Brooke
We've got your brand new second date to start your week. Thanks so much for being here. It's Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning, and today is really about how just a simple question, just a real simple first date question goes very wrong. Yeah, okay. It is defensive. It's kind of a hard. I don't know if I'd have an answer to the question what your scariest story is. Yeah, I mean, you listen to enough crime podcasts, I would think be able to come up with something.
Jeff
Killed in an alley once after a soccer match, a guy was literally wearing a hockey mask.
Brooke
What?
Jeff
It was a hockey mask of the team. So I was like, go, team. And he was some wasted guy. Approached me. Thank God my friend Tristan was there. Jumped on him and choked it, and we both pushed him down and I got away.
Brooke
Did he, like, come at you? Did he have a weapon?
Jeff
Yeah.
Brooke
No.
Jeff
He grabbed my shirt and then he pulled me in and I was like, dude. And I was trying to push him, and he wouldn't let go of me. And he was a lot bigger than me.
Brooke
Take it back. I guess it is an easy question. Yeah, I don't.
Jeff
Ask me what my second favorite one is.
Brooke
Nope, nope. We don't got time for that.
Lauren LaRosa
Nope.
Brooke
All right.
Jeff
A dragon. No, I'm kidding.
Jeffrey
I'm totally kidding.
Brooke
All right, leave your scariest stories in the comments today and enjoy your brand new second date.
Jeffrey
Second date update. They say finding love is like finding wi fi in the desert.
Jeff
It's rare, it's impossible.
Jeffrey
It's miraculous, slightly alarming when it actually happens to you. And right now, our listener Dan is out in the dating desert, wandering around, holding his phone up in the air, trying to get one bar of love. Oh, there it goes. Let's see if we can try and help strengthen that signal today with this second date update. Dan, welcome to the show.
Dan
Hey, guys, thanks for taking my call.
Brooke
Man. Yeah, we're worried about you out there. You need some water? How are you doing?
Dan
Okay. Right now?
Jeff
Okay.
Jeffrey
You must be feeling okay, because apparently a woman has wandered into your desert of dating.
Brooke
Are you sure it's not a mirage?
Jeffrey
Oh, yeah, could be. What's this girl's name?
Dan
Her name's Becca.
Brooke
Becca.
Jeffrey
Okay. How did you meet Becca?
Dan
So we were at a friend's mutual gathering. Like, it wasn't anything crazy. It was just like a. Like a bonfire.
Brooke
Oh, fun.
Becca
Nice.
Brooke
That's cool.
Dan
Yeah. So we ended up kind of sitting next to each other. So we ended up chatting.
Brooke
Okay.
Dan
You know, your producer asked me, like, what. Stuck up about her. Stuck out about her.
Jeffrey
But what is stuck up about her? That's also a good, important question.
Dan
Maybe that's what it is. That's why she's not calling me back.
Jeff
Yeah, she doesn't need anything that costs less than $50.
Jeffrey
Totally. So what did you like about her?
Dan
Well, so, first of all, like, the first thing I noticed was she was wearing these, like, old Converse shoes with, like, doodles on them. So just real relaxed. I didn't feel like she was trying too hard. She had a killer smile as well. So I was like, man, this is, like, right up my alley.
Brooke
That's cute. And the scene's kind of set for you. You're at a bonfire. You know, everybody looks good under bonfire. Lighting darker, but, like, enough to see.
Dan
Yeah, Right. So we ended up chatting there. And then as the night was kind of getting. Getting done, I had asked her if she was hungry, if she wanted to go out to eat. And so we went out to, like, a little Mexican place.
Brooke
Oh, and it was just you and her that went to the Mexican restaurant?
Dan
Yeah, it was just the two of us. So, you know, it was a real solid night. And then kind of cooled down. So I had given her my J, and I had walked her back to her car. And I told her, I said, you know, just hang on to the jacket. You know, give it to me next time.
Jeffrey
Was. Was that, like, a little plan for you to have it?
Becca
It was a little move.
Jeffrey
Okay.
Brooke
Yeah.
Jeff
How did she react to you walking her to her car and giving her the jacket? Was she like, oh, thank you, or.
Jeffrey
Was it like, ew, no.
Jeff
Well, I don't know.
Dan
Yeah. No, I mean, it seemed, like, polite, and it seemed like she was down for it.
Jeff
Good.
Lauren LaRosa
Okay.
Brooke
But I will say, leaving something behind. Oldest trick in the book when it comes to lad. I know that play.
Dan
Well, she definitely knew it because what it is, like she took the jacket to my buddy's place and dropped it off with him.
