Industry, head to go. Acast.com Academy Bunker 8 is a horror and sci fi audio drama that explores disturbing themes and intense moments. Some content may be unsettling for certain listeners. Listener discretion is adv. The Midnight Mystery Presents Bunker 8 Season 3 Episode 8 the Choice how long has she been in there? Jack, how long has she been in there? Since the 60s. The 60s? You've had her trapped behind that door for over 60 years. It wasn't my call, but you stood by and let it happen. 60 goddamn years of experiments. I didn't have a choice. Always had a choice. You think I wanted this? You think anyone did? She wasn't just a prisoner. She stabilized the system. Her presence alone kept the other bunkers from collapsing. She saved more lives than you and I combined. How? We don't exactly know. Jesus Christ. There's something in that chamber we still can't explain. It kept her alive. She hasn't aged a day since we locked that door. So he kept her alive for data with. We kept her alive because it worked. He really believes it. That makes it even worse. They thought this was necessary. Acceptable. Why her? Out of everyone, why Violet? We didn't pick her. She just survived. The others didn't. Others? How many were there? Enough to know that Violet was different. We tried to replicate what she did, how she stabilized things. No one lasted more than a few days. Did she? Did she even understand what you were doing to her? Maybe at first. After a while, we couldn't tell anymore. But even unconscious, even barely alive, she held the line. Thousands lived because of her. You used her like she was some broken machine you could just plug in and forget about. This isn't about morality. It's survival. Open the door now, Jack. Open it now.

It's colder in here. Drier. Like the air hasn't moved in decades. What the hell are these red lines crisscross the floor? They look like wires, cables maybe powering something at the centre. But they're moving slightly, I'll say to him.
B
Jack.
A
Violet. Violet. She's here, but I can't see her. She called my name clear as anything, but. But where the hell is she? I follow the red line snaking along the floor, disappearing into the shadows. Her voice felt like it came from that direction. Violet, I. I can't see anything. Where. Where are you?
B
Jack. You came.
A
I'm here, Violet.
B
Just.
A
Just keep talking. I'm close.
B
It's strange hearing you without the static. It's nicer than I thought I would be.
A
That. That voice. No static. No speaker distortion. It's just her. I've heard Violet talk countless times, but never heard her sound truly alive. Until now. Wait. I can see a faint red glow up ahead. It's subtle at first, just a low light bleeding through the darkness, pulsing steadily from deeper inside the room. That has to be where Violet is. Oh, God. What the hell is this? There's a. Jesus. There's a large metallic structure standing upright in the center of the room. Roughly the size of a person. Thick steel plates welded together, reinforced by heavy bolts along every edge. There's no visible handle or obvious opening mechanism, just smooth metal panels. These red wires I've been following, they. They connect to it. They spill out from the base, spreading across the floor and disappearing into openings in the walls. I don't understand what I'm looking at. It looks like a coffin. As I move closer, I see the details more clearly. My hand trembles slightly as I reach toward it. There are latches. They line the side of the structure, suggesting it can be opened. Then I notice something worse. The wires aren't just connected to the surface. They're. They're coming out from inside it. If Violet's inside this, I need to help her. Last one. Oh, God. No. No. This. This can't be.
B
It's.
A
It's Violet. It's really her. But her arms, her. Her legs, they're. They're missing those red wires running across the floor. Aunt. Why is there. Her veins. Her nerves. Twisted. Pulled out of her body, feeding into the walls. God, Violet. What have they done to you?
B
Hey, Jack. Took you long enough.
A
Violet, I. I don't understand. How could they do this to you?
B
They thought it would help keep everyone alive. Maybe it did. For a while.
A
All these years, they. They just.
B
I know. But it kept you safe. Kept you alive, too.
A
I. I should have gotten here soon. I'm. I'm so sorry, Violet.
B
No. You're right on time, Jack. Exactly when I needed you.
A
Does it hurt?
B
It did. At first, it was like fire every second. But after a few years, you stopped noticing. It just becomes normal. The pain doesn't go away. You just forget what it felt like not to have it. Can you stay for just a little bit? I just want to see your face a little longer.
A
I'm not going anywhere. I'm so sorry.
B
Hey, none of that. You're ruining the moment.
A
Yeah. Yeah, I have a habit of that, don't I?
B
Only sometimes.
