The Midnight Mystery presents Bunker 8 Season 1 Episode 3 Shadows Huh. So here I am in the middle of Antarctica, holding a human ear within a bunker that no one's ever heard of. Okay, I guess it's finally starting to make sense now. No wonder why they're so vague about the details. In the beginning, anyone might have freaked out and ran, but me? I've been through worse. Seeing things most people wouldn't believe. This. This doesn't rattle me. Maybe. Maybe that's why they picked me for the job. My eyes drifted upward, catching sight of a hatch in the ceiling. So that's how they got here. Dropping someone through that. It must have been a long fall. Definitely enough to break legs on impact. Jeez, that's. That's pretty grim. But. But it's clever. In a twisted way. It ensured that they couldn't run off. I guess they wanted control. I mean, whoever designed this had control in mind, making escape nearly impossible. Then there's that other door with the odd symbols all over it. What could be behind there? I guess that's a question for another time. For now, I better start cleaning up this mess before the smell gets worse. All right, I think that should do it. Violet, You. You there?
Violet
Jack? What seems to be the issue? You're not supposed to report until tomorrow.
Jack
I. Yeah, yeah, I know that. I'm sorry. It's just. I have a few questions. I found something. In the cell block. I found an ear. A human ear. And there's A hatch in the ceiling. It looks like someone was dropped in there. It's just. This isn't in the guidelines.
Violet
Okay. And?
Jack
Nothing. It's all cleaned up.
Violet
Good. Anything else?
Jack
I felt bad after the last conversation we had. She was right. I was going to be stuck here for six months. It couldn't hurt to have someone to talk to. Listen, Violet, I don't really do this much.
Violet
What? Cleaning the bodies?
Jack
What? No, no, that's the easy part. It's part of the job. Right. It's just. I don't really like talking. I've always had a problem talking to people. That's one of the reasons why I took this job. Six months away from society. It sounded like a dream come true.
Violet
Yeah, I kinda got that.
Jack
This is hard for me, but I just wanted to say.
Violet
It's all right, Jack. I get it. People suck.
Jack
Yeah.
Violet
So now that you've got me, can I ask you a question?
Jack
Uh, yes. Sure.
Violet
Okay. When you saw what was in the cell, what were your thoughts?
Jack
Um. I don't really know. First I thought it was some type of livestock, like a cow or a pig. But as soon as I saw the ear, I didn't really feel anything. I just knew I had a job to do.
Violet
Huh.
Jack
Why?
Violet
Usually with the previous workers before you, they would blow up screaming that they wanted out, demanding that they want to quit. So if that's what they requested, we terminated their contract.
Jack
Oh. Okay. Well, yeah. Thank God I'm not like the others then. Yeah, I know it's only been a day, but. But I think I like it here.
Violet
Good to know. Do you mind if I ask you a personal question?
Jack
Depends. But no, not at all.
Violet
What were you doing before this?
Jack
I wasn't too sure why Violet was asking me these questions. Maybe she was bored and just wanted to talk. I guess I didn't really have anything else to do until tomorrow. Umm. Before this, I was kinda all over the place.
Violet
What do you mean?
Jack
Well, after my time in the army, I didn't really know what to do with my life. Friends and family kept asking me what my plan was, but I just kept saying the same thing to them. I have no idea.
Violet
Yeah, I get that. We've all been there before. It just takes time.
Jack
I don't know. I felt a sense of pressure. They were busy trying so hard to get married and have kids as soon as possible, but I never really knew why. I guess it was just society forcing that shit down our throats. Thinking that if I. I don't know. Thinking if I'm not married by the age of 25. Then I've failed at life. But. But it's complete bullshit. I stopped. I realised I'd never spoken this much in a long time. Was. Was she even listening? Ah, shit. I was probably boring her to death. I should stop.
Violet
And what else don't you have?
Jack
Like a profile on me or something like that? Telling you everything about me?
Violet
Yeah, but I hate reading. Plus, you're a bit of a mystery. Almost everything about you is classified.
Jack
Yeah, there were. There were a few things in the army.
Violet
What happened in the army?
Jack
I stopped. Again. Don't go there. You know what happens. Uh, yeah. Nah, that's not gonna happen. I. I don't really like talking about the army.
Violet
Damn. Almost had you.
Jack
Yeah, you almost had me.
Violet
Okay, so we won't talk about the army. Good to know. Then, after the army, what did you do?
Jack
I traveled a bit. I tried new things. Even had a girlfriend for a little bit. She was nice. But I kinda screwed that up.
Violet
Oh, so you're single?
