Hello! It's the podcast that will graciously accept any stuffed animal it's handed, any time. Today, Katie and the Casualties wrap up the Winter Olympics with a look at the figure skating exhibition gala, Kung-Fu Panda, and new boundaries being pushed, before getting into Team USA's gold medal in men's ice hockey, a historic game on Sunday, and the unsettling reality of the president interjecting himself into the postgame celebration to diminish the accomplishments of the women's team. In a happier conversation, the team then takes a look [23:05] at the accomplishments of the athletes themselves, Connor Hellebuyck being unbeatable, JACKHUGHES scoring the game winner with his front tooth missing, Team USA's celebration of Johnny Gaudreau, Nathan McKinnon's performance, Nathan McKinnon's acceptance of the Olympic stuffy, Nathan McKinnon's assertion postgame that Canada was the better team, and a dramatic re-enactment of an all-time Olympic moment - Mike Tirico interview the Hughes b...

Hey, Isabella, did you see by any chance that figure skating gala?
B
I did. I saw some parts of it online.
A
What parts of it did you see?
B
Well, I saw Alyssa.
A
Great.
B
I saw Ambers where she was doing that like back.
A
Stunning. Stunning. The camera work deserves, I think, more credit than it's getting.
B
Yeah, for sure.
A
About physics wise, how is she bending like that?
B
I have no idea. I've thought of it. I tried it on my own. I'm just kidding. I didn't. In my mind I did.
A
Did you see by any chance the men's individual gold medal winning skater dress up as Kung Fu Panda? No.
B
Wait, this is not on my for you page. What should I search?
A
Honestly, I'm not sure who it's for.
B
Gold medalist.
A
Yes. And. And Kung Fu Panda. It should be the first video that comes up in a full Kung Fu Panda costume. He completed a triple. I think it's an axle. But honestly, if you can tell just by looking at it, go ahead and roast me in the comments. It's with a full fluffy costume on. And then he. But he also, at one point, farts and knocks over two other skaters with the lethalness of his fart. And I was just wondering if you ever thought you'd see something like that in what was technically officially the Olympics broadcast.
B
I did. I was gonna say figure skating is really making. They're really pushing boundaries.
A
I know, and I love that. I think this is what the closing ceremony should be. I think the closing ceremony of the Olympics should be a talent show where everybody shows us without any rules. Without any judging, no medals. They just all come out and go, okay, so I'm a cross country skier, and because of that, I learned that I can do this. And then they do whatever their weird little thing is that equals being Kung Fu Panda doing a triple axel. I watch that.
B
Be like, hey, guys, here's my trick.
A
Yeah, look what I can do. They won't let me do it on the course, but you should know that I can do it.
B
Yes.
A
Yes. Okay, cool. Make that happen. Olympics. Let's do a podcast.
C
Hello.
A
Oh, hi. Hi. We're at home. As you can see. Nothing like launching full video for your podcast just to then get hit with a gigantic blizzard in the New York City area and elsewhere. So, hi, we're at home. Sorry for the way that this looks. We are recording remotely due to a blizzard shout out to our partners at GMC and the all new 2026 GMC terrain. We are part of professional grade, but we are also staying home today and staying safe because it's just too snowy out there. But this is Casuals. Hi, welcome to Casuals, the sports podcast. It doesn't care what you know. We just think it's all about how you feel. And we're going to talk a lot of Olympic stuff today because they're over. How I feel is sad because the Olympics are over. But we're going to get to that. We have a lot of stuff to get to. I first have to give you our contact information. If you want to email us, you can do so@casualsgmail.com our voicemail. 646-801-0043. On IG and TikTok, we are CasualsThePodcast. Did I say I'm Katie Nolan? I am. And then joining me today, all via Zoom, we're all coming to you separately from our own homes. We've got the casualties, our production crew here at SiriusXM, we have our sports newbie, Isabella. Hi. Hi. We have our master editor, Chris.
C
G'.
A
Day. And. And then we've also got a buh, buh, buh, buh, buh, buh, buh, buh, buh. Brady.
D
Treacherous three inches of snow in central Maryland.
A
Yeah, I was gonna say, how is it where everyone else is? So let's go around the room and say where you are and how the snow is where you are. Start with Brady. Go.
D
Central Maryland. Three inches slushy. And my kids are still at home.
A
Oh, wow. You got the day off.
