I gotta say, it takes a lot of courage to come onto this podcast and just, I don't know, reveal all about your dating life.
Jeffrey
I mean, you know, just to come on and say hi and bye.
Brooke
I mean, if you say it the wrong way, we might start teasing you just over that.
Jeffrey
Oh, yeah.
Brooke
That's why you have to be proud of the woman on today's brand new Second Date update podcast. Thank you so much for being here because she's a shy girl. Yeah, she's a shy girl and she gave us a shot. Yeah. So you're gonna hear that in just a second. But first, comments from our non shy girl over here. Not Shy girl, but this guy's Sad Guy is their name. Their comment name. Oh, really? His handle is Sad Guy, which may not help this comment. That says, I've been listening for 10 years and I've heard every episode over 25 times through. Now we understand how he got that handle. Yeah, exactly. Oh, my God. The more. The more episodes he listens to, the sadder he gets.
Bianca
Yeah. What happens?
Jeffrey
You guys think he's single or married? Don't laugh.
Brooke
Change it to Sad Single Guy. We need to know.
Jeffrey
All right.
Brooke
Hey, thank you so much for being here and for your commitment to this show. We appreciate it. Your brand new episode starts right now. Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning. Second date Update.
Jeffrey
What types of parties are the best? Keg parties? College parties?
Brooke
Aren't they the same?
Jeffrey
How about science parties where dudes and dames with glasses and pocket protectors get together and nerd out over Bunsen burners and beakers.
Brooke
You. You haven't been to a science party, have you?
Jeffrey
Not recently.
Brooke
Okay.
Jeffrey
I used to go a lot, though. It was back when you were in a frat. Oh, yeah, it was super cool. We'd be like, hey, what's your atomic number, hot stuff, because I'm about to reach critical mass. Oh, yeah, you got.
Brooke
You got kicked out of the science Party too.
Jeffrey
It was too sexy for the room. That is true. But our listener Bianca met a guy at a science expo recently, and we want to hear from her. So, Bianca, welcome to the show.
Bianca
Hey, guys.
Brooke
That's awesome. Does that mean, like, you're a scientist and you were.
Bianca
Well, okay, I'm not a scientist, but the company I work for kind of is adjacent, I guess. And I was just volunteering at this science expo I was finding people in, giving out name tags and stuff.
Brooke
Cool. Do you sign up to volunteer so that you can meet some science hotties?
Bianca
Oh, I mean, it's not mandatory, but
Jeffrey
it'd be kind of weird if it was.
Bianca
I ain't complaining.
Jeffrey
Okay. All right, so tell us about who you met.
Bianca
Okay, so I was signing people in, and this guy was just. He was super cute, and I checked him in, gave him his name tag. Not much went down during this interaction. But I did see him later on while I was setting up displays.
Brooke
You noted him. You were like, okay, yeah.
Bianca
I was like, there's that guy again. And I already knew his name from giving him his name tag.
Jeffrey
What's the name of this science hottie?
Bianca
Bladen.
Brooke
Bladen.
Jeffrey
Bladen. Coolest scientist in the world.
Brooke
Yeah. Also memorable names.
Jeffrey
Oh, my God.
Bianca
How could I forget that?
Brooke
You wouldn't. Did you know he had, like, two rocker parents that were like, yeah, he's gonna be in a band someday. And he's like, nope, mom and dad. I'm rebelling with science.
Jeffrey
So tell us more about you and Bladen and what you guys did together.
Bianca
Okay, so I saw him buy some displays. Me and my boss were getting some slides ready for presentation later, and I. I was like, all right, I'm gonna slip over and talk to this guy really quick. Playing with one of those plasma ball things. Like, you know, the glowy, zappy things? And I was like, all right.
Jeffrey
Oh, is that the thing that you touch that makes your hair stand up?
Bianca
Yeah, it doesn't make your hair stand up, but it, like, it zaps you a little bit.
Jeffrey
Oh, maybe that's just a shampoo thing
Brooke
that I have to deal with.
Jeffrey
Nevermind. Keep going.
Bianca
Okay, so I'm. I'm chatting him up, and he's asking me questions like, why are you here? Is this your normal job? I was like, no, it's not my normal job. Just volunteering. And he's like, well, if you need any help, I'm a science guy, so let me know.
Jeffrey
Wow, I've never heard that used as a pickup line before.
Brooke
Is that how you took it as a pickup line.
Bianca
It was a pickup line. It absolutely was. So we got each other's numbers.
Jeffrey
Okay.
Brooke
Okay, you guys, you moved fast at the science expo.
Bianca
Hey, you never know. Chemicals are volatile. Like, any second we're trying really hard
Jeffrey
not to make a chemistry joke. So.
Brooke
Yes, no more.
Bianca
Yeah.
Jeffrey
But, yeah, it was much better than anything we could have come up with.
Bianca
The next day, there was a chemical spill behind the stage.
Jeffrey
And I was like, yeah, there was.
Bianca
I'm gonna text Bladen.
Jeffrey
Oh, no, that wasn't a. Oh, actually, you spilled something.
Brooke
So wait, you text Bladen for help?
Bianca
Yeah, he told me to text him if I needed help. And you know what? Even if he couldn't help, it's still a good excuse to hang out with him, right?
Brooke
Yeah.
Jeffrey
Yeah.
Brooke
I feel like a janitor came over to mop it up, and she's like, no, don't touch it.
Jeffrey
We're way down. I've got a science guy coming. So did he show up?
Bianca
Yeah, he did. He knew how to clean it up and he took care of it.
Brooke
Sweet.
Jeffrey
What a hero. That's great.
Brooke
Were you ever able to turn these science expos moments into an actual date?
Bianca
Oh, yeah. We went out for drinks after this.
Brooke
Oh, okay, let's get to that. I care more about that than the chemical spill.
Jeffrey
Okay, tell us about drinks.
Bianca
I mean, we like each other.
Brooke
And how do you know that?
Bianca
It went pretty well. It went pretty well. I'm just gonna leave it at that. Okay.
Brooke
Wait, is he like, have a hotel room that you went back to or something?
Bianca
Maybe.
Brooke
All right.
Jeffrey
Okay. Wow. Maybe.
Bianca
I don't know. I said I didn't want to say anything else.
Brooke
Yeah, okay.
Jeffrey
You said a lot by not saying anything.
Brooke
Yeah, Your voice said everything.
Jeffrey
Yeah.
Brooke
So you had a very fun evening.
Bianca
Yeah, it was very fun. I was blinded by science.
Jeffrey
That's one way to put it. For sure.
Brooke
That's really cute. You still sound giddy over the whole thing.
Bianca
Yeah, well, that's why I need help from you guys. Because I haven't heard from him in a week now. And I don't know.
Jeffrey
What if he's a typical science player. Yeah, you know how they are, the Einstein's of the world. Athletes and science.
Brooke
Einstein was a notorious.
Jeffrey
He was. He bounced around through all of his cousins.
Bianca
Oh, no.
Jeffrey
She's believing us back there. Sorry. That's a true story.
Bianca
Good Lord. Oh, God.
Brooke
No. Wait. Do you know, does he live in your city or is he in from out of town?
Bianca
Well, I'm assuming he was out of town because his area code and the hotel room.
Brooke
You guys didn't do much talking.
Jeffrey
Yeah, you guys didn't come up over drinks.
Bianca
Hey, we were busy experimenting, okay?
Brooke
So do you have a theory as to why he's not calling?
Bianca
I don't know why he's not calling me, so that's why we need to call him.
Jeffrey
All right, well, I think you came to the right people. We don't know much about science, but we do know a little bit about calling people and demanding to know why they aren't calling another person back.
Brooke
Oh, yeah, we're not afraid to make things awkward.
Jeffrey
Yeah. So, yes, we will reignite the sparks underneath your Bunsen burners. Hopefully when we come back and get you your scientific second date update. Everyone put your safety goggles on. We're ready right after this.
Brooke
Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning second date update.
Jeffrey
You know what they say about science boys. Serial rizzlers.
Brooke
Oh, yeah, dude.
Jeffrey
Bill Nye, Neil DeGrasse Tyson. Honestly, Isaac the Nude Newton.
Brooke
Oh, is that your nickname for him?
Jeffrey
That was his name. Why do you think the apple fell on his head? Because he was down below shaking the branches with the 17th century, honey.
Brooke
Oh, that's why.
Jeffrey
That's the rumor that I heard. And our listener Bianca is hoping, praying, that this guy that she met named Bladen is not your stereotypical science scumbag.
Brooke
Yeah, I don't think she said that so far.
Jeffrey
No, but that's what she's worried, I think.
Brooke
Okay.
Jeffrey
Are there science players? We're not really sure, but.
Brooke
Oh, for sure there are.
Jeffrey
Dude, if you're attractive and smart, you got it made. The two of them did hang out in his hotel room and she hasn't heard from him in a week after the science expo they attended. So we're just going to try and call and get to the bottom of this once and for all. Bianca, how you doing?
Bianca
I just really need you guys help because I just don't often meet cute guys at science expos named Bladen.
Brooke
Okay. Yeah, fair enough.
Jeffrey
That's a very specific demo. Usually have a different name than that. Yeah.
Brooke
Can I ask you, was there any reason to indicate that it wasn't just a one night fun thing? Especially if he was in from out of town?
Bianca
It really seemed like we just had a deeper connection than that. That's why I'm surprised.
Jeffrey
Got it. Yeah. And from how she described it, they didn't do a whole lot of talking.
Brooke
She doesn't even know where he lives.
Jeffrey
Yeah. Yeah, maybe that's one of the first questions we ask if he picks up the phone here. Wait. We should Google the area code. It's too late now, okay? We just gotta get going. I'm gonna dial Bladen's number and we'll see if he picks up.
Bianca
Here we go. Hello?
Jeffrey
Hey, is this Bladen?
Bianca
Yeah, this is Bladen. Who this?
Jeffrey
Hey, Bladen. We're a radio show called Brooke and Jeffrey in the Morning.
Bianca
Okay.
Jeffrey
Yeah, we're number one for scientists, right? You don't listen.
Brooke
I don't think we could have any research to back that up.
Jeffrey
Yeah, not sure. But we do want you to be today's featured guest on our most popular segment called the Second Date Update. How does that sound?
Bianca
I. I guess it sounds kind of intriguing.
Brooke
All right, that's more than we usually get. Thank you very much.
Jeffrey
I don't know if you know what the segment even is, but we're trying to help out one of our listeners who met up with you about a week ago. Her name is Bianca.
Bianca
Oh, okay.
Jeffrey
Wow.
Brooke
That was not what I wanted.
Jeffrey
It just sounds like you're down or tired.
Brooke
When we talked to her, she was excited.
Jeffrey
Yeah.
Bianca
Yeah. No, I mean,
Brooke
just.
Bianca
It's just complicated. Okay.
Brooke
Oh, no. Complicated. Are you. Can we just ask straight up, like, are you single?
Jeffrey
Brooke's not asking for herself. She's asking just in general.
Brooke
I mean, anytime someone says complicated, that's immediately what anyone thinks.
Jeffrey
You assume that there's other people in the picture?
Bianca
No, that I'm single. I'm very much single.
Brooke
Oh, okay, good.
Jeffrey
Then how's it complicated?
Bianca
Well, it's just things kind of are more. There's more than just at face value with meeting people at these types of events, you know?
Jeffrey
Yeah, no, I definitely like all the vague ways you're describing it. But if you could be any more specific.
Brooke
Yeah, I was gonna say when he said, you know, I don't.
Jeffrey
I don't know at all.
Bianca
Well, I mean, just because of her employer, it made it a little bit more difficult to pursue.
Brooke
Do you work for the same company as her and she didn't realize it?
Bianca
Well, not at the moment. I'm actually applying to work at her company.
Brooke
Oh.
Bianca
I actually have, like, an interview schedule to go in to see them as, like, the follow up.
Brooke
Well, wouldn't that be good? Like she would be a connection for you reference, even?
Bianca
Yeah, I kind of. Like, I didn't want her to think that I was using her to get preferential treatment at this company. And I didn't even realize that she even worked there until at my hotel room. I noticed her name badge. And then I saw the name of the company and I put two and two together.
Brooke
I really didn't talk.
Jeffrey
Yeah. Dang.
Bianca
No, I mean, I know that it was a science expo, but there was way more chemistry going on between the two of us.
Brooke
So wait, you did like her? Like, you thought she was amazing?
Bianca
Yes, she is amazing. She's an amazing woman. And I would love to, circumstances different. I don't want to, like, mess up the opportunities at this company because it's a really good opportunity.
Brooke
Okay, you are all up in your head. Why would you not just call her and tell her all these things?
Jeffrey
Just explain a little bit of, like, why? Because she feels like you're completely ignoring her for the last week and she has no idea why.
Bianca
I mean, I don't know what to do. I mean, I've been in touch with her boss. I was trying to get all that squared away and I'm going to be going in at some point in the next week or so.
Brooke
That would be so awkward if the first time you see her after your guys fun night was in the office, don't you think?
Bianca
I haven't thought about that. I mean, if she's the one signing me at the interview, that's going to be horrible.
Brooke
It's in your power to not have that happen.
Jeffrey
Yeah, and in fact, we're going to take the power away from you at this point and just let you know Bianca is already on the phone right now listening in on this conversation, waiting to talk to you. Thank goodness. What?
Bianca
What?
Jeffrey
Yeah.
Brooke
Yes.
Jeffrey
We're uncomplicating it. We're putting it all out.
Brooke
We're ripping the band aid off.
Jeffrey
You told her? Good job. Bianca, you there?
Bianca
Yes. Oh, I'm so sorry.
Brooke
No, you didn't say anything bad.
Bianca
Why wouldn't you just tell me that? I don't know. I didn't want you to think that I was, like, using you to get a job or anything. I don't know.
Jeffrey
Is that how it works in the science world?
Bianca
Not really. I mean, you still could have just told me. I guess I'm just disappointed. You're not disappointed in what happened in the hotel room. You're just disappointed I didn't tell you about it. Yeah, if I was disappointed in what happened in the hotel room, then I wouldn't have called.
Jeffrey
Yeah, the fact she called a radio station to get in touch with you should be a pretty clear sign that there's feelings there.
Brooke
He is so earnest.
Bianca
Yeah, I mean, the feelings are definitely mutual. I'm just I don't know. I just feel like going into a relationship, I don't want to make it more complicated than it has to be.
Jeffrey
You are.
Brooke
Dude, you are 100 the one that's making this harder.
Jeffrey
Yeah, not intentionally, but yes. You're overthinking it.
Bianca
Well, you guys don't know this, but my boss has this policy that's like a no dating policy for everybody in the office.
Jeffrey
Is that even allowed?
Bianca
It is. Yeah. But I feel like it wouldn't count if we were dating before he got hired, though.
Jeffrey
Yeah, that's actually really smart.
Brooke
But it would probably be important to tell the boss in the interview.
Jeffrey
Oh, no. That may affect a hire because you
Brooke
don't want to come off as lying.
Jeffrey
Yeah, that's all. She's right. It could play against him to be like, oh, yeah, I don't want to hire your new boyfriend.
Bianca
See, I told you guys, this whole thing's complicated. And what if they don't want to hire me because of the relationship and that's the only reason?
Jeffrey
You're right, actually. I guess this is complicated. And the only way to counteract this is to have Brooke go and sleep with Bianca's boss first.
Brooke
I married Jeff.
Jeffrey
But you don't work there.
Brooke
Yeah, it's not going to make a difference.
Jeffrey
You can smooth things over for Bladen.
Brooke
Okay, honestly, I think you guys should just go out one more time. One date doesn't mean you're in a relationship. And, like, you're basing life on things that you don't know will even happen. Like, you don't even know if he'll get hired there.
Bianca
Bianca, would it be okay if, at the interview, I told your boss that we hooked up, but our relationship is uncertain?
Jeffrey
That's nice.
Bianca
No, dude, just want you to know I slept with a receptionist, and I don't want to mess up your employment opportunities there. Like, what if they hire me but then fire you? That would be awful.
Jeffrey
Oh, no.
Brooke
You're hurting my head. All these what ifs.
Bianca
You're just way overthinking this so bad. I mean, that's why they're looking to hire me, because of how well I overthink things. I mean, that's my.
Jeffrey
I mean, Blade. And I know that you really seem to care about this job, and that's great, but it sounds like you care about Bianca, too. And I think when you find somebody that you relate to the way that the two of you seem to, you can't just throw that away over a job opportunity.
Brooke
You have so much to talk about that. You haven't yet.
Jeffrey
So we'd like to offer to send you two out on another date. And we would pay for it.
Bianca
It? Really?
Jeffrey
Yeah. If you're down.
Bianca
Yeah, definitely. Isn't that going to make things more complicated, though?
Brooke
Oh, my God. That's the point. Nobody knows.
Jeffrey
With you, it probably will be, but I would just still go for it.
Bianca
All right, all right, I'm in. You guys convinced me. I'm in.
Jeffrey
Bianca, you're still good?
Bianca
Yes, of course. I don't want to mess anything up with you, Bianca, or with the job, but I think. And let's get back together and try it and see where things go.
Jeffrey
Ooh. Try talking this time. I don't know. I think the more he talks, the less it's working. So talk less. When you meet up, barely say anything to each other.
Bianca
I can do that.
Jeffrey
Okay. All right. Good man.
Bianca
Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning.
Jeffrey
Hello.
Brooke
Hello.
Jeffrey
I'm Malcolm Gladwell, host of the podcast smart talks with IBM. I recently sat down with IBM's chairman
Brooke
and CEO, Arvind Krishna, and I asked
Jeffrey
him, how can companies use AI to its fullest potential to create smarter business? My one advice to them, pick areas you can scale. Don't pick the shiny little toys on the side. For example, if anybody has more than 10% of what they had for customer service 10 years ago, they're already five years behind. If anybody is not using AI to make their developers who write software, 30% more productive today with the goal of being 70% more productive. Yeah.
Bianca
Wow.
Jeffrey
So we are not asking our clients to be the first experiment on it.
Brooke
We say you can leverage what we did.
Jeffrey
We are happy to bring out all our learnings, including what needs to change in the process. Because the biggest change is not technology, is getting people to accept that there's a different way to do things. To listen to the full conversation, visit IBM.com smarttalks.
Brooke
One sweet, melty bite of a Hershey's bar and suddenly I'm right back, sitting on the front porch with my grandmother on a slow summer afternoon. She doesn't say much, just breaks the
Jeffrey
bar in half and hands me a piece of.
Brooke
I open my mouth to say whatever a 9 year old wants to say and she replies with a low
Jeffrey
listen.
Brooke
So we sat there listening. That was the first time I learned that quiet can feel full. Hershey's. It's your happy place.
Jeffrey
If there was any second date update that needed an update update afterwards, this is the one.
Brooke
Yeah, I mean, there's so many what ifs that Were going through his head.
Jeffrey
And I have a lot of what ifs for what could happen. Option A, they become secret lovers and he gets hired. They don't tell the boss anything until the day of their wedding. That would make it really hard.
Brooke
I'm sorry. This guy could not keep a secret.
Jeffrey
Yeah, he's too honest.
Brooke
He would crumble under the pressure of that.
Jeffrey
Fair. Option B, Bladen goes to the interview and Bianca sabotages it on purpose because she wants to be with him, knows that they can't be together if he gets the job. Fire drill or something. I don't know.
Brooke
I think he'll sabotage it himself, saying, hey, I hooked up with. Yeah. With Bianca in your office.
Jeffrey
Yeah. I mean, I have a strong attraction to that girl over there. Now I do have options C through Z. No, Jeff, we don't need them.
Brooke
I was kind of interested.
Jeffrey
We're good. We'll put that up on a later podcast if you want to hear my other theories.
Brooke
Okay.
Jeffrey
But I really do hope that we stay in touch with these two and find out how this works out. Yeah, they're, like, totally a perfect couple. Or the next date, they're gonna be like, whoop, that was a mistake. I know we are not meant to be. Not at all. But make sure you follow our podcast. A KFC tale in the pursuit of flavor. The greatest insult the Colonel ever suffered was being served a wrap that was just a snack by a friend. So he took two crispy tenders, lettuce, tomatoes, and pepper mayo and wrapped them in a soft tortilla. It wasn't a snack, it was a meal. He called it a twister and never called that friend again. The colonel lived so we could chicken the Twister. Now back at KFC Classic or with bacon. Also try it spicy. It's finger licking good. Prices and participation may vary.