Jack
I. Yeah. What does that have to do with anything?
Violet
Nothing.
Jack
Okay. What about you then?
Violet
What about me?
Jack
Um. How. How long have you been doing this for, huh?
Violet
We'll save that for another time. We have six months together. I can't tell you all my secrets. Plus, I think it's best if you get some sleep. Okay?
Jack
Yeah. Yeah, I guess you're right. I should really get some sleep. Have a good night. And thanks for the chat. Oops. Sorry. And just before I go, I saw something in the cell that wasn't in the guidebook. I saw these strange markings on the other door. Do you know what they are? Or do you know what they mean? Violet? Violet, are you still there? Okay. I guess she's gone. Alright. I stared at the blinking light on the comms panel longer than I should have. Silence filled the room again. The way I liked it. But this time it felt different. Not the usual quiet I'd gotten used to down here. There was a weight to it now. Something I couldn't quite shake. Talking to Violet wasn't as bad as I expected. Not sure what I expected, really. Thought it'd be awkward, you know, Like a lot of forced conversation. But she kept it simple. Straight to the point. No unnecessary questions. I appreciated that. Still, it was strange. They never really told me that I was going to be talking to someone else while I was down here. Six months. Okay? It's just six months. I can handle that. Hmm. I should really try out that beef and vegetables. Maybe I should get a little workout before Bed. What's the time? Wait. 10:30. Wow. O o okay. I guess time really does pass quickly down here. First night in the bunker, I wasn't a big fan of the bed. It was a little too soft, but that was alright. I just moved the blanket and sheets to the floor. I'd always liked sleeping on the ground, but. But I just still couldn't sleep. I kept hearing a strange noise. I tried to guess what the sound was like. The pipes, the machinery. It was a sound I hadn't quite heard before, but. But it was nice. It kept my mind occupied. It stopped me from thinking, you know, thinking about other. It had been a couple of days now, but. But there was something not quite right about the time here. There had been a few cases where what felt like a couple of minutes were actually a couple of hours. I even tested it out. It's not like I had anything else to do down here. I watched the clock straight for an hour and counted the seconds. You know how you watch a clock tick past? It feels like forever to pass. But down here I counted the seconds and it was spot on. I don't know. It was weird, but I was getting used to it all. I'd even made a schedule. My days in bunker eight always began at 6am I'd jump out of bed and hit the floor for a quick workout, knowing it was the best way to get the blood pumping and keep my mind sharp. By 6:45, I would be in the shower, scrubbing off all the sweat and waking up fully. Then it was straight to the small kitchen for breakfast. Nothing fancy, just the plain old chicken and rice or the beef and carrots. Something that would fuel me for the day ahead. After eating around 7:45, I'd sit down with a bunker's handbook, reviewing my tasks and checking my special instructions. Mornings were all about routine maintenance checks and surveillance monitoring. It was my job to make sure everything was secure and running smoothly. Every detail mattered in here. Lunch at noon was my break from the routine. Afterward, I wandered through the bunker. Not that there was ever really anything new to do. I just needed to do something. At 2pm I checked in with Violet. Even though I wasn't really supposed to. I just. I don't know, I just kind of liked hearing a voice. Then in the late afternoon, was was pretty much for following specific instructions like managing the cells and winding down operations. Then at 4pm I unlocked one of the cells to clean up the mess inside. I started to get used to the smell eventually. Then by 6pm I was having dinner Then I took some time to unwind, usually with some writing or sketching. I wasn't really good at it, but it helps time go by faster. I kept thinking about what it's like outside of the bunker. Is it daytime or nighttime? I've just been in here. I've just got no idea what it's like out there anymore. Before bed, I did one last check of the bunker to make sure all doors were secured and systems operational. Then by 9pm I was usually in bed, trying to get some rest before it all started all over again. This routine. It kept me sane down here. Or at least that was my plan. Jesus Christ. Oh, no. Not again. Recently, my dreams are. They're becoming more vivid. I felt like I was actually there this time. And I started hearing more of those strange noises during the day. I realized that the noises, they. They traveled. It first started in the comms room. Then it moved out into the hallway. I followed the sound, but I led towards a dead end near the cells. I wondered if it was the people being transferred into them. I was now used to this sound. It was like clockwork to me. Let's see. Cell C loaded. Good. The timer was clicking down. 4, 3, 2. And. Locked door. I waited a moment, but