Hey, it's Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning. We got a new episode for you in your second date podcast. Thanks for being here. I'm glad we all made it back after a big World cup weekend. Oh, yeah. What do we got before this episode, though? Alexis and comments.
Alexis
Yeah, John McGiggin said, listening to this while my wife gives birth.
Brooke
Whoa.
Unidentified Female Co-host
Oh, my gosh, John.
Alexis
No more podcasts. Get in there and hype her up
Unidentified Female Co-host
to prove, is this a good or a bad thing?
Field
I don't think it's a good thing.
Jeffrey
I don't know. But the end of that was not what I expected.
Alexis
No.
Brooke
Yeah.
Unidentified Female Co-host
He's like, honey, keep it down. They're about to reveal the big twist.
Field
Yeah.
Jeffrey
All right, let's do it. Your brand new episode right now. Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning. Second date update.
Field
Before our segment, our producer asked me, have I ever dated somebody that was low maintenance? And I don't think I really had to think about it. But then I remembered I did meet somebody through this show, actually. We went out bowling and this person felt comfortable enough to show me their Bunions. So is that low maintenance or is it just low?
Jeffrey
I mean, you're a feet guy, right? So that's cool.
Field (Male Guest)
Are you a feet guy?
Field
After that, I'm not so sure.
Jeffrey
It's just kind of like bones that are, you know, they're out there the right way.
Field
But I only ask because our listener Field says he's been on the apps for a while now and he isn't sure that low maintenance women even exist anymore. And he's apparently okay with it. So, Field, welcome to the show, man. Can I ask, what do you mean by your comment? There's no such thing as low maintenance women?
Field (Male Guest)
I of the opinion that women should know their worth. And it's not like past generations where they had to put up with troglodyte men who don't understand how this works. I think they needed a sense of what they're going to get in a relationship with you. And so out the gate, you should try treat him like a princess.
Jeffrey
Oh, okay. So this, this is your, like, what you're bringing to the table. But why don't you think women are low maintenance?
Field (Male Guest)
I think it's part of it is expectations.
Jeffrey
Okay, I could see that when you
Field (Male Guest)
say low maintenance at this point, I just think it's somebody who's lazy and is just good for whatever you give them.
Jeffrey
Okay.
Brooke
Okay.
Jeffrey
So you're happy with high maintenance women.
Field (Male Guest)
Exactly.
Unidentified Female Co-host
Okay.
Field (Male Guest)
A person who knows what they want.
Field
So tell us, the non low maintenance woman that you matched with, what's her name?
Field (Male Guest)
Her name is Sabrina. And at first there was a little bit of a rigamarole in that.
Unidentified Female Co-host
I'm sorry, can you find rigamarole, please?
Jeffrey
Words today?
Brooke
Yes.
Field
I'm sorry, Field. We usually don't have high maintenance guests on this segment, so all your vocabulary is really throwing us for a rigmarole of a loop.
Jeffrey
So it's like when you have to like jump through a bunch of hoops or there's.
Field (Male Guest)
Exactly. She created a bit of an obstacle course before we could get to the objective.
Field
What do you mean?
Field (Male Guest)
Well, initially I was trying to make a date with her and she said she doesn't do Wednesdays. And I was like, okay, cool. And then she doesn't do weekends. And I was like, okay, we're narrowing down the week. And then she doesn't do Thursdays or Mondays. And so I was like, okay, do you want to meet on a Tuesday
Field
night one day a week?
Jeffrey
Why wouldn't she just say Tuesdays work great for me? Again, true.
Field (Male Guest)
I'm not trying to Question how she wants to do things. I just want to make time with her.
Field
Okay, so what did you guys do? How'd it go?
Field (Male Guest)
We went to a popular restaurant, but she wouldn't let me pick her up, which was kind of an awkward thing. I was like, no, no, I didn't tell.
Alexis
I feel like that's way better.
Jeffrey
It would be great if women could trust all men to keep them safe, but, like, you just can't. Like, especially if you're just meeting on an app.
Field (Male Guest)
I'm not trying to question how she wants to do things. I just want to make time with her.
