Hey, it's the second date podcast and we got a brand new one for you today with Brooke and Jeffrey, of course. We are the home of the second date update. And I just gotta say that the end of today's date may be the most shocking thing we've ever heard.
Jeffrey
Really?
Brooke
I don't know. It's just like I don't know who I'm more upset for. Her or him. Yeah.
Leah
Messy or both of them.
Brooke
So definitely stay till the end because it will reward you now.
Jeffrey
I will too. Brooke.
Brooke
Yeah, we got a great message on our Instagram actually from Leah. She DM'd us and said, Hey, I found your show on TikTok a few months back and started listening to the second date updates. Went through every single one I could find online. Yes. And didn't think it could get better. But the new episodes with the friendly vibe and the four of you is so nice to listen to.
Lawrence
Yeah.
Brooke
So, hey, thanks for being here and sticking with us through it all. So listen, we love it when you, like, subscribe. And don't forget, we got that second eight merch for sale. It's only for a limited time, so do not live in regret. Click the link in the show notes and order now. Now let's get your second date started.
April
Second date update. Here's a dilemma you might face in the dating world. Let's say you have a hot date scheduled, okay? But the day of, you are just out of it. Whether you're sick or you're jet lagged or just depressed because of what happened on Love island earlier. Whatever it is, you know you're not in the best shape. Do you cancel? You reschedule. Do you ask a friend to sub in that night for you?
Brooke
Is that option a lot of things.
Jeffrey
You could do but are good for me, bro. Yeah, I wasn't.
April
But I bring it up because one of our listeners knew he wasn't in peak form for date night and now he needs our help. His name is Lawrence. So, Lawrence, welcome to the show.
Lawrence
Hey, thanks for having me.
Brooke
Yeah, zero to 100. Where you at right now?
Lawrence
Oh, I'm like a 20. I don't know. 19.
Brooke
Oh, you're still on. Oh, wow.
April
Wow. Most people don't. Brooke doesn't normally ask people to rate themselves on attractiveness. On a scale of 1 to 100.
Brooke
It was like, how he was feeling, Jen.
Jeffrey
Okay, okay. Before we move, on a scale of 1 to 10,000.
April
All right, enough with the rating scales. Tell us. You said in your email that you knew you weren't in the best form the night of your day. Why did you say that?
Lawrence
So the day before, I had gotten back from this bachelor party in Vegas and it was crazy.
Brooke
Oh, no, you were hungover.
Leah
I feel way less bad.
Lawrence
Yeah, that is.
Leah
I'm sorry. This is different.
Brooke
Why would you schedule a date the day after a bachelor party?
Lawrence
Yeah, I really thought this girl was cute. And I thought it was my only shot, really. Just wanted to meet her where she was at.
Brooke
And you were going to be a responsible guy at that bachelor party in Vegas?
Lawrence
Yeah, it was the plan, but obviously I didn't follow through.
Leah
This is like when you have a Pilates class the morning after a night out. You know, you're like, I'm gonna make it.
Brooke
So there's more at stake when it comes to a date.
Leah
Those classes are expensive to cancel.
April
But at the same time, if you feel like this is my one chance to actually go out with this really cool person, you're not gonna skip or, like, pass on it. You're gonna do whatever it takes.
Lawrence
Yeah.
April
So I. I get why you would go out with her, but the Vegas thing from the night before, you were sleep deprived. That's what you were trying to tell.
Jeffrey
Us on top of.
Lawrence
Took forever to get a ride home from the airport. When I finally get home, I ended up staying up editing my fantasy baseball lineup, which was not a good choice.
Jeffrey
Hey, dude. You know, I just had one too, so I don't blame him at all. Guys, it takes an hour to edit your lineup.
Brooke
The sympathy I had is gone now.
Leah
Yeah, Jeff set it up like you were gonna get really sick or something out of your control happened.
Lawrence
Yeah, I know.
Brooke
I had some food poisoning. He stayed up all night. Do we know?
