Brooke
Hey, it's Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning. Starting your week with a brand new second date episode. Thanks for being here today. You never know who you're gonna meet. Especially if it's a sexy shoe salesman. Oh yeah, what a team. Better get those toes done before you buy shoes. Next. Just saying. Because one lady definitely met that guy. So we're gonna hear that in just a second. But first comments. Yep. Or okay, prepare for this one. I'm gon warn you, it's a long one.
Redfin Advertiser
No, you'll see.
Brooke
Hey guys. Ruby from Sydney, Australia. I've been listening for about two years now every morning on my way to work. But two days ago I crashed my car and nearly died while listening to the Sunset Scribbles episode. But after it happened, all I could hear was laughter from all of you while it was blasting from my car and it was so loud I couldn't help but laugh and cry at the same time. It really helped me in that moment. Thank you guys.
Jeffrey
Absolutely. Upside down in your car. I'm just going.
Brooke
I'm reading this cuz she commented, I'm assuming alive and well and okay, but in a hospital bed in a full cat. Yeah, I don't know. But Ruby, we hope you're okay. We hope you're okay. I always think about that like if I were to ever crash my car and like there was a song playing, would I always associate that song?
Jeffrey
I'd probably have a sports radio talk on in the most boring way to my life.
Brooke
So hopefully you don't associate us with that now. Yeah.
Claire
Yeah.
Brooke
All right.
Jeffrey
With us.
Brooke
I hope you're on those good pain meds.
Dan
Okay.
Claire
Yeah.
Brooke
Ruby, get well and thanks for being here. Your brand new episode starts right now.
Redfin Advertiser
Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning second date update.
Jeffrey
When you meet someone special, what's the first thing that usually draws you in? Their eyes.
Brooke
Oh. Their laugh.
Jeffrey
Their hair. Their laughs.
Brooke
Yeah.
Jeffrey
Speak for yourself. No, today it's their feet.
Brooke
We're gonna start here. They usually end up here in the end.
Jeffrey
I'm not trying to be creepy about it. The reason that I bring it up is because our listener, Claire, says she met a guy that she's interested in at a shoe store.
Brooke
Oh, she's like the modern day Cinderella.
Jeffrey
Could be. Claire, does it ever go through your mind that shoe stores are the hotspots for all the pervs? It's where they congregate.
Claire
No, I don't think so.
Jeffrey
Okay. You don't hang out at the shoe stores that I hang out at. So clearly, everybody, shoes.
Brooke
I've never had a weird interaction at a shoe store, Jeff, so I think this may be just you.
Jeffrey
Oh, I will give you some addresses that will change how you. But okay, maybe this is a different type of shoe place. So tell us about how you met this guy. What's his name, by the way?
Claire
Yeah, mine wasn't pervy at all. His name was Dan.
Dan
Okay.
Claire
Met him while I was basically. He wasn't actually helping me. He was helping this girl that was next to me.
Brooke
Actually, he's an employee there.
Jeffrey
Or is he just a random guy that goes around helping people?
Claire
No, he was super sweet. He actually does work there.
Jeffrey
Okay, that's all right.
Claire
Like I said, he wasn't helping me directly, but he was helping a woman that was next to me. And every time he would go get her some shoes, he kind of would, like, chat up with me a little bit and, like, be like, oh, those shoes look great. You know, I mean, like.
Brooke
I mean, out of all the departments you could work in, it would be the easiest to meet someone in the shoe department because you're just there longer. Like, you're saying, like, you're waiting for other shoes to come back from the back.
Jeffrey
Yeah, and your shoes are off, so it's not like you can, like, get up and leave.
Claire
You're kind of stuck there, you guys. He was really nice. He was like.
Brooke
And more than just like, I make commission nice.
Claire
Like, I mean, that was the best part. I wasn't his customer. He wasn't making any commission off me.
Brooke
Did you make a move?
Claire
Yeah. Here's the thing. I went up to go buy my shoes, and I told the girl that was checking me out. I actually gave her my number and said, can you give it to that guy over there? That shoe guy over there? And she did.
Jeffrey
Wow.
Claire
I thought, you know, why the heck not? I never find anybody in the wild anymore. We see dating apps, you know, What?
Brooke
I mean, this is great.
Jeffrey
Feet stores are better than Tinder. Now. Who would have thought we'd gotten to that point in life? But we made it. It came full circle.
Dan
Jeff.
Jeffrey
This is awesome. So did he reach out to you?
Claire
He did. He totally reached out to me. And he suggested a Mexican place, A Hole in the Wall. It was really nice.
Jeffrey
Nice. Did you get the fajitas? Like, how much attention did you want? Jose wants to ask specifically about the menu. We do know that.
Brooke
See, all I wanted to know is how many margaritas she had, because that's going to be.
Jeffrey
Was this like a lunch date or, like a happy hour type of date?
Claire
It was more of a happy hour.
Dan
Okay.
Jeffrey
How was the connection between you and Dan?
Claire
I thought it ended up being very natural. I was very happy. Like, I left.
Jeffrey
Okay, Was that Dan or was that the margaritas, though? That was.
Brooke
Why can't it be both?
Jeffrey
That's true. But maybe something specific about Dan that happened that made you happy.
Claire
It was really playful between us. I felt really good. And at one point, we were feeding each other chips and salsa. So.
Jeffrey
Little messy.
Dan
Yeah.
Claire
But it was kind of sweet. It was really sweet.
Jeffrey
That is cute. Okay. That was, like a romantic move.
Claire
It was.
Brooke
You got to know who started that?
Jeffrey
Who's the first person?
Claire
I kind of started it. I kind of wanted to, like, show him that I was playful. And he reciprocated.
Jeffrey
So you see that in romantic movies where, like, at a certain point they feed each other, like an hors d' oeuvre or something.
Brooke
I don't know if I've ever met anyone outside of my toddlers. I really, truly can't think of making
Jeffrey
a cake and you put some frosting on your husband's nose and you guys have a frosting fight.
Brooke
No, Maybe I'm not romantic enough.
Jeffrey
I mean, don't you think it would be nice at our next show dinner if at one point we all just stopped and fed the person to our. Right. Put a sushi roll in the next person's mouth.
Brooke
I'm sick. I can't go. Sorry.
Jeffrey
Okay, well, just the three of us, then.
Brooke
Well, it doesn't matter what we think or do. It's that you liked it, and you think Dan liked it because then he fed you. Right. That's the indicator that he was into it.
Claire
He did feed me back. Yeah. It wasn't just me feeding him. Yeah.
Brooke
Be careful with sharp tortilla chips.
Jeffrey
Yeah. You have a gum or. All right, I mean, this is sounding pretty good. How does the date end?
Claire
So Basically, we got to know each other, we talked about our jobs, and then when we left, he walked me to my car, obviously, but he did not try to kiss me, which, you know what I was.
Sophia Bush
Brooke's outraged.
Brooke
Well, I am. The only reason I say what is you just fed each other. You would think that, like.
Jeffrey
But you feed your toddler, you're intimately
Brooke
connected in a different type of way. Right?
Claire
Yeah, I totally know what you guys are saying, but I was actually okay with it. I don't really like the kiss on the first date.
Brooke
All right, yeah, that's read you right. So that's good.
Jeffrey
So even if he had gone for the kiss, you would have said no?
Claire
60% no.
Brooke
Okay, 60%.
Jeffrey
All right. So that's how you left it. What's happened since then?
Claire
Not a whole lot has happened. I've texted him and he just kind of hearts my text. I'm kind of confused.
Jeffrey
Well, it started off so great. I don't. I can't imagine what would have made him not want to kiss you and not want to call you back. So let's try to figure that out for you. Maybe she wore a really ugly pair of shoes on the date.
Brooke
Well, I bet he is judgy about shoes. It's a good point.
Jeffrey
We'll find out.
Brooke
Some people think a shoe says everything about a person.