D
They did.
C
That's crazy.
A
They just want to be like us.
C
Chris, what about you in Jamestown, N.C. 0 inches. We have no snow anytime.
B
Damn.
C
No snow.
A
Wow. Wow.
B
Isabella, I'm in New Jersey and I would say I think we're like close. I don't know, 15 inches. Yeah, it's a lot.
A
Nate and Sean are my radio producers on Mad Dog Sports Radio. We do a show called Fan Service. We can call in and talk to me live every day from noon to 1 Eastern. They were telling me they. Sean said he shoveled last night and then a couple times and he still thinks there's about a foot of snow out there that he's got to get to later.
B
I didn't even bother doing shifts. I was like, I'm just going to do all of it tomorrow. I can't. I can't.
A
I know. It's. I mean, truly snow management. When we do finally get a house, Dan and I, we are not going to know how to do that because I've been completely out of practice. I just go, someone going to do the sidewalks or.
B
Yeah.
C
This last month was my first time having to deal with this because the weather in North Carolina, we've been hit with two snowstorms in the past month. This is the first time that we didn't really get hit. But my goodness, having to shovel that drive away and deal with the. The snowplows pushing snow against the base of the driveway because we're at the end of the cul de sac. So they're like pushed all the snow in front of us and like that becomes a hassle. We get like a foot, like a foot of ice as a barrier at the end of the. The driveway.
A
It's a pain. I always think about people that have those windy driveways when it comes to snow where you're like, oh, even if you had a friend with a plow, they can't really come do much about it because your driveway is kind of crazy shaped.
C
Yeah.
B
You know when my mom did the last snowstorm and I was like, that's too.
A
Your mom is so funny to me.
B
It's. I was so smart. She was like, oh, I just parked my car at the end of the driveway so I don't have to shovel most of the driveway.
C
And I was like, snow gets on top of the car and then you have to worry about the windscreen and things like that.
A
It's true.
B
What do you mean?
A
Well, cuz then you got to brush your car off. Where. Oh, do you not have a garage? So either way it was getting covered in snow.
B
Yes.
A
Yes. So she parks at the end of the driveway.
B
Yeah, yeah, yeah. So instead of parking all the way up, just parking at the end so then you don't have to shovel that much. Makes sense.
A
It does make sense. I don't miss that. I do not miss brushing off the car going, oh God, I don't have my gloves. Trying to put your sweatshirt over your hand so that you could get the ice off of your stupid windshield wipers that you left up to try to help this situation. And it all did was freeze them into gigantic icicles. God, it sucks the number of times
D
I've used a clean diaper to clean off my car just because it was what was on hand at the time.
A
Very absorbent, very functional, very absorbent. The main concern for me in New York City is you've got to worry that now the grimy subway floors, when they get really wet, they get really slippery. And we don't try to think about why that is or what that is. But if you're not conscious of it when you're going down the stairs to your subway station, you're not going to be conscious at all because you'll slip and crack your head open. It's like very slip. It doesn't really care what grip is on your shoe. You're just gonna have a tough time navigating the subway. So anyway, all of this is to say we decided not to today. We are all at home. We are safe and sound. I already got word I have to do this again for radio tomorrow. They're not letting us come into the office. So, you know, hope everybody is safe and sound wherever you're listening to this. Also reminding you that you can watch this if you want to on YouTube. YouTube.com Katie Nolan we post the full video of every episode now and we do so on, what, Wednesdays and Fridays. So a day after the audio comes out. So be sure to check that out. And I guess I'm really sorry cuz today you're going to be looking at just a zoom of the four of us. It's not visual, but it's like a
B
so totally cool zoom. Like, it's like the coolest zoom you've ever seen. Yeah. Is it?
