Hello! It's the podcast that's ready to tell you WAY too much about the legacy of Gary Lineker. Today, Katie and the Casualties discuss a boring MLB All-Star Game, a thrilling Home Run Derby, Jordan Walker's adorable grandmother, Sal Stewart's grunts in the box, Mrs. Met's formal wear, A-Rod making up three different stories about Justin Verlander in thirty seconds, and a full prep session of historical anecdotes for your World Cup Final watch party on Sunday - from the Hand of God to the Shorts of Brown, and a story of the dog that saved the 1966 World Cup. Then, Comedian Maddy Kelly joins the show [45:33] to talk about her career as the Bad Boy of the British Columbia U12 girls tennis circuit, her soccer career as a throw-in specialist, gymnastics, splits, and making tennis friends, watching the World Cup and what could be done better, loving baseball and embracing her Dodger fandom, the conflict of a Canadian-born fan rooting for the Dodgers in the 2025 World Series, whether Tat...

Brady
I'm ready.
Katie Nolan
Celsius Live fit. Go grab a cold, refreshing Celsius at your local retailer or locate now@celsius.com. hey, Isabella, did you happen to see your mascot, Mr. Met, and his. And his wife.
Chris
Baby girl.
Katie Nolan
His wife. The gift that keeps on giving was. They walked the red carpet. Mr. And Mrs. Met on the. What is that Brady? Is that before the All Star Game?
Brady
Yeah, before the All Star Game. They do the.
Chris
I did. I did see it.
Katie Nolan
You saw them. So you saw the outfits? I'm curious to know what you think of the fashion.
Chris
Um, well, first, I've never seen underneath Mrs. Met's clothes.
Katie Nolan
Damn, dude. They got websites for that.
Chris
So at first I was like, is she intentionally. Is Mrs. Matt. This is where I learned that she's blue underneath, or is she intentionally wearing, like, a long sleeve underneath the dress?
Maddy Kelly
Mm.
Chris
Don't love the orange. Even though I know that's part of the colors. But I just, I didn't. But I support my mascots. I support them. I want them to have a good time.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. Like, is that a long sleeve? Are they blue? I guess. I guess they're blue.
Chris
Cause her legs are blue. I see a slit in that dress.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, and that looks very. That dress is giving Jessica Rabbit. It's very, like, it's orange, sparkly, long, floor length. Now, I, I. Here's my question. What he. They're dressed for two different occasions. He's got a graphic tee on. This is. She's dressed like they're going to the Oscars. He's dressed like he's, you know, not. So what? And his shirt said, I love Mrs. Met, which is like, bro, get in line.
Chris
I know. It's kind of like, try hard. I don't.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, it's very obvious. Yeah. It's giving wife Guy. It's making me think, is Mr. Matt cheating?
Chris
Stop.
Katie Nolan
I would. I would knock his head with.
Chris
Mom Donnie.
Chris (Master Editor)
Whoa.
Chris
Remember how that was a whole thing?
Katie Nolan
Yes, but this is a scandal. I don't think we're ready to weather. I don't know that we'll come out the other side of this better or stronger. And so let's just pray.
Chris
And.
Katie Nolan
And honestly, if Mom Donnie was going to. It would. I think he could get. I think Mrs. Met would be interested. I could see that being something that came between the two of them anyway, so. Yeah, I just didn't. I like that they tried it, but I don't. You guys can just wear what you always wear. I don't need you guys to get this.
Chris
Yeah, it's really disorienting to see them in different clothes. Like, I want them to be in their jersey.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. Don't make me think about your body. I don't. Yeah, that's the thing.
Chris
That's what came out of this is
Katie Nolan
like, I'm thinking about your body now. Now I'm going. They have. They got holes down there. I just am going like, what?
Brady
How?
Katie Nolan
What are we. So anyway, you guys look great.
Chris
Yay, All Stars.

Maddy Kelly
Hello.
Katie Nolan
Hi. Welcome to Casuals, the sports podcast. It doesn't care what you know. We're just happy that you're here. You can love sports. We love sports, and we want to talk to you about everything going on in them. I'm Katie Nolan, host hosting this thing. We got a great guest coming up in a little bit, but first we spend a little time with our casualties, the production crew here at Sirius xm. We got Isabella, our sports newbie.
Isabella
Hi.
Katie Nolan
Oh, my God.
Chris
I don't know why that came out.
Katie Nolan
It's fine. I love it. I wanna encourage things like that. They just scare me. We got buh, buh, buh, buh, buh, buh. Brady.
Brady
Hi. Now I'm scared.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. And see, just regular. And then our master editor, Chris.
Chris (Master Editor)
What's up?
Brady
Woo.
Katie Nolan
Big Chris.
Chris
Hey.
Chris (Master Editor)
Okay.
Katie Nolan
If you want to reach out to us, please do. It's casualswithkatienolanmail.com if you'd like to leave a voicemail. That's awes. We like hearing your voices. Makes us feel like we're talking to you. So 646-801-0043 on IG and TikTok, we are Casualsthepodcast. And really, that's just where you go to tell me that it's football, not soccer. That is at this point, I give up. That's what social media is gonna be for me for the rest of the. At least this World cup is. Every day I go, I wonder if anybody connected with any of this stuff I said this week. And it's just 18 different people telling me it's football, not soccer. So you know what? It's exactly what I need to get me off of social media. Maybe it's.
Brady
You were there for genuine human interaction. Yes.
Katie Nolan
Believe it or not, I wanted to know if I was getting through to people. The answer is no, bitch. Call it football. And I can't read that. I feel like I'm losing my mind. I keep typing responses and going, don't do that.
Maddy Kelly
Don't do that.
Katie Nolan
I keep going, like. And did it mean a lot to you 14 days later to write this, the 900th person on the. And then I go, katie, that's really not gonna be worth it. You're getting a call from your agent. So anyway, see, at least in Australia,
Chris (Master Editor)
when we got told to call it football, we would say, well, our national team is the Socceroos. So if our national team is called the Socceroos, then we can call it soccer.
Katie Nolan
And I keep hearing and not looking any further into that. Soccer originated in England. The word soccer came from England. And so the fact that for association
Chris (Master Editor)
football is short for association.
Katie Nolan
Right. And the way that they're the loudest about telling us to stop, it makes me go, thou doth protest too much. So maybe leave me alone, please. We have a fantastic guest coming up, Maddy Kelly, someone who I've just algorithmically bumped into a lot. She's very funn. Uh, you may have seen her on the Tonight Show. She just did that recently. 2023. She was a new face. She got new faces at Just for Laughs, which is a big comedy festival in Canada. She's from Canada, but rooted for the Dodgers in the World Series, which I. I know Canada is a big place. I know it's not all Toronto, but Toronto is the only Canadian team we have. The Montreal Expos are gone. There were others. Or that's.
Brady
That was it.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. And so now it's just down to that one. And so that World Series was really Canada v. America, in a way. We had a lot of. She rooted for the Dodgers, so you better believe we talk about that and a bunch of other stuff that's coming up in a little bit. But first, we have a couple things I want to talk about. Number one, we. Since we last saw you, the completion of MLB, All Star festivities. We obviously saw Mr. And Mrs. Met on the red carpet, and I had to get Isabella's thoughts on that. But also, we had, of course, as it would be because we are cursed. We had an incredible Home Run Derby that we couldn't talk about. And then the All Star Game that we can talk about. Kind of a snooze fest. Can I say that? Did you like it, Brady?
Brady
The pitchers, it's. If you love strikeouts, there were 27 of them.
Katie Nolan
And I do love strikeouts, but not in my All Star Game. I want.
Brady
It's not why I showed up.
Katie Nolan
I want the bat swinging. I want the ball moving. I want to see Ernie Clement, which I did see, make an incredible play up the middle. I like watching baseball.
Brady
Ernie Clement making a credible play up the middle on Andy Pahes.
Katie Nolan
I know.
Brady
To throw out Andy Pahes.
Katie Nolan
I know. Isn't that crazy?
Brady
Flipping Game seven of the World Series?
Katie Nolan
Exactly. And so that part, I guess, I did like. But can we start, please, by talking about the Home Run Derby? I know it's kind of old by now, but Jordan Walker from the Cardinals. What an electric night that was. The Home Run Derby changed its format again. They do this a lot. Every couple years. We go back and forth. And the issue I think most people had with the timer in the old Home Run Derby was not that too many home runs were being hit. It was that the camera could not find the home runs. And so for the viewer, you'd be looking to see if one of the balls was out or not, and the batter would already be swinging on the next pitch. And so you kind of felt like you were behind the action. It was just a broadcast issue. Instead of solving that, they said, let's go back to. You get swings, we'll give you pitches, and you get a certain number of swings. 20 swings in that is it. 20 swings all rounds.
Brady
They did 20 and then 15.
Katie Nolan
15, right. And so it was like, you get to swing, and if you hit the ball and it doesn't go out, that costs a swing. If you hit the ball and it does go out, that costs a swing. Unless it's the last pitch, in which case you cannot. You can just hit a home run till you stop on that last pitch. So the first few rounds, I was like, it took a second. It sort of started with a lot of home runs. And then as the rounds went on, I thought they set it up in a way that sucked. Where Bryce Harper came up last after Kyle Schwaber and those guys both play for the Phillies. And this was in Philadelphia. And so they, like, made it so that only one of it worked out, so that by the time Bryce Harper was going, he was either going to knock Kyle Schwaber out of contention or he was going to get knocked out himself. And so it was like, that was a little bit of an annoyance. But then we got to the last round, and I had no notes. I was like, this is exactly what I wanted and exactly what I deserved. It comes down to Kyle Schwarber, hometown hero, who hits first and hits 11 home runs. And then Jordan Walker, a guy who makes $799,000 a year, which is, of course, a lot of money to a regular person. But in. In the scheme of baseball, that's not a lot of money. And the prize money for winning the Home Run Derby is more than that. It's a million dollars. So it was like a real guy who everyone is rooting for in the house versus guy who, like, we saw his parents. God, his parents were like, my favorite part of this broadcast. We saw his parents and his family rooting for him. But the entire place, they booed. Everybody shout out to Philly Phillies fans, know I love him and I understand them. I also know they get a bad rap and that people feel however they feel. They're very passionate. And they booed every single person that wasn't on the Phillies during that Home Run Derby. So it comes down to these two. Walker gets down to. He's got Brady. Where does it. Where did it get to when he had to just hit them in a row?
Brady
He was with three swings to go. He was. It was 11 to 6.
Katie Nolan
So he still needed five to tie, six to win. And he only had three swings left. And then he hit six home runs in a row.
Chris
No biggie.
Katie Nolan
Six home runs. Back to back to back to watch. I mean, Kyle Schwaber, for one. At first he was going like, keep going, dude. And then at one point, you saw him go like, gulp. Okay, you can stop at any moment. And the fans were like, there's no way. There's just no way. The entire crowd, you guys, is booing him loudly, violently. And he cool, calm and collected. Jordan Walker, learn his name. Because what a fucking dude. Stood there and hit six consecutive home runs and beat Kyle Schwerber in Kyle Schwaber's house.
Chris
Fun. I like it.
Katie Nolan
Unreal.
Chris
Give me 14 of them.
Katie Nolan
Fantastic. Give me 14 of them right away. It was awesome. I absolutely loved it. Electric Night saved the Home Run Derby. Unfortunately, it was. And I've said this on the Radio. I do eventually want to get back into tv, so I'm not going to say too much bad about Netflix, and it's not bad. These are just notes. Netflix had the Home Run Derby, and even though the format was fixed and we were not timing swings, so there was a lot of space between the pitches guys would swing at, theoretically, we still weren't going to the right camera angles at the right time. Is that fair to say?
Brady
They're learning. They're learning. It's their first year with baseball. Baseball's hard. I'll give them a little.
Katie Nolan
Sure.
Brady
A little credit because this is definitely an improvement.
Katie Nolan
Nobody gave me wiggle room, so I'll just say I'm giving it to you.
Brady
It was better than their opening day broadcast where cameras were all over the place and throws were all over and their audio levels were up and down. This was. This is better.
Chris
Don't you do, like, a practice run, though? Like, let's do a fake game as
Katie Nolan
much as you can. So when Apple TV got into baseball, they just took MLB Network people and people who knew how to do it and just paid them to do it. So it was like it was Apple doing it, but it was MLB Network. I assumed that sort of same thing would have happened at Netflix, but I guess not. So, yeah, we'll let them. They'll figure it out.
Chris
I won't let them figure it out.
Katie Nolan
That's right. That's right. She needs it now.
Brady
I did like their little set with Elle Duncan just kind of in a little lounge off to the side when they were. Weren't doing play by play. They're like, let's just throw to Elle. She's just sitting here on three couches interviewing Barry Bonds about whatever. Yeah, it's a nice little change of energy.
Katie Nolan
And I liked Barry Bonds asking his family, asking Jordan Walker's family afterwards what they were that they. He said to Jordan Walker, like, remember who sacrificed for you? Your parents sacrificed a lot for you. And then he, like, turned and he said, so, mom, dad, what are you gonna do with the money? What's the first thing you're gonna make him buy for you? And I was like, I love that. I think that's fantastic. It was. His family was electric. They were so proud of him, his little grandma. I was telling Isabella yesterday that his grandma, like, wandered into that shot where they were on all the couches, and she's just in the background of the shot, unaware as she shouldn't be. Let her live her life. But she's talking to someone off camera. And insisting, like, come here. And I bet the person off camera was going, no. And also you come here. You're in the live shot. I thought it was gorgeous. They were so. They were so proud of him. His parents were so proud of him. And it was just so sweet. And then the. The All Star Game. The All Star Game was like, all right, well, we did it. You know, it was a little bit anti climactic given how big of a night they had the night before. But the American League won. And so cool. I guess it doesn't mean anything anymore. Brady, I feel like you were the target audience for this sandlot thing that happened. I was paying. I'm sorry. To the All Star Game. I'm busy. I was paying half attention and I must have missed whatever the tee up for. And now it's time for the part where we do this. You know, the. And now it's time for stand up to cancer and they'll put on a little. They had boys to men do stand up to cancer. And everybody held up the signs. I must have missed the tee up for whatever this was. I look up and there's boys riding their bikes out onto the field. And then I see someone having a catch with Freddie Freeman in the middle of the All Star Game. What was this? And you liked it?
Brady
I don't know. And no, it was after the fourth inning when I'm not expecting an eight minute break in the action.
Katie Nolan
What was that?
Brady
With J.K. simmons throwing to a fireworks show over America the Beautiful. I get that it was owed to America, but it went really long.
Maddy Kelly
Long.
Brady
I walked out and cleaned up something in my garage and came back and it was still going. I was like. I was like, I guess I got time right now. Yeah, I guess we're not heartless.
Katie Nolan
I saw.
Brady
I saw people.
Chris
I saw people online go like, what's the sandlot? Whoa.
Katie Nolan
I'm fucking joking with you. I was gonna walk. I mean it. I was out. I can't. There's only.
Brady
You can't weaponize your youth like that.
Katie Nolan
Truly. I was gonna. I had to go. Thank God.
Chris
Just kidding.
Maddy Kelly
Thank you.
Brady
Simultaneously, we have a. We have a big ad campaign now. Have you seen, like, Patrick Rena is in all of the Hershey's s' mores commercials every break now for all the All Star festivities?
Katie Nolan
Sure. I don't think so, but I. But I believe you.
Brady
I know the back half of this is going to lead to me telling you something very disappointing. Ham Porter from the sandlot. Patrick Rena. I discovered after all of these commercials. Massive Scientologist.
Katie Nolan
Whoa.
Brady
I know, right?
Katie Nolan
They get the kids, don't they? They get the kids young. Well, that's a.
Chris (Master Editor)
Do you know what the sandlot's called in Australia?
Katie Nolan
The sandlot, I hope, shows some respect to us.
Brady
Why do you need a different word?
Maddy Kelly
Guernsey.
Katie Nolan
I'm sorry.
Chris (Master Editor)
So it's still weird to me when I just hear the sandlot. It's called the Sandlot Kids. So growing up, you'd be a fan of the Sandlot Kids.
Chris
Okay.
Maddy Kelly
Cute.
Chris (Master Editor)
And so hearing the sandlot just sounds bizarre. It's the same way that Mighty Ducks in Australia is called Champions.
Katie Nolan
That's not the same way. That sucks. That ruins what. They weren't Champions. If they called it Champions, it would give away that they pull it off.
Chris (Master Editor)
But then It's Mighty Ducks 2. It's not Champions 2 goes from Champions to Martin Ducks 2.
Brady
They're both in English. Why do you need to change the title question?
Chris (Master Editor)
I don't know.
Katie Nolan
They do this. Australia does this. Look, you're talking to a lady who went abroad, studied abroad and took a film in Australia class. Now, I don't remember even the name of one of them, but I do remember they have different names. You know, they change the names over there. I don't know why. What else happened that I thought was worth mentioning? I know there's something. Oh, the Sal. The Sal Stewart stuff. The. So there was a. So Kate Maniscalco, who eventually, I hope we will get as a guest on this podcast. She's been very busy. She does baseball for baddies. You may have seen her on social media. She rules. She. You. I saw a clip of her and Sal Stewart from the Reds saw her and, like, recognized her. Do we have this clip? Can we play Sal Stewart? This is him getting Kate's attention. It's very cute. Play this. Hi, Sal.
Brady
Are you MLB with the girl?
Katie Nolan
With the girl, yeah. Baseball for baddies. That's what it is. There we go. Girlfriend watches you.
Isabella
That's all.
Katie Nolan
Oh, that makes me so happy. Thank you so much. So he said, are you baseball with the girlies?
Chris (Master Editor)
MLB for the girlies.
Katie Nolan
MLB with the girlies. And she goes with the girl. Oh, yeah. Baseball for baddies. But it's so cute. He said, my girlfriend watches. My girlfriend listens. I love that. Adorable. But it's not my favorite Sal Stewart sound. Unfortunately, it is Top by. Sal Stewart wore a microphone for the. This was pre game, right?
Brady
Yeah. He was taking BP for a promotion with the meta glasses.
Katie Nolan
And we're gonna leave that part Out. You know, like we don't even.
Brady
Promotion with.
Katie Nolan
He was doing for promotion with. He was mic'd up for batting practice. And I'm sure there were other things we were supposed to take away from this, but here's what I got from it.
Isabella
Oh,
Maddy Kelly
get away, get away.
Katie Nolan
Come on, man.
Chris
Hold on, wait, let's run that back for two seconds.
Katie Nolan
And you know what? I bet it's like indicative of a good breathing technique because you hear the crack of the bat and then it's like a release. It's like a. Yeah, like tennis.
Chris
They do that, right?
Katie Nolan
We watch enough tennis to know that sometimes you gotta make a crazy noise. It really helps. But like edit that out like the drone noises at the Olympics. I don't know.
Brady
It sounds like a very strong endorphin
Katie Nolan
release for Sal Stewart. Loving that hit. Like. Oh, it's, it's. Let's back up, you know, I don't know. Like that.
Maddy Kelly
Okay.
Katie Nolan
God. Which was more uncomfortable? I guess I'll ask that noise or the Justin Verlander a Rod moment. So this, this was the interview on Fox before the Home Run Derby and a Rod interviewing Justin Verlander, a pitcher who. Isabella, if. Do you have any cultural context for Justin Verlander?
Chris
No.
Katie Nolan
He was great and. And still is very. He's still very good. Obviously. He married Kate Upton. Do you remember Kate Upton from Sports Illustrated? So, like, they were a pretty hot couple for a while. They're still married. They're still adorable. But I was trying to find, you know, cultural touch points where you may have bumped into Justin Verlander. He has now announced. Correct. Brady. This is the. His last season. He'll be retiring after this season. So a Rod, a, you know, controversial figure in baseball, but a, you know, guy who works on the Fox broadcast is talking to Justin Verlander, a 10 time All Star, and just doesn't seem like maybe he prepped for this. Let's roll the clip. Justin, first of all, I've been a
Chris (Master Editor)
huge fan of your career from day
Katie Nolan
one when you stepped into the old Yankee Stadium and blew balls right by me.
Brady
Good memories, you know, for you,
Chris
you
Katie Nolan
always have 3,000, so, you know, that's awesome. Of course, 10 against one. No, but I also look at you
Chris (Master Editor)
as like, I look at Tom Brady, Jeter, you know, Poppy Mariano as guys
Katie Nolan
that played into their 40s and doing
Isabella
at a high level.
Katie Nolan
But this for the young ones that are out there watching, how do you explain being a late draft pick, being designated for assignment a couple times, but
Chris (Master Editor)
do two different Teams, right?
Katie Nolan
Me.
Isabella
Yeah.
Chris (Master Editor)
No, that's.
Katie Nolan
Oh, did he say I'm kidding. I'm kidding?
Chris (Master Editor)
Yes, he did.
Katie Nolan
But he wasn't kidding. Why would you.
Chris (Master Editor)
No, he wasn't.
Katie Nolan
What a hilarious joke. Remember the time I thought you had been designated for assignment twice and that
Chris (Master Editor)
I also thought you were a late draft pick?
Brady
Me designated for assignment? Meaning you were just cut. Like the team is cutting you. Getting rid of you. Oh, yeah.
Katie Nolan
Important context. Thank you for doing that because I would have forgotten to do that. That's what that means, Isabella. That they just were like, we don't need him. He's off. Oh, and so that never happened. What was he drafted? When was he drafted?
Brady
Second.
Katie Nolan
Holy shit.
Chris (Master Editor)
And he also, he's had more home runs in his career against Justin Verlander than strikeout. So he never really struggled against.
Katie Nolan
He didn't have a hard time facing him.
Brady
No. A Rod owned Verlander.
Katie Nolan
Is a Rod awake?
Brady
Made up this story completely.
Katie Nolan
Is a Rod awake? Was somebody else booked in that spot and he just kept the same card? What is he talking about? What is he talking about?
Brady
But they're also like, he's making up personal stories. He's like, man used to blow balls right by me. Glad I don't have to face you anymore. I'm like, you crushed this guy, right?
Katie Nolan
And also, why would you opt into saying the phrase blow balls? I just like, oh, I thought you said blue balls. You used to blow balls past. Either way, it's like you could avoid the whole thing. Cause it's not true. You're just saying shit.
Chris (Master Editor)
90% of this 35 second clip is not.
Katie Nolan
We are spreading misinformation by airing a clip that ran during the broadcast. Fascinating. I don't. Was there anything else we didn't mention, Brady, that you feel deserved mention from the All Star festivities?
Brady
I mean the red carpet was a lot of Major league baseball media still not knowing how to not be weird around Levy Dunn. They'll figure that out eventually.
Katie Nolan
I mean, when? Please. I'm dying to know when. And look, she's a beautiful girl, but can everybody just be normal, please? It's so strange. It's so strange. Cuz she's like very young compared to you. And so just like. Everybody, shoulders back, eyes up. Let's get them moving.
Brady
And I found out that Cam Schlitler, Yankees phenom, is a self professed huge Star wars fan who claims his favorite movie is Revenge of the Sith.
Katie Nolan
I don't know enough to know why that's offensive. Is that. That's a bad one to have as your favorite.
Chris (Master Editor)
Traditionally one of the good ones.
Katie Nolan
What number is it?
Brady
It's number three, but it was.
Katie Nolan
Meaning it's the third of.
Brady
Is it like your favorite homologous one overall made? Okay, it's one of the newer ones, but not the newer, newer one.
Katie Nolan
It's not newest. Newest.
Brady
But that's me being complete old head and you know.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, no, I get it. I just don't care about Star Wars. But I did want to let you speak your truth. It's. If it means a lot to you. I am playing the Star wars video game. I know a lot about Cal Kestis, but I don't think he's even in the movies. Right. That's a guy anybody's familiar with. Which game is this the second? Single player?
Brady
Jedi, Jedi, Survivor.
Katie Nolan
So it's either Survivor or then there's another one, Fallen Kingdom. I played the first one first. It was wicked hard. And then I played. I'm now playing the second one, which is not as hard.
Brady
Last Star wars game, I think I was out after I opened up the one that was like the. The. The massive multiplayer game, but they pay walled. Darth fucking Vader.
Katie Nolan
I didn't mess with the. The multiplayer one.
Brady
They paywall Darth Vader in a Star wars game. I'm like, I'm out, guys. Thanks, ea.
Katie Nolan
I know. Okay, so that's your. That's the. That's the look. The All Star break happened. Okay. So then it's a little bit longer. We wait, and then it's back into baseball. Don't give up on the sport. That wasn't our best All Star Game showing, but I think the rest of this year is going to really pick up very quickly. Isabella's been to four or five games. You got to get on it. Go see a team. Just start caring a little. Also, mentally prepare yourself for the trade deadline, which is when. Brady. August.
Brady
It's. It's usually July 31st. I want to say it's August 3rd this year for no reason.
Katie Nolan
Move it around. Making things confusing.
Brady
I think it's because it's. It's something. It's something about like a weekend and they don't want to have it on like a Sunday.
Katie Nolan
Sure. So keep ahead on. Keep your head on Monday, August 3rd. That's when every team has its last chance to make trades. And so there's us. Sometimes those days pop off a big
Chris
trader too late into the season.
Katie Nolan
It's just there. It's basically just saying you couldn't do it any later than this because it would start to get like, you don't want somebody to go like, hey, we're not going to make it. So we'll just trade off all of our talented guys on one year deals and then get them back. It's to basically keep the thing competitive and keep it fair. But it's just the, the deadline. Sometimes a lot happens. Sometimes it kind of comes and goes. Sometimes trades happen before the deadline. Basically it's the last day to do it. So it's something to keep in mind.
Brady
You may be losing guys for a guy today. We had said, like, what are the Red Sox going to do? Are they going to sell? Are they going to buy? They traded what guy for somebody today.
Katie Nolan
Who's the somebody?
Brady
So it's Jamiah Jones for the Tigers. Not a huge deal, but it's going to. It indicates that they are less likely to trade guys away. They are more likely to be buyers. They're taking those tiny baby steps.
Katie Nolan
Also. Jamai, we have our.
Chris
Our.
Katie Nolan
Our what's not a sideline reporter. What's it called in baseball? Our clubhouse reporter, dugout reporter is named Jamiah Jemi Webster. So now that's. Now we got. Maybe they'll have a jemai off. Maybe they'll have a jemia sans. That's baseball. It is time now for your soccer spotlight, presented by Xfinity. This summer you'll need a good connection for your watch party. Xfinity has wi fi so reliable you can host the world. And now you can lock in a price for five years. Xfinity. Imagine that, Brady. We have reached the final. We are at the world cup final.
Brady
Woo. Yeah. After four weeks of action, we have one game left. We have the final Sunday in New Jersey. We've got Spain taking on Argentina, the 2010 champions against the 2022 champions. Spain beat France 2 nothing on Tuesday. They set a record. It's their sixth shutout in the world cup this year. And then Wednesday afternoon, Argentina knocking off England in Atlanta. So now we got the young blood against the old. We've got Lamina Mall going against Messi, the man who once bathed him in a bathtub. Now they're head to head in the world cup final. Argentina trying to become the back to back world cup champions since Brazil in 1962.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, it's going to be a very good game. We're very excited. And it also is the culmination of this summer of soccer. Look, we had the Knicks bring everybody together, get everybody out into the streets. And then I think we saw the same thing happen with the World Cup. I'm trying to keep this, like, sense of community going because I think people crave community. They're looking for reasons to get out of their house. And so if you are invited to a World cup watch party for the final, if you've got a friend who's having people over, if you are, if you want to be the person who's like, hey, everyone, come over. I want to arm casual fans with, like, interesting stuff to talk about with all of these people, places you can make connections. And one thing we haven't really had any time to talk about throughout this World cup is that, like, the World cup has some crazy history. Now we're going to focus on the Men's World cup in this segment in particular, because that is the final that we have coming up. And then also this saves us content for next year when we want to do this same segment with the Women's World cup, but focusing on the Men's World Cup. Throughout the history of the Men's World cup, some crazy stuff has happened. And I thought maybe it would be a good idea to tell some of these crazy stories to people who may not know them. That way, when you're, you know, at a watch party and there's a little downtime, maybe they're going to var. Maybe it's a hydration break, you can go like, hey, did you know that in 19? I don't wanna give any of em away, but you can say, did you know? And then say some of these things. So what we did was we took some of the crazier things that have happened in World cup history and we wrote them in a way that would entice our casual fan Isabella, that maybe she'd go, I wanna know more about this. So, Isabella, you have in front of you a list of some sentences that are crazy things that have happened in World cup history. And I'm going to let you tell us which ones you want to hear and then we will tell you the. We'll put the meat on the bone and tell you the story.
Chris
M. Speaking of meat on the bone, I love to bite it off.
Katie Nolan
What's that?
Chris
I want to. Why I want to choose this title Once bitten Twice, also bitten and then bitten one more time.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, that's really good. That's really good. And I like, I like the way that.
Chris
What I want to know was it but once bitten twice and then also bitten again.
Katie Nolan
Well, you know the, the phrase once bitten, twice shy. Maybe you don't. Well, I know you Have. Because I know you've heard the Christmas song. Last Christmas. You ever heard Last Christmas? You know, he says, once bitten and twice shy. Oh, yeah. So anyway, it's a thing old people say and it doesn't matter. Weirdos. It was just a fun way to get you into the bit about Luis Suarez, who was a bit of a biter, would we say, guys, he just was kind of known for biting. So this was the 2014 FIFA World Cup. He plays for Uruguay. Played for. Doesn't anymore. But in 2014 he had already at that point, bit two people.
Chris
Jeez.
Katie Nolan
He bit somebody in 2010 on a soccer field, not during the World cup. And in 2013, he bit someone.
Chris
Do we know where does he have a spot? He goes for.
Katie Nolan
Oh, good question.
Brady
I bet one shoulder, one arm, shoulder,
Katie Nolan
arm, and then the next one's a shoulder as well. Right. So it's. So I guess, Isabella, if we had to pick. He likes the shoulder.
Isabella
Okay.
Katie Nolan
And it is a meaty place for a bite.
Chris
And I guess it's not affecting the part that you need in soccer.
Katie Nolan
I still wouldn't do it. So this was 2014. Again, he had already bitten twice. And I'm sure at some point he said, I promise I'm not gonna do any more biting. You guys can count on me. Uruguay. And they actually, that was wrong. They couldn't. So he bit an Italian defender, Giorgio Cellini, on the shoulder during a group stage match. Now, the refs did not see it and so nothing happened, I don't think in match. But then afterwards they found out. And because he was a repeat offender, he received a nine game ban from international matches and he was banned for four months from all football related activities. So it was like, you, buddy, clearly this is why you play soccer. This is an extra. This is what you're here to do. And because of that, we cannot let you play like, sorry, any soccer.
Chris
He should be like an eating contest kind of person.
Katie Nolan
That is something he could. Although I don't think they're doing a lot of chewing either.
Brady
When you think about it, the one thing that happened in the game is that you see Cellini running over to the referee, like pulling down his jersey, being like, I have teeth marks. Where do you think these came from?
Katie Nolan
Yeah, absolutely crazy. No card being issued is nuts. Uruguay scored right after it and they ended up winning 1 nil. They eliminated Italy from the tournament. So not great, you know, not the greatest. But Suarez issued a public apology and the two have since reconciled. So no hard feelings, no lasting impression.
Chris
If you Will. Okay.
Katie Nolan
Not to invoke the teeth. Okay. What else. What other sentence really gets you going here?
Chris
I'm liking the hand of God and the nose of the 80s.
Katie Nolan
Okay. Wow. The nose of the 80s. Good job, Brady.
Chris
I'm assuming this is. Is this coke related?
Katie Nolan
It is cocaine related. I would you. Do we have to say allegedly? I don't think we even do.
Brady
I mean, he was suspended twice.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. This, of course, is Diego Maradona in the hand of God. It's from 1986. This was the. A quarterfinal match between Argentina and England. This was in Mexico City. A scoreless tie in the 51st minute was broken by. By Diego punching the ball into the net. Used his hand just. You may even want to look this one up just to see he fully hand on the ball.
Chris
Wait, what's his name again? Mar. Maradona.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, Diego Maradona. Maradona. M A R A D O N A. And, and. And the cocaine of it all is he just. He did a lot of coke.
Brady
He gets suspended for 15 months twice for cocaine use.
Chris
And the picture basically looks like volleyball. Yeah, he's just like, pretty much.
Maddy Kelly
Yeah.
Chris
And I'm assuming it didn't count.
Katie Nolan
No, they counted. Unfortunately for you, you're correct, but incorrect, because it shouldn't have, obviously. But it did count. Despite furious protests from English players, obviously none of the match officials saw the handball, so the goal was allowed to stand.
Chris
Oh, that's crazy.
Katie Nolan
In a post match press conference, Again, this was 1986. He coyly addressed the controversy, stating that the goal was scored, quote, a little with the head of Maradona and a little with the hand of God. And so they call this bro.
Chris
That's. That's a full grip on the ball that I'm looking at. That's crazy.
Katie Nolan
And then, I mean, four minutes later, people forget. He scored that goal of the century that everybody always talks about. It was right after this crazy goal. Fun fact here. The jersey that he wore during this game was sold at auction in 2022 for over $9 million. That's how famous this moment is in World cup history. So that was a big one.
Chris (Master Editor)
Wow.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, Isabella, you would have loved him as a player. Just electric. I really think you would have been into the damn.
Brady
Or just as a hang.
Katie Nolan
I saw somebody try to argue that he, like, he played through injury and it's like, well, he had help. You know, coke can get you through a lot. It kind of helps you ignore whatever you're actually going through. What else, Isabella? What moves you?
Chris
I'm liking England Star eats a dodgy Bolognese and pays the price.
Katie Nolan
Oh, my God. Okay, this is crazy. And you should look up the video of this while we talk about it. So this was in 1990. English striker Gary Lineker. Yes. Famously suffered a stomach emergency and he. He pooped on the field. Okay. In a moment that only for me evokes that scene in Bridesmaids. He clearly sort of goes through something. You see him fall to the ground. And then much like.
Brady
Oh, no.
Katie Nolan
Much like a dog, he sort of scoots. I mean, you see a man realize that he. It has cameras on him.
Chris
Oh, he's grabbing it.
Katie Nolan
He has cameras on him. And he's. And everyone's looking. He's gonna have to get up. He knows what has happened. He's just clearly doing the thing where he's trying to see how much other people can see. And so he's clearly trying to check. Like, is it. Is it a lot? Is it a little? And I have never related to a pro athlete more than in that moment when you see him go, like, am I about to be mortified? Or will no one know?
Chris
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
And then later, he let everyone know it was a dodgy Bolognese that put him in that situation where he just was having something. I think a lot of people in America, at least, are going through right now. Liquid shits. Just a strong. We don't know where it's coming from. First they said lettuce. Dan and I felt safe. Then yesterday I heard Taco Bell. I heard that I feel very much in danger.
Chris
I'm very scared.
Katie Nolan
You don't run into a lot of lettuce, but we're eating Taco Bell twice a week, so I am worried. Yeah, well, I'll just subway for lunch
Brady
and did not think this through.
Isabella
Yo.
Katie Nolan
I would not. You couldn't pay me right now. We got a crisis and nobody helping the guy. The guy in charge of the agency wears jeans to the gym. So I don't really trust him to do literally anything. Isabella, anything else speaking to you.
Chris
Oh, yeah. I need to know about the player that learned that intentionally exposing one's penis mid game is frowned upon.
Katie Nolan
Okay. And would you believe it? That's a United States guy. That happened.
Brady
USA. USA.
Katie Nolan
This was in 2002. This was a group stage match between Mexico. And much like Jordan Henderson, the guy we told you from England who made a real Splash without playing, DeMarcus Beasley was not at the time playing. Correct.
Isabella
In this match.
Katie Nolan
He was on the side. I mean, he was like not in the game. But he.
Chris
It.
Katie Nolan
You know, sometimes you gotta pee in the middle of a match and it's going back into the locker room is too far away. And so I guess he thought that he could just go. I hate the way this is phrased in here. He pulled himself through one leg of his uniform, as one does and. And used himself to urinate on the sideline. Now he just had not thought through that the cameras could see that. And so we saw himself. Oh, little himself. You know, like that. We saw the little bees. Little bees.
Chris
I looked this up and don't end up. And the headline I see is the five most dis Disgusting moments in World Cup.
Katie Nolan
I bet the poop is. The poop has to be on there.
Chris (Master Editor)
That's.
Katie Nolan
The poop was pretty crazy.
Chris
Damn.
Katie Nolan
So, yeah, I've got.
Brady
Do it like NBA players, man. Just pee into a towel.
Katie Nolan
Is that it?
Brady
Oh, yeah.
Katie Nolan
Yo, that's. Somebody's gotta clean that towel.
Brady
It's better than this.
Katie Nolan
Can I also say I think I have more piss than a towel could hold. I don't think when I'm off in. Especially after last podcast. By the time I got there, I was like, this is like three days. I. But I don't think I could. Depending on the size of the towel. But thinking of an NBA towel.
Chris
Yeah, it's just like a little like hand towel.
Katie Nolan
It's not a. That's not a lot of absorbency.
Brady
I would imagine they've got special pee towels that they know can handle pee.
Katie Nolan
I'd hope just so you're not wiping your face at that point.
Chris
Can you just let them go to the bathroom?
Katie Nolan
Just take a break.
Chris (Master Editor)
Yeah, there's plenty of breaks during a game.
Katie Nolan
Pee into a. I'd rather you pee into a cup. At least I don't have. The cup isn't wet on the outside. If I have to take a towel. You just peed in. And Isabella definitely making me want to watch the World Cup. You like any of these other ones?
Chris
Yeah, I. I'll. Let's. Can we end on this one? World cup saved by a dog named Pickles.
Katie Nolan
Okay, so this is the 1966 World Cup. That means, by the way, that she's not choosing. I believe we had one about a Kuwaiti prince who ran out on field in the middle of a match, yelled at a ref until they took a goal off the board and they did. And then the match continued. I thought that was fucking crazy. And there was also one.
Brady
My favorite line in that story. Hold on.
Katie Nolan
Was.
Brady
Was that the punishments for that was that the referee was banned from refereeing international games forever, and the Kuwaiti Prince was fined $8,000.
Katie Nolan
The amount that Roger Goodell could legally donate to the Senate campaign of Jay Feely is the entirety of. I think that's off by $1,000. The discrepancy between that and a Kuwaiti, that's crazy. He just.
Brady
Kwati Prince, who has that much gold on him at any given time, charge
Katie Nolan
him something to run out on the field and go, that wasn't a goal. Until the ref goes, okay. And you know what? I actually think you're right. You make some really.
Chris
Take his life.
Katie Nolan
Take the goal. Insane. That must have been what he said. He had to go, if you don't take this goal, I will kill you right here. And he was like, no goal to me. I didn't see nothing. There was also the very first World Cup. Before we get into the one Isabella has chosen, our final story, the 1930 World Cup. There was a team that entirely missed the World cup because the boat that was supposed to take them there, they missed it, and so they had to forfeit all of their matches. That sucks. That's crazy. Same World Cup, I believe it was usa. A team doctor was running out to do something, started causing a scene about being at. Upset about a card or something that was issued while causing a scene, flipped his bag full of medical supplies, bursting open a glass vial that contained chloroform, and then passed out on the field. They had to cart him off because he got so upset. He chloroformed himself and they had to cart him off of the field. But the one that she has chosen is the World Cup. Saved by a dog named Pickles. This was the 1966.
Chris
Sorry.
Katie Nolan
No, no. If I'm interested, this is a good one.
Chris
Okay.
Katie Nolan
Just also wanted to give my honorable mentions because those are fucking insane. This was 1966. The Jules Remy trophy. It was. That's what it's still called to this day.
Brady
No, it's a different trophy. Well, maybe. Maybe it's called the same thing. It's definitely a different trophy than it used to be.
Katie Nolan
If it's a different trophy, I'd hope it's named something different. You can't just. This isn't the first season of the sitcom.
Chris (Master Editor)
It's simply called the FIFA World cup trophy. Boo.
Katie Nolan
Oh, and let's not bring that to anyone's attention. Let's not bring that to anyone's attention or Trump's gonna go. We'll call it the Trump Trophy. And please cut that. Don't let anybody get an idea. Don't tell them we said this. But anyway, the trophy was stolen March 20, 1966, while on display at a Methodist Central hall in London, just four months before the World Cup. They were displaying it. Come take a look. The World cup, boom. It's gone. Following the theft, the Football association received a 15,000 pound ransom demand. So somebody said, I'll give you back your cup if you give me £15,000, along with the removable lining from the top of the trophy. So they basically proved they had it and said, Give me £15,000 money, not of, of chocolate or something, just £15,000 and. And I'll give it back to you. Seven days later, on March 27, 1966, a four year old black and white collie dog named Pickles was out for a walk with his owner in South London. Pickles sniffed out a package wrapped in newspaper that was hidden under a neighbor's garden hedge. And inside, the owner discovered the missing World cup trophy. Pickles was instantly hailed as a national hero and was rewarded with the National Canine Defense League's silver medal.
Chris
Whoa.
Katie Nolan
What did the gold medal winning dog get that year? What did he do? Did he save someone from a burning building? Because what more does a collie gotta do to get the gold? You found the World cup trophy hiding under someone's bush?
Chris
Yeah. Aw, thanks Pickles.
Katie Nolan
Thanks, Pickles. You saved the World Cup. That's what Shohei Ohtani should have written his book about a dog that saved the World Cup. Anyone have anything to add on this? On details?
Brady
I don't know why I thought I could Google what the gold medal winner of the 1966 canine defense.
Katie Nolan
We pull that up. We pull up the canine defense spelled with a C league, and see who they.
Chris
Hey, if you know, reach out to us, call our voicemail. 646-801-0043.
Katie Nolan
That's three. That's three. That's right. Let us know. Let us know if that's your dog. Well, first, May they rest in peace. Unless we figure, and if not, if they're still with us, give me the secret. Cause I don't want Myrtle to ever have to go anywhere, you know, she also would not sniff out a trophy. The only thing she's ever sniffed out, and she does it pretty regularly, is chicken bones on the street of Manhattan. And then she just swallows them sideways while we're on a walk. So Myrnal.
Isabella
Me too.
Katie Nolan
All of a sudden she's just going, I gotta reach in and go, well, that one was barbecue. Great. I'm glad I know. So anyway, that should help you guys with stuff to talk about. If you go to a World cup watch party, you can just bring up, hey, did you guys know this crazy fun fact that's a service we did for you. And if nobody's responding to any of that, tell them that Alexi Lawless, the guy they can't stand, who is coming on screen, I assume for the final. He will be in studio for the pre and mid game halftime and post game show. Alexi Lawless, the redhead who represents America, while the other two, Ibrahimovic and what's his face, Thierry Henri and Rebecca Lowe, who we love and adore, look on with disdain. They barely disguise that guy for some reason throughout this World cup has been recording on his TikTok medleys of him playing acoustic guitar. And let me just. He fits that trope, does he not? Alexi Lawless looks like the guy who pulls out his guitar at a party and goes, want to hear Wonderwall? He's been going through medleys of the top 10 pop songs from the years. Chris, do you know what year he started doing them?
Chris (Master Editor)
Started in 1970 is through until 2013.
Katie Nolan
Do you know how many fucking medleys of 10 songs that is that you can find online? And it's just. They're not getting tons of views. But you could be the person who brings that to your World cup watch party. You can go, have you seen Alexi Lawless breaking out his any. And he doesn't. It's fine. They're not good enough to post. Am I allowed to say that or am I supposed to encourage everybody's artistic, you know, do what you good for.
Chris
You can encourage it, but you can still fucking hate it.
Maddy Kelly
Good for you.
Katie Nolan
The amount of. Thank you. The amount of work that's going into this is like, is this worth it? Are we seeing an roi, Alexa? Are we just doing this love of the game?
Maddy Kelly
I don't.
Katie Nolan
Whatever, man. Bring that to your party and see if they like it. Thank you again to Xfinity for sponsoring this week's Soccer Spotlight. Stay on top of what everyone is talking about with Xfinity. Maddy Kelly
Yes.
Katie Nolan
How was that?
Maddy Kelly
It was amazing. It was really funny experience because I just finished freezing my eggs the day before.
Katie Nolan
Oh, wow.
Maddy Kelly
So I had the full surgery. So I like did a full medical procedure that makes you go crazy. And they were like, you're actually gonna tape the Tonight show on Tuesday. And I was like, of course I am. Of course I am.
Katie Nolan
But it went well.
Maddy Kelly
Yeah, it did. But there's a. If you watch the YouTube, after I finish my set, I go into the mic. Cause I think it was just like I'd done it and this tiny little sound came out of me.
Katie Nolan
And that's. And that's none of your business. You can't help that. It's just let me make my weird little sound. I have a lot going on up here.
Maddy Kelly
I'm a woman in comedy.
Katie Nolan
I'm a woman in comedy and in crisis at the moment. Just sort of dealing with a lot.
Maddy Kelly
Yeah. Chemically, I have seven new eggs I gotta worry about that are frozen at 37th and Park.
Katie Nolan
Sick. Well, at least you know where they are.
Maddy Kelly
I know. And they fancy little Manhattan eggs.
Katie Nolan
Look at that. A nice walk up, I hope.
Maddy Kelly
Oh, it's a beautiful building.
Katie Nolan
Gorgeous. Stunning. Stunning. Pre war. We talk sports here, but you don't have to know a lot or care a lot. But I do want to know your background in it. So I know when you were younger, you were ranked as a tennis player.
Maddy Kelly
Yes.
Katie Nolan
So you were very good.
Maddy Kelly
I mean, I was kind of the bad boy of the under 12 tennis circuit in British Columbia campus.
Katie Nolan
Okay, tell me more.
Maddy Kelly
I was, like, rebellious. I didn't like it. I don't know why I was doing it. My dad wanted me to get a scholarship for sports. So he was playing the odds. So he was like, you're either gonna play golf or tennis. And my parents were separated. My dad was like, single dad, had a lot of time on his hands.
Katie Nolan
Dangerous.
Maddy Kelly
Yeah. And he also thought it was sexist to raise me as a girl, so he just.
Katie Nolan
Okay, dad.
Maddy Kelly
Yeah, I know. Kinda. I think I like that in a way. Yeah. And the big. The big joke story that we make fun of him now is that he used to make me train, like, under. Like an underpass, kinda. And there was, like, homeless people, like, hanging out down there. And, like, he'd make me do that in the snow.
Katie Nolan
For what? Like hitting balls against a practicing.
Maddy Kelly
But I don't know. I mean, it didn't. I don't think anyone's ever really gone pro for a sport they don't really like. Like, even.
Katie Nolan
I think you'd be surprised, but I do. It weeds out most people in the years you've got to really.
Maddy Kelly
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
Dedicate your life to it. Which tennis did that for you? Around what age? When did you start to go? This is probably not.
Maddy Kelly
I think as soon as I got to high school, I was just like, I really want to do a play. Isn't it the opposite?
Katie Nolan
And did you.
Maddy Kelly
Oh, yeah.
Katie Nolan
Good. A lot of plays.
Maddy Kelly
Yeah. And that was intense in its own way, you know?
Isabella
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
What was your fit? Are you. Were you, like, the lead in your place?
Maddy Kelly
The lead I got there, girl. I know. That's always the origin story, you know, it's like. It feels like still to this day, I'm like, well, that was the biggest thing I've ever done. How about that?
Katie Nolan
What was your. What was your big, like, oh, my God, we gotta go see the local high school production of something. Cause Maddie has a solo there in that second act. Which play was like the big play for you?
Maddy Kelly
That's such a generous question to let me talk about this because I think it's embarrassing to still care about what plays you in high school?
Katie Nolan
But I like it. And I know you do. You're wearing capris.
Maddy Kelly
I'm wearing my little capris, yeah. I was in a play called Daisy pulls it off. When I first got to my new school, I was like, new kid in school, walk in, get the lead, get Daisy. I was like 14. It was a two and a half hour play entirely in a pre war British accent. I had like 18 monologues.
Katie Nolan
Oh, my God.
Maddy Kelly
And the drama teacher was like a whiplash style crazy person.
Chris (Master Editor)
Whoa.
Maddy Kelly
So it was kind of like out of the pot, like into the fire. Exactly. You're done with dad tennis, but now you're gonna deal with this British sharp little bob dramatic.
Katie Nolan
And that turned you into the actor you are today.
Maddy Kelly
Yeah, it turned me into fire. The cash hang.
Katie Nolan
That I am such a chill hang.
Maddy Kelly
Yeah. The laid back for a music theater.
Katie Nolan
Stand up comed.
Maddy Kelly
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
Okay, so tennis, not so much for you, but I will say ranked 16th in British Columbia for girls under 12, which I don't think we should be ranking girls under 12, personally. I think they should all be number one or leave them alone.
Chris (Master Editor)
Yes.
Katie Nolan
And then you went on to play soccer also?
Maddy Kelly
I was playing soccer like 5 to 14. I played on the 10th and 10th.
Katie Nolan
That's good. Soccer ages.
Maddy Kelly
Yeah, yeah, yeah. I was really good at throw inside.
Katie Nolan
Nice.
Maddy Kelly
I was always like, let's use our hands. How about that?
Katie Nolan
Let me be the part where we go a little off script and do the thing we're not supposed to do. I'm using my hands.
Maddy Kelly
I'm gonna use my hands.
Katie Nolan
Did you ever think about being a goalie? You can use your hands quite a bit.
Maddy Kelly
No, I think I was too small. It was like leaving too much surface area.
Chris (Master Editor)
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
You don't take up a lot of space which is needed in that giant net.
Maddy Kelly
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
So throw ins. And that was just a throw in specialist.
Maddy Kelly
I also had a very brief stint in gymnastics, which I really wanted to pursue. But my parents, which now I look back on this and think this was genius. But they were like, no way.
Katie Nolan
Why is it genius? And why'd they say no?
Maddy Kelly
Because it was so intense. Like they were making us all. They wouldn't let the parents watch the practices. And they. And it's red flag because they were sort of like abusing us.
Katie Nolan
Because they were abusing us.
Maddy Kelly
Yeah, like they were pushing our bodies to points that I think at the time, you think like, oh, it's so cool. I'm flexible. And you get older and you're like,
Katie Nolan
wait, are we talking over splits? Because that's what I. That's my first memory of trauma. I was a rhythmic gymnast, which is always an embarrassing to think to say to a gymnast, because it was like, oh, so you don't do any of the flips or any of the danger. But I.
Maddy Kelly
You have a ribbon. We.
Isabella
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
And a hoop and a ball and clubs.
Maddy Kelly
The ball was the most embarrassing one because I was also in rhythmic gymnastics. For the record.
Chris (Master Editor)
No, Shut up.
Maddy Kelly
Yes, I was. Shut up. Yes.
Katie Nolan
I've never in my life, met in my adulthood another person who even knows what it is.
Maddy Kelly
Oh, yeah, Maddie.
Katie Nolan
Clubs were most embarrassing to me because I always bonked myself with them. They were like, very. For some reason, they make you train on the heavy ones, and then as you get older, they give you the rubber ones that throw those things around, but the heavy plastic ones. Anyway, there was a reason I was bringing this up, and it was over splits. They would make you do a split. Okay. So that's one leg for those listening, one leg forward, one leg back. A split. You know what it is. And then they take your front leg and put it for us. It was on a folding chair. You would put the heel of your front leg that's in a split on a folding chair so that you're pushing your torso to make the split more than 180 degrees. And then we would have a coach come and sit on our butts to push us down even further.
Maddy Kelly
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
And I remember when I told people in school that they were like, what?
Maddy Kelly
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
And it was so normal.
Maddy Kelly
That was like the beginning. That was like, if you're. You're here for a reason.
Brady
Yeah.
Maddy Kelly
But when the more advanced girls were doing it in between two chairs.
Katie Nolan
Yes.
Maddy Kelly
So they were suspended.
Katie Nolan
Front leg on a chair, back leg on a chair.
Maddy Kelly
And I was supposed to feel inferior because I wasn't doing the splits under two chairs. And now I look back at everything we know about hypermobility, and I'm like, okay, so none of those girls were gonna make any from this. And they're gonna have pain forever.
Katie Nolan
I know. And I thought the way we were told is, well, listen, it rips your muscles a little bit. That's why it hurts. But then they grow back more elongated. And that made enough sense.
Maddy Kelly
And you'll be skinny.
Katie Nolan
I went like, oh, perfect.
Chris (Master Editor)
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
And then I'll be popular. And then I'll have a boyfriend. And then, because I'm like nine, so I'm going like, this is what was meant for me.
Maddy Kelly
Right.
Katie Nolan
And now I have to sit Funny on every chair that I sit in. You can still probably do a split, though, can't you?
Maddy Kelly
No, I wasn't that good at that. I was really good at walkovers, all that, you know, I was like, just. I would walk around, like, just cartwheeling like an aerial. Yeah. But they wouldn't even give me the stick, by the way. They were just like, you have to master the floor. And I was like, damn. Could someone give me something?
Katie Nolan
Yeah, let me play around. I want to do the Lizzie McGuire.
Maddy Kelly
I'm already in rhythmic gymnastics. I'm already in the joke gymnastics. Like, give me the ribbon or something.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. No, they threw us right into it. They were like, pick that up and see what tricks you can do with it. But I was in group. We did all. Everything we did was group, so it was like a lot of.
Maddy Kelly
Did you also do dance?
Katie Nolan
Yeah, that was. It was. I did rhythmic gymnastics out of my dance center. They were like, we're starting a team. And then we would have to spend all of our time in Connecticut. Where's the, like, hub for rhythmic gymnastics? In Canada. Where did you travel for, like, your regional meets? Everything we did was in Connecticut.
Maddy Kelly
God, I don't know. My parents were like, this is a red flag. We're getting you out of here.
Katie Nolan
I think I was like, they were like, try it. And then they said, please don't.
Maddy Kelly
All I remember is that that was the year the movie Stick it came out.
Chris (Master Editor)
Hell, yeah.
Maddy Kelly
And I remember younger than me, the older girls were holding a newspaper, reading an article about it because they were so excited to see their life represented on film.
Katie Nolan
I won a junior Olympic gold medal. I should have said that up top. I'm sorry. I won a junior Olympic gold medal at rhythmic gymnastics.
Maddy Kelly
Is this, like, commonly known?
Katie Nolan
Yeah, I get made. It's because it's the punchline of us. It's just funny. It's. Nobody's going like, wow, I was 10. So it's like not real Olympics, but it technically counts.
Maddy Kelly
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
And is in my Wikipedia. And I just thought you should know so you know what you're dealing with.
Maddy Kelly
No, I'm really glad you said that.
Katie Nolan
Just so that you show me the required.
Maddy Kelly
Did you get along with the girls?
Katie Nolan
Respect.
Maddy Kelly
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
They were like my best friends because we spent rhythmic gymnastics was. Why are we talking about this? We'll move on in a second. But rhythmic gymnastics was like Saturday mornings. And that's like a formative time for a kid. You're like, it's your first sleep in of the week. Cause you got School all week and then you sleep in on Saturdays and kids would watch Saturday morning cartoons and then you would like discuss that. This was before when I was younger and there wasn't really a lot of Internet. You probably. The Internet was around by the time you were a kid.
Maddy Kelly
Yeah, like neopets.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, yeah, we had gigapets. We laid the groundwork for that. But anyway we. I didn't ever watch any Saturday morning cartoons because I was always doing over splits or whatever on Saturdays and Friday nights. And so yeah, they were my friends. There was drama though. I mean it was a bunch of like girls going through puberty together at the same time doing a sport nobody respected. So we had a lot of feelings, but yeah, we got through it.
Maddy Kelly
You had a lot of intensity. Yeah, I got along with the gymnastics girls, the tennis girls. I just could not. I never made a friend.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Isabella
Why?
Maddy Kelly
Because you're traveling. Same thing. Like you're traveling for these tournaments and stuff. And I just didn't get them. They were just. To be a good juniors tennis player you have to be really committed to just not messing up. And I just did not want to play like that. Like I just to this day if I play tennis it's like much more fun to do like higher risk shots and run around and Yeah, I have a western grip if that means anything to anyone.
Katie Nolan
That means a lot to me and
Maddy Kelly
I have since I was five for some reason. But these are my little rebellions, you know. Cause I wasn't actually really aligned in my sports career.
Katie Nolan
You're more like I just want to be a free flowing idea. I want to try and have fun with it. I don't want to be perfect. I don't want to be worried about winning and losing.
Maddy Kelly
But I mean I was really competitive. It was like I didn't want to win just because I put the ball back in the inner court long enough for them to mess up.
Katie Nolan
You wanted to do the shot that made somebody go like yes, like wow, how could she?
Maddy Kelly
Exactly.
Katie Nolan
You're like, yeah, that's right. You wanted to like win, win. I get that. I like that. That's the excite. You would have been an exciting tennis player to watch.
Maddy Kelly
One of the most exciting under 12 tennis players. Yeah.
Katie Nolan
And again, I'm not watching. A lot of young kids do a lot of green flag as as just by a personal policy. But if I were watching, I'd be rooting for you now. Speaking of rooting World cup, as a former soccer. How long did you do that for? Just like a little Right. You said you played soccer seven or eight years.
Maddy Kelly
Those girls are my best friends. I love the soccer girls.
Katie Nolan
That's what soccer has to be. You know, you can't really. There's probably, like, a girl or two that everyone's, like, weren't. She's not really in the group, but that's her choice, almost. She's like an independent. And then there's the group. You know what I mean? That's a good soccer. Like, a good makeup of a soccer team to me. And those were your best friends. So you liked soccer, I assume. Are you watching the World Cup?
Maddy Kelly
So I have been forced to watch
Katie Nolan
the World cup at gunpoint, literally.
Maddy Kelly
My. My darling boyfriend, who was so excited I was coming on the show, by the way.
Katie Nolan
Oh, hell, yeah. What's his name?
Maddy Kelly
Henry Hall.
Katie Nolan
Henry. Oh, full first and last. Henry Hall. We can Google him.
Maddy Kelly
Henry Hall.
Katie Nolan
What does he do? Don't say comic.
Maddy Kelly
No, he's a musician.
Katie Nolan
Okay. I was gonna say nice, and then I was like, well, we'll see.
Maddy Kelly
He's still got a mic in hand. Oh, yeah, we love him, but he is the biggest sports fan. Every story I'm about to tell is about is going to be in his presence. That's because we love watching sports together. I love it, but I can't with FIFA. I'm sorry.
Katie Nolan
Talk to me.
Maddy Kelly
Well, I just had the most exciting thing that's ever happened to me, which is I watched the entire NBA playoffs from the beginning, which culminated in me being in New York City for the Knicks to win. Okay.
Katie Nolan
Very awesome.
Maddy Kelly
That was a bigger deal than Fallon. Like, that was the luckiest thing that has ever happened to me. And then congratulations, by the way. Oh, thank you. You right away, like, nothing's happened. Everyone's like, oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. And now you're gonna watch tons of soccer. You're gonna watch weeks and weeks of soccer. The field is huge.
Katie Nolan
It's big.
Maddy Kelly
So they look tiny.
Katie Nolan
They do.
Maddy Kelly
Nothing happens sometimes. Come on. I mean, it's insane.
Katie Nolan
Let's be honest with each other.
Maddy Kelly
Next level with me.
Katie Nolan
A lot less happens than in the basketball. You were just watching. Yes.
Maddy Kelly
I don't like that. It's like a proxy for war. I don't like that. It's like, nationalist, and I don't. My biggest beef is that at the end of the game, after you've already been watching a lot of soccer, they tack on a random amount of time that they go, you know what?
Katie Nolan
12 more minutes.
Maddy Kelly
That's the only part that possibly could be exciting, is like, There being a concrete end to this, you know, like, I want to watch the buzzer or something. You know, it's like, what's gonna happen?
Katie Nolan
There's only two minutes left. Anything could happen. But now you go, there's only two minutes plus whatever that guy over there thinks.
Maddy Kelly
Yeah. And he's corrupt. I'm sure.
Katie Nolan
Sure.
Maddy Kelly
I'm sure he's corrupt. Sorry.
Katie Nolan
Pretty much all I know. You don't have to be sorry. They should be sorry. Honestly, they should be sorry. But a lot of it's pretty corrupt. I mean, the corruption did benefit the United States. Did you, like, did you have any thoughts on that?
Maddy Kelly
I mean, I listened to you talking about it.
Katie Nolan
Oh, my God, you did.
Maddy Kelly
Yes, I did. And I think I agreed with the listener who was like, I don't think Trump had much anything to do with it, because I think everyone already thought that was gonna happen. I think the call was already gonna happen, happen, because it didn't seem. That didn't. That obviously wasn't a red card.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. Thank you. Yeah. It's the correct opinion.
Maddy Kelly
I do like that I have opinions about the towels. In soccer, where there's basketball, that's the one thing where your friends are going, that's the technical. And you're like, what are you talking.
Katie Nolan
What do you mean? They bumped up against each other.
Maddy Kelly
I don't understand. You can't jump into the square that the jumps happen. Sorry.
Katie Nolan
This is what I've learned as, like, the sports I watch more casually. I go, I like watching other people fight about the fouls, but I'm like, I don't have the. I'm not jumping in on this. You guys have it out. Like, I'll do that on, like, NFL for. For pass interference. I'll get up. I'll. I'll go. That was pass interference. What do you mean? Like, I'm in on that. Right. But basketball, I'm usually going like, and that's a foul.
Chris
Right.
Katie Nolan
Hockey, I'll go, he slashed him. That's a cross check. Basketball, I go, he. So he tapped his finger and he can't do that.
Maddy Kelly
I didn't.
Katie Nolan
So, yeah, that's fair, I think. But soccer, it's kind of fun because you can just. They'll let you say whatever. You can argue that it should be or shouldn't be. You'll have support either way.
Maddy Kelly
Also, there's only one way to score, and it's just one point every time.
Katie Nolan
Oh, my God. I hadn't even really thought about this.
Chris (Master Editor)
I know.
Maddy Kelly
It's nice to have Diversity, Sure.
Katie Nolan
And I guess set pieces do offer a bit of diversity in terms of ways to score. Like, you've got a, you know, a corner kick or a free kick. But you're right, no matter what happens. One point.
Maddy Kelly
One point.
Katie Nolan
The most you can get out of anything.
Maddy Kelly
You have no idea how excited I am when there's a shootout happening.
Brady
Right.
Chris (Master Editor)
Yeah.
Chris
You.
Katie Nolan
So you like the end? You like when it goes to penalty kicks now, you know soccer Die hards. Hate it.
Maddy Kelly
Well, soccer diehards and I have very little in common, I think, because I don't understand what they're getting. They. Go to the park on your own. How about that? Walk around on the grass. If you like grass and leisure so
Katie Nolan
much, go do it.
Maddy Kelly
Relax.
Katie Nolan
Put your feet where your mouth is.
Maddy Kelly
Put your feet up.
Brady
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
And go do it. It.
Maddy Kelly
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
Don't make us watch.
Maddy Kelly
No disrespect to the athletes. Like, I'm happy for them.
Katie Nolan
Taken.
Maddy Kelly
I just don't really. It's not really.
Katie Nolan
Doesn't move you.
Maddy Kelly
No, you do.
Katie Nolan
You have a team. If you had to pick of the ones that are left that you found yourself, like, are you rooting for England? Are you rooting for.
Maddy Kelly
No, I was rooting for Canada or Cape Verde. Okay. Yeah.
Katie Nolan
And those. Canada did well. Canada did as well as Canada has done in the Men's World Cup. Canada does okay in the women's.
Maddy Kelly
Yes. When I was a kid, we went to so much soccer, actually live. And that was fun because it used to be at this very small stadium. Even though they were a major MLS team, they just didn't have a very big arena at the time. They now have moved, and it's a much bigger business, but it was very exciting. It was like watching professional soccer with, like, 400 people.
Katie Nolan
Crazy.
Maddy Kelly
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
And you liked it. You had soccer fever then. But now you're live.
Maddy Kelly
I'll watch anything live. I'll go. I go crazy for it. Yeah. Yeah.
Katie Nolan
What's your favorite sport to watch live?
Maddy Kelly
Baseball.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Maddy Kelly
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
Baseball's the best.
Maddy Kelly
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
You like baseball a lot?
Maddy Kelly
I love baseball. Yeah. It's, you know, it's not the greatest television product on earth, and it's hard to really care about it on television outside of the World Series, I think, or something with stakes.
Katie Nolan
But going to the ballpark is the best thing.
Maddy Kelly
It is my favorite thing. Society.
Katie Nolan
If it's affordable enough, it's the best way to waste a summer day. Totally. Let's just go to a ball game.
Maddy Kelly
You get your money's worth because you're there. Forever less.
Katie Nolan
Now they've gotten shorter. That pitcher block really did make everything move quicker.
Maddy Kelly
Right.
Katie Nolan
It's like, now I'll go to turn on like a. I'll be watching a different game and go, oh, let me catch the end of the Sox game. And it'll be the post game. And I'm like, they wrapped it up.
Maddy Kelly
They wrapped it up.
Katie Nolan
That was so quick. Now here's my issue with you in baseball. I don't want to fight. You seem very nice, very sweet. You're from. Did you hear that laugh? It's perfectly nice and perfectly sweet. You're from Canada.
Maddy Kelly
Mm. I knew this was coming.
Katie Nolan
You have to answer for it. I'm so sorry. You're a Dodgers fan.
Maddy Kelly
I'm a Dodgers fan.
Katie Nolan
Where did that and why did that.
Maddy Kelly
So my mom moved to LA when I was 12.
Katie Nolan
Okay.
Maddy Kelly
So I went to medical school.
Katie Nolan
I'm making. It's making more sense.
Maddy Kelly
Yeah. So there's a, you know, there's a route, there's a roots in Los Angeles for me. I have gone to four Dodgers games.
Chris
Okay.
Maddy Kelly
And rooted for them.
Katie Nolan
Great.
Maddy Kelly
Rooting for the home team in beautiful Dodgers Stadium. I have never been to a Blue Jays game. Okay. And I've been to lots of Vancouver Canadian games, which are the Triple A team for the Blue Jays.
Katie Nolan
Right. Of course. We all knew that.
Maddy Kelly
And of course, like, I would be so happy if Canada won a baseball award. I would. I would be really, really, really happy. But I just feel like the team that I like. I know Mookie. I know everybody. I know what their favorite restaurants are like. Cause I'm chilling with them.
Isabella
Yeah.
Maddy Kelly
And I know that.
Katie Nolan
Wait.
Maddy Kelly
Lit.
Katie Nolan
Wait. Literally.
Maddy Kelly
No.
Katie Nolan
But in my head, I was like, if. So I'm gonna be very upset. All right. So you just had to root against. I was home.
Maddy Kelly
I was agnostic in that I was very. I was just excited. I was excited.
Katie Nolan
You were agnostic.
Maddy Kelly
I was. I was really happy either way. I know people. No one likes me being a Dodgers fan. A. Because of nationalism.
Katie Nolan
And also, nobody likes the Dodgers. Yeah.
Maddy Kelly
It's like rooting for, like, Superman or something. Exactly.
Katie Nolan
So it's. I mean, look, you have every right to be. Don't let me bully you out of a fandom.
Maddy Kelly
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
But you will have to answer for it. You do have to give us your reasons. And you're doing a good job of it.
Maddy Kelly
Uh huh.
Katie Nolan
But I can't just go like. And that makes sense. You're from Canada's Fair and you were rooting for the Dodgers.
Maddy Kelly
Well, can I say this, I'm not a Top dog girl. Like, this is my only team that I root for that wins anything.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. And that's fair. And I believe you because I don't think you'd lie to me. You seem sweet. Like I said, I wouldn't lie to you. But you don't get to be the girl who roots for the top dog. And also the girl who's like, I don't root for top dogs.
Maddy Kelly
They're gonna know you as the drop in the NBA.
Katie Nolan
Yes, please. The Knicks, you said.
Maddy Kelly
No, I didn't.
Katie Nolan
Oh, you just experienced that.
Maddy Kelly
Yeah. As a New Yorker, I had to be here. But when people were saying, are you a Knicks fan? I was like, no, no, no. I just live in New York.
Katie Nolan
Did you wear the gear?
Maddy Kelly
No.
Katie Nolan
Okay. I like a line was drawn.
Maddy Kelly
Yeah, I do like that.
Katie Nolan
I respect that. Who do you root for then?
Maddy Kelly
The Clippers.
Katie Nolan
Oh, boy.
Maddy Kelly
So I have my. I have my thing.
Katie Nolan
And that's. We blame mom for that as well. That's the LA team you chose when you were.
Maddy Kelly
When I was a kid, I used to go to Grizzlies games when they were in Vancouver.
Katie Nolan
That's what it.
Maddy Kelly
They.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, yeah.
Maddy Kelly
And it again, makes no sense for me. I've never seen the Raptors. I've been to Toronto two times. I think I'm really not attached to Toronto. I can't stress that enough. And I've been to LA 1,000 times.
Chris
Okay.
Maddy Kelly
I. I've lived in LA for years of my life. I've been to Toronto two times. Okay.
Brady
Okay.
Maddy Kelly
And I am an underdog girl. I like Billy Crystal and I root for the Clippers.
Katie Nolan
Three good reasons.
Maddy Kelly
And when you go to the Clipper, it is really exciting when they win.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Maddy Kelly
When you go to the Lakers, you. They are. They are demolishing the other team by so much that they don't even have their good players out. And no one is clapping because it is rude to cheer for a two point shot when you're 30 points up. So it becomes like a golf environment, in my opinion. Which.
Katie Nolan
Which we don't like.
Maddy Kelly
Oh, I mean, just. I want to go crazy.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, you want to go.
Maddy Kelly
That's why I'm there.
Katie Nolan
And so you're a Clippers fan, and
Maddy Kelly
so I'm a Clippers fan.
Katie Nolan
And. And I just would be remiss if I didn't ask you then if you've got thoughts on the Kawhi Clippers situation
Maddy Kelly
and what is it?
Katie Nolan
Okay, so what it is is treetops ironically. So Kawhi Leonard signed a big contract with the Clippers however many years ago that was that he went to your team and they're alleging. It is alleged that he may have circumvented the salary cap. Whereas the Clippers paid him more money than legally they would be able to pay him under the rules of how the NBA works by getting him a gig on the side. That was a sponsorship job with a company, but it wasn't real. It was like a no show job. And all it was was them funneling money directly to Kawhi Leonard without the outside the purview of the NBA. So basically breaking the rules to give him more money. Then they traded him back to Toronto and they were gonna let that happen. And the NBA said, well hold on, you can't trade him until we figure out if he did this or not. And now there's a second plane that is at the tower. There is a second story which is that they think there might be another job he had that was another outside of why do they have salary caps? What a prescient question. Because we're getting into that in baseball next season probably. I think it's for competitive advantage is the number one reason given. It's like if everybody can spend as much as going to get some teams that don't want to spend and they never do and then teams like let's say the Dodgers, who buy everybody they can and all the players want the most money so they all end up going to one team. And that's why the Dodgers have an all star team that plays against everybody else in the league because there's no limit to what they can pay them. So a salary cap would make it so that every team only can get to this much and then everybody's got to figure out the rest. It like puts a ceiling off the argument against is that like who are you to tell me how much money I can make?
Maddy Kelly
Right.
Katie Nolan
I thought a free market was what we're always talking about in capitalism. Nobody caps the owner's money that they can make.
Maddy Kelly
Right.
Katie Nolan
So why put a cap on the players? So there's.
Maddy Kelly
Oh, do you want to know my NFL team?
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Maddy Kelly
Talking about the business of sports. Green Bay Packers.
Katie Nolan
Okay.
Maddy Kelly
By the town.
Katie Nolan
You.
Maddy Kelly
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
Well, not by viewers like you.
Maddy Kelly
Not me per se, but no.
Katie Nolan
I heard you own the Packers.
Maddy Kelly
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
Don't you have a steak coming out
Maddy Kelly
now and telling you I'm this, I'm the.
Katie Nolan
They were good though when you started liking them.
Chris
No, I.
Maddy Kelly
No, I don't really know when I started Liking them. I. I bought a jacket and then the fandom sort of followed the jacket, if you can believe it.
Katie Nolan
I can.
Maddy Kelly
I needed a winter jacket and it was a really cute.
Katie Nolan
Where was. You were just in Wisconsin.
Maddy Kelly
I was actually in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Katie Nolan
Okay.
Maddy Kelly
But a lot of Canadians cheer for
Katie Nolan
the packers and that's because the packers were good.
Maddy Kelly
So I think it's because it's just the closeness. The closeness.
Katie Nolan
But it helped that they were good.
Maddy Kelly
I don't think they were good when I started doing this. Okay.
Katie Nolan
All right, I'll take your word for it.
Maddy Kelly
That was three years ago. Were they good three years ago? Yeah. No. So, yeah. So I'm good.
Katie Nolan
I keep forgetting that your life isn't
Maddy Kelly
as long and my sports life certainly is not just a little short.
Katie Nolan
Well, listen, I was thinking about you rooting for the Dodgers against again, Canada, because the Blue Jays are the only Canadian team in Major League Baseball at this point.
Maddy Kelly
I wasn't rooting for them that hard at that time. I was. I was hoping that they would.
Katie Nolan
That everyone had fun, that everybody had a good time, that it was just a bunch of ties. I mean, it was a close series.
Maddy Kelly
Yeah. I know.
Katie Nolan
You watched the whole World Series.
Maddy Kelly
Watch the whole World Series. I actually have a good story, if you want to.
Katie Nolan
I would love it.
Maddy Kelly
Okay. So the first night I met my boyfriend's parents was game seven. They went to game seven, Right, that series. Yeah. And.
Katie Nolan
Oh, yeah, the series went to seven. I was thinking about your boyfriend's parents and if they went.
Maddy Kelly
No, we were watching it on television. But it was the night that I met them, so, you know, I was very nervous.
Katie Nolan
High stress environment to enter.
Maddy Kelly
Yes. And they're an LA family, so they're true Dodgers fans because they have lived in LA for generations.
Katie Nolan
Yes.
Maddy Kelly
And I, I was really nervous and they were really nervous about the game. And the dog is very sensitive, their dog. So the dog was like dry heaving for the entire game because we kept like cheering. He's like a. I guess he's like a doodle something something. But he's quite big and he's very cute, but he's. He is special. He's a different kind of guy. And he was really just having a very physical reaction to all of our excitement. And so was my boyfriend, by the way, because we tried to sit down to dinner at some point during the game and his mom said to me, so where did you go to college? And Henry stood up and said, guys, I can't do this right now. And went back to the TV So we're watching the whole game.
Katie Nolan
It's too deep. And there's a lot going on.
Maddy Kelly
Every time something happens, the dog starts dry heaving.
Katie Nolan
Perfect.
Maddy Kelly
And then the last moment of the. Which we don't know this is gonna be the last moment, but it is in this moment, the bat is cracked, the first basement is out. And we all scream. And then the dog throws up.
Katie Nolan
Oh, no.
Maddy Kelly
Into Brad, the father's hands.
Katie Nolan
Oh, no.
Maddy Kelly
And then the double play happens. So the other guy gets out.
Katie Nolan
Oh, no.
Maddy Kelly
So then Henry screams, we just won the World Series. And then Brad says, can I get a little help here? Because his hands are full of dog throw up. And then we laughed so hard, I had a panic attack.
Chris
What?
Maddy Kelly
I couldn't stop laughing.
Chris
What?
Maddy Kelly
That was just delirious.
Katie Nolan
I mean, it is. I would be delirious too, to see someone cup their hands, let the dog
Maddy Kelly
throw up on the couch.
Katie Nolan
Go for it. Oh, I guess couch would be.
Maddy Kelly
Yeah, it was the couch.
Katie Nolan
I usually try to grab and move to hardwood and then just drop.
Maddy Kelly
Well, we've been doing that every time he started to heave. But this was a really big moment.
Katie Nolan
Crazy for the dog to have psyched you out the whole time. Fried wolf. The entire World Series. And then at the very end, go like, here, here it is. But it also was kind of beautiful in a way. It's kind of beautiful.
Maddy Kelly
We all let go in that moment.
Katie Nolan
We all puked. And then a panic attack.
Maddy Kelly
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
At the house of your boyfriends. That was quite a day for you.
Maddy Kelly
I know. It was really intense.
Katie Nolan
That was quite. And were they weird to you because you are Canadian or were you just like, I'm in that room. Were you playing to the. Like, I don't even care about Canada.
Maddy Kelly
I actually, I was like, I'll be happy at la. Which was true.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Maddy Kelly
Because I was already a Dodgers fan. Because I had been going to Dodgers games.
Katie Nolan
Sure.
Maddy Kelly
For years.
Katie Nolan
Sure.
Maddy Kelly
Okay.
Katie Nolan
And so it wasn't hard to root against the Blue Jays, but she technically wasn't. I have a lot. There was a long line of questioning in here, like, how could you? Who do you think you are? I also have this bit doesn't land as hard now, but Canadians who seem borderline traitorous to me. Would you like to hear some of these?
Maddy Kelly
Oh, sure.
Katie Nolan
So Tate McCrae.
Maddy Kelly
Uh huh.
Katie Nolan
What's her deal? She. When we were going to the Olympics, she recorded a hype video for Team usa.
Maddy Kelly
Oh, damn.
Katie Nolan
That was like, go get em, guys. And she was, you know, rumored to be dating. I think they're no longer dating, but Jack Hughes, who was the young. One of the young stars of the men's hockey team. But, like, you're Canadian. And so then when they called her out on it, she said, you guys know I'm Canada. Down.
Maddy Kelly
Oh.
Katie Nolan
And so I was wondering if that was enough to make you go, okay, Tate McRae.
Maddy Kelly
Like, I mean, if she's dating someone on the team. Not anymore, but if she was at the time, can we give her that?
Katie Nolan
I guess. But just feels like if I were, you know, dating a Canadian, I would go, screw you. I hope you lose out there, you know?
Maddy Kelly
Oh, my.
Katie Nolan
It's the Olympics. Yes. Root for Team usa. I root for Team USA Even when I'm not too thrilled with the way that we are as a country right now. It's like. It's what you do. You support your country's ethnicity, athletes. That's the right thing to. I see Canada doesn't feel this way.
Maddy Kelly
No, you would never see me rooting for Team USA right over King.
Katie Nolan
Oh, so that's.
Maddy Kelly
That would never happen.
Katie Nolan
That's where we draw the line.
Maddy Kelly
But this is what I'm talking about. About, like, cities versus countries. You know, if it was Vancouver, if it was the Canucks versus the Kings, like, there is no way on planet earth that I would be even remotely happy if the Kings won. Okay. I just don't mess with Toronto that much. And guess what? They don't really mess with me that much either. Either.
Katie Nolan
Damn, they got beef.
Maddy Kelly
It's a. Weirdly, like, this is, like, so boring, but Canada is just, like, really expensive to travel within Canada.
Katie Nolan
Huh.
Maddy Kelly
So you don't go that much around, right? Yeah.
Katie Nolan
Interesting. And you used to come down to us, but then we were kind of mean to you, right?
Maddy Kelly
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
But I couldn't even stop coming. And congrats.
Maddy Kelly
And I moved here voluntarily.
Katie Nolan
I'm not even. We don't even have to get into this. I didn't mean to get us into this. I was like. I was, like, living here, it's. And thank you for liking it. We love that you like it.
Maddy Kelly
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
Wayne Gretzky, he's kind of like a American Canadian guy now, you know? You don't like this list. Justin Trudeau, he picked Katy. He didn't watch Canada play their World cup opener. He went to the US Opener because Katy Perry was performing.
Maddy Kelly
He's done far worse things than that.
Katie Nolan
I couldn't think of any. That's top of the list of bad things. Okay, so that's. That was Canadians who seem borderline Traitorous to me. Now, onto our next bit. It basketball we talked about a little bit. Did you see the story everyone's talking about right now is LeBron. We're familiar, of course, with LeBron James, where he's going to go, where he will end up. And there was this story that an NBA insider told us that LeBron James agent Rich Paul has basically said they're not even going to talk to every single team about where, because LeBron's a free agent can go anywhere. They're not necessarily talking to every team, but they did want some teams to just send him a voice note that he would play for LeBron James to convince him.
Maddy Kelly
That's awesome about your team.
Katie Nolan
And it just feels crazy to me to get executives to make an elevator pitch in a voice note in front of LeBron James.
Maddy Kelly
Okay, I'm gonna do one.
Katie Nolan
Perfect.
Maddy Kelly
Okay. LeBron Clippers. You can stay in LA. You love your house. You can go to your son's games. You can be a good dad. And it would be cool. It would be very cool if you did that, I think. And it would be really unexpected.
Katie Nolan
That was really good. Boop, boop, boop. Went pretty close.
Maddy Kelly
And I thought there's some alternative, you know, revenue streams if you need them.
Katie Nolan
Damn. Damn. We'll put that in. We'll make sure that makes it in. Even though I said, boop, boop, boop, just put it before that and make sure that stays in. Cause I think that's the.
Brady
The.
Katie Nolan
That's how you're gonna get him.
Maddy Kelly
Where do you think he's gonna go?
Katie Nolan
I don't know. I just want him to tell me soon. I don't want to do this for another month. It's. Having a daily radio show is like when LeBron is maybe going somewhere. Everybody wants to talk about that. And I get bored talking about the same thing for too long. So I'm just.
Maddy Kelly
I'm just happy he's still playing.
Katie Nolan
Me too.
Maddy Kelly
I don't want him to quit.
Katie Nolan
Me neither. Because then the average age of the NBA player drops low immediately. He's doing a lot of work on the top end to make me feel not old. Sports will make you feel very old because they'll talk about guys in their late 30s, like they're in their late 70s, right? And so once he leaves and I just. Sometimes you're. You'll hit this age. You'll get there where you look at the athletes and you go, everyone's a baby. What the hell? It feels like you're watching high school sports. And so LeBron sticking around for a while makes me comfortable.
Maddy Kelly
I feel that way about musicians.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Maddy Kelly
I'm like. Like, you're 22.
Katie Nolan
What do you know about. What are you singing about? Life. You've had heartbreak where. When.
Maddy Kelly
Right, right.
Katie Nolan
But jams, though, they are jams. Here's a fun one. Here's a fun one you're gonna love.
Maddy Kelly
Okay.
Katie Nolan
It's a bit, and it's called, are you Maddie about or not?
Maddy Kelly
Oh, fun.
Katie Nolan
Do you get it?
Maddy Kelly
Yep.
Katie Nolan
You don't need me to explain it. We'll just tell you a list of stuff that's happening in sports, and you'll say, like, I'm Maddie about it or I'm not mad about it.
Maddy Kelly
Right.
Katie Nolan
Whatever you feel like doing with it, it's. Your name's Maddie, and mad is an emotion. Those are the connections you need to do.
Maddy Kelly
I got it.
Katie Nolan
Great. First two tennis players got married in a secret ceremony on Sunday, July 12, during the Wimbledon men's final. One of them, Alex Diminar, was the number five seed on the men's side of the tournament. They planned their wedding for the day of the Wimbledon final. People are mad about that because they're like, what if you were in the final? How could you have planned? You know, weddings take, like, a lot of planning and a lot goes into it. So it's like you had to really know you weren't gonna make it to the finals of Wimbledon. So what do you think? How do you feel about that?
Maddy Kelly
It sounds like a great way to cut costs because a lot of your co workers are not going to be able to come.
Katie Nolan
Whoa. You're already next steps.
Maddy Kelly
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
That's smart of, like, whoa, they can't make it.
Maddy Kelly
And maybe it's like, God, I just need something to do. If I'm not in the finals of Wimbledon, I'm going to feel so bad. Like, might as well get married.
Katie Nolan
Might as well have everybody come, celebrate me, give speeches about how much they love me.
Maddy Kelly
It's like I was. I'm a bridesmaid, and I was up to this big acting job, and I was like, at least if I don't get the acting job, I won't have to be worried about not making my bridesmaid day.
Katie Nolan
That's right.
Maddy Kelly
You know, people don't know it's hard. It's not just the one Wimbledon. You got to do it every year. It's like, just for laughs. When I used to not get just for laughs every summer, I'd be like, God, I'm gonna turn My. I'm gonna throw my phone in the toilet for a week.
Katie Nolan
For the week that everybody's there.
Maddy Kelly
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
And you did get it.
Maddy Kelly
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
You got new faces, right?
Maddy Kelly
I did. And I'm going back next week.
Katie Nolan
Nice.
Maddy Kelly
Oh, that's next week. Things get better.
Katie Nolan
Nice. Yeah, things get better. So you're not mad or you're mad?
Maddy Kelly
I'm not mad.
Katie Nolan
Not mad.
Maddy Kelly
Okay.
Katie Nolan
This one we just talked about. But I'll ask you again. Clippers forward Kawhi Leonard is under investigation for allegedly signing a no show marketing deal with a company called Aspiration that allowed him to pocket up to an additional $48 million for doing absolutely nothing and circumventing the salary. Now, there are reports there may have been a second no show marketing deal and his trade to the Raptors is on hold until the 11 month investigation wraps up. Are you Maddie or are you not Maddie about it?
Maddy Kelly
I'm not. I'm. I. I think that they. I'm not Maddie. I think they should have actually done a little. Just a little bit of promoting of something.
Katie Nolan
Right.
Maddy Kelly
How much harder to do?
Katie Nolan
Hashtag add a picture of you.
Maddy Kelly
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
With a tree. Come on. Yeah. They just, like, didn't even fake it.
Maddy Kelly
Right? But I like to keep him on the Clippers. I think he's. I think he's great.
Katie Nolan
And so actually, maybe you should say your. Well, I guess if they stop the trade from going through, they're not gonna go and you can keep playing. I bet there would probably still be other repercussions. So she would be Maddie. She will be Maddie. If they let you. Not if they. If they make him stop playing.
Maddy Kelly
Exactly.
Katie Nolan
Okay, great. I'm glad we got there. The World Cup Final halftime show. The halftime of an international soccer game, by rule, is supposed to last no longer than 15 minutes. That's all it's supposed to be. But now FIFA is going to stretch that to 20 minutes so that they can spend 11 minutes actually performing. Because, you know, they have to bring out the stage and everything and set it up like they do at the super bowl. So now, 11 minutes of musical performance. Do you know who the headliners are?
Maddy Kelly
No.
Katie Nolan
Shakira.
Maddy Kelly
Cool.
Katie Nolan
Madonna.
Maddy Kelly
Amazing.
Katie Nolan
Bts.
Maddy Kelly
Okay, let's go.
Katie Nolan
Justin Bieber.
Maddy Kelly
Whoa.
Katie Nolan
Burna boy.
Chris (Master Editor)
Who?
Katie Nolan
The new. He's. You'll know. You know him. The New York Philharmonic.
Maddy Kelly
What?
Katie Nolan
And the Simone Bolivar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela. And the PS22 choir.
Maddy Kelly
Okay, give these people whatever they need.
Katie Nolan
11 minutes.
Maddy Kelly
They're cooking.
Katie Nolan
11 minutes.
Maddy Kelly
Yeah. I don't care.
Katie Nolan
We won't hear from any of them. Unless they're all playing one song, we won't.
Brady
What?
Katie Nolan
11 minutes.
Maddy Kelly
Whatever they gotta do, they can have.
Katie Nolan
Okay, so you're not mad. You're not mad about this at all. You love this.
Maddy Kelly
You can cut it off. Your arbitrary time you put on at the end.
Chris (Master Editor)
Damn.
Katie Nolan
Shots fired. She's not Maddie at all. She's Maddie at you. If you're mad. She wants that to be awesome. Okay, here's one. A Cubs reporter, Bruce Levine, he posted on Twitter something he meant to text.
Maddy Kelly
Oh, no.
Katie Nolan
He clearly meant to send this as a text message, but instead it went out for the world to see. This was on Monday. He said, you and the other coaches so we can. He was talking to a coach. And he again covers the Cubs, so that's who he was probably talking to. You and the other coaches have been the stars of the team being 12 games over.500. Let's hope twinkle D and Twinkle Dumb don't sell you guys out. Like the 2025. Enjoy the family time, pal. Send. Probably. We think Twinkle D and Twinkle Dumb are like ownership of the team.
Brady
Right?
Katie Nolan
That he works for. And so people are like, this is not professional of a reporter. Are you Maddie about it? Are you Maddie at him?
Maddy Kelly
I think I'm Maddie at him. I mean, come on, guy. Like, learn to use your phone.
Katie Nolan
Truly, it's. How are we even still doing this? By accident.
Chris
I.
Katie Nolan
Back in the day when Twitter first started, young lady, you could tweet from your phone not because you had an app. Because I had a BlackBerry. They didn't have apps like that. You would text a phone number, and that phone number would just be how you tweeted. And so you could just send a text and it would get posted as if you tweeted it.
Maddy Kelly
So you think he's still rocking with that?
Katie Nolan
I don't think he could be. I don't think that's even possible anymore. But it made me go, are we still able to do that?
Maddy Kelly
Yeah. In the year of my Lord X. I know.
Katie Nolan
By the way, it's called X. I'm sorry. You're so right. You're so right.
Maddy Kelly
Yeah, you gotta tighten up.
Katie Nolan
You gotta tighten up.
Maddy Kelly
Mm.
Katie Nolan
But at the same time.
Maddy Kelly
But I liked Tweedledee and Tweedledum. That's where I'm.
Katie Nolan
I'm mad because it's. It's Tweedledee and Tweedledum.
Maddy Kelly
What did he say?
Katie Nolan
Not twinkledee. Twinkledee and Twinkle Dumb.
Maddy Kelly
Twinkle D is awesome. It's.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, we'll take it. And then. Okay, here's one. This one's really dramatic and no one knows anything about it. Cause it's like a niche sport. We are in the midst of an Australian women's cricket cheating scandal.
Maddy Kelly
Oh my God.
Katie Nolan
Romantic cheating, not game cheating. Okay. Vice captain of the Australian women's cricket team. Her name is Ashley, Ashley Gardner. She's making headlines because of her marital problems with her wife, Monica Wright. So Ashley and Monica were married before they were married in 2025, Ashley was in a long term relationship with Monica, whose relationship caught media attention through social media posts where Monica was deeply ingrained in the with the Australian team and players. But now it has been revealed their marriage has ended in less than a year. The two had been together for five years before getting married in April of 2025. And then after initial reports came out, Monica was like, these are too vague for me. So she went on social media onto Instagram where her account is little bit of Monica. Shout out, shout out mambo number five. And publicly alleged that her, now her wife, her ex, the woman that was cheating on her, and said, this is who my wife cheated on me with. And posted a non flattering photo.
Maddy Kelly
Oh no.
Katie Nolan
Of her Australian teammate, Georgia Voll. The Instagram post went viral. It got a lot of attention. Are you mad or are you not mad with the way that this was handled?
Maddy Kelly
I'm pissed.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, I knew. I could feel that. I could feel that.
Maddy Kelly
I think priorities are important here. You know, it's like, what kind of life do you want to live? It sucks. It sucks. Don't cheat. Don't cheat. I'm mad at you for cheating.
Katie Nolan
Right.
Maddy Kelly
And frankly, I'm sort of mad that I have to hear about this. I think I'm like, I don't know if this is any of my business.
Katie Nolan
I know, but it has to be because once those tweets hit the timeline, once you see them, she's getting messy online. I was like, we gotta know.
Maddy Kelly
I wonder if it felt good to post.
Katie Nolan
It had to because, you know, it didn't feel good. Waking up the next day and remembering you had posted. It's like sort of like a hey,
Maddy Kelly
this is who my wife cheated with.
Katie Nolan
Hey. By the way, they're not being specific enough for me. She cheated and it was with a coat. And then clearly I think where I'm Maddie at her is that it's like, well, let's not attack the other woman for her looks. You know, if you don't think. It's not like if you're not gonna
Maddy Kelly
post a hot picture of the woman that.
Katie Nolan
But it's not like if that chance that your wife cheated with was hot, you would go, well, I get it. It's not like you would look at it and go, that person's hotter than me. It wouldn't. It would still hurt. It would still be bad. It would still feel bad. And so this was a little bit. I guess if you're gonna lashing out.
Maddy Kelly
Right. I mean, it's an ugliness that has come out for sure. But you know, in defense, you are trying to get revenge. Some people want revenge.
Katie Nolan
I know.
Maddy Kelly
On people that have wronged them. And some people suffering in silence does not make them feel good.
Katie Nolan
Right, right.
Maddy Kelly
They want the integrity of just being like, hey, if I'm a little weird lately, it's because this is going on, this is happening to me.
Katie Nolan
I'm going through this.
Maddy Kelly
And I feel that way sometimes.
Katie Nolan
You do? What time specifically would you say you feel that way?
Maddy Kelly
I think just like, you know, you go through a breakup and like everyone maybe is like posting about how like awesome they are, they're doing really well and you're like, well, they actually cause a lot of hurt, you know, and you just want other people to know that. Yeah, I've never fed into that impulse.
Katie Nolan
Oh, that's kind of hoping you were leading towards. No, we had this conversation, you know, Rosebud Baker, we were talking to her last week about times when you just are like, ah, screw it, I'm gonna light everything on fire. And I realized I don't think I've ever done that. That and that made me sad as a woman. Cuz I think sometimes you should just have moments where you go decorum. I'm just going to let everybody know. Have you had any of those yet? You're young. You don't even have any resentment yet, do you?
Maddy Kelly
I'm 30.
Katie Nolan
It's young.
Maddy Kelly
How old are you?
Katie Nolan
39.
Maddy Kelly
Okay. That we're in the same decade.
Katie Nolan
No, but close to not. You know, we would not have been in the same school at the same time at any point.
Maddy Kelly
Right.
Katie Nolan
So
Maddy Kelly
yeah, I have definitely said when someone did something bad, but it was of a criminal nature. Oh, well, that's like that stick. It wasn't really revenge. Y. It was just sort of like. But I even waited on that for a long time, to be honest.
Katie Nolan
Damn. Why? I don't know.
Maddy Kelly
I just didn't really want to be part of the story anymore. I just. I didn't want the adjacency. I didn't want anyone to even. I was just like, oh, this is over.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Maddy Kelly
I'm getting away from this forever.
Katie Nolan
And that's sort of just almost like a closure more than like a Denzel Washington light it on fire while you coolly walk away.
Maddy Kelly
That's more.
Katie Nolan
That's what I was channeling.
Maddy Kelly
I have a terribly toxic belief, which is I go, if you cheat on me, just don't.
Katie Nolan
Just tell me.
Chris
Whoa.
Maddy Kelly
I really don't want to know. Either Break up with me.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Maddy Kelly
Or just never do it again and make sure I never find out.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. I don't really want to know. You know, I think I would have a hard time saying that sentence because it doesn't feel innately true to me. But I think I would agree with you if I. When I ever found out after the fact. Or how about this?
Maddy Kelly
Cheat on me.
Katie Nolan
We'll wait.
Maddy Kelly
We'll wait.
Katie Nolan
Don't clip it there. She's got. She's saying more.
Maddy Kelly
Cheat on me.
Katie Nolan
So, Maddy Kelly, thank you so much.
Maddy Kelly
Cheat on me. Me. Realize you don't want to be with me, right? In your actions or you want to sleep with other people? Not me.
Katie Nolan
Just break up with me.
Maddy Kelly
But don't tell me you cheated. Just break up with me.
Katie Nolan
You don't even want to know on the way out, huh?
Maddy Kelly
I really don't want to have the image. I really don't want to have the image.
Katie Nolan
The image would help me in the getting interesting process. If you're leaving. If you just go like, well, one day I woke up and didn't. I'd go, what do you mean? I'm so lovable. Something must have happened. I need to know what happened so it won't happen to me again in the future. Future. Whereas if they go like, I cheated on you, I go, oh, this is a you problem. This has nothing to do with me.
Maddy Kelly
Bye.
Katie Nolan
Bye. And now, of course, that's me. That's a dramatic representation. I don't think it would be like that. I would still be broken. But I think I'd want to know. Just tell me. Also, I get the fuel.
Maddy Kelly
The fuel to get you further away from them.
Katie Nolan
Also, I think you're. You're closing the gap on the cheating and the you don't want to be with me anymore. I think a lot of people don't think those two are as directly related as a logical thinking person would, which is, you cheated on me, so clearly you don't want to be with me. So then just break up with me. With me. And I think a lot of people like to do the cheating and Then go. No, of course I want to be with you. That's why I snuck around to do that. Because I still would like to be with you. I just don't want you to know that I had sex with your friend. You know, that's what the cheating is. So you don't want to know at all?
Maddy Kelly
No.
Katie Nolan
This is sports podcast. I don't know why I'm doing.
Maddy Kelly
Definitely not. If it's not my. If it's my friend. My God.
Katie Nolan
You just want to stay friends with her. And hanging out with him.
Maddy Kelly
Low key.
Brady
Yeah.
Maddy Kelly
Wow.
Katie Nolan
What a tectonic shift in mindset.
Maddy Kelly
I love everyone in my life. I don't wanna lose them.
Katie Nolan
Guys, don't disturb this by telling me any of it.
Maddy Kelly
No, continue.
Katie Nolan
About your dalliances. Leave me out of it. I wanna stay your girlfriend and your friend.
Maddy Kelly
I want everything to stay the same, even if it's a lot.
Katie Nolan
You fascinate me.
Maddy Kelly
Yeah. I'm weird, huh?
Katie Nolan
All right. What sport you think you're gonna get into the most this year?
Maddy Kelly
Oh, what a good question. Well, I think now that I've had this whole. Because I was watching the playoffs, like from the start.
Katie Nolan
Basketball, we're saying.
Maddy Kelly
Yeah.
Chris
Yeah.
Maddy Kelly
And I think that I'll just be more. I'll be more like paying attention through the year.
Katie Nolan
Nice.
Maddy Kelly
Seeing what's up.
Katie Nolan
You got time till that starts? Until then, baseball.
Maddy Kelly
Yeah. Okay. Yeah.
Katie Nolan
Okay.
Maddy Kelly
I'm going to the Dodgers game.
Katie Nolan
Great. When?
Maddy Kelly
September.
Katie Nolan
Exciting.
Maddy Kelly
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
You get to throw out the first pitch.
Maddy Kelly
That would be awesome. If anyone's interested in that for me to do. I actually have a pretty good arm, as you know. My father didn't raise me as a woman, so that was a big part of the mechanics of throwing was really important to him. And I also would like to sit courtside, really? At anything.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. This is the time to make your pitch. This is the time to make your voice note. Elevator pitch.
Maddy Kelly
Bang.
Katie Nolan
My line to have you. What would be your approach for throwing out that first pitch? Are you throwing it from the mound? They, as a courtesy, allow you to go in front of the mound.
Maddy Kelly
No, I would be practicing.
Katie Nolan
That's right. Not nice.
Maddy Kelly
And I would do it properly.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. What are you gonna wear nicely?
Maddy Kelly
Booty shorts.
Katie Nolan
Nice. I was.
Chris
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
I meant, like, are you gonna wear a jersey? You're gonna wear a hat or.
Maddy Kelly
But the.
Katie Nolan
But booty shorts is a good. That says Dodgers across the ass.
Maddy Kelly
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
That'll get the numbers.
Maddy Kelly
All American. Perfect.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. Pigtails, for sure. Why not eat a hot dog right before you do it one in Rome. Yeah, totally. Well, Maddie Kelly, I hope that for you. And if you guys want to go see her on tour, don't forget that you can do that. Go to mattykelly.net, i believe.
Maddy Kelly
Oh, yeah?
Katie Nolan
And what's that about?
Maddy Kelly
Well, I had comm for years. I was the owner of comm. And then I lost it, and it went into a sort of strange purgatory administratively. And then I like net because it implies to me that there might be something else on the website. Maybe there's a game on there. You know what I mean? It's like, not just for tour dates. It's like MySpace online.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. Maybe it'll have one of those MIDI players that sing when I get there and ranks all of her friends in order.
Maddy Kelly
Something like that.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. That's nice.
Maddy Kelly
Maybe it's easier to remember.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. Maddiekelly.net and just in case anybody, this is your first time interacting with Maddy. It's M, A, D, D, Y. A lot of different ways to spell Maddy.
Maddy Kelly
Right?
Katie Nolan
Short for Madison.
Maddy Kelly
Madeline.
Katie Nolan
Madeline. There was a very popular Children. Did you read Madeline when you were little? It's just funny because every little girl I feel like reads about Madeline and is like. Like, I wish I were Madeline.
Maddy Kelly
She was so cool. She got her appendix out.
Katie Nolan
Yes.
Maddy Kelly
She's amazing.
Katie Nolan
I know. And then you're like real life her. Aw, isn't that sweet? Okay, so, Maddy Kelly. Anyway. Maddie Kelly.net. sorry for saying nice things to you. July 17th and 18th in Washington, D.C. our nation's capital. Really popping off right now. And then July 23, Montreal. July 27, Toronto. And then August 7, in a. She'll be in Houston, Texas. Maddie, thank you for coming. Tell your boyfriend we said hi.
Maddy Kelly
I will.
Katie Nolan
And. And his dog. Tell the family dog, George, that we said hi. And sorry about the World Series, because from George's perspective, what you guys did to him was pretty up.
Maddy Kelly
We're giving him a Xanax for the next time.
Katie Nolan
Smart.
Maddy Kelly
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
The next time they're in the World Series, it'll probably be this.
Maddy Kelly
Yeah, probably this year.
Katie Nolan
And then they're gonna be responsible for baseball being canceled next year. So thanks for that.
Maddy Kelly
Sorry.
Katie Nolan
Thanks.
Maddy Kelly
Thanks for teaching me about salary caps.
Katie Nolan
I don't think I. I don't think I did.
Maddy Kelly
But you did.
Katie Nolan
I did.
Maddy Kelly
Yep.
Katie Nolan

Chris
Okay.
Katie Nolan
Welcome back. Thank you again to Maddy Kelly. She was great.
Chris (Master Editor)
Great.
Katie Nolan
She was great. And for the audio listener, she wore Capris. Now, if the women who listen to the show may know that they're trying to make Capris happen again, and I have stood in opposition to that, I've been very like, I'm not gonna do that. And I thought, they've looked dumb on most people. And then in comes Maddie Kelly, and she looked adorable in Capris. And now I'm like, are they back? Are we gonna.
Chris
They are back.
Katie Nolan
I know. I just.
Maddy Kelly
Just.
Katie Nolan
I'm conflicted. And that's my only note on her. Otherwise. Thumbs up. Two thumbs up for a guest. How dare she throw me into such an existential. Let's get to our. Our inboxes. Let's open up our boxes, huh? Talk to me. Who have we heard from this week? This is the part of the show where we like to hear from you guys. Your correspondence, Chris. I hear we have an email from Sarah to start with.
Chris (Master Editor)
We do. Sarahson says hi. Casualties crew. You may have seen the recent announcement that the Winter Olympics will introduce synchronized ice skating as a new competition. This is awesome. However, there's a caveat. This will only include nine skaters instead of the traditional 16. The given reason for this is for faster action to make it more palatable for new viewers. I find the rationale to be pretty weak overall, given how dominant figure skating was at the last Olympics. Alyssa Liu proved it does not need to be simplified for viewership. Additionally, less people on the ice inherently limits the type of action that can occur. For example, less simultaneous lifts. Yeah, I'd love to know what the casual crew thinks of this. My wife is a former competitive synchro skater, so we're fired up about this. Love you mean it.
Katie Nolan
Love you mean it. Thank you for your email. I gotta be honest, and I'm shocked by this. I've never heard of it. I. There very rarely. I mean, I've heard of ski dancing as an Olympic sport, so, like, I've heard of some pretty obscure. I didn't know we were doing synchronized skating like that. This. And to hear that they're bringing it in is great. But to cut it from 16 to 9, that's not a small cut. That's basically considerable. Yeah, that's seven of the. Of the Possible people out there not being out there anymore. And now. So this is just team figure skating? Yes, yes.
Chris
I kind of like this idea of like, of limiting the amount of people.
Katie Nolan
Now tell me why.
Chris
I don't know. I think just considering like the sizing of like the rank, like, I feel like you may, they may be able to like utilize more, more space and, and kind of be more creative maybe in some of the, the moves they do.
Katie Nolan
And I get that and I hear you, but I also then go, are they going to change these teams that have been teams for a long time to find out they're finally going to be an Olympic sport and then go, we gotta cut seven of you and change our whole routine to fill the space more is sort of like a tough ask.
Chris
Yeah, true.
Brady
You know, now with 90 seconds of watching this in my life. Yeah, I will, I will. I will have.
Katie Nolan
Please give us your informed opinion.
Brady
I think they need all 16 because I think the coolest aspect of this, it's like watching the college marching band where you see like them making the whole word Ohio and then somebody's, you know, they're dotting the eye and all the shapes that this amount of people moving in unison does. That's the coolest part of it.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Brady
That's half seeing them.
Katie Nolan
The interest.
Isabella
Yeah.
Brady
Now it's like nine of them. Like you're. I don't know if you're really making a whole dinosaur out there.
Katie Nolan
Also. Nine is. Nine is also uneven. Was it uneven?
Chris
Yeah, that was it before 16.
Brady
I mean, it's a square of three versus square of four.
Katie Nolan
What?
Chris
Okay, sure, whatever Dorky thinks.
Katie Nolan
I'm just thinking in terms of like lifts happening at the same time. You're always going to have one person who's like alone standing there. Right. And so probably doing something. Oh, bendy and impressive. But. But not. But that. I don't know. I. I think this is going to be cool. I'll definitely watch it. I there.
Maddy Kelly
I don't.
Katie Nolan
I'm not snooty about sports during the Olympics. Show me your weirdest bring out horses dancing. I need to see it. I want to see it. I'm never gonna go, what the hell is this?
Brady
It's dressage.
Katie Nolan
Excuse me, sorry, horse.
Chris (Master Editor)
I wonder if this could be like a trial period for skating so then once they prove that there's enough viewership, enough interest in synchronized skating, then they can expand that from.
Katie Nolan
Okay, but listen, let me say you should, as an Australian, you should maybe not speak up on this because it, it may be One of your own who took a trial period and ruined it for everybody. Because breakdancing wasn't a trial period and
Chris (Master Editor)
should never been an Olympic.
Katie Nolan
I don't think we're going to be hearing from break dance. So things can go wrong during your trial. Showing that, then make everybody go, we don't want this. And so I would say that they, they should at least during the trial go, this is what it is. And then maybe people go, whoa, that's too many guys. That's too many gals. And then cut back. Is it. Is it. What's the word? I'm trying to think of both sexes. Is it both?
Chris (Master Editor)
It's. It's single gender for now. So I think that the plan for 2030 is to have it as just a female competition and then there would be room for it to grow into competition.
Katie Nolan
Because in the Olympics, they just cut the one that was men's only, which was Nordic combined. No more Nordic combined in the Olympics. I saw that headline came across my desk because, like I said, I keep my finger on an Olympic pulse. So interesting. I'm excited to see it. And actually, if Sarah and her wife are, like, upset about it, then I'm upset on their behalf. But as a casual who hasn't seen it before, I'm definitely interested to take a look at it.
Chris (Master Editor)
It's raising awareness for the sport for sure.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, let's all be sure to get that on the calendar. Where are the next Olympics? I want to say they're in the Alps.
Chris (Master Editor)
They are, yeah.
Katie Nolan
Which where in the Alps do we know?
Chris (Master Editor)
All over.
Katie Nolan
Okay.
Chris (Master Editor)
Several of the Alps just says French Alps.
Katie Nolan
French. That's what I meant. Because there's the Swiss Alps, there's the, I believe the Italian Alps. Don't let me go down mountains.
Brady
Where's your favorite Alp?
Katie Nolan
Alp? The alien from the show. Alp. His full name was Alpine, but they didn't have time. Okay, let's go to an email from Nico.
Chris (Master Editor)
Nico says, hi, Katie and the Casualties. Hi, my name is Nico and I currently live in Orlando, Florida. I have an idea for Chris's San Jose PWHL team name the Orcas. They are a fierce apex predator like sharks. They could be something that can be in a tank, but probably shouldn't be like sharks. And on a funnish note, they bully and hunt great white sharks for fun and for their living. Whoa. I've had this idea for a while, but haven't had anyone to share it with that would care. So thank you for being those people.
Katie Nolan
Okay. Thank you for being the people that you are. While I google bad facts about orcas just to make sure, I just gotta check if orcas have any old tweets. An orca is a whale, a killer whale. So clearly they are dangerous, you know, but. But we put dangerous animals on our. It's. We don't look into have they killed. We don't actually care about that. We care more about like our orcas. Like rapists, I think is what I'm looking up. You guys can look up whatever you want.
Chris (Master Editor)
We don't want the Tasmanian devils spin up out of this.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. Or dolphins, oddly enough. So Miami's really got a lot to answer for down there.
Brady
I. I've been on earth for a while now and I. I know how people act and I don't think we want a team of women being called the whales.
Katie Nolan
Oh, I didn't even go there. And I don't know that others would somebody. The fact that you brought it up. This is something I've wanted to know for a while. If somebody brings up something like that of like. Oh, I just know someone's gonna say, is it not the same as just being the guy who said it?
Brady
It's not like walking. It's not like walking up to someone cold and be like, I didn't poop on the floor.
Chris (Master Editor)
Yeah.
Brady
Like it's. I'm. There's a reason that this is being discussed and I. Someone will use this. This for evil means. And I don't think we should set that up that way.
Katie Nolan
All right. They. Here's a fun fact I just learned because orcas are at the very top of the food chain. They absorb all the pollution consumed by the animals they eat. They accumulate high levels of toxic chemicals in their blubber which can make them very sick. They're like toxic garbage cans of the sea is what it said here. And I was like, whoa. I wouldn't call it that that. Brady would.
Brady
I wouldn't. People might. I don't want to name a team of women. The toxic garbage can.
Katie Nolan
I like orcas. I like orcas. And cuz I was a big. Listen. Free Willy was made for me. Oh yeah, Free Willy was made for me. That kid was my f. One of my first boyfriends. He was a. A rebel. And I was a kid that went, oh my God, he's so bad. And that whale's his best friend and I need to know him. And so I love. Why'd you just tilt your head? Cause you googled what he looked like. Isabella, he's a child. I was a child, too.
Chris
No, no, no. I was thinking about what I think they should be.
Katie Nolan
Oh, okay. What do you think?
Chris
Try narwhals. All right. And I say that because that's what my college mascot was, and it was very different.
Katie Nolan
Your college mascot was the giant narwhal?
Chris
We were narwhals. Yeah. And his name was Gnarls.
Katie Nolan
Gnarls in charge. Gnarlls Barkley. A lot of. A lot of. A lot of branding stuff can happen here. But aren't they technically, like, Arctic sharks?
Isabella
So.
Katie Nolan
Okay, sorry. I'm very sorry.
Brady
They're mammals.
Katie Nolan
They're mammals, so it's fine. Okay, so I think orcas is good, but maybe not. Maybe other people don't like it. Have we starfish? Oh, cute.
Chris
Sorry, I got so excited about it.
Katie Nolan
What about, like, the Mighty Ducks? We go with the Nemos, and then we do the Disney partnership for a couple years, and then we eventually break off and go, like. I don't think we needed any of that.
Chris (Master Editor)
Oh, the dories.
Katie Nolan
Or the dories.
Chris
Starfish is really cute. The starfish.
Katie Nolan
You think?
Chris
Yeah, that's really cute.
Katie Nolan
Because there's no fucking S. He hates.
Chris (Master Editor)
He hates.
Brady
I mean, it's like, reason number one, it means butthole. Reason number two, there's no S on the end. Reason number three, it's because starfish, like, have no brain and don't actually move. And it's not, like, something that you would want to name a sports team after.
Katie Nolan
This guy called you stupid. A stupid butthole. I missed the second fact because I didn't know starfishes were butthole.
Brady
There's an entire Limp Bizkit album about it.
Katie Nolan
That's what the chocolate chocolate starfish. Starfish is a butthole. A starfish itself. I don't think so.
Chris (Master Editor)
It's a clean butthole.
Katie Nolan
A clean butthole. Okay, can we move on? Let's go to. Sorry, Nico, but sorry.
Maddy Kelly
Let's.
Katie Nolan
Can we finish on an email while we're under the sea? Can we go to an email from Steph, please?
Chris (Master Editor)
Sure. Steph says hi, Katie, Chris, Bubba, Brady, and of course, Isabella. Of course. I saw the MLB tweet that spongebob threw out the first pitch at Oracle park this weekend, and I noticed that he clearly stole Isabella's signature cyclone pitch and rebranded it as the Loop de Loop and Pool.
Katie Nolan
Oh, creative.
Chris (Master Editor)
Isabella had a comment. Or if she had sent him a cease and desist.
Katie Nolan
Whoa, you just got hit with your first. Isabella, care to comment?
Chris
Yeah, and that's fucking insane. You know what? I'm glad I didn't watch your fucking show as a kid, bro.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, I didn't either.
Chris
Oh, nice. Goody.
Chris (Master Editor)
Here.
Katie Nolan
Watched spongebob.
Chris
I watched, like, parts of it, but I wasn't like. When people constantly always, like, have references and stuff, I'm like, I don't.
Katie Nolan
It either got you as a kid or it got you as a stoner. And it missed me in both of those windows. It just. I never got it.
Chris (Master Editor)
So I think I was slightly too old for it, too.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Brady
I moved my kids away from it because they tried it, and I was like, these guys just treat each other like I don't want them.
Chris
I remember when I was a kid, my mom was like, that's show is dumb. And I. My kid brain was like, my mom thinks it's dumb, so I'm not gonna watch it.
Katie Nolan
See, if my mom said something was dumb, it became my favorite thing. Like this. Like, the Simpsons now is about, what
Chris (Master Editor)
are you up to on that, by the way? You still. You still making your watch?
Katie Nolan
Well, we've been watching a lot of, like, World cup, and. And so it's. We're still. We're going slow. It's going slow, but I'll let. I'll keep you guys in the loop. Sweet Isabella. Not the loop de loop. Not the loop de loop. How do you feel? It clearly feels like he's aware of you because they would have just called Cyclone, and going out of his way to call it something different felt like plausible deniability that it was something different.
Chris
It's kind of crazy. Also, the loop de loop has nothing to do. Like, at least mine had a. Had a theme. Like, it made sense.
Katie Nolan
A loop de loop is this.
Chris
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
If I may. A loop de loop is a. Is like on a roller coaster when you go upside down, that's a loop de loop.
Isabella
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
Unless he flipped, that wasn't a loop de loop. He did a spin.
Chris
Yeah. Which I branded, and I thought everyone knew that.
Katie Nolan
I think this is. I think you have grounds legally to go after spongebob. If that's. If you want to sue the square pants off the guy, I say go for it.
Chris
So on site, it's Boomer Siason and then spongebob.
Katie Nolan
That's right. That's right. And is there anything Boomer can say or do to move him off the list? I'm just curious as a person who would love to put headlines in front of you about Boomer Assize and every time I see one.
Chris
H. No, he's still always going to Be there.
Katie Nolan
Fantastic. That's actually the answer I was hoping for, but I will still try you every time I see a boomer headline. All right, y'. All. That feels like it. Do you think that's it?
Chris (Master Editor)
I think we good.
Katie Nolan
I think that's it. So let's. Let's call it. Hey, enjoy the World cup watch party. Get out in the street and I'll say this here. And you'll be hearing me say this for months and months to come. We're keeping the same energy in one year. Next summer for the Women's World Cup. It's not here. It's in Brazil. But that's similar time zone. It's right underneath America. That's how we're all always underneath North America. It is America. It's South America. Okay? So keep this same energy. You will have more excuses to go outside and bump into people and find community with your fellow man, woman, human being, anybody, dogs. Because the World cup for the women and actually the United States might have a chance to win the whole thing. So it's kind of even more exciting for us. And there's less diving. So just already put that in your calendar and mentally make space because I don't want to fucking hear it. Okay, great. Awesome. So thanks to you guys for listening and to the casualties for being here and to Maddy Kelly for coming by, and we'll see you next week. Enjoy the final and we'll talk probably about a lot of baseball coming up soon. Soon. We'll see you next week. Bye. This episode has been presented by Xfinity.