Brooke
She's. Yeah. Ahead of the game.
Jeff
Or is she, like, really sweet and it's just like, oh, make sure you give this back to your friend.
Jeffrey
No, she's not.
Brooke
See him again. You'd be like, sweet.
Jeff
Yeah.
Brooke
Now I have a reason to contact him.
Dan
Yeah. So I'm just wondering, you know, what's up? What's the reason that I feel like I'm getting ghosted now?
Brooke
I will say your impromptu date is pretty impressive. Yeah, like, you were pretty smooth, like, prepared. With a Mexican restaurant. Made it all happen that night. That's awesome.
Dan
I mean, I was trying my best. I was trying my best.
Jeffrey
Okay, well, we're definitely going to try and help you here in a second, but I do feel like we need maybe a little bit more information, because the way you paint it, it's almost too perfect. Like, was there anything weird, anything awkward that happened during the night?
Brooke
Yeah.
Dan
So really, the only thing that I can think of was, like, around the bonfire, people were telling, like, scary stories and things. Like, and I didn't tell one there. So while we were eating, she had asked me, what's your scary story?
Brooke
Oh, she asked, okay.
Dan
And I froze. And the only thing I could think of was, not too long ago, the battery on my smoke detector died and it started beeping in the middle of the night, and it freaked me out.
Brooke
Isn't that more of an annoying than a freaky story? Not really like, a ghost story or anything.
Jeff
My smoke detector died and is talking from the dead.
Dan
I said I froze. Just that, like, and I don't know why I told that story, but that's the story that, like, I went with.
Brooke
And did you guys laugh about it? Like, we just did, or she just.
Dan
Kind of stared at me and, like, we were just eating. Like, almost like, oh, this is a scary story. Like, this is.
Jeffrey
Maybe she actually was scared by it.
Brooke
Oh, she was so frightened that she could.
Jeffrey
Didn't know what to say. Like, she freaked her out for the entire rest of the time, and now she's worried about what you might say next.
Brooke
Or she was hanging out a bonfire expecting to meet, like, a manly guy and. Excuse me, scared of.
Jeffrey
I can hear what you're saying.
Brooke
I know, but, like, he knows. He knows as well. Being scared of fire alarms going off.
Dan
To be fair, I'm not scared of a fire alarm. I was frightened of a smoke alarm. They're two different things, because where there's.
Jeffrey
Smoke, there's fire, and where there's fire. There's people hooking up.
Lauren LaRosa
Oh, losing me with him.
Brooke
It's just where there's smoke, there's a dead battery is all it is, Jeff.
Jeffrey
Okay, well, now I feel like we've got the full picture of the events that unfolded. There were some nice moments. There was some awkward moments. There was some bad storytelling. We'll figure out how it all comes together.
Brooke
Yeah, and you guys blame me all the time.
Jeffrey
He's the one that said that. He told me.
Brooke
How does it feel, Jeff? How does it feel to be attacked for what you're saying?
Jeffrey
Feels like I'm a man. This man is gonna really manly up when we handle it. Thank you, Jose. We're gonna call Alyssa and try and get you your second date update right after this.
Dan
Thanks, guys.
Jeffrey
Hold on. Second date update? It was the perfect first date. It had everything. A romantic bonfire, tasty Mexican food, even a little clothing swap action right in the middle.
Brooke
Hello? Well, he tried.
Jeffrey
That is until Dan made his fatal mistake when he told his scariest story about a smoke detector that ran low on battery and wouldn't stop.
Brooke
Don't repeat it, Jeff. I'm gonna have nightmares forever. I know.
Jeffrey
Sorry. Should have ear muffed the children if they were listening to that.
Jeff
And the replacement batteries were nowhere to be found. Oh, no.
Jeffrey
Now, Dan admits wasn't his best moment. He kind of panicked, though. Couldn't think of a scary story on the spot.
Brooke
I wish he could have laughed it off. Like that would have made it okay. Yeah.
Jeffrey
You know what I mean?
Brooke
Like if you. If you. That was a moment for you to be self deprecating. That was just missed.
Jeffrey
But still, that shouldn't be so bad that Becca returned his jacket the next day to his friend rather than give it to Dan face to face. Yeah, yeah.
Jeff
Get scared for real, buddy.
Brooke
Maybe it wasn't that. Maybe, Dan, it was that you weren't responsible enough to replace the batteries every year.
Jeffrey
What do you think about that, Dan? You come across like an irresponsible guy.
Dan
That's Maybe that's exactly. That's what it is.
Brooke
Yeah.
