Bill Bubba Bussey
Well, hello again, everybody, and welcome to Bubba on the Lake. I'm your semi retired, mostly washed up host, formerly of the Rick and Bubba Show, Bill Bubba Bussey. I thank all of you for joining us here in the Melayella Studio. Our website is Bubba on the Lake dot com and of course you can email me at Bubba at Bubba on the Lake dot com we have the message line that I always enjoy. It may be one of my most entertaining things that we get to do at 308 Big Lake. You can call and leave a message. You make it to air or you may not. It just depends. We also want you to subscribe, turn on notifications. We appreciate you doing that. And several of you folks took time to drop emails to some of our clients this week. And I certainly appreciate it and they did too. They always enjoy hearing from you and that, that does make a difference. We were at episode 21. We're well over half a million downloads now on all the platforms and headed toward 1 million now. So it'll take us a little time to get there. But we need to spread the word. We still need to grow the podcast and I appreciate all of you that are doing that, you know, post about it, talk about it, spread the word. Anything you can do will help us and help us to keep doing this. And we want to add some more programs. We've got some ideas for some things coming up. We're going to have to have some more help. Honestly, part of this staff now is no help. Yeah, I know, I know. I'm talking about y'. All. And we've got, we've got to get some people that really know what they're doing in here, which will help greatly. We have a great podcast. Many of you have been asking about the big beautiful bill. Senator Tommy Tuberville. Sometimes we call him Coach, sometimes we call him Senator. He wants to be called Governor. We're going to have him on, he is going to run through some of this, cover a lot of topics. We're going to cover the big beautiful bill. We're going to cover tariffs, we're going to cover deportations, foreign ownership of our farmland, and believe it or not a little bit of football which you have to talk about if you have Coach Senator Governor Tommy Tuberville. Tommy's always been very good to us and very willing to share his time and we certainly appreciate him and his staff doing that. To cover these topics that you guys are emailing me about, I try to be, you know, kind of responsible to that and kind of see what y' all are talking about. And we haven't been real news heavy here on the podcast. Quite frankly. It can be depressing. But there's some of this we need to cover and he is a great source to do that. Hopefully we'll have Betty along also a little later in the podcast to cover a few issues. So we want to get started. We're going ahead and take this commercial break for these sponsors who we love and adore. We appreciate them being on this. And then we're going to get right back with Senator Tommy Tuberville.

A lot of life can happen between sips of Dasani. You know the life moments big and small that are worth getting thirsty for life like organizing a family movie night under the stars or hearing an old favorite song and having an impromptu dance party or finding a new dinner recipe that the whole family loves. The crisp, clean taste of Dasani was made for all of life's thirst worthy moments. Dasani because life happens between sips.

You know one thing I love about Buffalo Wild Wings? You can get wings with any of their 26 sauces and dry rubs for takeout and delivery. That's like bringing an entire B dubs home with you, which you can't do. I tried. I've knocked down so many walls only to then be told to halt construction because I'm not zoned to be a sports bar. Kinda just looks like a big pergola or something. Because of the lack of walls, at least these 26 sauces and dry rubs are available to go Buffalo Wild Wings. Let's go Sports Bar Just got that new boat.

Well on the celebrity hotline we have a guy we call him Coach, we call him Senator, and we may end up calling, calling him Governor before it's all said and done. Senator Tommy Tuberville. Senator, welcome to Bubba on the Lake.
Bubba
Bubba, thanks for letting me be on. You know, I've been called everything being a football coach over the years. You know, it's amazing what, what them fans call you, some of them stadiums, and sometimes when you lose your own fans call you a lot of different things. But it's, it's great to be on. Good to hear your voice, man.
Bill Bubba Bussey
We're glad to have you and, you know, part of the new world order here doing a podcast, and we're excited about that. And I'll tell you, Coach, one of the things we've just been inundated with people wanting to know about the big beautiful bill, and I said, it's so big and it's so beautiful, it's hard to kind of lasso this thing down. But I figured you would be as good a source as anybody to talk about this, the good, the bad and what we had to put up with. What's your thoughts on the big beautiful bill?
Bubba
Well, first of all, thanks for doing podcasts. You know, this is where I get most of my news from is a lot of podcasts. I listen to them and they're very. So you're right on, right on time with what you're doing now. And thanks for doing it and spreading the good word. You know, the big beautiful bill is about 3/4 of it, maybe more than, even more than that is very, very beautiful. As President Trump, then we got part of. It's not as beautiful. It's not quite as, as, as tough as I would have liked it been because we're 37 in debt and we've got a couple more debt now. We will have two more bills starting really, starting today. We're starting on the second one, the second big beautiful bill that will be done hopefully before Christmas and then we'll do one before the 250th birthday party next July 4th. So we're not done. But the big thing about this bill, Bubba, is it's going to save people a lot of money with their taxes. The big thing about the bill was getting the Trump tax cuts permanent, the ones we've been under for, I guess, five or six years now. And it's the 22% cut in your taxes, which everybody wants more money in their pockets. We need it. We need people to have money in their pocket where they can spend more to get our economy going. Again. And so that's going to be the number one thing in this bill. Now, if you look at some of the other things, one thing is we're trying to get Social Security and Medicaid and Medicare straightened out. It is an absolute mess. The federal government over the years have basically taken the money that you've sent up here in terms of your federal insurance, Social Security and Medicaid Medicare and they've squandered it. And unfortunately there's not much left in there. But what we do have, we need to do the right way and use the right way. People that paid into Social Security should get it. And those that are seniors and are getting Social Security now, Bubba, will not have to pay taxes that. About 80% of them. As long as you don't have a full time job which is outstanding, it's going to have more money for pockets for seniors. The other thing is we're getting 1.4 million illegals off the Social Security roles. And Joe Biden, his administration decided that these illegals should get Social Security although they've never paid into it. They're going to be off the rolls. Medic. Medicaid also is going to be cut back. If you are a single mom with kids, you're going to be able to get Medicaid. That's really what it was for, help people that couldn't work because they had responsibilities. All these lazy folks that don't want to get up and go to work and want to lay around and watch the View on television, they're going to have to go back to work if they're going to have health insurance. So it was a lot of good things in there that has to do with the federal government, Bubba. And at the end of the day, I think it's really going to help. But the one thing before you start talking again, we are helping our farmers. We're giving them better pricing for their, for their crops. And if we hadn't done that, our farmers would have been out of business in a very, very short period of time.
