Medic
Ah, good. I see you're still alive.
Jack
Billy, What are you doing?
Medic
Maddox did a number on your jaw. If it's cracked and it goes untreated, it'll get infected. It's not cracked, but it is badly bruised.
Jack
I'm fine.
Medic
You can talk, so that's something. But I need you to hold still. Broken nose. Just had to set it right,
Jack
Right?
Medic
Yeah. You're welcome.
Jack
How's it looking out there?
Medic
It's getting worse.
Jack
Shit. You gonna tell me what you meant?
Medic
About what?
Jack
Don't play fucking stupid. End off your last visit. You said you could get me to bunk eight.
Medic
I did. And I meant it. But I want to know why you've got everybody in the building wanting you dead and you're still trying to get back there. There must be something.
Jack
Ah, fuck. Inside Bunker eight. There's. There's something in there called the core.
Medic
The core?
Jack
It's. It's hard to explain. It's at the center of Bunker eight. Deep below everything else. It's what made the bunker what it was. Moved me through time once, pulled me back to 1952. I think I can do it again.
Medic
You think?
Jack
Yes. The bunker collapsed. But the core didn't. And I know it's still active. I can flip, feel it. I know that sounds insane, but I don't have a better word for it. It's just sitting there, waiting.
Medic
Doesn't sound insane. Sounds like you've been through something most people wouldn't survive. When it pulled you through, did the core give you a choice or did
Jack
it just take you? What do you mean?
Medic
I mean, things like that. Things with that kind of power,
Jack
they
Medic
usually operate on some kind of exchange. They don't just give. There's always a cost. Something they need from the person on the other end. So did it ask for something or did it just grab you Wait, what?
Jack
Most medics don't really ask questions like that.
Medic
I read a lot. This place has files on everything. If you know where to look. Most people don't bother. I'm not most people.
Jack
Right. I. I really don't know. Violet was wired into the whole thing by then. So when it reached for me, part of me wants to believe that. That it was her. That she did it on purpose. I just don't know if that's the truth or. Or if it was something else entirely.
Medic
Violet.
Jack
Yeah, that was her name.
Medic
Violet. Pretty named. What was she like?
Jack
She was. She was good. The thing is, nobody told me about her. The whole brief in the handover, none of it mentioned her once. Solo post, long rotation. Just me. Then I'm barely through the door on day one, and this voice comes through the comms. Relaxed, like it was the most normal thing. Just. Just asking if I was okay.
Medic
And they just left that out? Didn't think to mention it?
Jack
No. I kept my guard up, though. Gave her nothing. But she just kept showing up anyway. Every day. No agenda, not pushing for anything, just. Just checking in. And I don't know when it changed, but at some point, I started waiting for it.
Medic
She grew on you.
Jack
Yeah, she did. I thought she was just some girl doing her job, you know, monitoring, support, whatever Atlas had her doing. I had no idea what she actually was. What they'd done to her.
Medic
And she'd been down in that chamber for 60 years by then.
Jack
Yeah. 60 years of people coming through that bunker, and nobody helped her. But they were just doing what they were ordered, weren't they? Same as I was supposed to. The solo post, the follow orders. Don't look too hard at what's underneath. I just didn't manage that last part.
Medic
I'm guessing the others didn't go through what you went through.
Jack
Yeah, maybe.
Medic
Did she ever talk about what she was before Atlas got to her?
Jack
What do you mean, what she was?
Medic
I mean, someone doesn't survive what she survived unless there's something fundamentally different about them. Atlas didn't pick her at random.
Jack
Why do you want to know all this?
Medic
Because I'm a medic. And from a medical standpoint, someone surviving that long inside a system like that shouldn't be possible. The body doesn't work like that. So either Atlas did something to her, or she was already something different before Atlas got their hands on her. That interests me.
Jack
That's a lot of interest for someone who's just here to keep me alive.
Medic
That's literally what a medic is. Curious about how people work. What happened to her in the end, the. No, Jack. I'm just.
Jack
Who the hell do you think you are? I've known you for five minutes. I'm not telling you shit. So whatever you're after, you can off with it.
Medic
I'll come back when it's time, I'll tell you the plan. I can't bloody wait until then. Don't do anything stupid.
Jack
I'm chained to a chair.
Medic
No. Do it anyway.

Maddox
Kill the alarm.
Boost Mobile Announcer
Sir, Protocol states.
Maddox
I know what protocol states. Kill them. Amira, report.
Amirah Harper
I'll start with what we know. It's not much and none of it's good.
Maddox
Just tell me what we're looking at.
Amirah Harper
Bunker five. The Alps. We've re established partial contact with the surface team. The containment team inside the facility has pulled back. They can't operate there anymore.
Maddox
Why not?
Amirah Harper
Whatever was generating those tapes has destabilized. It's bleeding out into the facility itself. The whole site is experiencing temporal distortions, accelerating. Time is moving at different speeds in different sections. It's not uniform. It's chaotic. One team entered a corridor on sub level 2 and emerged on the other side having aged weeks. Their hair, their nails. Muscle deterioration, weeks of biological aging and the time it took to walk 40
Maddox
meters and the other sections running in reverse.
Amirah Harper
Equipment deteriorating. Concrete crumbling. Structural supports rusting through as if decades are passing in hours. One section of the facility is aging forward, another is aging backward. And the boundaries between them are shifting. You can't map it, you can't predict it. You walk through a door and you don't know if you're going to come out the other side the same age you went in.
Maddox
Can we seal it?
Amirah Harper
We can seal the surface access, but the distortions are spreading outward. If they reach the perimeter. We're not containing them with a door.
Maddox
How long?
Amirah Harper
Days. Maybe less. There's no precedent for this. The models don't account for temporal decay at this rate.
Maddox
What about bunker three?
Amirah Harper
Critical. The well has been fully compromised. Whatever was holding it in check is gone. The entities, the amalgamations, the fused bodies, they're not contained anymore. They flooded the lower levels of the facility.
Maddox
The facility is underwater? Deep ocean it is.
Amirah Harper
And most of the entities that breached the lower levels drowned. The pressure in the water did what our weapons couldn't. The facility structural integrity is failing. It's taking on water across multiple levels. The remaining crew have evacuated to the surface support vessel. They're reporting the facility is lost.
Maddox
What about the well itself?
Amirah Harper
Still active, still producing. With no containment in place and the facility flooding, Whatever comes out of that well now goes straight into the ocean.
Maddox
Christ. What about bunkers 2 and 7?
Amirah Harper
Nothing. Complete radio silence. No signal on any frequency. No automated status updates. No emergency beacons. They went dark when the cascades started and they haven't come back.
Maddox
That's 48 hours.
Amirah Harper
48 hours? Either the communications infrastructure has been destroyed or there's no one left to transmit.
Maddox
Can we get eyes on them?
Amirah Harper
Bunker two is remote landlocked. We could get a team there in 12 hours, but I wouldn't recommend sending anyone in blind. Bunker 7. I don't even know where to start. We don't have the resources for a recon operation right now. Not with everything else.
Maddox
And bunker 8?
Amirah Harper
The surface facility is collapsed. Has been since the incident. But the deep level sensors are still transmitting.
Maddox
Still?
Amirah Harper
Yes, and the readings don't make sense. The core is generating energy signatures that don't match anything we have on record. The output is increasing slowly but consistently. Whatever is down there is active and it's building.
Maddox
Building toward what?
Amirah Harper
I don't know. Nobody does. The core was never fully understood, even when the facility was operational. Now that the catalyst is gone and the containment framework has collapsed, it could be anything.
Maddox
What about us? What's happening below our feet?
Amirah Harper
That's the part I don't like. The bulkheads are holding, but the specimens have gone quiet.
Maddox
Quiet?
Amirah Harper
About an hour ago, the screaming stopped. Movement sensors on sub levels 6 through 9 are reading nothing. No impacts on the bulkheads, no vibration, no sound. Nothing.
Maddox
So they're dead.
Amirah Harper
They're not dead. Biological sensors are still showing active signatures. Whatever's down there is alive. It's just not moving, not making a sound.
Maddox
So what are they doing?
Amirah Harper
I don't know. And that's what worries me. These things haven't stopped screaming since we first pulled them out of Bunker three. Not once through containment, through the breach, through the fusing constant, and now silence. We can't see past the bulkheads. We have no cameras operational on those levels. We're staring at a sealed door, listening to nothing. And I have no idea what's on the other side of it anymore.
Maddox
What are our options?
Amirah Harper
We flood the sublevels, kill the power, seal the vents and pump them full of seawater or inert gas. It might slow them down. It might not. We don't know what kills these things because every time we think we've stopped them, they changed.
Maddox
Do it. Flood everything below level six. If it buys us time, it's worth it.
Amirah Harper
We've still got reports of people stranded down there.
Maddox
I said do it. We're not using those levels anymore. They are. Drown them.
Amirah Harper
I'll give the order.
Maddox
How long have we got before this whole network is gone?
Amirah Harper
If the distortions in Bunker 5 reach the surface, we lose the outside within the week. Bunker 3 is already gone. Two sites are dark and probably lost. And whatever's happening at Bunker eight is accelerating a number. If nothing changes, we're looking at full network collapse inside of five days. After that, there's nothing between these things in the outside world.
Maddox
Then something needs to change.
Amirah Harper
What do you suggest? Because I've been running scenarios for 12 hours and every single one of them ends the same way.
Maddox
You're the scientist. Find one that doesn't, and you're the soldier.
Amirah Harper
You can't shoot your way out of temporal distortions. You can't bomb a well that produces things from across time. This isn't a military problem anymore.
Maddox
Everything is a military problem. When enough people start dying, then Jack
Amirah Harper
is the only card left on the table.
Boost Mobile Announcer
Incoming emergency Transmission. Monitoring Station 4. That's near the Bunker 3 site.
Amirah Harper
Put it through.
Boost Mobile Announcer
This is Station 4, requesting immediate response. We have a situation on shore. Repeat, on shore. Multiple entities have emerged from the water approximately 10 kilometers south of the facility. They are on land. They are moving toward the town. Their bodies diffused tissue. It hardened. They survived the water, they survived the pressure. They are not stopping.
We've lost transmission signals. Gone.
Amirah Harper
This is the first time we've reached civilians. Everything until now has been inside the network. Contained. This is. This is outside.
Maddox
How many people in that town?
Boost Mobile Announcer
Approximately 6,000, sir.
Maddox
Full termination protocol. Carpet bomb the entire coastal area.
Amirah Harper
What?
Maddox
You heard me. Level the town. Everything within a five kilometer radius of that coastline. Nothing walks out.
Amirah Harper
There are thousands of people in that town.
Maddox
And if those things spread inland, it'll be millions. You want to save who you can save or you want to watch this go global?
Amirah Harper
We could evacuate, get people out before.
Maddox
Evacuate to where? Those things are already in the streets. You heard the transmissions. It's happening now.
Amirah Harper
Send a containment team. We have protocols for.
Maddox
Containment teams have already failed. Standard weapons don't work. You said it yourself, they're adapting. Their biology is changing. Every minute we stand here talking about it, the radius grows. Every minute, more of those things come out of the water and more people die.
Amirah Harper
There could be survivors.
Maddox
There will be no survivors if this spreads. 6,000 people, or 6 million. Contact Air Command. Authorize full termination protocol on the coastal zone. 5 km radius. Level everything. Confirm when assets are in the air.
Boost Mobile Announcer
Yes, sir.
Amirah Harper
You didn't even hesitate, State.
Maddox
No, I didn't.
Amirah Harper
6,000 people.
Maddox
I heard the number.
Amirah Harper
And that's it. That's how it works.
Maddox
That's exactly how it works. That's how it's always worked. You just never had to watch it happen before.
Boost Mobile Announcer
Sir, assets are in the air. Closing in on target. Impact confirmed. Target area neutralized.
Maddox
Confirmed.
Jack
You look worse than I do. What happened?
Amirah Harper
Bunker 3. The entities from the well, they reached the surface.
Jack
What? You said most of them drowned.
Amirah Harper
Most did. Some didn't. Some of them adapted, changed. Came out of the ocean near a coastal town.
Jack
Shit. What happened? Amira? What happened to the town? How many?
Amirah Harper
6,000, give or take. Nothing to say.
Jack
What? What do you want me to say?
Amirah Harper
I don't know. I thought he'd have something. You always have something.
Jack
I don't.
Amirah Harper
If we took you back to Bunker Eight, what do you think would happen?
Jack
I. I don't know.
Amirah Harper
Answer the question.
Jack
I can't promise you anything. I don't know if it'll even let me through or just finish what it started. But it responds to me. That's real. That's something. That's not reassuring, it's not meant to be. But whatever's down there pulled me through time. I think I can do it again. You think it's more than what you've got?
Amirah Harper
Maddox has no plan. He has bombs and bulkheads and neither of those are going to stop what's coming. You're the only person in this building offering anything close to an answer. So, yes, Jack, I'm considering it.