Jeffrey
Yeah.
Brooke
I like how he went maybe to yes. Yeah. My dad tells me to do it on New Year's day because then you'll never forget. That's your battery change.
Jeff
Make it like a tradition. Yeah, it's kind of funny.
Jeffrey
Well, this segment has officially hit a.
Brooke
New low battery advice from Brooks. Dad, call in.
Jeff
You need some batteries. Let's talk batteries.
Dan
God.
Jeff
Okay, smoke detectors.
Jeffrey
Dan, are you ready to call Becca here? We got to move forward from this right, Dan?
Becca
Yeah.
Dan
I'm ready. Let's make it happen.
Brooke
Okay.
Jeffrey
We're just making him relive his trauma over and over again.
Brooke
I was gonna go to carbon monoxide.
Jeff
No.
Brooke
Okay, you just got to make sure you have those as well.
Jeffrey
Okay? Save it for New Year's.
Brooke
It's a silent killer.
Jeff
Save it for New Year.
Jeffrey
Let's just go. Here we go.
Becca
Silent killer.
Jeffrey
Just calling Becca right now.
Becca
Hello?
Jeffrey
Hey, is this Becca?
Becca
Who's this?
Jeffrey
Hey, this is a radio show. We're called Brook and Jeffrey in the Morning.
Jeff
Hey, Becca. Good morning.
Becca
Is this really a radio show?
Brooke
Yeah.
Jeff
Yeah, I know we exist.
Brooke
That'd be a lame joke we're doing.
Jeff
We are also a podcast, if you wanted to know.
Jeffrey
No, we're doing a PSA where we're calling everybody in the area to make sure that they have changed the batteries inside of their smoke detectors in their home. Have you done that?
Becca
I don't need to do that.
Brooke
Oh.
Jeffrey
Oh, okay.
Jeff
Oh, you live in an apartment like me. They change our batteries for us.
Jeffrey
That must be nice, because apparently that wasn't the case with a guy you went out with recently named Dan.
Brooke
Okay, real sideways for her, like she doesn't know why we're calling Hard left.
Jeffrey
Yeah, yeah, yeah, we know the guy, Dan, that you met at the bonfire recently.
Becca
Oh, that guy.
Jeffrey
Yeah. So he reached out to us about doing this thing called the Second Date Update. We're trying to help him figure out why after you two hung out at the Mexican restaurant and had a pretty good time together, you are not talking to him anymore.
Becca
Okay. Okay.
Brooke
I think he feels like you're really avoiding him because you even brought his jacket back to his buddy instead of giving it back to him.
Becca
That was kind of a smooth move, but it kind of backfired.
Jeffrey
Why? You said the jacket backfired.
Becca
Yeah, well, I put my hand in the pocket when I got home, and I found a receipt that was from earlier in the morning, the day of that same party. And it was from a grocery store, but it was for Kotex and tampons. Oh.
Jeff
Female products.
Brooke
Yeah. Feminine hygiene products.
Jeff
That's how you say it. I don't even know how to say it.
Becca
Yeah. Feminine hygiene products.
Brooke
Okay, so you're thinking. I mean, I would automatically jump to, he's in a relationship.
Jeff
Yeah.
Becca
Thank you. Exactly. So I called my friend who was the host of that party, and I was like, do you know his deal? Like, what is going on?
Brooke
Yeah.
Becca
And we were, like, trying to figure it out. Honestly, we have no clue why wouldn't.
Brooke
You just ask him? Then? He could lie if she just asks him. Yeah, but why would he. He contacted us. A huge public radio show.
Jeffrey
That's kind of overselling it.
Becca
Well, I mean, that would be weird. So, I don't know. Maybe you can ask him.
Jeffrey
Yeah, I mean, obviously, he had no idea that she would be finding that receipt. He didn't, like, leave it there on purpose.
Brooke
It was totally innocent, and he doesn't care. Like, it didn't even cross his mind.
Jeff
What is a good answer?
Brooke
He has a female roommate.
Jeffrey
Yeah, let's not, like, come up with the answers that we're gonna, like, give it to him so we could use it, because he is on the phone right now taking all of this.
Brooke
I thought he was tracking his mother's cycle. No.
Becca
Wait, is this a radio show, or is this, like, a prank with his friends?
Dan
No, no, no.
Jeffrey
He. He really is listening on the other line, waiting to talk to you.
Becca
Are you serious?
Jeffrey
Yeah. Dan, this is your moment. Jump in anytime.
Dan
Yeah. Hey, Becca. So it's for my mom.