A
I. I just don't understand. Why. Why would they do this to you?
B
It wasn't meant to be like this. I was just support. Someone to keep the workers calm, focused, steady during their time in the bunkers. They said I had a calming effect. But then they noticed the people I worked with didn't break. Their bunkers held. I was the only one where things worked. They couldn't afford to lose me. They even promoted me a few times, Told me I was essential, that I was keeping the system alive. And I believed them. Because I saw it working. I liked it. Helping people. Knowing I was making a difference, that others were safe because I was there. But I didn't know this was their plan, not until it was too late.
A
So they built the whole system around you. Turned you into some kind of control unit.
B
More like an anchor. They figured out I was somehow stabilizing the other sites when I was awake. When I was connected, things stayed calm. When I wasn't, well, you saw what happened.
A
So you could sense the other bunkers?
B
Not exactly. I couldn't see them, couldn't control them, but I could feel them. Like distant echoes. If they got chaotic, if something shifted. I felt it in my bones. Literally.
A
Oh, God. I'm so sorry, Jack.
B
You're here now. That's all that matters. You know, I didn't think I'd ever see another face again, Let alone yours.
A
Yeah, it's. It's pretty weird, right? I actually didn't think I'd ever get a chance to meet you.
B
Well, I always knew you'd try. Even when I told you not to.
A
You know me too well.
B
Yeah, unfortunately, Jack, there's a reason I brought you here. When I told you to stop looking for me, I meant that. I didn't want you to end up here. Not like this. Those coordinates, that wasn't me. They distorted my voice, turned it into something else. They knew you'd chase it to the end. Knew you wouldn't let it go. You were baited, Jack. They need you for something, same as me. But once I knew you were here, I asked to See you. That part was real. Because I'm done being used. By them. By this place. And if it has to end, I want it to end on my terms. I asked for you because I knew you'd do what no one else here would. I didn't want you to see me like this, but I'd rather it be you. I need you to help me leave this place for good.
A
What? What do you mean?
B
I've held on long enough. Whatever they did to me, it's falling apart. The procedure, it started failing the moment you escaped Bunker eight. They thought I could hold the system together, but I couldn't. Not forever.
A
So it started falling apart the second I left. They put all of it on you. You were never supposed to carry that alone. If I'd known. God, Violet. I never would have left.
B
No. But it was never going to last. They wanted a fix, but this isn't the kind of thing you can fix.
A
Violet, please. I just found you.
B
You know what's strange? The moment you left, when you triggered the core, everything shifted. I felt it all at once, like something deep inside was breaking open. I knew that was the start of the end for me.
A
So you knew. You knew it would all fall apart the moment I left.
B
Nothing lasts forever, Jack.
A
I'm sorry that it took me so long to find you. I should have brought some pierogies.
B
Yeah, that would have been nice. You came exactly when you needed to. This us meeting like this, it's supposed to happen. Listen, I don't think we'll ever see each other again after this. I wish it was different, but this isn't the end for you, Jack. It's just the start for you.
A
What? What are you saying?
B
You'll understand soon. Everything we've been through, it's just a piece. You have so much more ahead.
A
Wait, Violet, hold on. Just. Just give me time, okay? Just let me try to fix this. Okay?
B
Jack. It's okay. I'm ready now. You were the last thing I needed to see. And now I need you to help me leave.
A
I don't think I can.
B
You can. I trust you. I always have. Please, Jack. Help me rest.
A
I'm so sorry, Violet.
B
Don't be. I chose this. Just stay with me, okay?
A
Okay. A small panel slides out from the side of the structure. One word on the screen. Terminate. No button, just a lever. Red. Simple. Final. I just have to pull it, then, and she'll be gone. That's it? That's what it's come down to? After everything we've been through, I finally found her. And now. And now I have to be the one to end it. She's barely breathing. Her hands cold in mind. But she's still here. I look at her one more time. Her eyes are closed, still holding on, waiting. I grip the lever and I pull. It's okay, Violet. I'm right here. I'm right here. Jack. What the hell did you do? Answer me. Do you have any idea what you've done? I did exactly what she asked me to do. You just killed the only thing holding this place together. She wasn't a thing. She was Violet. And you turned her into this. And now she's gone. You've taken everything from me. I now know what I have to do. I'm gonna end all this. All of it. And this time, I don't care what it costs. How? Everything's falling apart. The whole system's overloading. Take me back. Back where? Bunker eight? Are you insane? That place is still there. The Core sent me back once before. It can do it again. Take me back to Bunker eight. This has been Bunker eight, created and written by Dean Smyth. Before the credits roll, here's a quick ad. It really helps support the show so we can keep telling these stories. Stay tuned.
