Brooke
Wow. What an amazing year it has been here on Broken Jeffrey in the Morning. It's been special.
Jeffrey
Thank you so, so much to our listeners. You're the reason why it's so amazing.
Brooke
Yeah, seriously. Thanks to everyone who found us and subscribed and forced their significant others to listen against their will, insisting like, no, no, trust me. It gets funny eventually. You just gotta wait like 10, 15, 20 minutes. You're only two or three years in. When you get to year four and five, they get almost good. Yes, we almost hit a groove. And that's how we were when we got to our number one second date update. This was one of the favorites, I think, of all time. It's called the actual note.
Jeffrey
Oh, my God, I love this one.
Brooke
And it's nothing like the actual notebook.
Jeffrey
Oh, shocking.
Brooke
So here it's the number one second date update. Enjoy. Second date update. You know, one of my favorite memories of all time is going on a road trip with my family once I turned 21. And all of us simultaneously yelled at our driver to stop when we saw the sign. Wait, Jurassic Bar. Hey, wait a minute. Not the Jurassic.
Jeffrey
You were with your mom?
Brooke
Yeah.
Jeffrey
What?
Brooke
The whole family? Mom, dad, and the sister. And it was just a regular bar, but with a dinosaur themed night.
Jeffrey
Okay.
Brooke
And so if you went in, you got a dollar off your draft. If you roared like a dinosaur.
Jeffrey
Oh, that's good.
Brooke
And I don't know how many drinks my mom had that night, but again, we had a private chauffeur, so it didn't matter.
Jeffrey
Oh, I thought you meant like when you said driver, like Uber.
Brooke
No, he's our driver.
Jeffrey
So your driver.
Advertiser 1
I see.
Brooke
And I'm sure our listeners have also had a lot of fun memories of certain themed nights at different pubs around the country. And today, a guy named Reed sent us an email saying he believes he met the girl of his dreams recently. I love themed bar night.
Jeffrey
I love when you relate to the regular people.
Brooke
Jeff, what's your driver's name?
Reed
Unfortunately, no butlers in my life. There's a siren in my life.
Brooke
Hold on, hold on.
Jeffrey
Oh, I've been to one of those theme bars where it's like, er, have you, have you seen those? No, honestly. And they would give you shots in syringes and that was when you gave.
Brooke
Birth to your children. I know you had a lot of drugs pumping through you. That wasn't a bar. Sorry about that. Reed, let's get to you and. And your. Your date. Where did you go? What was this themed bar night?
Reed
It was very fun, very cool. It's a note passing night. Have you heard of one of these?
Brooke
Middle school Alexis has officially checked out already, though.
Advertiser 3
You changed my mind.
Brooke
Can you explain how does it work?
Reed
So the way it actually works, when you go in, there's different tables set up. So what you can do is while you're there, you look around the tables, and if you see someone that you might be interested in, you can anonymously send them a note from your table.
Jeffrey
Oh, I have done something like this, actually.
Advertiser 3
Have you?
Jeffrey
It's like. Is it like a singles event?
Advertiser 1
I did it on Valentine's Day.
Jeffrey
So cupid is the one who passed your notes between you. Someone dressed as Cupid. But if you don't ever know who the note's from, how do you meet the person?
Advertiser 3
You could sign your name or not.
Advertiser 1
When I went, oh, it could be anonymous.
Brooke
Okay.
Jeffrey
I don't know how his worked, but.
Brooke
So how did it go for you, Reid?
Reed
It ended up going really well. I'd really kind of been in this just habit of really only meeting through the apps, and I wanted to actually meet in person, and it seemed like a fun way to transition into that.
Jeffrey
Can I ask you, Reid, during the event, how many notes did you pass about other people? Like, how many women were you note passing to?
Reed
So what ended up happening early on? I saw one girl who was rather attractive and I was rather interested.
Brooke
Okay, is this the girl that we're talking about for your second date update?
Tina
It is.
Brooke
Can we know her name?
Reed
It is. Tina.
Jeffrey
Tina.
Brooke
What did you write to her?
Reed
Yeah, actually, you know what? I put in the first one.
Jeffrey
What'd you say?
Reed
I put down, in two minutes, I'll walk past your table and I hope to see that beautiful smile again. And then I had to lay a dot, dot, dot, and I said, I already did that four times.
Jeffrey
Oh, it was a joke.