Brooke
That didn't sound like it's the way you said it.
Jeffrey
It's really.
Brooke
Why wouldn't you immediately just say, I'm single. I'm so sorry.
Dan
I am single, and it was for my cousin.
Becca
Is that a question or.
Jeffrey
And your voice keeps going up every time you say these things, Dan.
Becca
Y.
Dan
Okay, okay. It was for my sister.
Brooke
No, now you're not being honest.
Jeffrey
Stop messing around. What's really going on?
Dan
All right?
Becca
Just be straight with us.
Jeffrey
Yes, please.
Brooke
I like that we're together now. With Alyssa or with Becca.
Becca
We're a unit now.
Jeffrey
Okay.
Jeff
Are we all synced up?
Brooke
Yeah.
Lauren LaRosa
Is that how that works?
Jeff
I still don't know.
Jeffrey
I'm glad that we have you as a listener now, Becca, but I still want to hear from Dan about what's going on.
Dan
Okay. So I said the other people because I'm kind of nervous. I feel like. I feel like the real answer is.
Brooke
Worse in a way, worse than being in a relationship.
Jeff
Whoa.
Dan
So here's the. I am single. It's relatively recent. Like, my ex girlfriend and I still talk, and occasionally, like, I will go over and see her, and. And it just so happened that she had asked me before I went to go see her earlier that day, that I stopped at the store and pick up some stuff for her.
Brooke
What? That does not sound.
Jeffrey
His voice didn't go up at the end, though, so that one kind of sounds real.
Brooke
I feel like when he says, recently single, he's like, well, I literally am just texting her right now to break up with her. Why would you be going over to see your ex frequently?
Becca
I mean.
Dan
Because I'm single.
Becca
Yeah, they're like friends with benefits now. Like. Yeah, I mean.
Dan
Yeah, that's it pretty much at this point.
Jeffrey
Okay, so you guys are. You've ended the relationship but haven't fully detached.
Brooke
That's messy for Becca to join in. Well, does Becca even believe that? I mean, do you believe that he's fully single, even though, I mean, obviously he still has some ties with his ex?
Jeffrey
Yeah. And if you do believe it, how does it make you feel to hear that?
Becca
Well, honestly, I'm kind of in a similar situation.
Brooke
There we go. There's some truth. So wait, you're hooking up with your ex too?
Becca
Well, I'm single. He and I are broken up, but occasionally we'll still, you know, like, have dinner and. Oh, we've become like, friends with benefits.
Jeff
Well, it's awesome you guys know each other and you trust each other, but.
Brooke
Having dinner and then staying sounds like a date. Yeah, you know, like, that's not just.
Jeff
It's a little more intimate than romantic.
Brooke
Than just elevated friends with benefits.
Becca
Well, I guess my question would be if you are actively dating someone else, are you still going to be friends with benefits with your ex?
Dan
I mean, if I'm dating someone and we're exclusive, we're exclusive. That's the way it is.
Brooke
So are we both giving up our exes to go on another date?
Jeffrey
You should probably introduce your exes to each other because there might be a connection between those two.
Jeff
Everyone can hook up.
Brooke
Well, they don't want to ruin their fallback plan. Jeff. Gotta have them there. Sure.
Becca
I would definitely be willing to stop seeing my ex if I was dating someone, so.
Brooke
That's cute. Okay.
Jeffrey
I mean, wow, Dan, aren't you glad that you didn't stick with your whole sister answer? That definitely wouldn't work.
Brooke
You mean sister, cousin, mother? Yeah. Friend.
Dan
Yeah. I didn't know what she'd think about it. It is the truth.
Jeffrey
Okay.
Brooke
Okay.
Jeffrey
Well, in that case, we would like to offer to send you two out on another day. And Becca, if you say yes, we are willing to pay for for it.
Becca
Well, yes.
Brooke
Hey.
Becca
Okay.
Jeffrey
Okay.
Brooke
Oh, man. You could be in a relationship soon with a sweet man who will do all of your errand running for you. That is nice.
Becca
I do love that. Can we go for massages?
Brooke
You want us to pay for massages? No, girl, this is like a dinner date.
Becca
Okay, yeah, dinner date. Is a better idea.
Jeff
Yeah, I don't know.
Becca
I just. I was just a little. I jumped ahead as to what gift.
Brooke
Certificates we had available for us.
Jeffrey
Dan, you can be in charge of the massage itself, like. Right?
Dan
Deal.
Jeffrey
Okay. Just don't let any romantic candles around it with that smoke detector. That's faulty. You gotta be careful, dude.
