Host
Well, welcome back. And we have got a very special guest here in the Melayella Studio today. It is a lady that I owe a debt of gratitude that I don't know how I can ever pay you. The former Sue Green, now Sue Marshall. She is the lady that introduced me to Betty Lou Busse. Sue, how are you?
Sue Marshall
I'm doing great, Bill. How are you?
Host
You know, we've wanted to talk to you about this for a long time, and we'll get into that. Let's bring in my better half. Betty, how are you?
Sue Marshall
Great.
Betty Lou Busse
How are you?
Host
Can you believe we finally. We finally got Sue.
Betty Lou Busse
We finally made this happen.
Host
You know, so many times, sue, we've. Over the years, we would be having a special moment, you know, just staring into each other's eyes and.
Betty Lou Busse
Oh, yes, we do that so often.
Host
Or the sunset. And I said, you know, we need to thank sue for this moment, because she is responsible for this.
Sue Marshall
Well, we appreciate. I appreciate it.
Host
You did good. I did.
Betty Lou Busse
I think I did. Way back in 1983 or 82. 82, yeah, that's right.
Host
It was a cold winter night in 1982 as we traveled to Pleasant Valley.
Betty Lou Busse
For a basketball game, and here I was.
Host
So the setup for this is that Betty and Sue went to Pleasant Valley, and it was a smaller country school that just had opened up at the time. Yeah, county school out in the county. And me and your current boyfriend at that time went to the city school, which was Jacksonville High School. And, man, I mean, I remember that night because he was just bugging me to death to go to the basketball game. And, you know, we both had basketball. Basketball is big at both schools, and y' all. But y' all were a smaller school, so, you know, we didn't play each other directly, but y' all played and we played, and it was usually on different nights. So, you know, if you're a high school kid, any reason to go out? Well, Stephen had called me, and he was just wearing me out, and he. And I thought, you know, I really didn't want to go, and I don't know what to do. I said, okay, I'll go. I'll go. So we go and we see you, and we're having a good time, and, you know, we're always cutting up, and we're gonna go. We're gonna have a good time. And. And I remember you saying, I need to get you a girlfriend out here.
Sue Marshall
Yeah, well, he actually told me we need to fix him up with one of your friends, you know, so.
Host
So I. I never knew Was it you plotting that, or was it him plotting?
Sue Marshall
It was him, actually. Yeah. He was like, we need to. We need to find him a girlfriend. And which one of your friends would be perfect?
Host
Because I think you had a choice. He.
Sue Marshall
He knew you made a choice. Yeah, he.
Host
He. I think he knew that if I had a girlfriend or. I thought all along you were the one thinking this, that I would be out there more often, thus he would be out there more often. That was the kind of. The scheme of the whole thing, right.
Betty Lou Busse
Yeah, that was actually his idea. He would see you more if he had a buddy, and.
Sue Marshall
Yeah. Yeah.
Host
So you. And we'll just. You know, we'll just walk through this story as it happened. I remember you telling me, we got to get you a woman out here. And you said, just pick one out. Pick any one out. Any one out, and I'll fix you up.
Betty Lou Busse
All right?
Host
And I thought, well, you know, I kind of got it going on. And so, you know the white painter's pants. Yeah. Oh, yeah, absolutely. Probably overalls or something, you know, and do you remember telling me that? Just pick anybody out?
Sue Marshall
Yeah.
Betty Lou Busse
Oh, my gosh.
Host
And. And I picked out somebody and you said they were unavailable.
Sue Marshall
That's right. Yeah. Choose again. Gotta choose again.
Betty Lou Busse
You heard that right, folks. I was not first choice, but here I am.
Sue Marshall
Okay, look, who won.
Host
And you. You even went into. I think, because you were afraid it hurt my feelings or a little bit that you said, oh, well, you know, she's had a boyfriend since kindergarten. I mean, this is a long. I mean, any. Anything. Anybody else, we could work that out, you know, But I mean, it's. It's just been long term. And. And I was looking around, you know, trying to see, and we were looking at the cheerleaders down there because we were up top. And I said, what about that bouncy blonde down there on the end? It's walking on her tiptoe. She was cute.
Sue Marshall
Yeah, yeah.
Host
And I could tell she had a lot of energy.
Sue Marshall
I was like, oh, yeah, yeah, that's Betty.
Host
See, the dogs even agree.
Betty Lou Busse
Oh, yeah. They said, yeah, I'm talking about my mama.
Host
And. And you said, I can make that happen.
Sue Marshall
Yeah.
Host
So what did you do then?
Sue Marshall
So I just asked Betty and I. And Betty at the time couldn't date.
Betty Lou Busse
Yeah.
Sue Marshall
Should I say that?
Betty Lou Busse
Yeah, well, you know, my mom knows now.
Sue Marshall
Yeah, yeah, yeah. You know, Sorry. But yeah. So I was like, well, to say.
Betty Lou Busse
Sorry, Mom a lot.
Host
If she survived last week, she'll make it through anything.
Sue Marshall
She could. She could spend the night with me, and we'll double date, and my mom will cover.
Betty Lou Busse
Oh, gosh.
Host
Well, I thought we were just visiting a movie.
Betty Lou Busse
Yeah, it was very. Yeah. Innocent fun.
Sue Marshall
Yeah.
Betty Lou Busse
You know, high school.
Sue Marshall
That's right. Just met.
Host
So you Was it. I forgot what the next event was. It. Was it a beauty pageant that I came to shoot pictures for somebody.
Betty Lou Busse
You came and took pictures, and I don't know if you were there or.
Sue Marshall
I was in the beauty pageant already.
Betty Lou Busse
Okay.