April
Maybe he was sick on top of all of this.
Lawrence
Look, I came in last place last year.
April
That can't happen again, ok? You can understand.
Brooke
This is so dumb.
Lawrence
And then I finally get to sleep and my dog woke me up in the middle of the night for no reason.
Leah
People complain.
April
Tell us, what did you do with April? What was Your date idea?
Lawrence
I ended up taking her to a bowling alley. I did it on purpose because it was noisy and, you know, I wanted to get some of my energy up, and I took some of the focus off of me.
Jeffrey
Wouldn't that suck?
Brooke
I mean, the thing is, you can have a couple beers, feel a little bit better. I mean, I get your thought, you know, like, you don't have to be the entertainment because you're not up for that. Right?
Lawrence
Exactly.
Brooke
You know, as soon as she turns around to throw a strike, you could just take a little nap.
April
So tell us, how was the vibe between you and April?
Lawrence
It was good. If I remembered anything that she said or, like, anything besides the inside of my eyelids.
Brooke
Okay, anytime someone says it was good, but I don't remember anything she said.
Lawrence
I'm exaggerating a little bit. I remember some of it, but I just remember being really tired and not being okay.
Brooke
What do you remember?
Jeffrey
Kind of spacing out a little.
Lawrence
I remember we ended up having some greasy food, had some laughs, and then after that, we left, and I was walking out of the bowling alley, and as she was leaving, I guess she thought I was funny or something. So she was like, do you want to get another drink somewhere else?
April
Okay, that's a good sign.
Brooke
That's a great sign.
Lawrence
And my mouth said yes, but my body was like, hell, no.
Jeffrey
She could just tell.
April
Yeah, my mouth does stuff that my brain never agrees to all the time. So.
Brooke
I see where you're coming from.
April
I know, but, you know, it's life. Okay? You're going out for another drink, even though you don't really feel up for it.
Jeffrey
Or did you go home?
Lawrence
No, we went out for another drink. We went to this cute little bourbon bar that she'd been dying to go to, and we had a couple more drinks.
Brooke
Is this a moment of regret? Like things had gone well. You should have just chopped it up to a victory.
Lawrence
Yeah, that would have been smart. I just wanted to do anything that she suggested because she was so cute.
Jeffrey
Yeah, you were happy.
Leah
Did she know you were at a bachelor party the night before?
Lawrence
No, I didn't tell her that because I didn't want her to get the wrong idea about what we were doing there.
Jeffrey
Oh, yeah, it does sound a little.
Brooke
Why would that be the wrong. I don't get it.
Lawrence
It was chill. We just played topgolf and drank.
April
But sure you did.
Lawrence
Honestly, that's not what people think of when they say bachelor party, right?
April
Yeah, lots of glitter at those topgolf places. It gets on your on your neck and on your clothes. He's really tired, so he thinks I'm fine. Anyway, let's fast forward to the end when you and April left each other. How did that go?
Lawrence
So we were leaving the little Bourbon bar and I walked her to her car and we had a nice hug and that felt good. And then I went home and I slept for 15 hours.
Brooke
15 feels so good.
April
Yeah, it really.
Lawrence
Yeah, it felt so good. But then when I woke up and I texted her, she didn't answer. And then she hasn't answered me since.
Brooke
Okay.
Lawrence
That's why I contacted you guys, so you can call her and find out what's up.
April
Okay.
Brooke
And she hasn't even gotten the full you. You know, like if she liked tonight, that night when you're on. It's gonna be great.
April
Yeah, let's do that for you. We're gonna reach out to April. You get about three minutes to take a quick nap. So you're at a hundred percent. When we come back, everybody.
Jeffrey
The listeners do.
