Jeffrey
We got a brand new second date podcast for you today. Hey, it's Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning and I am so curious what people think of this woman's. We'll call it a life rule. Is. Does that sound a relationship rule that she has? Yeah, sure. It's definitely controversial. I mean, I can see the upside and the downside of it, you know.
Sarah Spain
And I think she breaks her own rule, so.
Jeffrey
Interesting. That's a really good point. That's a really good point. You're going to understand what we're talking about in just a second here. But we always love to highlight your comments, leave them, let us know what you think of the show. Thank you so much. And Alexis, what do you like today?
Sarah Spain
Yeah, Karen Escander said, I used to listen to you guys driving to my college classes every day. And four years later, now I have my four month old baby girl listening with me.
Brooke
That's so cute.
Sarah Spain
You're probably teaching her all the words.
Brooke
Yay.
Jeffrey
Her first world is going to be second date update. Second date update.
Alexis
Your baby doesn't know a world without us.
Jeffrey
Yeah, I love that. That's right. That's so sweet. Thank you so much for being here. And your brand new second date starts right.
Brooke
Second date update. What do you do if you're on a date with someone and in the middle you feel like it's going meh.
Jeffrey
Nah.
Brooke
Do you a order a round of shots to get the party going?
Alexis
Hey, it's a win win, you know.
Jeffrey
Really depends on the establishment you're in. Fair.
Alexis
Yeah. This Denny's lit option B, fake like.
Brooke
You'Re choking so she gives you the Heimlich and at least you get some action out of it.
Jeffrey
A couple broken ribs too.
Brooke
Ye. You know, in a great story or C, have a very honest one on one breakdown about how this date is actually going so far. I think I take the Heimlich option over that one. And I wonder if our listener Tina wishes she had done the same. So let's talk to her. Tina, welcome to the show.
Tina
Hi. Thank you.
Jeffrey
Oh my God. That intro makes it sound like you told your date in the middle of it that it was going terribly well.
Brooke
You sent us an email about this person's profile that you met on Hinge. And I'm just going to read some of the things that you sent from his bio before. Before we even get to your story.
Jeffrey
Okay, I'm interested.
Brooke
So, according to this, his name is Josh. He's a specialist in education. His profile says he's dating with the intention of marriage.
Jeffrey
Oh, okay. Sounds like a stable guy, good career.
Brooke
And he's into skyscrapers and tropical fruits. Not sure why we would need to know that information for this, but it's. It's nice to be over informed sometimes.
Alexis
If they ever put a big apple on the big Apple, this guy would freak out.
Jeffrey
Sounds like if there's a lull in your date, you just bring him to a tall building and he's. He's really excited.
Alexis
That's got to be at least 100 stories.
Brooke
All right, now we have an idea about who Josh is. Clearly you met him on the app. So what did you two do for your date?
Tina
We actually went to the zoo.
Jeffrey
The zoo? That's a cute date.
Tina
Yeah, we got a couple of waffle cones and we just walked around, looked at animals and just talked a lot.
Jeffrey
All right, that sounds good.
Tina
I mean, well, he did. He talked a lot.
Brooke
Oh, okay. Does that have anything to do with the thing I mentioned earlier about when the date's kind of going meh?
Tina
Yes. He's the one who asked me.
Brooke
Oh, he asked you how the date was going?
Tina
Yes, because I was being kind of quiet, and so maybe he wasn't sure if I was having fun, so he just asked, like, is the date going okay?
Jeffrey
Was that the first question he asked you? Because it sounds like he was talking a lot.
Brooke
Yes.
Jeffrey
Oh, no.
Brooke
What did you say?
Tina
I was like, do you want me to be honest?
Jeffrey
That's never a good response.
Alexis
I would have been like, no, no. And that would have made it fun, right? Like, lie to me.
Brooke
Oh, no.
Alexis
Anyways, what happened?
Jeffrey
You were honest, I'm guessing.
Tina
Yeah, because he said, yes, please. So I told him directly. Well, honestly, you're talking a lot.
Jeffrey
Oh.
Brooke
Oh, okay.
Alexis
Good feedback. Yeah.
Sarah Spain
Next date.
Alexis
And as a person who talks a lot, it's good to know that.
Brooke
Well, maybe, but some people might take that differently. Did Josh seem offended by the critique?
Tina
No, he seemed more confused, like, as if he didn't know he was doing it. But he heard me out, and then he tried to take constructive criticism.
Brooke
That's good.
Alexis
Oh, that's good.
Tina
And he did a good job of it.
Jeffrey
Oh, he did. Okay, good. All Right. Yeah.
Brooke
Okay.
Tina
We hung out for another hour, ended up grabbing drinks there, because at the zoo, you can, like, buy beer. Yeah, and I didn't.
Jeffrey
I didn't even know that they're offering alcohol at every kid's place these days. Parents are just like, we need it do.
Alexis
They can theme them, too, like sloth shots.
Jeffrey
Well, I don't think. I think it's just beer and wine, typically. Yeah.
Alexis
It's not like banana beer with the monkeys.
Brooke
It's just to take the edge off. It's not to turn up doing body.
Jeffrey
Shots at the zoo.
Sarah Spain
I mean, if you bring your own in.
Jeffrey
Yeah. Alexis has a plan.
Brooke
Okay. Maybe a little bit of beer, a little bit of alcohol helped make the conversation go a little bit better.
Tina
Yeah, it actually did.
Alexis
Good. Okay, here we go.
Jeffrey
I think he was just nervous, right?
Brooke
Yeah.
Jeffrey
Maybe you're just a strikingly beautiful woman and he couldn't think straight, and that's why he was talking so much in the beginning.
Sarah Spain
Still annoying.
Tina
You said it.
Brooke
Okay. She's not denying that. How did you two leave things at the very end?
Tina
Well, at the very end, we just hugged and said goodbye. But while we were there, we worked on, like, an antelope puzzle, and we did it together, and it was fun, so it was cool.
Alexis
So the date actually got better then? After, you told him, like, he was talking too much?
Tina
Yeah, it actually did. Like, I mean, he was more mindful. He asked me questions. He allowed me to speak. Yeah.
Alexis
That is really good.
Jeffrey
You did an antelope puzzle?
Brooke
Yeah, I mean, hot foreplay right there.
Jeffrey
Highlight of any date, Jeff.
Brooke
I mean, sorry, you said it just led to a hug at the very end. There was no kiss?
Tina
No. We text since then, but they've all been pretty short, so I feel like now maybe he's overthinking things and he's taking what I said too seriously.
Alexis
Yeah, totally.
Brooke
Oh, he talked too much before, and now he's not talking enough.
Tina
Yeah, right.
Alexis
I can see that he's overcompensating.
Tina
Or it could be something completely different that I didn't pick up on.
Jeffrey
Okay, but you're definitely feeling the vibe. Like, he is not responding enough to ask you out again, obviously.
Tina
Yeah, because, like, I'm sending him flirty texts and flirty pics, and he's not responding, and that never happens.
Brooke
She's like, antelope, skyscraper, guava fruit. He's saying nothing.
Alexis
He's got all he needs. That's the problem.
Brooke
What's wrong with this man?
Jeffrey
Yeah, you said it. Jeff.
Brooke
Follow me for My Sexy Emoji handbook coming out later on in this winter.
Alexis
Papaya next to the Space Needle.
Jeffrey
Is it really animal?
Brooke
No spoilers.
Jeffrey
No spoilers.
Brooke
Okay, first, we got to finish this second date update. We'll call Josh, get some answers, and do it right after this. Hold on. Second date update. I've learned two things so far today, okay? One. Shot.
Tina
Shot.
Brooke
Shot, shot, Shot. Shots, everybody. You can drink at the zoo. Okay.
Jeffrey
I can't believe you of all people didn't know that. I mean, I feel like you sniff out a beer wherever it is.
Brooke
I'm not a zoo frequenter, but look for Brooke and Jeffrey's listener Zoo crawl coming soon. We'll meet you by the baboons for Jaeger bombs.
Jeffrey
I think it's like a reception. Responsible. You have a beer, Jeff?
Sarah Spain
No, they do adult only zoo days.
Brooke
Yeah, not on Brooke and Jeffrey's listener zoo crawl.
Jeffrey
Wait, Alexis passes out in the bear enclosure?
Brooke
The second thing I've learned is with enough constructive criticism, you can change a man. Brooke already knew that, bro. She tells me everything.
Jeffrey
It is not worth your energy.
Brooke
I. I said that because our listener, Tina, was honest on her date when Josh asked, how do you think this is going with us? And she was polite, but said, you'd probably be going better if you talked a little less.
Jeffrey
Yeah, yeah, but he heard her. You know? Like, that's the amazing thing. He's like, oh, okay.
Brooke
Exactly. Their day actually went pretty good after that. He didn't run off and cry near the snake cage like most guys would. He actually stuck around, had fun. They got drinks, did puzzles. So maybe there's another factor playing into all this that we don't know about yet. So, Tina, even though he has all these issues, why is it that you want us to reach out to him today?
Tina
I mean, like, we had fun together, and he's like, a great guy.
Jeffrey
Totally.
Alexis
Well, the fact that he could adjust and take constructive criticism and be mature about it, I think that's a big green flag.
Jeffrey
Well, and anybody who's a talker knows that if you get nervous, your mouth just doesn't shut up.
Brooke
Okay, maybe let's take some of our own advice there.
Jeffrey
I'm just saying. I get it.
Brooke
Shut it. And we are going to call Josh. Let's listen to ourselves. I'm dialing Josh's number right now. Hopefully, he picks up. Here we go.
Tina
Great. Thank you, guys.
Brooke
You're welcome. Now let's do this.
Josh
Hello?
Brooke
Hey, is this Josh?
Josh
Yeah. Who's this?
Brooke
Hey, Josh.
Jeffrey
Hi, Josh.
Alexis
Hey, good morning.
Josh
How many Are there? What's going on?
Brooke
Yeah, there's. There's a lot of us in here because we're a show. We're called Brooke and Jeffrey in the Morning.
Alexis
Kind of like a morning zoo, if you will.
Brooke
Oh, my God.
Jeffrey
I work on a show called the.
Alexis
Morning Z. Oh, God. That was supposed to be a joke.
Jeffrey
I know. Isn't that sad?
Brooke
Yeah. You're on the radio right now, Josh.
Josh
Okay. Why?
Brooke
Yeah, why is. Because we're doing a segment called A Second Date Update.
Jeffrey
Great.
Brooke
Was waiting for response. It's okay.
Jeffrey
He doesn't know what it is.
Brooke
That's all right. It's a segment. We try to help out listeners who've gone out with someone and they're not getting a call back for a second meetup. So that's the case with you and one of our listeners named Tina.
Tina
Hello?
Josh
Yeah.
Jeffrey
You're not letting the pause happen.
Alexis
Well, you're doing it.
Jeffrey
Give him a beat. You know, he's processing a lot right now.
Brooke
Gotcha.
Alexis
Don't force it.
Brooke
I'll try it again. Tina.
Josh
Yeah, Tina. I remember Tina.
Brooke
Okay, sorry. I know this is probably a lot. I'll just tell you that we spoke to Tina before calling you, and she told us about your hangout. She mentioned the vibe between you may have changed after you asked if everything was going okay in the middle of the date.
Josh
Yeah, that's true.
Jeffrey
What did you think about her response?
Brooke
Yeah, of her feedback.
Josh
I mean, she used this analogy. She called it the stoplight rule.
Jeffrey
Okay. When she was talking about how you were talking too much.
Brooke
Yeah, we're not familiar with that. What is the stoplight rule?
Josh
Okay, well, she says that when you've been talking for 20 seconds, it goes from a green light to a yellow light because you started to talk too long.
Jeffrey
20 seconds?
Josh
Yeah, 20 seconds. And then she said once you hit 40 seconds, it's a red light.
Jeffrey
What?
Alexis
Okay, that's like a general rule, you're saying.
Josh
Yeah, she explained the whole thing to me. And she said that I sped past the red light at least two to three times, which. And I'm like, okay, I didn't know that, like, there was a traffic law for speaking.
Jeffrey
I mean, I guess to get. To get conversation going back and forth, back and forth. Like that ping pong thing.
Alexis
Yeah, I'm trying to count. While you were talking just now, I.
Jeffrey
Heard it and I didn't lose it.
Brooke
And this is all feedback you're getting on a first date?
Josh
Yeah, I mean, we were having drinks and, like, got a little bit of my story. Out. And she was like, you still have the green, but only for another seven or eight seconds.
Brooke
She's literally like, you're still allowed to.
Jeffrey
I thought it was just one example, and then we moved on from it.
Alexis
She's got one of those big speeding guns. She's blocking him. Yeah, I'm counting.
Brooke
Keep going. You're not talking enough now.
Jeffrey
Yeah, that would be difficult.
Alexis
Yeah.
Jeffrey
Yeah.
Sarah Spain
I like the rule, but it's stressful.
Tina
Is that how.
Brooke
Is that how it felt, Josh?
Josh
Yeah. I mean, and I felt like I was, like, on, like, my, like, driving test.
Jeffrey
Oh. Yeah.
Josh
When I was 16, the instructor was like, speed up now. Slow down. I use your blinker merge. And so I just kind of, like, lost all my confidence.
Brooke
She's like, I love the way you.
Alexis
Parallel park that paragraph.
Brooke
Yeah, that was perfect. It's understandable. And you know what? I'm going to tell you something here, Josh. I don't think Tina meant for it to come across that way. Oh, and I'm going to let her tell that to you herself, because she is on the other line right now waiting for me to hit my red.
Alexis
Light so I can stop talking, and.
Brooke
I'm gonna give her the green to go. So, Tina, go ahead. The intersection is yours.
Tina
Josh. My God, like, you make me sound so horrible.
Jeffrey
Oh, wow.
Tina
Wait, wait.
Josh
Even listening this whole time?
Tina
Yeah. And you're making me look pretty bad here, like.
Alexis
Well, explain yourself.
Jeffrey
I don't think he was making you look bad. He was just saying it was overwhelming, Tina. It was a lot for him to think about. What?
Josh
I'm sorry, but, like, where's the lie? Like, I didn't say anything that was not true.
Tina
Okay, well, to be honest, when you were talking to the radio host, I stopped listening after about, like, 20 seconds.
Brooke
Oh, yeah.
Jeffrey
Why are you so offended? You gave him feedback, and now he's.
Tina
Giving you feedback because he has a tendency to, like, drone on and on. And he actually thanked me in a moment. And, like, Josh, don't forget that you thank me.
Josh
What do you say? Like, what do you say to that?
Tina
Did you not ask me to give you honest feedback?
Josh
Okay, Like, I. I did, but, like, I wasn't expecting you to give me, like, accept accountability.
Brooke
Accept accountability.
Tina
Like, it's not your fault. You're a long talker. You just acknowledge it. And the good news is you're trying to get better. And, like, I see the potential in you, and it's so green.
Alexis
I don't feel.
Jeffrey
Don't think it's a compliment. You think it is to tell people you see potential in them. It's like you, like, the person for how they are.
Brooke
Brooke, I see potential in you in the future. One day.
Alexis
You're garbage right now, Brooklyn.
Brooke
One day soon.
Tina
I didn't mean it like that. I meant it like, he's improving every second and he needs me.
Jeffrey
Oh.
Tina
Because, like, clearly. Because now it's obvious, like, he hasn't learned his lesson because he is still talking. And I also feel like the hosts are not even paying full attention.
Alexis
That's true. I really don't pay that much attention.
Brooke
That was a lot.
Josh
They're not paying attention. I'm sure they are because you're being rude and insensitive, like, so there. Take that advice.
Tina
Oh, I'm always open for getting better, Josh, but if it doesn't come with a helpful analogy and a short one, then it's kind of lost on me.
Brooke
Like, actually, the stoplight thing has already been taken, so you need to find another sort of, like, commuter. Yeah. Thing. We gotta need another, like, some bicycle lane.
Alexis
Like a maritime law kind of thing.
Jeffrey
How about compliment speed bumps? That would be helpful in a relationship.
Josh
Relationships are not supposed to be this hard.
Tina
Especially hard.
Sarah Spain
It's a little confusing.
Brooke
Yeah.
Tina
I told you what it was. I explained to you how it works, and I'm pointing out when you go too long. So, like, what's so hard about that?
Jeffrey
It feels like one of those roundabouts where you don't know what the third X is.
Brooke
Yeah. I'm gonna give everybody the red light here, okay. And I'm just gonna tell you a little fun fact about me, is that I am not. I am not the best talker either. But I think something we can all agree on, even bro, Brooke will back me on this. Is everybody, all of us here, and every person on Earth has areas in their speech they could personally improve on? Can we all agree on that?
Jeffrey
What does that have to do with him thinking she was rude?
Brooke
I'm just saying we all have flaws.
Jeffrey
Okay, there's an easier way to say that. But areas in our speech.
Alexis
I'm starting to think the 22nd rule is real.
Sarah Spain
Because, like, yeah, it gets boring after that.
Jeffrey
Yeah, we all have areas of speech.
Brooke
No more advice is needed. And I should just ask, would you care to both improve each other's lives immensely by going out with one another one more time?
Alexis
And we'll pay for it.
Tina
I mean, I would do it again and do it for charity reasons.
Jeffrey
So backhanded we are right back to that.
Brooke
So that's a big yes. From Tina, who is looking to work and change you over the next few years. Josh. So what do you say? Will you be her project chick Satan? Under like 20 words. I'm going to give you a yellow light on this.
Josh
Yeah, I. I don't think so. I don't want to feel like I'm going to traffic court every day for the rest of my life, so that's a big no for me.
Jeffrey
It's interesting. Most people think traffic court is fun. Well, it didn't work out, Tina.
Tina
It's his loss.
Jeffrey
It's his loss.
Alexis
So much for something.
Jeffrey
Yeah, I know.
Brooke
Brookie, Jeffrey in the morning. Oh, red light, green light. Fatal in squid game. And apparently in the dating.
Jeffrey
How do we not make that connection earlier?
Alexis
That's true.
Jeffrey
That's funny.
Brooke
Probably shoulda. But maybe we should use it on this show. As soon as Brooke starts telling one of her pathetic, ugly duckling childhood stories where she tried to show skin to the mailman and even he wouldn't pay any attention to her. Alexis, you're gonna start holding up colored cards. And when it flashes, yellow means time to start wrapping the story up.
Jeffrey
I get red carded and you just for two minutes.
Brooke
A little too much. We get it. He's.
Jeffrey
We know.
Brooke
He said the left one was a little wonky and he wasn't interested. We've heard the story.
Jeffrey
He's always interested. Jeff. Doesn't matter how wonky things are.
Brooke
But if you need help in your dating life, like Brooke did back in her teenage years, you can always email the show. We'll call that person who's not calling you back. And go check out all of our second day podcasts. They're up online, wherever you get yours at. Brooke and Jeffrey.

Podcast Summary: Brooke and Jeffrey: Second Date Update – "Red Light Green Light"
Episode Overview In the episode titled "Red Light Green Light," released on July 14, 2025, hosts Brooke and Jeffrey dive into the intricacies of second dates, specifically focusing on the challenges that arise when a first date doesn't go as smoothly as hoped. Through a listener's real-life experience, the hosts explore communication dynamics, feedback reception, and the delicate balance between honesty and sensitivity in dating scenarios.
Introduction to the Second Date Dilemma The episode begins with Brooke introducing the concept of a second date update, setting the stage for an in-depth discussion. Jeffrey poses a controversial relationship rule inspired by a listener, sparking immediate interest.
Listener Story: Tina and Josh Listener Tina shares her date experience with Josh, whom she met on the dating app Hinge. Brooke reads Josh's profile, highlighting his profession as a specialist in education and his interest in skyscrapers and tropical fruits, setting a backdrop for Tina's narrative.
Breaking the Ice: Constructive Criticism Brooke and Jeffrey discuss the pivotal moment when Josh asks Tina how the date is going. Feeling the conversation was one-sided, Tina chooses honesty over flattery.
This honesty leads to Josh's realization that he was talking excessively, a fact Tina communicated using the "Stoplight Rule" analogy.
The Stoplight Rule Explained Josh elaborates on the "Stoplight Rule," which Tina introduced to him:
Green Light: Conversations lasting up to 20 seconds are acceptable.
Yellow Light: Conversations extending to 40 seconds are becoming too lengthy.
Red Light: Conversations surpassing 40 seconds are problematic.
Notable Quote:
This framework was Tina's attempt to help Josh become more mindful of his conversational pace.
Impact of Feedback on the Relationship Post-feedback, Tina and Josh decide to continue their date by having drinks and working on an antelope puzzle. While the date initially improved, Tina notices a shift in Josh's communication—moving from overly talkative to unusually silent.
Brooke and Jeffrey analyze this change, contemplating whether Josh is overthinking or displaying a shift in interest due to Tina's feedback.
Confronting the Issue: A Call to Josh Determined to provide closure and insights, Brooke and Jeffrey take an unconventional step by calling Josh live on their show.
Josh's Perspective Josh expresses discomfort with the Stoplight Rule, likening the feedback to a stressful driving test that undermined his confidence during the date.
Tina's Clarification and Mutual Understanding Tina clarifies her intentions, emphasizing that her feedback was meant to help Josh improve rather than criticize him harshly.
Despite Tina's goodwill, Josh decides against pursuing a second date, citing discomfort with the ongoing "traffic court" metaphor.
Hosts' Reflections and Conclusion Brooke and Jeffrey reflect on the delicate nature of providing and receiving feedback in early-stage relationships. They underscore the importance of mutual understanding and the potential for growth when communication is handled thoughtfully.
The episode concludes with Brooke and Jeffrey acknowledging the complexities of dating feedback and encouraging listeners to engage openly yet sensitively in their romantic endeavors.
Key Takeaways
Conclusion "Red Light Green Light" serves as a thoughtful exploration of the balance between honesty and sensitivity in dating. Through Tina and Josh's experience, Brooke and Jeffrey illuminate the challenges and opportunities that arise when individuals strive to improve their communication for healthier relationships.