Brooke
Okay. About hopefully she got it because it could be taken differently. Hovering.
Jeffrey
Did she write back and said, oh, you're the weird guy that keeps walking past me?
Brooke
That's that smell.
Reed
No, she. She liked it. She wrote back. And then we ended up passing the notes all night.
Jeffrey
Oh, just you and her?
Reed
Yeah. And then the last one had her phone number on it.
Brooke
Worked out silent in this bar.
Advertiser 3
Like, can you not talk?
Brooke
Good Question. Can you at least hear, like, just paper?
Reed
Yeah, you can, actually, because it's. People come in groups, so she was actually was in a group.
Jeffrey
Oh, okay. Okay. So you're chatting with friends. Less awkward than I'm imagining.
Brooke
So at any point, do you go over and, like, actually speak to her with your voice, or is it all note passing?
Reed
Here's the thing. You could, but that night, we didn't. I think we were just kind of enjoying the fun of the theme. And when she gave me her number, I ended up texting. And we've been texting for a couple weeks at this point, and we still haven't actually spoke.
Jeffrey
What? You have no idea what her voice sounds like?
Reed
No, I have no idea.
Tina
Wow.
Brooke
Okay, this is interesting. We don't have a whole lot to go off of then. I guess what we need to do is hear some of the texts that you guys have sent back and forth.
Jeffrey
Oh, that's a good idea. Like how flirty they are.
Brooke
Yeah, we got a sense you need that. I think it would give us a good idea of what we're working with here with Tina.
Reed
Here, let me find a good one.
Brooke
Okay.
Reed
I said, when can I see you again? Pick a day that ends in Y.
Jeffrey
That's cute, bro.
Brooke
That's cute. It's so corny that it's. What Alexis.
Advertiser 3
Never mind.
Jeffrey
I was thinking, trying to do math.
Brooke
Yeah. What does the girl math? Yeah, they all live as?
Jeffrey
It's more spelling than math on that one.
Brooke
Maybe Tina's just like Alexis and couldn't figure out a day.
Advertiser 3
Well, I just instantly thought it was only weekdays, and I was like, well, that sucks.
Brooke
Weekends are the best. All right, well, okay.
Jeffrey
What'd she say back?
Reed
She just sent the laughy face.
Jeffrey
Oh. Oh, she laughed at it.
Brooke
That's a good thing.
Jeffrey
It was supposed to set a date.
Brooke
Okay, well, here's the thing is, like. Like, you're obviously laying it on pretty thick with her right away, through all the messages and texts, you're saying, like, she has a beautiful smile. You can't wait to see her again all night. But she reciprocated. But a lot of times with girls, if you lay it on that thick, if there's no chase, they lose interest. Absolutely.
Jeffrey
I mean, that is a thing. You can't be too available.
Brooke
So I get. We have enough, I think, to work with here. You are showing a lot of your cards early on, but maybe we can figure out more when we call her directly and you'll get to hear her voice for the very first time. I hope she sounds like Gilbert Godfrey.
Reed
Hello?
Brooke
Well, who knows? Maybe that would be a turn on for you. We're going to find out when we come back. We're going to call Tina and try and get your second date update right after this second date update. On the phone with us today is a man who is good with his words, at least on paper.
Jeffrey
Yeah, for sure.
Brooke
Ironically, his name is Reed.
Jeffrey
Oh, I didn't think of it either, Joe.
Brooke
She's just so perfect for this. Please tell me his last name is right.
Jeffrey
No, that's his brother.
Brooke
And I'm playing the Notebook music right now because his first meeting with a girl named Tina involved an actual notebook.
Jeffrey
It's actually a pretty cute meet. Cute.
Brooke
Yeah. They were both at a themed bar night where you could write letters to people at other tables and pass notes back and forth, and that's how we ended up getting Tina's number. They have been texting ever since. He just hasn't locked down an official date yet.
Jeffrey
Yeah, like, maybe he's too eager is kind of what we were maybe thinking.
Brooke
Maybe picking up on. There's also the tiny problem of the fact that they've never actually spoken words with their voices yet to each other.
Jeffrey
Small issues. Yeah, that's what texting's for.
Brooke
Yeah. All including him. Gonna hear her voice for the first time. So we've heard some of the text, but I do want to get to the last text that she said because we never were able to get to it. Read. Can you read us the final text that you sent that she never responded to?
Reed
I said, I miss you. Like Stormtroopers miss their targets.