April
Yeah, we'll all do it. And then full energy for our second date update when we continue right after this. Hold on. Second date update. This. This second aid update is brought to you by our new sponsor, Holy Sheet Mattress and Pillow Emporium. Heavenly comfort at unholy prices. If you're severely hungover from a raucous bachelor party in Vegas, get horizontal and recharge in one of our premium queen size mattresses equipped with rubber sheets for an extra fee. See? Missed opportunity. If we actually had a sponsor like.
Brooke
That, you know, you should send that to the sales department. I'm sure that they will be on it on the ph. Holy sheets, as we say really should.
April
Second date update was built for a mattress store sponsor, but if you missed it, our listener Lawrence was dead tired going into his date night with April after his bachelor party experience. But he powered through. And the hangout at the bowling alley in the Bourbon Bar was fun. At least the parts that he can remember from that. But we're going to try and step up and save it for him.
Lawrence
Here's the deal, guys. April, super cute. I don't know if I did something wrong or she got back together with like an ex or something.
Brooke
Okay, I don't think that's my man. I mean, I. I think that maybe a good area of growth for you would be maybe admitting when you made a mistake.
April
Okay, It's a second date update, not a therapy.
Brooke
Well, I'm just saying you played victim a lot to those fantasy baseball teams. Victim to the Bachelor.
Leah
Nothing is more unattractive than someone playing victim to stuff like that. I am with you there.
Brooke
Like, those are your choices, and you made bad ones, and that's fine.
Lawrence
And maybe I made a bad decision coming to this. I don't need to hear this from my mom.
Brooke
Okay, Lauren, slow it down. You. That was my thoughts, and that was my honest thought.
April
Well, maybe you can sugarcoat them a little bit for our lovely listeners.
Brooke
If people want advice, they need to be open to criticism.
Jeffrey
Anyone that comes on our show does know.
April
All right?
Lawrence
You know, bottom line, I don't think she knew I was tired. I think it's something else. Something else I did wrong.
Jeffrey
Really?
April
Okay, there we go.
Brooke
All right. See? And that's being open. And I appreciate there's other options, the.
April
Optimism that we've been waiting for for the first three minutes. Now, let's just dial your date, April. We'll see if she answers, and hopefully we can get some information out of her. Here we go. Dialing it right now.
Listener
Hello?
April
Hey, is this April?
Listener
This is she. Who's this?
April
Hey, April. We're actually an entire morning radio show called Brooke and Jeffrey in the Morning.
Brooke
Welcome to the show, April.
Jeffrey
Good morning.
Listener
Hi. Am I on the air right now?
April
You sure are. With the most positive and optimistic, uplifting show that you will ever talk to.
Brooke
Yes, that's what we're known for.
April
It is.
Listener
Okay, what's going on? What is this?
April
Well, this is a segment that we do called Second Date Update. I don't know if you've ever heard of that before, but basically it's where we try to help our listeners get back in touch with somebody after going on a great first date with them.
Jeffrey
Why not necessarily great?
Brooke
Well. Well, I mean, we hope that it's great. Right?
Listener
Okay.
April
Sorry, Yeah. I didn't say who we. Who you went out with the other night. It's one of our. Our friends named Lawrence.
Listener
Ah, okay.
Brooke
Right. You guys went bowling. Ooh. Yeah, right?
April
She means that not sarcastically in any way.
Brooke
I didn't actually mean sarcasm, though, at all.
April
Exactly.
Brooke
It sounded like a fun night.
April
We're wondering to get your perspect on how the whole evening went.
Listener
Fine. It was mostly. Mostly fine.
Brooke
Mostly fine. Okay, okay, like, mostly fine. Like I'm planning on calling him back.
Listener
I mean, I don't know. I just. I'm mostly like. This is kind of strange to be, like, blasting out on the radio. You know what I mean?
April
Totally.
Jeffrey
Yeah, we get that.
April
Yeah. And all we're really looking for is to help out Lawrence because He is a little bit confused.
Listener
Okay, Well, I mean, look, most of the date was positive. He's a fun guy. He's cute, good.
April
Okay.
