Beautiful working world bunker 8 is a horror and sci fi audio drama that explores disturbing themes and intense moments. Some content may be unsettling for certain listeners. Listener discretion is adventure. The Midnight Mystery Presents Bunker 8 Season 3 Episode 2 After the Fall.
David
Who the hell's Violet?
Jack
Wrong answer. He's stalling. I can hear it in his voice. Too calm for a man with a gun in his face. Either he's trained for this, or. Or he's already decided I won't pull the trigger.
David
No, seriously, who is she? You break into my house in the middle of the night, drag me out of bed at gunpoint, and start asking me about someone I've never met?
Jack
Don't bullshit me. You ran flights to bunk eight. You logged rotations. You relayed audio. You know who she is.
David
I don't. Jack, what is this?
Jack
How am I still alive? Hell, I don't even know the answer myself, but I need to see it on his face. And there it is. That flicker of fear that he knows something I don't. What? That's what you're thinking. You're not thinking about Violet. You're thinking about me. You're thinking how the hell am I standing in your living room after the fall? I. I should be dead. Right? I know exactly what you are thinking. So don't give me any more of this bullshit. Okay.
David
Okay. Okay. The protocol wasn't meant to leave survivors. That's not possible. The fall is.
Jack
What is it?
David
A full security purge, full lockdown. No one comes back from that.
Jack
Well, apparently I did. That shouldn't be possible Then Maybe it's time you stop pretending we understand how any of this works.
David
Jack, whatever this is. I don't know anything about Violet. I swear to God.
Jack
Swear to whoever you want. It makes no difference to me. You got a nice family here.
David
What do you want from me?
Jack
You know exactly what I want. I want the truth.
David
We thought you were dead. No reports, no pings. You just vanished like the rest of them.
Jack
Tell me something. After the fall, how long did it take you to replace me?
David
Replace you? After the fall, there was no one to replace. Every bunker shut down. Not just eight. All of them. Uplink, power, comms, everything just died. I was in the air when it started. Chopper run from Station 4, routine cargo return. Then mid flight. Everything dropped. Comms turned to static. Nav systems blanked out. Engine sensors went haywire. Pilot? Pilot was yelling, banging on the controls. Nothing responding. Down below, nothing. Whole grid gone. No lights, no movement. Just outlines of cities against a dying sky. Like staring into the end of something. We were lucky. It was dusk. There was still just enough light left in the sky for the pilot to put us down. Barely. Emergency landing in a wheat field outside Fort Huxley. No Power? No radio. We thought it was local.
Jack
A glitch.
David
Then we started getting calls. Panic bursts. And then nothing. Not silence. Absence. Like something had erased everything and left us there to watch. Took four days before the board lit up again. Four days of waiting, not knowing what was left. When it came back, it didn't explain a thing. Was told that every bunker and every name had the fall initiated. Yours was one of the first. What happened in Bunker eight? Shut up.
Jack
You remember reading my file? And I don't mean that public version that you read to me on the helicopter ride over. I mean that internal one, the real one. It started off normal. Then halfway through, it just. Just turns into pages of black ink. You remember that?
David
I remember what I was allowed to see.
Jack
Right, because they didn't just black out mistakes. They erased the orders themselves. They didn't want anyone asking why I did what I did or who told me to do it. You read that file. You saw what they tried to bury. You know what I'm capable of. And you know damn well what's behind all that black ink. So don't insult both of us by pretending you don't know who Violet is, because I don't.
David
Jack, I swear, I don't know anyone named Violet. Not in my rotation, not in my logs. You think I'd lie to your face now?
Jack
Yeah. Yeah, absolutely you would. You know, I used to think I could handle anything. It didn't matter what they threw at me. It didn't matter if I came back a little more hollow each time. As long as I came back, I figured that I was fine. But after a while, you stop feeling like a person. You're just a piece of gear. Something they pack up, send out and leave behind if it gets too damaged. Violet. She never treated me like that. She actually paid attention. Not just to the job, but. But to me. You've never been inside Bunker 8, so you wouldn't have a good goddamn clue about what happens in there. I was alone down there. The. The bodies would just drop into the cells. Blood smeared across the floors, bone fragments stuck in the cracked cement. I cleaned it up every time. That's what they expected. So I did it. And through all of it, she. She was the only voice I heard. Not commands, not check ins. It was just her. And somehow she always knew when to talk. Right when I needed it. If she hadn't, I don't think I'd still be here. She never made a big deal out of it. Even though she was just a voice on the line. It was so Much more than that. She made things feel normal. Made me feel normal. Even if it was only for a minute. And sometimes that's enough to keep you from breaking. She knew when I was sleeping. She never used that against me. She never wrote it down, never flagged it. She just listened. Shit. You don't know what's in those bunkers. None of you do. You think it's some classified site with a security badge and a few locked doors? They didn't build that place. They found it. And instead of asking what it is, they wired it up and threw people inside. People like me. To contain whatever the fuck is locked up in there. And when things got bad, really bad, Violet was the only one still there. And now she's gone. Wiped off the map like she never existed. No reports, no no search. Just silence. She kept me going when no one else gave a damn. Now it's on me to return the favour. And I think you're smart enough to know what happens if you lie to me again. Because I won't ask again. I think you're smart enough to be scared of what happens if you do tell me the truth.