Brooke
That's a lot, guys. Because they're not. They're, like, notoriously bad at.
Jeffrey
Yeah.
Brooke
Shooting their guns.
Jeffrey
Anyone in Star Wars?
Brooke
Okay, I got it.
Jeffrey
No, I got it, but it's a lot. I would be freaked out a little bit if someone said, I miss you.
Brooke
Yeah.
Jeffrey
When I haven't spent any time in person with them.
Brooke
Yeah. And just like, you know, going over what. What we were saying before, you've already kind of put all of your cards down on the table for her.
Advertiser 3
It's like you flipped them and then you flipped them again.
Jeffrey
Yeah. Are we gonna try to hide some?
Brooke
Maybe. Maybe we try and be a little more coy when we're actually speaking with you. Yeah.
Advertiser 1
Yeah.
Reed
Okay. Okay. Maybe it was a little much. I thought it was fun, but maybe you guys can help balance me out.
Jeffrey
No, that's all right.
Brooke
It is fine. Two people get there together.
Jeffrey
It's sweet. You seem Like a sweet dude.
Brooke
I like you. We're all here for you. Oh, actually, I'm going to be making the call, so never mind. Shut up. No, you're also here. Okay, I'm going to dial Tina right now. We get to hear her voice for the very first time. Here we go.
Tina
Hello?
Brooke
Oh, hi. Is this Tina?
Tina
This is Tina. Who is this?
Brooke
Tina, You're. You're on the radio right now with the show called Brooke and Jeffrey in the Morning.
Tina
I'm not interested. Thanks. Sorry.
Brooke
We're not selling it.
Jeffrey
It's not a spam call, Tina.
Brooke
Yeah, no, it's a legit thing. We're doing a segment called a Second date Update, and we're trying to help out one of our listeners that you've met before, sort of.
Reed
Oh, my gosh.
Tina
I've heard this before. For real?
Jeffrey
Yes.
Brooke
This is a real thing.
Jeffrey
Isn't that fun?
Brooke
Okay, so I don't know if you remember this, but the other night you met a guy at a note passing bar thing.
Jeffrey
I think it was a couple weeks ago, in fact.
Brooke
Yeah, it may have been a while ago. His name's Reed.
Tina
Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know Reed.
Brooke
Okay.
Jeffrey
Okay, cool. What do you think?
Tina
Um, he was nice. He was cute. Texted a little bit nice. Yeah, yeah, it was, like, fun. And I haven't met him or anything.
Brooke
Yeah, we heard that. We. We've heard a little bit about the bar night. What was the bar night like for you?
Tina
I hadn't done anything like that before, but I ended up, I think, exchanging numbers with, like, three guys.
Advertiser 2
Oh.
Jeffrey
Oh, cool.
Brooke
You were popular.
Tina
Yeah, it was, like, more successful than I thought it was going to be.
Jeffrey
Okay, so you've been. You've been texting with a couple of guys from the thing?
Tina
Yeah, I actually ended up going out with one of them, like, last week.
Brooke
Oh.
Reed
Cheated on our boy.
Jeffrey
It doesn't cheat. What are you talking about?
Brooke
Everyone calm down. Well, okay, that's totally fine, but has Reid been in your mind at all?
Jeffrey
Radar?
Tina
I mean, like I said, we, like, text on and off throughout the week, and he's, like, cute, he's funny, kind of flirty. He's always, like, really jokey over text. But the thing is, he just hasn't actually asked me out yet.
Reed
Like.
Brooke
I see. So you've been waiting for Reed to, like, make the move, and he hasn't gone for it.
Tina
Yeah, I just don't have time for, like, a text buddy or pen pal. Like, do you want to bring me out or not?
Brooke
Yeah.
Jeffrey
Well, that's a great Question.
Brooke
Well, before I tell you what I have to say here, where is your relationship with the other guy at that you've been out with one time?
Tina
I mean, it's just kind of that, like, it was a good date. He was cute, he was nice. We had, like, a little bit in common.
Jeffrey
But it was dinner, so, ew, dinner.
Tina
I told him I'm down to go out again next week. But it wasn't like, oh, my God.
Jeffrey
Head over heels immediately.
Brooke
It's just like, meh. But you're not exclusive with that guy, right?
Tina
No. Oh, my God. That would be crazy.
Advertiser 1
Okay, good.