A
I'm not using like a nice camera. I also should turn on the. Really tempted to turn on the, like blur. Make me look younger than. Just make it look like you're filming me through a cheesecloth cloth. Because it just. I go, oh, that's much nicer than all 39 years of wrinkles on her face. Hey, speaking of my wrinkles, we're not having a fun yap today. Okay? So Chris is going to do what he always does, right, Chris? And he's going to put the time code of when the rest of the podcast starts in the description of this episode. I'm even going to plea to our editor, the video editor we have now at Sirius who does our podcast, Corey, to just put a nice big time code here on the screen for when this part of the podcast is over. Because if you don't want to hear it from me, fine and acceptable, you can get to the rest of the happiness. I was so excited to do this podcast today because last week Alyssa Lou happened a figure skater I've been telling you guys about since like last year, since she made her comeback in One Worlds and and was so excited and I was feeling so empowered. I did I got to have this conversation a little bit with Pablo Pablo Torre on his podcast. Pablo Torre finds out which drops on Tuesday. So today. So there is a space where I'm able to put all the happiness that I was feeling. But of course the something happened yesterday that sort of was a punch in the gut after an Olympics where the women were heavily relied upon. The United States, in case you didn't know, did better in this Olympics than we've ever done in a Winter Olympics. We came in second place outright in both gold medals and and total medals. It's something we've never done before and a huge percentage of those were due to women. And we will get to all of those gold medals again like I said, after we deal with this and what I'm feeling right now because this is my podcast and that's I have to talk about sports. I woke up at 8am yesterday for me Sunday to watch this men's hockey game. If you know anything about me, you know that's a big deal for me. Waking up at 8 in the morning, it's something I do during the week. But to get me to do it on a Sunday, there better be a good reason. There was. I was waking up to watch the men's hockey game. The women had just won their gold again. We'll get into this a little bit more later. But the the women won in overtime in an incredibly exciting fashion. Megan Keller scored the over the winning goal in overtime after Hillary Knight tied the game up with a couple minutes left to go in regulation. She's the captain. She's retiring. When she scored that goal, she became the all time leader in goals and points for USA Hockey in the Olympics is huge. Beautiful riding that high into the men's hock game, the final against Canada. They managed to pull it off as well. An exciting game. Jack Hughes. Jack Hughes scores in overtime. Everybody is excited about that. He's interviewed after the game. I think it was Jackie Redmond who asked him what, you know, who. What were you thinking in that moment? What runs through the goal scorer's head in that moment after scoring the game winning overtime goal in the Olympics to beat Canada, our rival? And he brought up Megyn Keller. He was like, oddly enough, first person I thought of, Megyn Keller, because she just scored a overtime winning goal the other day in a game that I was watching with my brother. And Tom Brady, oddly enough, makes his way into this story. He's like. And we celebrated and we went nuts. So she's the first person I'm thinking of. And I'm like, this is amazing. This is the first time that the men and the women have both won gold in hockey at the same Olympics. It's obviously the first time in a while that the men have won gold. And everybody's talking about miracle and blah, blah, blah, blah. And then I'm, you know, I Woke up at 8 in the morning for this. I'm celebrating. Dan and I are running around the house screaming, and it's great. Then I'm watching the post game celebrations. I see Cash Patel, the head of the FBI, in the locker room, and I'm like, that's weird. But you know what? I have, listen, I'm a lady that's watched hockey. I've got no qualms about. I assumed most of the people in there don't align with me politically, and this is my own personal position. But when it comes to the Olympics and the joy and the heartbreak that come with rooting for your country, I feel like for me, if you don't agree with me politically and you're an athlete in the Olympics, I'll talk about it when you come home. You know, I'll put it aside because the access to the thing does not require that I agree with you. I can root for you as an athlete for two weeks and put all that aside. So I see Kash Patel and I'm like, okay, this is taking a turn. But listen, we don't have to agree. If you win a gold medal and want to party with the king cop, that's your choice, not one that I would make. I don't know why. Who goes like, yeah, bring the teacher to the party for sure. That sounds really fun. But hey, to each his own. I protect my own piece. You're welcome to do whatever you want. It's this. Then you see the video that they get on speakerphone with President Donald Trump. And look, I'll be completely frank and completely honest. I bookmarked this. Like, you know what I'm gonna do? I'm gonna deal with this tomorrow morning. I'll wake up and watch this video because I see the pull quotes and I see what's being attributed and. No, thank you. No, thank you. It is. We just wrap. I just watched the closing ceremonies. I'm, like, enjoying this