Jeffrey
I don't know who those people are, but we'll find out if your shoes weren't sexy enough when we come back. And do your second date update right after this. Hold on.
Redfin Advertiser
Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning. Second date update.
Jeffrey
How does that romantic saying go? Couples who love each other feed each other.
Brooke
I've never heard that. Is that something that's hanging in your kitchen?
Jeffrey
It should be one of those cute
Brooke
little laugh love signs.
Jeffrey
Our listener Claire is well on her way to that because on her first hangout with Dan the shoe salesman, they were hand feeding each other chips and salsa at a Mexican restaurant. And you don't do that on a first date unless there's an obvious connection happening. Not to mention the flowing margaritas. Probably. Yeah.
Brooke
I mean, I do think we have to send them to an Italian restaurant if they go out again just so they can lady and tramp some spaghetti. Maybe it's kind of their thing.
Jeffrey
Or a breadstick. Oh, yeah. There was no kiss at the end of the date. So, Brooke, what's running through your mind? Why wouldn't she be getting the call for date number two here?
Brooke
God, it's so hard to know anymore. I mean, how single was this Guy like you met him out in the wild. Did you do any Internet research on him?
Claire
I mean, he doesn't really have social
Jeffrey
media, so you've already had your hands in each other's mouths at this point. So what could be stopping him from wanting a little bit more of that?
Brooke
Why? Is it going in?
Claire
Yeah.
Jeffrey
At least a finger or two. A finger and a thumb. I gotta get my thumb in there, push it all the way to the back. I don't know how you do it, Claire. Let's just call Dan and we'll see if he picks up and hopefully has some answers for us. You ready?
Claire
Thanks, guys. Yeah.
Dan
Yeah.
Jeffrey
I think she's kind of over us at this point.
Brooke
So people by this point in the call regret their decision. Perfect.
Jeffrey
We're right on track. Let's dial his number. Here we go.
Dan
Hello?
Jeffrey
Hey, is this Dan?
Dan
Yeah, who's this?
Jeffrey
Hey, man. This is a radio show called Brooke and Jeffrey in the Morning. How you doing?
Claire
Hey, Dan.
Brooke
Hi.
Jeffrey
What up, Dan? Good morning, brother.
Dan
Okay, why are you calling?
Jeffrey
We're calling because we're doing a segment. It's a really popular one called the Second Date Update. Not sure if you're familiar with that.
Dan
Okay, so. But why are you calling, though?
Jeffrey
So the way that the segment works, the Second Date Update, is we're trying to help out one of our listeners who went out with you recently says she had a really nice time and is confused why there hasn't been a second hang.
Dan
Oh, okay.
Jeffrey
Okay. So this is a woman named Claire.
Dan
Yeah, sure. Of course.
Jeffrey
You say, wow.
Brooke
Interesting.
Jeffrey
So what was your. What was your take on Claire?
Dan
Claire's really nice. Claire's really sweet. I had a good time with Claire.
Brooke
That's awesome.
Jeffrey
I don't know.
Dan
It's a bit of a mixed bag for me, really.
Brooke
I mean, were you. Were you impressed when she was the one that gave her number to your friend at work?
Dan
Yeah. That was nice. You know, that's not something that happens all the time. That made me feel good.
Jeffrey
Okay, cute, but you used the term. It was a mixed bag. Usually that's like good and bad.
Dan
Well, there's nothing bad. She didn't do anything bad. Let me be clear about that. I'm just a little. A little more of a maybe.
Jeffrey
What's making it a maybe and not a definite? Yes.
Dan
So, like, when we're walking to the table, I felt someone touch my back.
Brooke
Yeah.
Dan
And she was like, hold on. She adjusted my collar. She just. My shirt collar was a little crooked. Okay.
Brooke
I mean, I could see how Some people would be. Because you just met her, Right?
Dan
Like, it was fine. I appreciated it. I just. I noted that, like, oh, this person is very comfortable with me right away. And I just, like, you know, we had just met, but it was sweet.
Brooke
Okay.
Jeffrey
Yeah.
Brooke
Okay, so this isn't a bad check yet.