this one was different from the others. The comms room. It started to shake. What the hell? What did I do wrong? I followed everything to the tee. The computer screen. It started to glitch out, like. But I saw something. It was a recording. It looked like my comms room, but it wasn't me. It was someone else in the room standing there. And in the. In the corner. I looked over to the corner but couldn't see anything. The shaking stopped. Shit. The cell. Both doors were locked. Oh. Oh, geez. Good. Come on. Come on. Where is it? Success. Oh, thank God. Oh, geez. What the hell was that? Who was that standing in the corner? Hang on. Wait. If. If that was a recording, then there should be a camera right about there. Nothing. It's. It's just a blank wall. Was that just part of my imagination? But it all looks so real. I had to report this in. Violet? Violet, come in. Violet. Violet, are you there? Violet? Nothing. Why wasn't she picking up where the comms down? Shit. Okay, think. Think. All right, let's just stick to the schedule. Let's. Let's go clean up. It was probably nothing. I'll try again. Ah, shit. I forgot to unlock the door. Ah. As I turned the corner into the comms room, I saw it. There was someone standing in the corner. Not facing me, but facing the wall. But then they just vanished. Was my mind playing tricks on me? It had to be. Jesus Christ. It's only been a couple of days, though, as my mind finally started to crack. But I felt fine. That. That was something else, though. Whoever that was, it. It seemed real. Shit. Okay. What was I thinking? It must have just been the lights playing tricks on me. Okay. You're fine. Okay. Okay. It's unlocked. Let's just go clean up then. Then let's just report it in. I passed the corner towards the cell and noticed cell C. There was more blood than usual. Something wasn't right. I peered into the cell and noticed body parts. But it was more than one person this time. What the hell happened here? I looked up at the hatch and it was closed off. Did. Did more than one person fall? Jeez. That's when I started grabbing a couple of legs and. And a few arms. But that's when I noticed it. An engagement ring on the hand. This. This purse was buried. Stop it. This wasn't my job. Forget it. Put it in the bag and keep cleaning. The bags were really heavy this time. I had to take them to the incinerator, then report. Wait, what. What was that? I looked back at the door with the strange markings. The. The scratching sounds were coming from there. I thought someone was still alive. Stop. Do your job.
Violet
Jack, come in.
Jack
Wait, was. Was that Violet? The comms.
Violet
Jack, are you there?
Jack
Yeah, yeah, yeah, I'm here.
Violet
Oh, thank God. What happened? We received an alert from your bunker.
Jack
I have no idea. I tried to report him before, but I didn't get any response.
Violet
What are you talking about? I've been here the whole time. I haven't heard a single thing from you today.
Jack
What? But I tried like three times, but there was nothing.
Violet
It doesn't matter now. What's the report?
Jack
I paused. I. I had to catch a breath. I just needed this.
Violet
Jack?
Jack
Yes, yes, sorry. I'm still here.
Violet
What's the report?
Jack
I did everything as per usual, but this time I don't know what happened. There was. There was like a tremor or something. The room, it started to shake and I heard these weird sounds. Sounds I haven't heard before.
Violet
Was it successful?
Jack
Yeah, it was a success. But the cell. When I went to check on it, there were multiple bodies there. What happened?
Violet
Wait, did you say multiple bodies?
Jack
Yeah, like the hatch didn't close properly or something. But it looked like more than one body came through.
Violet
Shit.
Jack
I paused again. I didn't know what else to say.
Violet
Jack, I need you to listen to me carefully. Have you seen any signs of anyone else inside the bunker with you?
Jack
I did. There was that person in the corner, but that wasn't real. That was just a part of my imagination. I don't think I should be telling her that, Jack.
Violet
Answer the question.
Jack
No, I haven't seen anyone.
Violet
Was the other door closed when you went in?
Jack
Yeah. Yeah, it was closed.
Violet
Okay, good. Good. Listen, Jack, I need to report this to the higher ups. I'm going to be off comms for a while. Is that all right?
Jack
Yeah, that's. That. That's fine.
Violet
All right. Talk to you tomorrow.
Jack
No worries. I'll. I'll talk to you then. I'd never heard Violet in such a panic before. What the hell happened? Why did she ask if there was anyone else down here? Could one of them survive the fall? The scratching. I forgot to tell her. Shit. The bags. Wait. What the hell is that? The bags had a hole in them and the blood ran towards the dead end section of the hallway. But the blood looked like it crept through a crack at the bottom of the wall. Wait. Wait a second. This was that same dead end where the sounds travelled to. I placed my head on the wall and knocked. There's. There's another room behind here. Bunker 8 written and edited by Dean Smyth. Story by Dean Smythe. Starring Laura Hamilton as Violet and Dean Smyth as Jack.