content of this team that I'm rooting for, winning, even though I woke up at 8am to watch it. And. And if the pull quotes were to be believed, I was like, I. I don't wanna. That's gonna. I'm gonna be very upset by that. And so I watched it this morning. Bad idea. I really should have watched it last night so I could sleep on it, because now I. We're at the point where I've got to do this podcast and I'm mad. And here's the thing. My first reaction to my anger is like, this isn't going to be very palatable. This isn't going to be a very good. They're going to say, you're being sensitive. They're. They can't take a joke. They're going to say, oh, can't they make a joke? Why you got to always. Women always ruin everything. This was a moment when everybody is together. The Olympics have been a moment. I have seen so much expression online of people being like, hey, this has been nice. It has been nice to celebrate America for two weeks, to have these glimmering, incredible athletic performances represent our country instead of anything else. It's just about human greatness and the possibility when you dedicate yourself to something, when you come together as a team. That's what this two weeks has been. It has been a high of that. Additionally, I would say it's also been really nice. I saw Sarah Sivian, a woman who works in sports. She's big in the hockey space, but you may have bumped into her somewhere else. Sarah Sivian, she wrote on her substack an article called American Women Needed these Olympics. I'm halfway through it. I'm not. I'm just. It was like a. Just felt good. It just felt good to be like, wow, everybody can. You can do it. You can do it. You can defy expectations. Alyssa Liu can leave the sport because she feels burned out and pressured, and she can come back and say, no one's going to tell me what music to skate to. No one's going to tell me what clothes I have to wear. No one's going to tell me what I can and can't eat. No one's going to push me when I know I need a break. And then she wins gold on her own terms. Women's sports, especially sports like figure skating, gymnastics, have not always been like this for women. And so her coming out and doing that and doing it with joy and with unburdened freedom has been like, isabella, we talked about this last week. I think a lot of women brought that up to their therapists. It is something that may have been discussed in therapy this week, the way that their reaction to Alyssa Liu rocked them, women in general. And then she wins the goal. It's beautiful. Everybody is feeling together, supportive of each other. In spite of the unspoken thing. We're all doing our best to just kind of like, okay. And then our last gold medal. The men's hockey team wins gold. FBI directors in the locker room, whatever, still whatever. Talk to the president. And the president decides to use this moment to kick down the women's team to say, like, guess I probably gotta invite the women, too, or else they'll impeach me. First of all, let's not even touch the like, in what world does you being mean to women get you impeached? I'm pretty sure those files have a lot of instances of you being mean to women. And so far, they haven't done anything. So I don't know what this fantasy world is that you live in where if you don't do a nice thing for a woman, they'll impeach you. I'd like to live in it and listen. I see a lot of people being like, I'm done with this hockey team. I'm done with them. I thought they were on our side. I thought they were allies. I thought they were. And again, you are well within your rights to feel however you want to feel about any players. And I'm not even making an excuse to say that those guys don't feel that way. I will say, hammered, celebrating afterwards on a speakerphone call there. I. I want to give grace and space to the. I heard at least someone when he said, I guess I've got to invite the women. Someone yelled like, two for two. Someone yelled absolutely in the background. Then he says, or else I'll get impeached. And then it feels like everybody laughs. My bigger issue is with the saying of the thing because. And I'm Hoping that players, if they feel necessary, come out and say something in support of the women's hockey team. Because I just, I can understand in that moment people not being aware of what it sounds like he's saying. I think I'm most disappointed, A, in the action that had happened in the first place and B, in the reaction online of people immediately, immediately defaulting to like, wow, you can't take a joke. You can't take a joke. Instead of for one second examining what it would feel like if the president, while calling to celebrate your win, felt the need to knock the women down a peg for their win. They won as well. They beat Canada as well. They should be included because of that. And it's just been really shitty. As a woman who has been loving these last two weeks, to, in our last triumphant moment of the Olympics, be reminded of how, no, I'm not included, actually. Or if I am, it's as a joke. If I am, it's because otherwise they'll get canceled. Canceled by who? You're in charge. You're the big boss. This whole canceled, it's just, it just soured the thing. My other thing is, like, I just wish people were a little bit more discerning of like, yeah, of course they. The president wants to get in on, on your moment. People love you. He's not doing so hot right now, approval wise. So of course he wants to be a part of your celebration. I just wish more people would be like, yeah, we don't need that