Bill Bubba Bussey
Senator, let's break that down a little bit because I'm not sure everybody fully understands part of that. What you said, based on my conversation with people, the tax cuts and Job act or J or TCJA was enacted by Trump on the first term, but it was set to expire. So you would, you would be facing a tax increase without this bill that you mentioned.
Bubba
That's right. And you know, the Democrats are complaining about it, but they could have cancel it any time because they had the House, the Senate and the White House, first couple of years of their term. But they wasn't about to raise taxes on, on, on people out there. They just wanted it to expire where they wouldn't be blamed for it. But Republicans now have the House, the Senate and the White House. And so we went back and redid it and made it permanent. And so if it ever, it's ever going to go out of business in terms of these tax cuts, it's going to be the Democrats. And so they're going to be between a rock and a hard place.
Bill Bubba Bussey
One of the things in here that Trump campaigned on, and this is a promise made, promise kept, there will be no tax on tips and overtime. So for people who are really working hard, who are having to put the steps in every day, this is going to be quite a raise.
Bubba
Yeah, it's huge. You know, if you work 40 hours and anything over that, you're not taxed on it. That's a reward, and it should be a reward because a lot of people don't work 40 hours and, you know, they never receive overtime. But for people out there that are having to do extra work because we don't have enough plumbers, electricians, we don't have enough carpenters, people that use their hands, we want to give them extra pay. And so this is a, this was an idea of President Trump. It was an idea, too, about waitresses and waiters, people that actually work in restaurants that don't make a lot as a wage.
Bill Bubba Bussey
Senator, Senator, we're losing you there just a little bit. You might need to spin back where you was there with the phone. Try that one more time.
Bubba
Well, we're talking about the tips. Tips are something that waitresses and waiters, you know, they depend on the tips because they don't make a big hourly wage. And we want to make sure the hours that they're putting in that they don't have to pay as much taxes because it's simply at the end of the day, they live off those tips. So we want to make sure those tips are very, very much in place and they can have a better life and a bigger salary because of that.
Bill Bubba Bussey
So one of the other big additions in this is border security and immigration. It looks like ICE is getting a big, big increase in their budget. Will we finish the border wall with this?
Bubba
We're going to finish the border wall. And here's the deal, Bubba. It's very expensive, and I'll kind of break it down as Homeland Security broke it down to us when we Were going over this bill. It's basically $25 million per mile to build this wall. Now, that's not just including the wall itself. It includes the technology, it includes the border and ICE agents that it's going to take to defend that wall. It's going to take and pay for the judges that we can have down there that can look at what these people are and who they are when they come across and decide whether you can come across or you got to go back home. So there's a lot of moving parts of this. So basically, at the end of the day, it's a four year payment that's going to take, basically it pays for the next four years. All of President Trump's term of immigration laws, walls, border patrol agents. The only thing right now that I'm very concerned about is when we get all this done, what are we going to do about the northern border? Because my understanding is these cartels know how to get around it. But right now we've got to stop the inflow, and President Trump's done that, of illegal immigration coming across the border because we cannot afford to take care of these people.
Bill Bubba Bussey
Senator, with that kind of money being spent, you would think there is an economic impact, a boost to that, creating millions of jobs, helping small businesses with contracts that will be dealing with all that construction. And like you're saying, you're also talking about processing centers. And we saw the new one in Florida down at Alligator Alley the other day. That part is good. But with us cutting taxes, spending more, we're also adding to the deficit. What about those that say, hey, hold on a minute now, as conservatives, we're going the wrong way.
Bubba
Well, that's a good point. But here's the deal. We are spending around $70,000 a year, the American taxpayer, on every illegal that's in this country. They got to go home. If they're here and they're not a citizen of this country, they're illegal, they got to go back. Because $150 billion is a lot of money, but it's a lot more that, Bubba, if we keep these people here. There's not 5 or 10 or 15 million illegals here. There's closer to 50 million people. And it's costing us a fortune to put health care, food, housing, everything that goes along with it, the family and education. It is a multibillion dollar process. We can't afford it. So $150 billion is just a down payment on making sure that we don't have to spend a trillion dollars on these people in the next five, 10 years.
Bill Bubba Bussey
So an investment up front that will produce savings down the road.
Bubba
Exactly, exactly. It's something we got to do. And again, it costs a lot to deport them. It was very easy for them to get here in terms of letting Joe Biden and his cronies, criminal cronies, let them across the border, say, hey, just go in there and vote for us and we'll do everything we can for. We'll give you anything that you want. Just vote for us. But that scheme is over with. They got to go home. They got to leave here. And again, it's going to cost us to get them out, but it would cost a heck of a lot more if we left them in here.
Bill Bubba Bussey
Senator, tell us a little bit about AI I know there was some AI components to this and some regulatory issues dealing with states and AI where are we at on the AI Part of this?
Bubba
Well, the AI is. It's the future, bubba. Now, you. And we grew up and there's a rotary phone, and then we found a way to find a. Have a computer and then the Internet here. Then we got cell phones. AI is the next thing from that, that will see this country really explode economically and physically with construction and things like that. Just think about this. Right now, we are. We are way behind in this country and AI as compared to China. China can build a bridge in three months. That takes us three years. And they build it with, obviously they have to have workers, but mostly AI puts these together. And so the same thing that in this bill, there's a lot of AI that will be used down at the border. There's a lot of AI that will be used in pretty much everything that we're going to do in the future. But we have to invest in it. And President Trump knows that. If we don't invest in AI and we continue to fall behind China, we're going to be in huge trouble. Whether, whether it be economically or militarily, right now they can build two submarines to every one submarine that we build. Same thing with ships, same thing with airplanes. And so AI is the future for this country, future for the world. And for some reason, during the Biden administration, they worried more about immigration, they worried more about men and women's sports than we did in investing in things like AI to make sure this country stayed number one. Right now, we're not number one in the world. And what we're doing in terms of competing against some of these other countries. So AI is the future. We're going to have to Invest in it. And a lot of it's going to be in, in the state of Alabama, you know, especially Huntsville area down around Mobile. But AI is the future. Our kids need to grow and understand it. There's going, there's going to be a lot of jobs in AI that will be created, very good jobs. And we want to be on the forefront in this country of it. But right now we're not because we're four years behind after the Biden administration absolutely ran us in the ground.
Bill Bubba Bussey
We're talking to Senator Tommy Tuberville, Republican, Alabama Senator, what about the, the tariffs that are being imposed? Are they going to help, hurt? Are they just a barking dog in the yard that we hope we never have to implement? How is all that going to play out?
Bubba
It's going, it's going to be both, Bubba. It's going to hurt. It's going to help in some areas, going to slow down some things that we need to do. But we have to, to get to fair trade. There's not fair trade. Around the world. People have, they've been coming to the party we've been putting on for the last hundred years. Europe, Asia, all these countries have been coming to the big party that we've had economically and they've never brought anything. Now it's time to bring gifts and the drinks with them. And they need to help out and put this party on because the American taxpayers can't afford it. We have absolutely enabled every country to live off the American taxpayers and we hadn't been able to keep up with the Joneses, so to speak. So President Trump understands that. He understands that in Japan there's not one American made car. Every car comes from some other place. They don't buy our products. Same thing. If you look at India, for instance, you know, we produce a lot of shrimp on the Gulf coast of, of Florida and Alabama and Texas, we produce a lot of shrimp. But India just floods our country and other countries with shrimp that really are raised in areas that you wouldn't eat the shrimp if you knew where it was grown. Same thing with catfish coming from China, I mean, excuse me, from Vietnam. Vietnam is a, they flood our country with 3 billion pounds of so called catfish every year. When in our state of Alabama and Mississippi and Arkansas, we are big raisers of catfish. But we can't afford to keep up with that trash fish and the trash shrimp that India and Vietnam sent here. So President Trump's trying to level the playing field where our farmers in those areas can compete along with cotton, soybeans it's just amazing with the tariff situation that we've gotten in. But sometimes you have to take a step backwards before you can go forward. President Trump is having some of these negotiations as we speak today. And I'm a good friend with Scott Best at the Secretary of Treasurer. He's done a great job with these tariffs, but it just doesn't happen overnight. And you can't do them all at one time. They're standing in line waiting to do a deal. But it takes weeks to do a deal for one country. And that's the reason President Trump continues to push this timeline back. Because you, if we could, he could snap his fingers and get it all done at one time, he would. But it's almost impossible to get years and years of work done in a short period of time.
Bill Bubba Bussey
Senator, I know another, another thing of interest and something that has concerned me for years, didn't make sense, is the availability of foreign ownership in our country far as purchasing land, farmland, that kind of thing. If you, if you look at how the hoops that we have to jump through to buy land in another country, sometimes it's not even a possibility. Tell us a little bit about that. And I know you're, you're taking some steps to limit that.
Bubba
Yeah. And we've, we've recognized that over the years. Let me give you a little pretext to this. I'm on the Ag Committee here in Washington, D.C. and I've seen this all, you know, come down the pipe in the Biden administration. Biden administration very much disliked and still do Democrats dislike the farmers of this country because they think that we ruin the soil, we change the climate and we do things that are absolutely nonsense. So what do they try to do? In the last four years, they've tried to put our farmers out of business. They raised the input cost. Diesel, $5 a gallon. Now it's around 2:80 to $3. Fertilizer tripled in price. Farm equipment has doubled and tripled in price. Farmers can't make a living. But the Biden administration didn't care. They wanted our farmers to say, listen, you know, go on down the street, sell your farmland, we'll get our food and stuff from overseas. That's not how we need to do this. We need to be self efficient here. We need to make sure that we take care of ourselves. We found out during COVID that all of our drugs come from other countries and we were stuck between a rock and a hard place. And so now we're going to be in the same situation. With food if we don't watch it. So what has happened is because of these, a lot of our farmers in the last four years, we have lost 150,000 farms in the United States and we've lost 25,000 farmers. And why has that happened? They can't make a living. They can't get the price they need to make a living or even break even. And so they're selling out. And who's coming in and buying this farmland? Foreign countries. And rightly so. If you're a farmer and you have this land and you can't make any money, you're going to sell it to the biggest bidder. And a lot of these biggest bidders are Russia, they're China and people from Europe. So are the Bill Gates, those groups that, that have all the money. And so we're stuck. And so first of all, what we got to do is we've got to prop up the farmers. And as I said earlier in our big beautiful bill we just passed, we give a lot of help to the farmers to where they got a better chance of making a little bit of money. We don't want them selling out. That's the number one thing. Because we want to be able to have farms in this country where we can supply our own food. We cannot sell farmland to China, China, even a small detail here in the state of Alabama alone, foreign entities own 2.2 million acres of farmland. And that's just in our state of Alabama. Now. There's hundreds of million acres that are owned by foreign countries over all the rest of the states around our country. And it's got to stop. We cannot continue to do that. So we even had a press conference today with the Secretary of Agriculture, Secretary of Defense. This is a national security problem. We have to be self sufficient. We have to do things here in this country, make things here in this country and grow things here in this country. If we don't, we're going to be out of luck when times get tough and times get tough around the world very quickly, as we know when war start or we have some kind of outbreak of a Covid or a pandemic like we had back four or five years ago. So we got to, we got to run this country like a business and it has not been run like a business. President Trump putting it back on the map where people can make a dollar off of what they do and be able to keep our economy going. But I tell you what, right now our country is in huge problem with 37 trillion in debt, a Lot of our young people don't want to work, don't want to do the hard things like farming or being Christians. We got to get back and get our hands dirty and make this country great again by doing our own work and not letting foreign people do it for us.
Bill Bubba Bussey

Well, on the celebrity hotline, we have Senator Tommy Tuberville. Sometimes he's called coach, sometimes he's called senator. And if he has his way about it, he may be called governor. What about that, Tommy? You want to be governor, huh?
Bubba
Well, you know, bub, I'm a builder and you know, I'm, I put football teams together and hired people and, and tried to win all my life through coaching. You know, as a senator, you work with 100 people. You're not, you're not somebody that's going to make all the decisions. You just work with other people to get things done. If you're governor, you get to hire your staff, you get to hire the cabinet. You get to do things in a, in a way that you can make your state better. We've got 5 million great people live in the state of Alabama. I want to go back home. I'm in the fourth quarter of my life, and I want to put my hands on our state and make it grow. President Trump has given more power back to the states. He believes in federalism. He believes in the money being spent by the state governments and not by federal government. And as I talked with him, when I decided to run, I said, if you're successful, Mr. President, we're going to be sick successful in Alabama. So I'm looking forward to it. But I got another year and a half here, Bubba, and I look forward to helping President Trump continue to get his agenda across the go line.
Bill Bubba Bussey
Well, let me ask you a little bit about the governor situation. You. I think you scared off most of the opponents that might be a threat. I've seen some polling data. Looks like you're in pretty good shape there.
Bubba
Yeah. You know, and there's not really anybody qualified to be governor as I am of what I've done in my past of putting things together and building and working with people and being a leader. You know, you got to be able to be a leader and be a delegator of authority, and that's what I plan on doing as a senator. We always work pretty hard at Mason, Alabama. The. The same thing as, you know, as governor, senator.
Bill Bubba Bussey
Cell phone got you there just a little bit. Tell us, is there, is there, is there. Is there one thing that you see that needs the most attention in our state? What would you. What would you make a priority, day one?
Bubba
Well, it's always about the economy, Bubba. It's always about making things better, you know, for the people that live in your state, put more money back in their pocket, making a good place for people to live and raise a family and go to church and be safe. And so there's so many things that you have to do. And again, to do all those things, number one, your economy has to be good. People have to have good jobs. You have to have safe neighborhoods. You have to have safe streets. You've got to be able to back your law enforcement. You've got to do things to educate your kids better. You can always do that sometimes. We get away from that. Right now, we're looking at things that shouldn't be in our classrooms, the books, the diversity, equity, inclusion in the state of Alabama. We're going to run our state on merit. You work at it, you develop it and you earn it. I used to tell my football players, this country doesn't owe you anything other than an opportunity to take advantage of a great education and work hard to achieve your goals. And same thing as any kind of citizen, whether you're in the state of Alabama, California, New York, Texas. The opportunity is there from this country. Our forefathers gave their lives to give us freedom to do that. And I'm looking forward to helping continue that and make things more affordable. And the opportunity is there to do whatever you want as a young person to achieve a goal.
Bill Bubba Bussey
Well, you mentioned a topic that almost everybody in our state enjoys talking about. That's football. How is the recent developments in that? Do you see those as positive stuff? I think most everybody thought it was a little out of control. Are we. Are we any better today or what else needs to be done on that front?
