. Plus parents always have a stocked fridge.
Alexis
I would always I was actually like telling her not to be so judgy, but after that I actually might move.
Brooke

Brooke and Jeffrey: Second Date Update – "I Got My Bullseye On You"
Release Date: December 21, 2024
In this episode of Brooke and Jeffrey: Second Date Update, Brooke and Alexis delve into the intricacies of modern dating by exploring the challenges of securing a second date after a first encounter that didn't go as planned. The episode focuses on Russell's attempt to cultivate a budding relationship with Whitney, highlighting the often-overlooked deal breakers that can derail potential romances.
The episode kicks off with Brooke and Alexis discussing the dichotomy between neurotic, over-planning individuals and the more relaxed, go-with-the-flow types. This sets the stage for Russell's story, who identifies firmly with the laid-back demeanor.
Brooke introduces the concept:
"Second date update there's two types of people that you're gonna meet in the dating world. The neurotic, uptight over planners like Brooke, who have to schedule out every minute of the entire evening months in advance or they won't even have a good time. Is that true, Brooke?" [02:24]
Alexis counters:
"No. I can't show up on time for anything, let alone, like, over plan it. Do you not know me?" [02:42]
This playful banter underscores the show's engaging and humorous tone, setting up Russell's story as a case study for the audience.
Russell shares his experience meeting Whitney at a darts bar, reminiscing about how a simple "how's it going?" led to what he hoped would be a connection. He describes the first date as unconventional—driving around the city without any planned activities, simply enjoying each other's company.
Russell recounts:
"I was at this place with coworkers, and she was part of the group next to us. I just said to her, 'how's it going?' You know, that's it." [04:47]
The date lasted about an hour and a half, filled with conversations about family, work, and personal interests, with both parties laughing and sharing stories.
Russell adds:
"It wasn't as awkward as it sounds. We're talking about our family, our lives, our work. She was laughing. I was laughing." [07:00]
Despite the friendly atmosphere, the date lacked conventional elements like dinner or drinks, leading to Russell feeling uncertain about the connection.
As Brooke and Alexis dissect the date, a significant issue emerges: both Russell and Whitney live with their parents. Whitney expresses that living with her parents is a deal breaker for continuing the relationship, despite Russell also residing with his family.
Whitney states:
"He needs to have his own place. He needs to be able to provide." [12:54]
This declaration shocks Russell, especially when it’s revealed that Whitney herself also lives at home. The conversation highlights a double standard in expectations.
Russell reacts:
"I think this is completely ridiculous. Like, we should be closer to one another because we have the same situation. We're trying to get out of it, and I am saving towards a goal." [16:00]
Brooke points out the irony:
"What we're learning here is the reason that you're not going out with Russell is because he lives with his family, even though you also live with your family." [15:03]
In a bold move, Brooke and Alexis decide to call Whitney live on air to get her perspective. This segment introduces a real-time twist, offering immediate insights and resolutions.
Brooke introduces the call:
"We're gonna call Whitney. Let's dial her number and see if she picks up. Here we go." [10:30]
Whitney confirms:
"Hello?" [10:51]
Brooke explains the show's premise:
"We're a morning radio show called Brooke and Jeffrey in the Morning. This segment is called a Second Date Update. We're trying to help listeners get another date after they went out with someone one time." [11:07]
During the call, Whitney candidly discusses her view on Russell's living situation, emphasizing the importance of independence and financial stability. However, the twist reveals that Whitney herself also resides with her parents, creating a clear conflict in her standards.
Whitney shares:
"He lives with his parents. He's not stable. He's codependent on his parents." [12:54]
The revelation that Whitney also lives with her parents leads to an awkward and humorous discussion about the practicality of dating under such circumstances.
Brooke summarizes:
"Why do you always bring them down right before we do this? Why do you always do that?" [09:55]
Despite attempts to brainstorm solutions, such as suggesting dates away from their parents' homes, Whitney remains steadfast in her decision. The hosts humorously acknowledge the improbability of overcoming this obstacle, ultimately informing Russell that a second date is off the table.
Brooke concludes:
"Sorry Russell, it looks like we're not going to be able to get you a second date here." [17:53]
Whitney adds a closing remark:
"Hey, if you have any cute friends that have their own place, let me know." [17:56]
Compatibility Beyond Interests: Russell and Whitney's shared interest in darts and casual conversation initially suggested compatibility. However, underlying issues like living arrangements significantly impact relationship potential.
Deal Breakers Matter: Living with parents was a crucial deal breaker for Whitney, despite mutual circumstances. It highlights how personal standards and expectations can create barriers even when situations are similar.