actually. We don't need. Thank you and we'll come see you at the. Whatever the. They're going to the State of the Union, a big speech, fun party that State of the Union. You know, I'm just like, annoyed that this happened. I'm annoyed that I could. I can't not address it because it made me feel angry. It just like, pissed me off. There was no need for this. And I would have loved. Sure, in a dream world, somebody would stand up and go like, hey, don't say that. But again, after you're celebrating your win and there's a lot going on and everybody's hammered, I don't expect that they have the presence of mind to stand up with two teeth in their mouths and say like, hey, you shouldn't talk about ladies like that. Like, of course it's. That would be great. I, I'm not saying I expect it. I just, it. This sucks. This sucks. And I think it's like, obvious that it sucks. I think that everybody should agree that a president shouldn't go like, not like those loser women who also won gold. You didn't have to mention them at all. You didn't have to bring them up at all. Even though I know. I know you like to protect women's sports. I know that was, like, a big talking point for this administration is how. How important it was for them to protect women's sports, which I guess I would say, like, who protects them from you? You know? So let me just make sure I touched on everything I wanted to say about that, because, look, I just. In an ideal world, we skip over this. In an ideal world, we're just talking about the happiness of the Olympics and the reason I put it in the yap. I know that's the beginning of giving you time codes, because I'm not trying to start this off with negativity. I know this is a podcast for casual sports fans. I just want people that are new to sports to know that, like, if something like this happens, we're not just not going to say something like, somebody will stand up for you. And that's unfortunately, sometimes it's just going to be me. But here we are. I'm sweating, I'm angry, and I would like to, if it's okay with everybody, after the break, we're just gonna talk about the Olympics positively. We're gonna talk about the positive moments, the funny moments, the heartwarming moments, the things that happened in the actual sports, and we'll just, I guess, keep our eyes on how this all develops, you know? I guess. I suppose. Did you see he. The president retruthed a video of him. AI generated slop where he's on Team USA playing hockey against Canada.
B
I just got chills.
A
I know. And not that good. Not in a good one.
D
No.
A
Yeah. Not the good ones, but definitely check. That's definitely a cool guy, you know, definitely have him around my whole thing. Listen, at the end of the day, if anything eventually ends up happening, based on all of this stuff going on right now, like, you know, we have it. We know what side you were on, and just, you know, don't be mad at people when they bring that back up to you later. Let's take a break, and when we come back, we're gonna do superlatives. We're gonna do all of our favorite moments from the Olympics. Everything that made us feel good or sad or whatever, we're gonna get into all of it because what an Olympics we had. And I don't want us to forget them anytime soon. So we're gonna take our first break and when we come back, Olympics. When you're choosing dinner, you want to know it's worth it it every time. We're talking about the Olympics. Wow, what an Olympics it was. Let's start at the end because our last gold medal was an incredibly triumphant, incredibly stressful one that was won very early. Well, I guess by the time the game was over it wasn't very early, but it started very early in the morning. On Sunday, Team USA men's hockey beat Canada hockey's mom in overtime 2 to 1. It's the first time since 1980 the United States won an Olympic gold medal in men's hockey. Jacques scored the game winner. Everybody has been annoying their spouse and or family with that this weekend. I feel like I got a lot of tweets that were like if you're not, if that's not stuck in your head, then you're not doing it right. So scored the game winner Matt Baldy that first goal. Let's, let's not gloss over that a Beautiful first goal. And I also love as a member of the. My mom was a bartender club. His mom, they had a camera at the bar that she bartends at. Watching the game live and watching them go nuts, I was like, oh my God. This content hockey son, bartender mom. That's my family. That like perfectly resonates with my family.
D
That bar look like the most fun place on earth.
A
Yeah. So that was fantastic. Kale McCarr also scored the goal for Canada. Connor Hellebuck. What a game. Wow, wow, wow. So Connor Hellebuck, Isabella has a. Had a coming into this game, a reputation for not being able to. I'm doing air quotes. Not being able to get it done in the big game because it has happened a couple times. High stress scenarios, important games. And he has not been as stellar though. He is an incredible goalie. He's been named the MVP before. He's got two of the awards they give to the best goalies. Might be three, I think two. He's a great goalie. It's just the big game has always been kind of his issue.
B
Gotcha.
A
This. That was not the case this time. He stopped 41 of 42 shots against Canada. That Canadian hockey team has to be one of forwards wise. Definitely one of the best national teams I've ever seen. An incredible. Chris, did you see people going nuts for your boy Macklin Celebrini? He was getting a lot of shine.
C
This Olympics certainly was.
