Today, Katie and the Casualties debate the existence of Octopi and break down suggestions for new obscure summer sports, then comedian Ariel Elias sits down to talk about her career, her new special, and her viral moment of chugging a heckler's High Noon, her new WNBA fandom, Liberty games, and Ellie's new Birkin, the USOPC quietly banning transgender women from women's sports, Rafael Devers finally playing first base not in Boston, Pete Crow-Armstrong visiting his young fans' lemonade stand and their complete lack of enthusiasm, the Gen Z Stare, a defense of Millennials, respect for Rich Hill and Venus Williams showing out this week at 45 and why we all need to root for older athletes, Lebron continuing to troll Drake, rugby, football camp, Kentucky sports, and the lore of Tubby Smith. Isabella
I did, yeah.
Katie Nolan
What's your generation's understanding of him? Can you name an Ozzy Osbourne song?
Isabella
I don't think so. I mean, I might know it, but I don't know the name.
Katie Nolan
That's fine. I didn't. I shouldn't have put you on spot.
Isabella
I didn't.
Katie Nolan
But like Crazy Train, you couldn't just be like, it's Crazy Train. We know Crazy Train.
Ariel Elias
Sorry.
Isabella
Round glasses.
Katie Nolan
Okay. Round glasses.
Ariel Elias
Mm.
Katie Nolan
He did. Yeah.
Isabella
RIP Sad.
Katie Nolan
I mean, truly a. Such a big name. One of those, like.
Isabella
Yeah, like you never die.
Katie Nolan
Right?
Isabella
You know?
Katie Nolan
Exactly. And so closely tied to sports in the sense that I just feel like music from Black Sabbath, from Ozzy are like sports anthems. I feel like we're always hearing. I saw the rock music.
Isabella
Well, what's one that's like a sports anthem?
Katie Nolan
They do sing it from Crazy. No. No chance. There's no chance I'm going to do that. What?
Isabella
So I know because there's a lot of songs that I know of, but I don't know the name, so I might be able to.
Katie Nolan
Dun, dun dun dun dun dun dun dun. Okay. Hello, welcome to Casuals, the sports podcast that likes sports a lot. Good stuff. Good stuff. A really good slogan. I'm Katie Nolan. I'm your host who loves sports the most. Also here with Isabella in person. I'm looking at her pretty face right across the Sirius XM desk that we're sitting at. We're at the main office today because we're radio stars. I don't know if you've heard the casualties are also here on Zoom. Say hi, guys. Hello.
Ariel Elias
What's up, Brady?
Katie Nolan
Why, hello. Oh, hello.
Brady
I did not put on an accent.
Katie Nolan
It's like asking him to say hi to like a. Like a cat. Oh, hello there. Hi. Hello. We're here. We're talking sports. Our email Casuals with katienolanmail.com our voicemail 646-801-0043 on IG and TikTok. We are at CasualsThePodcast Casuals live. Guys, we are almost coming to the end of Casuals Live week.
Isabella
I know.
Katie Nolan
Isabella, how has the experience been for you?
Isabella
It's been cool. You know, I haven't said anything crazy live yet. That's my biggest fear.
Katie Nolan
You haven't said anything crazy? You did ask a follow up question of me that immediately you asked and I looked at you and you went, I don't know why I asked that. I'm so sorry. Because I was like, I don't know. I don't know. You were like, what team has Rich Hill played for the most? I was like, it's a good question.
Isabella
Give me the era of this player.
Katie Nolan
Look at you.
Isabella
In the year of 2006. I know, right?
Katie Nolan
You called it erra.
Isabella
Yeah. Not era.
Katie Nolan
Just minutes ago, you called it era. I'm so proud of you. That's right.
Ariel Elias
She's growing up.
Katie Nolan
She's growing up. Those days when Isabella used to refer.
Ariel Elias
To it as era.
Katie Nolan
I know.
Isabella
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
Well, always remember that era. She was in her era.
Isabella
Era.
Katie Nolan
Casuals live. It's on Mad Dog Sports Radio. You're as. I'm as surprised as you are. We're doing it daily all week, 12 to 1pm you guys have showed up. You have showed up and shown out, and I appreciate you so much. Our listeners. Um, I will say my. One of my biggest regrets from this week so far, and it's only Wednesday when we're laying this track down, but to pull the curtain back a little, my biggest regret from this week, I think I botched that call with Sarah, the Jeopardy. Champ who I love so much. I was caught by surprise. I didn't know you were gonna call in, Sarah. We had to fit you in before we got to a different thing. And I think I. I'm, like, looking back on it, I' I would have had such a more interesting conversation with her if I had just been present. Other than that, Dan told me to be nice to myself this week. And so I don't really have many other notes for myself. But Sarah, if you are listening, if we didn't fully lose you as a fan, we'll interact again. Thank you for calling. You guys have been so great. Like, the fans showed up. Every time we take a call, I'm waiting for it to be someone who's like, who are you? And what is this? And instead it's someone being like, I like your stuff. And I'm calling with an interesting thing to say.
Isabella
Everyone has said love you. Mean it.
Katie Nolan
I know, and I've said it back. It's getting people a little flustered, but.
Isabella
I'm just giddy in the studio.
Katie Nolan
Guys, shut the mean.
Isabella
She literally, like, when they say I love you, mean it. Katie just jumps up in that leg.
Katie Nolan
I do most of it standing up because I've got so much energy flowing through me. It's like, so exciting to talk to you guys in person. So it's been really fun. We're doing it again just for the rest of this week. Through Friday, 12 to 1pm Eastern on. On Mad Dog Sports Radio. If you don't have SiriusXM, that's okay. You can get three months free if you want so that you can listen to it if you go to SiriusXM.com Casuals LIVE. And then if you want to call in again, it's noon to 1 Eastern. The number is going to be 888-Mad Dog-6. We've had full phone lines every day.
Isabella
We have.
Katie Nolan
And it's been such a. I can't say enough how cool it's been. I should have written down smarter words to say about.
Isabella
I will say every day was included at least. David.
Katie Nolan
Okay. We do have a guy named David who said he was gonna listen to this podcast. So he might be here, but I don't think he is.
Isabella
I don't think so either.
Katie Nolan
And David. What's up, David? David called.
Ariel Elias
He didn't know what a podcast was. I don't think he's listening well, but.
Katie Nolan
He said he was gonna find it. But he also called in and started by saying, I'm a huge casual. This is exactly the show for me. And then he ended his call after. I don't wanna say sexually harassing, but tiptoeing. Tiptoeing that life. We were coworkers. I think what he was offering might not have been cool, but he. Then he was like, I'm the opposite of a casual, but it's cool. I like what you do.
Isabella
So I was like, which one was it?
Katie Nolan
And I was like, what are we doing, David? What foot are we getting off on? I can't tell. Are you a liar or are you just a nice man? And we still don't know, but he's been calling in every day at the beginning of the show, and then he's our Matt Damon. We get to the end and I go, oh, no, that's right, David. Maybe we'll get to him tomorrow. So let's see if we pay that bid off on Friday. But sincerely, thank you guys so much for the support. This could have. This could have gone a whole bunch of different ways. And I'm loving the way that it's going. So thank you. And what we learn from this, we will take to the podcast. And hopefully maybe we can do, like, call in episodes of the podcast. Maybe we'll end up doing casuals live, like, literally live, and you can come see us. We don't know yet. It's all. We're just trying to build slowly. But it has been fun building with such a cool audience who are on board with our idea and really tuned in. On that note, we got an email from Kayla that I wanted to read. Sorry, Chris, I'm taking this part of your job because I wanted to read this one. Kayla wrote in and said, hello, Katie. And the casualties. My name's Kayla. I love the pod I'm trying hard to get into sports, but it all feels overwhelmingly corporate and the coverage of it is so boring to watch. Very interesting points. I like seeing sports from the outside perspective for someone who's trying to break in. And that's. I can see that being a thing. I enjoyed the DART segment you all did, but I would love to hear about even more unique events. I did some research. Love that. And. And I think these sports could be cool to hear about underwater hockey.
Isabella
I need to know more about that.
Katie Nolan
AKA Octopush, which I was already in.
Isabella
I'm sorry, I can't help but think of octopus.
Katie Nolan
Okay.
Isabella
It's not a real thing, but my mind went to it.
Katie Nolan
Well, an octopus is a real thing.
Brady
Absolutely is a real thing.
Katie Nolan
This is a real thing.
Isabella
Oh, I was. Okay, never mind. Let's move on.
Ariel Elias
What did you.
Katie Nolan
What?
Isabella
No, in my mind I was like, octopus. Yeah, like two separate words. And as soon as you guys said it, I was like, oh, octopus is a thing.
Ariel Elias
Octopus.
Katie Nolan
Which isn't a real thing, but we can move on. They supposedly float around in the ocean. I'm not buying it. Yes, Octopush has some events happening. Has some events happening this summer. I believe it was developed in England. This is Kayla talking. I'm reading the email. In the 50s and is now popular worldwide. Well, you'd have to define popular because I didn't know about it, but I'm excited to. Their next world tournament is the Europe Africa Championship in the Netherlands, August 17th through 23rd. That's solid research. August 2nd is the hobby horse championship happening in Alton, Michigan. These young ladies catch a lot of undeserved shit on the Internet for doing something they enjoy. It requires skill and dedication. So give them some love. Hobby horse. Is that what I think it is?
Brady
Head on a stick.
Isabella
That seems kind of hard. You gotta clench down there and, like, hold it. And while running and jumping around, you've.
Katie Nolan
Gotta have a strong octopus for this to work. I could see why these ladies catch a lot of undeserved shit on the Internet. I could at least understand because if you don't know that it's happening and then you see the video is funny at first, but looking at them try to get over those jumps, it is a physical. I mean, and it's fun. Who cares? Who cares? Have fun. I am going to look up if they have to trot in a certain way. If they're like, being judged on the way that they're trotting. Not horse like enough -10, you know, like, is there like a Who's judging this? Last but not least. This is back to Kayla's email. She says, last but not least, also on August 2nd. Well, conflict of interest there. What are we going to do? We're going to do the hobby horse championship. Are we going to do the dog surfing championship in Pacifica, California? That's tough programming for the hobby horses because it's to go up against not just dogs, but dogs on a surfboard.
Isabella
That sounds really cute.
Katie Nolan
It does sound really cute. She wrote, Kayla wrote, if you can't love a dog on a surfboard, you're an asshole. I love what you do and hope to hear more about the fringe sports of the world. Love you. Mean it. I agree, Kayla.
Isabella
Love you.
Katie Nolan
Mean it as well. This great email, chock full of information. I will be putting, I actually think on August 2nd. I think I'm going to a dog birthday party.
Ariel Elias
Ooh.
Katie Nolan
So that would be perfect if I can find. If that's on tv. I would love the dog birthday party to watch the. You thought what?
Isabella
I thought you were gonna like buy the dog a surfboard for their birthday. Yeah.
Katie Nolan
Okay. I'll have to check. I don't know if Hayley's dog can surf and I think they live in Brooklyn, so that might be a tough. Not really like a good surf community.
Isabella
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
You know, but I'm sure they would love to. They would love to be those people. Like, they have that vibe certainly. But I don't know that the dog will be able to surf. But maybe if I tried to watch that with Myrtle, she would just bark at the TV the whole time. She is at the point it's unruly at my parents house. When I'm not there, she will run at the tv. I think she wants to like pull it off of the wall, which isn't cool. Myrtle.
Isabella
It's not cool.
Katie Nolan
You gonna pay for it. You break it, you bought it. That's the rule in this house. Have I mentioned yet we have a great guest today? I don't even think so. That I have. And we're clearly not doing a yap. I'm yapped out, dude. I'm yapped out. It's Wednesday. I woke up today to do the radio show and was like, what could I possibly have to say tomorrow? There's so much talking. But it's going well, I think.
Isabella
I think so.
Katie Nolan
Okay, fine. So that's your yap. It's just me talking to you and thanking you from the bottom of my heart for. Listen. Listening to the radio show. We have a guest today. She's awesome. She's a stand up comedian. We met right before the world shut down and then had not seen each other since. Her name's Ariel Elias. She's, she's great. She's fantastic. You might know her, she had a viral clip during right after the pandemic. I don't know where the timeline. It was 2022, she was doing stand up and somebody whipped a beer can fully at her while she was on stage. So sometimes you hear somebody's voice or you see their face and you go, what do I know them from? And so that's why I'm telling you this. But the clip does not define her. She's very funny stand up comedian. She has a special that's out now on 800 pound gorillas YouTube channel. That's a comedy company. It's called a Jewish Star. It came out on July 15th. Ariel Elias will join us right after this break. With summer in full swing, you start to feel that familiar urge to refresh your close. Ariel Elias
I wouldn't dream of blaming you.
Katie Nolan
Thank you so much. I appreciate you showing up a Jewish star. Your new special came out the 15th on 800 pound gorilla's YouTube channel.
Ariel Elias
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
Congratulations.
Ariel Elias
Thank you.
Katie Nolan
How does it feel to have that done?
Ariel Elias
Oh, it feels like a huge relief. And it feels. I'm very proud of it, which I wasn't expecting to be. Yeah. I thought I was gonna just watch it and. But I've been like, no. Oh, I'm good at this.
Katie Nolan
Yes.
Ariel Elias
Okay. Okay.
Katie Nolan
We're sitting up straight. People may know you if they know you from a. I mean, what's it like to have a viral video at your job?
Ariel Elias
You know, what's interesting is after the special came out, I put that clip up again. And then suddenly I felt very different towards the clip. I had been sort of feeling like. And if you don't know, the clip is I had a beer can thrown at me while I was performing. And I.
Katie Nolan
Not to interrupt your own story of your own experience, but just to sell. Whipped.
Ariel Elias
Yeah, that was thrown hard.
Katie Nolan
That was thrown very hard.
Ariel Elias
Yes. And then I drank the beer.
Katie Nolan
That's important.
Ariel Elias
So that's chugged. Yes, Chugged it.
Katie Nolan
Chugged it.
Ariel Elias
So that's the clip that went viral. And for a long time, I had this relationship with this clip where I was grateful for everything it brought me, of course, but also was like, I think I had some resentment that one. This couple that was heckling me and threw this at me. Got to be part of my story.
Katie Nolan
Totally.
Ariel Elias
And I was like, no, but like, I'm a writer. Like, I'm not a crowd work comedian anyway. Like, I'm a writer.
Katie Nolan
Didn't even think about that.
Ariel Elias
And so then once the special came out and I put the clip up again, cause I was trying desperately to get engagement, I was like, oh, I actually feel okay about this now. This is just part of it. And so that was like a nice feeling.
Katie Nolan
It's a beautiful evolution in the relationship to the clip. Cause, yes, especially because it has political themes in it. I can imagine a viral clip sometimes is like. Cause it's happened. I mean, stuff I've said has not gone as big viral. But like, when everyone's chiming in on it and it gets really political and you're like, that's not even what it's about. Watching people misunderstand the point. Watching people like mischaracterize you as a person can at first be very, like, make it go away.
Ariel Elias
Yeah. I get people who are like, I found you from this clip. But if I make a political joke, they're like, but you need to stay out of politics. And I'm like, wait, do you not know how you found me?
Katie Nolan
That doesn't make any. It never would have happened if I stayed out of politics. So anyway, it does not define you at all. I just wanted to make sure people were like, I know. I know that face from somewhere. Wasn't that the girl who chugged a giant. I can't believe there was beer left in it for you to chug.
Ariel Elias
Yeah, it was a high noon.
Katie Nolan
There was a. Oh my God, that's even crazier.
Ariel Elias
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
Cuz that's alcohol. Well.
Ariel Elias
And it feels also like the least throwable drink. You're like, it's a seltzer.
Katie Nolan
Right?
Ariel Elias
Like, that's not what we're. That's not the vibe of a seltz.
Katie Nolan
Not to stereotype a seltz drinker, but I wouldn't have expected them to throw that hard.
Isabella
No.
Ariel Elias
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
Quite frankly, the noise it made against the wall is even more surprising when you take into consideration it was like a grape fruit vodka soda, Right?
Ariel Elias
Yeah. Anything flavored of a fruit.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Ariel Elias
Like maybe like a pumpkin ale, right? Yeah, maybe.
Katie Nolan
Which is hard to chug. So I'm almost glad that you. But either way, we'll drop it. We'll never talk about it again. She's more than that clip.
Ariel Elias
We can talk about it.
Katie Nolan
Okay.
Ariel Elias
But it's fine.
Katie Nolan
She's more than that clip. Real quick, before we jump into our sports news that we have, you've got dates coming up at the end of August down in the Southwest.
Ariel Elias
Yeah. The ideal time to go to the Southwest.
Katie Nolan
Of course. Everybody loves to be in the desert in August.
Ariel Elias
I'm going to Plano, Texas, Albuquerque, New Mexico. San Diego, California, and Chandler, Arizona.
Katie Nolan
Nice. San Diego's always nice. Yeah. No matter what. That'll be a nice, like. And then back out into the desert.
Ariel Elias
And then back to Arizona.
Katie Nolan
Who doesn't want to get super hot and laugh, you know?
Ariel Elias
Sure.
Katie Nolan
Get super, super hot and laugh at jokes. Come into the ac. Hopefully the clubs have, I think.
Ariel Elias
I'm sure I'm, like, doing great, but I'm not doing bad.
Katie Nolan
That would be the toughest sell of, like, come sit in this hot room, would you? I want to make you laugh. Um, all right, Ariel, let's jump into some sports news and see what's going on. Um, NBA, WNBA All Star weekend was last weekend. Are you getting in on this WNBA hype train?
Ariel Elias
I like the idea of it, for sure. I went to one game, but I think, like, right after they got kind of popular and I was like, well, this is more expensive than I thought it was going to be. Why aren't they paying these women more?
Katie Nolan
Exactly.
Ariel Elias
It's expensive. It's an expensive ticket. Also. It's an. If it wasn't in Brooklyn, I think I would go more.
Katie Nolan
I will say the subway is very convenient. If the subway were less convenient, if it didn't let out directly at Barclays center, you wouldn't get me there. But the one, I've been to one and I loved it. Yeah, the vibe is just. I don't want to piss anybody off, but the vibe is just safer. It just feels safe. You just feel a little safer. And I don't always feel unsafe at sports. I just want to say I feel a lot safer. And it also just felt like I liked the vibe of when a woman would get picked from the crowd to try to hit one of those, like, half court shots to win. I don't know. I think it's like a bitcoin wallet at Liberty games, which I don't love, but I like that it's like, oh, this woman's also kind of auditioning for all the other women in the. She's being like, watch me hit this shot.
Ariel Elias
Yeah, watch me show off.
Katie Nolan
And then everyone's like, oh, she was kind of cute. And then there's just this, like, the vibe is different.
Ariel Elias
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
And I like it.
Ariel Elias
Yeah, I like it, too. I like that the. The mascot for the Liberty is a. Is a little lovely elephant with eyelashes.
Katie Nolan
She got a Birkin bag. Really? She had a Birkin at All Star Weekend. And I'm like, how are we getting. You're on the list. Isn't there a list? Isn't there? Like, you know what, though?
Ariel Elias
Like, if she's not on the list, who is?
Katie Nolan
Exactly. Exactly, though. Like, logistics wise, the dork in me goes, now whose name's going down? Is that. Are they writing Ellie the elephant? Or is it whoever plays Ellie? Or is it. I don't know, but I loved it. Like, I can't believe you have a Birkin.
Ariel Elias
I bet it's Ellie the elephant. Because if something were to happen to the person who plays Ellie the elephant, if she, you know, if that person suddenly got fired.
Katie Nolan
Right.
Ariel Elias
Ellie lives on, Ellie lives on, Ellie gets the Birkin.
Katie Nolan
And they do a good job of, like, protecting. Yeah. Imagine if you get fired and you're like, technically, I think I should take the Birkin. It was me who earned it.
Isabella
I would argue for that.
Katie Nolan
I think I get to keep the Birkin. Secure the bag. That's what they always say.
Ariel Elias
Literally, secure the bag.
Katie Nolan
That's what they always say. Although anybody walking around with a Birk, and they never have it secured, which always makes me go, aren't you supposed to clasp those little. Aren't you supposed to close them? I'll never touch one. I don't. I can't.
Ariel Elias
You can't.
Katie Nolan
The money goes in the bag, not on the bag. I can't have an expensive purse. I treat my bags like garbage.
Ariel Elias
Yeah, me too.
Katie Nolan
I cannot be trusted.
Ariel Elias
When I walked in here, immediately, I was like, where on the floor can I throw this?
Katie Nolan
I like, just. Yeah, launch it across the room. That thing is like an old. I got that for free at a ESPNW summit. And it's the best bag. There's a million pockets. Shout out to Nike. But I can't. I can't have a nice purse.
Ariel Elias
Have you ever touched a Birkin?
Katie Nolan
No.
Ariel Elias
Would you want to maybe just to.
Katie Nolan
See what the leather quality is? Like, I'm buying stuff off Instagram ads. I'm at that phase. I just bought. I don't know when it's ever gonna show up, but I just bought a leather bright lime green mini backpack, like from the 90s. It's like a little mini, and I'm obsessed with it. And I think I'll just. It'll be one of those things that I bought aspirationally that, like, one day I'll be Brad enough to wear that, and then it's just gonna sit in my closet. I Bet.
Ariel Elias
Well, you'll wear it one time. It's gonna rain and it'll disintegrate.
Katie Nolan
Yes. Or I'll wear it one time. Somebody will go, oh, a backpack. And I'll go, they hate it. I wanna take it off and I'll never wear it again. All it takes is one person going, oh, that's interesting. And they're like, well, okay, that sucks. Sorry I wore it.
Ariel Elias
Or. Good for you.
Katie Nolan
Oh, I love you. So brave.
Ariel Elias
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
That is so brave. You're 38 and you're wearing that. That's so brave.
Ariel Elias
Don't point at me and say 38.
Katie Nolan
How old are you? Cause that's me.
Ariel Elias
I'm 36.
Katie Nolan
Ah, fuck you. Dan always says, you know, since we're in our 40s, and I go, let me stop you. We are nothing of the sort. I'm 38, you're 42, and so handsome. Okay, this one's fun.
Ariel Elias
Okay. I'm sorry I didn't have more on don't view NBA. No, that's not my. Okay.
Katie Nolan
No, that was perfect.
Ariel Elias
Okay, great.
Katie Nolan
Perfect amount.
Ariel Elias
And I immediately was like, but let's talk about the fashion.
Katie Nolan
Perfect amount. And you said that they should get paid more. And you were right.
Ariel Elias
Yeah, yeah.
Katie Nolan
Because they got a CBA coming up in October, and we think it's going to get a little messy, but it's good that you've established yourself on the side of pay them more. I think that's correct. Here's again, a really, really Fun 1. The US Olympic and Paralympic Committee has effectively barred transgender women from competing in women's sports, telling the federations overseeing swimming, athletics, which is track and other sports, it has a, quote, obligation to comply with an executive order previously issued by President Donald Trump. The change, announced Monday with a qu Update on the US OPC's website and confirmed in a letter sent to national sports governing bodies, follows a similar step taken by the NCAA earlier this year. Obviously, that's college athletics. The change is noted obliquely as a detail underneath their athlete safety policy, and it references Trump's executive order, quote, keeping men out of women's sports, end quote, which he signed in February. That order, among other things, threatens to rescind all funds from organizations that allow transgender athlete participation in women's sports. Spokesperson BAS said, we have an obligation to comply with federal expectations, and our revised policy emphasizes the importance of ensuring fair and safe competition environments for women. I guess we knew this was coming.
Ariel Elias
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
When Trump signed that executive order, not sure why it was so high on the priority list. With all the things going on in the world. But we certainly knew this was coming. And I guess you could say them changing the rule quietly and not having a whole big thing about it might be them trying to be like, we have to do this. We don't want to do this. That would be giving them the benefit of the doubt they haven't really earned. But this is clearly becoming a thing. And I'm. I don't even know how to toss this to you. I'm curious to know your thoughts.
Ariel Elias
Well, one question. It doesn't go the other way, right? It's not banning trans men from.
Katie Nolan
I don't think so. Which. The last we have statistics, which, you know, this was before the NCAA ban. There were 10 documented NCAA athletes of all the athletes who identified as transgender. And even then, we didn't between if they were transgender men or transgender women. So it. It really is just about keeping transgender athletes out of women's sports. So, Yes. I don't think it goes the other way.
Ariel Elias
It's so wild because it's like the amount of doping scandals that have happened in the Olympics, and then the results, for the most part, were just like, well, they can't anymore perform under their country's flag. And you're like, okay, but, like, are there any actual consequences for these teams that have these systemic doping scandals? Isn't that more of a safety issue? And they're just like, no, no, no. Don't worry about it. It's fine.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. Well, we can't say Russia at the Olympics, but, you know, that's basically who they're competing for. They're not allowed to say the name. That's not really a huge. We still know it's Russia, right?
Ariel Elias
Or, like, having these very young girls in figure skating and gymnastics do these jumps that are so horrible for their body, and it's why they only compete in one Olympics. It's like, you don't care about safety. You obviously don't, because if you did, these were the thing. These would be the things that you would be putting in regulations for. Instead, you're putting it. You're mentioning swimming, which is not a contact sport.
Katie Nolan
Right.
Ariel Elias
It's one of the sports I was a swimmer through up until college, from, like, ages, like 5 through 17. It's one of the sports with the lowest injury rates because there's no contact.
Katie Nolan
It's what older people do when they want to exercise. They go. It's low impact. You get in the water. It's like what I've started to do, and it's like safe but not.
Ariel Elias
You know, I kept trying to do these Chloe Ting workouts, you know, and I would like destroy my knees. And then when the public pools opened again, I was like, oh, I think I could do that. I think I could do that.
Katie Nolan
That's what's up.
Ariel Elias
It's just me and an 80 year old leathered man shout out. But so it's just such a. It's bullshit. It's just bullshit. You don't care about women's safety or women's sport sports or women's.
Katie Nolan
Like, it's so funny, all these people who have swept in to participate in this conversation saying, we're protecting women's sports, protecting women's sports. It's like, where have you been? Like, we. You weren't at any of this stuff before. You don't care. And funny enough, looking at you and the people you associate with, you're not usually the group of people that gives a about women, just historically, the people that are now like, oh, Katie Nolan doesn't care about women and women's sports. I'm like, where and where? Who gave you the ground Just because you want to be a bigot, just because you were sold this idea, this like, messaged idea that what. This, what our side of this argument, what people who stand with trans athletes want, is for men and women's sports to all be the same thing. It's like, no, what's. Where no one's saying that, right? Because we have men's leagues and women's leagues and no one has ever in this debate or in another been like, let's combine them. That's not. Not the. The point. The point is that we now better understand that there is a community of transgender people on earth, right? And now that we better understand that sports needs to figure out what it's doing to make sure they're included. Because sports are not for just men and just women. It's sports are for everybody. No matter who you identify, no matter what your race is, no matter what your gender is, it doesn't matter. It's sports's job to figure this out. And I'm annoyed that sports is getting away with going like, well, you know, the president said we have to have it this way. It's like, what's a. So what? A transgender kid who is having difficulty making friends or feeling like they fit in anywhere. We want to take away the chance for them to. The easiest way to make friends, when I was younger was sports, right? You just yet your built in friends were on Your team and I just. It just feels, like, so reactionary to not even what the reality of the situation is. And then they're so good at doing PR off of these, like, reactionary statements that then get people to go like, oh, yeah, I don't think men should compete in women's sports. Okay. Nobody's saying. No one's saying men should punch women in the face.
Ariel Elias
Right?
Katie Nolan
That's obviously crazy.
Ariel Elias
There are a few people saying that, and they were all on the last episode of Jubilee, but.
Katie Nolan
Jubilee. Since when do we have to watch all surrounded? I'm like, this is the. Every week there's a new I. I.
Ariel Elias
Will tell you, I loved watching the background of everybody because it's. It's like 20 real quick. Just like 20 people who are all under the age of 30 who are going through withdrawal over not having their phones for an hour and a half.
Katie Nolan
You see them, like, itching, and just like, yes.
Ariel Elias
You see one guy in the back just like. I don't know.
Katie Nolan
It's so funny.
Ariel Elias
As far as the. The. The. This ban also, it's like, one of the solutions, I feel like that some people have said is like, well, why not just have a league for trans athletes? And then the response is, there aren't enough in order to have a league. And you're like, okay, then why are we as a country?
Katie Nolan
Why is this front of top of the national agenda?
Ariel Elias
Why is this, like, people's whole personality arguing against this?
Katie Nolan
And it's because there's money to be made that it. I truly believe, like, ol. Riley Gaines, there's no reason I should know who that is. I should. It should be a name I've forgotten. I saw in a headline and then forgot. But instead, she's built an entire career and managed to, like, poke Simone Biles and then managed to mischaracterize what Simone Biles said back to her in order to build this support. And it's like, just watching it happen is so deflating, where you're just like, no one's seeing through that. This. No one's seeing.
Ariel Elias
I think her teammates are like. Her teammates were like, we don't. We didn't care about. About having a transgender.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Ariel Elias
Swimmer on our team. Riley Gaines just seems like the kind of person who, like, when she found out that swimmers wore drag suits, she, like, started a petition to, like, change the name. She.
Katie Nolan
No dragons swimming. She also, her reaction to Leah Thomas and tying when it happened was the complete inverse of what she does now. And that, to me, is the like, oh, somebody Talked to you and said we could really pay you to push this. You could be the poster child for this thing that gets America riled up that we're gonna exploit to try to win an election. And she was like, sounds good.
Ariel Elias
She's like, I'll put the rile in, Riley.
Katie Nolan
She's fucking sick. I'm all about gains, financial and otherwise. So good for her, I guess. Women lifting women up.
Ariel Elias
Congratulations, Riley Gaines.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, we're all very supportive of you, the Giants. Okay. How much do you care about baseball? Baseball's kind of having a moment right now.
Ariel Elias
I, as a kid cared about baseball a lot because my dad watched it so much and I just wanted him to talk to me.
Katie Nolan
Same, same. Replace dad with mom, too. And yeah, that's. I mean, I got all the way to calling baseball games. Cause I wanted my mom to have to listen. Listen to me.
Ariel Elias
Wow.
Katie Nolan
Tune in and be like, well, it's. And then she just did. But I didn't.
Ariel Elias
But I'm not up on, like, what's happening.
Katie Nolan
That's okay.
Ariel Elias
So if you want to tell me, I would love to hear the.
Katie Nolan
And the podcast listeners are sick of me probably talking about this, but this is a development in the story, so you have to tell it. The Red Sox had a player named Raphael Devers. He was our third baseman. We signed him to a long contract extension because the Red Sox have a tendency to let big stars go. And this was their make good. They signed Raphael Devers like a year or two ago to a long term contract extension. 10 or 11 years. The very next year in free agency, our fans were like, we need a free agency signing. And they signed a third baseman, which is what Raphael Devers plays. A little confusing. Nobody told him. Then after they signed this third baseman, they said, you've been replaced. We're not. You're not going to play third anymore. We just want you to bat. He's got a great bat. He's a great dh. He wasn't a very good third baseman, but he was getting better. That's what matters to me.
Ariel Elias
Is he young? Is he very young?
Katie Nolan
He's youngish, yeah. He's. He's been getting better since we've had had him since he was young. He's getting better and growing into the position. He still wasn't like a great, but he's fine. So he loses his position. He switches to dh. He doesn't love that. He wanted to play third base, but he does it. He sucks it up. A couple weeks later, the Red Sox first baseman goes down with an injury. And they ask Rafael Devers to play first base. And he's like, what's next? I was first your most paid guy, and then you signed a guy who played my position. So you disrespected me then. And then you're disrespecting me by telling me that I can only play dh. Then you're. Now you're like, when they told him to be a dh, he said, they said, put your glove away. No more glove for you. And then a week later, they're like, pick your glove up. We need you to play first base. And so he felt disrespected. I understood that. They traded him away. He went to the. To Dan's team, the San Francisco Giants. And then just last night, this is the news story. He played first base for the San Francisco Giants.
Ariel Elias
How'd he do?
Katie Nolan
He did great.
Ariel Elias
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
He went two for five at the plate. He had a double. He knocked in a run. The Giants beat the Braves 9 Nothing. That's a season long they had. They were in the middle of a losing streak, six games. And so they came out of it. And then his quote afterwards was, I felt very comfortable playing first base. This is through an interpreter. I've been practicing for a while. It's really good that I was able to get out there. But most importantly, we won the game.
Ariel Elias
When is. When do they play the Red Sox?
Katie Nolan
They did already. So the weekend after we traded him, we played them, which was crazy. And they had wanted him to take grounders at first. And he said, I don't want to piss off this. I'd like, they're gonna be here. I don't want them to see me doing it. That's kind of crazy.
Ariel Elias
He's like a sweet.
Katie Nolan
I love him.
Ariel Elias
He's like, I'm not ready to bring out my new girlfriend when my. When I'm. I know I'm gonna run into it.
Katie Nolan
Let's go easy on her. Like, she lost the breakup.
Ariel Elias
Let's.
Katie Nolan
Let's not rub it in her face. Yeah. So that's the update. And that's how I feel about. This one's kind of fun. A bunch of kids in Chicago had a set up a lemonade stand. I shocked to hear.
Ariel Elias
I can't believe we're still doing that.
Katie Nolan
Shocked to hear that's still happening. Also, there's no chance there's. They're using lemons and sugar. Correct.
Ariel Elias
It's powder.
Katie Nolan
It's a juicy country crock. It's absolutely not. Is that butter? Country crock. Does country make. Maybe country doesn't put lemonade a minute made.
Brady
Country time.
Katie Nolan
Country time.
Ariel Elias
Country time and Minute Maid.
Katie Nolan
Thank you, Country Croc.
Isabella
I know. I was like, they make lemonade, too.
Katie Nolan
I put a lot of butter in my lemonade. It's a secret.
Ariel Elias
Maybe it's like how Michelin does tires and restaurants.
Katie Nolan
Exactly. I could see it's Yamaha doing keyboards and motorcycles. Country crocked. And butter and lemonade.
Ariel Elias
Oh, Yamaha.
Katie Nolan
People forget. Don't let them forget.
Ariel Elias
And they make good saxophones.
Katie Nolan
Are you a saxophone person?
Ariel Elias
I was. Yeah.
Katie Nolan
That's cool.
Ariel Elias
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
Saxophones have a reed.
Ariel Elias
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. I was clarinet player in middle school.
Isabella
But no jam right now. Why don't.
Katie Nolan
You don't have any instruments, and that's.
Ariel Elias
The only thing stopping us otherwise.
Katie Nolan
So these kids made a lemonade stand outside of Wrigley. They wanted to raise money to get. Do you know Pete Crowe Armstrong?
Ariel Elias
No.
Katie Nolan
It's okay if you don't. They call him pca. He's like a fan favorite. Brady. You know something about him and movies that I always forget what the stat is. Can you tell us what his relationship is to the. To movies? About his mom.
Brady
His mom was the mom in Little Big league. She was Mrs. Haywood.
Ariel Elias
Oh, cool.
Brady
Petco Armstrong's mom.
Katie Nolan
Isn't that sick?
Ariel Elias
I loved Little Big League.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. Fantastic. This was his. It was spring training. He had that haircut, right? Spring training hair. God, I'm really bad at Googling. Or Google sucks now. A little bit of both, maybe.
Ariel Elias
Yeah, Google does suck now.
Katie Nolan
He had, like, this shaved head with blue stars. Bleach. Blonde hair. Of course. Of course. Finding a photo of that is not. There we go. It's like a. You know, he's like a cool guy.
Ariel Elias
Yeah, yeah. He's. He's the Dennis Rodman.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, yeah. Light of.
Ariel Elias
Just, like, always having a. Does he change the hair a lot.
Katie Nolan
Or is it always not? I feel like he's already grown this out and it doesn't look like this anymore. Right, Brady?
Brady
Yeah. It's gone.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. This was just spring training. I don't know if he does this a ton or what. I don't know. The full background. Please don't be mad.
Ariel Elias
Imagine me being mad at you for not knowing.
Katie Nolan
You're like, how do you not. How do you not know that?
Ariel Elias
I'm like, can you tell me everything that's happening right now in baseball and explain who everybody is?
Katie Nolan
You're like, what's PCA's average? Oh, let me look it up. They made this lemonade Stand to raise money to get the haircut. The kid wants to get the haircut. Oh, and they found the Cubs. Found out about. And Pete showed up to the lemonade stand and gave them the money. He was like, excuse me, I don't think you guys can be operating a business like this. And then he gave them the money, you know, took pictures with them, and then the kid went and got the haircut. Great story. Sweet. I'm trying not to rush from the cute part of it too quickly, but I watched the video, and this is probably just generational dividend. Surprise. Let me. You know what? Let me not tell you how I feel. I'll show you the video, and we'll see how you feel when you see it. So this is the video of him walking up to the lemonade stand and them seeing him for the first time. By the way, two years ago today, X became. Or Twitter became X. Isn't that crazy?
Ariel Elias
That's wild.
Katie Nolan
That shocked me when I heard that.
Ariel Elias
I got a Twitter following like, three weeks before that happened. All right, well.
Katie Nolan
Oh, that sucks.
Ariel Elias
They. They're not losing their shit nearly enough.
Katie Nolan
They sure aren't.
Ariel Elias
These jaded motherfuckers.
Katie Nolan
They sure aren't. They're just like, oh, Pete's here. Sup, Pete?
Ariel Elias
One dapped him.
Isabella
Finally he showed up.
Katie Nolan
One kid dapped him up. It's like, what do you. What, aren't you nervous? Isn't that your hero?
Ariel Elias
Or just jump.
Katie Nolan
Oh, my God. It's my. We would have reacted so embarrassingly. I would have been like, mom, pull the clip off the Internet. I can't have everybody knowing I shit myself like that.
Isabella
I think kids are just numbed out.
Katie Nolan
I think so, too. That's what alarmed me. I watched this, and I was like, like, oh. They didn't even give it. Now, it's possible that this was, like, PR involved and they had already met him, and they were like, just. The kids aren't good actors. Maybe the kid, maybe Pete walked back up to them and they pretended it was the first. I don't know the story, but what I do know is if that is the first reaction they have to him, I'm. That's one of the most. Most stark generational divides I've seen on video.
Ariel Elias
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
I'm like, that's not how kids would have reacted before.
Ariel Elias
Well, because either they don't actually care about him and don't want the haircut, and this is all just a setup by their mom or something. Or even more jaded.
Katie Nolan
That's even more jaded.
Ariel Elias
Than I was or by the Cubs or. Yeah, these kids don't know how to process anything that's happening in front of them. I think they call it the Gen Z stare.
Katie Nolan
And listen, if the Gen Z ers are staring, Gen Alpha's probably not. Not better.
Ariel Elias
I really think, like, you and I are of the. This, like, Goldilocks age, where we came of age before ChatGPT, before there was like the Internet in our hands, but also came of age after they had taken out the lead.
Katie Nolan
So true. After asbestos as a problem was addressed.
Ariel Elias
Yes. There's just 30 to 50 year olds are like, the only ones who are. Who are, like, okay mentally. Which is terrifying because we're not okay. Not at all.
Katie Nolan
All of us have some sort of depression, anxiety, OCD something.
Ariel Elias
But by comparison. But at least we know how. When. When the person that we're raising money to look like comes up to us, we know to shit our pants.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. Like fully shit. I don't see piss on anyone's. They all have gym shorts on. No one's pissing down their ass. Crazy.
Ariel Elias
Not a sweaty palm.
Katie Nolan
No one's like. No one's like, nervous. No one's. The other thing, because I just was watching a bunch of old news footage from a report from 1987. And the reason is because the brewers were on an 11 game win streak. They just lost last night, so it's over. But if they had gotten to 12, they give away free burgers at this George Webb, I think is the name of the. And the last time it happened was like 2008, but the one before that was 1987. So I was watching all this old footage and watching the way regular people react to a camera. Camera was so.
Ariel Elias
Oh, yeah.
Katie Nolan
Oh, and these kids are like. They have their angles. They like, say, like, and subscribe down barrel.
Ariel Elias
And you're like, let me grab my ring light real quick.
Katie Nolan
Like, what is this? Why are you so comfortable with this? You. Some of this is so. I don't know. I think the point of this story was just that I feel like I'm getting kind of old because that shocked me when I watched. I was like, oh, what a cute story. And then I watched the video and was like, what the. They don't even care.
Ariel Elias
Yeah. You're more shocked by the video than they are by the baseball player coming up to them.
Katie Nolan
I don't know. But the kid did go through with it and got the haircut, so I don't think his mom was like, pretending he liked him. I think he really did like him. I just think they are used to everything.
Ariel Elias
Yeah. Or like, just not knowing how to process their emotions in real time or outwardly. Everything happens internally.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Ariel Elias
I don't know. That makes me sad.
Katie Nolan
It makes me sad too. Tetanus. You love tennis.
Ariel Elias
I do love. I thought you said tetanus first.
Isabella
I thought you did too.
Katie Nolan
I know because I was like, I.
Ariel Elias
Do have my shot. Yeah.
Katie Nolan
Do I? How many years do you have to get those?
Ariel Elias
10 over 10 years.
Katie Nolan
I do think I'm due for a tennis Sean.
Isabella
I think I am too.
Katie Nolan
I'm still so afraid of needles. I'm way too old to be afraid of needles. I pass out.
Ariel Elias
Do you really?
Katie Nolan
Yes. Fully pass out. Just the thought of it. I can pass. I can make myself pass out. Over.
Ariel Elias
Okay, stop thinking about it.
Katie Nolan
When I had to get my Covid shots, I was like, gonna pass out. Which is why I got so frustrated with the anti vax movement. Cause I'm like, if any. I'm perfectly engineered to want to be on your side, and I can't. We have to get our vaccines. It's what I was told. And it has to be.
Ariel Elias
Can you do blood?
Katie Nolan
No.
Ariel Elias
Okay.
Katie Nolan
Why did you have some pints and.
Ariel Elias
Pints, baby? No, I was just curious. About what?
Katie Nolan
No, I just was gonna take a sip. Just really quickly. Venus Williams, Queen of Queens, won a singles match at age 45. She's the second oldest woman ever to do so. Who's oldest? Martina Nevratilova.
Ariel Elias
Okay. That makes sense.
Katie Nolan
At Wimbledon, 2004.
Ariel Elias
Ha.
Katie Nolan
I had the answer. It's written right in front of me. She was 47 when that happened. This is Venus's first singles victory in nearly two years. I think this is like her first match in like a. In a bunch of months. Beat Peyton Sterns, somebody who was 22 years younger than her and who is.
Ariel Elias
Like a rising star.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Ariel Elias
Peyton Sterns is a. Is a great player.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. Did you watch this match?
Ariel Elias
I didn't watch the match, but I did. I did see that it happened, and I was so happy. I've seen Venus like. Like. Cause she'll. She's still. She'll get a wild card for the U.S. open every year. And. And there's always somebody who's like, she shouldn't be getting a wild. And you're like, she's Venus.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. What are William talking about?
Ariel Elias
Who cares if she doesn't win a match? She should absolutely be there. She'll get. She. She'll sell 10 tickets, right? Let her come. It's like I will say that, like on the one hand I can, I can see people. I don't know, I worry that people might pile on Peyton Stearns of being like, isn't that embarrassing that you got beat by a 45 year old?
Katie Nolan
By Venus Williams.
Ariel Elias
Venus Williams.
Katie Nolan
By Venus Williams. Venus Williams at 45, like, obviously she's older, obviously her body's different, but it's like she's Venus Williams tennis wise. She's like, she's experienced, as expert as expert gets. If they say it takes 10,000 hours or whatever, how many fucking hours does Venus Williams have?
Ariel Elias
There's part of me that feels like I do wish Venus Williams would retire because in the same way that I think like all of the baby boomers are just like holding onto their jobs with like reaching a death nail and won't let go, there's part of me that's like, are you doing well? A little bit, girl. But on the other hand, I do really love seeing somebody who, who has been at the top of the game, has been the best in the world, who is incredibly competitive, incredibly talented, who is okay with playing at a level that is not that. There's something very comforting and reassuring and beautiful about that because you know that she really loves playing tennis, right? She just loves competing and she loves being on the court. And I don't know that there's. We often don't see that. We often see a lot of like, the pressure getting to players. We see them, you know, like the financial element of it all. Because tennis is a lot like comedy where you're either making so much money or you're living in your car. And so to just see her, she doesn't need the money, she isn't competing at the highest level, but she still just loves it. And I think that's great for the sport and to see, see it, yeah.
Katie Nolan
It'S also fascinating on like a human level of the mental because tennis is a very challenging mental sport, especially singles. Like, you're out there, it's just you, you've gotta focus and, and you know, follow the story of the match, adapt on your own. But to have to do that while also being like, I have to accept that I, my body is different than it was before. I can't go at that same time. I can't do it the same way. I have to evolve. My game has to evolve. I have to be willing to potentially lose. To be willing to potentially not be able to play at the level I'm used to is fascinating, endlessly fascinating. I say play until you're 60, please. Because if you don't. The reason I love this. I'm with you on boomers needing to let go of jobs. And I. I think there can be like multiple sides of this coin, I guess. Only there's allowed to be two signs of a coin. Unless it's like a decahedron, like a Rubik's cube. That's a word. Is that a word? I don't know, like one of those ten sided die. Isn't that a deca. The point is not that. The point is, I like when older people keep doing stuff because otherwise we're gonna be older than every athlete. I do need some athletes to stay a little older than me.
Ariel Elias
There is.
Katie Nolan
Because very soon I'm gonna drop off a cliff and go, I. I'm just watching kids. Is this a waste of my. Should I not be doing this?
Ariel Elias
Yep.
Katie Nolan
Is it weird how closely I pay attention to these children and the games they play?
Ariel Elias
When I was 16 and when I was 35, I would look at professional athletes and go, I can't believe they're doing that at my age.
Katie Nolan
Right.
Ariel Elias
And it's nice to know that I have a few more years of getting.
Katie Nolan
To the point along the same lines of this. Rich Hill is a pitcher who has pitched for. This is. He just signed with the Royals. That's his 14th team in the major leagues. He has played across Major League Baseball. He's 45 years old and he started last night for the Royals 14th team.
Ariel Elias
More like Rich over the hill.
Katie Nolan
Nice.
Ariel Elias
Thank you.
Katie Nolan
Nice. They call him Dick Mountain.
Ariel Elias
That's awesome.
Katie Nolan
Isn't that great? Dick Mountain.
Ariel Elias
That's so cool.
Katie Nolan
Pretty sick.
Ariel Elias
I want to. I want to climb Dick Mountain.
Katie Nolan
45 year old Dick Mountain. Fantastic. Became the oldest active player in baseball after the Royals selected him from aaa.
Ariel Elias
So it's like the ruck, but like for real.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, but he's been. But it's like he's played a bunch already.
Ariel Elias
Oh, okay. Okay.
Katie Nolan
So he's like a. He's like a vet that's been all over the league. If he play. If he some. I'm not saying I want the Royals to like release him or anything, but if they were to get rid of him and somebody else were to pick him up, he would set a new record for all of baseball. No one's ever played for half of the league before. It would be pretty wild.
Ariel Elias
Could they release him and then just pick him right back and it would still count?
Katie Nolan
I don't think they count the times you go back to a team you already played for. Okay, I'm pretty sure. Okay, Brady, you know better than me.
Brady
Yeah, it's 15 different teams originally. They also screw over guys who played for the Expos and the Nationals in that. So it's got to be 15. Like, not. You can't even move and count as two.
Katie Nolan
Oh, that sucks, because those are franchises that have moved to different cities, in case you didn't know or a listener didn't know. And then one last story about old people doing stuff. Still. Have you followed along on this LeBron James Drake beef at all? It's been weird, and I feel like I've only caught, like, little bits of it, But Drake and LeBron used to be friends.
Ariel Elias
Okay.
Katie Nolan
Then there's like, a video of LeBron singing along to Not Like Us Kendrick Lamars, which who wasn't singing along cannot like us.
Ariel Elias
Fun.
Katie Nolan
And ever since then, it's sort of been a feud. So Drake recently took a shot at LeBron James by.
Isabella
What's funny is like, I know what.
Katie Nolan
You'Re about to read, and it's so absurd. So I guess we should start with. Drake used to have a full body, like, tattoo of LeBron.
Ariel Elias
Okay.
Katie Nolan
But he's now covered that up.
Ariel Elias
Okay.
Katie Nolan
No longer has LeBron on his body. Now he has Shea Gilgeous Alexander, another basketball player who just won MVP this year, plays for the Thunder, and he won the championship. He's from Toronto. Specifically. He's from Canada for sure. I don't know where he's from. And he. So he covered up his LeBron tattoo with an SGA tattoo to.
Ariel Elias
That has to be difficult to do.
Katie Nolan
Painful for sure. Also didn't learn his lesson.
Ariel Elias
Yeah, Stop putting people's bodies on your body.
Katie Nolan
All we need is, like, let's get a video of SGA singing along. Then what? Then where do we go?
Isabella
How do you know if he doesn't like the song?
Katie Nolan
Right? And now you've set the precedent that, like, anybody who likes that song can't be on my arm. But this spot is reserved for a purpose.
Ariel Elias
Anybody with a cameo account has the opportunity to do the funniest thing ever right now.
Katie Nolan
Please pay. How much money do you think it would be to get a cameo from SGA?
Ariel Elias
$75.
Katie Nolan
No, it's more 200. Is he on the website? How does that even tell him to get on? Yeah, we gotta get SGA on cameo.
Ariel Elias
I'll pay for it.
Katie Nolan
All right. And then.
Ariel Elias
And I just heard about this story. That'd be so fun.
Katie Nolan
Oh, he's not on there yet, but we'll get him.
Ariel Elias
Does he have any teammates on there? Who? Could we get him in the background?
Katie Nolan
Not yet.
Ariel Elias
Okay.
Katie Nolan
Sean Avery is on here. What does anybody want from you? Yeah, that's crazy to me. To cover up a tattoo, to have a tattoo of a grown man. Cover up the tattoo of the grown man with another tattoo of another grown man man.
Ariel Elias
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
For a song that was everybody's. It was like the song of the summer.
Ariel Elias
It's really just like, just walking around saying, your dad didn't hug you.
Katie Nolan
The Los Angeles Lakers.
Isabella
You're on me forever.
Ariel Elias
Like, somebody's got to be on my arm, please.
Katie Nolan
He's enjoying his time off like most wealthy people. I assume this is Braun. He's holidaying on the French coast. LeBron James was spotted at Lagarit restaurant in Cannes.
Ariel Elias
Is that, like. Is that, like, their logarithm?
Katie Nolan
It's like lageritaville, maybe vibing heavily and singing along to the verse on Lamar's song where he calls Drake a pedophile. Okay, so they're just going back and forth. LeBron's 40 years old. Is he too old for that?
Ariel Elias
For a feud? No, you're never too old for a feud. I think feuds keep you young.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, yeah. Desperate. The Real Housewives believe that as well. I think that's what keeps them. Them. That and taking the fat from their butts and putting it in their face. I think that's what keeps them young.
Ariel Elias
Oh, yeah. Oh. As opposed to taking the fat out of their cheeks, which they do.
Katie Nolan
Is that really helping? It's making everybody look like a vampire.
Ariel Elias
You look like a skeleton. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Katie Nolan
It's not like. I don't know. It's certainly a look. It works on some. On others for, like, a year. Yeah. And then. But, like, I can't. You couldn't pay me to take fat out of my face. That's how you keep it from looking old, is you put fat in. So if you're taking out fat, that's cool for again, a year.
Ariel Elias
Right.
Katie Nolan
Maybe two. You're gonna need that.
Ariel Elias
You're gonna need it. You're gonna want it.
Katie Nolan
You're gonna want it as wet as possible up here. Pretty quickly, I go to bed. I put a lotion on my face before I go to bed that years ago, I would have thought was too thick to put on my feet. I put that on my face now before I go to sleep, because I'm like, please save all the liquid.
Ariel Elias
And then do you slug it in over that sometimes? Yeah.
Katie Nolan
Sometimes until somebody on TikTok was like, everybody who's doing that is doing it wrong. And that was enough to make me go, I shouldn't probably do that then. I don't know what I'm doing most of the time. But my theory is as long as it's wet, I think that's right.
Ariel Elias
That's right. And I'm very sweaty, so that helps too.
Katie Nolan
Perfect. You have radiant skin. It's.
Ariel Elias
It's sweat.
Katie Nolan
It's beautiful. So I dry mine. Just absorbs everything, and then I get dry patches. You know how disgusting that is? Is. If she's pitying me, I'm watching her pity me.
Ariel Elias
It's like, you know what?
Isabella
That's not my struggle.
Ariel Elias
It's. It's so comforting because you're so beautiful and, like, so smart and wonderful that I'm like, oh, she has a flaw. Thank God.
Katie Nolan
Please stop it. I just got to push a notification that Raphael Devers has hit two home runs in the game that they're currently playing. And he's up right now. Said, let's see if he hits his third home run of the game. So he's thriving.
Isabella
Yay.
Katie Nolan
He's thriving.
Ariel Elias
I'm glad.
Katie Nolan
Ariel, where do you stand on football?
Ariel Elias
I like watching men get hurt.
Katie Nolan
Wow.
Ariel Elias
I'm into it.
Katie Nolan
Beautiful, Beautiful, poetic, stunning.
Ariel Elias
I don't follow it, but I enjoy watching it.
Katie Nolan
Okay. You're from Kentucky.
Ariel Elias
Yeah. And Kentucky is interesting because there are no professional sports franchises.
Katie Nolan
Nuts about your college sports.
Ariel Elias
We get nuts about college sports, mostly basketball. I'm from Lexington, so UK football was always, like, pretty depressing. It's gotten much better in the last few years, but I've left, and it's really hard to watch the games also if you just don't have access to it. So. Basketball was everything growing up, I lived through. You know, I came of age during the Rick Pitino years. Then the betrayal of the Rick Pitino years, where he left for the. For the NBA and then went to Louisville, which was. Was horrifying, Unheard of, unheard of, disgusting. When there. There. I remember there was a scandal involving some sort of, like, textbook thing with. With the UofL players and Rick Pitino, and we just cheered. All of Lexington was so happy that day. So that. So. And then we suffered through the Tubby Smith years. It's it. It. Yes. That was my. Most of my introduction to sports was UK fanatics, which I would often join because I was desperate to fit in. And they were so tall and they looked like gazelles, and I liked Watching. I just like watching. I just like watching. I don't really care what happens. I just want to watch.
Katie Nolan
And like, it's interesting what happens.
Ariel Elias
That's.
Katie Nolan
I mean, a perfectly valid stance to have towards sports.
Ariel Elias
It's interesting and inconsequential to my life.
Katie Nolan
That's it. That's the part. Because that's like, right now, everything's consequential. Yeah. And people sometimes treat really big consequential stuff like sports. And I always find that so off putting because I'm like, this. This, like, matters in a way that's like, we shouldn't be rooting the way we are. It should be more based in, like, reason and fact. Sports. It's okay to put like your anger quote unquote, like, in the. Like to hate the opponents. Like, it's not real. It's all kind of.
Ariel Elias
It's theater.
Katie Nolan
It's theater and it's a safe place to feel.
Ariel Elias
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
I mean, and yell and yell and get excited and get disappointed. And it's like at the end of the day, it does not matter. So you can sleep at night. Like, nobody, hopefully nobody died.
Ariel Elias
Right.
Katie Nolan
But it's like your team. It really does hurt. Like, it really hurts when you lose. It really feels amazing when you win.
Ariel Elias
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. That's what kind of this whole podcast is about. It's like encouraging more people like that to call themselves, like, sports fans and not feel like they then have to know everything about everything in order to be a part of it.
Ariel Elias
Yeah. It's how I felt. I went and saw Beyonce for a Cowboy Carter.
Katie Nolan
Oh, how was it?
Ariel Elias
It's the greatest show I've ever seen in my life.
Katie Nolan
Amazing.
Ariel Elias
I don't know all the lyrics to spaghetti and I'm not gonna learn all the lyrics to spaghetti because I have, like, people in my life who I love and want to spend time with them. Instead.
Katie Nolan
I have, like, a job I have to do Y.
Ariel Elias
And so. But so being that. And there's this gatekeeping of like, Beyonce fandom. And I think sports are similar where it's like, if you don't know everything about this, then, like, you don't belong here. And I'm very much like, no, I think it's okay to just casually enjoy this and pay money to see it live and then go home and not think about it for a couple of days.
Katie Nolan
Right. It's okay to just go experience it. And I think fandoms of all types, from music to sports, would be better served to welcome those people and make them feel comfortable you don't have to cater to them. But, like, I don't think people should be going into a Beyonce concert and feeling like if they don't get a lyric right, they're being filmed and it's gonna be put on the Internet or something. Like, you're not real beehive and you're like, no, I. I just was free tonight. Had the money, like, Beyonce. I mean, what a performer. You did. Did you get dressed up?
Ariel Elias
Yeah, yeah.
Katie Nolan
Oh, you're gonna have to show me a picture of that.
Ariel Elias
And I. And I will. And I'm really glad that you asked. It's part of why I like a minor league baseball game. Because the stakes are so low.
Katie Nolan
So low.
Ariel Elias
And nobody is. I mean, there are. I'm sure there are, like, die hard Cyclones fans.
Katie Nolan
Sure.
Ariel Elias
But. But they're pretty few and far between. And so you can just go and enjoy the spectacle.
Katie Nolan
Right? You can just go and enjoy the baseball game. You don't have to go like, who is that? And what. What are they? Where. What teams was he at before? And what's. You can just go like, wow, what a hit from that guy. What a great hit. The weather's nice. I'm gonna go get nice cream.
Ariel Elias
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
And it's just like that. Okay. The. I believe the origin question of this topic was football. And my whole point of that was going to be they reported to training camp this week. And, like, you see the gravitational pull of football on sports media. Everyone's talking about it like it's being played and it's not being played for another couple months. And it's funny watching everybody go like, well, training camp started. Top eight stories today are about contracts and football.
Ariel Elias
And is that because they want to. It's sort of like seeing the bracket at the beginning of, like, a tennis tournament. You kind of want to, like, see if you can predict what's going to happen partially.
Katie Nolan
And I also think it's football's big moneymaker. Everybody loves football. It's like the big sport. And then I also think, genuinely, people just miss it. Like, when you're tuned into football like that the months between football season and ending and it starting again is long and they are dying to discuss and have football content. So I like, I do get it. But, like, we're in the midst of. We are right about to hit the trade deadline for baseball. Like, things are happening. WNBA is heating up. They're after their all star break. So it's like, very funny that we immediately go like, oh, football's here. Okay, I'LL just go talk to football then.
Ariel Elias
Hey, can I ask you a question?
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Ariel Elias
Why? Okay. We love football in this country. It's very fun. I enjoy it too.
Katie Nolan
I'm so excited to see where this is going.
Ariel Elias
Why do you think rugby has not become very popular here? Because it's a similar. It's. It's faster than football. They don't stop. They're still hitting each other. It's a similar, you know, like. Like why they don't even wear helmets. Like, we love not wearing helmets.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Ariel Elias
Why don't. Why don't we like rugby here?
Katie Nolan
I would guess, just based off of literally nothing, that it's too close to football. Maybe that, like, we already have that. I would also guess that it's not getting the, like, youth pipeline isn't leading towards rugby. It's. If you're really good at rugby, they'd probably push you towards football. I don't know. Cause I don't have kids, but that would be my best guess.
Ariel Elias
Okay. Yeah, I take that. I accept that.
Katie Nolan
Is that okay?
Isabella
I'll play some rugby.
Katie Nolan
The Women's World Cup. The Women's Rugby World cup is this year.
Isabella
Oh.
Katie Nolan
Starting in August. So that's, you know, Alana Mar.
Ariel Elias
Oh, yeah. Alana Mar.
Katie Nolan
I say her name wrong. I don't know why I do that. Yeah, she's. She'll be there.
Ariel Elias
Cool.
Katie Nolan
It's exciting. She's a little superstar.
Isabella
So they don't wear any helmets at all? Any padding?
Ariel Elias
There's an option for, like.
Katie Nolan
Don't they have, like, those, like, almost like wrestling helmets?
Ariel Elias
It looks like a. Like a kind. Like a honeycomb, like, kind of thing. It's. It's, like, slightly padded, but it does very little. And it's really only if you've, like, had a couple of concussions. They're like, maybe you shouldn't wear this.
Isabella
Just to be safe.
Katie Nolan
You might want to toss one of these.
Ariel Elias
You might want to just, like, wear a little bit.
Katie Nolan
This might be something you're interested in.
Isabella
One or two concussions was fine, but, like, we don't want three.
Katie Nolan
My brother had three. You don't want three? Oh, my God. You don't want three. From hockey. Not from sports and concussions. They really are like this. Cheerleading even has a concussion issue. So it's like, there's a lot of your brain, man. I don't think you're supposed to whip it around like that. But they do, and we are so grateful for it. Ariel lies. Remember, remind everybody where they can find you, both online and in person.
Ariel Elias
Tour dates, you mean? Yes.
Katie Nolan
No, no. Your address.
Ariel Elias

Katie Nolan
Beautiful. Oh, my God. It really is.
Ariel Elias
Yeah, it's you.
Katie Nolan
I love. You have a mask on in your picture. That's such a throwback.
Ariel Elias
I really need to update my website.
Katie Nolan
No, I love it. It's not on her. It's on her ear. But I, like. At first I was like, what the hell? I thought it was like a something about Mary situation and then realized it's a mask. You have a mask dangling from your ear?
Ariel Elias
Yeah, a little relic. It's so, you know, I'm Jewish.
Katie Nolan
All right. Big thanks to Ariel for coming by.