Dan
Yeah, none of these are bad chicks. I just don't know how to take it.
Jeffrey
You're just noting. Was there anything else?
Dan
So we order our food, and they bring the chips and salsa.
Jeffrey
Yeah, we heard a little bit about the chips and salsa. Tell us about it.
Dan
Oh, you did?
Jeffrey
We did. She said that you two fed each other.
Dan
Yes. Yeah, she fed me, and I fed her back. But mostly Deb was just, like. I thought it was pretty funny.
Jeffrey
Okay.
Brooke
So again, it's interesting because I would have thought, you know, you're listing these things and you're just noting them, but you're laughing, and you sound like you're remembering the moments fondly.
Dan
I'm laughing because when we were finished, she takes her napkin and she wipes a little bit of salsa from the corner of my mouth.
Jeffrey
She takes her napkin and wipes your face with it?
Dan
Yeah.
Jeffrey
What was your take on that?
Dan
I was surprised by it. I laughed out loud. I can't remember the last time somebody wiped my face for me.
Brooke
Probably your mother did it.
Jeffrey
I didn't want to say that.
Dan
Okay.
Jeffrey
But did she ask, like, hey, you've got something there, or did she just go in for it?
Dan
So she, like, said, oh, you got a little something, and just, like, went
Jeffrey
and did it as she's doing it? Yeah.
Brooke
All right.
Jeffrey
You know, it's funny because you can see this kind of person, she's just comfortable with you. She's trying to be kind, but you're crossing a boundary, potentially. Right?
Dan
Yeah. It wasn't that boundaries were crossed. It was just that I just wasn't there yet. We were still just getting to know each other.
Brooke
Yeah.
Dan
And then she's, like, putting my napkin on my lap for me.
Jeffrey
Oh, geez.
Brooke
Well, you don't want a little smothering.
Jeffrey
Okay. But you don't want a dirty lap. So I could see why she did
Brooke
that, but she cares, you know? Like, she's doing sweet things.
Dan
Totally. I get that. And no other girl would ever do that for me or ever has done that for me.
Jeffrey
Oh, she stands out. That's sweet. I mean, she's looking out for you. She's watching over you. Even listening in on this phone call. Call to make sure that you're okay. Right now, she's there always.
Dan
Oh, that makes sense.
Brooke
Really? Does it? You think it fits with everything else?
Jeffrey
Because I'm serious.
Dan
No, I mean, I just didn't. That she's on the phone. Of course she is. I didn't think about that.
Jeffrey
Yeah, she's really there, Claire.
Claire
I did hear all of it. And you know what? I do like hearing the voice of my dirty little Danny on the phone.
Dan
Danny.
Brooke
Wait, do you know. Wait, Dan, do you know that. That nickname already?
Dan
Yeah, she was using it at the restaurant.
Jeffrey
What the heck?
Bowen Yang
Dirty Danny.
Jeffrey
Is it like a. Like a dirty. Like a sexy thing or is it.
Dan
No, it was like when she went to wipe my mouth, she was like, oh, that's my dirty little Danny. And then it just came back throughout the night.
Brooke
Oh, she said it in like a turned on tone, though.
Jeffrey
Interesting. You know what? There's a lot happening. We should step back from this and let you two talk to each other. So Claire, talk to dirty Dan for you.
Claire
You should know that I obviously like you because I don't do that with everyone. And I want to say that I know that I untucked your shirt at one point, but why? Because he ate a little too much. And I could tell
Jeffrey
you the little
Brooke
big guy that is the un. Like that is.
Jeffrey
I like her more.
Brooke
Now you untuck it to take the shirt off. I mean, at some point in the date, but not.
Jeffrey
But what does Dan think of that?
Dan
That was actually. That was funny. What?
Jeffrey
You like that?
Brooke
If a man came over and unbuttoned my pants because they look all tight after I feel I'm going to tell you, it is not going over.
Jeffrey
Somebody shouldn't have had that six slice of pizza. Here we go. Untouch your shirt. Slap your belly. Oh, my God. But you don't sound totally opposed to it.