Brooke
I'm really glad that you said that. And you know who's extra happy to hear it is Reed, because he's been on the other line listening this entire time.
Tina
Oh, my God. I was so worried you were going to say that.
Jeffrey
Our boy Reed.
Brooke
Reed has been wanting to talk to you. Reed, are you there?
Reed
I'm here. I'm here.
Brooke
Hey. What? Good news, Reed, say hi to Tina for the very first time with your voice. Oh, yeah?
Reed
Yeah. How about. Tina, hands up. I'm in the FBI and you're on my most wanted list.
Brooke
All right, Read, you're just talking. Are you not listening to what she was saying before about.
Jeffrey
Try again. I think he got nervous.
Reed
I'm just having a little fun. I'm just having fun.
Brooke
Now we understand.
Jeffrey
Maybe let's turn it off.
Reed
No, no. All I'm saying is that when it comes to Christmas and Santa asks me what I want. Oh, no. Well, Tina, I'm sending him a link to your ig.
Tina
What are these, one liners?
Brooke
I know, bro. It's pretty cringe, man.
Reed
It's not cringe. It's just because she reminds me of someone.
Brooke
He's got something, right?
Tina
I don't know if I like that.
Brooke
Who does she remind you of?
Reed
My next girlfriend.
Brooke
Oh, my God.
Jeffrey
Read, man, that was kind of funny.
Brooke
It kind of implies you have a current girlfriend, too, so.
Tina
I know.
Brooke
Don't dissect it, okay? Let's just move on from it.
Jeffrey
Are you trying to just make these guys laugh or are you trying to turn a woman on? You can't do both.
Reed
You got. I'm just flirting with her. We haven't actually talked yet. I'm just. I'm just getting started. I'm just building up something.
Jeffrey
Do you have, like, a normal conversation question?
Brooke
I don't know how Tina's feeling about this read.
Tina
Honestly, I feel like I just, like. I dare you, read. To just say something that wasn't scripted.
Brooke
Maybe just even ask her out, just straight up. Yeah, like, that's a crazy idea. I know.
Jeffrey
I mean, she teed you up better than I've ever heard anyone.
Brooke
She's begging for you to ask her out. Go ahead, read. Now's your moment.
Reed
Okay, well, I'm just wondering if maybe Tina, would you want to be my little spoon? I'm gonna take her out for soup.
Brooke
Soup? What?
Reed
Tina, do you like soup?
Brooke
Nope, nope, nope.
Jeffrey
Wait, what is happening?
Brooke
Why is that a joke? I don't know. It's like something my grandfather would really love. Like, oh, soup. And you're like, grandpa, do you really want soup? No one knows, dude.
Tina
Like, there's someone out there who's gonna love this. It's not me.
Jeffrey
Well, no, no, I think he was trying to ask you out right there.
Brooke
If he's not gonna do it, I'm just gonna do it for him. Because the two of you. To go out on a date in person. And we would pay for the date. Tina.
Reed
Hey, Matt. You kind of. That's what I was building up to. I was just gonna ask her that.
Brooke
Well, we can't wait, like, 40 minutes for you to get every line out. We need to get to it. Yeah, we don't have a lot of time here, so go ahead, ask her yourself.
Reed
Okay.
Brooke
No lines.
Reed
You're single, I'm single. I feel like this is a problem we can solve together.
Brooke
Okay. God.
Jeffrey
What?
Brooke
I never should have trusted this guy.
Tina
I feel like I'm gonna fight fire with fire and I'm gonna say, unfortunately, at this point, I'm gonna make like a tree and leave. Yeah, we should.
Jeffrey
Like, now she's speaking Reed's language.
Brooke
I know.
Jeffrey
It could have been perfect, but we're.
Reed
Perfect for each other. You hear that? How she's funny. I'm funny. We have similar humor.
Jeffrey
Okay, I think she was being sarcastic.
Tina
You're misreading that.
Brooke
Yeah. Read, you gotta work on being more direct with these women that you like.
Jeffrey
And just be yourself for a second. You don't need all these lines. Read, you're. You're a charming guy, man.
Brooke
She's wanting you already.
Reed
That's is myself. That's what I like.
Brooke
Okay, okay, well. Well, maybe leave yourself on the side of the road for a second.
Jeffrey
Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning.
Brooke
You know what? This is his fault on that one. You think we can't take the blame for what just happened?
Jeffrey
Yeah, because there's. How does he memorize them all?
Brooke
I don't know where he has those from written on his hand. But there is a window after you meet someone when you really need to ask them out. Like you only have a certain amount of time and not only did he miss his window, she opened up another window for him and he missed that one too.
Jeffrey
And she screamed through the window. This is the window.
Brooke
I will say yes to your question. So gentlemen, make sure to find your window and jump through it. Yeah, Even if it's 20 stories up, some women are just worth it.
Jeffrey
And the thing is, funny is good, but not funny. Every single thing. You know what I mean?
Brooke
Now you know why it's impossible for me. We solved the mystery finally. But maybe we could solve your mystery. If you need help with your dating life, email the show. Brooke and Jeffrey: Second Date Update – The Actual Notebook (#1) [December 30, 2024]
In the episode titled "Second Date Update: The Actual Notebook (#1)", hosts Brooke and Jeffrey from the popular iHeartPodcast series delve into the intricacies of modern dating through the lens of a unique listener experience. This episode, released on December 30, 2024, offers an engaging exploration of themed dating events, the transition from virtual to in-person connections, and the challenges of securing that elusive second date.
The episode begins with Brooke expressing gratitude towards their listeners, highlighting the special year they've had:
“Wow. What an amazing year it has been here on Brooke and Jeffrey in the Morning. It's been special.” [02:49]
Jeffrey echoes this sentiment, thanking listeners for their support and engagement:
“Thank you so, so much to our listeners. You're the reason why it's so amazing.” [02:54]
Transitioning into the main segment, Brooke humorously recounts early struggles in finding their rhythm, only to hit their stride with the "Second Date Update":
“This was one of the favorites, I think, of all time. It's called the actual note.” [02:59]
Jeffrey adds with enthusiasm:
“Oh, my God, I love this one.” [03:27]
Brooke reminisces about a family road trip that involved a dinosaur-themed bar night, setting the stage for the listener's story:
“One of my favorite memories of all time is going on a road trip with my family once I turned 21... it was just a regular bar, but with a dinosaur themed night.” [03:31 - 04:07]
Listener Reed joins the conversation to share his experience at a unique bar event focused on anonymous note-passing. He explains the concept:
“When you go in, there's different tables set up. If you see someone you're interested in, you can anonymously send them a note from your table.” [05:34]
Brooke light-heartedly teases Reed about his approach:
“Here, let me find a good one. I said, when can I see you again? Pick a day that ends in Y.” [08:50]
Reed elaborates on his strategy, noting his intent to stand out:
“I put down, in two minutes, I'll walk past your table and I hope to see that beautiful smile again... I already did that four times.” [06:26 - 06:56]
Reed shares how Tina, the recipient of his notes, responded positively to his messages, leading to ongoing text conversations:
“She liked it. She wrote back. And then we ended up passing the notes all night.” [07:22 - 07:27]
Brooke highlights the sweetness of Reed's approach but also points out potential pitfalls:
“You're laying it on that thick early on... If there's no chase, they lose interest.” [09:26 - 09:28]
Reed candidly admits to perhaps being overly eager:
“Maybe it was a little much. I thought it was fun, but maybe you guys can help balance me out.” [12:07 - 12:18]
In a dynamic twist, Brooke and Jeffrey decide to intervene by calling Tina live on the air to facilitate Reed's pursuit of a second date. The interaction begins with Tina's initial hesitance:
“I'm not interested. Thanks. Sorry.” [12:43 - 12:58]
As the conversation unfolds, Tina reveals she has been on a date with another guy but remains open yet non-committal about how she feels about Reed:
“He's cute, he's funny, kind of flirty. He's always, like, really jokey over text. But he just hasn't actually asked me out yet.” [14:22 - 14:36]
Reed attempts to break the ice with humor, but his one-liners fall flat:
“Would you want to be my little spoon? I'm gonna take her out for soup.” [17:33]
“You're single, I'm single. I feel like this is a problem we can solve together.” [18:37]
Brooke offers constructive criticism:
“Read, you gotta work on being more direct with these women that you like.” [19:17]
The episode underscores the importance of balance in expressing interest without overwhelming the other person. Brooke advises Reed on the significance of timing and directness:
“There's a window after you meet someone when you really need to ask them out... even if it's 20 stories up, some women are just worth it.” [19:44 - 20:05]
Jeffrey emphasizes authenticity:
