We're going to try to clear that out today and answer some questions that a lot of you have been asking of me and the show. We have some big announcements to updates on the website. Now, not all of them make them make it to air, but I sure do enjoy listening to those and I just want to thank all of you for being a part of the podcast family. We really do appreciate it, or as some people have called it, Bubba's Navy. Let me start by saying this big news for Huntsville, Alabama. Friday, August 21st from 4 to 5pm we're going to be at Giga Parts and if you're in Huntsville. You know where Giga Parts is. It is a giant electronic store and they have ham radio stuff, they have telescopes, they have printers, 3D printers if you're a gamer. Oh my gosh. Everything under the sun, computers, photography, they got it all. And we, we have been wanting to get back up there and do something with those guys and we're excited to do that on the 21st. Now that ties into the Huntsville Ham fest, which will be, you know, nerd alert. It is tech city. I mean, it's great. Huntsville, I think, and I may be wrong, but I think is now the large, third largest ham fest in the country. Somebody told me that. I don't know if that's true or not. Probably should verify that before I repeat it, but it is, it's definitely one of the biggest in our area. So always enjoy Huntsville. That'll be going on Friday, Saturday, Sunday 21st, 22nd, 23rd, at the Von Braun Civic Center. So, and don't get me started on that. Don't, don't want to rehash that argument again. It was Von Braun, even though we commonly say Von Braun because he was German. His secretary, his secretary who knew him very well, told me personally it was Von Braun. But most southerners could not go with it being Brown the way it was spelled and the fact he was German. So they said Braun. Von Braun Civic Center. It's actually Von Brown. But anyway, not going to chase that rabbit today. Big news. And we may have some more news on that front for Huntsville. I'll share that with you in just a minute. Couple of other notes in the news here that I thought was interesting. Our good friend, Senator Tommy Tuberville, also known as Coach Tommy. He and Katie Britt, our other senator from this great state of Alabama, joined in together to introduce the Postal Executive Responsibility, Physical Oversight and Results Based Management program. How about that for a name short? The PERFORM Act. I love acronyms, I really do. This is the PERFORM Act. Postal Executive Responsibility, Physical Oversight and Results Based Management. That's good. I don't know who come up with that. That's good. But this is what they said. Millions of Americans rely on U.S. postal Service to receive bills and invoices and hear from their friends and family, said Senator Tuberville. In the private sector, if an organization is losing money every year, it would go under. The last thing we need to be doing is handing out bonuses to reward poor management. I'm glad to join Senator Britt to introduce this bill to provide accountability and incentivize better results out of the United States Postal Service. Katie Britt, the other senator goes on to say, it's just about any, it's just about any profession. In just about any profession. Let me get that in there. You don't get rewarded for failing except at the United States Postal Service. It's time that changed. This is not complicated. If the Postal Service does not meet basic performance metrics, the Postmaster General compensation should reflect that. I agree. And most does everybody else. No reasonable country in the world gives a CEO or no reasonable company. You know, if I could read this, it would help. Maybe the Postal Service could help me with that. If no reasonable company in the world gives its CEO a bonus after failing to meet multiple performance metrics. And the Postmaster General who serves the American people should be no different. Everybody on their feet. Thank you. Thank you, Senators, thank you. Thank you so much. I can't believe we're even having to discuss this in the year 2026. Are you kidding me? A lot of the folks who work for the post office, who I know personally, do an outstanding job. They really do. They care, they work, they're hard workers. They want to get everything done, mail delivered. But let's face it, it's not a top to bottom organization of people who are getting after it. Okay? They're just not. I'm sorry if that hurts your feelings, but the numbers don't lie. And the senators are correct. We, we have someone who is paid highly and nicely to be over this system. And they're failing. They're failing us. The private sector companies that deal with delivering packages and mail have proven that this can be done. Do y' all remember, gosh, what year was it? And somebody will fact check me on this. I'm wrong, I'm sure. But Freddie smith that started FedEx at one time said that if he had the contract for the US Mail that he could deliver every letter overnight and do it for like 25 cents. I mean, it was something ridiculous like that. Folks, we, we got to do a better job on this. This, this is something that, if, I mean to say it's long overdue is an understatement. Come on, what are we talking about here? It's delivering the mail. This. I'm, I'm shocked we're even having this discussion. Do you, do you have things in your life or people in your life that have situations in their life and you think, I can't even believe we're having this conversation. I had to have this with a friend the other day. They were in some kind of Crazy deal. And I said, I can't. I can't even believe we're having this conversation. That normal people of our age is even acting and saying these things. This is crazy. And this is one of them too. I feel like hit myself in the head. Hey, I could have had a V8. Anyway, thank you Senators Tuberville and Britt for basic common sense and asking for basic results from someone getting a lot of money from us US Taxpayers because I'm really tired of paying taxes. I'm really, I mean, I'm burned up with it, quite frankly. And there's nothing burns me up more than having to pay that you pay for something like your house and then you have to turn around and rent it back from the government. Oh my God. Don't get me started on that. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm just. Oh my gosh. I can't. Who put this in front of me? Somebody. I'm begging you to stop. I don't want to get started on that. I was in a good mood, but things are about to go south here if we don't move on. Mark your calendars for Huntsville, Alabama. Friday, August 21, 4 to 5pm at Giga Parts. We're back and I'm a little backlogged on email, so I'm going to catch up on a few of these. Have some Questions probably we need to ask. Also in this always entertaining Bubba, I heard top 10's Lamar, list of names for your Tesla. Please have his list on more. I used to love hearing him on the radio show. Tina in the atl, Tina in Atlanta. Tina, I. Let me tell you, top 10 Lamar is one of the funniest people I know and I don't get to see him a lot. We do correspond via email and I have, I have, I've asked him, I said, lamar, will you record a segment of top 10 and I'll play it, I'll put it on. Or just send me the list and I'll do it. Um, you know, in podcasting we got all these restrictions. We're not covered under these licensing agreements that we had on radio, so we can't play all the music we used to play in the little intros, which I hate, by the way, because I love them. We have to play things that are not copyrighted. And maybe I need to get some of you computer gurus on that because with the AI now, I mean, you can turn out some stuff that's not copyright. It's really pretty good. So we need an intro for email, I guess we need an information superhighway update. So, Tina, I hope so. We. I've asked. We'll see how that goes. I pulled a real bone headed thing the other day and I backed into a rock wall in my driveway area. It's the little rock thing between the garage doors. And then ended up. And I feel so stupid. I mean, I want to hit myself with a stick. I'm going to have to get it fixed. I hate to even admit I shouldn't probably have even tubbed y'. All, I did it. You can't really tell it unless you go and look at it. But I know it's there and it bothers me. So we're going to have to get that touched up that it pains me. But yeah, I still love it. I was just talking to a good friend of mine. I won't call any names. Becky Flack from Coleman, and she just got a Tesla too, and she is loving it. And Becky is one of these people, she's bigger than life and she does a great job in real estate up there. We've known her since the early days of the radio show and she is so funny to talk to. She. She is. She is one of these people that analyzed it out and test drove and did that and read stuff. She knew more about Tesla than I did and she finally went and got one and I talked to her and she was having a ball by the way. So yes, I still love it. Bubba. Haven't heard from Betty Lou in a while. When she going to be on again? Susan and Fort Worth, Fort Worth, Texas. We used to have some kin folks in Fort Worth and used to visit there quite a bit. Lovely area. Susan. Hopefully if nothing happens she's going to be on next segment. She has been absent but you have to understand she has a very busy schedule and it's hard to book Betty sometimes. So we're hopefully we'll have her own next segment. Bubba I agree with a caller who like the Bubba Facts segment I think it was going to be called. How about that? I think it would be huge. This is from Claire in Kentucky. Excuse me, little choked up just thinking about it. Claire and I don't know what part of Kentucky you're from. We have some very good friends in Southern Kentucky around Monticello, Somerset area, Lake Cumberland. I have actually swam in Lake Cumberland several times. Claire, I want to do that. I like to. How about that segment? Our staff here is, you know, we're a little limited and sometimes the staff doesn't get everything done I'd like for them to do but we're working on that. So yeah, I kind of like that idea too. I really do. That was fun. I enjoyed that on it was one of the holidays we did was the 4th of July we did that. Next email comes from Patrick Campbell and I know Patrick is in Huntsville. Just finished the latest podcast and it may have been the most informative you've put out Next only to the vacation podcast, the war in Iran, data centers, flock cameras and AM FM radio in your car. It was super informative. Keep it up. You know Patrick, I enjoyed that. I mean I like to sit around and cut up and y' all know me, you know that. But I like some of this information too and it was good. Hope to see you in Huntsville in the end of August. Don't work Fridays anymore but I may have to make a special trip and grab a few things over at Giga Parts. Patrick Campbell. Patrick, I hope so. I hope you'll come see me. Patrick works for NASA and does an incredible job with Air Communication Systems. So and I'm A little jealous that I never got to work with Patrick. I'll be honest with you, because I love what they do. This comes from. Well, I'm going to. I'm going to hold the name of this just because of the topic. Flock cameras. Bubba, I was surprised that you were not up on flock cameras and that law enforcement are using them. You guys were talking about them perhaps being misused by authorities. I wanted to let you know that recently in St. Clair county, two police officers lost their jobs. One of the officers worked for Springville police, the other for Moody. And apparently they were using to these cameras to spy on individuals. You may already know, but several police departments in the state have equipped cars with tag readers on them that searches the criminal database. And I also understand that some of the new cars that they have have dash cams mounted in them for safety reasons. They're also scanning tags in real time. Keep up the good work and enjoy listening. And this comes from an old friend and we'll just say Kyle. How about that? I won't give his whole name. I don't want to out him to law enforcement. Kyle, you know, Say this delicately as I can. We have tags on our cars so they can identify us. And the fact that they're doing that to identify us, I'm not shocked by that. I mean, that's why we have a tag on there. When we allowed the government to tag our vehicles, we basically gave them permission to follow us. And honestly, some people need. Law enforcement need to be checking out. They're in the news every day committing crime. I'm kind of. And I don't want to. I don't want to sell out to my privacy friends because I understand that and I'm with you, okay? But really, I'm. I'm kind of from the school. If you ain't up to nothing, why you worried about it? You know? But I understand. I saw Snowden, I got it. Anything. And look, I was a big proponent of the Patriot act when it came out, but we've seen how it can be abused. Long as people are involved, we're going to have abuse. Go have it. Go have abuse. Got to have it. It's just going to have it. The best abuse ever. You know, it's. It's going to happen and, and it shouldn't happen and you got to have oversight into that and you can have things to try to limit it. But trust me, friends, as long as people are involved, it's going to be a flawed system. Trust me. It's just like democracy by far and away the best gig going, okay, Free enterprise, open markets, capitalism, by far not even close. Second place is not even close. But there will be abuse. You got to know that people are involved. So what do you do? You have to try to limit that best you can. This one is subject space travel comes from Chris Sykes. Bubba, what do you think will be the biggest obstacle we have to overcome for deep space travel? Do you think it will be the advancement of technology for deep space travel or the effect that prolonged space travel has on the human body? Mostly bone and muscle loss or radiation exposure. Love the podcast. Keep it up, Chris. You, you hit all the high points there. The problem with space is you do have radiation. We can shield for that for the most part. If you look at the astronauts that went to the moon, they were some of our healthiest people. They were screened, they were in the prime of life. They went to the moon and most of them have lived very long, normal lives. I mean, we're losing more and more each day just because of the time. And you know, a couple of them have had various issues, one thing and another, but I think we can, we can shield for the radiation. I mean, it's long term. You're going to have that bone and muscle loss. You're going to have to exercise, you're going to have to have weight bearing things you do in space and you can do that through hydraulics. You don't necessarily have to have something heavy, but it is a problem and it's going to be a problem. I think the biggest problem is the lifespan of a human. I mean, we're going to eventually, I mean, we're going back to the moon. I just saw Chris Isaacson, head of NASA on TV this morning. We're going back to the moon. We're going to build bases and then we're eventually going to go to Mars. But beyond that, the lifetime of a human is going to be the, the holdback in this because of the vast distances that we're talking about. Unless we're able to develop serious warp drive engines and get out in front of the speed of light, it's going to be a, going to be a long haul. So and some of that is possible, theoretically, it's possible. We just haven't been able to do it yet. Here's the thing, good first step. We should have been back to the moon a long time ago. Let's get back to the moon. Let's put us a few canisters down there and at the south pole and time together and make us a moon base and let's go from there. I just think the human spirit, we have to. We have to travel, we have to investigate, we have to explore. We saw that in this country as we moved west. We've seen that in space. We have had the International Space Station up there for what, how many years, how many decades now we can do this, but it's going to require special people who want to make that commitment. And if they want to make that commitment, I'm all for it. I've heard some people say, well, we can't, you know, we can't let somebody go and go to Mars and never come back. Well, why not? If they want to do it, let them do it. And I think that's great. I think we have to become, and I agree with Elon in just a practical sense that we have to become a space traveling civilization if we're going to, you know, make it long term. Now, I don't see that in conflict with the Bible. Don't start with that, okay? I'm just talking very practical, very human, very earthly, very physical terms. But warp drives are possible. Somebody asked me to explain a warp drive to him the other day. I may do that on one of the shows. You basically are bending the space time continuum in front, right in front of the ship so it can go faster than the speed of light. Great idea, by the way. First seen in sci fi, but. But the science of it. It looks like it might be workable, but we'll have to. We'll have to see. All right, finally here in the email stack. And this is cool. Hey, bubba. Well, it's usually because you're taping things and all that when I'm out either grocery shopping, doing pickleball, you know, Bible study, whatever I do, you know, trying to vacuum in the basement, you know, you just miss me.

[Bubba]

We've. The last few times we've talked a little bit about your schedule on some other shows that I've done.

[Betty Lou]

Oh, I know. I've heard y' all dogging me.

[Bubba]

I'm not dogging you. But you. You have two. Two dogs. And you play with them quite a bit. Fur babies, as you call them.

Yes. And now it's laid Back ladies and friends. Sometimes. Yeah. People's husbands will come every now and then.

And then you. You play with the Ridge Ballers.

Now the Point. Well, the Montgomery group yesterday, and we'll probably play again sometime. And then, you know, the Willow Point group, you know, they're fine.

You also take part in a pickleball clinic where you.

Oh, now we just started that. Yeah.

Now tell us a little bit about it.

It's fun. I mean, you know, we got Mr. Laws, Mr. Jim. He's a gentleman that comes over here from another part of the lake and helps us out. And we just started that. But we had a good turnout. We had, you know, a couple of courts and.

And then you got a pro also, at the will of Point.

[Betty Lou]

Yeah. Joe.

Sorry, Buck, to bring that up. I think you know best. I remember Buck was most famous for giving Shanah Twain tennis lessons at the.

Hey, y' all would. Yes, that is true. So you have your pickleball groups that we've just talked about, and there's about four or five things you named. Then you have Bible study.

[Betty Lou]

Yeah. And it'll start back up after Labor Day. We, you know, took a break for summer yoga. I don't have not gotten involved with yoga.

[Bubba]

But you have some kind of workout.

[Betty Lou]

It's like a. Oh, tabata. Yeah.

[Bubba]

I thought that was the forbidden dance.

[Betty Lou]

No, we've talked about that on here, too. That is the lum lambada or something. I don't know. Some Spanish, I don't know. But it's not. No, it is not forbidden. Trust me. Yeah, at our age, we don't do much that's forbidden. That's for sure. Even if we used to.

[Bubba]

If we wanted to do something forbidden.

[Betty Lou]

Yeah.

[Bubba]

I don't know that we could.

[Betty Lou]

Yeah. Hide your leg up enough.

[Bubba]

So you have that now. Are you. Are you in the mahjong?

[Betty Lou]

No, I really got into that. I watched it being played twice and I got tired of sitting still that just watching it. So I don't know if I could sit there and think, you know what

[Bubba]

was funny about that? We thought that was something new.

[Betty Lou]

Oh, I know.

[Bubba]

We've been watching Seinfeld again and George's mom plays it.

[Betty Lou]

Yeah.

[Bubba]

And when that was on was a long time ago.

[Betty Lou]

Right.

[Bubba]

So it had to be in New York then. Yeah, but I mean, I did. I'd never heard the word Majan. I hadn't either until a few months ago.

[Betty Lou]

Two years ago maybe is when I started hearing about it.

[Bubba]

So what else? And then you. You volunteer.

[Betty Lou]

Oh, yeah. I do respite care now.

[Bubba]

Tell everybody what that means exactly.

[Betty Lou]

It's. Respite care is a organization I guess they started for people that have family that are Alzheimer's, dementia, whatever. And the caregivers need a break.

[Bubba]

Yeah. Caregivers.

[Betty Lou]

Yeah.

[Hunter]

So.

[Betty Lou]

So we have several friends that come on Tuesdays and Thursday.

[Bubba]

Don't eat it up too much and get you to buy just a little.

[Betty Lou]

I didn't know if you were having a mini stroke or you were telling me to do something with my head. I didn't.

[Bubba]

Well, you're petting the dog. You're all over the place. That's perfect. You just stay right there.

[Betty Lou]

Okay. Yeah. So anyway, it meets at one of the churches in town and Alexander City, and it's fun. So anyway, it kind of. I used to do home health for years, you know, years ago. That was in my former life. As a nurse.

[Bubba]

Yes. Yeah.

[Betty Lou]

And so I enjoy it.

[Bubba]

So you also do Children's Harbor?

Some.

Some. Yeah. I hadn't done that this summer as much. Just. I don't know, you know.

So, yeah, we've been putting it up with each other for 37 years.

I actually met you in 1982.

When I was a senior in high school.

[Betty Lou]

Right. Yeah. And I was.

We probably don't need to cover all of that. We'll just say I was a senior

[Betty Lou]

in high school and I. And I was in high school. Yeah. I'll say that. Barely straight out of junior high. Oh, me.

[Bubba]

You had. You had to let our daughter know that. So just some funny things. I think the fact that we have survived that long is.

[Betty Lou]

Survived.

[Bubba]

It's really. We've become a statistical. Something you don't see much anymore.

[Betty Lou]

Yeah. Yeah, we have. It's sad that so many marriages don't make it. You know what I mean? And I don't know what the statistics are as far as how many years they make it, but I know It's. It's over 50% in it now end in divorce. Yeah.

[Bubba]

Well, I can tell you 100% of marriages end in divorce or death. One or the other.

[Betty Lou]

Yeah. Yeah. It's either divorce or death.

[Bice Motors Announcer]

Yeah.

[Betty Lou]

That's where we're headed here. So that's how it stacks up. That.

That's a lot of fun to think about.

What do you people always ask me, and you know, anybody who's done anything a long time, they'll say, well, what is the secret to your success? That's something you always hear. What do you think is the secret to our longevity. And, you know, it's. There's days that, you know, you probably wonder, will it continue? But what. What would you answer? How would you answer it?

[Betty Lou]

Well, I would say, number one, it's me, you, and God, you know, so we're all in this together because I made a vow. Not only do you. You need to stop. I'm not eating the microphone. Good grief.

[Bubba]

Well, you get to playing with a dog and you forget, and then you just keep going closer. And I'm trying to get you to back out of it a little bit. And I'm trying out.

[Betty Lou]

I'm back. Back it up, Terry. Backing it up.

[Bubba]

You're good now.

[Betty Lou]

All right. So I made a vow to you.

[Bubba]

Yes.

[Betty Lou]

And I also made a vow to God that I would love you best I could through sickness and health. And you've put me to the test without the last 10 years or.

[Bubba]

Sorry about that.

[Betty Lou]

But anyway, no. And I think just trying to have patience with each other, that is a big thing with any relationship with your kids, with your spouse, with friendships sometime, you know, do you.

[Bubba]

You said something to me the other day that. Because I don't. I don't travel as much as I did with my other job, that, wow, I'm here a lot.

[Betty Lou]

And that's where the patience comes in.

[Bubba]

But it is. It is strange, I guess, when you're used to your spouse being gone with work a lot during the day, if they work, you know, full time or even part time, that they're out of the house quite a bit. And then if you're. If you have a home office or you work remotely, hey, you're here a whole lot more.

[Betty Lou]

It's a transition. It's different phases of life, you know, because you were gone so much when the kids were little, you know, different things going on, you know, radio and all this. And then you were gone. You know, you got up early and we're out of the house before we got up and getting to school and all that good stuff.

[Bubba]

Occasionally take a nap in the afternoon.

[Betty Lou]

Oh, you still take a nap in the afternoon and you don't have to. I don't know. But anyway, I guess it's just habit.

[Announcer]

Yeah.

[Bubba]

Old habits. Hard to break.

[Betty Lou]

Yeah. And you're sitting over here in a sweater like we're in a Siberia or something.

[Bubba]

There's frost on the windows.

[Betty Lou]

No, there's no.

[Bubba]

You know, this. I think this is probably one of the biggest contention points we have in our marriage, is a thermostat.

[Betty Lou]

Yeah. You apparently you need to go live on the porch. I guess that would solve it.

[Bubba]

Well, I do. I stay on the porch most of the time just to keep from arguing about the temperature in here.

[Betty Lou]

You need to either be on the porch or on the boat somewhere out in the sunshine.

[Bubba]

Benny likes to be cold.

[Betty Lou]

Well, I don't like it. I don't like it cold, cold, but I don't like it hot in here because that's another phase of my life, apparently, is the hormonal phase, you know, and I'm sure a lot of the listeners can.

[Bubba]

You're sweating right now.

[Betty Lou]

I am? Yeah. I got sweat coming down my back.

[Bubba]

Okay, so you're sweating. Okay. You're sweating. I'm in a sweater.

[Betty Lou]

Yeah. I've got shorts and a short sleeve shirt on and flip flops and I'm sweating. And you're over there. Look like grandma with her coat on in the house. Oh my gosh. Yeah.

[Bubba]

So thinking back over the years, high points, low points, anything you want to share?

[Betty Lou]

Well, I was talking about our honeymoon yesterday. We were talking about people that don't fly, that don't want to fly on an airplane or whatever. The first time I flew, I was telling them that was our honeymoon and we went to the Cayman Islands. That was a lot of fun. It really was. That was a good trip. So anyway, nevermind. It was our honeymoon. It was a good trip though, you

[Bubba]

know, lot of firsts for you there. We laughed. You never flying before our honeymoon. And we had to fly to Memphis to catch a plane to go to the Caymans. It was like the episode of the Beverly Hill.

[Betty Lou]

That's what I said yesterday. Yeah. When Granny goes, if this thing gets to go any faster, we're going to

[Bubba]

fly, we're going to leave the ground.

[Betty Lou]

Leave the ground.

[Bubba]

And Jed says, don't look now.

[Betty Lou]

Oh. Oh my. That was funny.

[Bubba]

You know, I think to me the low point was when my mother had to show up to pay the power bill twice.

[Betty Lou]

Yeah, I think that was not fun. Yeah, that was not fun.

[Bubba]

And that was in the early days and I was working partners in a radio station and I didn't get paid every week. We were struggling and so we were. Betty was making most of the money at the time and. But it was still, you know, you were still struggling to, you know, paycheck to paycheck and trying to get. And that's. That's a terrible way to live, by the way.

[Betty Lou]

Yeah, it just would recommend it.

[Bubba]

Yeah, it wears on.

[Betty Lou]

You wouldn't recommend it for a strong Marriage either.

[Bubba]

Yeah. So twice the power company is literally in our driveway. Go pull the meter.

[Betty Lou]

Oh yeah.

[Bubba]

And my mom has to drive up and pay us. And for the.

[Betty Lou]

Thank goodness for your mom.

[Bubba]

You know, being. Being a Christian man and husband, you know, I believe the husband should provide for the wife and that. That was the low point. That was the low point.

[Betty Lou]

Yeah.

[Bubba]

And I thought, something's got to give here. You know, we can't keep this. This up. And that's where we learned a very important lesson about tithing because we had not done that regularly and it. I was really convicted about it. And we started doing that and our finances got better.

[Betty Lou]

Yeah.

[Bubba]

And I'm not saying that that's a get rich quick scheme, but I think you have to take God at his word and his promises and he says if you will do that, he'll open up the windows of heaven. And we've been blessed ever since.

[Betty Lou]

Yeah, we really have.

[Bubba]

And. But boy, that was a dark day. Golly. Well, between the power company threatening to pull meters at the house and at the radio station, that was always my favorite. That was my favorite day.

[Betty Lou]

We had about, I don't know, six, seven years. It was pretty rough there. Right out of the gate.

[Bubba]

It was. We were scratching trying to. And this is what was funny too, because we lived in Jacksonville and because of the university and the demand on living condition living places there, the college students kept the prices way high.

[Betty Lou]

Right.

[Bubba]

I mean, I remember very clearly when we got married to rent an apartment was about $600. We actually bought a house and it was a little starter house, 1200 square foot. Our little cracker box palace. And we bought it from the builder who. Owner financed it at 10%. We were tickled to death to have that rate because we just come out of the Jimmy Carter years. You know, that was at 21. And our payment was 325amonth for the house. And my mom gave us a little down payment, like 5,000 for the house. I think it was 45. But you can't buy a car for that now.

[Betty Lou]

I know. Isn't that crazy?

[Bubba]

But it was. It was a new house and it was very. Oh yeah, very nice for us.

[Betty Lou]

It was. It was real cute. It was like a little. Not a cottage, but kind of, you know. I mean, it was very cute. I had a front porch. Didn't have a garage or anything. You know, we just park outside. But anyway.

[Bubba]

Yeah, we had all the dogs and cats you could.

[Betty Lou]

Oh yeah, it's all a lot of cats.

[Bubba]

Were there eight or nine years.

[Betty Lou]

We were there in eight. Eight years, I think maybe nine.

[Bubba]

Through a lot of things. And went through The Blizzard of 93.

[Betty Lou]

Yeah.

[Bubba]

Opal. Before that, the hurricane. It was exciting, but it was a great place. And we got our footing under us and actually upped our payment schedule so we could pay it off quicker to 375amonth. Can you believe that?

[Betty Lou]

Well, we were so used to living on one check, I think. Didn't we just continue to live off my check and put yours in savings so we could save up to build a house?

[Bubba]

And then we. We. We purchased a couple of lots over at Stony Brook, and the owner. And I won't. I'd like to give him credit for doing it, but I don't want to get him in trouble. Other people want to, but there was a guy that owned a couple of lots at Stony Brook, and he. He sold them to his owner. Financed. And it's so funny, because the price was like $11,000 a lot.

[Betty Lou]

Yeah.

[Bubba]

Isn't that funny?

[Betty Lou]

Yeah.

[Bubba]

And now look at the lot prices around.

[Betty Lou]

Oh, my gosh. Yeah. We couldn't even buy a lot around here. Now. I don't think we wouldn't be living here if we didn't already live here.

[Bubba]

If we didn't get in when we did.

[Betty Lou]

Right.

[Bubba]

We would. We'd never been so.

[Betty Lou]

Yep.

[Bubba]

But he owner financed that for us, and we ended up building a house at Stony Brook, which I love very much and thought we would be there.

Oh, yeah.

And that would be my final stop because I hated moving.

[Betty Lou]

Right.

Little did I know.

[Betty Lou]

And we were only ahead of us about a year. A little over a year. When. And then.

After all that work, we. We built most of it ourselves.

[Betty Lou]

We painted the whole thing just about. Except for the help of school clothes and Tony. Well, yeah, the help of our friends. They helped us a lot. And then there was that red dining room that we never could get honed in on the red.

We ended up calling Donny Adams from Oxford Choice.

[Betty Lou]

Painting choice. Yeah.

[Bubba]

To help us finish. But we did. You could do your own stuff. You just couldn't be a contractor for somebody else. But we did the wiring, and your dad helped with the plumbing and.

[Betty Lou]

Yeah, we had.

[Bubba]

We actually got one of your old boyfriends to build the house.

[Betty Lou]

Oh, that was just, you know, junior high. Whatever.

[Bubba]

Look, we had to call in all the favors. Okay. And then we had another one do the Sheetrock.

[Betty Lou]

Oh, goodness.

[Bubba]

I told Betty. I said, can you call them and get a deal for us? And don't. Don't carry.

[Betty Lou]

I don't know that I got a deal.

[Bubba]

I said, don't carry it too far, but don't do what you can do, you know?

[Betty Lou]

Oh, man, that's funny. Yep.

[Bubba]

It was. Anything to get the job done.

[Betty Lou]

Yeah, it was. Yeah. We worked hard on that house, though. I remember we couldn't do that now.

[Bubba]

No, I don't.

[Betty Lou]

Young. We'd come in from work and then work there till midnight. Just about get up and do the same thing, you know? So. Anyway. But we made it.

[Bubba]

[Betty Lou]

Yep.

[Bubba]

We're here today. We're still standing.

[Betty Lou]

Right. So we built.

[Bubba]

There's days that, you know, it's a little shaky, but we. But you. You've been a. You've been a champ, Betty. I appreciate you. I really do.

Well, I've tried. You've been a champ, too, for the most.

Well, I don't. I don't feel like I'm a very good husband. I really don't.

[Betty Lou]

Well, after 37 years, then. Let's do something else.

Well, I know we did read that article on great divorce, but. Yeah. I just. Sometimes I feel like I don't do a very good job, you know?

[Betty Lou]

Oh, I really don't know. I don't.

Yeah. I just. I mean, I'm not. As you said, I'm not very domesticated.

[Betty Lou]

Domesticated?

[Bubba]

I don't. I don't do. I don't. I don't do things around the house very well.

Whatever attracted you to the person originally, you know, has to.

Yeah. Well, I mean, you know, when we first met, you were younger. We were both like teenagers, and I didn't really get it, but when I got to know you, right. You were fun to be around, funny, you know? Yeah.

Your legs. Oh, you were a little hot cheerleader.

Well, one of them's 47, 48 years. Yeah. They're still out playing pickleball together.

Got a slew of grandkids. Yeah, we're slow to the court on that. I don't know about Hunter and Caitlin and all that, but you never know

if you ever seen my imitation of me going to see my grandkids.

No, I know. Well, I need to probably get on the treadmill more than I do or something to make sure I'm around for all that.

Well, I just keep sticking metal in places that ain't working, so, you know.

Yeah. How's your knee doing?

It's good. It's good. The artificial knee is. Is my good knee now my real knee is the bad knee.

Yeah, you may need a shot in that or something to kind of get you through, but something. I think I walked you too much on that trip. We went out west. You had a lot of walking do.

I did, and I did pretty good for the first six days. Then I seemed. It caught up with me a little bit.

Well, we are back and we're about to wrap up episode 68. I did want to tell you about something though many of you and we got a lot of great feedback on Joe Scott Morgan, the host of Body Bags and we've had him on twice. We get great response. I mean he's a rock star when it comes to true crime and he had talked about the forensic program, forensic science program to have at Jacksonville State University where he's over all that. And I had mentioned to him on the podcast I wanted to get a tour. Well, we actually got to go this week and get a tour. That and Joseph Scott Morgan is so kind to take time to do that. But I've got to tell you about it because I was blown away. I had no idea all the things they had at their disposal there that they are teaching these students that are going into this to be medical examiners. And first off, I will. There's some things I can't talk about. I will tell you. We saw the morgue. We saw the freezer. We saw the clam shells where bodies are kept. And they have a camera system in there so they can project to a classroom that's also next door. We saw the crime scene house, which is various rooms, kitchen, den, bathroom, washroom, bedroom, an office, you name it, where they can recreate a crime scene. And they have fake blood splatters. They have all this they can do. They can go in and set up a crime scene, and then the students have to come in and evaluate it and tell what happened based on the clues. I mean, it's really. It's just. I mean, I guess I knew that. That somebody did this somewhere, but I didn't realize it was going on at Jacksonville State. It is awesome. We saw the blood testing room. We saw the fingerprinting room where they can gather fingerprints off of objects. They have equipment to do that. We saw the. Let's see. I can't talk about that one. Let me just say they have electronic gathering technology. Can I just leave it at that? I don't think I'm supposed to tell you all about that. It may be classified, but they have the ability to gather electronic evidence. I'm just going to leave it at that. We saw interrogation room. We saw a holding room. We saw all the way to a courtroom. They have a full courtroom there where the judge can sit, where, you know, the jury sits, where, you know, people can watch the trial. And as a matter of fact, if I understood him correct, they're actually going to have some real trials there. They're going to be using that courtroom so the students can watch some of the trials. But what they do is they do training there about testifying about how you present evidence and how you secure. You know, you go all the way from securing the evidence to doing autopsy to, I mean, every step of the way. I mean, from booking somebody to, you know, going all the way to the courtroom. And it was very, very interesting. I told him I was not a good student. Okay. I didn't. I didn't particularly care for classrooms, but seeing all this makes me want to go back and audit a class. I mean, it was so interesting. So I appreciate Joseph Scott Morgan for doing that and showing us, giving us the tour. And I don't. I don't know how open those are to the public. I guess you could. Could find out, but I'm amazed that they are doing that at Jacksonville State. I mean, obviously if you're going to have medical examiners, you got to train them, right? But to see all of that firsthand was just so interesting. As a matter of fact, I got a keeper blood splatter that I'm getting to keep here at the house. So, you know, just so we can throw that around for fun. So, anyway, I appreciate him again. He has a great podcast called Body Bags and is voted by True Crime folks is one of the top podcasts in several categories. So check that out if you get a chance. We'll have him back on again. He was very busy doing interviews on a story that hit the national wire this week, so. But he took time to do that. And he also talked about how much he loves being on this podcast and how he loves the response he gets from all of you guys. So we appreciate you doing that.