A
Yeah, very exciting. He's a young player up and coming and really held his own with some of the biggest names in the NHL, if not more so. Just shown on a team full of stars. So not to give Canada too much shine since they lost, you know, but. But shout out to Macklin Celebrini, who was awesome. Kind of cool that Quinn Hughes, Jack's brother, scored the overtime winner to send them to the gold medal match. And then Jack scores the overtime winner to. And I guess Quinn said the night before, I don't know if you saw this, but that he went into his room at like midnight into. Quinn went into Jack's room and was like, are you up? And Jack was like, yeah, just dreaming about winning the. Scoring the game winner.
B
That's so cute.
A
I know. Absolutely adorable. Also, it came after a high stick in the game. He got. Took a stick to the mouth and. And if you've seen any clip of him afterwards, you don't even need me to tell you that because the evidence of it is right in the front of his face. He had like seen or heard I Mean, my goodness, he is really summing up what a hockey player is. It's like such a, you know, what is it? What's the word I'm thinking of? Stereotype of like, yeah, the hockey player with blood in his mouth and half a tooth. Also, I. People forget and they will. His stock was at like an all time low just before this because he was penalized at the end of regulation and was. It seemed like so, Isabella, when you get a penalty in hockey, you got to get off the ice.
B
Oh, and you go into that box, right?
A
Yes, that's right. You think about what you've done. But on the ice, they play without you. It's not like they bring out another guy. It's going to be let one less guy, cuz you screwed up, which gives them a huge advantage. And so he had just given the other team, Canada, a huge advantage. And then when he, you know, scored the game winner, all was forgotten. We don't have to remember that anymore because, yeah, he got it done. I also want to mention Charlie McAvoy. Nope. I haven't seen anybody talking about it. I know. Hellebuck was fantastic. There's a couple pictures of that crazy saves that he's made. There were a couple open nets. They missed that. I love Nathan McKinnon, but Charlie McAvoy made a save. He was fully in the net. A player that isn't the goalie was in the net, like blocking shots when things got a little crazy there for a second. I think that was in the third period. And he plays for the Bruins and we love him. So shout out Charlie McAvoy. It's my podcast and I can shout out anybody that I want to.
B
You can shout out Barney the dinosaur. Yeah, I'm sorry, it's not my podcast. I can't shout out.
A
Don't say just the girls. Girls are allowed to shout at anybody they want to. So shout out to Barney and Barney's little friend. Who was Barney's little friend's name? The stegosaurus.
B
Oh, I don't remember.
A
Wow.
B
I'm not even really a Barney fake fan.
A
Dude, you get one shout out, you give it to Barney.
D
That was Baby Rebecca, the other dinosaur, right?
C
Rebecca.
A
Rebecca.
C
Is that a stegosaurus? And Bonnie and friends is named Rebecca.
A
Oh, okay. Well, shout out, Becky. Shout out.
C
But this is also the good scales.
A
We love you so much. Let's talk about the Johnny Hockey tribute. First of all, Isabel, did you watch any of this game?
B
No, I'm sorry.
A
That's okay. Did you watch the women's game last week?
B
No, I saw parts of it. I'm sorry.
A
No, it's okay. It's okay. I'm only ever asking. I want you to be honest.
B
Yeah, I did watch parts of the Olympics. I just didn't see the hockey, though. I didn't see everything of everything. I'm sorry.
A
No. And that's okay.
B
Sorry.
A
I'm just gonna go away. I feel like I'm up the whole set. Corey, fix it. I don't know what's going on. I need my emotional support. Olympic stuffy. I really do. Did you see the video of them giving to the silver medal winners of the hockey game? So the losers of the game, they gave them.
B
Only gave it to the silver?
A
Well, no, they gave it to everybody. But I think that the. The people who had just lost weren't thrilled about it. Nathan McKinnon didn't look all that happy to be holding a tiny emotional support sto. He looked at it like, what the hell do you want me to do with this? And I was like, cry into it later. That's what I would do if I lost.
B
Yeah. Snuggle it.
A
I know winning a silver medal is still winning, but in the team sports, it must be tough to, like, shift into that mindset because, like, you literally just lost a game. Like, yes, you won the silver, but you lost the actual. At least when you win bronze in a team sport, you just won the game against the team that doesn't get any medals. But to lose and have to accept a medal and treat it like a win must be pretty tough. Pretty tough. One thing after the game, you wouldn't have seen then, Isabella, but that I really think you would have loved. We've told you before, I think about Johnny Hockey. Johnny Goudreau, who used to play for the Columbus Blue Jackets. And then he and his brother tragically died. They were hit by a drunk driver while they were bike riding, I believe, at their sister's wedding last summer. Was it? Or two summers ago? It had to be last summer. He. They honored him.