Bubba
No, no. College athletics is out of control. You know, and I've always been for players making money. But, you know, this bill that was. Or this law that came down from this California judge saying that, you know, I want to make sure that all of our athletes have name, image and likeness availability to where they make money off of those three things. And I'm good with that. But that didn't have anything to do with pay for play. The judge meant that, hey, you go to a university, get you an education, if you can make money off your name while you're there, market yourself, you know, have at it. And but what. Unfortunately, we've got into a situation where kids go to university. It's not about education. It's all about making money. But it's making money as playing and not off your, as we call it, name, image and likeness. And so there's so many things that we've tried to fix up here in Washington, D.C. with this, but at the end of the day, we hadn't made much progress. It's out of control. And I think you're going to have a lot of fatigue from a lot of fans across this country that pay a lot of money to go these games that are saying, listen, I don't even know who's on the team anymore. There's no loyalty. Nobody's there to get an education. They're just there to play sports. And that's not what college is about.
Bill Bubba Bussey
Well, I feel sorry for the coaches. And I think you saw this with Coach Saban. I think it helped move him out a little quicker than maybe he wanted to. But, you know, when these players show up and they Just the first question is, how much you going to pay me? And like you said, we're in a situation. Now you see a college athlete that's going to play four or possibly five years, depending on how he got there, if he was a juco player or not, but he's going to be on four or five different teams and just the brand loyalty is not there. And it's going to be like you said. I mean, you sit in the stand, you pull for your jersey, you know, your helmet, but it's going to be a massive turnover. And you just. I don't know how you're going to ever develop really good teams that way.
Bubba
Well, you can't. And it's not about sports as much as about education. That's what our colleges are about. And if, number one, whatever we do in sports, or whether you're just average, just a normal student going to school to get an education, that's what you're there for. Now. Everything else is second, you know, it's an honor and a privilege for a university to pay for your education, your room and board and your books and everything that it costs. And it's free to get that. Now to make a little bit of money off that on the side is fine, but to make five, six, seven million dollars a year and then the next year you take another $100,000 to transfer to another school, that ain't what it's about. And if we're, don't get back to the. Excuse me, the idea of giducation, we won't make it. College sports will be gone and we'll be. Everybody will be cheering for an NFL team or an NBA team instead of a college team.
Bill Bubba Bussey
Senator, are you. Do you get to have any fun? I know you have to work a lot. I know there's a lot of travel in D.C. do you ever get to have any fun up there?
Bubba
There's, you know, there's a little bit of camaraderie, but, you know, like last week, Bubba, we were on the floor 30 hours straight without leaving the building. Of course, we had a little food brought in, but we voted about every 30 minutes. And you build a lot of camaraderie with that. But it's, it's a job and you know, I don't mind it. You know, we all signed up for it, we ran for it, we campaigned for it, but you know, we, if we can keep the, the focus on making our country better and getting back to number one again, I'm all for it. But if we continue to have disagreements like we have right now with the Democrats. They could care less about funding the police. They don't like law enforcement. They like, you know, social, social agenda. This idea of men and women's sports, which they are for crazy. It is. Yeah, it is. It's ruining. It is absolutely ruining our society. And it's, you know, again, it's more about power than anything else up here and we got to get away from that. Our every bit of our focus should be about making America first and the best it can possibly be for the American taxpayers. And if it's not for that, we shouldn't be doing it.
Bill Bubba Bussey
Senator, I'm going to ask you to put your coach hat on for just a minute. Tell me about Alabama and Auburn. What kind of seasons they go have.
Bubba
Well, who knows because I'll go used to, you can go, you know, they got eight seniors back or most of the starters back. You don't know until the to the beginning of season who's on the team. I will have to take the roster and look at Auburn and Alabama both going, all right, where'd this guy come from? You know, how did he play last year? This guy was at Washington or this guy was at Notre Dame or this guy was at Texas A and M. And then what happened to our quarterback? He was in his second year. Where's he at now? He's at Kansas or he's at Missouri. I mean, it's the craziest thing I've ever seen. You can't build anything. And that's the reason Nick Saban got out. That's the reason I wouldn't want to be in it today because we're builders. We were somebody that from the old school that you bring in 25 new guys a year. You know, at the end of four or five years they're still going to be with you if they can keep their grades up or they can stay away from injury. And that experience was going to build and make you a better team. You don't see that anymore. And so it's just the loyalty is not there, the education is not there and bubba, it is absolutely going to ruin it. And I hate it for, for the people that support college sports. And who is that? It's the fans. And that's the reason that if we lose our fans it's going to be over with.
Bill Bubba Bussey
Senator back closer to your home and your stomping ground of Auburn, Hugh Freeze has had a couple of good signed signing classes. But been a while since they've had a winning season. Hadn't been to a bowl game a couple of years. Is he going to make it?
