Then he was like, I'm the opposite of a casual, but it's cool. I like what you do.

And I was like, what are we doing, David? What foot are we getting off on? I can't tell. Are you a liar or are you just a nice man? And we still don't know, but he's been calling in every day at the beginning of the show, and then he's our Matt Damon. We get to the end and I go, oh, no, that's right, David. Well, you'd have to define popular because I didn't know about it, but I'm excited to. Their next world tournament is the Europe Africa Championship in the Netherlands, August 17th through 23rd. That's solid research. August 2nd is the hobby horse championship happening in Alton, Michigan. These young ladies catch a lot of undeserved shit on the Internet for doing something they enjoy. It requires skill and dedication. So give them some love. Hobby horse. Is that what I think it is?

I could at least understand because if you don't know that it's happening and then you see the video is funny at first, but looking at them try to get over those jumps, it is a physical. I mean, and it's fun. Who cares? Who cares? Have fun. I am going to look up if they have to trot in a certain way. If they're like, being judged on the way that they're trotting. Not horse like enough -10, you know, like, is there like a Who's judging this? Last but not least. This is back to Kayla's email. She says, last but not least, also on August 2nd. Well, conflict of interest there. What are we going to do? We're going to do the hobby horse championship. Are we going to do the dog surfing championship in Pacifica, California? That's tough programming for the hobby horses because it's to go up against not just dogs, but dogs on a surfboard.

You know, what's interesting is after the special came out, I put that clip up again. And then suddenly I felt very different towards the clip. I had been sort of feeling like. And if you don't know, the clip is I had a beer can thrown at me while I was performing. And I.

Not to interrupt your own story of your own experience, but just to sell. Whipped.

Yeah, that was thrown hard.

Yes. And then I drank the beer.

So that's the clip that went viral. And for a long time, I had this relationship with this clip where I was grateful for everything it brought me, of course, but also was like, I think I had some resentment that one. This couple that was heckling me and threw this at me. Got to be part of my story.

And I was like, no, but like, I'm a writer. Like, I'm not a crowd work comedian anyway. Like, I'm a writer.

Didn't even think about that.

And so then once the special came out and I put the clip up again, cause I was trying desperately to get engagement, I was like, oh, I actually feel okay about this now. This is just part of it. And so that was like a nice feeling.

It's a beautiful evolution in the relationship to the clip. Cause, yes, especially because it has political themes in it. I can imagine a viral clip sometimes is like. Cause it's happened. I mean, stuff I've said has not gone as big viral. But like, when everyone's chiming in on it and it gets really political and you're like, that's not even what it's about. Watching people misunderstand the point. Watching people like mischaracterize you as a person can at first be very, like, make it go away.

Yeah. I get people who are like, I found you from this clip. But if I make a political joke, they're like, but you need to stay out of politics. And I'm like, wait, do you not know how you found me?

That doesn't make any. It never would have happened if I stayed out of politics. So anyway, it does not define you at all. I just wanted to make sure people were like, I know. I know that face from somewhere. Wasn't that the girl who chugged a giant. I can't believe there was beer left in it for you to chug.

And I don't always feel unsafe at sports. I just want to say I feel a lot safer. Because they got a CBA coming up in October, and we think it's going to get a little messy, but it's good that you've established yourself on the side of pay them more. I think that's correct. Here's again, a really, really Fun 1. The US Olympic and Paralympic Committee has effectively barred transgender women from competing in women's sports, telling the federations overseeing swimming, athletics, which is track and other sports, it has a, quote, obligation to comply with an executive order previously issued by President Donald Trump. The change, announced Monday with a qu Update on the US OPC's website and confirmed in a letter sent to national sports governing bodies, follows a similar step taken by the NCAA earlier this year. Obviously, that's college athletics. The change is noted obliquely as a detail underneath their athlete safety policy, and it references Trump's executive order, quote, keeping men out of women's sports, end quote, which he signed in February. That order, among other things, threatens to rescind all funds from organizations that allow transgender athlete participation in women's sports. Spokesperson BAS said, we have an obligation to comply with federal expectations, and our revised policy emphasizes the importance of ensuring fair and safe competition environments for women. I guess we knew this was coming.

When Trump signed that executive order, not sure why it was so high on the priority list. With all the things going on in the world. But we certainly knew this was coming. And I guess you could say them changing the rule quietly and not having a whole big thing about it might be them trying to be like, we have to do this. We don't want to do this. That would be giving them the benefit of the doubt they haven't really earned. But this is clearly becoming a thing. And I'm. I don't even know how to toss this to you. I'm curious to know your thoughts.

Well, one question. It doesn't go the other way, right? It's not banning trans men from.

[Katie Nolan]

I don't think so. Which. The last we have statistics, which, you know, this was before the NCAA ban. There were 10 documented NCAA athletes of all the athletes who identified as transgender. And even then, we didn't between if they were transgender men or transgender women. So it. It really is just about keeping transgender athletes out of women's sports. So, Yes. I don't think it goes the other way.

[Ariel Elias]

It's so wild because it's like the amount of doping scandals that have happened in the Olympics, and then the results, for the most part, were just like, well, they can't anymore perform under their country's flag. And you're like, okay, but, like, are there any actual consequences for these teams that have these systemic doping scandals? Isn't that more of a safety issue? And they're just like, no, no, no. Don't worry about it. It's fine.

Yeah. Well, we can't say Russia at the Olympics, but, you know, that's basically who they're competing for. They're not allowed to say the name. That's not really a huge. We still know it's Russia, right?

Or, like, having these very young girls in figure skating and gymnastics do these jumps that are so horrible for their body, and it's why they only compete in one Olympics. It's like, you don't care about safety. You obviously don't, because if you did, these were the thing. These would be the things that you would be putting in regulations for. Instead, you're putting it. You're mentioning swimming, which is not a contact sport.

Right.

It's one of the sports I was a swimmer through up until college, from, like, ages, like 5 through 17. It's one of the sports with the lowest injury rates because there's no contact.

It's what older people do when they want to exercise. They go. It's low impact. You get in the water. It's like what I've started to do, and it's like safe but not.

[Ariel Elias]

You know, I kept trying to do these Chloe Ting workouts, you know, and I would like destroy my knees. And then when the public pools opened again, I was like, oh, I think I could do that. I think I could do that.

[Katie Nolan]

That's what's up.

It's just me and an 80 year old leathered man shout out. But so it's just such a. It's bullshit. It's just bullshit. You don't care about women's safety or women's sport sports or women's.

Like, it's so funny, all these people who have swept in to participate in this conversation saying, we're protecting women's sports, protecting women's sports. It's like, where have you been? Like, we. You weren't at any of this stuff before. You don't care. And funny enough, looking at you and the people you associate with, you're not usually the group of people that gives a about women, just historically, the people that are now like, oh, Katie Nolan doesn't care about women and women's sports. I'm like, where and where? Who gave you the ground Just because you want to be a bigot, just because you were sold this idea, this like, messaged idea that what. This, what our side of this argument, what people who stand with trans athletes want, is for men and women's sports to all be the same thing. It's like, no, what's. Where no one's saying that, right? Because we have men's leagues and women's leagues and no one has ever in this debate or in another been like, let's combine them. That's not. Not the. The point. The point is that we now better understand that there is a community of transgender people on earth, right? And now that we better understand that sports needs to figure out what it's doing to make sure they're included. Because sports are not for just men and just women. It's sports are for everybody. No matter who you identify, no matter what your race is, no matter what your gender is, it doesn't matter. It's sports's job to figure this out. And I'm annoyed that sports is getting away with going like, well, you know, the president said we have to have it this way. It's like, what's a. So what? A transgender kid who is having difficulty making friends or feeling like they fit in anywhere. We want to take away the chance for them to. The easiest way to make friends, when I was younger was sports, right? You just yet your built in friends were on Your team and I just. It just feels, like, so reactionary to not even what the reality of the situation is. And then they're so good at doing PR off of these, like, reactionary statements that then get people to go like, oh, yeah, I don't think men should compete in women's sports. Okay. Nobody's saying. No one's saying men should punch women in the face.

That's obviously crazy.

Why is this, like, people's whole personality arguing against this?

And it's because there's money to be made that it. I truly believe, like, ol. Riley Gaines, there's no reason I should know who that is. I should. It should be a name I've forgotten. I saw in a headline and then forgot. But instead, she's built an entire career and managed to, like, poke Simone Biles and then managed to mischaracterize what Simone Biles said back to her in order to build this support. And it's like, just watching it happen is so deflating, where you're just like, no one's seeing through that. This. No one's seeing.

I think her teammates are like. Her teammates were like, we don't. We didn't care about. About having a transgender.

And that, to me, is the like, oh, somebody Talked to you and said we could really pay you to push this. He was our third baseman. We signed him to a long contract extension because the Red Sox have a tendency to let big stars go. And this was their make good. They signed Raphael Devers like a year or two ago to a long term contract extension. 10 or 11 years. The very next year in free agency, our fans were like, we need a free agency signing. And they signed a third baseman, which is what Raphael Devers plays. A little confusing. Nobody told him. Then after they signed this third baseman, they said, you've been replaced. We're not. You're not going to play third anymore. We just want you to bat. He's got a great bat. He's a great dh. He wasn't a very good third baseman, but he was getting better. That's what matters to me.

He's youngish, yeah. He's. He's been getting better since we've had had him since he was young. He's getting better and growing into the position. He still wasn't like a great, but he's fine. A couple weeks later, the Red Sox first baseman goes down with an injury. And they ask Rafael Devers to play first base. And he's like, what's next? I was first your most paid guy, and then you signed a guy who played my position. So you disrespected me then. And then you're disrespecting me by telling me that I can only play dh. Then you're. Now you're like, when they told him to be a dh, he said, they said, put your glove away. No more glove for you. And then a week later, they're like, pick your glove up. We need you to play first base. And so he felt disrespected. I understood that. They traded him away. He went to the. To Dan's team, the San Francisco Giants. And then just last night, this is the news story. He played first base for the San Francisco Giants.

It's really good that I was able to get out there. But most importantly, we won the game.

I don't know. But the kid did go through with it and got the haircut, so I don't think his mom was like, pretending he liked him. I think he really did like him. I just think they are used to everything.

It's like I will say that, like on the one hand I can, I can see people. By Venus Williams. Venus Williams at 45, like, obviously she's older, obviously her body's different, but it's like she's Venus Williams tennis wise. She's like, she's experienced, as expert as expert gets. If they say it takes 10,000 hours or whatever, how many fucking hours does Venus Williams have?

[Ariel Elias]

There's part of me that feels like I do wish Venus Williams would retire because in the same way that I think like all of the baby boomers are just like holding onto their jobs with like reaching a death nail and won't let go, there's part of me that's like, are you doing well? A little bit, girl. But on the other hand, I do really love seeing somebody who, who has been at the top of the game, has been the best in the world, who is incredibly competitive, incredibly talented, who is okay with playing at a level that is not that. There's something very comforting and reassuring and beautiful about that because you know that she really loves playing tennis, right? She just loves competing and she loves being on the court. And I don't know that there's. We often don't see that. We often see a lot of like, the pressure getting to players. We see them, you know, like the financial element of it all. Because tennis is a lot like comedy where you're either making so much money or you're living in your car. And so to just see her, she doesn't need the money, she isn't competing at the highest level, but she still just loves it. And I think that's great for the sport and to see, see it, yeah.

[Katie Nolan]

It'S also fascinating on like a human level of the mental because tennis is a very challenging mental sport, especially singles. Like, you're out there, it's just you, you've gotta focus and, and you know, follow the story of the match, adapt on your own. But to have to do that while also being like, I have to accept that I, my body is different than it was before. I can't go at that same time. I can't do it the same way. I have to evolve. My game has to evolve. I have to be willing to potentially lose. To be willing to potentially not be able to play at the level I'm used to is fascinating, endlessly fascinating. I say play until you're 60, please. Because if you don't. The reason I love this. I'm with you on boomers needing to let go of jobs. And I. I think there can be like multiple sides of this coin, I guess. Only there's allowed to be two signs of a coin. Unless it's like a decahedron, like a Rubik's cube. That's a word. Is that a word? I don't know, like one of those ten sided die. Isn't that a deca. The point is not that. The point is, I like when older people keep doing stuff because otherwise we're gonna be older than every athlete. I do need some athletes to stay a little older than me.

Because very soon I'm gonna drop off a cliff and go, I. I'm just watching kids. Is this a waste of my. Should I not be doing this?

We get nuts about college sports, mostly basketball. I'm from Lexington, so UK football was always, like, pretty depressing. It's gotten much better in the last few years, but I've left, and it's really hard to watch the games also if you just don't have access to it. So. Basketball was everything growing up, I lived through. You know, I came of age during the Rick Pitino years. Then the betrayal of the Rick Pitino years, where he left for the. For the NBA and then went to Louisville, which was. Was horrifying, Unheard of, unheard of, disgusting. When there. There. I remember there was a scandal involving some sort of, like, textbook thing with. With the UofL players and Rick Pitino, and we just cheered. All of Lexington was so happy that day. So that. So. And then we suffered through the Tubby Smith years. It's it. It. Yes. That was my. Most of my introduction to sports was UK fanatics, which I would often join because I was desperate to fit in. And they were so tall and they looked like gazelles, and I liked Watching. I just like watching. I just like watching. I don't really care what happens. I just want to watch.

And like, it's interesting what happens.

That's.

I mean, a perfectly valid stance to have towards sports.

It's interesting and inconsequential to my life.

That's it. That's the part. Because that's like, right now, everything's consequential. Yeah. And people sometimes treat really big consequential stuff like sports. And I always find that so off putting because I'm like, this. This, like, matters in a way that's like, we shouldn't be rooting the way we are. It should be more based in, like, reason and fact. Sports. It's okay to put like your anger quote unquote, like, in the. Like to hate the opponents. Like, it's not real. It's all kind of.

It's theater.

It's theater and it's a safe place to feel.

I mean, and yell and yell and get excited and get disappointed. And it's like at the end of the day, it does not matter. So you can sleep at night. Like, nobody, hopefully nobody died.

But it's like your team. It really does hurt. Like, it really hurts when you lose. It really feels amazing when you win.

It's the greatest show I've ever seen in my life.

And so. But so being that. And there's this gatekeeping of like, Beyonce fandom. And I think sports are similar where it's like, if you don't know everything about this, then, like, you don't belong here. And I'm very much like, no, I think it's okay to just casually enjoy this and pay money to see it live and then go home and not think about it for a couple of days.

Right. It's okay to just go experience it. And I think fandoms of all types, from music to sports, would be better served to welcome those people and make them feel comfortable you don't have to cater to them. But, like, I don't think people should be going into a Beyonce concert and feeling like if they don't get a lyric right, they're being filmed and it's gonna be put on the Internet or something. Like, you're not real beehive and you're like, no, I. I just was free tonight. Had the money, like, Beyonce. I mean, what a performer. You did. Did you get dressed up?

And I. And I will. And I'm really glad that you asked. It's part of why I like a minor league baseball game. Because the stakes are so low.

And it's just like that. Okay. The. I believe the origin question of this topic was football. And my whole point of that was going to be they reported to training camp this week. And, like, you see the gravitational pull of football on sports media. Everyone's talking about it like it's being played and it's not being played for another couple months. And it's funny watching everybody go like, well, training camp started. Top eight stories today are about contracts and football.

And is that because they want to. It's sort of like seeing the bracket at the beginning of, like, a tennis tournament. You kind of want to, like, see if you can predict what's going to happen partially.

[Katie Nolan]

And I also think it's football's big moneymaker. Everybody loves football. It's like the big sport. And then I also think, genuinely, people just miss it. Like, when you're tuned into football like that the months between football season and ending and it starting again is long and they are dying to discuss and have football content. So I like, I do get it. But, like, we're in the midst of. We are right about to hit the trade deadline for baseball. Like, things are happening. WNBA is heating up. They're after their all star break. So it's like, very funny that we immediately go like, oh, football's here. Okay, I'LL just go talk to football then.

Why? Okay. We love football in this country. It's very fun. I enjoy it too.

I would guess, just based off of literally nothing, that it's too close to football. Maybe that, like, we already have that. Cause I don't have kids, but that would be my best guess.