Listener
But I mean, I'm surprised that he doesn't know. Like, I mean, I think there was a point where we kind of. At least I definitely couldn't. And I thought he probably also felt we could not come back from.
Jeffrey
It's never good when someone says, us.
Brooke
Yeah, you can't come back from.
April
Could you tell us more about that?
Listener
It was pretty bad.
Brooke
Uh. Oh.
Jeffrey
Oh, no. I say, oh, no.
Brooke
Cause I don't know if he knows.
April
Yeah.
Listener
All right, well, we went out to, you know, whatever. We were out for the whole night. And he walks me to my car.
Brooke
Okay. So this is the very, very end of the evening.
Listener
It's the very end of the evening. And, like, things had gone well. We were certainly flirty.
Brooke
And at that point, were you, like, hoping for a kiss or like, how.
Listener
Well, that's the vibe I was getting for sure. And then we get to my car, and he just kind of stands there, and I'm like, okay, I'll make the first move. I lean in to kiss him.
Brooke
Yeah.
Listener
And he was very, like, what I thought was polite, like, just, like, being very gentle. And he's just kind of, like, not really doing too much with the kissing. And then it's kind of just, like, not much is happening at all.
April
He's a bad.
Listener
And then I opened my eyes. Oh, yeah, you could say that. Because when I open my eyes, I realize that he's sleeping. He has fallen asleep.
Brooke
Wait, standing up?
Listener
I mean, he was kind of leaning against my car, but he was out.
April
He fell asleep mid kiss.
Jeffrey
Who's the bad kiss or him or.
Leah
You can't focus a lot.
Brooke
Okay, when did he wake up?
Listener
When I was like, dude, are you asleep? And then he just kind of, like, opened his eyes and laughed a little bit and was like, okay, see ya.
April
Oh, God.
Brooke
I don't know if.
Lawrence
Hey. Hey, April. This is a little awkward, but are you sure?
April
We kissed. Oh, shit. Okay.
Lawrence
Yeah, I thought it was just, like, a super wait.
Listener
Is that him?
April
Yeah, sorry.
Listener
Is he on this call?
April
The way the segment works is we have the other person waiting on hold on the other line to talk to you. And normally we call them in, but I think he felt like he had to say something.
Listener
Lawrence, are you joking me right now? He's been listening this whole time.
Brooke
He needed to hear it. He really did.
Jeffrey
He doesn't even remember kissing you.
April
Yeah, Lawrence, you didn't bring up anything about a first kiss when we talked.
Lawrence
To you because I thought it was a super long hug. I don't know.
Listener
My God. This is exactly. This is exactly what I'm talking about. This is humiliating.
Brooke
No, don't, don't. It's embarrassing to him, not to you.
Leah
It's actually impressive. You can fall.
Brooke
Yeah. Lawrence, you've got to explain to her.
Lawrence
Oh. Oh. Here's what you don't know. Okay.
Brooke
Oh, God.
Lawrence
I went to a bachelor party the night before in Vegas. And then when I got back, finally, I was up until like four in the morning editing my fantasy baseball live.
Brooke
Yeah.
April
Okay.
Lawrence
I didn't really get a lot of rest the night before, but I just thought you were so cute and funny and I just wanted to pack. I really like you and I'm sorry and.
Brooke
Okay.
April
Okay.
Lawrence
It wasn't my best. And I'm over.
Jeffrey
Wrap it up.
April
All right. That was a lot. I wasn't expecting you to say that much, but. April, do you hear what he's saying? He was exhausted from a long trip before.
Listener
Yeah, I mean, I'm hearing him. It sounds like he's super responsible. I mean, fantasy baseball, priorities. No, I get it.
Leah
Well, he showed up to meet.
April
That's true. It was so important for him to meet you that despite how tired he was, he was willing to do that. This anyway.
Jeffrey
That's a good angle.
Brooke
No, if we can spin it that way, I mean, I think more is that he made a mistake and he would love a redo. Right. Because he knows he screwed it up.