Dan
I. I won't wait until New Year's to change the smoke detector batteries for you.
Jeffrey
Oh, I don't think she heard that part of the segment. So she doesn't know what you're talking.
Brooke
The one that was scared.
Jeff
Yeah.
Jeffrey
Yeah.
Brooke
Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning.
Stephanie, Beatriz, and Melissa Fumaro
Hey, guys, it's Stephanie, Beatriz and Melissa Fumero. And this is more better. We are jumping right in and ready to hear from you, your thoughts, your questions, your feelings about socks with sandals. And we're ready to share some possibly questionable advice. And hot takes.
Brooke
God, that sucks so hard, though.
Stephanie, Beatriz, and Melissa Fumaro
I'm so sorry. Can you out petty them? Can you match their pettiness for funsies?
Brooke
Yeah.
Stephanie, Beatriz, and Melissa Fumaro
We had so much fun last season. Laughing, crying, talking to some new and old friends.
Brooke
Remember when we were in that scene where you guys were just supposed to.
Jeffrey
Hug and I was stand?
Brooke
Oh, yeah.
Lauren LaRosa
And I was like, can I also hug them?
Brooke
I'm like, this has no friends.
Stephanie, Beatriz, and Melissa Fumaro
And this time around, we are. Say it, Melissa. Should I say it? Getting a little more better.
Becca
Oh, finally.
Stephanie, Beatriz, and Melissa Fumaro

Jeffrey
Wow. I have never seen a random grocery store receipt bring two people together like.
Brooke
This did, but I think we should just say it. It was tampons that brought them together.
Jeffrey
It really. It's Amazing. It bonded them. They need to actually, like, save that receipt, put it up in a picture frame as a keepsake, a reminder of this moment.
Brooke
No, I mean, we'll see how easily they cut off their exes before we get into a full relationship for them.
Jeffrey
Yeah, it is. It is funny that they were both. Both still messing around with their exes, not just one they're both guilty of.
Lauren LaRosa
Yeah.
Brooke
I mean, when you're single, odds are high. Yeah, they are. Yeah.
Jeffrey
Well, it is a good life hack for all the ladies out there to get your exes to buy your hygiene products.
Brooke
They're so expensive. They are. They're. They're ridiculous right now, just so you know.
Jeff
That's why you want them to buy them.

In this "Second Date Update," Brooke, Jeffrey, and the team try to help listener Dan understand why he's been ghosted by Becca after a promising first date that started at a bonfire and ended with a late-night Mexican food run. What seems like a textbook sweet night unravels into confusion, all hinging on a hilariously underwhelming “scary story” and a fateful grocery store receipt for feminine hygiene products.
This episode explores awkward first-date faux pas, misunderstanding over a “scary” smoke alarm anecdote, and a twist involving old relationships that might be more recent (and overlapping) than either party expected.
"To be fair, I'm not scared of a fire alarm. I was frightened of a smoke alarm. They're two different things..."
— Dan (08:58)
"I put my hand in the pocket when I got home, and I found a receipt...for Kotex and tampons."
— Becca (13:21)
"Okay, okay, it was for my sister."
— Dan, sheepishly (15:30)
"Honestly, I'm kind of in a similar situation."
— Becca (17:15)
"Well, yes."
— Becca, on the prospect of a second date (18:48)
On First Impressions:
"She was wearing these, like, old Converse shoes with, like, doodles on them. So just real relaxed...right up my alley."
— Dan (05:23)
On the Not-So-Scary Story:
"Isn't that more of an annoying than a freaky story? Not really like, a ghost story or anything."
— Brooke (08:08)
Hosts Roasting Dan’s Explanation:
"And your voice keeps going up every time you say these things, Dan."
— Becca (15:28)
Surprise Twist:
"Honestly, I'm kind of in a similar situation."
— Becca (17:15)
Looking Forward:
"Oh, man. You could be in a relationship soon with a sweet man who will do all of your errand running for you."
— Brooke (18:51)
The episode is light-hearted and playful, with the hosts poking fun at awkward dating moments and Dan’s anxiety. The chemistry between Brooke, Jeffrey, and their cohosts brings comedic relief, but the sympathetic approach allows for real vulnerability from Dan and Becca. Ultimately, it’s a story about how modern dating often involves unresolved baggage — and sometimes, a little honesty and mutual understanding can turn a would-be disaster into a new beginning.
Listeners are reminded not to judge a date by a stray receipt — or by their ghost stories. Both parties ultimately bond over shared experiences, proving love (or at least a second date) sometimes hinges on the oddest of details.