Field
So you're able to roll with the punches. And you met her there and what happened?
Field (Male Guest)
Met her at the restaurant. She looked exactly like her pictures, which is always nice in this day and age.
Jeffrey
Yeah, for sure.
Field (Male Guest)
And then we had a very pleasant get to know you conversation. And then I thought it would be pretty proactive to order her a drink, because I've been to this place several times, and I know what their menu's like.
Jeffrey
Okay. Did you know what she liked?
Field (Male Guest)
I made an educated guess.
Field
Okay, okay.
Jeffrey
Where'd the education come from?
Field
So how many jello shots did you buy?
Field (Male Guest)
Based on her online presence, I thought she was adventurous and like to have a good time. So I know in advance that this restaurant serves a really awesome novelty drink called a tamagotchi tea. And I was like, you gotta try it.
Field
Tamagotchi tea sounds cool.
Jeffrey
It sounds like you're gonna be puking in a bathroom in about an hour to.
Field
Okay, it sounds strong.
Jeffrey
Did she like it?
Field (Male Guest)
Yeah, I don't think she hated it. Oh.
Brooke
But it was obvious that she.
Field (Male Guest)
She just said it wasn't really her thing. So at that point, so as to get rid of any awkwardness, I was like, all right, well, I don't want it to go to waste. So I just finished it.
Field
Wait, you drank her drink and your drink?
Alexis
Well, hopefully she just got a new one.
Kohler Ambassador
Yeah.
Jeffrey
I mean, no, but he's worried about how much alcohol you're downing.
Field
Two drinks at once now.
Field (Male Guest)
Yeah, I did. I did. And now that you guys said, I have gotten her another drink, I was
Jeffrey
like, you didn't get her another one. She just sat there with her water while you down to sobering up bevies.
Brooke
I was good.
Field (Male Guest)
But I was also aware of the fact that I didn't. I had already tried to push the drink, and she didn't want it. So I didn't want to be the guy who was like, you got to drink something. You got to drink something.
Field
Okay. Yeah.
Jeffrey
So awkward moment for sure.
Field
There's been a lot of awkward moments. Did any positive things happen when you two were hanging out?
Brooke
Yes.
Field (Male Guest)
At one point, a waiter came over and was refilling our water glasses, and
Field
he was like, you need this, bro. After full Tamagotchi.
Field (Male Guest)
Exact opposite. He was like, how long have you guys been together? And.
Unidentified Female Co-host
Oh.
Field (Male Guest)
And she was like, this is our first date. The guy was blown away. And he was like, no, no, no, no. Because we were giving off a vibe. Like we had been together for a month or years.
Jeffrey
Oh, my God. What a wingman for you out of nowhere.
Field
So how'd things end?
Field (Male Guest)
The. The date kind of just naturally wind it down, and she decided she was just going to catch an Uber, so I went outside to wait with her while the Uber was coming to pick her up. Yeah, that's why I know the date went well is because she leaned in and kissed my cheek.
Jeffrey
Oh, that's cute.
Starbucks Narrator
Okay.
Field (Male Guest)
And then she did the side hug when the. The Uber showed up. So, yeah. Yeah. All in all, great date.
Field
Okay. But just going back to the cheek kiss, it's not traditional. Like, you ended it on a great note. Like, Alexis, what do you think about going in for a cheek kiss?
Alexis
I told you so many times, I don't think a kiss necessarily means you like someone.
Brooke
I think I'm capable of telling when
Field (Male Guest)
someone is being platonically nice and when someone is romantically interesting.
Field
Okay.
Jeffrey
Okay. So you think it's a second for her?
Field (Male Guest)
Yes, I got a vibe.
Field
But she's not calling you back.
Field (Male Guest)
This is also true.
Field
Okay, different type of vibes. So let's find out where she actually stands. When we come back, we'll call Sabrina for you and try to get you your second date update right after this. Hold on.
Jeffrey
Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning. Second date update.
Field
The more we learned about Field and his first date with Sabrina, the hotter and hotter it sounded.
Jeffrey
Oh, my goodness.
Field
First of all, it happened on the sexiest day of the week. A Tuesday after work. Nice. Then he ordered her a novelty cocktail, which he ended up drinking himself.