Bubba
He got a win. I mean, this is his third year, and he hadn't been near as productive as you need to be at Auburn or that work. Whether you're at Auburn, Alabama or Georgia, you got to win, and you don't have to win every game. But I think at the end of the day, you've got to put a product on the field that's going to represent your university, whether you're Alabama or Auburn or Jackson State and making difference. I mean, people want to see the effort and the dedication and at the end of the day, some, some success. And Hugh knows that this is going to be a very critical year for him. You know, I can't tell you. I mean, in about six months, you'll know that it's, you know, these contracts have gotten way out of hand. I think one thing that you're going to start seeing is you're going to start seeing more money put into the athletes and less money put into the coaching. Yeah, because now it's not about this. It's not about coaching anymore. It's about. It's about the players that you have, and the players are going to be there unless you have the money. And why would you. You know, if you look at this one situation, I'm not. Hey, I'm not pointing fingers, anybody. I'm just. I'm. I'm just looking at this from a. From a perspective of why would you do this? North Carolina pay $9 million a year for a coach. Now, Bill Belichick won a lot of football games, but he wouldn't have won them. He wouldn't have won them in the NFL. Had he not had Tom Brady, he'd have been like everybody else. Now they've hired him in North Carolina paying 9 million a year. Now, if they'll go out and spend 20 or 30 million dollars a year on players, that 9 million is going to look great. But if they go out there and put in 4 or 5 million dollars in players and a 9 million in a coach, it ain't going to work. And now you're going to see less salaries for coaches, and you're going to see more salaries and higher payments for players. If you don't, you're not going to win. There's a. Texas this year has spent 40 million on their football team. Texas Tech has done the same thing. Last year, the team that won the national championship, Ohio State, paid the most for their team, $25 million. So if you're gonna win, you're gonna have to pay. And a lot of these schools don't have the money, Bubba. And it's. It's gonna be. Now, with this new ruling, every. Every school that's gonna participate for national championship is going to have to pay $20 million out of their budget to every athlete. In terms of spreading the wealth around that. That came down from a lawsuit. You still got about 100 lawsuits out there. So who knows where college sports is headed?
Bill Bubba Bussey
Well, I think, too, you got to look at the economics here. There's only so much money the university has to spend on these kind of things. There's only so much fan support money they're going to spend. And it's obvious now, with players making more, that that has to come from somewhere, right?
Bubba
Oh, yeah. It's going to have to come from the fans. It's going to have to come from people that are going to step up. And as I said earlier, you know, there's going to be some schools that will every few years put that money out. And. But at the end of the day, there's going to be donor fatigue. You know, you just. People can't continue to put millions of dollars into their teams, and if they do, they'll be successful. Boy, they get for it. They get pat on the back. They're not getting anything. NFL. These, these owners make money.
Bill Bubba Bussey
Yeah, yeah.
Bubba
You know, these owners put millions of dollars into the salaries of their players. But at the end of the day, the more they win, the more money they get back from television and from winning playoff games and Super Bowls. Well, that doesn't happen in college football or college sports. That doesn't happen. So there's a lot of. There's a lot of positives about college sports. And as a. Go back to it, it ain't about the money. It's about education, learning time restraints, how to work, how to work with other people, how to learn to win, how to learn to lose, and. But also just being able to earn that work ethic that gets you across the goal line to get your opportunity successful. Well, at the end of the day, if we don't start getting back to those principles, we're losing what we had gained for so many years in this country. I've always said this. There's two things that made this country really, really good because you learned a lot from it. One was the military. Military that we got. They teach you discipline, they teach you how to work, you know, how to, how to do things, work with your hands and Then there's sports from K through 12 through higher education. Sports have made this country so great because we learn how to win, we learn how to lose, but we learn how to work with each other. We're losing that now. Now we've gotten money involved in it. And money is the root of all evil when it comes to something that overshadows what you're supposed to get out of something, such as college sports.
Bill Bubba Bussey
Senator, thank you for taking time with us today. We've covered a lot of ground, and when you're back this way, holler at us. We'd like to sit on the porch and relax a little bit.
Bubba
All right, Bubba, thank you. Thank you for having me on.
Bill Bubba Bussey
Thank you, Coach. We appreciate it. And I know we'll be talking to you some more.
Bubba
All right.
Bill Bubba Bussey
Thank you, Senator. Tommy Tuberville. Sometimes coach, sometimes Senator, and may end up being governor. We'll be back in just a minute.
Tommy Tuberville
Where's Bubba?
Bubba
I'll tell you where. He's on the lake.
Tommy Tuberville

Well, we're back. And we are now joined by the lovely Betty Lou. Betty, how are you, honey?
Podcast Guest
I'm doing very well. How are you?
Bill Bubba Bussey
Well, you. We were worried you were not going to make it back for this edition of the podcast. You've had kind of a busy day, and I know a lot of people probably don't fully understand that. Well, they. They think you live the glorious life of a podcast star.
Podcast Guest
Yeah, I'm living the dream. Oh, me. I had to go to our precious son's apartment today to back it up a little bit.
Bill Bubba Bussey
There you go, eating that mic up.
Podcast Guest
I tell you, I'm either too low, I'm too high.
Bubba
You're good.
Bill Bubba Bussey
Just keep.
Podcast Guest
Okay. I've been to my son's today, trying to help him clean and get his apartment ready to check out. So that's what I've been doing today. I've been cleaning and packing and went to see Thomas Dudney for my teeth cleaning.
Bill Bubba Bussey
Proud sponsor the podcast.
Podcast Guest
Right. Good to see them all. They're always so nice, so y' all go see them.
Bill Bubba Bussey
But anyway, to clarify, you're. What you're talking about is Hunter is leaving an apartment. He's actually trying to buy his first house ever.
Podcast Guest
Right.
