Katie Nolan
Hey, Isabella, did you see over the weekend, a guy in the that bike race, Giro d' Italia got knocked off his bike because he got rammed by a runaway goat. Oh, no. I feel so bad. Did he get back up? Was he able to? Yeah. Continue. Mm. All right. I like it. The goat wanted to join. Yeah. And they can't ride bikes. Yeah. Can they? 100 bikers against one goat. Who do you think is the goat? Yeah, I mean, he's the goat. Hello and welcome to Casuals, the sports podcast that's like chill. It's not a big deal. It's chill. We love sports. We don't care who knows. I'm Katie Nolan. I'm your host, joined today by a very fun guest who'll be here in just a little bit, Carl Tart. And you know, the casualties are also here. If you want to email us, you can do that casuals@kadenalgmail.com our voicemail 646-801-0043 and on IG and TikTok, we are at Casuals, the podcast. Before we get into everything, I obviously have to start out with a yap. And listen, it's about Raphael Devers. Again, I hate to tell you, but we're back in it. Raphael Devers, famously a player on the Boston Red Sox, the baseball team for which I root. Earlier this year we had him in a headline because he was our starting third baseman who we signed to a large contract, and then we signed another third baseman. And people were mad that Rafael Devers was not happy about having to be dh about having to stop playing in the field and just be a bat. And people did not like the way he handled that. Well, we're back, if you'll believe it or not, in this conversation, because the Red Sox first baseman is out for the season and now they are asking Raphael Devers to play first base. And he's like, no. Uh, they told me during the, in a, in a post game interview the other day, he said, basically, like they told me in spring training, put away your glove, say goodbye to your glove. We just want you to hit this year. You're not going to be in the field. And I, it was like an adjustment, but okay. I said, okay. Um, and now they're saying they want me to play first base. If somebody gets hurt in left field, am I gonna have to play left field? Like, when does it. Basically, when does it end? And let it be noted that Raphael Devers. English is not his first language. And I really, I get very uncomfortable when we parse post game interviews for, you know, you know, translation. So people were getting really upset about Rafael Devers not taking one for the team. And let me just first say Rafael Devers named American League Player of the week this week. As defensive, as a DH, he is. His batting average this week was.476. His on base percentage was, I think I wrote.577. It doesn't really look like a five. I'm pretty confident it is. And then op. His OPS was 1387 with. He's tied for first in the American League with eight RBIs this week. He is, um, doing his job as you've asked him to do it really, really well. And I don't know, I, I think in sports we do this thing where we're like, it's. The team is more important. It's about the team is more important than the guy. And it's like, yeah. And I think that's why he's doing really well. And d. Aging. I don't. Where does that line end? Like, at what point are we asking this guy to do stuff he doesn't know how to do? Let's say Raphael Devers goes out there, plays first base, which, yes, historically tends to be a position that somebody who also DHS could play. Right? So I'll give you that. But what if he goes out there and he sucks at first base? Then everyone's like, boo, you suck. We want you off the team. When he's like, I never wanted to play first base. I don't know how to play first Base. Why do we force these people to say like, I don't want to play. I can't do that. And then why is he a dickhead for saying that he. You paid him to play third. It's what he wants to do. He can't do that because you had to sign another third baseman. Fine, I guess. But you know, the entire front office, the. The owner, the chief baseball officer, which to Isabella. I bet that's a very funny name for a job title. And the president. So it was a Henry Breslow and Kennedy all flew out to Kansas City to talk to him the day after that interview, that nine and a half interview, nine and a half minute interview to basically, I guess, have a con. They said that conversations will be ongoing and that they understand and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. But I'm seeing comments online of fans being like, step up and take one for the team. The team's more important than the guy. And I just am wondering, like, when is the guy important and when does he get to. This was the only guy doing anything for the Red Sox for a really long time. They signed him to a huge deal. I feel like was kind of in the wake of the. Of. Well, it was definitely in the wake of the Xander Bogart stuff, which was in the wake of the Mookie Bets stuff. So it felt like a make good for the fan and we are just abandoning him as a fan base. I'm sick of seeing face of the franchise being used as something only to justify a demand being asked of him and never to defend why he shouldn't have to do something that he was never told he was going to do when he signed his contract. It's never like he's the face of the franchise, so he can just be DH because that's what we asked him to do. It's. You're the face of the franchise. You need to step up and do everything. We want. We're getting better at this in society, but we need to emphasize it more in sports. Work is not your family. Even if they say we're like a family here, we're like a fan, we have like a family relationship. That's your job, honey. And the second that that family quote unquote doesn't think you're adding any value to them or they're done with you, they will cut you loose. So I just feel like very frustrated for him. And I'm very frustrated by baseball fans because it's. They're like, that's how we do it. That's what you do you just. You just go to first base and play first base. And maybe he will, but I just think the immediacy of everyone going like you better, you better or I hate you Raffy Devers. It's like what the fuck? How are we? What if he sucks? Just something to think about. You know who doesn't suck though? Carl Tartt. That's our guest today. Wouldn't it be funny if he did? And I just had him here and I made you listen to him. You might know he's a comedian, he's an actor, he writes on snl. You may know him from Upright Citizens Brigade. He was a former co star of Grand Cru on NBC. You might listen to some of his many podcasts, the Hollywood Handbook, Flagrant Ones, Filthy Ones, Foosballs, and then a new Sopranos Watch along podcast, XOXO Bada Bings. Which just by name alone, I'm in. It's Carl Tart. For 140 years, MultiCare has been in Washington prioritizing long term solutions, partnering with local communities and expanding access to care. Katie Nolan
Hi Carl.
Carl Tart
Hi.
Katie Nolan
Thank you for being here.
Carl Tart
Thank you for having me.
Katie Nolan
It's an honor, truly an honor. We have so much to get to and so much to talk about. I figured we would start with basketball.
Carl Tart
Basketball.
Katie Nolan
Though I'm not thrilled as a Celtics fan to be talking about it.
Carl Tart
I get it.
Katie Nolan
Are you, what are you again? You're a Clippers fan.
Carl Tart
I'm a Clippers fan. Yeah.
Katie Nolan
That's right.
Carl Tart
So I moved to LA when I was like 8 years old.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
And I just, I've always been a fan of the underdog team. Like, and so I moved there as a kid and I was in like social program and I grew up with a single mom, so I was like big brothers, big sisters program, boys and girls club, all that type of stuff. And the Clippers would send free tickets all the time. Honestly, it was probably just like a weird tax skirting thing for Donald Sterling, who was a bad guy.
Katie Nolan
Oh yeah, I had heard that.
Carl Tart
Yeah, yeah, yeah. You probably have heard a couple stories about him. He's pretty bad dude.
Katie Nolan
Perhaps.
Carl Tart
But he, he, they would send free tickets. So we would go to those games a lot. And you know, you start off in the upper deck and then like somebody working there be like, hey little dude, you can move down if you want to. Nobody's here. They would be really empty games all the time at the LA Sports arena. And then when they moved to the Staples center now crypto.com arena, it was still pretty empty. But they got this really fun team when I was in fifth grade which was like Lamar Odom, Darius Miles, Elton Brand, Quinn Richardson, Keon Dueling Chris Wilcox. And they like invigorated that, that fan base. And it was so much fun. And those guys were way more accessible back then. Like, you would see those dudes walking around the mall. They'd be at high school basketball games because they were kids, like came out of high school. So he was only like 18 and it just felt Accessible for somebody who was still trying to fit in in la.
Katie Nolan
Right.
Carl Tart
And on the other. On the other end, Shaq and Kobe. Jack was my favorite player growing up.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
But they just felt like, too big. It's stratospheric.
Katie Nolan
Right.
Carl Tart
Like, it was. It was too big. And I didn't. Also had, like, a stepdad who was a huge Laker fan, so you can't have that. Literally in my DMs today, mad at something that I posted, like, he's always been. And so I kind of was like, man, bro, you not my dad, bro. I'm going with the other guys.
Katie Nolan
That's right.
Carl Tart
Probably one of the worst mistakes I've ever made.
Katie Nolan
Well, it built character.
Carl Tart
It built a ton of character.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
I have the most character. I have a thousand. I'm a man of a thousand faces. I have so many characters.
Katie Nolan
So true.
Carl Tart
Yeah, I. I got into it like drugs.
Katie Nolan
It sounds like it was like drugs. They gave you a little taste of the tickets. You went and then you were like, I'm into this.
Carl Tart
They would host events.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
Where they would, like, like Michael Ola with Candy. Taught me post moves.
Katie Nolan
Very cool.
Carl Tart
Probably why my post moves weren't that good.
Katie Nolan
I was gonna say. You still have good post moves or not.
Carl Tart
Yeah, yeah. I can still get out and post. Especially now that I'm in my older years and move a lot slower.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
I'm in my Yokage era right now.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. Pool, basketball. But on the court. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Carl Tart
I definitely have. Am thankful for the post moves.
Katie Nolan
Yes, of course. Yeah. All right. Well, the Clippers, unfortunately, they lost to Jokic. They did.
Carl Tart
And I'm on a campaign right now. So after. After the NBA. The NBA draft lottery was last night.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
And miraculously.
Katie Nolan
Yes.
Carl Tart
The. The.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
I think the. The probability of the order being Dallas, San Antonio 76ers or whatever it is. Dallas, I think it was like 0014. It shouldn't have happened. And I've been in. I've been in a big battle with Dallas fans over the past few years. Because of the podcast that you joined us on, the flagrant ones. I am very, very critical of. Of Luka Doncic. And then he comes to the Lakers and a lot of them jump ship, which I think is disgusting.
Katie Nolan
A lot of Mavericks fans. Yeah, Yeah.
Carl Tart
A lot of Mavericks fans jump ship.
Katie Nolan
Disgusting. Why?
Carl Tart
You don't just give up on your team.
Katie Nolan
Sure.
Carl Tart
This is one of the characters that I was taught being a Clippers fan.
Katie Nolan
Yes, of course.
Carl Tart
You don't just give up.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. What if the team has given. What if it feels like the team has given up on you and I get that.
Carl Tart
I understand. I still feel like maybe just have, like, a secondary team.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. Okay.
Carl Tart
Like, for me, growing up, I was a LeBron guy.
Katie Nolan
Yep.
Carl Tart
So, like, Clippers weren't in the playoffs a lot when I was really young. I want to see what LeBron does.
Katie Nolan
Right.
Carl Tart
I'm rooting for this guy.
Katie Nolan
He had a backup.
Carl Tart
He wasn't.
Katie Nolan
You're. You. You weren't, like, loudly rooting for Cleveland. Right.
Carl Tart
Like, it wasn't about Cleveland.
Katie Nolan
Like, LeBron, that was your backup. And that's what you should do. You think when a team stinks or hates you that you love.
Carl Tart
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
You should just have a backup option of who to root for. But you don't leave. You don't abandon.
Carl Tart
You don't abandon. Especially now. Okay, here's why. Here's why. You could potentially abandon if the organization is just absolutely. Like, there's no way we'll ever even compete for a championship.
Katie Nolan
Right.
Carl Tart
There's no way. I don't believe that that's the case in Dallas. And I know a lot of people think it is because it still boggles the mind why they would trade Luka.
Katie Nolan
Crazy.
Carl Tart
It still just makes no sense. Every time you. Well, maybe they're going to move the team to Vegas. No, that doesn't make sense. Well, maybe they want, like, you don't know what it is.
Katie Nolan
You can't.
Carl Tart
You cannot wrap your mind around it.
Katie Nolan
True.
Carl Tart
And so I can see why some people be like, this organization is. But, like, come on, man. Luca has given you some exciting moments, but he ain't giving you a championship. And there's no way to predict the future that he was going to give you a championship.
Katie Nolan
True.
Carl Tart
Probably. So He's a generational talent.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, maybe.
Carl Tart
I hate his guts.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. And why is that?
Carl Tart
I hate his stinking guts.
Katie Nolan
Why?
Carl Tart
That's complicated.
Katie Nolan
Okay, if you had to boil it down.
Carl Tart
If I had to boil it down. He has had some magnificent performances. Against the Clippers, we did beat the Mavericks. We played them with Luka in the playoffs three times, and we beat them twice. Yet revision is history. What do they call it? What are they? Mandela Effect?
Katie Nolan
Sure. It's the cornucopia on Fruit of the Loom logo.
Carl Tart
Chick Fil A. Not having a C in Chick. Or having a C. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Not having a seat.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
When I was a kid, I do not remember particularly having to see the Baron Steen Bears. Yeah. The Berenstein Bear. And Stance.
Katie Nolan
Apparently it's like Berenstain Bears. I don't know, man.
Carl Tart
They think that Luca beat us more than he did. Ah, but he didn't.
Katie Nolan
No.
Carl Tart
He had good performances. But we won the series.
Katie Nolan
Right.
Carl Tart
He may have won the battle.
Katie Nolan
Right. But that doesn't matter.
Carl Tart
We won the war.
Katie Nolan
The battle doesn't move you on.
Carl Tart
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
To the next round.
Carl Tart
And you know, it's just the. I also hate it. Like, I. I do not like the complaining to the refs.
Katie Nolan
Okay.
Carl Tart
Just to get out on going back on defense.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
He complains to the refs when he makes shots. He wide open three. And he's complaining to the W R Wes.
Katie Nolan
He's complaining to the. We being a big baby.
Carl Tart
I mean, honestly.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
He like. That's my issue with a lot of year old guys coming over.
Katie Nolan
Damn.
Carl Tart
A lot of them do that.
Katie Nolan
Speak on it.
Carl Tart
No, I can't. I can't. I don't know your fan base. You. I might get some death threats.
Katie Nolan
I don't know the exact percent odds of this specific situation you outlined, but I will say the Dallas mavericks getting the first overall pick had a 1.8% chance of happening.
Carl Tart
Yes.
Katie Nolan
Last night.
Carl Tart
Yes.
Katie Nolan
And they got it. This is the second time in franchise history they've had the number one overall pick. They are the fourth longest shot to ever win the draft lottery behind the 93 Magic, the 14 Cavaliers and the 08 Bulls. The Jazz, Wizards and Hornets had the three worst records in the NBA. This is. I don't know, the way the NBA does this. It just feels like it's. I know it's to discourage people from tanking.
Carl Tart
Tanking. Yes.
Katie Nolan
But it just feels like at a time when everybody's looking for a conspiracy about something.
Carl Tart
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
This feels just too rip.
Carl Tart
I mean, I couldn't believe it.
Katie Nolan
I know.
Carl Tart
And the fact that the. Listen. The fact that the number one guy coming out of college.
Katie Nolan
Here's a Warrant Cooper flag.
Carl Tart
Waving the white flag. I. It just. The Dallas thing.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
Look at their history the past 25 years. Like, they love a white superstar. He's going to be so good.
Katie Nolan
You think?
Carl Tart
I'm excited for him.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
Happy that he's American.
Katie Nolan
Okay. This is not one of those European what's.
Carl Tart
Listen, I'm proud to be. I'm a patriot when it comes to my sports.
Katie Nolan
Good.
Carl Tart
Except for Boston.
Katie Nolan
Okay. What's that? We can't be. We're the Patriots. We are the.
Carl Tart
Yeah. It's a LA thing.
Katie Nolan
Okay.
Carl Tart
It's that rivalry. I know. And I know I'm not a Laker fan.
Katie Nolan
Look, we don't think about the Clippers.
Carl Tart
If I'm honest, I know that's what everybody says we don't think about.
Katie Nolan
It's not the Kings. Like, I forget, the Kings are in the league, but the Clippers, we don't think about.
Carl Tart
How do you forget the Kings are in the league?
Katie Nolan
I don't know. It's just one of those names that I'm like, Sacramento. Oh, that's right. Sacramento.
Carl Tart
Oh, Sacramento Kings. I thought about the LA Kings.
Katie Nolan
No. Oh, no, no, no.
Carl Tart
Okay.
Katie Nolan
But it's just like, whenever I'm thinking about basketball, it's like, you hit Golden State and then you go to the. And I always forget Sacramento.
Carl Tart
That's crazy.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, my bad. And I've apologized to the fan base many times.
Carl Tart
You don't like basketball, though. I get it.
Katie Nolan
No, I hate it. Which is.
Carl Tart
I was actually rooting for y' all.
Katie Nolan
I heard the Celtics won. Did they win last night? I didn't hear. Okay. The Celtics lost. The Celtics lost to the Knicks. And now after game three, I was like, this is. The Celtics. Got it. Finally, we got the. The shots are falling. We're not missing a thousand percent of the shots and losing by one. So I was like, we got this figured out. It felt to me, I may have even said on a podcast, I'll regret it felt over. It felt like the. Even though the Celtics were down in the series, they felt up.
Carl Tart
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
And then last night, the New York Knicks have now taken a commanding three one series lead after the Celtics after defeating Celtics at home, 121 to 113. To make matters worse for the Celtics, Jason Tatum suffered what appears to be, and I think. Still not confirmed as of recording this podcast, an Achilles injury.
Carl Tart
Still not confirmed. Which is crazy. Get that man in a surgery so we can know.
Katie Nolan
Is that what it is, a surgery? Is that the one I watched on Tick Tock with the celery? I watched a person show with two pieces of celery how a doctor surgically repairs a tendon.
Carl Tart
Wow.
Katie Nolan
It's really nasty. No blood because it's celery, but more calories to burn it than it takes to eat it. Did you know that?
Carl Tart
That's right.
Katie Nolan
That's why. That's why it's so popular as a diet food. The Knicks are now one game away from their first Conference finals appearance in 25 years.
Carl Tart
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
You're watching the series, obviously.
Carl Tart
Yeah, I'm watching. And I was rooting for Boston.
Katie Nolan
Thanks.
Carl Tart
Not because of the fans.
Katie Nolan
Okay. I Didn't. You didn't have to say that. Nobody asked.
Carl Tart
Definitely. Because I just want to make it clear to the people who are being introduced to me for the first time.
Katie Nolan
That's right.
Carl Tart
Not because of the fans.
Katie Nolan
They might know you.
Carl Tart
Maybe some of them do, because of the players. I really like Jason Tatum and Jalen Brown.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
And to a lesser extent, Christoph Porzingis.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
Euro.
Katie Nolan
You know, one of those Euros and.
Carl Tart
No, he's. He's fine, I guess. I like Al horford.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. Like Mr. Horford.
Carl Tart
He's older.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
Do it for the older guys.
Katie Nolan
Yes.
Carl Tart
Which is crazy to say. He's only two years older than me, I think.
Katie Nolan
What is he, 30?
Carl Tart
38?
Katie Nolan
Eight, yeah.
Carl Tart
My age, 36. Yeah. I like that team. The team is just a fun team.
Katie Nolan
Coach is cool. Weird.
Carl Tart
Coach is a weirdo. And the Knicks, you know, I've been living in New York since September, and everything you see on Tik Tok of them yelling and screaming and cussing everybody out and being gross. Being gross is true.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
So I kind of don't want. They're already so entitled for a team that hasn't won a championship in 50 years.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
They're already so entitled that I'm kind of like, now you need to stay on the. On the lower realm.
Katie Nolan
It is funny the way Knicks fans talk about the Garden and about the Knicks. Like, it's this. And then you, like, look at the resume, like you said over the last, and you're like, you guys really haven't been.
Carl Tart
No.
Katie Nolan
Doing it.
Carl Tart
They haven't. And the way that they act is.
Katie Nolan
Like, they have to. They have to. What do you think they're gonna go? Well, we're just the humble New York Knicks fans.
Carl Tart
They should be.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
But they're not. And so I want. I want them to remain out of the championship. But, yeah, this year. I mean, this year is looking like they got a shot.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
Here's my conspiracy.
Katie Nolan
Yes. Let's hear it.
Carl Tart
I don't know if you talk about gambling on this show.
Katie Nolan
We sometimes. But we just try to make it so that it's not all gambling all the time, like every other sports thing. But you are a guest, so you can do whatever you want.
Carl Tart
In New York, sports gambling is legal. It is not legal in my other home, which is Los Angeles.
Katie Nolan
It's not.
Carl Tart
It's not. They put. They put the kibosh on that, huh? Yeah. And so here I've been taking full advantage of it.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. I bet.
Carl Tart
And I proceeded to put money on the Denver Nuggets winning the championship this year.
Katie Nolan
Okay.
Carl Tart
After seeing Cooper flag get that, here's my conspiracy theory. Cooper flag, the Lakers trade away. Luca. I mean the, the, the Mavericks, the league basically approves this underground trade that nobody knew about until it happened that.
Katie Nolan
They didn't shop around at all.
Carl Tart
And then all of a sudden, oh, they miraculously with a 1.8% chance end up with the first pick. I think Shay Gilgis Alexander will win the MVP award this year.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
And I think as a compromise to Jokic who everybody feels like should win.
Katie Nolan
The MVP because he's having a better season than he did statistically when he won the mvp.
Carl Tart
Yeah. I don't think he deserved. There was another one where he like it's all messed up.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. It's such an interesting conversation.
Carl Tart
He deserved last year's.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
Absolutely deserved last year's. As, as I, as I say that through gritted teeth. Cause you hate him clinched butthole.
Katie Nolan
Totally.
Carl Tart
He deserved it. He absolutely deserved it. And honestly this year when you see. I think it's a little bit overblown because Shay's numbers offensively and defensively finishing in top five in both of those categories, which Yokage is not at all even sniffing a top five defender. I think that puts him over the. Over the top.
Katie Nolan
Sure.
Carl Tart
And they had the better team.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
But like he's not going to win. Y. I think Shay is going to get it this year.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. And YIC won't. And then as a make good, they're.
Carl Tart
Going to give him the championship. I don't think either team any. I don't. They're going to hand it to him. Don't even, don't even play the finals.
Katie Nolan
They're going to get. The NBA is going to go. Just take it.
Carl Tart
Just take it, bro.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
Like, I mean we're going, we're going to do the finals as like a, you know, formality. Formality. We going to play it.
Katie Nolan
But like you basketball O look at us go. Dribble, dribble, dribble.
Carl Tart
They gonna do that.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
But they gonna hand it to him.
Katie Nolan
But they're gonna hand it to them. Okay. I mean this is spicy. Is there any world in which the Nuggets win the championship and you go, no, they won that fair and square. Or do you think if the Nuggets win, you are like, no, that was my conspiracy come come true.
Carl Tart
Just like the old soap opera.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
Maybe in another world. I. I don't think the two east teams that, that are gonna compete for the finals, whether it be the Knicks or the Indiana Pacers can be.
Katie Nolan
Or the Boston Celtics.
Carl Tart
They're not gonna do it.
Katie Nolan
What if. Let's talk about the Pacers because they are shocking the Cavaliers 129 to 109 on Sunday.
Carl Tart
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
The Cavaliers have fallen now to a 31 series deficit against the Pacers. Cavaliers trail by 41 points at the half and had to play the second half without their star player, Donovan Mitchell, who left the game with an injury.
Carl Tart
And that sucks. Same thing. Same thing happened to Celtics, two best teams in the East.
Katie Nolan
He's still a game time decision for game five. He might still still play, which is tonight at seven. The Pacers.
Carl Tart
The Pacers are better than what people gave. Made them out.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
Tyrese Halliburton was voted most overrated player by the other players.
Katie Nolan
Yikes.
Carl Tart
Crazy to me.
Katie Nolan
Rude. Why even vote on. Why are we voting on that?
Carl Tart
Yeah, why.
Katie Nolan
Why are we doing that?
Carl Tart
Why are we even having them do that? That feels like mess.
Katie Nolan
Yes. It's a thousand percent mess. It's like, who of your friends sucks, but everybody thinks they're great.
Carl Tart
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
It's just a way to take somebody down a peg.
Carl Tart
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
So maybe we should do that in like sports media. I feel like.
Carl Tart
Absolutely you should.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
Some of those guys.
Katie Nolan
I got a couple pics.
Carl Tart
Oh, man.
Katie Nolan
But I wouldn't air them out because that's mess. It's anonymous when they do that. Spilled the tea. That's good. That's really good. I was. I got worried that the tea was gonna spill. Yeah. Okay. So the calves are down.
Carl Tart
The calves are down. I. I think that's over. I think that was a. What was 2015 Atlanta Hawks situation where they were the best team in the east that whole year and then just fell in the playoffs. It just didn't come together. Indiana is better than what people make. Make them out to be, though. Tyrese Halliburton has shown that he can be a killer in this series. But then he'll also have a game. He only has four points.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. Well, sometimes you need to take a day off.
Carl Tart
Yeah. And not respecting to the day off that he had before.
Katie Nolan
No, no, no. I mean like a day like you go to work, but you just quite.
Carl Tart
Quit on day off.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. You just phone it in a little. Everybody that watches sports. It's funny, we never like, apply the way we think about our jobs to their jobs, partially because it's a game and partially because they get paid a lot of money to do it. But you gotta have a day at work where you just go Like, I'm here, I'm here. And isn't that enough?
Carl Tart
My job. Currently we have writing night. And traditionally, since the show's been on for 50 years, writing night is the night where you stay super late. Now why. Why did this become a tradition? Because they didn't have computers to send their. To work from home.
Katie Nolan
Right.
Carl Tart
They didn't have Internet. They didn't have that.
Katie Nolan
They had to do it this way.
Carl Tart
They had to do it in their office.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
Typewriter. Bring it back, please. Bring it back, please. Can we please go back to a simpler time?
Katie Nolan
Just turn. Throw this away. Get rid of your phone, all of these. I don't. I'm sick of them. They're making me mentally ill. Can we.
Carl Tart
Go back to typewriters? Something that you and I are too young to even.
Katie Nolan
We never even had. People are probably like, no, the 70 year old who listens to this podcast is going, no, it sucked.
Carl Tart
I still got white out stains on this.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, yeah. No, the ink was a mess.
Carl Tart
Yeah. I. I will say, but writing night traditionally was like, you stay super late and get your work done. And then certain people started being like, I could work in my house, but it's still frowned upon.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
So we stay late.
Katie Nolan
It's like a communal.
Carl Tart
It's a communal.
Katie Nolan
At that point, you have to do it. It doesn't know. I don't know if I said. But it's SNL. He's talking about SNL.
Carl Tart
Saturday Night Live.
Katie Nolan
I mean, a 50 year show. I don't think there's any other.
Carl Tart
I should have said that before. I don't want to sound like I'm like, no, I went to college in Boston.
Katie Nolan
No, you were right. And I should have jumped in and said it. I also am realizing I forgot to ask you the most important thing about the Knicks game that I saw that I wanted to know how you feel. Cardi B. And Stefan Diggs were working together.
Carl Tart
Wow.
Katie Nolan
Following speculation they might be dating.
Carl Tart
Interesting.
Katie Nolan
She's 32, he's 31. And they arrived holding hands at Madison Square Garden on May 12th. I do. Is this. Is this a good idea?
Carl Tart
You know, Katie, I. I wish I could say I cared.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. Oh, man. Not even a little?
Carl Tart
No, I. I don't. I. I truly don't. I wish. I like, I want to be. I want to like that type of gossip.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
I do want to be. I want to be a part of the conversation.
Katie Nolan
Sure. What's missing for you?
Carl Tart
I don't care about those people's personal lives.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. At all.
Carl Tart
Maybe the tiniest bit. I like Offset, but apparently he was bad for her.
Katie Nolan
Oh my God.
Carl Tart
As a toxic relationship.
Katie Nolan
Yes. Get like very bad for her.
Carl Tart
Stefan Diggs. I don't like him. I'm a Saints fan. Miracle at the Meadowlands or whatever. Not Miracle of the Meadowland, Minnesota Miracle.
Katie Nolan
Okay. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yes. He. I just remember there being a video a couple years ago where they were like, who on the team would you not want to date your sister? And everybody said, stefon Diggs.
Carl Tart
I do remember that.
Katie Nolan
And I feel like that makes me go, cardi, be careful.
Carl Tart
She can handle it.
Katie Nolan
Be careful with me. Yeah. I don't know. I. I worry about her. I love that song too. She's just like. I feel like she keeps choices that you're like, she just wants love so badly and she deserves it.
Carl Tart
Yeah, sure.
Katie Nolan
Stefan Diggs is so cute. I just hope that he just be careful. Every.
Carl Tart
Maybe it clicks for him.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. Maybe this. Maybe they.
Carl Tart
Maybe this switches him up.
Katie Nolan
Maybe they find the truest love.
Carl Tart
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
Well, good for them.
Carl Tart
I root for that.
Katie Nolan
Look at you, caring. That's you caring. You did it. Nuggets Thunder, we kind of already talked about, but not really. But they're tied to two. Game five is tonight at 9:30 and OKC. And you think, who's going to win that series?
Carl Tart
Denver.
Katie Nolan
Okay. Because you think it's a gift.
Carl Tart
It's a gift handed. It's a gift.
Katie Nolan
And then the Timberwolves beat the Warriors 117 to 110 on Tuesday night. They've got a three one series lead. Game five is on Wednesday.
Carl Tart
Let's go. Ant's my current favorite player in the league.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. He's fun.
Carl Tart
He's great.
Katie Nolan
He's fun.
Carl Tart
That kid is great.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
Great personality.
Katie Nolan
Yes.
Carl Tart
Cool as hell. I watch his. His web series on YouTube.
Katie Nolan
Oh, yeah, it's.
Carl Tart
It's great.
Katie Nolan
What is it?
Carl Tart
I think it's just called Year five. He's number five now. He's just fantastic.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
Like, it's crazy to be. You know, we go through these eras of our favorite players. I grew up when I first came about into basketball. It was Shaq. Then LeBron came along. LeBron is now fading from my favorite player zone. And it's weird to be like 15 years older than your favorite player.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. It's. Sports in general is a tough. You constantly have to confront your age.
Carl Tart
Yeah. Your mortality is in front of your face all the time you're watching. I googled a player last night and his birthday was January 4th. 2005.
Katie Nolan
I can't do this.
Carl Tart
I can't do this now. My birthday is January 5th.
Katie Nolan
Okay. Close.
Carl Tart
So the day he was being born, I was getting ready to turn 16.
Katie Nolan
You ain't that wild. That's not cool. It's just like, what am I. I can't. It's also. It, like, obstructs my ability to be mad at them.
Carl Tart
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
I look at, like, old dudes who've been in sports media forever, and I'm like, how do you still have this much heat? They're babies.
Carl Tart
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
These are babies.
Carl Tart
That's true. It helps with football. Like, college basketball is hard for me to watch during the season now because it looks like I'm watching a high school game.
Katie Nolan
Yes.
Carl Tart
Sometimes I can watch March Madness football that. You can't see their faces.
Katie Nolan
And that's. And thank you for that.
Carl Tart
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
I think basketball should start implementing a helmet.
Carl Tart
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
Just for us.
Carl Tart
Make them wear helmets always.
Katie Nolan
Just. Or cover your faces. Because it's just. I mean, baseball, you'll see a kid step up to the plate, and you're like, you're 12.
Carl Tart
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
You still get an allowance. What are you doing playing a professional sport?
Carl Tart
Pete Crowe Armstrong.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
Dad.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
Was on that show Heroes.
Katie Nolan
No.
Carl Tart
Yeah. Yeah.
Katie Nolan
Who was his dad on that show?
Carl Tart
I'll look it up.
Katie Nolan
I can do it.
Carl Tart
Pete Crawlstrom's dad. His name is something. Armstrong Daddy Armstrong.
Katie Nolan
Daddy Armstrong. You called him. Not. Not me.
Carl Tart
Big Daddy Armstrong from Heroes.
Chris
Matthew John Armstrong.
Carl Tart
Matthew's dad.
Chris
And as we know, Pete's mom was the mom from Little Big League. Seminal part of all of our childhoods.
Carl Tart
That's right. Ain't that crazy?
Katie Nolan
That's so weird. So when does time stop doing that? Because I don't like it.
Carl Tart
There's got to be something that comes out.
Katie Nolan
I don't. Does it ever stop marching on?
Carl Tart
I hope they come out with, like, a pill that I can just, like, kind of stop aging. I say. I would say around, like, 61. Oh, where.
Katie Nolan
That's where you want to stop.
Carl Tart
Stop aging. Like, not die.
Katie Nolan
Oh. But just, like, I'm just gonna stay 61 forever.
Carl Tart
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
Why wouldn't you just stay 36 forever?
Carl Tart
You can't. You know, there gets us. There gets to be a certain point where it's like, you gotta get a little older, you know?
Katie Nolan
Yeah. This feels a little older. We are a little older.
Carl Tart
We are a little older, but we still. We still party.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. I don't know, dude. I had a drink yesterday.
Carl Tart
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
I don't. I stopped. I kind of like, accidentally stopped drinking because my fiance doesn't drink. So in the Pandemic, we just, like, didn't have alcohol in the house and I kind of faded out. I used to be able to drink and party.
Carl Tart
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
I had one big drink on a podcast yesterday and it fucked me up for the day.
Carl Tart
Damn.
Katie Nolan
The day.
Carl Tart
That's wild. I'm not there yet. We have an after party after every episode.
Katie Nolan
Oh, that's. I mean, that makes sense.
Carl Tart
Yeah, it's awesome.
Katie Nolan
Is it always at the same place?
Carl Tart
No, no, different places. Different places and people find it.
Katie Nolan
Does the host pick who picks the.
Carl Tart
The. The team at the. At the job. They pick the location and get that all set up. And it's always really fun and we stay out really late.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, you gotta come to one. I've been to one.
Carl Tart
You gotta come to more.
Katie Nolan
I came to. When Nate Bargetzi was the host. The first time.
Carl Tart
The first time. Okay. Did you stay out all night?
Katie Nolan
No.
Carl Tart
You gotta come.
Katie Nolan
Okay.
Carl Tart
This week's the finale, unfortunately. So I don't know if I can get you in, but you could get in.
Katie Nolan
No, I can't.
Carl Tart
Then we do the after.
Katie Nolan
After Che's birthday season. Oh, it is.
Carl Tart
Yeah. We'll be out till 8 o' clock in the morning. Come on.
Katie Nolan
8 o' clock in the morning?
Carl Tart
Probably.
Katie Nolan
Probably doing what? Cocaine?
Carl Tart
No, I don't do that. I don't do that.
Katie Nolan
Eight in the morning. You can just naturally get drunk and stay up until 8 in the morning.
Carl Tart
Yeah, and then I go home, sleep all day.
Katie Nolan
You play video games?
Carl Tart
Yeah, I'm not a video. I'm not a huge video game guy. I play for, like, I'll play MLB the show for like an hour and a half, and then I'm like, I'm good. It's time to watch conspiracy videos on YouTube.
Katie Nolan
Can you teach that? Can you teach that skill to me? I've thought about this recently.
Carl Tart
Play all day.
Katie Nolan
I don't have the. I'm all set with this. I go like, well, I came in second, so I gotta go again. Come in first. And then when I come in first, I'm like, well, I'm on a heat. I'm on a heater. I gotta keep going. I never have the muscle that goes like, it's. And that's enough. And we're done.
Carl Tart
MLB the show is so realistic.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
AKA very hard. That I'll be like, on my road to the show and you gotta play the whole minor league season, and I'll just be like, not playing well. Like, letting grounders get past me.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
Striking out every. Like, going over silly. Yeah. And I'm like. And I need a break.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
I need a break because it's making me mad.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
And so I get off, make a snack, watch YouTube conspiracy videos. Conspiracy videos? Videos about RICO cases, forgotten player profiles.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
I watched this guy, 80s life. Who's. Who, like, just drives around the San Fernando Valley being like. That used to be a Puppin Taco, which was a restaurant in the 80s. Like, I like that guy.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
Filming location videos. I like that.
Katie Nolan
This is niche. This is your. I'm getting to know your algorithm.
Carl Tart
I like trains.
Katie Nolan
Okay.
Carl Tart
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
Okay. You like transportation?
Carl Tart
Transportation videos just in general. Yeah.
Katie Nolan
Just like this. Check out this plane and all of the features that it has.
Carl Tart
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
Okay.
Carl Tart
I like massive ships.
Katie Nolan
Okay.
Carl Tart
I wouldn't want to stand next to one, but watching on the video is like, wow, how does somebody.
Katie Nolan
Why wouldn't you want to stand next one?
Carl Tart
It's too. It's too big.
Katie Nolan
It's like, makes you feel uncomfortable, right?
Carl Tart
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
I don't know what that is. It's called something, but I have that.
Carl Tart
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
Where you're, like, around big thing. You're like.
Carl Tart
And not like buildings. No, buildings are fine.
Katie Nolan
We live in New York, so we're fine.
Carl Tart
Yeah. But like walking past, like a cruise.
Katie Nolan
Ship, if you submerged a statue. Don't show me that.
Carl Tart
Oh, yeah, yeah.
Katie Nolan
Don't show me that.
Carl Tart
Those. Those are usually fake though, right?
Katie Nolan
I don't know. But I don't want to see it. It makes my stomach. Like the. The floor of my stomach drops out. I do not like the way it feels. And I feel that way about a big ship. Have you ever been in New York when a cruise ship goes by?
Carl Tart
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
And you look down the street and it just looks like a moving building. That shit's wild.
Carl Tart
It's wild. Cruise ships are crazy wild. Have you been on a cruise?
Katie Nolan
Yeah. And I don't think I ever will again.
Carl Tart
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
It's just not for me. When you think about the closed loop of the. Just the germs and the sewage of just like you're out here in a public. You're sharing of a vessel with strangers.
Carl Tart
My mom loves ships.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. Okay.
Carl Tart
Cruises. Oh, no, that's what I meant to say. Cruises. She don't love ships.
Katie Nolan
I guess she might.
Carl Tart
She might. But she loves cruises. And she's always like, we gotta go. Me and your brother gotta go on a cruise. I go, no, no. My brother's like, absolutely not. And I'm also like, no, what does.
Katie Nolan
She like about them that you can go to multiple places?
Carl Tart
Yeah. Restaurants and the casinos.
Katie Nolan
Oh, yeah.
Carl Tart
She just wants to do that. I'm not going. Yeah, we can get on a plane, go somewhere.
Katie Nolan
I went with my family when I was younger, and it was. I figured out about halfway through that it was just for the all you can eat buffet. My dad just clearly wanted all you can eat all the time, and I don't think that he should have access to that. I think that doesn't exist for a reason. You know what I mean? Like, and so he just ate himself sick the whole trip.
Carl Tart
I love. I do love a buffet.
Katie Nolan
That's that dad stuff.
Carl Tart
Golden Corral.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. I've never been to. I've never even seen a Golden Corral in the wild. Are they. Is that in the South? Is that la?
Carl Tart
Where is in the South? But they just moved a couple out into surrounding areas in. In la. So there's one in, like, Victorville, which I don't get to Victorville very often, but if we're going to Vegas, you know.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
Stop at the Golden Corral.
Katie Nolan
Golden Corral. I mean, Vegas has plenty of buffets, doesn't it?
Carl Tart
Oh, yes.
Katie Nolan
Oh, well, let's see. Should we talk about Giannis? Do you have thoughts on Giannis?
Carl Tart
It's time for him to get out of there.
Katie Nolan
You think?
Carl Tart
I have a great location for him.
Katie Nolan
Okay.
Carl Tart
Giannis, the LA Clippers.
Katie Nolan
Oh, I didn't think you'd say that. What's. Do you have the pitch, Giannis?
Carl Tart
They just put a Golden Corral in Victorville. Me and you can hop into my Jeep Cherokee that I keep shout out. Even though I live in New York, half the time, I still got my Jeep. Shout out to my neighbor Katie Maravich, who is driving it around.
Katie Nolan
Thank you, Katie.
Carl Tart
Thank you, Katie. Shout out to all the Katies out there.
Katie Nolan
That's right. All of them. We love you.
Carl Tart
I've never had a bad experience with a Katie.
Katie Nolan
Oh, my God, I love that. This could be your first. We've got. Still got a little bit of time left.
Carl Tart
I mean, the way you talk about the Clippers. Yeah, but Giannis, Golden Corral, or if you don't want to go to that one, I think there's one in, like, Norwalk. None of them in the. In this LA proper. There's other restaurants, bro. The pizza scene is coming up. Donuts ain't always been crazy. Donuts ain't always been crazy in la.
Katie Nolan
What's happening in the donut space?
Carl Tart
Just. It's always been Bomb LA. Is a donut city.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, that's true.
Carl Tart
In the 70s, a bunch of people moved over from, like, Vietnam and. And bought donut places.
Katie Nolan
Okay, don't tell me. Tell him, Giannis.
Carl Tart
Come on, man. The pink box. What else? Let me see. Yeah, Pizza scenes going crazy out there now.
Katie Nolan
You're not gonna sell him on LA with pizza. I don't mean to jump in, but I just feel like because he's Greek and they. They can get pizza in a lot of different places. A lot of cities could make a better pitch with their pizza.
Carl Tart
All right, Giannis, I'm pulling out the big guns. Tacos. Come on, man. On every block. A truck on every block is true. Late night. Yeah, we go to. We could go to shortstop in Echo Park. We could hit a Dodger game, go to shortstop in Echo Park. Hit the taco truck outside. Outside of Shore stop in Echo Park. It's one of my favorites. Now, maybe it's because I'm coming out the club. Just a bar, but it's a great taco truck, great nachos.
Katie Nolan
Antentokounmpo is exploring whether his best long term fit is remaining in Milwaukee or playing elsewhere. But they have not made a firm decision.
Carl Tart
You don't want to stay in Milwaukee, man. I've been in Milwaukee. But they got Culver's cheese. Culver's pretty good.
Katie Nolan
Isn't there cheese?
Carl Tart
Yeah, they got a lot of cheese.
Katie Nolan
And beer.
Carl Tart
Wisconsin. He ain't drinking beer.
Katie Nolan
He's not.
Carl Tart
Giannis ain't drinking beer. Drinking olive oil.
Katie Nolan
All right, well, Giannis to the Clippers. You heard it here first.
Carl Tart
Yeah, Come on, man. I do really think that Houston should get okc. I think OKC could really use it.
Katie Nolan
Okay, don't listen, Giannis. But why?
Carl Tart
OKC is a good fit for him.
Katie Nolan
Why?
Carl Tart
Chet's not the guy. Okay, you guys.
Katie Nolan
Sorry, Mr. Holmgren. Yeah, yeah.
Carl Tart
You got Shay, you got Jalen Williams. Giannis as that, like that three headed monster is. Is. Is a championship team.
Katie Nolan
Okay. I mean, they could be a championship team without it.
Carl Tart
They could be. I don't think it's happening.
Katie Nolan
Okay.
Carl Tart
Just based off, they should. If they were going to win this thing, they would have swept this team. Although Denver is playing lights out. I don't like this idea that Gianna's got. I mean, jokers got no help. Aaron Gordon is showing up.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, he is.
Carl Tart
Jamal Murray has always been good. And they go, well, he doesn't have an All Star. Jamal Murray should have been an All Star, right?
Katie Nolan
Didn't he get hurt the year that it probably hurt.
Carl Tart
And then he just got edged out a little bit because of voting or something like that. He should have been All Star like two times. So let's, let's cut that out. As if he's not all Star caliber.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, that's great.
Carl Tart
Just because he doesn't have the actual title. Yeah, don't. Let's, let's not act like he's not All Star caliber player. Aaron Gordon is really showing up. He killed us in the first round.
Katie Nolan
Sorry about that.
Carl Tart
Listen, I'm over it.
Katie Nolan
Good.
Carl Tart
They're all dead to me. But yeah, I think okc, if they were really those guys, this series would not be as close as it is.
Katie Nolan
Huh. Interesting.
Carl Tart
And I wonder what the spread is tonight. Do we know what the spread is tonight?
Katie Nolan
We can find out. We can find out pretty easily.
Carl Tart
I wonder if OKC is favorite.
Katie Nolan
What's that game at 10 o' clock?
Carl Tart
I bet 10 o' clock. Easter. Don't you just love that?
Katie Nolan
I do, actually.
Carl Tart
Did we talk about that on. On flagrant ones? I love the, the West Coast Games.
Katie Nolan
9:30. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Carl Tart
I love the west coast games being late.
Katie Nolan
It's great because I'm up late.
Carl Tart
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
And so I'm like. Let me. It's same with hockey. It's been. It's fantastic. Nine thirty. The spread is o. See. Minus nine and a half.
Carl Tart
Interesting. Oh, they go. They rocking with the Thunder tonight.
Katie Nolan
Well, because it's in okc.
Carl Tart
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
Take Denver plus nine and a half.
Katie Nolan
Oh, don't. I mean. Or don't. Or gamble responsibly if. Gamble responsibly if you're gonna. But you also don't have to if you don't want to. You can just pretend to gamble. You can gamble with your emotions.
Carl Tart
Yeah. Take like, don't actually put the money down.
Katie Nolan
Right. Just. Just say.
Carl Tart
Just say you like. It'll. It'll make the game interesting.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
It'll make the game fun to watch for you.
Katie Nolan
I stress out. My brother gambles a lot and he will always be like, who do we think is gonna like. Last night it was, who do you think is gonna hit a home run for the Cubs tonight? And I always stress about like, well, okay, I would say who I think. But then if you put money on it and you lose that money, I'm gonna feel like I screwed up.
Carl Tart
Take yourself out of that.
Katie Nolan
I said, Dansby Swanson. Guess who hit a home run yesterday.
Carl Tart
Dansby.
Katie Nolan
That's right.
Carl Tart
Dany Swanson's. Nice.
Katie Nolan
Just saying you are a fan.
Carl Tart
Yes.
Katie Nolan
Right.
Carl Tart
Yes. New Orleans.
Katie Nolan
So we have to talk about Derek Carr.
Carl Tart
Who that. Let's talk about him.
Katie Nolan
Let me say it, let me say it to the people who don't know. New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr has announced his retirement on Saturday after 11 seasons in the NFL. Carr reported shoulder pain in March and medical scans determined objectively that Derek sustained a labral tear and also had significant degenerative changes to his rotator. Rotator cuff in lieu of surgery that would have jeopardized his 2025 season. At the age of 30, he is retiring with about $195.7 million in career earnings.
Carl Tart
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
17Th highest according to over the cap, not adjusted for inflation, in NFL history.
Carl Tart
Yeah. He's made, he's robbed the league. Now. Let, let me, let me not say that because nowadays I got to watch what I say because people be hearing me.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. I always forget that's what this. Does this microphone thing. Yeah, yeah.
Carl Tart
I'm thinking I'm just having a nice conversation.
Katie Nolan
You're just yapping. Yeah, yeah, I get it. But it's.
Carl Tart
But people, people, people hear me now.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
People like, I've gotten DM slides from people being like, hey, my man.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, I stopped checking those.
Carl Tart
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. They didn't get. They weren't nice. They weren't getting nicer.
Carl Tart
No, no, no, they don't get nicer. Yeah, they don't get nicer.
Katie Nolan
But he, I mean, he made a nice chunk of change. What now? I mean, the Saints drafted Tyler Schuck.
Carl Tart
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
Which we all know because of his dog. He had that cute dog at the draft.
Carl Tart
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
You also have second year QB Spencer Rattler and third year QB Jake Hayner on the roster.
Carl Tart
That's my man right there. Another Fresno State product.
Katie Nolan
Okay.
Carl Tart
About five, nine.
Katie Nolan
So now what?
Carl Tart
You know, here's what I do think.
Katie Nolan
Yes.
Carl Tart
I think we're going to win way too many games next year. You think to lose out on the true son of the Saints, Arch Manning.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. Okay.
Carl Tart
I think we're going to be terrible.
Katie Nolan
Texas quarterback Arch Manning, who would be probably the number one pick the next year.
Carl Tart
Yes. I'm calling 6 and 10.
Katie Nolan
Okay.
Carl Tart
Or 6 and 11.
Katie Nolan
So you think it's going to be like annoying. You're going to do just well enough that you're not going to get Arch.
Carl Tart
That was suck. Let's just think about our conference.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
I feel like in our conference specifically, we'll probably lose to Tampa twice. Probably split with Atlanta because that rivalry is always there.
Katie Nolan
Right.
Carl Tart
Even though Atlanta's Going to be way better.
Katie Nolan
It doesn't matter. It's always the nature of it. It's like you're going to split it.
Carl Tart
And I think Carolina has gotten better.
Katie Nolan
Right.
Carl Tart
And we'll probably split with them or we could potentially beat them twice. Because I'm still not sold on Bryce Young quite yet.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
So I know I was rooting for him. But I'm still not sold on him. So. I think we're gonna win too many games. I think we're gonna win too many. I think we're not gonna make the playoffs. But I think we're gonna win too many games. Derek Carr. I'm sure he's a nice guy.
Katie Nolan
This feels like something you say right before you say a bunch of other stuff.
Carl Tart
But. No, I'm sure that dude's a nice guy. But man, he has had a lackluster career.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. I'm sure he might feel the same.
Carl Tart
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
Right.
Carl Tart
And he did not do us no favors. And there were moments where he made decisions where we could have made the playoffs and he made decisions where he goes. Darren, what are you doing, man? That shoulder probably already was messed up. I hate to see somebody retire because of an injury.
Katie Nolan
Right.
Carl Tart
But I think he'll be fine. He has made so much money and I'm happy that we can take him off the books.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
Minus 10 million. But we got that.
Katie Nolan
Is that how that work? Like I, the, the cap is so confusing in the NFL.
Carl Tart
I don't understand.
Katie Nolan
We're like. Oh, dead space. I don't, Yeah.
Carl Tart
I don't get it. That is, that's where, that's way.
Katie Nolan
I won't be figuring that out.
Carl Tart
Yeah. That's my real casual.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. Come for me if you want. But not gonna do the math. I don't like the math on the management of a billion dollar franchise. I don't care. It's somebody else's job.
Carl Tart
Exactly. And they do it, they do it decently.
Katie Nolan
And they made it confusing on purpose.
Carl Tart
Exactly. So you wouldn't know. So you wouldn't be able to. To.
Katie Nolan
I will let it confuse me. Do you want, would you, would any piece of you want them to sign Aaron Rodgers?
Carl Tart
Yeah. I like Aaron Rodgers. Surprisingly enough.
Katie Nolan
Huh.
Carl Tart
People hate that dude.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. What would you say are your favorite qualities of his?
Carl Tart
Well, I too am just immunized. I'm just playing. I, I don't know. I, I, I think he just, I'm, I'm thinking solely on a football standard.
Katie Nolan
I mean he's, he, he had an ability. I don't know it's been a while and he's been hurt, but he had the ability to make things happen.
Carl Tart
He was electrified.
Katie Nolan
It always felt he couldn't count him out, no matter what. It's like he might just throw it the length of the field and it's gonna be fine.
Carl Tart
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
He'll toss up. I mean, I don't know the numbers, but I bet if you looked it up, percentage wise, the amount of, like, Hail Mary's into the end zone, that ended up actually working out. I feel like he had to be in the top.
Carl Tart
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
Number of quarterbacks that did that.
Carl Tart
Yeah. He's. He's. He was always fun when I was growing up. Maybe I'm like, maybe there's another thing about our mortality that I'm thinking about. Maybe he is too old.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
But I think right now we could use somebody like him.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
Just. He's. But he wasn't good on the Jets.
Katie Nolan
No, he was not. And he. But he was a massive problem. He was a giant headache.
Carl Tart
I mean, maybe he'll force Mickey Loomis to retire and then we can get another GM and we can stop making decisions. Like, not picking Shador Sanders could be.
Katie Nolan
The means to the end, if you think about it.
Carl Tart
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
You were. You're saying you wanted them to pick Shador Sanders?
Unnamed Sports Commentator
Yeah.
Carl Tart
Yes.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. And in this situation, you'd be pretty happy if you had Shador Sanders.
Carl Tart
I'll be really happy. His jersey would be on me right now.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
I was. I was ready to buy the jersey.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
Half fanatics loaded up and they said, Tyler Shaw.
Katie Nolan
Tyler Shaw.
Carl Tart
I saw a video of him yesterday, and he seems like a nice kid.
Katie Nolan
Tyler Shuck. Yeah. Yeah.
Carl Tart
He was talking about his dog.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
He's like, my dog's a good boy.
Katie Nolan
That's right.
Carl Tart
And I'm lying. He's not. He'll bite you. And I was like, yeah, that's endearing. And then I read the comments, and Saints fans are being pretty mean to him.
Katie Nolan
Why?
Carl Tart
I don't think. I just think we're hurt right now.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
This guy didn't look good in college.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, he did.
Carl Tart
And he's old. He's 27. He's our age.
Katie Nolan
Right. Basically.
Carl Tart
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. So might as well sign Aaron Rodgers.
Carl Tart
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
Who do you think has the saddest quarterback room right now in the NFL?
Carl Tart
I would say we do.
Katie Nolan
Or is it the Browns? Because of how many people are in there.
Carl Tart
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
And the lack of understanding of who's where.
Carl Tart
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
And I don't know if you saw, but there was a clip from wherever they are right now in the. In their preseason of Dylan Gabriel did a press conference, and then a reporter. There's a clip of a reporter that stepped in after him and kept mouthing to someone off camera, I'm taller than him.
Carl Tart
How would he do that? I don't know.
Katie Nolan
It was so weird. The vibes were so weird. He just kept being like, I'm taller than him. Like, all right.
Carl Tart
People are taller than people.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. People are small sometimes, so who cares? Maybe you're tall.
Carl Tart
I think Shador is good. I think Joe Flacco's a great vet.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. A good. A good presence. Maybe not necessarily on the field, but on the. In the locker room.
Carl Tart
And not terrible on the field.
Katie Nolan
Right.
Carl Tart
He came in and.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. Yeah.
Carl Tart
Had some moments for Cleveland last year.
Katie Nolan
Right. Elite. Maybe not, but good.
Carl Tart
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
Still got it.
Carl Tart
It's hard to believe that how long he's been in the league.
Katie Nolan
It's a lot. Let's not say. Let's not say the number. I'd like to keep my spirits high.
Carl Tart
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
We were trying to throw around an idea for, you know, they said capture the flag. Hashtag, Capture the flag was for Cooper flag. And then there was, I guess, a suck for Saquon. I don't remember that. That sounds.
Carl Tart
Suck for sake.
Katie Nolan
Sounds different, but it's like a. A good little nickname for Tanking for a project. Number one pick. Would there. Do we have a good one for Arch Manning March for Arch. Okay.
Carl Tart
When the Saints go marching in the wrong direction this season.
Katie Nolan
That's greatness.
Carl Tart
Saints go marching in the wrong direction.
Katie Nolan
That's good.
Carl Tart
We. We marching around.
Katie Nolan
March backwards.
Carl Tart
March backwards. For Arch.
Katie Nolan
For Arch.
Carl Tart
For Arch.
Katie Nolan
I mean, it kind of is perfect. The Saints, the marching, the arching. It does feel writ.
Carl Tart
Or I guess, suck for Saquon. You could say Arch for Arch.
Katie Nolan
I mean, that's different. That's different. I don't think suck for Saquon meant a blowjob, but throw it back for arch is. I'm sure we could. I'm sure we could do something with it. The pope was. The Pope. The Pope. When we talked last. Not yet.
Carl Tart
Not yet.
Katie Nolan
No. New pope.
Carl Tart
New pope. Chicago Pope.
Katie Nolan
Blessed new pope to you. That's what you say to somebody after a new pope.
Carl Tart
Blessed new Pope to you.
Katie Nolan
Thank you so much. Video has surfaced of the. Of the American Pope and White Sox fan Robert Francis Prevost. Now Pope Leo The XIV is 14.
Carl Tart
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. In the crowd of the 2005 World Series game itself. South Southwest side ballpark. Now Known as rate. Field. Right field is so funny. It was guaranteed rate, and then they got rid of guaranteed, which is like. You can't even. So it's just a rate. Variable rate. I don't.
Carl Tart
It's not guaranteed.
Katie Nolan
Just rate.
Carl Tart
We're gonna get you a.
Katie Nolan
Rate it. Upon being named Pope on Thursday, brief debate about whether he was Cubs or White Sox. But that was settled by his brother, who's been doing a lot of interviews. Yeah, the Pope's brother has been out here talking about the Pope, which I guess I would too, like. My brother's the. What's new with you? Oh, my brother's the Pope now. Pope of the world. My brother became Pope of the world. But they put out a trading card, tops. Now put out a Pope card on Thursday and it has set an all time record for non sports card within that brand with 133,535 copies sold as of Monday afternoon.
Carl Tart
Wow. Seems like not a lot.
Katie Nolan
They're printed in order to commemorate milestone events and then sold individually for a limited time. The card for the Chicago born Pope went on sale Thursday for $9 for one card and a discount for bulk orders. Yeah, 133,000. I feel like we could probably do. We could run that up.
Carl Tart
Yeah, let's get. Let's get those cards out in the Vatican.
Katie Nolan
That's the most ever non pope. I mean, non player ever sold.
Carl Tart
I'm sorry.
Katie Nolan
We should look up everybody who has a card.
Carl Tart
Can I ask a dumb question?
Katie Nolan
Yeah, it's probably not dumb.
Carl Tart
Where is the Vatican? Is it in Italy?
Katie Nolan
It's. Well, the Vatican is its own country, but it's in Italy. It's like perfectly encapsulated within Italy.
Carl Tart
Okay. Okay.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. Vatican City is a country.
Carl Tart
Gotcha.
Katie Nolan
Confusing because it says city.
Carl Tart
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
But it is a country on its own.
Carl Tart
Get me to Vatican's country. I. I think it's cool that we got an American Pope and he's from Chicago. And I think he's cool that he's a White Sox fan and not a Cubs fan.
Katie Nolan
Right. Because, I mean, what shows belief in God more than still rooting for a team after that season last year?
Carl Tart
Second team. Second team. I'm all about the second team, guys.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. Good. Cubs are gonna be cursed now. I feel like if the Pope is a White Sox fan. Let's go curse the Cubs.
Carl Tart
Dance. Me ain't hitting no more home runs. Tell your brother.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, I will, I will. Please don't lose money based off of something I said. Speaking of baseball, I don't know how much you're following. But the Colorado. Colorado Rockies fired their manager.
Carl Tart
I saw that. And it ain't his fault.
Katie Nolan
No, but that really, in baseball, that's always the way where they're like, we just lost by 21 runs to the Padres at home.
Carl Tart
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
Somebody has to. You. We got to fire our manager.
Carl Tart
Have you been to every stadium?
Katie Nolan
No, I've been to a lot, but I haven't been to. Let me think of the ones I haven't been to. Camden Yards.
Carl Tart
I haven't either. I'm going this summer.
Katie Nolan
I want to go. That's, like, on my list of ones I want to go to. I've been to many that I didn't care to go to before. I didn't go there. And I haven't been to, like, Kansas City.
Carl Tart
Yeah, I want to go there, too. Shout out to Heidi Gardner and Paul Rudd.
Katie Nolan
That's right.
Carl Tart
And Rob Riggle. They do this thing called the Big Sick.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
In Kansas City, and it's happening in two weeks. And I was gonna go, but my buddy's getting married on the 1st.
Katie Nolan
No.
Carl Tart
Andrew Dismukes.
Katie Nolan
Shout out.
Carl Tart
Shout out. Andrew Dismukes from snl.
Katie Nolan
Congratulations, Andrew.
Carl Tart
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
Way to ruin it.
Carl Tart
Way to ruin the Big Sick.
Katie Nolan
Way to ruin the Big Sick.
Carl Tart
Because I think a lot of us will be. Will not be in attendance now.
Katie Nolan
Oh, no. Is Heidi pissed? Heidi's never been pissed in her life.
Carl Tart
No, no, she's great. She's just awesome.
Katie Nolan
Sweet little angel.
Carl Tart
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
I was thinking of her yesterday because I saw somebody on Tick Tock, a fan on Tick Tock named Darmi was her name. Who before she came on our podcast and she talked about when the Chiefs are playing, she'll write little affirmations to them in her phone. It was like the sweetest fandom I've ever seen. And I can't stand Chiefs fans, but she's so sweet. This girl on TikTok was doing a voodoo doll with Jalen Brunson, but reverse voodoo and icing his ankles before the game. And I was like, this is so sweet. It's such Heidi Gartner esque fandom.
Carl Tart
Yeah. Heidi is she so me and her talk a lot about sports, and she's fun to talk to about sports. And then she also makes it suck when you talking shit.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
Because she's so nice.
Katie Nolan
Yes. We were like, come on, can't you just be mean to me for a second?
Carl Tart
I actually don't have any Chiefs fans in my life that I don't like.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
I don't feel like they've turned yet.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
And that's what I always say. Like, my buddy Ryan Meharry, who I host a football show with, is a Chiefs fan, and he's great. Heidi Gardner's great. My buddy Evan is great. My buddy Kyle McGrath is great. Evan Cleaver. I didn't say his. I got to say their whole name.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, yeah. You have to.
Carl Tart
All these guys are. Are great, and I'm happy for them.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
And they're legit Kansas City people.
Katie Nolan
Right.
Carl Tart
They're not bandwagon.
Katie Nolan
Right. They're not faking it.
Carl Tart
They're not faking it. So, you know, their Joes are Arthur Bryant's. Are you Joe's or Arthur? Oh, you ain't been there? You said you ain't been there.
Katie Nolan
Mm. Mm.
Carl Tart
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
What was.
Carl Tart
What did you say, Joe's or Arthur Bryant's? Barbecue. Ah, barbecue.
Katie Nolan
Mm. Kansas City barbecue is tasty.
Carl Tart
You from Boston? Can I talk to you about Kelly's roast beef?
Katie Nolan
Sure.
Carl Tart
Do you like it?
Katie Nolan
Well, okay, so. Yes, but I'm not. Just because I. It's like an institution. I'm not. You're really not gonna. I've never been to an Arby's. You're not gonna find me at, like, a roast beef establishment most of the time, so. Would say, like. Yes, but I'm not prepared to defend it if you're going to yell at me.
Carl Tart
No, no, no. I'm not going to do. I'm not going to yell at you. I went with my buddies, my buddy Mike Mitchell, and we. We. He host a show called Doughboys.
Katie Nolan
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Carl Tart
And with our other friend Nick, and we went there and we reviewed it, and I was so excited for it because I'm from Mississippi, Gulf coast, and so there's nothing I like more than fried seafood food. It's my favorite food. Give me a basket of fried shrimp. Bury me in a basket of fried shrimp. And I got the fried clam strips.
Katie Nolan
Which are the best.
Carl Tart
No seasoning on them.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. So they're fried.
Carl Tart
They are fried, breaded. They are that. And. And.
Katie Nolan
And that.
Carl Tart
I wanted them to be so good.
Katie Nolan
You want them to be spicy. We can't handle that. We don't really.
Carl Tart
I don't even need to be spicy. You've been in New Orleans. You've had, like, a fried shrimp.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. It's nice.
Carl Tart
Just give me a little bit of.
Katie Nolan
Just a something.
Carl Tart
Just a little something.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. That's not what we do up there.
Carl Tart
I learned that, you know, I learned that the.
Katie Nolan
It's more like. Yeah, no, we don't really do that.
Carl Tart
I learned it, the roast beef sandwich. Real good, though.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. Tasty.
Carl Tart
I enjoyed that.
Katie Nolan
It's tasty. There's one more episode of snl.
Carl Tart
There's one more episode of Saturday Night Live. Check it this weekend.
Katie Nolan
And that's on 11:30 Saturday.
Carl Tart
That's on Saturday.
Katie Nolan
Okay.
Carl Tart
That show comes on on Saturday.
Katie Nolan
Okay.
Carl Tart
Somebody, I can't remember who, they said somebody was asked to host and they were like, yeah, sure I do. Is there any way we can move it to Sunday?
Katie Nolan
Who?
Carl Tart
I wish I had the name.
Katie Nolan
Crazy.
Carl Tart
Crazy, crazy thing to say.
Katie Nolan
Because if it's, you know, if that's. And these are just names, but if that's like a Sydney Sweeney, it's very different than if that's asked by like, I don't know, the Pope or something. Like, it's, it's an interesting ask. It says a lot about the person, I think.
Carl Tart
Yeah. It was some act.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
But.
Katie Nolan
Huh.
Carl Tart
He didn't host one more episode of that.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
And I'm excited for it.
Katie Nolan
And then where all the pod. You have a million podcasts.
Carl Tart
Got a million podcasts. So let's talk about them.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
Where the Hollywood Handbook.
Katie Nolan
Wow.
Carl Tart
Hollywood Handbook universe.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
Myself, my buddy Hayes Davenport. My buddy Sean Clements. We have a patreon. Patreon.com Hollywood Handbook where you can find the original podcast, Hollywood Handbook. You can find their pro version on there. You can find the basketball podcast that you so graciously joined us. Thank you so much for that. The flagrant ones. We have a baseball podcast called the Filthy One.
Katie Nolan
Shout out.
Carl Tart
Speaking of being caught talking on Mike, I did a Harold Reynolds impression and he heard it and he came on the show. Really awesome.
Katie Nolan
Okay, good.
Carl Tart
So we had a really great week of guests because we had Harold Reynolds and then we had you and sick week. Sick week of stuff. And you can, you can still hear those episodes. We also have a football podcast we do called Foosballs that I host with my buddies Greg Gallant and Ryan Meharry. And this summer, my friend Lamar and I are bringing back our. We had a Gossip Girl watch podcast called XOXO Gossip Kings where I watched it for the first time and he watched it it for the second time. He watched it over the pandemic. I watched it for the first time and we talked about it every week.
Katie Nolan
Thumbs up, thumbs down. Just in general on Gossip Girl.
Carl Tart
Thumbs down, thumbs down. Yeah. Yeah, Good. Again, like we're watching this from the perspective of two mid-30s. From your perspective. Yeah. Yeah.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
And so it wasn't for us.
Katie Nolan
Right.
Carl Tart
So people go, who's your favorite character? Are you Serena or Blair? I like Rufus. Rufus is my guy. Guy. I hate these kids.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. All of these rich kids.
Carl Tart
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
And we're gonna do a new. A new show. We're gonna do Sopranos because I've never watched the Sopranos, and so I wasn't allowed to when I was a kid, and I didn't really want to after that, but now I do.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Carl Tart
And I feel like I understand it more, and I think it'll be good. So. And now that show is going to be called XOXO by the Bangs. And so you. You'll be able to find that this summer when I return to God's country, Los Angeles, California, and I record that show with my good buddy Lamar Woods.
Katie Nolan
Exciting. I'm excited for you to watch Sopranos.
Carl Tart
I'm excited to watch it.
Katie Nolan
It's really good. I rewatched it during the Pandemic because I don't remember things when I watch them, so people are like, oh, what's your favorite episode? I don't know. I watched it 10 years ago. I don't remember. So I've rewatched it. Still just as good. So nice. Excited for you.
Carl Tart
Thank you.
Katie Nolan
Thank you for being here.
Carl Tart
Thank you for having me. This was great.
Katie Nolan
Yes, it's fun. Sorry the studio's so hot.
Carl Tart
It's a little warm.
Katie Nolan
I'm sorry. It's not my fault. All right, you guys, it's Tuesday, so that means we have to tell you, if you wanted to watch some sports this week, what you could watch. And we let Chris do that because, well, he's very talented and smart, but also that. That. That great Australian accent that we love so much. So hit us with it, Chris. What's first?
Unnamed Sports Commentator
The first thing is hockey, right? We are still in the NHL post season. We're still in the NBA post season, but we don't want to talk too much about that one. So let's stick with the NHL. It has been an awesome postseason to watch. Right. One of the best series so far has been the Panthers Maple Leafs. We're heading into game five. That'll be tomorrow night at 7pm Eastern. The series is tied at two a piece at the moment. So it's. It's anyone's ball game at the moment.
Katie Nolan
There's no ball in hockey, Chris.
Unnamed Sports Commentator
It's anyone's puck game.
Katie Nolan
Thank you.
Unnamed Sports Commentator
At the moment.
Katie Nolan
Thank you. They say that.
Unnamed Sports Commentator
I don't know.
Katie Nolan
No, I don't Think so. They do now.
Unnamed Sports Commentator
They do now. Hopefully we can see another sighting of our Scottish Queen because we love the content that she brings to the world.
Katie Nolan
You mean you love her massive feckin tats.
Unnamed Sports Commentator
Massive personality.
Katie Nolan
Her massive feckin tats. It's fun.
Unnamed Sports Commentator
So watch that game tomorrow, 7pm Eastern.
Katie Nolan
It's fun watching. You guys have to be like, we love her and well those. But it's. You say that, not me. You say it, but we love her personality. You say the other stuff. Yeah, I guess you could watch that. I guess that. You could watch that. I guess you might have been watching it the other day when Brad Martian had an overtime winning goal and I just got to watch the Panthers hug and celebrate him. I got to watch them all gather together and hug him and be like, yay, he's ours. It was. It ruled. I loved it. What else?
Unnamed Sports Commentator
Second thing, the resumption of the Indian Premier League season is on May 17. This is between the Royal Challengers and the Kolkata Knight Riders. This is cricket. We spoke about cricket a few weeks ago with Vibhav soria Vanchi, the 14 year old who hit a century off 34 balls. I think it was. The IPL season actually came to a halt last week after rising tensions between India and Pakistan. So there was like a lot of danger around the league. They had to suspend it for a week. But there's been an announcement of a ceasefire, thankfully. So they're going to bring back the tournament on the 17th with that game between the Royal Challengers and the Calcutta Knight Riders. It might be tough for some of the international players to go back and play for the the pointy end of the IPL season cricket. Australia's already came out and said that they're going to throw their support behind players who choose not to go back and play in India because of the concerns about their health. Because I think a lot of players, not just Australians but everyone playing in this tournament were rightfully shaken when they had to abandon play due to the this impending tensions that were rising between these two nations. So it's going to be a fascinating end of the season. Don't know the sort of star power that's going to return to it, but fascinating to watch nonetheless.
Chris
Yeah, I just googled they are legit named after Knight Rider. Like legit named after the hot.
Katie Nolan
The television show.
Chris
Yeah. Hasselhoff and Mr. Feeney and Knight Rider and they. This is the Calcutta Knight Riders. This is amazing, huh?
Katie Nolan
Also. But I assume Mother Teresa was a big fan.
Chris
Had been right. Die hard.
Katie Nolan
Now Wait, of.
Chris
Of Hasselhoff and Night Rider or of the actual Kolkata?
Katie Nolan
No, Hasselhoff, of course. Of course. Who wasn't? Everybody knows that about Mother Teresa now.
Chris
My car actually talks to me and I don't know.
Katie Nolan
And I'd rather it shut up. Yeah. Honestly, if it could zip its lip would be great.
Unnamed Sports Commentator
Also, one of the players for Royal Challenges, Verat Kohli, who's one of the best Indian cricketers of all time, has announced his retirement from Test cricket.
Katie Nolan
Oh, his. That big long career of 17 years.
Unnamed Sports Commentator
14.
Katie Nolan
14 years is. And all those points.
Unnamed Sports Commentator
Runs.
Katie Nolan
Runs. He scored just top of the table.
Chris
The googlies were so wicked.
Katie Nolan
All the pucks.
Unnamed Sports Commentator
You say googly.
Chris
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
Why'd he do that?
Unnamed Sports Commentator
Yeah, I'm impressed. I'm impressed.
Katie Nolan
Gooleyed it. Don't give him credit. Cricket words. He asked. Chatgpt. Chat. Goog. Pt.
Chris
Oh, no. I'm on the Wikipedia entry for Knight Rider episodes right now.
Katie Nolan
I'm not a cricket. Yes, exactly.
Chris
Or 90 of them.
Katie Nolan
Okay. What else? Chris, you got? We got to give me one more legally.
Unnamed Sports Commentator
Third thing to. Oh, by the way, you can watch the IPL game on Willow tv. Formula One is the third thing to watch out for. We've got the Emilia Romana grand prix this Sunday, May 18th at 9am Eastern on ESPN. Oscar Piastri currently leads the driver's standings on 131 points, ahead of teammate Lando Norris on 115 points. Oscar's the only driver so far this season to win multiple races. He's notched up four wins from six races. The only other two races going Orlando Norris and Max Verstappen. That's going to be a fun one to watch. And we also had the release of the final F1, the movie trailer that came out. Brad Pitt's new F1 movie that people seem to be pretty excited about. So go and check that out if you haven't seen that so far. But yeah. Sunday, May 18, 9am Eastern on ESPN. The Emilia Romana Grand Prix.
Chris
So for the movie, Brad Pitt is an F1 driver in this?
Carl Tart
Yes.
Unnamed Sports Commentator
Correct. And they actually have a grid made up of, I think Max Verstappa. So Max Verstappen on the grid. Sergio Perez was in on the grid as well. So it's made up of a combination of real drivers and fake drivers.
Chris
Brad Pitt is 61. How do we. How do we justify this?
Unnamed Sports Commentator
That's the whole thing. He's like an older driver coming back to help mentor the young up and coming hotshot driver on his team.
Chris
Like that's like, that's like really old for a race car. Like Wilford Brimley at 61. We were like, you shouldn't drive.
Carl Tart
Yes.
Chris
It feels like a, a bit too far.
Unnamed Sports Commentator
And I don't know how much they're going to lean into that. I assume that's a relatively big part of the premise, like, should he be coming back? Sort of thing. But it's, it looks fascinating, the movie. It's directed and written by the guys who did Top Gun Maverick and I trust them because that movie was fantastic. So, yeah, keep your eye out for that one. It comes out in June.
Katie Nolan
We've been saying that movie's about to come out for a really long time. I feel like just get it out, you know?
Unnamed Sports Commentator
Yep.
Katie Nolan
Anyway, also, you guys, you can watch the p. Did not to give you my own. Not to give you a note, Chris, but pwhl Semifinals tonight, 7pm Montreal at Ottawa. Game 3, Game 2. They went to quadruple overtime. So things are heating up. It's the pointy end of so many seasons at once. Once it's like I was watching, I watched so much sports this weekend. I watched, I watched some lacrosse because they're at the end of their. They're in their postseason. I watched the 2024 Papa Shot national championships.
Unnamed Sports Commentator
You didn't get that. That result ruined for you. You. You were able to get.
Katie Nolan
No, no. Yeah, I managed spoiler free. So pretty amazing. So, yeah, really scroll through your TV guys. Maybe you'll find something crazy to watch. Okay. It. Casuals with Katie Nolan: Episode Summary
Episode Title: Derek Carr, the NBA Playoffs, and Golden Corral with Giannis | with Carl Tart
Release Date: May 13, 2025
Host: Katie Nolan
Guest: Carl Tart
The episode kicks off with Katie Nolan addressing the ongoing debate surrounding Raphael Devers of the Boston Red Sox. Devers, initially signed as a starting third baseman, faced backlash when the team requested him to transition to a Designated Hitter (DH) role, leading to fan unrest.
Katie Nolan (02:15):
"Raphael Devers named American League Player of the Week this week... his batting average was .476."
Carl Tart (05:30):
"In sports, we say the team is more important than the individual, and Devers is exemplifying that by performing exceptionally well as a DH."
Katie emphasizes the team's reliance on Devers and questions the long-term implications of forcing players into unfamiliar positions, highlighting the delicate balance between individual preferences and team dynamics.
Katie warmly welcomes Carl Tart, a comedian, actor, and writer affiliated with SNL and Upright Citizens Brigade, who brings his unique perspective to the discussion.
Katie Nolan (10:15):
"We're joined today by Carl Tart, a comedian and actor, known for his work on SNL and Upright Citizens Brigade."
Carl Tart (10:17):
"Thanks for having me, Katie. Excited to dive into some sports talk!"
The conversation delves into the NBA playoffs, focusing on Carl's perspectives as a Clippers fan and his critical views on Luka Doncic's potential move to the Lakers. They discuss the recent NBA draft lottery, highlighting the Dallas Mavericks securing the first overall pick with a mere 1.8% probability.
Carl Tart (14:00):
"The Mavericks getting the first pick... it shouldn't have happened. I'm critical of Luka Doncic, and now he's potentially moving to the Lakers?"
Katie Nolan (17:28):
"The Mavericks have the first pick again, one of the longest shots to win the draft lottery. It's to discourage tanking, but it feels precarious."
Carl speculates on a conspiracy involving the lottery and predicts Shaed Gilgis Alexander winning the MVP award, suggesting the league might favor certain players for narrative purposes.
Carl Tart (23:25):
"I think Shaed Alexander will win MVP as a compromise to Jokic, who's been statistically better this season."
Giannis Antetokounmpo's situation is a hot topic, with Carl proposing a humorous pitch to transfer Giannis to the Clippers, highlighting numerous Golden Corral locations in LA as an incentive.
Carl Tart (39:04):
"Giannis, the LA Clippers – they have a Golden Corral in Victorville. Let's hop into my Jeep and make it happen!"
Katie Nolan (41:22):
"Giannis is exploring his future, but Carl's pitch is certainly... unique!"
The duo discusses Giannis' impact and potential moves, blending humor with genuine sports analysis.
Shifting to the NFL, Katie announces Derek Carr's retirement after an 11-season career with the New Orleans Saints, citing a shoulder injury that led to his decision.
Katie Nolan (44:54):
"New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr has announced his retirement following a labral tear and degenerative rotator cuff issues."
Carl Tart (47:31):
"He’s made $195.7 million in his career. I’m glad we can take him off the books, minus the $10 million cap hit."
They discuss the Saints' future prospects, including potential quarterbacks like Tyler Schuck and Arch Manning, and express skepticism about the team's direction.
Carl Tart (46:12):
"With Arch Manning entering the draft, I think we might win too many games next year but still miss the playoffs."