Dan
That's why I was telling you guys. It's like a mixed bag. Like, we do kind of fit in certain ways.
Jeffrey
Okay, I do see what you mean. You like being doted on just a tiny bit or you're just thinking, do
Brooke
I like this Doted on or mothered? I don't know. But even mothered, I don't do that for my kids.
Jeffrey
I know. That's where it crosses the line with this dirty Danny so stuff. It's like right in the middle, you
Claire
know, like I told you guys, I want to be married and I want to be a mom one day.
Jeffrey
Oh, the instincts. Yeah, the maternal instincts are kicking in early.
Brooke
I'm going to tell you post kids, you're going to feel very Differently about also having to mother a man.
Claire
I. I guess you're right. I mean, here's the thing. I just truly believe that we do need to spend more time together, Dan. So I guess I'm sorry I untucked your shirt if you didn't like it, but I thought I was being helpful. That's all I'm going to.
Dan
Wow.
Jeffrey
Claire is just laying it out there, Dan. She really wants to see you again. And if you're willing to give her one more chance, we would pay for that date.
Brooke
I will say, I. It does sound like she's hearing you on some of these boundaries.
Dan
Totally. And it's on. It's partly on me for not speaking up, but. Claire, I would love to go on another date with you, provided you that you understand that I just, like. I'm a little bit of a slow mover and I'm going to have to, like, get to know somebody a lot more before I just like to. Oh, this is a person for me. Whoa.
Jeffrey
Using his big boy voice to lay down boundaries early in the relationship. Claire.
Claire
Totally understandable. I just want to let you know I did hold back a little bit on this date. I almost put the straw to your lips for the margarita, and I chose not to
Brooke
look at that restraint. Dan.
Dan
Hey, you know what? I sense that I saw you go for my drink and then pull away from me.
Claire
There you go.
Jeffrey
Okay.
Brooke
It's gonna be interesting to see where this goes.
Jeffrey
Yeah. But it sounds like this is a success. We're gonna send you two out one more time. And Dirty Dan, you're gonna have to behave yourself.
Brooke
I don't think she wants him to behave himself. I think that's what gets her excited.
Claire
Danny, I'll be watching you.
Jeffrey
Oh, God.
Brooke
One, two.
Dan
I love it. This is funny.
Jeffrey
Oh, God.
Claire

Avocados from Mexico, always good. Well, this just goes to prove there's a relationship out there that works for everyone, apparently. Because I guarantee nine out of 10 times we make that call, the dude would say she was a weirdo, she was trying to mother me and doesn't see the fun side of it.

Yeah. But I think she's gonna let him know that he does like it. Yeah.

In this Second Date Update episode, Brooke and Jeffrey help listener Claire unravel why her promising first date with Dan—a shoe salesman she met “in the wild”—ended in radio silence. The hosts guide Claire through sharing her story, then call Dan directly to get his candid take. The episode blends humor and genuine curiosity as the team navigates playful boundaries, mixed signals, and Claire’s distinctive, hands-on approach to showing affection.
Claire describes meeting Dan while buying shoes—he was a store employee helping another customer but chatted with Claire during the process.
Claire clarifies it wasn’t a “pervy” situation; Dan was sweet and professional.
Claire made the first move, asking the cashier to pass her number to Dan.
Dan reached out to Claire and suggested a local Mexican spot for happy hour.
The date was “natural” and playful, highlighted by mutual feeding of chips and salsa, making for a unique and intimate moment.
The hosts banter about the unusual nature of feeding on a first date, comparing it to movies or toddlers.
The date ended with Dan walking Claire to her car—no kiss—but Claire was okay with no first-date kiss.
Afterwards, Dan only “hearted” texts, leaving Claire confused about the lack of follow-through.
Adjusting His Collar:
Chips & Salsa Feeding:
Wiping His Face:
Napkin on Lap & Shirt Untucking:
Dan insists these gestures weren’t necessarily “bad,” but he wasn’t ready for that level of physical caretaking on a first date.