Bill Bubba Bussey
And we're trying to go through that. And it's just a little starter house. Not real big, but at least he will not be paying rent, and he'll hopefully get a little equity out of it. I've been urging him and Caitlin to do this for a while, and they just haven't got around to doing it right.
Podcast Guest
Yeah. But the apartment required a little cleanup, and he was working today, so I drove here or to Birmingham for me. So what kind of mess was Dan Wasn't extreme. You know what I mean? It certainly was not up to my standards of cleaning, though. I've been told I'm a little ocd.
Bill Bubba Bussey
And you know what? You know what? Honestly, we joke you about that, but that's a great habit to have. I'd rather you be over the top cleaning than messy.
Podcast Guest
Yeah, it could be worse. Yeah. Mm, sure could. Oh, lordy.
Bill Bubba Bussey
So have you given any more thought to Betty? Say what? Because, you know, we need to. We're looking at spinning up some more podcasts. We want to do a sports show for the fall coming up called the Tailgate. Tailgate show. That ought to confuse everybody. Really good. Have you thought any more about Betty? Say what?
Podcast Guest
Well, I've thought a little bit about it, and I guess I need to ask listeners, what is it you want me to talk about is it just various things, what's going on in life, fashion, what I find on Amazon that I. I think that I buy over and over as some of these people. What? What is it?
Bill Bubba Bussey
Well, I wish you would just produce a segment, record it and give it to me. Let me put it on this podcast. You, Whatever you want to do.
Podcast Guest
I may interview you. Well, I love snakes or something here about that.
Bill Bubba Bussey
Yeah, that's, you know, getting that time of year.
Podcast Guest
Yes.
Bill Bubba Bussey
So. But we talk all the time on this podcast. You need to do whatever Betty say, what is going to do, like you're, you know, showing things to do in the kitchen or.
Podcast Guest
Yeah, I do have a good chicken recipe, actually.
Bill Bubba Bussey
Okay. So you want to talk about recipes?
Podcast Guest
No, not necessarily.
Bill Bubba Bussey
Well, the ladies would love that.
Podcast Guest
Yeah, they would. Yeah. I mean, I know a lot of guys that cook, you know.
Bill Bubba Bussey
Yeah. I'm not one of them. I wish I was a better cook. I would have to apply myself. And currently I'm still knee deep in a lot of electronics.
Podcast Guest
Yeah, I would. Let's put that on the back burner. No pun intended. And let's get all this cleaned up. I'm anti clutter also when it comes to this office.
Bill Bubba Bussey
Well, it is. And you've done a pretty good job. When we move from Birmingham here to the lake, we downsized about 3 to 1 on floor space and in the Birmingham house was too big with the kids gone. But it's been. I have not done as good at downsizing as you have because I have a lot of stuff I thought, well, I want to go through when I retire and work on that or try to restore it or something. And, you know, we got some TV stuff here playing with. But I just haven't had a chance. I mean, really, you know, I'm staying pretty busy. I mean, with Jack State and the podcast. I. I mean, Jack states during the day, the podcast is here at night, and we got. Hey. Full. Full plate.
Podcast Guest
Yep. Yep. I guess so. That's what you say.
Bill Bubba Bussey
Yeah. You. You didn't get to hear Senator Tuberville, so.
Podcast Guest
No, I have not.
Bill Bubba Bussey
You've not going to be able to make comments on his comments, right?
Podcast Guest
No, I did not hear that. So.
Bill Bubba Bussey
And I kind of hate that. I'm looking. The dog is chewing on something here in the studio and, well, you know, she appears to be very taken with the Cat 5 cable down there. Don't really want her to get into that.
Podcast Guest
I think she's chewing her paw.
Bill Bubba Bussey
She's got a bed right there. Why didn't she get in there.
Podcast Guest
I don't know.
Bill Bubba Bussey
You know, dogs.
Podcast Guest
Yeah. You never know what they're gonna do. Anyway. Yeah. I would love to have talked to Tommy Tupperville today, but I was, as I said, in Birmingham all day, so.
Bill Bubba Bussey
I'm really may end up being the governor. You may get another chance.
Podcast Guest
I know. Yeah. That would be exciting.
Bill Bubba Bussey
Oh, gosh. What are we doing?
Podcast Guest
Our daughter's in Montgomery, so that would work out good.
Bill Bubba Bussey
Yeah, she. She's enjoying that. And we need her to go ahead and get her a house or something, you know.
Podcast Guest
Yeah, I don't know that.
Bill Bubba Bussey
Start making some payments, but, I mean, we'll see, you know, and we. We never did rent when we first got married. We got a house. It was a starter house.
Podcast Guest
Like little house. Yeah.
Bill Bubba Bussey
Like Hunter's doing. But.
Podcast Guest
Yeah.
Bill Bubba Bussey
You know, while the prices have changed.
Podcast Guest
Oh, yeah, yeah, they have.
Bill Bubba Bussey
You know, it's.
Podcast Guest
You can buy a car now for what we spend on our.
Bill Bubba Bussey
No, you're right.
Podcast Guest
You could buy a used car, but, you know, you definitely could not buy a new car.
Bill Bubba Bussey
Our first house was 1200 square foot.
Podcast Guest
Yeah.
Bill Bubba Bussey
And it cost $45,000.
Podcast Guest
Yep. That sounds right. And we were very fortunate, very blessed to have it.