Host
I already knew that Betty was the chosen one and that we were going to try to work this out, but for some reason, I went and had an eye exam that day, and I had my eyes dilated, which I. You know, you look strange anyway when you do that, and I think that's the first time I met you.
Betty Lou Busse
Well, yeah, just. We didn't really meet that night at the ball game. Just maybe in passing.
Sue Marshall
Yeah. Just kind of.
Host
Yeah. Sue sold you off. That was it, basically.
Betty Lou Busse
So we did talk for a minute at the.
Host
Yes.
Betty Lou Busse
At the pageant. You took some pictures and all that. So that picture's around here somewhere. I don't know.
Host
And you did. You did. You think I look weird with my eyes dilated?
Betty Lou Busse
Could you tell thinking, what weirdo comes to take pictures that just had his eyes dilated? You know what I mean? I thought, how focused can you be? Yeah. How can you get your picture focus? So I don't know, but I thought, well, I guess I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.
Host
And we've. We've told the story about us dating on the radio before and probably need to retell that just for the podcast audience. But we. We hung out some and went to a few places, and then we had an athletic banquet that you invited me to.
Betty Lou Busse
You went to that?
Host
I'm sorry, I went to that.
Betty Lou Busse
It was the. The great lip. Lip. I can't say lip sync after party.
Host
That's easy for you to say. Yeah.
Betty Lou Busse
That you missed.
Host
I did. I slept right through it. I slept right through it. And. But. And there's no excuse, but I did have a reason, and I had to cut. Saturday was cutting grass. Here we go.
Betty Lou Busse
Striking the violins.
Host
Listen, we didn't have a riding mower. I mean, it was this. This is one of those stories. This is. So I had to cut our grass with a push more. We had a huge yard. We had all. It was on a hill. We had a big ditch wonder. I still have toes. Honestly, as much as I slipped on that heel. And I used to cut with flip flops on, you know, Brilliant. So we also had to cut other yards in the neighborhood. You know, my dad made me cut up some other people's yards too. You know, the widows, we had to take care of them. And so I would break at lunch and then go back with a weed eater and do the afternoon. Then I would usually chill for a few minutes and get a shower, go out, do whatever we're doing. And when I. When I had my cool down, I fell asleep. And when I woke up, it was about 10 o' clock at night and Betty had already called to chew me.
Sue Marshall
Out and curfew was 11, so. Yeah, you blew it.
Host
It was a done day.
Betty Lou Busse
Curfew. Yeah, I abided by that.
Host
Yeah. Yeah. Well, mine was too, because Bodie bus, he didn't play no games. I remember telling him that I needed more time because things, you know, I didn't have enough time when I go out.
Sue Marshall
He said, too many chores.
Host
He said, start earlier. He said, you leave at three in the afternoon. I don't care. I said, yeah, but nobody else is. There's nobody out there. So anyway, Betty got mad. We didn't talk for a long time and we ran into each other a couple of times.
Betty Lou Busse
Yeah, you did. And bless your heart, you chose a firm for some reason back in the 80s.
Host
She always brings that up. Always. I'd like for this to be a sweet story, you know.
Betty Lou Busse
You know, curly hair.
Sue Marshall
Yeah.
Betty Lou Busse
Betty's like, what, dodge that? No.
Host
So. And I. I saw you at the blood drive where you passed out. Yeah, that and I. I caught you and kept you from. From hitting your head on the ground.
Betty Lou Busse
You did. That was very nice. Thank you.
Host
You're welcome. I really did it because I wanted your cooking. You weren't.
Betty Lou Busse
I know. I know you did.
Host
And I saw you at two or three events at college.
Betty Lou Busse
Yeah, I remember seeing the parking lot going into the Stone Center. Whatever. Yeah, whatever. History.
Host
And then we. You actually dated a friend of mine for a while and I saw you coming over to their house in high school. Well, I'm just talking about in general, the whole, whole deal in between. And then we. We. I ran into you at a remote at movie gallery, right Back when people rented movies. Now, some of you have no idea what that is now, but that was a big thing on Friday. Get your arm full of movies for.
Sue Marshall
The weekend all the time.
Host
And you had to be. You had to be kind. And rewind.
Sue Marshall
Yeah, exactly.
Host
So after that, that evening. Pretty funny. Betty was engaged at the time and.
Betty Lou Busse
You don't have to go into that again.
Host
And What. What do you. You want to wrap up here all day? Oh, you want to focus on Sue's part? Okay, well, we. We probably need to finish that whole story at some point. But you. You handed me a phone number, and I tried to call you. I thought mixed messages here, because I just saw she's wearing engagement ring, you know, but look, engaged is not married. Let's be clear.
Sue Marshall
Okay, sure.
Host
And she gave me a number, and I tried to call it, and it was the wrong number. It's some old lady. And she was very tired of me calling, asking for Betty. I mean, she was getting mad at one point, so I thought, well, Betty is still mad about that high school thing. I. Still mad about it. I cannot believe it.
Sue Marshall
She gave me the wrong number on purpose.
Host
That's what I thought. That's what I thought.
Betty Lou Busse
I really didn't.
Host
So it was about. I think it was about. I think it was about Friday. The week after that, she calls me and says, why haven't you called? And I said, I tried, but it was the wrong number, and some old lady's really tired of me trying. She said, that's not the wrong number. And I read it back to her because I still had it on my desk. She said, that ain't my number. I said, I know, I know. And she said, why don't we go see a movie again?
Betty Lou Busse
I love the confidence that I had to just call and say, why didn't you call? I knew he would.
Host
I mean.
Sue Marshall
What'S the dealing? An old woman.
Betty Lou Busse
That's right.
Host
So we. We went out, and you. You want to pick up there that you were in the process of breaking that engagement off?
Betty Lou Busse
What do you want me to say about it?
Host
Well, I mean, do you just want to repeat that?
Betty Lou Busse
I mean, I will.
Host
So they could hear it from you.
Betty Lou Busse
I was. I was in the process of trying to part ways or whatever, and, you know, sometimes when somebody lives out of town and they go back home for spring break, you know what I mean? And they didn't take no for an answer. You're, like, in limbo over here. I'm like, well, I'm not really engaged in my mind. You know what I mean? But I guess they kind of think they are. So anyway, it was unfortunate chain of events.
Host
The timing was a little off. Yeah, but.
Betty Lou Busse
Yeah, but, you know, it all's well that ends well, you know what I mean? They're happy, I'm happy.
Host
So we.
Sue Marshall
That's all that matter.
Host
We. We went out and I told Betty at the end of the first date, I said, I'm gonna marry you. Because she was so much fun.
Betty Lou Busse
Oh, yeah. That kind of weirded me out, though, because I'm like, now what psychic stuff is he doing? Pulling on me, you know? So.
Host
So guys don't. That. That's one thing. They can be spooked. Probably. Probably jump the gun there a little bit. But we had such a good time. It was so much fun.
Betty Lou Busse
Yeah.
Host
We laughed and cut up just like we do now.
Sue Marshall
She was always a lot of fun.
Host
Yes.
Sue Marshall
Yeah.
Host
And then party. Yeah.
Sue Marshall
Always laughing, always moving. 90 to nothing.
Host
Always happy, you know? So I thought, wow, I could use that in my life.
Sue Marshall
And everyone can use that in their life.
Host
We dated for a while, and I think you thought we were getting too serious at that point, right? Too quick.
Betty Lou Busse
Because let's face it, I'd just been engaged.
Sue Marshall
Engaged again.
Host
A week later, she's collecting rings. You know, like you do if you go through the drive through, and I give the little. Oh, I got all. I got the whole set.
Betty Lou Busse
I got all those Arby's glasses.
Host
And you.
Betty Lou Busse
I had a lot of beef and cheddar.
Host
What was it you told me? You said, you think we need to.
Betty Lou Busse
Break up for a minute? I said, let's just pump the brakes for a minute. You know what I mean?
Host
And I think you said, break up.
Betty Lou Busse
Yeah, well, whatever I meant, not break up, but just kind of slow things down here. Going nuts all of a sudden, you know, and you go, what is it takes two to go?
Host
Well, I think it was, you know, break up.
Betty Lou Busse
I don't want to break up.
Host
So we're. We're all, you know, what we are is a series of choices we make in life, you know, and they're ab. And sometimes C is not an option. You have to pick an A or a B. And then you look back and you go, wow, this is a whole series. This is how I ended up here. Well, I, you know, I was kind of put on the spot. I was caught a little off guard because I thought she was having a good time, too. And I think it was probably one of my greatest moments. I said, betty, it takes two to go together. Which is. That's what we used to call it, you know, it takes two to break up. I don't want to break up. I'll see you tomorrow night.
Sue Marshall
There you go.
Host
She looked at me and tilted her head. You know, kind of like how a Irish setter will do when they don't understand.
Betty Lou Busse
Comparing me to the Irish setter in the world.
Host
Of course, the Next night, we went out and we. We kept dating and eventually got engaged after Betty was pressuring me. Then she was foot on the gas.
Betty Lou Busse
That's a whole new story. Yeah. I was in nursing school, and I was either going to stay in the Jacksonville area and do nursing or move, you know, Birmingham, wherever. And that's paid a little better for nurses. And a lot of the people I was graduating with were doing that. So I'm like, well, I guess I. I got to know what the deal is here. Am I getting married? Am I going to work? You know, what are we doing here? Or both, you know? And so I just kind of needed to know.
Host
She's putting the heat on.
Sue Marshall
Yep.
Host
Trying to close the deal. And she did. Yeah.
Sue Marshall
How many years later?
Host
It'll be 36 this summer if we make it that far.
Betty Lou Busse
Yeah.
Sue Marshall
Oh, you will.
Betty Lou Busse
God willing.
Host
So, sue, you lift the fuse on all that. And so I. I don't know how I can thank you for giving me the greatest gift on planet Earth.
Sue Marshall
Well, godly wife, y' all have invited us to your beautiful home, and we so appreciate. We've. My husband and I have enjoyed it, and it's a beautiful view, and it's been great getting back.
Host
You know, we probably should have done that, oh, I don't know, 10, 15.
Sue Marshall
Years ago, probably, but, you know, it's okay. Hey, we're doing it now.
Betty Lou Busse
That's right.
Sue Marshall
That's all.
Betty Lou Busse
Make up for lost time.
Sue Marshall
That's right.
Host
So we're. We're going to take a quick break. Come back. I want to talk more about Betty and Hosko. And I have a list of questions that my kids have sent, and they want honest answers. Caitlin feels like for some reason, people are not being honest with her. How we were when we were kids. I don't know why.
Betty Lou Busse
I don't know either.
Host
So we'll be right back with Sue Marshall. You're listening to Bubba on the Lake.
Bubba
It's Bubba on the Lake. Bubba on the Lake.

You know one thing I love about buffalo wild wings? You can get wings with any of their 26 sauces and dry rubs for takeout and delivery. That's like bringing an entire B dubs home with you, which you can't do. I tried. I've knocked down so many walls only to then be told to halt construction because I'm not zoned to be a sports bar. Kinda just looks like a big pergola or something. Because of the lack of walls, at least these 26 sauces and dry rubs are available to go buffalo Wild Wings. Let's go, Sports bar.

I am so happy to announce that Our family dentist, Dr. Thomas Dudney, has joined my podcast as a sponsor. My entire family have been patients of Dr. Dudney and his team for over 20 years. Now, I'm going to be telling you a lot more about all of his services and what he does, but I have to tell you, the veneers that he gave me changed my life. I had no idea how big an impact that would have. You can call him today at 205-663-6545 or visit him at thomasdudney.com and find out more. Welcome back. We're visiting with Sue Marshall, the lady who we credit with introducing me and Betty Sue. Welcome back again. We're so glad to have you and Bill here.
Sue Marshall
We're happy to be here.
Host
So, sue, let's talk. Let's go back to the beginning. You're part of this. In high school, Betty was a cheerleader. Now, you were not. But y' all were friends, right?
Sue Marshall
Yes, I moved here or moved to Pleasant Valley the summer before we started ninth grade, so I knew nobody. And she was one of the first ones that just hopped over there.
Host
She really does. She hopped once. You walked?
Sue Marshall
Yeah. And she said, hey, I'm Betty. And that's how it started. And I tried to. To try out for cheerleading or. But no. No.
Host
But you were an athlete, though.
Sue Marshall
Yeah, I was an athlete. I played basketball, and I was in the band. I was actually the first drum major.
Host
Really? Well, I knew you were a pretty good basketball player. What position did you play?
Sue Marshall
I played forward and center, so.
Host
Oh, wow. Down in the paint, huh?
Sue Marshall
Yeah.
Host
Back before the three.
Sue Marshall
Yeah. So, yeah, it was fun. It was fun.
Betty Lou Busse
Yeah.
Sue Marshall
Yeah. Fun times.
Host
What you play in the band?
Sue Marshall
I played the trumpet.
Betty Lou Busse
Yeah, I think we cheered for y' all, too, didn't we? Didn't we cheer for the girls and the boys?
Sue Marshall
Oh, yeah, you did.
Betty Lou Busse
Yeah.
Sue Marshall
Yeah.
Betty Lou Busse
So here we were.
Sue Marshall
So we all went all to the ball games together and everything, rode the bus together. And all that, so. Yeah, we had fun times.
Betty Lou Busse
Yeah, it was fun. I still think of you every time I eat a Girl Scout cookie.
Sue Marshall
There you go.
Betty Lou Busse
I told you that yesterday. You know how different things, flavors or smells, will make you think of something or whatever. Yeah. Jurgens lotion and Girl Scout cookies.
Sue Marshall
There you go. Yeah.
Betty Lou Busse
Always thinking.
Host
Do we. Do we need to expand on that a little bit?
Betty Lou Busse
I won't get started on the Jovan musk goal with you. Good Lord.
Host
I got a fresh bottle.
Betty Lou Busse
Oh, I know, I know. I saw it. I thought.
Host
Please, Lord, I thought we got. I'm gonna spray a little that for old time's sake.
Betty Lou Busse
Making it. We'll have every deer in the county out here in New York.
Host
Well, the rumor was it had deer hormones in it. That's. That's why Betty. She was drawn to it. She had no choice.
Betty Lou Busse
It was just a natural instinct.
Host
Do you know, I look back now, we kind of had it made in high school and didn't know it. Didn't.
Betty Lou Busse
Oh, in the 80s. What a great.
Host
You mean the great. Wait a minute. The greatest decade mankind's ever seen.
Sue Marshall
Great.
Betty Lou Busse
I mean, no cell phones, you know.
Sue Marshall
Yeah. I had to go to a pay phone to call mom and say, hey.
Host
Our kids now, I couldn't call because.
Betty Lou Busse
I didn't have a phone.
Host
Yeah, they panicked at the idea of no cell phone, but. But also much better. Well, nobody could prove you did anything.
Betty Lou Busse
Yeah.
Host
You know, there was plausible deniability in that.
Betty Lou Busse
You know, likes do I get, you know, whatever.
Host
All that stuff. Yeah.
Sue Marshall
None of it's awful.
Betty Lou Busse
Yeah, not in the grand scheme of things, for sure.
Host
So, Sue, I asked my kids.
Betty Lou Busse
Although, please, like the podcast.
Host
Yes. It is a different world now.
Betty Lou Busse
Yes. Please subscribe. And, like.
Host
Hunter and Caitlin couldn't be here today, and. But my. I asked the kids if there was any questions they wanted to ask you about Betty and Hosko. Now, of course, Hunter has not sent one question, and Caitlin has sent a page full. Okay, so Caitlin's first question to you, sue, about Betty. Was she as funny as she is now in high school?
Sue Marshall
Oh, gosh, yes. For sure, for sure. She's just. That's how she has always been as long as I've known her. And I've known her since ninth grade, so. Yeah.
Host
Did Mom. This is from Caitlin. Did mom have a lot of boyfriends?
Sue Marshall
Well, I mean, no.
Betty Lou Busse
Morning by you.
Sue Marshall
Yeah. Yeah.
Host
Well, I knew several of them.
Betty Lou Busse
Yeah.
Sue Marshall
She was very liked by you.
Host
Why wouldn't you? Why. What is not to like about her?
Sue Marshall
Ugly.
Host
She's beautiful, she's blonde, she's funny, she walks on her tiptoes. I mean, who. Who doesn't love that?
Sue Marshall
She laughs all the time.
Host
Yes, yes. If you laugh, you're an easy target. That. That high score with me. I need somebody to build up my humor, ego, that's for sure.
Sue Marshall
Well, 30 something years, I'm.
Betty Lou Busse
Yeah, it's built.
Sue Marshall
I think she succeeded.
Betty Lou Busse
Yeah, that's right. That only goes built up.
Host
So the next question is. I want to know everything, which is not a question. What did her teachers think about her? What did other parents think about her?