C
August 2024.
B
Yeah.
A
Which I guess is two. Whatever. August 2024.
C
Yeah.
B
They.
A
They brought his jersey out because he would have been on this team. He loved international hockey play. So they brought his jersey out and skated it around the ice. And then when they were taking. They were taking their team photos, and Johnny's wife and two kids were there. And it was actually his son Johnny Junior's birthday, funny enough, his golden birthday, because he was turning 2. He was turning 2, and it was 222 was the date, and they brought the two kids out on the ice and took the team picture with them while they held their dad's jersey.
C
And
A
it was really. I don't know, it's really poignant and beautiful and emotional and, you know, he was missed. His presence was missed. But what a cool thing for the team to do to make sure that his family knows they're still always going to be part of the team after the game. Nathan McKinnon from Canada said that, you know, you be the judge of who was the better team today. I've also seen since that their Coach complained about 3v3 in overtime to decide the gold medal. Because in overtime, Isabella, they take two people off the ice for both and it was three on three. And so it was, like, really intense.
B
Oh, that's cool.
A
Yeah. And I think so too. But they didn't think so because basically they were like, we are better. But they. You guys just happened to win. Which, you know, do you get to
B
pick which three players?
A
Yeah.
B
Okay. Oh, well.
A
And they.
B
Sorry.
A
And they get to change. Like, it's not like you only can send three out and everybody else goes home.
B
Yeah.
A
You can still line change and stuff, but it's.
D
Were they gonna keep removing players for further overtime periods?
A
No.
D
Just curious because if we're getting down to 2v2, 1v1, like, that's crazy.
A
Not a bad idea. I'm sure Canada wouldn't like it very much because they said basically, on paper, we were obviously the better team. And I just want to say that doesn't mean anything, unfortunately. That's why we play the games. It's kind of the coolest thing about hockey is that in the hockey post season, we see this all the time. The better team, the team on paper, that makes more sense. It doesn't always win. And that's just what it is. You got to get out there, you got to score when you get the chance, and you gotta win. And they didn't. We again, checking my notes. We did. The United States did. So unfortunately for them, this all just kind of sounds like sour grapes. And I. And I don't care. It is true. They're a very good team, Very talented. They didn't win. Right. So that's that. And congrats on the silver and the stuffy and we wish you the best. Did you guys see in the post game celebrations, Mike Tirico? Shout out Mike Tirico. During this business, he's just been stellar. Absolutely stellar. He ended that game with a really nice Speech that sort of touched on the. In a much cleaner and well written way, sort of summed up a little bit of what we touched on in the yap about how, like, no matter what's going on, this Olympics sort of brought us all together and worked towards a common goal and show that we can celebrate human excellence. And very beautiful. But throughout the Olympics, he's been doing these like, Zoom interviews, FaceTime interviews with athletes after they win back at the village or wherever they are with their family and stuff. There was one, famously with Michaela Shiffrin after she won, where she had her first espresso martini and he did one with the winners from the men's hockey team. Now, one issue that has recurred throughout this Olympics with NBC is we can't show you guys footage. It's just how it is. I'm sure you've seen at least one person online complaining that something they posted, their own video got taken down. Because the IOC is very specific and strict about who can use their video, who can even use their sound. And we are a new full video podcast. So we're not taking any risks here. We're not using photos, we're not using videos. We're just talking about it. But there was a video of Mike Tirico interviewing three stars. Connor Hellebuck, the goalie, Jack Hughes. Jack Hughes. Jack Hughes scored the game winning goal in overtime and his brother, Quinn Hughes, who everyone famously says always looks like he's seeing ghosts. Those three were interviewed by Mike Tirico on FaceTime and were so drunk. They were so. I should allege, because I don't know, I'm not taking their blood alcohol.
D
They were holding beers.
A
They seem right, but they might just be tips.
B
They might have only been on beer. One.
A
Exactly. I don't want to assign. Driving is drunk driving, but they weren't driving, so I can't say if they were drunk or not. Okay, they were. They appear to be inebriated. That's the safe way to do it. They appear to be inebriated. And I was lamenting over the fact that we can't show this video, but then I realized Mike Tirico, