when we got told to call it football, we would say, well, our national team is the Socceroos. So if our national team is called the Socceroos, then we can call it soccer.

And I keep hearing and not looking any further into that. Soccer originated in England. The word soccer came from England. And so the fact that for association

football is short for association.

Right. And the way that they're the loudest about telling us to stop, it makes me go, thou doth protest too much. So maybe leave me alone, please. We have a fantastic guest coming up, Maddy Kelly, someone who I've just algorithmically bumped into a lot. She's very funn. Uh, you may have seen her on the Tonight Show. She just did that recently. 2023. She was a new face. She got new faces at Just for Laughs, which is a big comedy festival in Canada. She's from Canada, but rooted for the Dodgers in the World Series, which I. I know Canada is a big place. I know it's not all Toronto, but Toronto is the only Canadian team we have. The Montreal Expos are gone. There were others. Or that's.

That was it.

Yeah. And so now it's just down to that one. And so that World Series was really Canada v. America, in a way. We had a lot of. She rooted for the Dodgers, so you better believe we talk about that and a bunch of other stuff that's coming up in a little bit. But first, we have a couple things I want to talk about. Number one, we. Since we last saw you, the completion of MLB, All Star festivities. We obviously saw Mr. And Mrs. Met on the red carpet, and I had to get Isabella's thoughts on that. But also, we had, of course, as it would be because we are cursed. We had an incredible Home Run Derby that we couldn't talk about. And then the All Star Game that we can talk about. Kind of a snooze fest. Can I say that? Did you like it, Brady?

[Brady]

The pitchers, it's. If you love strikeouts, there were 27 of them.

[Katie Nolan]

And I do love strikeouts, but not in my All Star Game. I want.

[Brady]

It's not why I showed up.

[Katie Nolan]

I want the bat swinging. I want the ball moving. I want to see Ernie Clement, which I did see, make an incredible play up the middle. I like watching baseball.

[Brady]

I know. Isn't that crazy?

Flipping Game seven of the World Series?

[Katie Nolan]

Exactly. And so that part, I guess, I did like. But can we start, please, by talking about the Home Run Derby? I know it's kind of old by now, but Jordan Walker from the Cardinals. What an electric night that was. The Home Run Derby changed its format again. They do this a lot. Every couple years. We go back and forth. And the issue I think most people had with the timer in the old Home Run Derby was not that too many home runs were being hit. It was that the camera could not find the home runs. And so for the viewer, you'd be looking to see if one of the balls was out or not, and the batter would already be swinging on the next pitch. And so you kind of felt like you were behind the action. It was just a broadcast issue. Instead of solving that, they said, let's go back to. You get swings, we'll give you pitches, and you get a certain number of swings. 20 swings in that is it. 20 swings all rounds.

[Brady]

They did 20 and then 15.

[Katie Nolan]

15, right. And so it was like, you get to swing, and if you hit the ball and it doesn't go out, that costs a swing. If you hit the ball and it does go out, that costs a swing. Unless it's the last pitch, in which case you cannot. You can just hit a home run till you stop on that last pitch. So the first few rounds, I was like, it took a second. It sort of started with a lot of home runs. And then as the rounds went on, I thought they set it up in a way that sucked. Where Bryce Harper came up last after Kyle Schwaber and those guys both play for the Phillies. And this was in Philadelphia. And so they, like, made it so that only one of it worked out, so that by the time Bryce Harper was going, he was either going to knock Kyle Schwaber out of contention or he was going to get knocked out himself. And so it was like, that was a little bit of an annoyance. But then we got to the last round, and I had no notes. I was like, this is exactly what I wanted and exactly what I deserved. It comes down to Kyle Schwarber, hometown hero, who hits first and hits 11 home runs. And then Jordan Walker, a guy who makes $799,000 a year, which is, of course, a lot of money to a regular person. But in. In the scheme of baseball, that's not a lot of money. And the prize money for winning the Home Run Derby is more than that. It's a million dollars. So it was like a real guy who everyone is rooting for in the house versus guy who, like, we saw his parents. God, his parents were like, my favorite part of this broadcast. We saw his parents and his family rooting for him. But the entire place, they booed. Everybody shout out to Philly Phillies fans, know I love him and I understand them. I also know they get a bad rap and that people feel however they feel. They're very passionate. And they booed every single person that wasn't on the Phillies during that Home Run Derby. So it comes down to these two. Walker gets down to. He's got Brady. Where does it. Where did it get to when he had to just hit them in a row?

[Brady]

He was with three swings to go. He was. It was 11 to 6.

[Katie Nolan]

So he still needed five to tie, six to win. And he only had three swings left. And then he hit six home runs in a row.

[Chris]

No biggie.

[Katie Nolan]

Six home runs. Back to back to back to watch. I mean, Kyle Schwaber, for one. At first he was going like, keep going, dude. And then at one point, you saw him go like, gulp. Okay, you can stop at any moment. And the fans were like, there's no way. There's just no way. The entire crowd, you guys, is booing him loudly, violently. And he cool, calm and collected. Jordan Walker, learn his name. Because what a fucking dude. Stood there and hit six consecutive home runs and beat Kyle Schwerber in Kyle Schwaber's house.

[Chris]

Fun. I like it.

[Katie Nolan]

Unreal.

Fantastic. Give me 14 of them right away. It was awesome. I absolutely loved it. Electric Night saved the Home Run Derby. Unfortunately, it was. And I've said this on the Radio. I do eventually want to get back into tv, so I'm not going to say too much bad about Netflix, and it's not bad. These are just notes. Netflix had the Home Run Derby, and even though the format was fixed and we were not timing swings, so there was a lot of space between the pitches guys would swing at, theoretically, we still weren't going to the right camera angles at the right time. Is that fair to say?

[Brady]

They're learning. They're learning. It's their first year with baseball. Baseball's hard. I'll give them a little.

[Katie Nolan]

Sure.

A little credit because this is definitely an improvement.

Nobody gave me wiggle room, so I'll just say I'm giving it to you.

[Brady]

It was better than their opening day broadcast where cameras were all over the place and throws were all over and their audio levels were up and down. This was. This is better.

[Chris]

Don't you do, like, a practice run, though? Like, let's do a fake game as

[Katie Nolan]

much as you can. So when Apple TV got into baseball, they just took MLB Network people and people who knew how to do it and just paid them to do it. So it was like it was Apple doing it, but it was MLB Network. I assumed that sort of same thing would have happened at Netflix, but I guess not. So, yeah, we'll let them. They'll figure it out.

[Chris]

I won't let them figure it out.

[Katie Nolan]

That's right. That's right. She needs it now.

[Brady]

I did like their little set with Elle Duncan just kind of in a little lounge off to the side when they were. Weren't doing play by play. They're like, let's just throw to Elle. She's just sitting here on three couches interviewing Barry Bonds about whatever. Yeah, it's a nice little change of energy.

[Katie Nolan]

And I liked Barry Bonds asking his family, asking Jordan Walker's family afterwards what they were that they. He said to Jordan Walker, like, remember who sacrificed for you? Your parents sacrificed a lot for you. And then he, like, turned and he said, so, mom, dad, what are you gonna do with the money? What's the first thing you're gonna make him buy for you? And I was like, I love that. I think that's fantastic. It was. His family was electric. They were so proud of him, his little grandma. I was telling Isabella yesterday that his grandma, like, wandered into that shot where they were on all the couches, and she's just in the background of the shot, unaware as she shouldn't be. Let her live her life. But she's talking to someone off camera. And insisting, like, come here. And I bet the person off camera was going, no. And also you come here. You're in the live shot. I thought it was gorgeous. They were so. They were so proud of him. His parents were so proud of him. And it was just so sweet. And then the. The All Star Game. The All Star Game was like, all right, well, we did it. You know, it was a little bit anti climactic given how big of a night they had the night before. But the American League won. And so cool. I guess it doesn't mean anything anymore. Brady, I feel like you were the target audience for this sandlot thing that happened. I was paying. I'm sorry. To the All Star Game. I'm busy. I was paying half attention and I must have missed whatever the tee up for. And now it's time for the part where we do this. You know, the. And now it's time for stand up to cancer and they'll put on a little. They had boys to men do stand up to cancer. And everybody held up the signs. I must have missed the tee up for whatever this was. I look up and there's boys riding their bikes out onto the field. And then I see someone having a catch with Freddie Freeman in the middle of the All Star Game. What was this? And you liked it?

[Brady]

I don't know. And no, it was after the fourth inning when I'm not expecting an eight minute break in the action.

What was that?

With J.K. simmons throwing to a fireworks show over America the Beautiful. I get that it was owed to America, but it went really long.

I walked out and cleaned up something in my garage and came back and it was still going. I was like. I was like, I guess I got time right now. Yeah, I guess we're not heartless.

I'm fucking joking with you. I was gonna walk. I mean it. I was out. I can't. There's only.

Yeah, it's going to be a very good game. We're very excited. And it also is the culmination of this summer of soccer. Look, we had the Knicks bring everybody together, get everybody out into the streets. And then I think we saw the same thing happen with the World Cup. I'm trying to keep this, like, sense of community going because I think people crave community. They're looking for reasons to get out of their house. And so if you are invited to a World cup watch party for the final, if you've got a friend who's having people over, if you are, if you want to be the person who's like, hey, everyone, come over. I want to arm casual fans with, like, interesting stuff to talk about with all of these people, places you can make connections. And one thing we haven't really had any time to talk about throughout this World cup is that, like, the World cup has some crazy history. Now we're going to focus on the Men's World cup in this segment in particular, because that is the final that we have coming up. And then also this saves us content for next year when we want to do this same segment with the Women's World cup, but focusing on the Men's World Cup. Throughout the history of the Men's World cup, some crazy stuff has happened. And I thought maybe it would be a good idea to tell some of these crazy stories to people who may not know them. That way, when you're, you know, at a watch party and there's a little downtime, maybe they're going to var. Maybe it's a hydration break, you can go like, hey, did you know that in 19? Now, the refs did not see it and so nothing happened, I don't think in match. But then afterwards they found out. And because he was a repeat offender, he received a nine game ban from international matches and he was banned for four months from all football related activities. So it was like, you, buddy, clearly this is why you play soccer. This is an extra. This is what you're here to do. And because of that, we cannot let you play like, sorry, any soccer.

Yeah, absolutely crazy. No card being issued is nuts. Uruguay scored right after it and they ended up winning 1 nil. They eliminated Italy from the tournament. So not great, you know, not the greatest. But Suarez issued a public apology and the two have since reconciled. So no hard feelings, no lasting impression.

I thought that was fucking crazy. And there was also one.

Same World Cup, I believe it was usa. A team doctor was running out to do something, started causing a scene about being at. Upset about a card or something that was issued while causing a scene, flipped his bag full of medical supplies, bursting open a glass vial that contained chloroform, and then passed out on the field. They had to cart him off because he got so upset. He chloroformed himself and they had to cart him off of the field. But the one that she has chosen is the World Cup. Saved by a dog named Pickles. This was the 1966.

Oh, and let's not bring that to anyone's attention. Let's not bring that to anyone's attention or Trump's gonna go. We'll call it the Trump Trophy. And please cut that. Don't let anybody get an idea. Don't tell them we said this. But anyway, the trophy was stolen March 20, 1966, while on display at a Methodist Central hall in London, just four months before the World Cup. They were displaying it. Come take a look. The World cup, boom. It's gone. Following the theft, the Football association received a 15,000 pound ransom demand. So somebody said, I'll give you back your cup if you give me £15,000, along with the removable lining from the top of the trophy. So they basically proved they had it and said, Give me £15,000 money, not of, of chocolate or something, just £15,000 and. And I'll give it back to you. Seven days later, on March 27, 1966, a four year old black and white collie dog named Pickles was out for a walk with his owner in South London. Pickles sniffed out a package wrapped in newspaper that was hidden under a neighbor's garden hedge. And inside, the owner discovered the missing World cup trophy. Pickles was instantly hailed as a national hero and was rewarded with the National Canine Defense League's silver medal.

So I had the full surgery. So I like did a full medical procedure that makes you go crazy. And they were like, you're actually gonna tape the Tonight show on Tuesday. And I was like, of course I am. Of course I am.

But it went well.

Yeah, it did. But there's a. If you watch the YouTube, after I finish my set, I go into the mic. Cause I think it was just like I'd done it and this tiny little sound came out of me.

And that's. And that's none of your business. You can't help that. It's just let me make my weird little sound. I have a lot going on up here.

I'm a woman in comedy and in crisis at the moment. Just sort of dealing with a lot.

Yeah. Chemically, I have seven new eggs I gotta worry about that are frozen at 37th and Park.

I know. And they fancy little Manhattan eggs.

Gorgeous. Stunning. Stunning. Pre war. We talk sports here, but you don't have to know a lot or care a lot. But I do want to know your background in it. So I know when you were younger, you were ranked as a tennis player.

[Maddy Kelly]

Yes.

[Katie Nolan]

So you were very good.

[Maddy Kelly]

I mean, I was kind of the bad boy of the under 12 tennis circuit in British Columbia campus.

[Katie Nolan]

Okay, tell me more.

[Maddy Kelly]

I was, like, rebellious. I didn't like it. I don't know why I was doing it. My dad wanted me to get a scholarship for sports. So he was playing the odds. So he was like, you're either gonna play golf or tennis. And my parents were separated. My dad was like, single dad, had a lot of time on his hands.

[Katie Nolan]

Dangerous.

[Maddy Kelly]

Yeah. And he also thought it was sexist to raise me as a girl, so he just.

[Katie Nolan]

Okay, dad.

[Maddy Kelly]

Yeah, I know. Kinda. I think I like that in a way. Yeah. And the big. The big joke story that we make fun of him now is that he used to make me train, like, under. Like an underpass, kinda. And there was, like, homeless people, like, hanging out down there. And, like, he'd make me do that in the snow.

[Katie Nolan]

For what? Like hitting balls against a practicing.

[Maddy Kelly]

But I don't know. I mean, it didn't. I don't think anyone's ever really gone pro for a sport they don't really like. Like, even.

[Katie Nolan]

I think you'd be surprised, but I do. It weeds out most people in the years you've got to really.

[Maddy Kelly]

Yeah.

[Katie Nolan]

Dedicate your life to it. Which tennis did that for you? Around what age? When did you start to go? This is probably not.

[Maddy Kelly]

I think as soon as I got to high school, I was just like, I really want to do a play. Isn't it the opposite?

[Katie Nolan]

And did you.

[Maddy Kelly]

Oh, yeah.

[Katie Nolan]

Good. A lot of plays.

[Maddy Kelly]

Yeah. And that was intense in its own way, you know?

[Isabella]

Yeah.

[Katie Nolan]

What was your fit? Are you. Were you, like, the lead in your place?

[Maddy Kelly]

The lead I got there, girl. I know. That's always the origin story, you know, it's like. It feels like still to this day, I'm like, well, that was the biggest thing I've ever done. How about that?

[Katie Nolan]

What was your. What was your big, like, oh, my God, we gotta go see the local high school production of something. Cause Maddie has a solo there in that second act. Which play was like the big play for you?

[Maddy Kelly]

That's such a generous question to let me talk about this because I think it's embarrassing to still care about what plays you in high school?

[Katie Nolan]

But I like it. And I know you do. You're wearing capris.

[Maddy Kelly]

I'm wearing my little capris, yeah. I was in a play called Daisy pulls it off. When I first got to my new school, I was like, new kid in school, walk in, get the lead, get Daisy. I was like 14. It was a two and a half hour play entirely in a pre war British accent. I had like 18 monologues.

[Katie Nolan]

Oh, my God.

[Maddy Kelly]

And the drama teacher was like a whiplash style crazy person.

[Chris (Master Editor)]

Whoa.

[Maddy Kelly]

So it was kind of like out of the pot, like into the fire. Exactly. You're done with dad tennis, but now you're gonna deal with this British sharp little bob dramatic.

[Katie Nolan]

And that turned you into the actor you are today.

[Maddy Kelly]

Yeah, it turned me into fire. The cash hang.

[Katie Nolan]

That I am such a chill hang.

[Maddy Kelly]

Yeah. The laid back for a music theater.

[Katie Nolan]

[Maddy Kelly]

Yeah.

Okay, so tennis, not so much for you, but I will say ranked 16th in British Columbia for girls under 12, which I don't think we should be ranking girls under 12, personally. I think they should all be number one or leave them alone.

Yes.

[Katie Nolan]

And then you went on to play soccer also?

[Maddy Kelly]

I was playing soccer like 5 to 14. I played on the 10th and 10th.

[Katie Nolan]

That's good. Soccer ages.

[Maddy Kelly]

Yeah, yeah, yeah. I was really good at throw inside.

[Katie Nolan]

Nice.

[Maddy Kelly]

I was always like, let's use our hands. How about that?

[Katie Nolan]

Let me be the part where we go a little off script and do the thing we're not supposed to do. I'm using my hands.

[Maddy Kelly]

I'm gonna use my hands.

[Katie Nolan]

Did you ever think about being a goalie? You can use your hands quite a bit.

[Maddy Kelly]

No, I think I was too small. It was like leaving too much surface area.

[Chris (Master Editor)]

Yeah.

[Katie Nolan]

You don't take up a lot of space which is needed in that giant net.

[Maddy Kelly]

Yeah.

[Katie Nolan]

So throw ins. And that was just a throw in specialist.

[Maddy Kelly]

I also had a very brief stint in gymnastics, which I really wanted to pursue. But my parents, which now I look back on this and think this was genius. But they were like, no way.

[Katie Nolan]

Why is it genius? And why'd they say no?

[Maddy Kelly]

Because it was so intense. Like they were making us all. They wouldn't let the parents watch the practices. And they. And it's red flag because they were sort of like abusing us.

[Katie Nolan]

Because they were abusing us.

[Maddy Kelly]

Yeah, like they were pushing our bodies to points that I think at the time, you think like, oh, it's so cool. I'm flexible. And you get older and you're like,

[Katie Nolan]

wait, are we talking over splits? Because that's what I. That's my first memory of trauma. I was a rhythmic gymnast, which is always an embarrassing to think to say to a gymnast, because it was like, oh, so you don't do any of the flips or any of the danger. But I.

[Maddy Kelly]

You have a ribbon. We.

[Isabella]

Yeah.

[Katie Nolan]

And a hoop and a ball and clubs.

[Maddy Kelly]

The ball was the most embarrassing one because I was also in rhythmic gymnastics. For the record.

[Chris (Master Editor)]

No, Shut up.

[Maddy Kelly]

Yes, I was. Shut up. Yes.

[Katie Nolan]

I've never in my life, met in my adulthood another person who even knows what it is.

[Maddy Kelly]

Oh, yeah, Maddie.

[Katie Nolan]

Clubs were most embarrassing to me because I always bonked myself with them. They were like, very. For some reason, they make you train on the heavy ones, and then as you get older, they give you the rubber ones that throw those things around, but the heavy plastic ones. Anyway, there was a reason I was bringing this up, and it was over splits. They would make you do a split. Okay. So that's one leg for those listening, one leg forward, one leg back. A split. You know what it is. And then they take your front leg and put it for us. It was on a folding chair. You would put the heel of your front leg that's in a split on a folding chair so that you're pushing your torso to make the split more than 180 degrees. And then we would have a coach come and sit on our butts to push us down even further.

[Maddy Kelly]

Yeah.

[Katie Nolan]

And I remember when I told people in school that they were like, what?

[Maddy Kelly]

Yeah.

[Katie Nolan]

And it was so normal.

[Maddy Kelly]

That was like the beginning. That was like, if you're. You're here for a reason.

[Brady]

Yeah.

[Maddy Kelly]

But when the more advanced girls were doing it in between two chairs.

[Katie Nolan]

Yes.

[Maddy Kelly]

So they were suspended.

[Katie Nolan]

Front leg on a chair, back leg on a chair.

[Maddy Kelly]

And I was supposed to feel inferior because I wasn't doing the splits under two chairs. And now I look back at everything we know about hypermobility, and I'm like, okay, so none of those girls were gonna make any from this. And they're gonna have pain forever.

[Katie Nolan]

I know. And I thought the way we were told is, well, listen, it rips your muscles a little bit. That's why it hurts. But then they grow back more elongated. And that made enough sense.

[Maddy Kelly]

And you'll be skinny.

[Katie Nolan]

I went like, oh, perfect.

[Chris (Master Editor)]

Yeah.

[Katie Nolan]

And then I'll be popular. And then I'll have a boyfriend. And then, because I'm like nine, so I'm going like, this is what was meant for me.

[Maddy Kelly]

Right.

[Katie Nolan]

And now I have to sit Funny on every chair that I sit in. You can still probably do a split, though, can't you?

[Maddy Kelly]

No, I wasn't that good at that. I was really good at walkovers, all that, you know, I was like, just. I would walk around, like, just cartwheeling like an aerial. Yeah. But they wouldn't even give me the stick, by the way. They were just like, you have to master the floor. And I was like, damn. Could someone give me something?

[Katie Nolan]

Yeah, let me play around. I want to do the Lizzie McGuire.

[Maddy Kelly]

I'm already in rhythmic gymnastics. I'm already in the joke gymnastics. Like, give me the ribbon or something.

[Katie Nolan]

Yeah. No, they threw us right into it. They were like, pick that up and see what tricks you can do with it. But I was in group. We did all. Everything we did was group, so it was like a lot of.

[Maddy Kelly]

Did you also do dance?

[Katie Nolan]

Yeah, that was. It was. I did rhythmic gymnastics out of my dance center. They were like, we're starting a team. And then we would have to spend all of our time in Connecticut. Where's the, like, hub for rhythmic gymnastics? In Canada. Where did you travel for, like, your regional meets? Everything we did was in Connecticut.

[Maddy Kelly]

God, I don't know. My parents were like, this is a red flag. We're getting you out of here.

[Katie Nolan]

I think I was like, they were like, try it. And then they said, please don't.

[Maddy Kelly]

All I remember is that that was the year the movie Stick it came out.

[Chris (Master Editor)]

Hell, yeah.

[Maddy Kelly]

And I remember younger than me, the older girls were holding a newspaper, reading an article about it because they were so excited to see their life represented on film.

[Katie Nolan]

I won a junior Olympic gold medal. I should have said that up top. I'm sorry. I won a junior Olympic gold medal at rhythmic gymnastics.

[Maddy Kelly]

Is this, like, commonly known?

[Katie Nolan]

Yeah, I get made. It's because it's the punchline of us. It's just funny. It's. Nobody's going like, wow, I was 10. So it's like not real Olympics, but it technically counts.

[Maddy Kelly]

Yeah.

[Katie Nolan]

And is in my Wikipedia. And I just thought you should know so you know what you're dealing with.

[Maddy Kelly]

No, I'm really glad you said that.

[Katie Nolan]

Just so that you show me the required.

[Maddy Kelly]

Did you get along with the girls?

[Katie Nolan]

[Maddy Kelly]

Yeah.

[Katie Nolan]

They were like my best friends because we spent rhythmic gymnastics was. Why are we talking about this? We'll move on in a second. But rhythmic gymnastics was like Saturday mornings. And that's like a formative time for a kid. You're like, it's your first sleep in of the week. Cause you got School all week and then you sleep in on Saturdays and kids would watch Saturday morning cartoons and then you would like discuss that. This was before when I was younger and there wasn't really a lot of Internet. You probably. The Internet was around by the time you were a kid.

[Maddy Kelly]

Yeah, like neopets.

[Katie Nolan]

Yeah, yeah, we had gigapets. We laid the groundwork for that. But anyway we. I didn't ever watch any Saturday morning cartoons because I was always doing over splits or whatever on Saturdays and Friday nights. And so yeah, they were my friends. There was drama though. I mean it was a bunch of like girls going through puberty together at the same time doing a sport nobody respected. So we had a lot of feelings, but yeah, we got through it.

[Maddy Kelly]

You had a lot of intensity. Yeah, I got along with the gymnastics girls, the tennis girls. I just could not. I never made a friend.

[Katie Nolan]

Yeah.

[Isabella]

Why?

[Maddy Kelly]

Because you're traveling. Same thing. Like you're traveling for these tournaments and stuff. And I just didn't get them. They were just. To be a good juniors tennis player you have to be really committed to just not messing up. And I just did not want to play like that. Like I just to this day if I play tennis it's like much more fun to do like higher risk shots and run around and Yeah, I have a western grip if that means anything to anyone.

[Katie Nolan]

That means a lot to me and

[Maddy Kelly]

I have since I was five for some reason. But these are my little rebellions, you know. Cause I wasn't actually really aligned in my sports career.

[Katie Nolan]

You're more like I just want to be a free flowing idea. I want to try and have fun with it. I don't want to be perfect. I don't want to be worried about winning and losing.

[Maddy Kelly]

But I mean I was really competitive. It was like I didn't want to win just because I put the ball back in the inner court long enough for them to mess up.

[Katie Nolan]

You wanted to do the shot that made somebody go like yes, like wow, how could she?

[Maddy Kelly]

Exactly.

[Katie Nolan]

You're like, yeah, that's right. You wanted to like win, win. I get that. I like that. That's the excite. You would have been an exciting tennis player to watch.

[Maddy Kelly]

One of the most exciting under 12 tennis players. Yeah.

[Katie Nolan]

And again, I'm not watching. A lot of young kids do a lot of green flag as as just by a personal policy. But if I were watching, I'd be rooting for you now. Speaking of rooting World cup, as a former soccer. How long did you do that for? Just like a little Right. You said you played soccer seven or eight years.

[Maddy Kelly]

Those girls are my best friends. I love the soccer girls.

[Katie Nolan]

That's what soccer has to be. You know, you can't really. There's probably, like, a girl or two that everyone's, like, weren't. She's not really in the group, but that's her choice, almost. She's like an independent. And then there's the group. You know what I mean? That's a good soccer. Like, a good makeup of a soccer team to me. And those were your best friends. So you liked soccer, I assume. Are you watching the World Cup?

[Maddy Kelly]

So I have been forced to watch

the World cup at gunpoint, literally.

My. My darling boyfriend, who was so excited I was coming on the show, by the way.

Well, I just had the most exciting thing that's ever happened to me, which is I watched the entire NBA playoffs from the beginning, which culminated in me being in New York City for the Knicks to win. Okay.

That was a bigger deal than Fallon. Like, that was the luckiest thing that has ever happened to me. And then congratulations, by the way. Oh, thank you. You right away, like, nothing's happened. Everyone's like, oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. And now you're gonna watch tons of soccer. You're gonna watch weeks and weeks of soccer. The field is huge.

It's big.

And. And I just would be remiss if I didn't ask you then if you've got thoughts on the Kawhi Clippers situation

and what is it?

Okay, so what it is is treetops ironically. So Kawhi Leonard signed a big contract with the Clippers however many years ago that was that he went to your team and they're alleging. It is alleged that he may have circumvented the salary cap. Whereas the Clippers paid him more money than legally they would be able to pay him under the rules of how the NBA works by getting him a gig on the side. That was a sponsorship job with a company, but it wasn't real. It was like a no show job. And all it was was them funneling money directly to Kawhi Leonard without the outside the purview of the NBA. So basically breaking the rules to give him more money. Then they traded him back to Toronto and they were gonna let that happen. And the NBA said, well hold on, you can't trade him until we figure out if he did this or not. And now there's a second plane that is at the tower. There is a second story which is that they think there might be another job he had that was another outside of why do they have salary caps? What a prescient question. Because we're getting into that in baseball next season probably. I think it's for competitive advantage is the number one reason given. It's like if everybody can spend as much as going to get some teams that don't want to spend and they never do and then teams like let's say the Dodgers, who buy everybody they can and all the players want the most money so they all end up going to one team. And that's why the Dodgers have an all star team that plays against everybody else in the league because there's no limit to what they can pay them. So a salary cap would make it so that every team only can get to this much and then everybody's got to figure out the rest. It like puts a ceiling off the argument against is that like who are you to tell me how much money I can make?

I thought a free market was what we're always talking about in capitalism. Nobody caps the owner's money that they can make.

Okay. So the first night I met my boyfriend's parents was game seven. They went to game seven, Right, that series. Yeah. And.

No, we were watching it on television. But it was the night that I met them, so, you know, I was very nervous.

High stress environment to enter.

Yes. And they're an LA family, so they're true Dodgers fans because they have lived in LA for generations.

Yes.

And I, I was really nervous and they were really nervous about the game. And the dog is very sensitive, their dog. So the dog was like dry heaving for the entire game because we kept like cheering. He's like a. I guess he's like a doodle something something. But he's quite big and he's very cute, but he's. He is special. He's a different kind of guy. And he was really just having a very physical reaction to all of our excitement. And so was my boyfriend, by the way, because we tried to sit down to dinner at some point during the game and his mom said to me, so where did you go to college? And Henry stood up and said, guys, I can't do this right now. And went back to the TV So we're watching the whole game.

It's too deep. And there's a lot going on.

Every time something happens, the dog starts dry heaving.

Perfect.

And then the last moment of the. Which we don't know this is gonna be the last moment, but it is in this moment, the bat is cracked, the first basement is out. And we all scream. And then the dog throws up.

Into Brad, the father's hands.

And then the double play happens. So the other guy gets out.

We're familiar, of course, with LeBron James, where he's going to go, where he will end up. And there was this story that an NBA insider told us that LeBron James agent Rich Paul has basically said they're not even going to talk to every single team about where, because LeBron's a free agent can go anywhere. They're not necessarily talking to every team, but they did want some teams to just send him a voice note that he would play for LeBron James to convince him.

That's awesome about your team.

And it just feels crazy to me to get executives to make an elevator pitch in a voice note in front of LeBron James.

Romantic cheating, not game cheating. Okay. Vice captain of the Australian women's cricket team. Her name is Ashley, Ashley Gardner. She's making headlines because of her marital problems with her wife, Monica Wright. So Ashley and Monica were married before they were married in 2025, Ashley was in a long term relationship with Monica, whose relationship caught media attention through social media posts where Monica was deeply ingrained in the with the Australian team and players. But now it has been revealed their marriage has ended in less than a year. The two had been together for five years before getting married in April of 2025. And then after initial reports came out, Monica was like, these are too vague for me. So she went on social media onto Instagram where her account is little bit of Monica. Shout out, shout out mambo number five. And publicly alleged that her, now her wife, her ex, the woman that was cheating on her, and said, this is who my wife cheated on me with. And posted a non flattering photo.

Of her Australian teammate, Georgia Voll. The Instagram post went viral. It got a lot of attention. Are you mad or are you not mad with the way that this was handled?

Hey. By the way, they're not being specific enough for me. She cheated and it was with a coat. And then clearly I think where I'm Maddie at her is that it's like, well, let's not attack the other woman for her looks. You know, if you don't think. It's not like if you're not gonna

But it's not like if that chance that your wife cheated with was hot, you would go, well, I get it. It's not like you would look at it and go, that person's hotter than me. It wouldn't. It would still hurt. It would still be bad. It would still feel bad. And so this was a little bit. I guess if you're gonna lashing out.

Right. I mean, it's an ugliness that has come out for sure. But you know, in defense, you are trying to get revenge. Some people want revenge.

On people that have wronged them. And some people suffering in silence does not make them feel good.

They want the integrity of just being like, hey, if I'm a little weird lately, it's because this is going on, this is happening to me.

Oh, that's kind of hoping you were leading towards. No, we had this conversation, you know, Rosebud Baker, we were talking to her last week about times when you just are like, ah, screw it, I'm gonna light everything on fire. And I realized I don't think I've ever done that. That and that made me sad as a woman. Cuz I think sometimes you should just have moments where you go decorum. I'm just going to let everybody know. Have you had any of those yet? You're young. You don't even have any resentment yet, do you?

We do. Sarahson says hi. Casualties crew. You may have seen the recent announcement that the Winter Olympics will introduce synchronized ice skating as a new competition. This is awesome. However, there's a caveat. This will only include nine skaters instead of the traditional 16. The given reason for this is for faster action to make it more palatable for new viewers. I find the rationale to be pretty weak overall, given how dominant figure skating was at the last Olympics. Alyssa Liu proved it does not need to be simplified for viewership. Additionally, less people on the ice inherently limits the type of action that can occur. For example, less simultaneous lifts. Yeah, I'd love to know what the casual crew thinks of this. My wife is a former competitive synchro skater, so we're fired up about this. Love you mean it.

Love you mean it. Thank you for your email. I gotta be honest, and I'm shocked by this. I've never heard of it. I. There very rarely. I mean, I've heard of ski dancing as an Olympic sport, so, like, I've heard of some pretty obscure. I didn't know we were doing synchronized skating like that. This. And to hear that they're bringing it in is great. But to cut it from 16 to 9, that's not a small cut. That's basically considerable. Yeah, that's seven of the. Of the Possible people out there not being out there anymore. And now. So this is just team figure skating? Yes, yes.

I kind of like this idea of like, of limiting the amount of people.

Now tell me why.

I don't know. I think just considering like the sizing of like the rank, like, I feel like you may, they may be able to like utilize more, more space and, and kind of be more creative maybe in some of the, the moves they do.

And I get that and I hear you, but I also then go, are they going to change these teams that have been teams for a long time to find out they're finally going to be an Olympic sport and then go, we gotta cut seven of you and change our whole routine to fill the space more is sort of like a tough ask.

You know, now with 90 seconds of watching this in my life. Yeah, I will, I will. I will have.

Please give us your informed opinion.

I think they need all 16 because I think the coolest aspect of this, it's like watching the college marching band where you see like them making the whole word Ohio and then somebody's, you know, they're dotting the eye and all the shapes that this amount of people moving in unison does. That's the coolest part of it.

Yeah.

That's half seeing them.

I wonder if this could be like a trial period for skating so then once they prove that there's enough viewership, enough interest in synchronized skating, then they can expand that from.

Okay, but listen, let me say you should, as an Australian, you should maybe not speak up on this because it, it may be One of your own who took a trial period and ruined it for everybody. Because breakdancing wasn't a trial period and

should never been an Olympic.

I don't think we're going to be hearing from break dance. So things can go wrong during your trial. Showing that, then make everybody go, we don't want this. And so I would say that they, they should at least during the trial go, this is what it is. And then maybe people go, whoa, that's too many guys. That's too many gals. And then cut back. Is it. Is it. What's the word? I'm trying to think of both sexes. Is it both?

It's. It's single gender for now. So I think that the plan for 2030 is to have it as just a female competition and then there would be room for it to grow into competition.

Because in the Olympics, they just cut the one that was men's only, which was Nordic combined. No more Nordic combined in the Olympics. I saw that headline came across my desk because, like I said, I keep my finger on an Olympic pulse. So interesting. I'm excited to see it. And actually, if Sarah and her wife are, like, upset about it, then I'm upset on their behalf. But as a casual who hasn't seen it before, I'm definitely interested to take a look at it.

It's raising awareness for the sport for sure.

All right. They. Here's a fun fact I just learned because orcas are at the very top of the food chain. They absorb all the pollution consumed by the animals they eat.
