Hey, Isabella, did you see baseball hall of Famer Jim Palmer? He's like, 80. Brady. What is he, 80? 80.
Brady
80 years old.
Katie Nolan
I got it right. 80 years old. Ate his first chicken wing of his life on Thursday live on air during the Orioles game against the Astros.
Isabella
Good for him.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. I mean, what.
Isabella
That's crazy. And I would say 80 years old is probably the worst time to try
Katie Nolan
to get exactly my thoughts. It's like, if you're going to wait this long now, you might as well just go your whole life without one because it's not like you' I wouldn't say teeth, strength. Oh, no.
Isabella
I was worried about his health.
Katie Nolan
Like, in the sense that a chicken wing is bad for you.
Isabella
Yeah. Like, it's super greasy.
Katie Nolan
If I get to 80, I'm doing greasy food and soda the rest of the way.
Isabella
Okay.
Katie Nolan
There's no chance I'm, like, really learning to love quinoa at 80. At that point, I'll eat what I can eat. It's cheeseburgers and Dr. Pepper all the way down.
Isabella
That's true. And a pack of cigarettes. Why not?
Katie Nolan
Yes. A pack a day, at least. But kids don't do it. Here's what he had to say. Here was his review. It's a lot of skin. That's all I can tell you. They're greasy, by the way. Can't eat them with a microphone. And although he said he liked it, it took him the whole half inning to eat a single one.
Isabella
What?
Katie Nolan
A half inning? He's 80. He's got. He's got a huge. Yeah, but it's so delicious.
Isabella
You can't stop how does that think
Brady
if you've never eaten a wing before? There's a lot of intricacies.
Katie Nolan
Well, do you think he had a flat or a drum? They must have given him a drum.
Brady
I think he had a flat.
Katie Nolan
A flat. Then they're asking him to do that complicated tongue thing.
Brady
Have to go back and check the tape.
Isabella
Yeah, you got to go in between.
Katie Nolan
Where you going? To tongue punch the meat to get it out. We all know what I'm talking about. Let's be adults.
Isabella
Okay.
Katie Nolan
Hello and welcome to Casuals sports podcast. That's here. Okay, it's here. It's hosted by a lady who really loves Boston sports, so it could have, should have probably taken the day off. But it is a sports podcast for a casual fan to help keep you caught up on everything going on in sports, even if that something brings me great misery, which today it does, which I'm sure some people are really enjoying. I'm Katie Nolan, the host, joined today by my casualties. It's the production crew here at Sirius xm. We have Isabella, our sports newbie. Hello. We have Chris, our master editor.
Chris
What's up?
Katie Nolan
And Brady in the bottom corner for me today. Different, different zoom setup, new vibe.
Brady
Let's see how it feels.
Katie Nolan
Crazy. I'm used to Brady's usually a top left because you must understand, I never see except Isabella, who's in the other room. I don't ever get to see these people except in these tiny boxes on the screen like Hollywood Squares. And Brady's in a completely different spot today. I wonder if this changes anything up for us. Here's how you can get a hold of us. Email Casuals with Katie nolan gmail dot com. Our voicemail is 646-810-0043 on IG and Tik Tok. We are at Casuals, the podcast. We got a lot of good voicemail stuff this week that we will be splicing interspersing throughout the podcast content that we have coming at you. We're going to talk Kentucky Derby, which ended up actually being the highlight of my sports weekend. I had a lovely time watching the Kentucky Derby. I never would have guessed and never would have thought maybe it's just because of how bad everything else sounds. Sucked. Isabelle, you got that lens clean. You good girl.
Isabella
Yeah. You didn't have to address it.
Katie Nolan
Well, I guess we'd see it. I don't know. We got the Kentucky Derby. There's a mascot birthday party that I need to talk to you about. Okay. This is also maybe a highlight of the weekend. For me. But again, that's given the way my diet sports diet went. We've got quarterbacks throwing out first pitches and whether or not that's a good idea. But of course, of course, of course. First we have to talk about the, the NBA and the NHL playoffs. What I like about the postseasons happening at the. At the same time. So we're in the NHL postseason. We are in the NBA postseason, at least at the beginning. The rounds are pretty synced. So we kind of wrapped up round one this past weekend in both the NBA and NHL postseason. And so we had to figure out a way to present this here on the show. And what we came up with was the good, the bad and the Missoula. So we're gonna first hit you with the NBA playoffs, then we'll do the NHL playoffs and I'll also make sure that we will spin this forward and let you guys know round two matchups to look for if you're just now dipping your toe into the postseason. So let's start in real quick.
Isabella
Missoula is the Celtics coach.
Katie Nolan
Okay.
Isabella
I just wanted to.
Katie Nolan
And so. And so you understand the conceit of it being good and then it's bad and then it's Missoula. Like weird. Yeah. Well, we'll get to it. Let's start with the good. We're going to start with the NBA postseason in the good. Brady's choice, and it's probably the Right one was 41 year old LeBron carrying the Lakers into the semis. LeBron James becomes. Is this the semis aren't. Isn't it?
Chris
Wouldn't it be the Eastern Conference semis?
Katie Nolan
Eastern conference semifinals. LeBron James became the oldest player to lead their team in scoring in a playoff series, passing Kareem Abdul Jabbar. The Lakers defeated the rockets 98, 78. Man, I thought for a second the Rockets were going to be able to, to pull it off and do it, but I was like super wrong because that didn't happen and Kevin Durant didn't play. So the Rockets, as I take it from their fans who have called into fan service, they were put out of their misery by LeBron. By old LeBron and his son. So it's like new LeBron. So there's really just no break from LeBron. Somebody I saw someone tweet like, imagine if you're playing like rec league basketball and this 41 year old guy keeps balling on you, but when he subs out, his sun subs in and you're just like, how annoyed you would be at that situation. The Lakers now will go on to face the Thunder, right? And they swept the suns in the first round. That game one will be Tuesday night, 8:30 Eastern. So it hasn't happened yet. A lot of these games, as always, you guys will have happened where you're listening to it, but have not happened where we're recording it.
Brady
So this is a quick one. Like it's just simple as gotta root for the old guy. Like it's fun watching LeBron do this in the late stage that no one else has ever done before. And especially with Luca hurt and LeBron carrying it all on his shoulders and just like him and his son throwing lobs to each other is one of the coolest things we'll ever experience. Yeah, like just knowing like being there with your child doing something so historic and like Bronnie's useful and LeBron is taking it over. Like this is 10 years ago. Really awesome to watch.
Chris
Yeah, I hate the Lakers and I still like watching this. I, I made a decision. I think it was during the 2013 playoffs maybe when the Celtics were facing off against Miami and LeBron was just doing some incredible things. I might have been getting the year wrong, but it was around about that period of time where I decided that I just can no longer hate LeBron James and that I need to be there for the ride. And I think more people need to do this. When you see a generational talent just
Katie Nolan
watching basketball and we're alive at the same time as this, it's the way I feel about Shohei. It's like you guys just have to accept it and appreciate it.
Chris
Enjoy the ride, man. Just stop hating. Just enjoy what you're seeing. 41 year old dude still balling out.
Katie Nolan
It's also kind of amazing. He's had the spotlight on him since he was in high school. And the only real controversy, quote unquote, that he ever really got caught in. Yeah, it was a decision and it was just him being kind of cringy. And I'd say all the things he's bumped into have just been him being kind of cringy. Cringy. A little bit of like a cringy uncle, which at this point like made decision.
Isabella
Was it that social media thing where he was like, I'm gonna have a.
Chris
My talents to South Beach.
Katie Nolan
So she's. I think you're thinking of the. Was it like VSOP or something? There was like a, the, the, the second decision that he teased that ended up just being a liquor partnership. But Isabella, it was a call back essentially to the original decision, which was where he was going to go in free agency. And it like they made it a whole special. And it was. It was a lot. And so we kind of. But like nothing other than that. It's like to have been your biggest crime.
Isabella
Cringe.
Katie Nolan
Exactly. Exactly. Who among us is in a little cringe Sometimes the only.
Brady
What are the other comps for that? Like. Like being that famous for that long since you were in high school.
Chris
Is Bryce Harper the same Even though he hasn't sort of lived up to the Heights as LeBron? It's still two names, right?
Brady
Bryce Harper and Tiger Woods. You.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Brady
And like Bryce is a little younger. He's still in it. But yeah, Bryce has been very controversy free. And then Tiger woods has been. Tiger Woods.
Katie Nolan
Was Bryce. Clown question. Was that Bryce Harper?
Brady
Yeah, clown coin. Someone asked him if he was gonna have a drink because he was in Toronto and the drinking age was under 21. And he said, that's a clown question, bro.
Katie Nolan
Which isn't he Mormon? So I feel like that would be the reason that he didn't have a drink. Um, yeah. So I just. I don't know the good. You're right. It should be LeBron. But I did want to do an honorable mention here. Now, the Raptors obviously went on to lose game seven. This was. The annoying thing is that everybody else seemed to. It looked like they were going to get upset and then they didn't. Except for the one that we'll get to the NBA Missoula in this segment. But the Toronto. The Raptors had a game six moment that was so awesome, so fantastic. RJ Barrett hitting that game winning three with less than two seconds left in overtime. It was like shades of Kawhi when he played with the. With the Raptors against the Sixers. It looked exactly like Halliburton's shot against the Knicks. It like bounced off the rim. It went like two point. I'm just pulling this number out of my butt, but it was like 2.1 meters into the air.
Isabella
It went two Brady's up in the air.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, it went like way up in the air. And then like this dramatic moment, it falls through the hoop. The place goes nuts. And the reason I wanted to bring it up is because I had this like, philosophical moment about edits on social media this weekend where I realized that, like, a really good edit is like storytelling. It's like. It's like cinema. Because for those who don't know, an edit is like when you take a highlight or something. It really covers a number of things, but in this context, it'd be like you take a highlight and you show the different angles. You put it to music so that it like the momentous thing happens at a momentous point in the music. You can slow down footage. You can whatever. It just basically makes a small film that you watch on social media that tells a story. And watching. There was this edit by their username is Black Dragon Roll. I was watching that edit and I was like, damn, this is sick. It shows like the ball. The. The slow moment of like everyone waiting to see if it's gonna go in the ball going in. It cuts to like 4 different fan reaction close up faces. And it also then cuts to RJ Barrett, like walking away ice cold. It was sick. It like showed the way it happened across the. It showed like the clock and the way that the players on the court reacted. And I just feel like we're not giving edits enough credit for how cool they can be when it comes to, like sports. Stell storytelling, Stell touring. Sometimes it's too much words. You know what I mean? Anyway, they go on to lose to the Cavs, but it was pretty cool in game six when we all had hope and we felt like maybe something was going to happen. I thought that was pretty cool. Okay, the bad in the NBA. Speaking of somebody who looked like maybe they were going to upset a team and then didn't. The Magic. The Orlando Magic.
Isabella
Woof.
Katie Nolan
Just a gigantic uppercase woof to the Orlando Magic. They were up 3:1 on the Pistons and then ended up losing in seven games. Now the Orlando Magic were the eight seed they had to play in to get into the postseason. Nobody thought they would take on the number one Detroit Pistons and. And maybe take them down. But it was looking there for a second like the Pistons were going to blow it. And then like I said, this is the bad. So game six was like really, really bad for Orlando. It was just historically bad. It was at home. They were. They had at one point a 24 point lead. And then they just blew it. They blew it. Then they lost six, and then obviously they lost seven, and now their season is finished. At one point during game six, they missed 23 straight shots.
Brady
It's a lot.
Katie Nolan
It is a lot. I will say it, Chris. It did feel like that happened to the Celtics. I know that. Maybe not 23 in a row, but there were certain points. It felt like that many shots missed.
Chris
It certainly did.
Katie Nolan
And we'll get to that in a second. But I Do want to point out during Game 6 when they blew that lead, Isabella. It was a home game. There was a little girl at the game in Orlando that got caught on the broadcast yelling at the Orlando Magic. Do we have that clip? Let's take a listen. Pistons have their biggest lead tonight.
Chris
Get it together.
Isabella
Oh, I feel you.
Katie Nolan
I. She's so right.
Isabella
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
And they didn't listen. Once again, they did not listen. Absolutely brutal.
Isabella
One of my go to sayings when a player pisses me off across the sports is I go, what are you doing for me?
Katie Nolan
I love that. I love that.
Isabella
So right now, for me, it's Marcus Semian. He's called Marcus. Piss me off, Semian.
Katie Nolan
I love this. I mean, I really do. When we get back into baseball, I feel like we should air some of this out. I love this. You've been watching Mets games. I have.
Isabella
So get it together.
Katie Nolan
I mean, Marcus Simeon does sometimes have really slow starts to seasons, doesn't he? I feel like that happened in Texas. Yeah. The Magic went on to lose game seven, I think I already said, but it was 116 to 94. And then it was either. Was it today, Monday, or did this happen after the game yesterday that they fired their head coach. They fired Jamal Mosley. He had led the Magic to three straight playoff berths, but in each of those series, his team lost in the first round. Now Detroit, they will move on to play Cleveland in game one being Tuesday, I think Tuesday at 7 Eastern. While we're doing bad though, I will say Detroit's got some sort of a lockout cable situation happening. I saw people online talking about how this is Detroit's first home game seven in however long and people in Detroit couldn't watch it because Xfinity local ABC affiliate wxyz, which I think we can all agree is the best name for your affiliate, wxyz, they got the best one.
Chris
That is awesome.
Katie Nolan
And they're having some sort of a dispute with Comcast Xfinity over carrier fees, which. Look, I pretend to understand this. I know at one point I did. And. And then I've had to delete that knowledge to make room for other stuff. But I saw people complaining about it online. Then I saw other people saying, well, just use an antenna. Everybody gets access to abc, NBC, Fox. And while I know that to be true, technically, I wanted to ask the casualties, you have any idea how to use an antenna?
Brady
I do because Emmett Smith left one at our set on super bowl and I have it plugged in upstairs in my house.
Katie Nolan
Okay. And Truly. And what was it called again? God damn it. It's not TiVo and it's not Fubo, but it's like Togo or like.
Brady
What is it called? I have the app and it does work if I want to watch broadcast tv. And I can't remember what it's called, but thank you, Emmett, for leaving it there.
Katie Nolan
I love that it fit in your suitcase.
Brady
Honestly can't find. What is it called?
Katie Nolan
Gobo. It's one of those. You know what I mean?
Brady
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
People always say just use an antenna. And so I was like, what would you actually do? Because these days, for the last, I don't know, almost 10 years, tableau.
Brady
Thank you, Emmett.
Katie Nolan
T A B L O. You would just used to just be able to hit TV and you would go to like four or five or seven is what it was in Boston. I don't know. And now those channels just go like louder than you've ever heard. And so I went to this, I tried to look into this a little further and I found there's a website called the Free TV Project.org that helps you figure out how to watch the TV that is technically available to you for free. And it sounds cool, but a lot of it is like, do you own a. What did you just say it was called?
Brady
Tableau.
Katie Nolan
Tableau. And if the answer is no, then you have to like go to another website to apply for an antenna. And the type of antenna of depends on where you're from. It used to just be you would just go like basic cable. And now it's kind of. It takes a lot. But I will say that game Tuesday at 7 is the first game. I don't know if you'll run into that same. I don't know if it's on Amazon or something. But if you're in Detroit and you're going through this issue, which by the way started on April 1, so a lot of their customers were like, is this an April Fool's day joke? Where's ABC? Just go to try that. Try the free TV project.org and see. So anyway, that was the good and the bad. And all I'm doing is delaying the role of having to get to the Missoula of the NBA postseason. Now, of course, the Missoula would be the Boston Celtics. Chris's Boston Celtics.
Isabella
Not false.
Katie Nolan
Chris's Boston Celtics lost game seven to the 76ers. They were the two seed, meaning the Sixers were what, the seven.
Chris
Correct.
Katie Nolan
They had a three one series lead and they had a double digit second half. Lead in game five. Before this series, the Celtics. Just a couple, just some stats for you before we get into the emotions of it all. Before this series, the Celtics were 32.0when leading 31 in a series they had never lost. And the 76ers were 0 and 18 when down 31 in a series they'd only lost. Jayson Tatum did not play in Game seven due to knee tightness. Chris, I'd really like to spend a lot of time here. We found this out. It felt like 30 minutes before the game. I'm sure it was more than that. Your reaction when you heard the news?
Chris
Well, initially, I wasn't too, too worried because, firstly, we survived 75% of the season without Jason Tatum and still look like a very good team. So we knew what this team was capable of even without Jayson Tatum in the lineup. And secondly, the way that he had played the previous two games, Game 5 and Game 6, sort of led me to believe that maybe it would have been good to go away from that style of basketball, which was very ISO heavy. It was a lot of Jayson Tatum and a lot of Jalen Brown going one on one, sort of going away from the style of basketball that got Celtics to where they were in the postseason to begin with. Right. So even though I would absolutely have loved Jayson Tatum to have played in that game, and if you give me the choice, I would have said I wanted him to play. I didn't think that it was going to end as badly as it did. And if you have a look at the starting lineup, this is sort of where the lack of depth that we thought we had coming into the season was really exposed, where a lot of the. The role players who had had great seasons, just. It didn't click for him in the postseason. We only had two players in our starting lineup in Game 7 that had started in Game 1, which was that historic blowout that we had against the 76ers. It was Jalen Brown and Derrick White. They were the only two starters that started Game one and Game seven. And so when you have that lack of consistency and you have that lack of depth, it's. It's sort of hard to win games. But the way I think you have to look at it as a Celtics fan, firstly, it's. It's devastating and it's. It's sort of incomprehensible that we would lose the series after being up 3:1 and being up double digits in the second half. If you had told us, Katie, at the start of the season, that we would be in this position and losing game seven of the first round of the playoffs. We would have taken that a hundred out of 100 times. We weren't expected to do anything this season. We lost the first three games.
Katie Nolan
The issue is the way Tatum comes back and everyone's like, whoa, a remarkable timeline for this injury. Nobody expected this at all. Why is he playing if he's not fully like, why, why play? Why not go, hey, I know you could play, but let's take it easy on you? Because we weren't planning. We were doing fine without you, and we weren't planning on you being back anyway yet. So it's like to see him come down to game seven where you just go, like, just play one more game.
Chris
But he sort of said after the game that it was a minor miracle that he got through this much of the season, this much of his return before sort of having a flare up. Yeah, you're coming back from major. A major injury. But there's sort of two reasons to bring him back. One, he is healthy enough to come back. The doctors clear him and say that he's not at any greater chance of re injuring the. The Achilles. The second one is to get him some game time in the lead up to the next season. And actually, I guess the third one would be, you think that you're going to win the NBA Finals this year and having Jason Tatum on your team gives you a better chance of doing that than without. So there were three reasons to give him a lot of game time. In hindsight, maybe if they reduced his average game time down five minutes, that would have.
Katie Nolan
I don't care for your logic. I just feel like being upset. I feel like being upset that he came back from an injury early and then they'd sit him for game seven. And you're like, well, just play and let's see. Because I think we need you. And then turns out we did because we absolutely stink. And it's frustrating because unfairly to the Celtics, I put a lot of eggs in the basket because I saw a lot of people being like, well, the Pistons aren't a real number one. We all think the Celtics are going to come out of the East. And I got too comfortable going. I don't got to worry about them. And then I do have to worry about them. And so nobody feels bad for Boston fans. I know that. I actually remember I told you guys last season that my friend Ian Carmel asked me at the last second he needed a replacement for somebody who had dropped out of his Fantasy basketball league. And I was like, okay, guys, I'm playing fantasy basketball. And I had no idea what I was doing. And I don't even know where I finished. I don't think I ever set my lineup. But I was in a group chat of people that would text a lot about basketball. And now I'm not deep into basketball like that. So no offense to them, but I always had the notifications on that one muted. I would check in. They were usually talking about stuff I didn't know about. And so right after the Celtics lost, that starts blowing up. And somebody in there that. Whose name I only have saved because they were one of the first people when I joined the group chat to say who they were. So I saved their name and their number. His name's Dan. He texted. Just really satisfying to see the Celtics self immolate. I like that they started to come back. Makes this all so much tastier. And. And I'd been looking for a reason, so I just left. So it just. The next message after that one is Katie Nolan left the conversation. So hopefully everybody there knows that I was, you know, just joking, but I'm free. We got a voicemail from Kelsey in New Hampshire. She's a frequent caller to. To Fan Service, the radio show over on Mad Dog sports radio, channel 82, which you can listen to every Monday through Friday noon to 1 Eastern. But she left us a voicemail and some context. I think what we knew going into this. Isabella, remember she said that she was on a trip, I think with her boyfriend's family, and they are not a basketball family. Yeah. So she was trying to get everybody into the basketball. She had them watching some games. So I imagine this isn't a happy voicemail, but let's take a listen. Hey, it's Kelsey from New Hampshire, and I'm still on my family vacation, and I rallied my boyfriend's family to watch the Celtics game seven, and I just watched them lose. And I'm on the deck and I'm watching from the window the 76ers win. And this really stinks, you guys. This really stinks. And so I'm drinking a drink out on the porch, watching my team lose. Go sports. Love you. Mean it. Love you, Mina. Kelsey, this does ask the question. Joe Missoula, the coach that everybody loves to laugh at, his funny little sound bites some off the top of my head. Chris, you got any off the top of your head? The time that he said something about somebody asked if he had, like, met the king and queen, and he was Like Jesus Christ.
Chris
And people were like, Jesus, Mary and Joseph. Have you met the royal family in Boston? And he blank stared Jesus, Mary and Joseph. The best one was running a marathon. He could do the marathon. Whether he could do. Whether he could run a marathon. And his quote was, I would just run until I died.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. And he's just kind of like this guy. I also feel like, poor Zingis. Didn't he like, yell at Porzingis during. When he was hurt?
Chris
I like watching him bleed.
Katie Nolan
I like watching him bleed.
Chris
He said, or it's good. It's good to watch him bleed.
Katie Nolan
Something about him, he's a little bit, you know, but it's fun when they're, when they're incredible and they win. But a coach like that, in this moment, you look, your head tilts a little and you go, are you quirky or are you out of your mind? You know, how does a coach like this hit after a loss like this?
Chris
I, I still think he's a phenomenal coach.
Katie Nolan
He is.
Chris
Because once again, this is a team heading into the season that many people had tipped to be like a contender for the number one overall pick. Especially after those first three games when we went.03, then a lot of people were really anticipating the Celtics to get the number one overall pick. And then with this team that no one anticipated doing anything with, a bunch of these guys who many NBA fans weren't familiar with heading into the season, he was able to rally them and turn them into a 56 win team and put them in a position to succeed. And obviously it wasn't a particularly good series from him or from a lot of the players, but his record in three years as a coach, I think
Katie Nolan
that, that and 90, it's pretty good. He's got 238 wins, 90 losses, the highest winning percentage of all time for a Coach with over 200 games. So.
Chris
Exactly. That's what you have to look at. He'll learn a lot from this series. He didn't. It wasn't the perfect coached series from him, but I'm still more than comfortable having him as the head coach of the Celtics.
Katie Nolan
And at least he's not goofy. He's like, he's wacky, but he's like dark wack. He's not like serious. He's not like a goof. He's not like, you know, Rex Ryan.
Brady
You know, Rex Ryan came to mind because it's like all the quirks are fun when you're winning, but when you're
Katie Nolan
not winning, let's go Eat a goddamn snack. You're like, buddy, coach, I don't know. Kirk Sarloos. Who is that?
Brady
Kirk Starloose is the TCU baseball coach. On Sunday, he got ejected, and baseball coaches, being the weirdos they are, went and grabbed his briefcase and walked to the TCU locker room, which happened to be over the left center field fence. So he just took, like, three minutes to slowly stroll across the field with his briefcase in his hands, and all they can do is hold up the game until he gets there.
Katie Nolan
Well, what's funny is that happened at. Because the Athletics have been taken hostage that somebody, a manager, got kicked out of one of those games recently, and they had to walk all the way back to the. It's just a fun walk of shame with a minor league ballpark.
Brady
Just make it count.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, look, I don't. We can't. We got to move on to hockey. But I do want to say Jaylen Brown going on a stream the day after losing, I wouldn't advise. I mean, have we stopped advising athletes? Have we just started letting them go do whatever they want? And look, I am team. You know, I'm not. Shut up and dribble. I want to hear from athletes. I want to hear, you know, like, Wemby had a quote last week about, like, he refuses to bear the burden of hiding his emotions or whatever. Like, I like seeing emotion and hearing from players. I just think you're gonna turn the ball over unnecessarily. If you go live streaming online the day after you drop a series, you were favored to win and in a position to win a couple times, like, they. They blew that series. No one is saying that Jalen Brown, the next day has to talk unassisted for a long period of time live on the Internet. No one has. No one would ever ask that of him. And yet I saw him promote it. It crossed my feed, and I was like, this is going to be all over the news tomorrow. Because it. The game happened on a Saturday, on a Sunday, he does the live stream, which means Monday, when we all come back to work to talk about it. Whatever dumb things he says in the live stream make it into the conversation. And the dumb things were he said something about Joel Embiid and. And basically said that he flops and that flopping has ruined the game. And he also said that some of the refs, they said that the refs called them more than anybody else, that it was. They had it out for them, and that there were particular refs that, if he had a say, would need to be investigated. Three of them in the last three games. There's just no, I just. And you can be. And this is what I said on the radio. You can be right. He could be right about all of this. It actually doesn't really matter. You can't go on a live stream and process a loss out loud. The first thing you should be saying is. Or at least hiding under the guise by not talking. Hiding under the guise of going. We're introspective. We're searching our souls. We're trying to figure out what went wrong in that loss. We know we let you guys down. We weren't supposed to lose. But to come out and have your first words be about how it's everybody else's fault, how Joellen Bede flops and the refs don't call them. They only call you. And that maybe it's because you were mean to the refs earlier in the season and they have it out for you again. You could be right. It's not gonna land. It's stupid. They used to advise against doing stuff like this. And so I don't know. I was shocked to see he was going on a live stream.
Brady
I was like, this pro athletes Twitch account should be like the nuclear codes. Like somebody else should have the password.
Katie Nolan
You only get access to this when you've proven you've got something worth saying.
Brady
Two keys need to be turned at the exact same time to access that Twitch stream.
Katie Nolan
I know it really was frustrating, but hey, the. The. The Sixers move on now. Joel Embiid, Flopper or not, is basically begging people not to sell their tickets. Do we have that sound? Joel Embiid ask pleading with Sixers fans to please not sell your tickets to Knicks fans.
Brady
We gonna need the support. You know, don't sell your tickets. You know, this is bigger than you. We need you guys. We got a pretty good chance. We gonna need our support. We gonna need them to be extremely loud. If you need money, I got you.
Katie Nolan
Okay, now the end of that hits hard, that last part. You gotta be careful, Joel. Cause they're gonna come for that money. They're go. They do need money and they will ask you for it.
Brady
So if I'm a Sixers fan, I'm going to tell them right now. Sam Morrill's offering me 2,500 bucks for the ticket.
Katie Nolan
If you can raise that. This is also the storyline. I saw that this was going to reignite the. It's going to reheat old beef Chris. That there's Embiid Carl Anthony Towns Beef. Can you get us quickly caught up so that Isabella knows what's going on?
Chris
Yeah, the. The biggest thing from their. Their past, I guess, was an altercation that happened, a physical altercation that happened in October 2019 where they sort of.
Isabella
I saw a picture of this.
Chris
This one. Yeah, they were close to coming to blows, things like that. It sort of spilled over to social media in the aftermath of that. There have been other times throughout their careers where they've sort of gone back and forth on social media. A lot of the time they sort of downplay it after. After the fact and just sort of say that they're just having fun and all this sort of stuff. But there has been some, you know, bad blood between them at times throughout their careers. And so this is the perfect opportunity to see it reignited and to see if there's going to be a little bit more argy bargy. And especially if it comes down, especially if we see a lot more flopping from Joel, we'll see how rgbaji.
Katie Nolan
I mean, there was quite a bit of flopping, wasn't there? Not that we're weighing in on that or not. The reason my jaw dropped. I just got a push notification that Tarek Scubal is undergoing elbow surgery on his throwing arm with no timetable to return.
Brady
Loose bodies out of the old. For jumping right into baseball. Loose bodies out of the left elbow. Two to three months, basically, typically for
Katie Nolan
loose body, loose bodies. That's what I got. And I gotta. I gotta tighten it up. I got a couple months left to tighten it up. The reason I was on my phone is because Joelle Embiid used to follow me. We do. We do still follow each other on Twitter.
Chris
Oh, nice.
Katie Nolan
I haven't. I do not remember how that happened. I do remember one time getting hammered and sending him a DM by accident. Not by accident, but meaning, like, I shouldn't have done it. I was like taunting him something in the Premier League. And I think I sent like a way too familiar, like, nah. And I figured he would have unfollowed me after that, but I, I think he just went like, you're nuts.
Brady
Eating a French onion soup and just sent to Jill and beat like, thank you.
Katie Nolan
He does seem to. Why would I be eating a French onion soup?
Brady
No, it's like the best soup.
Katie Nolan
Okay.
Isabella
He's.
Katie Nolan
I also. That was the bit I will say. Joel Embiid locked in right now. He really does seem motivated by pure, pure hatred. It's like hearing the Celtics fans chanting, we want Boston In Philly, that game I hit. You see, now I've seen another edit of this of him sort of like shaking his head and taking it personally and then taking it out on the Celtics. So maybe he'll do the same thing to the Knicks. Isabella. Something to look forward to. Okay. Did you see Anne Hathaway is supposedly a big nick?
Isabella
I did see that. I did see that. She went on where Colbert.
Katie Nolan
Was it Colbert. Fallon Colbert, by the way, must be wrapping up soon. Question.
Isabella
Oh, I thought you said he was rapping like.
Katie Nolan
No, no.
Isabella
Laying down some trash.
Katie Nolan
No, please, dear God, no. But anyway, Anne Hathaway doing, I assume, press for Devil Wears Prada too.
Isabella
Yes.
Katie Nolan
That Carl Anthony Townes has a cameo in. Did you see it?
Isabella
I saw a clip of it, but I didn't want to watch the whole
Katie Nolan
thing because I haven't seen the movie yet. I meant, did you see the movie? I also didn't watch the cameo because I also don't want to see it till I see the movie. It's also so hard to find an opinion I trust on the Internet now. Half the people are like, that was the worst movie I've ever seen. And half the people are like, that movie was so good. I don't know. I got to. I guess I have to go see it for myself.
Isabella
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
So anyway, there's a but did you see on the Tonight Show. Let's just play the clip of Anne Hathaway talking about the type of fan that she is. I'm very chill. I'm very loving and calm. I want them to know that, like, you can do no wrong.
Brady
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
I'm trying to be like a gentle, loving. Yes, you're motherly fan. Motherly fan. You're a motherly fan. Now I now do we. Is. Have we been. Has she been at a game before? I think she has. Okay.
Isabella
I think she has.
Katie Nolan
Okay.
Isabella
I mean, I saw when this was all going around. I saw a clip and she was like, courtside somewhere. I don't know how long ago this was, but Anunoby was in it, so. Not super long ago.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. Where she was talking about loving OG Anunoby. The reason I ask is because. Listen, and it's not to invalidate, you can be a fan at any time. This Brady. Actually, I should have let him make the point. Brady thinks she's faking it. Ooh.
Brady
We've been so hurt by press tours and press tours have gotten so sentient, just so self aware and so in the weeds of Spawn Con. When Liam Neeson and Pam Anderson were dating. Dating. And it was just to promote Naked Gun, and they weren't actually together.
Katie Nolan
I don't even want to talk about that so much.
Brady
Suddenly, the Knicks playoff run coincides with Devil Wears product not only coming out.
Katie Nolan
Let me. Let me even thicken the plot here. The reason this made my antennas go up is because I thought this hadn't come out yet, but I guess it came out last week. Mother Mary.
Isabella
Yes.
Katie Nolan
Anne Hathaway as a pop star, I believe is what it is. And it's. It's very, you know, biblically coded. It's Michaela Cole who did. What is the name of that show? I loved it on hbo. It was devastating.
Brady
The Idol.
Katie Nolan
No, no. You think I loved the Idol?
Brady
I was hoping you loved the Idol. This is the best way. This conversation.
Katie Nolan
No, she did. Thank you. You. Not thank you for and not. What the hell was the name of that? Not. I think you should leave. It's a sentence like that I may destroy you. This may destroy you. Or I may destroy you.
Chris
I may destroy you.
Katie Nolan
I mean, and that show did destroy me. An incredibly tough watch. Trigger warning. Trigger warning. But it is so well made. So anyway, this was her movie. Mother Mary, I think, and starring Anne Hathaway. So for the sound bite to be that Anne is a motherly fan felt very Press run to me. It felt very. But I don't know. I'm also confused because Mariska Hargitay. Am I saying that right? Olivia Benson from svu, who I always thought was a Knicks fan. I always see it. Knicks games. There was that one year that her and Chris Maloney were holding hands and everybody was like, are you guys. They were like, no, no, no, we're married. But we know the fans love it. And we're like, yeah, the fans love it because they want you to be. I don't think that they're, like, just stoked on you guys holding hands while married. We want to see you guys. Heated rivalry. You know what I'm saying? And so straight heated rivalry. But whatever. But this was like, I saw her at a Lakers game cheering just as hard, and it made me go, excuse me.
Isabella
Yeah, that's not cool.
Katie Nolan
Excuse me, Captain Benson. I don't know where we are. I fell off. I watch SVU out of order. I don't know. Currently. Yeah. I don't know if she's like, the lieutenant. I've been gone for a while. Is Tutuola still there? Gotta love Finn Tutuola. Shout out. Ice tea. I always get afraid I'm gonna Say the wrong ice. That's iced Google.
Brady
AI says she is a captain of the Manhattan Special Victims Unit.
Katie Nolan
Nice. And I assume Elliot Stabler has been taken off the force. Had to turn his gun and badge
Brady
because even by the by, they just canceled his series. He was on organized crime, and they just canceled organized crime.
Katie Nolan
All of it. Forever. Good job, everybody. For forever. Nicely done. Okay, so your second round matchups for the NBA. We are. Wait, real quick before we got into the NHL. What? We don't have time. There is no real quick, real quick
Chris
before we move on from the Anne Hathaway thing.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Chris
Does her fandom, if it is real, sound like anyone else's fandom in this room?
Katie Nolan
It does sound like Isabella's, doesn't it?
Chris
Sounds exactly like how Isabella.
Katie Nolan
Say motherly. Isabella, Motherly. But just how are you trying to
Isabella
say that I'm like a fake?
Katie Nolan
No, no.
Chris
Very supportive.
Katie Nolan
I could put a photo.
Chris
You're right.
Katie Nolan
I will never make you take the test here, Isabella. That's the thing at casuals. You never have to pass the test in order to prove your.
Isabella
I have a photo of me and msg.
Katie Nolan
However many years ago, you were motherly and kind and loving.
Chris
As you're supportive, you write your switch
Katie Nolan
up from being so pissed to being like.
Chris
You write your post it notes. You're just trying to send good vibes to the team. You are not a toxic fan. You are the opposite of a toxic fan.
Isabella
Except when you see me in my privacy on the couch.
Katie Nolan
I was gonna say her Mets fandom's starting to get a little toxic.
Chris
I can be honest.
Katie Nolan
She's starting to get a little mean to these people and their families. I saw her mean tweeting because of her draftkings parlay. Didn't hit. And I was like, isabella, come on.
Isabella
I have a double sports fandom.
Katie Nolan
She's actually like a sharp. She's actually paying attention to betting very closely and pretending not to know anything about sports. Okay, again, to recap your second round matchups for the NBA playoffs before we get to the NHL, before we take our literal first break, I don't know how we're ever going to get this podcast, right, but here we go. You've got the Sixers and the Knicks. Game 1 is Monday, so it will have happened by the time this comes out. The Timberwolves are at the Spurs. Game one is. Was also Monday, so that will have happened. Cavaliers at Pistons. Game one is Tuesday. That's tonight. The audio comes out at 7 Eastern. And then Lakers at Thunder. Game one. Is Tuesday at 8:30 Eastern. So I do think the Lakers are in for a rude awakening. But anything can happen and we will see. And hopefully the people of Detroit will find a way to watch their team since their cable can't get it figured out. Okay, call Emmett Smith.
Brady
He's got you.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, exactly. Back to the bit, which was the good, the bad, and the missoula. We're doing it as well for the NHL postseason. We will start with the good. There were a lot of options here, but we went with the Hurricanes starting the playoffs off on a 5 nothing run. 5 and O run. So the Flyers beat the Penguins in six, which moved them on to face the Carolina Hurricanes in the second round. The Hurricanes, who swept the Senators in the first round, then went on to win Game 1. This was Saturday against the Flyers. It was a shutout. Three nothing. And so that means that the Hurricanes. The Carolina Hurricanes. Chris's carrot? No. You're a San Jose Sharks fan.
Chris
Yeah, but I've. I've adopted them for this postseason because the Sharks aren't in there.
Katie Nolan
Sure. Chris's Carolina Hurricanes. Lifelong fan, never misses a puck. They've won five straight games in the postseason. Quite a postseason that they're having. I was rooting for the Flyers against the Penguins. I've stopped doing that because I think I was maybe rooting for Philly too much. And then the 76ers beat the Celtics. Now I'm pissed at the city in general. So not thrilled about it. I'm not rooting against the Flyers. I hope that this is a good series. But the most interesting thing about it, the reason we put it under the good, not just the hockey, is the beer skate. Did you guys see that? They introduced before this series a new thing that you can chug beer out of at their arena.
Isabella
Cool.
Katie Nolan
And this one is a skate. So it's a plastic mug in the shape of a skate with a hurricane's logo on it. It has a handle on the back part of the skate. Also, the skate part is clear. So you can see the beer fill up. The video I watched of somebody filling it up. They need to practice. Okay? They've got to try a little harder because the second you see it move past, like, the. The foamy bit, you see that, like, move on the skate all of a sudden. Oh, my God. It thought I was doing hard. Hands on the zoom. As soon as the foam bit moves up the skate, it's, like, already flowing out the. They need to tilt that thing when they fill it. I will say that you've got it. If you're gonna fill a novelty item, there needs to be a specific training about how to fill it properly. I don't want to sip all foam inside of a skate, but this is really the only boot I can find myself supporting. They sold 4,687 of them during the game, which I believe worked out to like one out of every four fans bought a skateboard. What do we all think?
Brady
I love it. I love anything we can creatively get more beer into. Hockey is great. About this. Quick Power ranking top five. We've got five things I can throw at you from casuals lore and NHL lore. Non traditional vessels to drink beer out of at a hockey arena.
Katie Nolan
Okay.
Brady
We have the skate. We have the beer stick, which is at many arenas. It's like 24 ounce, like a hockey stick, which is hollowed out and filled with beer.
Katie Nolan
Does it have a lid? Does it have a screw on lid to it?
Brady
No, they never give you a lid.
Katie Nolan
That's crazy. I know.
Brady
The Buffalo saber.
Katie Nolan
Throw it. Which is crazy. I can throw literally anything and you can't stop me. Go ahead.
Brady
The saber in Buffalo. The sword, which went viral. We have an actual shoe. We have seen many people recently drinking out of actual shoes, most of them Australian. And we have the Stanley cup itself. Top five.
Katie Nolan
Okay, so we're going to put five. Is the shoe disgusting? Gross. Get it out of here.
Chris
That's what I got.
Katie Nolan
I think for four, we. I would go with the stick.
Chris
Me too.
Katie Nolan
If I could put a cap on it and play with it in the meantime, I would. I would put it higher. But the fact that once I have it, I kind of have to hold it and I can't. Okay. And then the third one, I would go with the saber at three because while. While very cool, we saw how hard it can be to chug out of it. Apparently it all kind of sloshes down in your face at once, as that guy from that podcast learned when he embarrassed the out of himself trying to chug in front of all those people. Then the next one above that, I'm putting the skate, the beer skate. That we're just. That we just. That inspired the bit. And then number one, the Stanley cup
Chris
got the same five.
Katie Nolan
I mean, that's the correct ranking. That's.
Chris
That's. I'd say so correct.
Isabella
Only if I can keep it though.
Katie Nolan
The Stanley Cup. Yeah, yeah, you can't. Nobody can. It's kind of the beautiful thing about the trophy. Normally they'll give you your own. Yeah, they. You get like time with it. Everybody gets to spend time with it and then it, it moves on. So kind of cool. I think they get a replica, but I don't. But I think the original cup they get to spend like, I don't know, days with.
Brady
Yeah, the original cup. Like you get your name engraved on it, right? And then you could just get to like take it around the city. You can take it on a date. Plenty of people like, you'll see it
Katie Nolan
out wherever they need you put your baby in it. You can eat cereal out of it. There's a lot of things you can do with it. But I would try to drink beer. I think you'd. It'd be too heavy to chug out of. But you'd get help. I'd get help. I'd do a keg stand on it and then I would slurp the beer out of it. Like my dog. I would use my tongue like a little bowl. Have you ever seen a slow motion video of a dog drinking out of the bowl where you see they like cup their tongue in a way that makes it like, like this. So I learned, yeah, I watched that. I learned how to do it. And I'll be doing that to the Stanley cup as I keg stand on it. So that's why I ranked it number one. Quick thing, I would like to shed a little light on game two of that going to be will have happened by the time you hear this. It was Monday at 7 Eastern. Like I said, the Canes won the first game. The Canes mascot came out swinging. So the Canes have a mascot named Stormy. And Stormy tweeted from his official account, he quote, tweeted a tweet from Gritty. And I think all I saw it was just Gritty's eyes. Gritty, our friend here. And tweeted, welcome to hell ya Muppet reject. What? Which was like, okay, all right. So then of course I said, well, I gotta find out more about this guy. What's Stormy's whole deal? What even animal is Stormy? Because the name I assume reference to the Hurricanes. But he's not a hurricane, he's like an animal. So I go to look up more. It's Stormy the ice hog. Which only introduces more questions. What is that? I've never heard of that. Is it a real thing or are they just saying they're known for having pigs? And this one skates, but then he's named Stormy. So it's doing too much. Yeah, it's not connected enough to the ice. It's not at least Gritty is like it's a monster. We don't know, but at least he has a story. So I go, you know what? I bet he's got like a bio on NHL.com, right? So I go to NHL.com I go to the official page for Stormy the Ice Hog, trying to see if they've got like species info, maybe a little bit of a cute story. All it is is a direct link to his pricing. It is just how much it costs to have Stormy come to your event. Now it's like an only fans just for Stormy the mascot. In case you were wondering if he if you want him to pop in and say hello or goodbye to you at an event. Five minute. A five minute appearance. If that's a weekday, from 8am to 6pm it's going to cost you 100 bucks. What if it's a night, a holiday or a weekend, it's going to cost you 150. Any event you invite Stormy to, it's got to be within 25 miles of Lenovo center where they play their games. And it has to be a minimum of seven days notice. Now if you want to get him at your wedding, 500 bucks. 500 bucks flat rate. No matter what day it is. Not saving any money if your your wedding is during the week. 500 bucks. You get 30 minutes and he'll dance, take a picture with your guests, which is great. And he brings a gift. So you'd hope it's tickets. It would really suck if it's some
Chris
sort of Swag, but for 500 bucks
Katie Nolan
it costs the team no money to give you tickets for free. That would obviously be what you would want it to be. Be kind of crazy if instead they gave you like an XXL T shirt as a wedding gift. 500 bucks.
Chris
Plates. Some nice dinner plates.
Katie Nolan
Now, just as a comparison, I went to Gritty's NHL.com page and it says Gritty's the official mascot of the Philadelphia Flyers, best known for his uniquely Philadelphian personality. Stands at 7ft tall with non blinking googly eyes, covered head to toe in orange fur and an unkempt beard. His appearance is inimitable. Gritty's edgy personality and temperamental attitude have allowed him to push the envelope of what's possible or acceptable for a team mascot. That's what I'm looking for. Stormy, your team doesn't love you enough to write six sentences about what you're about, why you're a hog, why you're an ice hog, and why your name Is Stormy. So I get. I like that you're talking spicy out here. To the. One of the most beloved mascots in the NHL. But you should have made sure your house was in order first because I'm looking at the way your team treats you and they treat you like a. Like a revenue opportunity, not like a member of the family. Gritty has his own seating section where they play like it's. They called the Orange. Whatever it is, the Orange Club Orange. I forget what they call it. Sorry, Gritty. Don't be mad. I'm doing a good job.
Chris
I'm.
Isabella
Turn around, say it to his face.
Katie Nolan
Sorry. Believe it or not, not the last time we're going to talk about mascots today. But we got to move on to the bad. The bad in the NHL playoffs and it's that the Oilers got eliminated by the Ducks. I mean, Connor McDavid has revealed, as they always do, this is the best part of the hockey postseason, Isabella, where they stop playing and they tell you what has been hurting the whole time. Connor McDavid, we assumed was hurt. He came out and said he's got a fractured foot. So he's been playing through a fractured foot and now he's probably leaving the Oilers. Right? All signs point to.
Brady
Signs are pointing there.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, we'll see, I guess what happens. Signed a two year contract extension last October, which means he's eligible to become an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2028. But I don't know. I've been hearing people talk about him leaving a lot sooner than that.
Chris
Forcing a trade. Yeah.
Brady
You're such a hockey fan. You're glossing over the fact this man played with a broken foot. Whatever.
Katie Nolan
Because that's common.
Brady
That's what they do.
Katie Nolan
It's pretty classic.
Brady
It's insane. Every time they do it, they just list it as, you know, he's questionable. Lower body injury.
Katie Nolan
And they never tell you during the series because they don't want people to target his foot, you know, which is crazy.
Brady
Crazy that, like, there is a process for making sure that no one is just kicking him in his broken foot.
Katie Nolan
I know. And they followed it. And. And look, he looked bad, so that makes sense. But boy, oh boy, how frustrating for the Oilers and how frustrating for the what Chaos podcast. Our friends, our friendly hockey podcast. Pete is a Bruins fan. They're out. DJ Is. I don't know where this came from, but as an Oilers fan. They're out. Sean, their producer, Sabers fan. He's the only one that's still alive. Yeah. And let's just get into that. It's the Missoula of the NHL playoffs, and it's that the Bruins lost to the Sabres. A silver lining. They did it in six. I didn't. I just really was not looking forward to having to go seven. You know what I'm saying? It was just like, wrap it up, you guys. They lost, what, four. One in that game on Friday night. So the Sabers move on. That's their first series win since the 0607 season, I believe. Yeah, it's a very long time ago. I was still in college. Zoom in on the crow's feet so they know just how long ago that was. The Sabers go on. The Sabers go on to play the. Thanks, Brady. Go on to play the Canadians in the next round, which. Look, normally I'd go like, ah, screw the Sabers, but I'm at. I might. I'm just gonna root for the Sabres now. I think, first of all, because they were going to play whoever won. Canadiens, Lightning. Who went to game seven this past weekend, The Canadiens won. Even though they only got, like, I think, nine shots on net, they still won. That series was crazy. That game was crazy. And I feel really bad for Tampa Bay Lightning fans. It was just a brutal way to lose that series. I think they lost three games at home in that series. Each team was, like, trading wins. They were trading goals in the last game. It was just a wild series. But I hate both of those teams. And so either way, I was going to root for whoever came out of the. And it ended up being the Sabers. And I'm happy for the Sabers. So I. I don't think. Is it weird if I root for them? No.
Brady
If. If. If the Sabers win the cup, then you can be like, well, we were the second best team.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. And I wouldn't even do that because we stink. God, we stink. We're cheeks. I hate the Bruins. Watching them was not fun. It was like a really unenjoyable, miserable situation. Okay, so that's that. That's the Missoula. The Bruins suck, and I hate them. I. It was fun watching Dan, who, by the way, I think, like, three seasons, maybe four seasons ago, I brought Dan into the Bruins fandom. Now, if you know anything about how the Bruins postseasons have gone the last four or five years, it's been very bad. So he not only feels responsible, which is annoying, when you bring somebody new in, and they go, is it me? And you're like, no, it's not you. It's the team who sucks. Don't look for an excuse to not watch this game. It's not. You sit your ass in the chair and watch Bruins hockey. This is what it is. This is what it feels like. But yeah, just to have him come in and go like this sucks. But it was fun this series. Watching him feel comfortable enough in his Bruins fandom to start calling some players out of their name, to start naming guys and going, get off my team. That was like a real sweet moment for me where I was like, that's right, baby. We do hate that guy because that guy sucks. I won't name them here because I believe the eye test. I watch sports and make my allegiances as well as my enemies. Strictly here, I don't. Then go check the stats and go, well, I actually had a pretty good game. I didn't realize it's all eyes. So you could be the greatest player on the team, but you did like three things I caught you doing and I didn't like them. Get off my team. I hate you. Yeah, it's just the way that I am. So I. So for that reason, I won't be naming any of them, but there are about three names of people I was livid at during the postseason that did nothing to win my fandom back. Now you might be thinking, Katie, the PWHL women's hockey. The women from the Boston Fleet. Aaron Frankel, the. The goalie from the women's gold medal winning team is the goalie for the fleet. You gotta get into the Fleet. And I am. That series is tied. 1 1, game three. Not till Friday. I. The fact that I gotta wait till Friday for the third game of this series sucks. They dropped a game at home to Ottawa. They're playing the Ottawa Charge. And so that series, fine, but I can't get hyped on it because I got 75 days until the next game. Your second round matchups for the NHL, the Flyers and the Hurricanes. Game two, Monday night at seven. So that will have happened by the time this comes out to us. Carolina's up one nothing. But who knows now The Ducks and the Golden Knights, Game one. I mean, what a series of teams. I don't like the that game one was Monday at 9:30 Eastern. The wild and the avalanche. Game two. Game one of that. Crazy. And I was also thinking to you, Brady, because the Avalanche and the Wild, two teams, no s, but the Avalanche go by the aves a lot of the time. And then that had me thinking about no s, teams that get abbreviated to teams with an S. Like, I believe sometimes people call the Liberty the Libs. I've seen that. That's very funny.
Brady
I mean, if you gotta. You gotta shorten it and put the S on it. Just have the S in the beginning. We're just trying to make extra steps to get to the S. It all
Katie Nolan
roads lead to the S. Nothing pleases this guy. He's never happy.
Brady
Because what is one player from the Wild called? I'm sure someone will email him or something.
Katie Nolan
Clever Wildling. Yeah. And one of the aves is called an Avalanche. I don't know.
Brady
An ave is fine.
Katie Nolan
Game two of that's Tuesday at eight. Game one was fucking absurd. Five goals per period, 15 total goals. It was back and forth. It was intense. It was nine. Six, I think was the final. But that betrays how close the game was. It just. And it didn't start close either. It started. They got out to a three goal lead and then it was a fight. It was an awesome. An awesome series. That'll be one to watch this round. If you're gonna watch one, I would tune in and watch that one. And then the Canadians and the Sabres. That'll also be fun, just because of the Sabers environment. That's Wednesday at 7, game one of that series. Okay. Hello. It's time for our first break. I mean, Jesus H. Christ. When we come back, we see how much we can fit into the rest of the podcast. Obviously, Kentucky Derby was this weekend something that, like what I had said to Isabella was that if you were raised around it or if you only look at it really quickly, it's really fun, a really fun weekend. But there is that middle ground where you look into it a little too deeply and you start to find some stuff out where you go. Like what? Like, I think Isabella found out live on the air that they sometimes have to get rid of the horses in a way you wouldn't love when something goes wrong and she could not believe. And I was like, let's forget I ever said that. Obviously a sport that is not without its shortcomings and its issues. That being said, I really enjoyed the Derby this year. I tuned in, you know, the, the coverage starts and there's like a whole lot of stuff around it. There's. I called it an undercard jokingly to Dan, but I then heard somebody on the broadcast call the other races that happened before the big race, the undercard. So I guess that's not a joke. I was thinking of like ufc, you know, like, it's a. They're like lesser known fights, but no, they were. That's really what they're called. So there are a bunch of races leading up to it which don't really interest me. I. They're good for when you're there. I went to the Belmont Stakes once and I, you know, you bet a lot on those, so it like gets you warmed up to bet on the big one. But during this broadcast, a couple things stood out to me. Number one, and this is a quick one, they had Pat Day, a legendary jockey. Do the riders up And Brady wasn't the issue with that. Maybe it was at the Oaks, but it was. Somebody did it. These are brand new jeans and I just noticed that they're ruined the story. Livy Dunn last year did her riders up. And she did it, like, kind of awkwardly.
Brady
Riders checks notes up. Yeah, it was a very awkward pause. Very dull.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, very awkward. But I will say partially a bit. That's because it's only two words. All you're supposed to say is, writers up. Pat Day said, put your writers up. Okay. Which had me go, is that Lil Kim? That's a Lil Kim song. Put your riders up. You know, put your lighters up. Remember that? Does anyone remember that song? Sounded like welcome to Jamrock. It was like the same type of beat. That was so he was like, put your riders up. I'm like, I don't have any control over that. They get up on their own. I don't. I know they're small, but I don't think somebody puts them up. But somebody does buck them off. Brady. One of the things we noticed.
Brady
Oh, God.
Katie Nolan
Right before the race, what I was. We both. This stood out to both of us. Tell everybody what happened.
Brady
So right before they're loading the horses in loading, they're going to their post. They're, you know, it takes a while to walk these horses in orderly fashion into the post where they start from. And Great White, who's like a long shot. But I looked it up, like, this is a giant horse.
Katie Nolan
He's the biggest horse.
Brady
1300 pounds of horse.
Katie Nolan
Huge.
Brady
Something spooked it and it rose up on its hind legs, threw the rider off of the back of it or like onto the ground, and the horse, like, tumbled to the ground and like, immediately in a panic, like, oh, my God, like, these horses are so heavy, when they hit the ground, they hurt themselves. They break ribs, they break legs.
Katie Nolan
And if they land on a guy, they would have broken that guy. Kill him.
Brady
Yes.
Katie Nolan
Luckily he didn't.
Brady
They had to scratch the horse. The horse, like, had to go, checked out and couldn't run in the race. That it was like a minute away from running it.
Katie Nolan
They were loading him into the starting gate. Isabella. They were about to go and he just like, freaked out, fell. But whenever you see a horse, like, in a position other than straight up, I know Nate Bargetzi has a bit about a horse on its side and them thinking that it was dead, but it was just asleep. It's.
Isabella
You should get up.
Katie Nolan
It's very funny. But anytime you see a horse like on Its back. You're like, ah, not right. It just like doesn't sit well with your soul. It was very scary. But they didn't everything. It didn't have to.
Brady
Turns out it was fine. That horse is still alive today.
Katie Nolan
Horse was fine to not have to go to a factory. Which again, I don't think she even knows.
Brady
Puts a damper on though, because like the whole time you're watching you're like, is Great white okay? Is Great white okay?
Katie Nolan
So here was what happened to me. I'd like to do this in the order of order of operations. So I find out during the broadcast that Donna Brothers is retiring. Now, if you've ever watched a Kentucky Derby, you may not have remembered her by name, but don't you know Donna Brothers? She rides the horse next to the winner, who's riding their horse. She is a whole new level of sports broadcaster like you've never seen. She's a former jockey, her mom, she comes from a horse racing family. I think her mom was one of the first people, first women to get a jockeys license. I don't know if that's. Yeah. Licensed to be a jockey around 1969. Patty Barton was her mom. Donna Brothers herself, one of the most decorated female jockeys of her time. And she does these incredible interviews, Isabella. Where like nobody else could do this unless you know they're trained to do this. She rides the horse next to the horses and talks to the jockeys and then interviews them. It's awesome. It's like so visually interesting. It also shows like such respect for what they do. She joined the team in 2000, the NBC team. So this was her 26th Derby. She said that she wanted to at least make it to 25 derbies. And then she was like, one more would be great because then I turned 60 and it was some sort of quote like these women from this generation do, where she's like, because then I feel like I've earned my retirement. And you're like, you have more than earned your retirement. You've been working so hard for so long. So they like surprised her with a package during the Derby, which was really sweet. Every time they tried to make it about her, you could tell she was very uncomfortable where she was like, let's get back to the horses. Like, let's talk about the horses. They surprised her with a package of all of her greatest hits and her greatest moments. She was like crying on set. She's like, thank you everybody. There's. Thank God we've got hair and makeup standing by Because I was. I'm now emotional. Then they do this walkover. It's one of the traditions where when it's finally time for the big race, they've got all their. A bunch of their different reporters stationed on a. But with a bunch of these different teams that are walking their horses from wherever they are, the paddocks or whatever, out to the track to get ready to get loaded in, to get ready to race. And the reporters will walk and then they'll toss, like, to another reporter, and that one's with this horse or this trainer on their walk. And so Donna is walking out with a woman named Sheree Devo. And in this conversation, I'm doing this in the order that it happened to me. I see this Sheree Devo. And Donna basically says, like, you could be set. Making history here today. I believe we have a clip from that interview. Cherie, in a race that's 152 years old, it's pretty hard to make history. What would it mean to you to make history here today?
Isabella
I mean,
Brady
it.
Isabella
I don't know if I can conceptualize it at the moment, so if I do, I'll let you know. But you were one of the first that you were the first woman jockey to win a Triple Crown race, right? So women like you are what made
Katie Nolan
it easy for me.
Isabella
And by the way, My career started 22 years ago at Churchill, and I've always admired and respected you, and it is an honor that you get to
Katie Nolan
do your last walk. Walk over with me. Well, we're not gonna make this about me. I'm hoping you become the first female trainer to win the Kentucky Derby. Good luck to you.
Isabella
Thank you.
Katie Nolan
So is that not the cutest? So I'm like, wait, I actually love this. I hope this Cherie Devoe woman, I gotta find out what horse she is. I hope she wins. So then they go to the segment where everybody does their picks. And I will just say, shout out to NBC Sports. They do this so flawlessly. They've got a million hosts on the day. And at this point of the broadcast, they basically have them broken off into, like, groups of two, three. And they toss seamlessly from each other as a graphic keeps track of who every single person on the broadcast is picking, what horse they're picking. And they get to Donna, brothers. This is going to be her last pick. And she says, I am picking Golden Tempo because that horse is trained by Cherie Devoe, who I'm hoping today makes a little bit of history and becomes the first female trainer to Win the Kentucky Derby. Then we get to the race. The big flare up happens when what's the great white has to go. And so we're watching all the horses get loaded in. Dan and I were pulling for the young Way Ku horse, Further Ado. Further Ado, whose odds kept jumping up like he was a. He was a co favorite by the time they ran the race, which I was annoyed by because I was like, now if he wins, I look like I picked a co favorite, not like I picked it when I picked that horse. He had very long odds. Almost as long as the odds of
Isabella
you knew him before he got famous.
Katie Nolan
Exactly. Thank you. And I wouldn't have gotten credit, so I was kind of like feeling iffy about my pick anyway. Yeah. But as we come around this last stretch, there's one horse that starts pulling into the lead who at the very beginning of the race had like, it was the longest odds. Dan and I laughed. We're like 80 to 1 odds. Imagine if this guy wins and it starts to look like that guy could win. Right. All of a sudden, from the literal back of the pack. Golden Tempo, last place. Coming around the last turn. Yes. All of a sudden runs up the side. You see all these horses making their moves. It's the most interesting part about horse racing is that last stretch where you're like, even if you want to get up there, how do you pass? It's just horse bodies everywhere you look. So they all start making whatever their moves are. And Golden Tempo, just kind of slow and steady, but fast, obviously races up the side of all the horses, and all of a sudden, right at the last second, pulls into the lead. And Golden Tempo wins, 25 to 1 odds. Golden Tempo won. Golden Tempo won. So Cherie Devoe became the first female trainer to win the Kentucky Derby, the second ever to win a Triple Crown race, I believe. Just absolutely insane. An awesome story. And I also think, is this true, Brady? Correct me if I'm wrong. The jockey who was riding Golden Tempo and the jockey who rode the second place horse were brothers.
Brady
Oh, I don't know. That's cool, though.
Katie Nolan
I think. I mean, all the horses are basically related. Aren't they all descendants of Secretariat? I don't think they're.
Brady
19 of the first 20 in the original field, there were 20 horses. 19 of them were descendants of Secretariat.
Katie Nolan
It's like a family reunion, you know, it's like a race at a family reunion. And we don't want to think too much about how that all works, but actually, yes, you do, because our Fans, Our fan base wrote in to give us more information on the horses and how they be fucking. So we talked about that young Wei Ku guy and how he worked for a farm and what was his name again? Toothacher. Toothacher. Mark Toothaker. And I was like, I don't know what he does, but it has something to do with the breeding, I think, of the horses. And luckily, we got some correspondence from the fans of our podcast. An email from Carrie. I heard Chris.
Chris
Yeah. Kara Rice says hello, casuals fam. As Kentucky Derby week wraps up, I wanted to share my favorite sports fun fact about the Bluegrass State Seamen commercials.
Isabella
Okay, you heard that right
Chris
as you talked about. Horse breeding is even more lucrative than the races themselves. So every fall into spring, local TV in Kentucky is blessed with commercials that advertise studs. They usually highlight reels of the horse with voiceovers of random high powered words like born winner, victory, pedigree. And they're made even better when the horse has a name than can be considered innuendo.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, I. This is so funny. You know, people say, like, son, I've forgotten more sports than you ever knew. And I don't think that's true about me. I will say I'm. This is like refreshing a memory for me. I knew about this because I think we did this either on garbage time or always late. And have since completely suppressed the memory of semen commercials to the point where it was new again for just a moment. Because isn't that the craziest thing you've ever heard, Isabella?
Isabella
Yeah, like, I didn't think they would make an ad for it. I thought this would be like, maybe like a private email thread or something.
Katie Nolan
Like, hey, if you're looking for some semen, we do have it now. I don't want to be loud about it, but. No, they are. Come one, come all. It's the semen commercial. Do we have some audio to maybe play?
Brady
Lucky for you guys, I went down the rabbit hole. YouTube semen commercial.
Katie Nolan
And every week Brady finds a new rabbit hole to go down that I go, maybe you shouldn't have gone down that. That's gonna screw up your algorithm.
Brady
You wonder why my computer does not work.
Katie Nolan
I know your video's always lagging because of all the viruses you've given it by searching horse semen commercial.
Brady
Gotta get it somewhere. So let's go to the first commercial is for a horse. She says it's funny when the horse's name is considered innuendo. So Carrie brings us this commercial, which is just a Still shot. It's a voiceover and sound over. Very, very serious still shots. And zooms on a horse named tapit.
Isabella
Oh, okay.
Brady
2013 yearling sale average of over $400,000. 4 individual million dollar yearlings during Keeneland September.
Isabella
Good stuff.
Brady
The highest grossing US sire two years running. Tap it.
Katie Nolan
Tap it and you. Sounds like a Gatorade commercial. Oh, but then I found more Game of Bones. What was with that music? That's fucking crazy.
Brady
It's all of them.
Katie Nolan
Crazy.
Brady
It's all of them. And then you run into ones that have testimonials which I gotta direct you to. I believe this is the offspring of Tap it is Arthur's Ride. We have an ad from this year's campaign for the semen of Arthur's Ride.
Katie Nolan
I would say he's the prettiest thoroughbred I've ever seen. Sixteen, two. He's got bone. He's got a beautiful hip.
Brady
He had that too.
Katie Nolan
Arthur's Ride. Just sprinting through the stretch.
Brady
He was extremely fast.
Katie Nolan
He has the topic speed. Speed that stays on the grade one Whitney to Arthur's Ride. He's big, he's pretty, he's correct, he's fast.
Brady
They have that scene, look, he's a no brainer.
Katie Nolan
He's big, he's pretty, he's correct. Also the unsheathing. Yuck. Dude, that's just a big horse. Dong is what they mean in that situation now. And so this is this like come on by, get your horse by my horse. Or is this like order online will send semen. You put it in yourself some semen and stuff.
Brady
I honestly couldn't find an answer of the delivery map.
Katie Nolan
Looks like we're assumed it was the first one. We're just going to have to sign Brady up and have him come by and they'll go, oh, we so are you. Will you be taking the specimen today?
Brady
I think they do both because I know there is a mechanism for the actual breeding of the horses on site, but then I think you can probably.
Katie Nolan
And when you say you know, what do you mean by that?
Brady
A lot of rabbit holes, man. A lot of rabbit holes.
Katie Nolan
How many horse holes? That's crazy. It's crazy to run ads. That's like the only comp to that is like the college ads during college football games where they like every com, every whatever school gets to run an ad for their school. And I was like, it's so funny the things they point to when you go, yeah, the football. Mention the football. That's obviously why we're watching this is like, hey, you want a horse? This one? Would your horse someone your horse and give you a better horse? And that horse could win races.
Isabella
No brainer.
Katie Nolan
Crazy.
Brady
It's got bones.
Katie Nolan
Crazy. Got bone. Oh, my God, Yuck.
Isabella
They talked about the hips for one of them too. For like great hips.
Katie Nolan
The horse racing community and God love them, I know they're out there. Maybe some of them listen to this podcast. They've been very nice to me. There was a guy that I met that was very nice to me and helpful in the horse racing space. They are a little in, in. In. What's the word I'm looking for in a bubble. Yeah, it's like they. They don't think of the way the. It's like they all know the words and the terms. They don't realize, I guess, how it sounds to people who don't. And so like on derby weekend, you gotta think that, like a lot of us don't know what you're saying. Maybe you don't talk about how he's got great bone. You know, I just. Anyway, is that it for horse semen or does anyone have a little bit left they want to get out a little post? A little post comes. Anyone have any. We squeezed everything out of the derby. You think that there was to squeeze, Katie?
Brady
I don't know how to fucking answer.
Katie Nolan
I don't either. So I guess congrats. That was pretty cool. I did see people getting mad that peacock. NBC cut away before they got the full ceremony for the winner because they had to get to that Celtic Sixers game. And I will say I also saw people say they were annoyed that it took them so long to cut away to that Sixers Celtics game. And I was one of those people where I was like, we get it. We saw who won. Time to get me to a pre game, get me to the. In the arena. Like, it switched over and the game started. And I feel like. I just feel like we gotta be harder on these networks that bid for both of these events. You got to do a better job of handing me off. NBC did a great job with. What was it that they handed off to the Olympics? Was it super bowl or the. Yeah, super bowl handed off to the Olympics, I believe this year. Yes. Yeah, but it wasn't like Tariko like flew over there like that night. Like, they did a great job of that. The. This was a little clunky for me.
Brady
Well, I think they had it down to the minute. They had it like pinpointed and then Great White threw the rider Great White's fault. And the. And the. Well, the race started late. Started a couple minutes late. And that throws off the whole entire clock.
Katie Nolan
Well, I mean, I think you could watch it on Peacock, but then people go like, I don't have Peacock, and I don't know. I don't know what to do.
Brady
Yeah. The average. The average age of people who are gonna be angry, who want to watch the horse racing post and who can't find Peacock.
Katie Nolan
Like, right.
Brady
There's a lot of overlap there.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, fair enough. Okay. That's. That I think, is all of the Derby. I love that. I hope it was clear and wasn't just covered in semen, that I was very happy about how that went. It was so cool to kind of watch that unfold, live to, like, see that Donna Brothers was retiring and that she's a legend. See the two of them kind of lift each other up and then see Donna pick her and then see her. Isabella, you gotta watch just the last stretch of the guitar coming from all the way behind to win. Crazy. And there's also a clip of her, the Cherie, watching it and cheering. And she, like, lifts herself up and she's, like, kicking her feet and she's cheering for the jockey. It's really, really cool and really sweet. I know horse racing isn't everybody's thing, but that was a really cool moment. Also saw men online discovering sexism for the first time. Somebody was like, you know, I've been racking my brain, and I just can't figure out why a woman trainer. Why men would have any sort of. Of advantage in this area. Why did it take so long for a woman to become a train. The winning trainer at the Kentucky Derby? And everyone was like, are you sitting down? There's. It's not always the meritocracy of it all. I. I've got quite a bit of evidence to show you, my darling.
Brady
We've had horse girls for years.
Katie Nolan
What do you mean they haven't been able to train well? Okay, this is the story I really want to get to this weekend. The Red Sox, they suck. Nothing new there. Red Sox suck. They had a birthday party this weekend for Wally, our beloved mascot. Wally, aptly named. He's a green monster. And Isabella, you know, the Green monster is a big wall Fenway. You've been. And so they throw this birthday party for him where they invite all of these other mascots and kind of awesome, kind of cool. They do it every single year. This year, it fell on the same day as Star Wars Day at The ballpark. So already I've got notes where it's like, there's, like, a theme, but it isn't what the theme was. Wally's birthday. Now we've got mascots showing up dressed like Obi Wan for Wally's birthday. Unless Wally wanted a Star wars themed birthday. That doesn't seem fair to me. So Wally's birthday party invitees. We have Blades, the Boston Bruins bear mascot. Lucky, the Boston Celtics guy that wears a hat and is, like, leprechauny. Now. Tough day for those two to have to go to a birthday party and support your friend after, you know, being eliminated from the postseason. Days before.
Brady
Blaze can at least, like, be visibly pissed off under his head.
Katie Nolan
Yes. And we will get to the lucky of it all in just a second. They also invited the frog from Boston Common golf. Is that T.G.L. brady?
Brady
Yes. Yeah. And then that's the Noah Khan squad.
Katie Nolan
Right. And then Tessie, which is the girl version of Wally, whatever you want to call that. I don't know if they're like brother and sister. I've never. I don't know. And I don't want to say because I didn't look into it. And I would hate to say that's his wife if it's his sister. So.
Isabella
Fake Red Sox fan.
Katie Nolan
I know, I know. They got me. Hands up. So Tessie is there. Pat Patriot from the Patriots had no comment on Froebel Rossini. And then Slugger from the Portland Sea Dogs. Now, the reason I say there was controversy is because that's not like all of the Boston mascots. The Boston Cannon from the pll, which is lacrosse, correct? Yes. They're the Boston Cannons. The Cannon from that team. The mascot from that team tweeted that they were left out. They tweeted. Guess our invite got lost in the mail. And it was just a picture of the Boston Cannon mascot sitting on a bench all by himself. Aw, I'll play with you.
Isabella
What's up?
Katie Nolan
Really sad. And then the Woo Socks mascot also posted the day of the birthday party and said, not a lot going on at the moment. And it's just the Woo Socks mascot sitting at an empty polar park where the Woo Socks play, just alone, sitting uninvited. Which is also crazy because didn't we just get our manager from the Woo Socks?
Brady
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
And so it's like they. He knows a guy. You should have absolutely been invited. Our team is the Woo Socks at this point. So either way, they went on with the party. And the reason I wanted to bring this up Is because I saw a tweet that really made me lose my mind heading into this weekend, teasing that party. The tweet, of course, pointed out what Brady has since pointed out as well, which is that Lucky is the only mascot of all these mascots who's just a guy. Like, Lucky is not in a big, furry, fluffy mascot suit. Lucky is just a man in, like, a. In a goofy outfit. He's not just a regular guy, goofy outfit, goofy hat character that he's playing, but, like, he's got a. He's got a human face. Those are his human arms and legs. And he's going to a party of entirely, for all intents and purposes, furries. And then him and this tweet from AM Packard. Handsome Be wonderful. Said it has to be so weird for Lucky at these hangs, which. If we. If we had a. If we had, like, video capabilities, if I still had garbage time, this would have been a sketch for the week. The sketch would have been what it's like to be the human at the mascot party, to have to only interact in mascot ways with humans and mascots. But the. But you are a mascot, but you look like a human. Does Lucky talk, I assume?
Isabella
No.
Chris
I've never heard Lucky talk.
Katie Nolan
Take fan again, Isabella.
Isabella
Wait. But I can't get even weirder.
Katie Nolan
It's even weirder to have furry not
Isabella
talk and then not have Lucky talk.
Katie Nolan
I can't tell if it's weirder if he does or if he doesn't because it's. It is weird to be a human that goes like.
Brady
Well, here's the problem. He is very clearly a leprechaun.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Brady
So you can't have him talk without having him do a horrifically offensive voice.
Katie Nolan
Horrifically offensive. I'll ask because I don't know, are we there? Are we there? Where an Irish accent is horrifically.
Brady
I mean, if it's not. All right, if he is authentically Irish, if he is Dolores O'Rearden out here actually doing Rest in Peace, actually doing this voice, and it's really his.
Katie Nolan
She never thought she was getting brought up in a mascot. She's. We're. She's rolling over, going, Wally's birthday was this weekend.
Brady
He's basically Michael Caine in a Muppet Christmas Carol out here. Or he's just in a different movie than everybody else.
Katie Nolan
It's just like, imagine showing up and you're like, I gotta go do a. It's like smoking a full pack of cigarettes outside on your way in. Like, I gotta do six hours with a bunch of non talking anthropomorphic animals, one of which is going through the same amount of pain as I am. And we can't even commiserate because he's a bear who doesn't talk and I'm a guy and it's just tough. Also, I bet the kids are like, we don't wanna take a picture with you. You're just a. You just look like my uncle. Ew. Why do you dress like that? You're not cuddly or snuggly.
Isabella
You're smelly.
Katie Nolan
You're smelly, but not because of your costume.
Brady
I'll say. The rest of them are smelly. He's actually the least smelly one out there.
Katie Nolan
In true Red Sox fashion, they went on to lose that game. Also, I think this was also. Was this the same game that Ranger who is now. Is it Ron Hare? Ronier.
Brady
He's just Ranger.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, but he's changed it this year. He said it's okay if you still want to call me Ranger. But I do I'm going to start going by my real name and I believe it's. It's Ron Hare. But again.
Brady
Oh, I didn't know that.
Katie Nolan
Fake fan. I I was this the same game? He left early from his start Sunday sick. So he left early with a hamstring injury, which I don't love. He was one of the only things kind of going right for us. And even then it was barely going right, but it was that. And then he left the game early and then again, not the only thing. Just in a true summation, this game fully summed up the Red Sox season because I had heard rumors. I saw Gabriel Star, she writes for the Globe, I think for the Sox. I saw her tweet that she thought a blown proposal had occurred at the end of this game. And I have since found video. Where did I find the video? Oh, John Henry, the owner's wife posted the video of it on her Instagram story and it was of a pretty much we think botched proposal where a man asks a woman on the Jumbotron if she'll marry him. They have it on the font on the bottom. It says like whatever their name is, will you marry whatever his name is? And we don't really. She's got the camera's a little bit but she keeps cheating to put her back towards the camera. And you could tell she's kind of looking at him making a face that to me just reading vibes based on nothing. I didn't lip read nothing. The vibe is didn't we talk about this. Hey, so don't want to say no to you here. Putting me in a tough, tough spot. But I think you know why I'm not gonna say yes. And then you see him, like, kind of look at the camera and look at her and nod. And then he kisses her, which he
Brady
leans in for the kiss.
Katie Nolan
Sure. He kisses her, which I think is his way of going. And take the camera off. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's the final moment. But the camera stays on a little longer and you see him kiss her, which women don't get enough credit in this moment where she is not losing it on him. She is not humiliating him. You can tell she's going, I don't want to humiliate you right now, but no, I don't know what the circumstances of that are. But you see her give him a kiss back. And then again she, like, looks away from the camera and just goes like. And we'll talk about this later. And so really a good game. Really good game. The Sox, you're wondering what their record is.13 and 21 1. So happy birthday to Wally. Hope that. That was fun. I hope you figure out your beef with those other area mascots. Like, where was the revolution? Where was their mascot? Do they have a mascot?
Brady
Probably looks a lot like. Like Patriot Pat. Yeah, Patriot.
Katie Nolan
Maybe they can't be in the same place at the same time. Maybe they just share that costume.
Chris
Slide the Fox.
Katie Nolan
Oh, what?
Chris
Slide the Fox.
Katie Nolan
S L, I, D, E. S, L, Y, D, E. And I have eight follow up questions. Why A Y, why a Fox?
Isabella
What team is this?
Katie Nolan
This is the New England Revolution. A soccer.
Chris
A mischievous yet compassionate mascot. Slide is a fan favorite who has been known for his trash talking with other mascots, even outside of mls.
Isabella
Oh, my God. He like. He like perpetually has his eyebrows like this.
Katie Nolan
Okay, interesting.
Isabella
The eyebrows are sewn on this way changed.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's a guy. You don't want to date that guy. The guy who's constantly giving you that face.
Chris
He graduated from the school of hard fox in 1996.
Katie Nolan
Jesus Christ.
Brady
Pass.
Katie Nolan
Fan favorite. They can just say that.
Chris
His favorites include. His favorites include slip and slide. The game. Fantastic. Mr. Fox.
Isabella
Okay.
Katie Nolan
Of course.
Chris
Fox Mulder. The TV character, Michael J. Fox.
Katie Nolan
Okay, great.
Chris
The actor Africa by Toto.
Katie Nolan
Great.
Isabella
Okay.
Brady
Why? Why?
Katie Nolan
That's. Maybe that's where foxes are from originally.
Chris
And his pet peeves include mascots outside of New England, roadkill and things that hibernate.
Isabella
Okay, tell me, tell me what you
Katie Nolan
think about that, Katie.
Chris
Although his appearance has changed dramatically over the years. Use of FGH Fox growth hormones have never been proven.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, because his forearms are crazy. He's got. Why he's got like Popeye forearms.
Brady
One place he loses me immediately. Call for pricing. Put on the website.
Katie Nolan
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Brady
Put on the website.
Katie Nolan
Well, I mean, at least it's better than going. You want to know about our mascot, you must just want to buy them. You know, the other one didn't even. The Canes didn't even write up a fake bio.
Brady
He just went right to like the price for five pictures of his feet.
Katie Nolan
I don't see the connection to. Which, by the way, was pricey. I don't see the connection to the revolution at all. And it feels like they didn't even try to, but okay, good for them. That's why I didn't get the invite. You're creepy. You were, you were scaring the hoes. So you didn't get the invite. When you show up to the party and you're always like this. And I also think not only is his eyebrow up, I think he's also talking out the side of his mouth. I think he's also got a sly little grin. And I don't trust a guy like that. You're not invited to my birthday party.
Isabella
Can you stop looking at me like that?
Katie Nolan
And then. Okay, two last things to get to. And then we're gonna get to what you can watch if you want to watch some sports this week. The Miami Grand Prix happened this week for the. This weekend for the race part of it. Chris, are you our expert on this? Did anything, anything worth mentioning happen at the Miami grand prix? This is F1, correct?
Chris
Correct. Yeah, Nothing that I saw. I. I have not been watching the races this season since it went to Apple TV plus Funny. Just harder for me to watch. Well, funny was on espn.
Katie Nolan
I should have pointed this out to you. Over the weekend, some eagle eyed fans found that if you don't have Apple TV plus or maybe you. You forgot to renew your subscription or you can afford it right now if you just went on Sunday to FL511, which is the Florida 511 website for I guess probably like the Department of Transportation. I assume you could find their live traffic cameras and catch the action by clicking on those. So there were like multiple camera angles of like certain turns where it looks so weird to see F1 cars like crowd around a turn on like a crappy, you know, CCTV type camera. But that's where you could have watched it for Free.
Chris
So that would have been handy to know.
Katie Nolan
I should have texted you.
Brady
If there's a way to do something for free, the Internet will find it.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. And that is the. The best way to do it. So who won?
Chris
Kimmy Antonelli. Again.
Katie Nolan
And. We don't care. That doesn't. We don't care.
Chris
We don't. Oscar Piestri came third. Landon Aris came second. Charlotte Claire finished eighth, but I think that was because of a penalty.
Katie Nolan
Charles leclerc. We love him.
Chris
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
Okay, so that was that. That's us doing the Miami Grand Prix. Can I call it Grand Prix, or do I have to call it the Grand Prix?
Chris
I say Grand Prix.
Isabella
Grand Prix.
Katie Nolan
Even Chris says Grand Prix. I thought you would have said Grand Prix. Grand Prix the way you do in Australia.
Chris
Definitely used to say that as a kid.
Katie Nolan
Brady brought the tea. It was all influencers. This was the big influencer event of the weekend. And Alex Earle was seen chatting with Brad Paxton Barrios, her ex. What team is he on now? Brady?
Brady
I think he. It's either the Texans last year. I don't know if he's employed still.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. So that was. She approached him. I saw. So that's interesting. She looked very pretty, which is what you hope in that moment, you're like, I'll approach him. I look banging. So I'll go tap him on the shoulder, have him turn around and see me in this red dress and lose his mind.
Brady
The fact that Alex Earl and Alex Cooper.
Katie Nolan
I'm so mad at those two. I'm still so mad that we got this far into this grief that we thought something was coming and nothing ever came. I'm, like, really pissed off about it.
Brady
They got a parody on Weekend Update on SNL this week, which means. I feel like more of a. At least other people are as clueless on this as I am.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, whatever. That made me mad. Like, give us the tea. We all tuned in now. Let us now.
Isabella
It's been so long.
Katie Nolan
Now it's Jump the Shark.
Isabella
It's definitely like, she's probably saving Alice, Alex Earl. Saving her response for what? Like that reality show you'd mentioned.
Katie Nolan
Probably. Doesn't that feel like what it's gonna be?
Isabella
Yeah, at this point. Whatever.
Katie Nolan
It's frustrating. Whatever. We're over it. We don't even care anymore. Yeah, we don't even care. Okay. Did you guys see Malik Willis through a first pitch? So Malik Willis had a bit of a. Was it a game? A breakout game for the packers in the postseason.
Brady
It was like, see, he had, like, Kickstarts.
Katie Nolan
It was a couple he just, like, had, and then he got hurt, and then he got traded. Question mark. Free agency. How did he leave? So he left for the Dolphins in free agency, and so he's with the Dolphins now. Isabella, people are excited to see what's going to happen here. Again, he had a great showing. Not a. Not a big sample size, we don't really know, but he did look pretty impressive. Okay, so they have him come in and throw the first pitch for the Marlins, which are in Miami, which is where the Dolphins are. Little crosstown promotion on Friday.
Isabella
Cute.
Katie Nolan
And so he threw out the first pitch at that game. My screen has gone black here in the studio. I don't know if it's cause you're about to watch something.
Isabella
Sorry. Yeah, it's. Cause I made it full screen, but I can.
Katie Nolan
That's okay. Let's take a look. We're gonna play you his first pitch, so you can sort of describe it to the crowd here.
Isabella
He's on the mound.
Katie Nolan
She sounds exhausting.
Isabella
Looking good.
Katie Nolan
Knee up. Throw.
Isabella
Oh.
Katie Nolan
Oh. It went up and out and hit the backboard.
Isabella
I don't know what you call that in stadium.
Katie Nolan
That's close. Not good.
Isabella
Not good.
Katie Nolan
Like, not even close to a strike. Yeah, Nothing real fancy in the delivery, but just a terrible, terrible pitch.
Isabella
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
One of the worst we've seen recently, if we're not counting, which we aren't, because we love them, the US Figure skaters, in the first pitch they threw out for the Mets. If you have not seen. We can't. It's a. It's an audio medium, so we will do it. No favors. You have to do yourself a favor and look it up and watch it. Today you could watch it 11 times. There's 11 different people in it. And each time watch a different person, it goes wrong in a different way. And the fact that can't even figure
Brady
out how many pitchers are being thrown,
Katie Nolan
the fact that it was for the Mets makes it even more beautiful. Please go watch that. But this, this, we've got an athlete, a quarterback, someone who's used to throwing the ball. A horrendous showing, maybe because a football's
Isabella
bigger and like heavier. So maybe like the baseball was just like. It's just. It was a different feel to it.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. I was gonna say this led to a lot of Dolphins fans crashing out about how they're scared this guy's gonna suck. Then somebody said, hey, no worries. Don't stress. We've had really good quarterbacks throw really bad first pitches. Before. And Patrick Mahomes first pitch was brought out as an example. Now, this was his first pitch in 2015 for the Rangers, and it was bad. What's. What I thought was funny was Patrick Mahomes then came out and said, first of all, I thought we got rid of this. I thought we got rid of all evidence of this happening. What the hell? Why is this being brought up? And then he said, can somebody please tweet out my other first pitch with the Royals? Which then somebody did, and that one was much better. We have seen quarterbacks throw first pitches before. Tom Brady in 2015 at Fenway. I believe that one was in the dirt.
Brady
In the dirt.
Katie Nolan
Do you throw from the mound?
Chris
Through.
Brady
From the mound? Yeah, but in the dirt down to the left.
Katie Nolan
In 2025, we saw Joe Burrow at Fanatics Fest also throw one in the dirt.
Brady
In the dirt down to the left.
Katie Nolan
Down to the left. April 21, 2026, we saw Fernando Mendoza, first overall pick, who says he's not going to go to the White House because that's when ota otas start, which was like PR magic. He's like, I don't think I should miss practice. I'm new here. He threw a perfect first pitch with a football motion at a Marlins game. So it. But I do think, Isabella, not everyone
Isabella
can be Fernando Mendoza.
Katie Nolan
That's so true.
Brady
It's a very different. Different throwing motion. The ball is so different. Yeah, you're not like, whipping a football.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. Like, you're holding the elbow first.
Brady
It's. You're cocking it back and bringing it down.
Katie Nolan
Brady, grab the football. The baseball that I'm sure you have just off camera there and show us how you see. It's crazy. It really. It really is. Says a lot about a man. What ball he has just out of frame on his camera. All right, give me one second.
Isabella
I could show you. Hold on one second. I got a ball for you.
Katie Nolan
Okay. Isabella has. Chris has a basketball. Is that a special basketball in any way, Chris? Oh, also a. Yeah, the basketball. Australian Open tennis ball.
Chris
Signed LeBron ball.
Katie Nolan
Okay. Assigned LeBron ball. Isabella's having trouble with the headset. But she does have a. But she does. Okay, wait. Sorry. Brady, what's your ball?
Brady
This one was 2022 Home Run Derby. That's not even gonna show up. There's just a whole bucket of baseball sitting over here.
Katie Nolan
Cool. And then, Isabella, what do you got?
Isabella
I got a. I got a Frank's Red Hot Football.
Katie Nolan
A promotional football sent to us by Frank's Red Hot for no reason.
Brady
Do we not also have a Taco Bell football in there, too?
Katie Nolan
I think the Frank's Red Hot Taco Bell. It was a collab between the two. But no Taco Bell branding on the football.
Isabella
No, there is. There's the little bell right there.
Katie Nolan
She just didn't want to mention it. They're just two completely different balls. And I feel like it's actually makes us look silly as sports fans. I understand the joke, but it makes us look silly to think that throwing a baseball is the same skill as throwing a football. The release point is entirely different. The where you're trying to get it to go, like, the target is lower than it would be in an average football. So it's like a. It's a completely different skill set.
Isabella
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
And I'm sure he knew that going into it. I'm sure Malik Willis was like, hope this goes well. And then it didn't. So now you just got to kind of lean in and go, yeah, I suck at baseball. That's why I play football.
Brady
He also aimed high. You always say, like, the worst thing you can do is skip it short. Like, just aim high.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. You know, he took that a little too seriously. I think he aimed a little too high. That is also the. My takeaway between. The difference between, like, throwing a softball and throwing a football was like, you're releasing it earlier. You're releasing the football while it's up by your. Up here. Whereas the baseball, it was like sort of, you know, as it passed, you're. And so that, I think, explains to me why it looked like that. But I saw people really losing their mind. So I just wanted to say you can be a good quarterback and throw out a bad first pitch.
Isabella
I agree.
Katie Nolan
Everybody calm down. Was that it? Did I get to everything?
Isabella
I think you did.
Katie Nolan
I mean, it's been eight hours. Did you say no?
Brady
No. But by design, no. Go to break.
Chris
By the way, we've got a message from Steve that explained why the New England Revolution mascot is a fox. Because they play in Foxborough.
Brady
Nope, not good enough.
Katie Nolan
Of course.
Isabella
There you go.
Katie Nolan
Thank you, Steve. But still. And thank you, Steve. That's not close enough for me. It needs to be like a fox that fought in the Revolutionary War. It has to be like a fox who believes that there should be no taxation without representation. There needs to be some sort of a revolution to the whole thing. Or they need to make a joke about the red coat of the fox. I need something to tie it to either the soccer or the. It's too tenuous. And that's why you didn't get an invite. Sly that and your creepy energy. You might not be a creep, but you come into these situations looking like a creep and you're not doing enough to unpack that. Okay, so the girls are getting scared. We can't have scared girls. They're not fun to be around. Let's go ahead and take a quick break. Let's take a quick break and when we come back, our master editor Chris has put together a list of what you can watch outside of the playoffs. I guess because we already kind of talked about those. And we're back. We've reached the towards the end. We're at the pointy end of this here podcast and as it is the first podcast of the week, Chris has put together a list of all the things across sports that you could watch if say you wanted to catch some sports this week. Chris, what's the first thing we've got?
Chris
The first thing is cycling. We've got the La Vuelta Feminina.
Katie Nolan
Of course.
Chris
Yeah, of course. We got an email about this from Stacey who writes in and says hello Katie and the casualties.
Isabella
Hi.
Chris
Wanted to give a shout out to an amazing women's cycling event. La Vuelta Feminina. Women's pro cycling is such a fun road. Pro. Women's pro road cycling.
Katie Nolan
Wow. Nice.
Chris
Say that.
Katie Nolan
Pro road cycling.
Chris
Okay, fine. It's such a fun and fascinating watch because it's so unpredictable with many different riders winning races based on their strengths and specialties. La Vuelta is a multi stage race in Spain. This year's La Vuelta Femenina is taking place separately from the men's version, which means we should be getting the full broadcast each day, not just starting once the men's broadcast is done. And if you want to watch, you can find it on Peacock. So it's already begun. You can find each stage on Peacock at 9:35am Eastern each day between now and Saturday, with Saturday being the final stage. And also if you're a cycling fan, the Giro d' Italia also begins later this week. It'll run from May 8 to May 31. So we're getting into some, some fun cycling at this stage.
Katie Nolan
Saturday, May 9th and then the next next day, Sunday, May 10th. Don't forget you guys, Mother's Day.
Chris
Mother's Day.
Katie Nolan
So important to remember women's pro road cycling. And so that's they just do like different legs and then they stop for the day and then they do legs and then correct.
Chris
And then like they'll have like sprints one day and then they'll have like mountain climbs another day, things like that.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, yeah. Wow. Badass. Okay, so that's then what else we got?
Chris
WNBA begins this week. We have a double header on Friday, Connecticut at New York at 7:30pm Eastern on ION. And then following up on that, Golden State, the Velks at Seattle at 10pm Eastern on ION. I don't know if you saw we talking Martas Suarez.
Katie Nolan
What happened?
Chris
Suarez getting waved by the Valkyries, the player that they traded Florje Johnson for.
Katie Nolan
I'm pissed. I mean, look, I saw a lot of people go like, oh, people are gonna be normal about this. Which made me go, okay, so this is a regular thing. I guess that happens. But to me, I go, what the hell? I think the best explanation I saw is that feels like the Valkyries maybe didn't want to pay any of those first round draft pick salaries and so they just basically took somebody, traded her away and then waved. Didn't they also do that with Caitlyn Chen last year? Didn't they like wave, yeah, her and then end up bringing her back? So I don't really. Look, I don't get in the weeds on the business of sports because I don't care. But I do think it's a weird, just a weird move to have been like thinking I had flaw J. And then. Then I'm like, okay. Suarez also seemed. I like learned some stuff about her and now she's been waived. So I. I don't know. I guess in Natalie Nakase I trust and. And I'll just follow her blindly into the. They still have one of the best valuations in the W. We'll take that. Right?
Chris
Yep.
Brady
Monday for the wma. Also, do you see Natasha Cloud to Chicago?
Katie Nolan
I did see that.
Brady
Oh, and they waved Haley Van Lith.
Katie Nolan
I did not see that.
Brady
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
What's that about?
Brady
It seems like that's the roster spot. They play the same position. Haley couldn't get on the court last year. She was more famous than good last year, it seemed like. But still, it's a big name to just be waving.
Katie Nolan
I know. I agree. It's also such an interesting thing. I feel like we're gonna have to grapple with more as like the nil come into the I think it kind of happened with Shador Sanders where you're like more famous than good. Just such an interesting thing we never really had to deal with before because if you were famous it was because usually because you were really good. Just something to keep an eye on as we. But that's crazy that they released her. But WNBA season starts and so I'm very excited for this. Isabella, how you feeling about your libs?
Isabella
I'm
Katie Nolan
in general, basketball wise, just the bat. How you feel about your basketball Libs.
Isabella
I'm looking forward to it. I'm actually trying to get tickets.
Katie Nolan
Hell, yeah.
Isabella
There's this one. I don't think. I don't remember which one. I wanted to go to the Pride night. I know there's an AIPI night, but I don't know. I think it's this one, and I don't think I would be able to go, but I'm excited.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, it'll be fun. You're gonna. Did you want to ask if, like, anybody else here wanted to maybe, like, go with you, or was that just sort of, like, a thing you wanted to do on, like, your personal time?
Isabella
I would totally be down to go.
Katie Nolan
Who were you gonna go? Who?
Isabella
I didn't have anybody to go.
Katie Nolan
You were just gonna get tickets?
Isabella
Yeah. And go alone and then figure out who wants to be my buddy that day.
Brady
But, yeah, I mean, it's an easy train ride. Fine. If you need me to make it there.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. Brady will come in from Maryland, and Chris can come in from. Where are you Charlotte?
Chris
No, Greensboro.
Katie Nolan
Greensboro. And how far are those. How far is Charlotte from Greensboro?
Chris
Air and a half.
Katie Nolan
So I was close enough. Yeah, not too bad. And your name is Chris. You said Chris. What's the third thing they can watch if they want to watch some sports?
Chris
College lacrosse tournament. Both the men's and women's are coming up this week. The brackets. I don't know if you saw this. Were leaked by the NCAA before the selection show.
Katie Nolan
What?
Chris
So the. The drama of the selection show. Not so great.
Isabella
I love drama.
Katie Nolan
But they blew it. They were like, this is what it is.
Chris
Everyone knew all the matchups. I. I think it was like, 20 minutes before the actual selection show.
Katie Nolan
Jesus.
Chris
So that wasn't great. Maryland. Brady's. Maryland is the number three seed in the women's bracket. They'll play the winner of Rutgers against Princeton. That game will be played on Friday at 2pm Eastern on ESPN.
Brady
Maryland plays Sunday at noon. Everybody be there. Maryland Sunday.
Katie Nolan
Noonan Nooner.
Brady
Good guy. They lost a heartbreaker in the Big Ten championship.
Katie Nolan
Oh, no.
Chris
Really?
Brady
Yeah. Well, anyway, with one second left in overtime to Northwestern.
Katie Nolan
Wow, that sucks. To the journalism school.
Chris
But on Saturday, you can pop a nuna for the men's tournament. Saturday, May 9th, you got the men's tournament. UAlbany at number three, UNC at 12:00pm Eastern on ESPNU. Follow that up with army at number eight, Penn State at 2:30pm Eastern, also on ESPNU. Johns Hopkins at number seven, Cornell at 5:00pm Eastern, also on ESPNU. And then Duke at number four, Richmond at 7:30pm Eastern on ESPNU. So plenty of games to to watch on Saturday on the men's side.
Katie Nolan
Damn. No, no. Drexel I was really pulling for. It's the only lacrosse team I've ever really pulled for. I got a friend who's way too into Drexel lacrosse.
Chris
Interesting.
Katie Nolan
Were they close?
Chris
Good question.
Katie Nolan
Well, you'll have to Google it and I'll have to sit here and wait.
Isabella
I root for Rutgers in that one.
Katie Nolan
Nice. Just because of the proximity to where you live. Yeah, yeah.
Isabella
I'll choose Rutgers over Princeton also. Princeton's already got enough.
Katie Nolan
They've got enough going for them. That's how I feel about a bunch of these schools, like Johns Hopkins and Cornell. Like, this is smart schools. Yeah. Stuff going Duke. I don't know a lot about Richmond. I don't want to be disrespectful.
Chris
Drexel lost in the CAA semifinals against Stony Brooks.
Katie Nolan
Devastating. And if they had won and then one, they would have been in or. I don't know how it works and neither does Chris. So here we are over our skis at the end of the podcast, but
Chris
we're trying to highlight it. We.
Katie Nolan

Katie Nolan

Brady

Katie Nolan