David
I'm telling you what I know.
Jack
No, you're saying whatever you think might stop me from pulling the trigger. Let's try something else. Your daughter's name is Mara. And your son's name, it's Caleb. That right? Oh, and your wife, well, ex wife now. She left five years ago. I read the court filing. Can't say I blame her. Honestly, I'm surprised she lasted as long as she did. Let's see if I remember. Mara's, what, about 29 now. Lives up near Ash Creek. Two kids, Emily and Jonah. She walks them to school every morning, rain or shine. Jonah, he likes dinosaurs, right? And Emily, she draws stars on everything. She thinks you're a hero. Now, Caleb, he's in Austin. Married a woman named Natalie. She's a teacher. They've got a newborn, right? Little girl. She's got hazel eyes. But you don't talk much. Him and you. You guys never really saw eye to eye. But he still picks up the phone when you call. Though I can see why he wouldn't. So when you sit there and tell me you don't know, Violet, when you try to buy time with lies, just know. I already know everything worth losing in your world. And if you make me go looking for the truth on my own, you won't even hear it when it happens. You'll just wake up one morning and they'll be gone. Quiet. Clean. Just Gone.
David
Jesus. What the hell are you?
Jack
Someone who doesn't like being lied to.
David
Okay. Okay. Violet. She wasn't in the system. No name, no mugs, nothing. Whatever program she was part of, it was buried deep. Clearance beyond anything I ever touched.
Jack
But you knew she was there.
David
I heard the name a few who actually survived the six months down there. When they get out, they mentioned her. People said she wasn't part of the structure. She was the structure. A handler for something inside. My guess, it was for you guys.
Jack
You know where she is?
David
I shouldn't. But I overheard something weeks after the blackout. A reroute hush order. Top level extract. Buried under false intel coordinates. Now, if I give you the location, you don't say it came from me. You don't say my name. You vanish and you let my family stay alive.
Jack
You're bargaining.
David
I'm begging. I've got kids, Jack. They didn't choose this. Just let them grow up.
Jack
Give me a location.
David
Rockies. Black ridge District. Level 4. Access point beneath an old Cold War comm station. Completely off grid. It was sealed 10 years ago, but it's still drawing power. That's where they sent her. If she's alive, she's there.
Jack
You're going to tell them I'm coming, aren't you?
David
They'll kill me. Not threaten, not warn. Just gone. Even giving you that, that's enough for a bullet in my head.
Jack
I wish I could believe you.
David
You're not gonna kill me. You got what you wanted. Jack. Please. Jack, wait.
Jack
No. No. Not again. No. Just breathe. Breathe. You need to come with us, Jack.
David
Max.
Frank
Didn't think you'd make it this far.
Jack
God damn it. They're getting worse.

That favor I asked for.
Frank
Send me the address. That's pretty far out. I'll be there in an hour, maybe more. Roads are shit this time of night.
Jack
That's fine. I'll get everything ready for you.
Frank
Hunter.
Jack
3.
Frank
So, what have you been up to this past couple months?
Jack
If I told you, you wouldn't believe me.
Frank
That bad, huh?
Jack
Yep.
Frank
You dig it, you fill it.
Jack
That a rule?
Frank
It is now.
Jack
I should feel something, right? Guilt, relief, rage. Something. But it's just quiet. Not the kind of quiet you notice. The kind that settles. Like the inside of your chest's been hollowed out and packed with cold Air. I've killed before. Plenty of times. This feels different. He wasn't a monster. He was just Weak. Scared. Trying to survive in a world that doesn't make sense anymore. And I put a bullet in his head like it was just a task to check off. Not because I wanted to, but. But because I couldn't risk it. And now he's in the ground. And I'm still standing here. Like I'm waiting for something to hit me. But it never does. Just this quiet. Like I buried part of myself in there with him. And the worst part is, I don't even miss it.
Frank
Was this it?
Jack
Almost. I need a ride.
Frank
Of course you do. Where?
Jack
And that's why I called him. Frank won't ask questions. We've. We've buried things together before, so this isn't new to him. Things that we had to do. God, he's not clean, but he's reliable. Doesn't pry, doesn't judge. I didn't want Frank to be a part of this. But when there's no one else you can trust, you go back to the only person who'll have your back. He deserves better than being dragged into this mess. But I need a body buried. And he's the only one who won't ask why. Still, the more people I bring into this, the more I risk dragging them down with me. They don't know what's out there. Not really. Ah, it's. It's up near the Rockies. Black Ridge district. It's an old Cold war comm station, completely off grid.
Frank
Better not be haunted.
David
Ah.
Jack
It'S probably worse.
David
It.