Sue Marshall
Oh, she. All the teachers loved her.
Betty Lou Busse
Well, yeah. I should have got my yearbook out for that one. I could have read you.
Sue Marshall
Yeah, yeah. Now me, not so much.
Host
But.
Sue Marshall
Betty.
Host
Yeah? Were you in trou.
Sue Marshall
I was never trouble.
Betty Lou Busse
And it was just one. Our English teacher hated you.
Sue Marshall
I don't know what I did to her. The first. She was my homeroom teacher. Yeah. The first day I went to Pleasant Valley, she was my homeroom teacher.
Betty Lou Busse
Oh, my.
Host
And what did you do?
Sue Marshall
I didn't do nothing. I just sat there and she just. I don't know. I don't know if it was my last. I don't know if it was my last name.
Betty Lou Busse
No. Because there was a lot of greens.
Sue Marshall
I don't know.
Host
Yeah, I started to say that that whole neighborhood was full of greens.
Sue Marshall
I don't know. I don't know. But anyway, didn't go well for me for four years with her. But hey, I got through it.
Betty Lou Busse
You got through it.
Sue Marshall
Yeah.
Host
But everybody else you got along with.
Sue Marshall
Oh, yeah, yeah.
Betty Lou Busse
All the teachers were nice. Yeah, they were all good, you know, good teachers. Pleasant Valley was blessed to have our teachers in that community. I feel like. You know what I mean, looking back.
Host
And you were an office Aiden.
Betty Lou Busse
Oh, yeah. I was an office aide. A teacher aide.
Sue Marshall
At some point our senior year, that's all I was. I took B with the eighth grade. I was an office aide. I was a teacher.
Betty Lou Busse
A. Yeah.
Sue Marshall
My senior year was a breeze. I was like.
Host
Well, you were the center on the basketball team.
Sue Marshall
No wonder to do anything, you know, just.
Betty Lou Busse
What are we. We're doing? What do we do?
Host
So I'm confused here. What. What are we.
Sue Marshall
Never mind.
Betty Lou Busse
What does this mean?
Sue Marshall
Let's go on.
Betty Lou Busse
I was gonna. Do you remember every now and then they would let me do the intercom thing and say something over the intercom.
Sue Marshall
All the little.
Betty Lou Busse
Morning we were playing. I guess the announcements were. We were playing Alabama School for the Deaf or whatever. That Friday or whatever. And I accidentally announced we were playing the Alabama School for the Dead. And I thought, Juanita Whiten or whatever, you know, she was a secretary. She was about to pop. Mr. Wiggly comes out of his, you know, office. The principal, and I'm like, what? You know, I didn't know what I did. You know, I just mispronounced that one. So.
Host
Alabama School for the Dead.
Betty Lou Busse
Yeah, that. Bit of a tough game right there. We'd have won that one. Yeah, that would have been a forfeit.
Sue Marshall
But anyway.
Host
All right, I want to be clear. This announcement.
Betty Lou Busse
We've already won.
Host
This podcast has not been in the wine before we started. I want to be clear.
Betty Lou Busse
What time is it? Nine in the morning.
Sue Marshall
Not yet.
Host
So you. You also, I know, not only had some PA problems, you also had some typing issues.
Betty Lou Busse
Oh, no.
Sue Marshall
Typing.
Betty Lou Busse
Oh, that's okay. That's the teacher that was Ms. White, like me and do you know. Okay. I was supposed to type as the office aide. I was supposed to type the faculty handbook. You know, back then, they didn't have computers and able to run it off, so I was given the job to type it up. Well, the D and the S are very close on the typewriter. They're just opposite sides. You know what I mean? So I'm typing whatever. And I think Mr. Burns was supposed to proofread. Somebody proofread it. Well, apparently, I type instead of sickle. Did you ever hear Mr. Birds loves to tell this story? And so I'm like, crap. You know what I mean? What do you do there? But. But Mr. Purry, you know, the math teacher, you know, she was very.
Host
So nobody called. Nobody called to slip up until the meeting.
Betty Lou Busse
Yeah. And so she raises her hand. Mr. Burtz said, Ms. McCurry goes, does this leave apply to me? We have had a good laugh over that. But the typing teacher, she is the one teacher. Because I was always rolling somehow over my cord, and it would unplug all the typewriters around me, you know, when I would do that. And I didn't mean to. It just. There wasn't room to move in there, you know?
Sue Marshall
Yeah, she was very serious. She was like, it's all about.
Host
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Betty Lou Busse
She was my patient. Years later, when I was a nurse on third shift, I go in there and cut the light on because I didn't recognize the. I didn't realize it was Until I flicked that light on to do her temperature.
Host
Yeah.
Betty Lou Busse
Blood pressure and all that. She looked at me and said, oh, my gosh, I know you. I know I said, you're not in hell. It's okay.
Sue Marshall
And don't worry, I'm not going to be doing any type of eyes.
Betty Lou Busse
And I promise us, I'm not giving you emails.
Sue Marshall
No topic.
Betty Lou Busse
Oh, man. Yeah.
Host
I can't believe that. That it went that far that somebody didn't proofread that before. They said, okay, this is it, and made many, many copies and handed it out in a meeting.
Betty Lou Busse
I wish Mr. Burns was on this podcast right now because he could tell you he's the one that could probably tell some stories about everything.
Host
Oh, yeah. Yeah, he could. And he's funny. He's funny guy. We need to get him on.
Betty Lou Busse
Mm. Yep. You hear that, Mr. Burns? You're next.
Host
The old sick leaf Betty. That's good. I can just see her in that meeting, pointing to that book.
Betty Lou Busse
I'm sorry, does this apply to me?
Host
Oh, gosh. So see, what else about Betty, do you remember? Or what do you remember about Sue? Let's have. Let's have some fun with Sue. This for now.
Betty Lou Busse
She was very athletic, you know, which I was not. So anyway, I was always, you know, just impressed that you could do all that basketball. I could not play an instrument because, you know, our school was new, so they drug everybody, tried to get everybody in the band to learn how to play an instrument.
Sue Marshall
Yeah, just pick one.
Betty Lou Busse
Well, I tried two or three, and finally they just said, go back to your leading.
Sue Marshall
That's how y' all used to do me. Just stick with. Stick with basketball in the band because you cannot do a cartwheel. I know I can't do. Yeah, tried, but no.
Betty Lou Busse
Oh, man. But like you said, we're. We're always very similar because neither one of us take things too seriously.
Sue Marshall
No.
Host
Thank goodness.
Sue Marshall
Yeah.
Betty Lou Busse
Yeah. And even in high school, there was those that kind of did, you know, everything was life or death. It seemed like for them, you know.
Sue Marshall
I just had fun in school that sweated.
Betty Lou Busse
Yeah, I had fun. I tried to make good girls.
Host
You don't have to sell me on that.
Betty Lou Busse
But I did have fun.
Host
I went to college for 12 years. You ain't got to tell me. I changed it to tell people it was a decade of learning, you know, 10 years, because nobody believed 12. They thought, that's impossible. I go, no, it's not. It's really not.
Sue Marshall
Well, you know what my dad would say. He was a barber after he retired from the military, and he. He would tell everybody, you know, my daughter's been a senior for four years because, you know, they added a grade.
Betty Lou Busse
Oh, yeah.
Sue Marshall
Seniors in ninth grade.
Betty Lou Busse
That's right.
Sue Marshall
Yeah.
Betty Lou Busse
We were the first. What is it? Was it. Was it the first graduate graduating class? The charter class.
Sue Marshall
Yeah. And they would just add, we were seniors for four years, you know. Right.
Host
We really were.
Sue Marshall
Yeah. And my dad would tell people that, and they'd look at him like, well, you must have a really. You know, she really.
Host
She really enjoys studying.
Betty Lou Busse
Which, you know, that was. It was kind of good in a way, but it wasn't good because we didn't have anything to look up. Like, I remember when prom came around, and we were like, we're supposed to decorate for prom. You know what I mean? Because normally the juniors would decorate for the seniors and whatever, you know, so.
Sue Marshall
We had to do it.
Betty Lou Busse
We did it all.
Sue Marshall
Yeah. Yeah.
Betty Lou Busse
So that was funny. And we had no clue what we were doing.
Sue Marshall
No. We had nobody to.
Betty Lou Busse
No.
Sue Marshall
Figure it out.
Betty Lou Busse
As a cheerleader, you know, you normally would have the older cheerleaders to kind of, you know, get some thoughts from what to do at a pep rally or whatever. So we just kind of came up with our own thing, you know, Went okay.
Sue Marshall
Oh, yeah. Did good.
Betty Lou Busse
Yeah.
Sue Marshall
Just run around and.
Host
That's right.
Sue Marshall
All their little.
Host
Well, sue, we should have had this discussion, like, decades ago. And I. I'm. I'm embarrassed that we haven't done that, but for some reason, we thought you lived in another state somewhere. Yeah, we talked about you a lot. And then Betty said, you know, sue lives in Jacksonville. How did I not run into you somewhere?
Sue Marshall
I know. I don't know. Well, I just don't get out too much.
Betty Lou Busse
Well, I know. Come to find out, she never gets off Possum truck. That's right.
Host
That's right.
Sue Marshall
I just. Yeah. I just hang out on. On the Big Valley off Possum tr.
Host
If you. If you've got everything you need, why leave? And that's what I'd say.
Sue Marshall
Yeah. So.
Betty Lou Busse
Yeah. I don't get off Sundown Ridge much over here either.
Sue Marshall
Yeah, I wouldn't.
Host
I'd. I'd like to stay on Sundown Ridge a little more.
Betty Lou Busse
Yeah. Yeah.
Host
Yeah, there they are.
Betty Lou Busse
Dogs like it.
Host
Yeah. They're fired up again. The Barkers are at it. So, you know, I wonder, because the. The kids that went to Pleasant Valley would have gone to Jacksonville. Right. The majority of them hadn't built that school. And I just wonder if things would have been different if that had happened. Would we have met? Certainly would have met on the same circumstances. But I knew your brother because we.
Betty Lou Busse
Played basketball, because he went To Jackson them all. He sure did. Yep. Old Bobby, who knows?
Sue Marshall
It just meant to work out the way it did.
Host
It did. And right there, you were right in the middle of it, see?
Sue Marshall
Yeah. I was excited because I saw high five for you.
Betty Lou Busse
Way to go.
Host
I mean, you probably would like something nicer than a high five for a gift, but that's all we got.
Sue Marshall
This has been great.
Host
I saw Betty Meal at Collagia.
Sue Marshall
I mean, you know, after we had graduated several.
Betty Lou Busse
I don't know how long at that reunion.
Sue Marshall
And. Well, no, I had saw you out, and you were like, guess who I'm seeing again?
Betty Lou Busse
Oh, yeah?
Sue Marshall
Yeah. And I was like. She said, bill. I was like, all right. And then next thing I know, y' all are getting married.
Host
I'm like, yeah, you did it. Did you fix any other people up that got married? Are we the. We the soul?
Sue Marshall
Pretty much the.
Host
So we were the top. Top rung on that, huh?
Sue Marshall
Yep.
Betty Lou Busse
The old run.
Sue Marshall
All right.
Betty Lou Busse
I've never fixed anybody up that got married.
Host
I think several of who got married.
Sue Marshall
Have you? Yeah. Wow.
Host
Well, I'm not going to run the list right now. Some of them were through the show. You know, we used to do personal ad shows.
Betty Lou Busse
Yeah. Yeah.
Host
And we shamed one guy who broke up with his girlfriend to call her, and they ended up married. They've got beautiful kids now. Talk to him the other day, as a matter of fact.
Betty Lou Busse
Really?
Host
Yeah.
Sue Marshall
Okay. Nice.
Host
It's a good feeling in it.
Sue Marshall
Yeah.
Host
I mean, you don't want to just call attention to yourself over it all the time, but, like, I do. But you go, yes. I knew it. I just knew it. That that was the right thing to do. One of those moments in time. You never know when you got that ab and you got to make the right call.
Sue Marshall
That's right.
Betty Lou Busse
You know, the oab.
Host
We are the sum of our decisions. Well, sue, anything else we need to cover about your time at Pleasant Valley? You and Betty ready?
Betty Lou Busse
We're glad to be out. Yeah. Glad to be out of school. And many years later, I do not want to go back to school. College or high school.
Sue Marshall
That's not.
Betty Lou Busse
Yeah.
Host
I remember in high school, looking so. I mean, from like, fifth grade on, just thinking, I'll never get to 12th grade. Never. And then you get to 12th grade, and you have a good year. Senior, you know, a lot of things, you know, kind of set up to make that a good year. And you get on the other side of Christmas and you start thinking, oh, my gosh, what am I going to do? You Know, I got to. I got to get a plan here, and I don't have one.
Sue Marshall
Then it just goes. I mean, before you know it, you're.
Betty Lou Busse
Yeah, I'm 30s. Yeah.
Sue Marshall
Yeah.
Host
Well, both of y' all look great. Y' all have aged. Well, not all of us have. Okay. Getting up early will add years. I mean, it just. It's not the model year. It's the miles. You've been driven, and I've been running like a taxi most of my life.
Betty Lou Busse
Oh, my gosh. Yeah. Been busting rocks.
Host
I'm gonna call Caitlin to talk about your schedule. That is one of the funniest things she does, by the way. So just one more check to see if our son came up with a question. I think he must be satisfied with what we've had. Still nothing from Hunter Bus. Yep. We. We've really enjoyed getting to see you again. And your husband, Bill. And you. You ordered him from up north?
Sue Marshall
Yes. Yeah.
Host
Massachusetts? No, New Hampshire. New Hampshire.
Sue Marshall
Yeah. Can't get that from here.
Host
He's a super nice guy. How long have y' all been married?
Sue Marshall
25 years.
Host
Wow. Wow. That's crazy.
Sue Marshall
It just goes by so fast.
Host
I mean, but think about our age now and in high school, how you looked at that age.
Sue Marshall
Oh, yeah. I thought, I'm gonna die at any minute.
Host
I thought life was over about 40. Oh, yeah, I figured. Yeah. You know, you're just hanging on after that.
Betty Lou Busse
We're in their 40s, and I thought, wow, they're old.
Banker Bounty Announcer
Yeah.
Betty Lou Busse
You know what I mean? And, shoot.
Host
Yeah, I don't. I don't feel that started much now, but, you know, it's creeping up on us.
Sue Marshall
Yeah, it does.
Host
You got to make the most of it.
Sue Marshall
That's right.
Betty Lou Busse
Who knew 50 years later my mom would still be telling jokes?
Host
Yeah, that's.
Betty Lou Busse
Oh, man.
Host
Your mom has really come out of her shell the last few years.
Betty Lou Busse
She's done well. She really has.
Host
How old will she be this year?
Betty Lou Busse
94.
Sue Marshall
Wow.
Host
Is she listening to the podcast?
Betty Lou Busse
No, she doesn't have a.
Host
You don't think one of your sisters would love to throw you under the bus to let her hear from us? Or Bobby?
Betty Lou Busse
Oh, no. Nah, they probably don't.
Host
Well, if she survived last week, this will be a walk through the park.
Betty Lou Busse
Oh, she's all right. She'd get a kick out of it.
Host
I mean, what can she do? She can't run you down spanking.
Betty Lou Busse
That's right. That's right. What is she gonna do? She can't outrun me now.
Host
Yeah, you Hide her Walker.
Betty Lou Busse
Oh, man.
Host
So, sue, thank you. Thanks to Bill. Thank y' all for coming over. And we're gonna try to get in the boat and get a little lake time.
Sue Marshall
All right.
Host
The wind will die down a little bit. A little windy today.
Sue Marshall
Yeah, it has been windy.
Betty Lou Busse
It's gonna be hard to dock it.
Sue Marshall
Rainy.
Host
Yeah. I'm gonna tell you, docking a pontoon in the wind is a. I mean, it's a little. It's an exercise in geometry and physics because not only are you blowing sideways, you're spinning.
Betty Lou Busse
Yeah.
Host
Because the back of the boat catches more wind with a canopy on it. So.
Sue Marshall
Yeah, we don't want to do what y' all did.
Host
No, no.
Betty Lou Busse
We don't want to go Dukes of Hazard.
Host
No, we're. No.
Betty Lou Busse
Yeah.
Host
I still hear about that everywhere I go. That was a real boneheaded thing for me to do, to go airborne in a. In a pontoon boat. You know, they're not designed for that, honestly.
Sue Marshall
They're not aerodynamic, Those kind of boats.
Host
Yeah.
Betty Lou Busse
Yeah.
Sue Marshall
Special for ramps.
Betty Lou Busse
Right.
Host
I remember flying through the air, thinking, this is bad, you know, because it's like the cone of silence. You're floating, and you're thinking, oh, gosh, what just happened? And you're trying to figure out, why am I airborne?
Sue Marshall
You know, why are there pillows going down the air?
Host
And then about then, the front of the boat is plowing into the water, you know, and you're like, oh, please come back up.
Betty Lou Busse
And this coming from Safety Bob.
Host
It's embarrassing. It's embarrassing. It really is. Well, so thank you for being here. Thanks for Bill. And I hope this is not the last time we get to see you.
Sue Marshall
Oh, I hope not.
Host
We got to pick the pace up. Let's not make it up another 25 years, because chances are I won't be here.
Sue Marshall
Well, hopefully so.
Host
I don't know. 25 is a long time. Play the odds there Saturday Night Live.
Sue Marshall
That.
Betty Lou Busse
Like, I went to.
Sue Marshall
What was it?
Betty Lou Busse
She, like, went to Disney World, and the line was so long, and then I got gang green or something like that. They're like, you know.
Host
Well, we're off on a tangent here, so. Anyway, so thank you, Betty. Thank you. And, Sue, I. I don't know how I can ever repay you for this one right here.
Sue Marshall
Hey, I'm just happy y' all are happy. That's all that matters. It's all about being happy.
Host
It worked out. It is. We'll be back in just a minute. You're listening to Bubba on the Lake.

We are back in the Melloyalla Studio. It is Bub on the Lake. We want to thank sue and her husband Bill for coming and spending time with us. They spent several days. We got to catch up and laugh and we had a great time. So good to hear from them. And how do I ever thank sue for setting me up with the lovely Betty Lou? You talk about the butterfly effect. If she had not done that, all that we've got going on right now probably would not be happening. I know a couple of kids that wouldn't be around, so we have a lot to thank her for. And you know, you always wonder if it was destiny and meant to be, would the universe have put us back together in some other scenario if that one didn't work out? But I certainly appreciate sue and everything that she did. We want to remind you that we still have the comment line 308 Big Lake. 308 Big Lake. Send those on. Love to hear from you on those. And of course, emails@bubba babaonthelake.com in this segment here and as we wrap up this episode, it is with heavy heart that I have to say I lost a long lost friend this week. His name is Greg Warren. He passed away, and Greg was scheduled to be a guest on this very podcast in a few weeks. Greg has been a friend. He was a few years older than me in high school, but I met Greg when we were all in the big CB craze. He was one of the guys I used to talk to on the CB back in the 70s. He invited me to come up to the College Radio Station, WLJS 92J@ Jacksonville State University and see that operation when he was working there in college. And I went up and visited him and, you know, after we saw everything there and all the flashing lights and all the records and got to hang out and watch him do a little bit of an air shift, I was hooked. I was probably 9th or 10th grade, and that had a tremendous effect on me and the trajectory that I wanted to go. I knew I wanted to be in the radio business. I wanted to be around that. I enjoyed that. And at the time at our college radio station, you had to get in line to get an overnight shift. So we worked on that. And then when we got in college a few years later, we got on the air there, and as they say, the rest is history. So we're going to miss Greg. I had not seen him in a while, and he actually worked for me at one point at a little electronics store that I had. So we had several times that we ran together in life, and I thought the world of Greg. Great guy. We're just going to miss him. We reconnected not too long ago when we were beginning plans for our 50th anniversary at 92J, the College Radio station. And he was at the meeting. We got some pictures made. I actually posted them online with me and him and, and Coach Kelly, and we took a little tour of the new field house there. And I was very much looking forward to seeing him, interviewing him about those early days at the college radio station and everything going on. But sadly, we have lost him. So our thoughts and prayers are with his family in this time, and we just want them to know we love Greg and he will be deeply missed. We appreciate all of you being part of this podcast. I hope you enjoyed that little walk back through history with me and Betty. And we'll be bringing you more and more as we continue, and we appreciate you being part of it. Remember 308 Big Lake Keep those comments coming, keep the emails coming, and as always, we need you to subscribe and turn on notifications. Also, follow us on social media, including our Instagram account bubbaonthelake, and it will be much appreciated. We thank all of you for being a part of this podcast. And remember I said it a few weeks ago. I really do believe this. I heard a preacher say it not too long ago. God's greatest blessing and greatest miracle is if you're not praying for a miracle today. Bore our health and everything, we just take it for granted. But you know, it's such a blessing each and every day. Let's just be thankful and I am thankful for you and we hope to catch you again on Bubba on the Lake.

Bubba On the Lake: "When Bubba Met Betty..." Released: June 2, 2025
In this heartfelt episode of Bubba On the Lake, host Bill "Bubba" Bussey takes listeners on a nostalgic journey back to the origins of his relationship with his wife, Betty Lou Bussey. Joined by Betty and a very special guest, Sue Marshall, who played a pivotal role in their love story, Bubba delves into high school memories, recounts humorous anecdotes, and reflects on the impact of their union over the years.
The episode begins with Bubba expressing immense gratitude towards Sue Marshall, the woman who introduced him to Betty. Sue shares her friendship with Betty and her role in bringing the two together.
[03:41] Host: "It is a lady that I owe a debt of gratitude that I don't know how I can ever pay you... the former Sue Green, now Sue Marshall."
Bubba narrates the circumstances under which Sue orchestrated his introduction to Betty. It was a cold winter night in 1982 during a basketball game at Pleasant Valley, where Bubba attended the city school, Jacksonville High School. Sue recounts how Bubba's friend Stephen was eager for him to find a girlfriend, leading to the initial setup.
[04:44] Host: "It was a cold winter night in 1982 as we traveled to Pleasant Valley for a basketball game..."