Bill Bubba Bussey
It was the cutest thing we were. It was new. And in Jacksonville, the rent is so high with all the college students, they drive the price up. So we. I mean, back then, prices for an apartment were $600 a month.
Podcast Guest
Right.
Bill Bubba Bussey
And we bought a house for 45,000. My mom gave us 5,000 for a down payment. And the owner, the guy built it, actually financed it right about that percent. And we were glad to get it. Our house payment was a smoking. 375. Was 325. And we actually went back and refinanced it, started paying more on it so we could pay it off quicker. At 375. Can you believe that?
Podcast Guest
No, I really can't.
Bill Bubba Bussey
It almost costs that to fill up with gas.
Podcast Guest
Oh, I know. Yeah.
Bill Bubba Bussey
It's not as bad as it was a few years ago, but it's. It's still pretty tough. Especially an old diesel loaded up. Well, Betty, thank you for coming by the studio and.
Podcast Guest
You're welcome. You're gonna have to give me a heads up and I'll write down some.
Bill Bubba Bussey
Stuff to talk about.
Bubba
Well.
Podcast Guest
Or kind of get my thoughts together.
Bill Bubba Bussey
I've got a recorder and I can hand it to you and you just go do Betty, say what? And we'll drop it in here. I won't even listen to it. We'll drop it in here and see what kind of segment we got.
Podcast Guest
You might not want to do that to people.
Bubba
What do you.
Bill Bubba Bussey
Let me ask you this because I do respect your opinion on this, and we're. We're kind of working through this.
Bubba
We.
Bill Bubba Bussey
What? You're not a big sports fan, so you really don't care about sports?
Podcast Guest
Well, I've been watching Wimbledon, actually.
Bill Bubba Bussey
Well, I know you're a tennis fan.
Podcast Guest
Yeah.
Bill Bubba Bussey
So what kind of. What do you envision the. The sports show? The tailgate. Tailgate show? How do you.
Podcast Guest
Oh, I have no idea. I don't know what y' all are going to do. I told you I would do some kind of commentary. Now, it'll be very. It'll be comical commentary. Let's just say any of it. I don't know. I'll come up with something. I'll read about your and figure it out. I did okay with my basketball picks. I looked at what I was supposed to pick.
Bill Bubba Bussey
Well, you've been a little sassy around here today. I don't know what you're.
Podcast Guest
I had been here today.
Bill Bubba Bussey
Well, when you have been here, you've been a little. Little sassy with me. I don't know what's going on.
Podcast Guest
I was here for 30 minutes this morning. Been here two hours and fed you. So that. I guess I'm very sassy with that spaghetti.
Bill Bubba Bussey
One down, one to go, folks.
Podcast Guest
Oh, Lord.
Bill Bubba Bussey
Oh, I know it's something. You know, I know I've listened to more podcasts now than ever. I don't listen to the radio much as I used to.
Podcast Guest
I never turned the radio on.
Bill Bubba Bussey
And. And I, you know, I still love that business, but it is just been run in the ground by so many of these big companies and bad operators. You know, the small operators are still doing really good, a lot of them. And yeah, I'm familiar with them and kind of like you know, watching what they're doing, how they're doing it, but, you know, it's. It's tough. No, on the tailgate Tailgate show, it would. It would suit me fine. And we're in the development stage, so that's why we're talking about this. If it was just almost pigskin roundup that we used to do.
Podcast Guest
Yeah.
Bill Bubba Bussey
The problem is getting people together to do it right. Because we're going to have to do it on like a Thursday or Friday and then air it early Saturday morning when people are going to the games. That's kind of the target. Yeah, I know. That's what I'd say.
Podcast Guest
Somebody Said somebody was dreaming about chewing her paw. Something else came, didn't like it.
Bill Bubba Bussey
So that's kind of the vision of that. But I don't know, getting people together, that time of day and the distance involved, you know, I guess we could do it online somehow, but you kind of lose that, you know, that fun part of it, right?
Podcast Guest
Yeah. I don't know how you're gonna pull that off. I don't know.
Bill Bubba Bussey
Do we need to be out on location and do it?
Podcast Guest
Probably.
Bill Bubba Bussey
Who all do I need to get on it to do it?
Podcast Guest
I don't know.
Bill Bubba Bussey
Well, the pay kind of people. The pay ain't gonna be real good to start with, I can tell you that.
Podcast Guest
Hunter bus would probably do it. He's got pay for that new rug or whatever it is he needs for that house.
Bill Bubba Bussey
Oh, he's gonna need a lot of things. He's gonna have to do a lot of extra work.
Podcast Guest
Yes. Yes, he is.
Bill Bubba Bussey
Well, Betty, thank you for dropping by the studio. You've been insightful as always. You're just lovely and beautiful and you're just hot as a pistol. And I'm honored to be married to you, baby.
Podcast Guest
Well, you're welcome.
Bill Bubba Bussey
That's what I'm talking about. That's what I'm talking about. Folks, thank you for tuning in to another edition of Bubba on the Lake. Hope you enjoyed Senator Tuberville. He was very kind to to stay with us and cover a lot of topics. Betty, thank you for stopping by. And that will probably wrap it up for yet another edition of Bubba on the lake. And remember, folks, being on the lake is not necessarily a location. It's a state of mind. Woo mic drop.