Lawrence
Well, I did kiss her, which is better than I thought, so I didn't really screw that up.
April
Yeah, I mean, 99 of the date was awesome.
Listener
You don't remember the kids. You definitely don't get to count it. And no, you're not getting, like, points for that at all.
Brooke
She said you were a bad kisser, dude, because you're basically like kissing a dad.
Leah
Dead person.
Jeffrey
Well, you weren't moving.
April
She was the one who initiated the kiss.
Lawrence
At that point, I was the dead person. But the next time I will be fully alive.
Listener
I mean, he did have pretty nice.
April
Lips, but still, you did stick around for a very long time with a very tired man. Just imagine how great he's going to be when he's fully rested at 100%.
Leah
Gotta be a bowling.
Brooke
I actually agree with Jeff on that. I mean, like, you wanted that kiss at the end of the night. I mean, sure, it was the. The death of the date, but if you could redo it, it may Be great.
April
I bet on the next date he'll even let you change his fantasy baseball lineup for him.
Jeffrey
That is not cool. Don't you.
Brooke
I don't think she wants. She doesn't want that.
April
Okay, you know, okay, maybe that's date three material, but we are interested in date number two. April, he's not lying. We really want you to go out with him again. And we'll pay for it if you say yes.
Listener
I mean, can you promise that you're gonna get a full night's sleep and, like, never, ever tell anybody besides everybody that's list to the show that you fell asleep during our first kiss?
Brooke
It would be a great story to wedding, though.
Lawrence
I will not do that again.
April
All right? The promise is there, April.
Listener
All right, But I'm not paying for a single thing. Not one single thing.
Brooke
Okay?
April
You're like all the women that we have on this show. Congratulations, you two. You're going out again.
Lawrence
Awesome.
April
Alexis, do you approve of this couple?
Brooke
You shipped them. That's cute. You would like a wreck like him.
April

Podcast Summary: Brooke and Jeffrey: Second Date Update – "Eyes Closed Mouth Open"
Episode Information:
In the aptly named episode "Eyes Closed Mouth Open," hosts Brooke and Jeffrey delve into the often tumultuous world of dating mishaps and second chances. Aimed at individuals navigating the tricky aftermath of a first date gone awry, the show promises both high entertainment and insightful commentary. This episode specifically focuses on helping a listener named Lawrence reconnect with his date, April, following a particularly challenging first meeting.
The episode opens with Brooke introducing a common dating dilemma: having a promising date planned but feeling unprepared due to unforeseen circumstances like illness, jet lag, or emotional turmoil. Lawrence, the featured listener, finds himself in this predicament after a hectic bachelor party in Las Vegas left him exhausted and less than his best.
Brooke:
"Here's a dilemma you might face in the dating world. Let's say you have a hot date scheduled, okay? But the day of, you are just out of it."
(00:30)
Lawrence admits that he rated himself a mere 19 out of 100 in terms of readiness and attractiveness, highlighting his lack of confidence heading into the date.
Lawrence:
"Oh, I'm like a 20. I don't know. 19."
(02:23)
Lawrence recounts the events leading up to the date, explaining that the bachelor party was more intense than anticipated. He did not follow through on his intentions to be responsible, instead spending the night editing his fantasy baseball lineup until the early hours.
Lawrence:
"Took forever to get a ride home from the airport. When I finally get home, I ended up staying up editing my fantasy baseball lineup, which was not a good choice."
(03:49)
This lack of rest left him feeling drained but eager to make a good impression on April, whom he found exceptionally cute and funny.
Deciding to divert attention away from his fatigued state, Lawrence chose to take April to a bowling alley followed by a visit to a bourbon bar. His strategy was to use the noisy environment to mask his tiredness and reduce the pressure on himself.
Lawrence:
"I ended up taking her to a bowling alley. I did it on purpose because it was noisy and, you know, I wanted to get some of my energy up, and I took some of the focus off of me."
(04:30)
Despite his efforts, the date was marred by his exhaustion. Lawrence found himself struggling to stay engaged, often spacing out and relying on greasy comfort food to sustain himself.
Lawrence:
"I remember we ended up having some greasy food, had some laughs, and then after that, we left, and I was walking out of the bowling alley, and as she was leaving, I guess she thought I was funny or something."
(05:24)
As the evening concluded, Lawrence and April decided to continue their time together at a cozy bourbon bar. However, his exhaustion caught up with him once more. While attempting to share a kiss with April outside her car, Lawrence inadvertently fell asleep mid-kiss, leaving April confused and amused.
Listener (April):
"It was pretty bad. I mean, he was just, like, not really doing too much with the kissing. And then it's kind of just, like, not much is happening at all."
(12:17)
Upon waking, Lawrence realized the gravity of the situation when April informed him that he had fallen asleep during their kiss.
Lawrence:
"I went to a bachelor party the night before in Vegas. And then when I got back, finally, I was up until like four in the morning editing my fantasy baseball live. I didn't really get a lot of rest the night before, but I just thought you were so cute and funny and I just wanted to pack. I really like you and I'm sorry."
(14:30)
Recognizing Lawrence's distress, Brooke and Jeffrey take it upon themselves to mediate and provide actionable advice. They emphasize the importance of admitting mistakes and showing genuine remorse to rebuild trust with April.
Brooke:
"Maybe I made a bad decision coming to this. I don't need to hear this from my mom."
(09:25)
Brooke:
"If people want advice, they need to be open to criticism."
(09:38)
The hosts encourage Lawrence to reach out sincerely, acknowledging his flaws and demonstrating his commitment to improving for a potential second date.
In a pivotal segment, Brooke and Jeffrey connect with April directly to gain her perspective on the perplexing end to her date with Lawrence. April shares her experience candidly, revealing that while most of the evening was enjoyable, the unexpected sleeping incident left her unsure about Lawrence's interest.
Listener (April):
"We were out for the whole night. And he walks me to my car... I lean in to kiss him. And he was very, like, what I thought was polite, like, just, like, being very gentle. And he's just kind of, like, not really doing too much with the kissing. And then it's kind of just, like, not much is happening at all."
(12:40)
April clarifies that Lawrence did not mention his exhaustion beforehand, leading to misinterpretations of his behavior.
Listener (April):
"He didn't really say anything about how tired he was, so I thought maybe something else was wrong."
(14:09)
After understanding each other's perspectives, Brooke and Jeffrey facilitate a mutual understanding between Lawrence and April. Lawrence apologizes for his lack of communication regarding his fatigue, while April appreciates his effort to meet despite his condition. The episode concludes on a hopeful note, with both parties expressing interest in a second date, this time with improved communication and preparation.
Brooke:
"April, he's not lying. We really want you to go out with him again. And we'll pay for it if you say yes."
(16:44)
April:
"You're like all the women that we have on this show. Congratulations, you two. You're going out again."
(17:07)
"Eyes Closed Mouth Open" serves as a poignant reminder of the complexities inherent in modern dating. Through Lawrence and April's story, Brooke and Jeffrey illustrate the significance of honesty, preparation, and effective communication in fostering meaningful connections. The episode not only provides entertainment but also offers valuable lessons for listeners navigating their romantic endeavors.
Brooke (00:30):
"Let's say you have a hot date scheduled... Do you cancel? You reschedule?"
Lawrence (02:23):
"Oh, I'm like a 20. I don't know. 19."
Lawrence (03:49):
"Editing my fantasy baseball lineup, which was not a good choice."
April (12:17):
"It was pretty bad... he was just not really doing too much with the kissing."
Lawrence (14:30):
"I really like you and I'm sorry."
Brooke (09:38):
"If people want advice, they need to be open to criticism."
Brooke (16:44):
"We'll pay for it if you say yes."
April (17:07):
"Congratulations, you two. You're going out again."