Jeffrey
It was called a Tamagotchi tea, which. Yeah, the name alone sounds powerful. Sounds like a headache.
Field
So thumbs up there. And it ended with her initiating a cheek kiss and a side hug before getting into her Uber and telling the driver to punch it as quickly as he could. So, all good signs by my book, but remember, I'm the guy who gets people showing me their bunions on a first date, so. Field, by comparison, you are looking Pretty good, my friend.
Field (Male Guest)
Thank you. Okay.
Jeffrey
Hey, what was your last interaction with her? Did she text at all after the date?
Field (Male Guest)
Just to say that she got home safe. And after that it was communication silence.
Unidentified Female Co-host
And this is one big rumble roll. Yeah, whatever that word was.
Jeffrey
Rigmarole.
Unidentified Female Co-host
This is a rigor mortis roll.
Field
Yeah, that's it exactly.
Unidentified Female Co-host
Am I right?
Field
So let's revive this rig mortise roll and call Sabrina. We'll see where her head's at if she answers the phone. I'm going to dial it right now. Here we go.
Brooke
Hello?
Field
Hey, is this Sabrina?
Jeffrey
Oh, my gosh, yes.
Brooke
Who's this?
Jeffrey
Sounds like you are very busy right now.
Field
Yeah, sorry. This is a radio show called Brooke and Jeffrey in the Morning.
Brooke
Okay. Why are you calling me?
Field
Yeah, it's part of a thing we do called the Second Date Update, where we help listeners who've gone out with somebody once and they're not getting a call back. We can reach out on their behalf to see if there's a reason why,
Jeffrey
and it won't take very long.
Field
Yeah, so if you're busy, we'll make it quick.
Brooke
I mean. Okay. I don't have a lot of time. What's going on?
Field
Okay, well, so we were contacted by a guy that you went on a date with recently. Seemingly nice guy named Field.
Brooke
Yeah, yeah, I remember him.
Field
Okay.
Unidentified Female Co-host
Okay. Yeah, he's got a unique name, so.
Grainger Announcer
Yeah.
Field
So he three fields last week. Yeah, yeah, he told us.
Field (Male Guest)
He.
Field
He told us about your date and he had a lot of nice things to say about you. He's a little bit confused why there hasn't been a second meetup, though.
Brooke
I mean, that's kind of dumb of him.
Jeffrey
Oh, really? It's obvious. Yeah.
Alexis
Wow.
Jeffrey
Did he do something? That was really stupid?
Brooke
Guys are so clueless. So, I don't know. Did he tell y' all that he wanted to pick me up?
Field
He did mention that he wanted to pick you up and said you felt uncomfortable with it, so.
Jeffrey
And we told him that that's totally normal.
Brooke
I mean, yeah, I don't want his hands on me. I just met him.
Jeffrey
Yeah.
Unidentified Female Co-host
Whoa.
Field
Hands?
Unidentified Female Co-host
Why would he put his hands on you ever?
Brooke
Because he literally wanted to pick me up. Like, he's 63 and I'm 5 2, and he was like, oh, you're so cute and small. Let me pick you up.
Field
Oh, not pick you up, like drive you in his car.
Unidentified Female Co-host
Oh, my gosh.
Brooke
Well, he also offered to pick me out of the car, but that was less weird than physically trying to pick me up. In a restaurant.
Field
Oh, my God.
Brooke
The first minute we meet.
Jeffrey
My best friend is five foot, and it is one of her biggest pet peeves. It's the weirdest thing. People want to pick her up all the time.
Field
I know. And she never gets to do it.
Jeffrey
It is the strangest phenomenon if you were a small woman.
Brooke
Yeah. It's like, I'm not a circus freak. What are you. What are you doing?
Field
Okay, well, yeah, so that is definitely a bad way to start the date.
Jeffrey
I'm sorry. He met you at the restaurant and immediately asked you that?
Brooke
Yeah. I mean, that wasn't a good first moment. Yeah. Yeah.
Kohler Ambassador
Okay.
Jeffrey
Okay. So did he ever, like, make a comeback?
Brooke
I mean, he's not a terrible guy, but it was just. So I. We sat down, he ordered me a drink because he was like, this place is awesome. They have the best drinks. So he, like, ordered for me, and it was gross. It was super disgusting. Cocktail.
Field
We heard about the Tamagotchi tea.
Brooke
Yeah, yeah, it was gross. And then he was like, oh, you don't like it? Okay, I'll drink it. And then didn't offer to get me a new one.
Jeffrey
Yeah, we went over that with him, and he realizes that maybe that wasn't the best move on his part.
Starbucks Narrator
Totally.
Field
But he did say there was a good moment where the waiter came over and thought that you two had a lot of chemistry.
Jeffrey
Oh, yeah, that was a good moment.
Field
Wasn't that nice?
Brooke
No, no. That was just like, a moment where I was like, are all men clueless? How does this waiter not get that? I'm, like, sitting far back in my chair, there is no chemistry happening?
Unidentified Female Co-host
Or he did see, and he was trying to salvage.
Jeffrey
You guys were acting like you'd been in a relationship for 10 years and the magic was gone. Maybe that's what he meant.
Field
Okay, I don't even want to ask about what happened outside the restaurant with the cheek kiss and the side hug to end it, because he thought that was great.
Brooke
Yeah. That was kind of another funny thing. I had decided, you know, maybe I'm being too hard on this guy or whatever, but. So we go outside, and I had told him that, like, I get really cold, like, really easily. And so I kind of thought maybe he'd, like, give me his jacket. I was, like, kind of shivering, waiting for the Uber, and he didn't. Instead, he talked for, like, 10 minutes about why, like, our blood temperature regulation. I don't know, just, like, why we get cold, basically.
Jeffrey
Okay.
Field
I mean, that's kind of nice of him, but again, not as helpful as putting a jacket on.
Brooke
You standing there shivering, and he's wearing a coat like.
Jeffrey
Okay, so what was the cheek kiss? What message did you want to send with that?
Brooke
Bye. I just wanted to say bye. I don't know. I wasn't trying to send a message.
Field
She was trying to suck warmth out of his cheek because she was so cold. So. Okay, all right.
Alexis
Well, because his radar, he remember, he's like, I have a great radar for when girls like me. That adds up with everything you just said.
Field
Yeah, I wonder what his radar is pinging right now. Because, Sabrina, you don't know this yet, but Field has been listening on the other line waiting to talk to you.
Brooke
Oh, no, no, no, no. Really?
Field
Yeah.
Brooke
Come on.
Field
I'm serious. I feel you there.
Field (Male Guest)
I'm here. If I could, I could briefly just explain something that I think that was brought up is I come from a very large Irish Catholic family, and all the men in my family are very big guys, and all of the women are very petite. And Sabrina very much like my mother, my aunts, my sisters, my cousins.
Unidentified Female Co-host
Comparing her to your family.
Jeffrey
So what does that have to do with anything?
Field (Male Guest)
In my family, a guy picking up a woman is not a big deal.
Brooke
But you know them. But you know these people. Yeah, Yeah.
Field (Male Guest)
I just think. I just think my genuine affection was maybe misinterpreted. I had no point meant to bully you or harass you at that point.
Jeffrey
I don't think she said you were bullying or harassing.
Brooke
Yeah, I didn't feel like that. It was just an odd thing to ask. And it's like, let me. Let me actually, like, introduce myself first. It was just weird. It was just weird.
Jeffrey
Yeah. I mean, like, you're six. 3. Do people often say, let me climb up your back?
Brooke
Yeah.
Field
Do you normally pick up women the first time that you meet them?
Field (Male Guest)
I come from an athletic background. I come from a very affectionate family.
Unidentified Female Co-host
So pick them up. Or I bounce them or try to
Field
kick them in between some field goal posts.
Jeffrey
I'm very athletic. I'm just gonna throw it out there. Feel that. Maybe that is a practice that you should just reserve for just the women in your family. Yeah.
Field
And in your Irish Catholic school.
Jeffrey
Yeah.
Field
Yeah.
Field (Male Guest)
All right, all right. You have a point. I shouldn't pick women up. And, Sabrina, you have a point. I should have picked up on the fact that you were cold outside. If I known you were cold, I. I would have given you my jacket.
Field
Or I feel like her saying, I get cold when I'm outside is A pretty strong hint.
Jeffrey
Okay, but here's. Here's the thing. Field is saying he's a guy that just needs direct communication, and I think that's okay, right?
Brooke
No, that's not okay. Because I feel like I was pretty direct, except I get cold easily. And then he decided to explain why my body gets cold.
Field
Yeah, but in this Irish Catholic family, I get cold easily Means something different.
Jeffrey
It means you need more gluten.
Brooke
You know, it wouldn't have been an
Field (Male Guest)
issue if she had just drank the Tamagotchi tea. Everyone wants to get picked up then.
Bowen Yang
Okay.
Alexis
Makes it sound more like a plan.
Jeffrey
Well, I mean, a little sketchy.
Field
I want to go out on a limb here, just like that waiter, and say I feel the chemistry.
Jeffrey
Oh, yeah.
Field
You seem to have known each other for a very long time based on this conversation.
Unidentified Female Co-host
I don't even know why we made this phone call.
Field
I mean, I'm just going to throw it out there. Sabrina, I'm assuming you. You definitely want to see Field again for another day. We would pay for it.
Brooke
Yeah, no, I think I'm good on this one.
Jeffrey
Is that direct enough, though, for Field?
Brooke
Yeah.
Unidentified Female Co-host
He's like, wait a minute.
Brooke
I do not want to go out again. How's that one?
Field
How you reading that, Field?
Field (Male Guest)
I'm picking that up. Nice.
Jeffrey
That was good.
Field (Male Guest)
Here we go.
Field
He's learning.
Unidentified Female Co-host
It's a very good hint.
Field
Well, Field, you got your answer. It's a no this time. But you've learned some important lessons for the next time you meet a young, small, beautiful woman out for a first date, what are you gonna do?
Field (Male Guest)
Not try to lift her in the air. I didn't know that was the right answ.
Unidentified Female Co-host
But we would like to invite you to the studio. Jeff and I would love some uppies.
Field
Oh, yeah. Can you do two at once?
Brooke
Yeah, yeah, Easy, man.
Field
I cannot wait to see your bunions Feel.
Unidentified Female Co-host
No.
Brooke
Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning.

7592 says I'm a woman and I'd never thought about having a guy physically pick me up on a first date. It sounds kind of fun.
Jeffrey
Oh, that means you're a tall woman. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Field
Like Brooks said, she has a short female friend and people want to pick her up all the time. So I guess it really is a thing.
Jeffrey
It is. It's the strangest thing.
Field
I've never had that instinct to do it personally, but I'm just not as romantic as most guys.
Jeffrey
Or you're not tall enough?
Unidentified Female Co-host
No.
Alexis
Maybe.
Field
That's probably another text says yikes. Now when I ask a girl to pick her up before a date, I'm gonna have to get real specific about it.
Unidentified Female Co-host
I mean with a car.
Jeffrey
May I drive you in my vehicle?
Field
Give the make and model in the like license plate too, just to be safe.
Jeffrey
Yeah, that didn't work. Out.

This episode of "Brooke and Jeffrey: Second Date Update," titled “Tamogatchi Tea,” centers on Field, a listener who reached out after being ghosted following a first date with Sabrina. The hosts, in their classic playful style, delve into what went right—and spectacularly wrong—on their date, and ultimately get Sabrina on the line to discover why she went silent. The show dives into hilarious and awkward moments surrounding modern dating expectations, communication styles, and the hazards of misreading signals, all through the lens of both Field and Sabrina’s very different experiences of their night out.
Field’s Dating Philosophy: Field claims “low maintenance women” don’t really exist anymore, which he says is fine because he believes women “should know their worth.”
“It’s not like past generations where they had to put up with troglodyte men...I think they needed a sense of what they're going to get in a relationship with you. And so out the gate, you should try to treat them like a princess.” — Field (05:45)
Date Scheduling ‘Rigamarole’: Field describes back-and-forth negotiations for scheduling the first date, as Sabrina ruled out all days except Tuesday.
“She doesn't do Wednesdays...and then she doesn't do weekends...and then she doesn't do Thursdays or Mondays. And so I was like, okay, do you want to meet on a Tuesday night?” — Field (07:00)
Meeting Up: Sabrina declines Field’s offer to pick her up at her place, so they meet at the restaurant.
“It would be great if women could trust all men to keep them safe, but...especially if you're just meeting on an app.” — Jeffrey (07:42)
Novelty Drink Mishap: Field tries to impress by ordering Sabrina a “Tamagotchi Tea,” believing she’d be adventurous. She hates it; Field drinks it himself and does not offer a replacement.
“She just said it wasn't really her thing. So as to get rid of any awkwardness, I was like, all right, well, I don't want it to go to waste. So I just finished it.” — Field (08:59) “She just sat there with her water while you downed two sobering up bevies.” — Jeffrey (09:22)
Waiter’s Misread Moment: A waiter assumes they are a longtime couple because of their “vibe,” much to Field’s delight.
“We were giving off a vibe. Like we had been together for a month or years.” — Field (10:03)
“She leaned in and kissed my cheek.” — Field (10:34) “I think I'm capable of telling when someone is being platonically nice and when someone is romantically interesting.” — Field (11:01)
(starting at 12:54)
Literal ‘Pick Up’ Gone Wrong (13:10–14:50):
“He literally wanted to pick me up. Like, he's 6'3" and I'm 5'2", and he was like, oh, you're so cute and small. Let me pick you up.” — Sabrina (14:27)
"It's like, I'm not a circus freak." — Sabrina (15:02)
Drink Disaster Redux (15:17–15:44):
“It was gross...and then he was like, ‘Oh, you don't like it? Okay, I'll drink it.’ And then didn't offer to get me a new one.” — Sabrina (15:34)
Zero Chemistry (15:56–16:11):
“How does this waiter not get that I'm, like, sitting far back in my chair, there is no chemistry happening?” — Sabrina (15:58)
No Chivalry, Just Science Talk (16:28–17:01):
“I was kind of shivering, waiting for the Uber, and he didn't [offer his coat]. Instead, he talked for like 10 minutes about why...our blood temperature regulation.” — Sabrina (16:57)
Meaning of the Cheek Kiss
“I just wanted to say bye. I wasn't trying to send a message.” — Sabrina (17:08)
Field’s Explanation: Field explains his upbringing in a large, affectionate Irish-Catholic family; for them, picking people up is normal.
“All the men in my family are very big guys, and all of the women are very petite. In my family, a guy picking up a woman is not a big deal.” — Field (17:57, 18:01)
Hosts Clarify Social Nuance:
“Maybe that is a practice that you should just reserve for just the women in your family.” — Jeffrey (18:47)
Communication Misses:
Summing Up the Chemistry:
On Over-interpreting Date Signals:
"He thought that was great." — Field, regarding the cheek kiss.
"I just wanted to say bye. I wasn't trying to send a message." — Sabrina (17:08)
On Literal vs. Figurative ‘Pick Up’:
“When I ask a girl to pick her up before a date, I'm gonna have to get real specific about it.” — Listener text, Field reading (23:36)
Hosts Addressing Field’s Learning Curve:
"What are you gonna do [on your next date]?" — Field (31:40)
"Not try to lift her in the air. I didn't know that was the right answer." — Field (Field guest) (20:42)
This episode spotlights how small social missteps and mismatched expectations can snowball into a dating disaster. Field’s well-intentioned, but oblivious behavior (from physically picking up his petite date to not recognizing cold cues) receives a reality check from Sabrina and the hosts. The show provides laughs through awkward confessions and misunderstandings, while also highlighting the need for better, more direct communication—and an awareness that what’s considered affectionate in a family can come across as wildly inappropriate with a stranger.
“I do not want to go out again. How’s that one?” — Sabrina (20:18)
Listeners are left entertained, reminded of the perils of the modern dating world, and perhaps a little more cautious about when and how to offer literal “uppies” on a first date.
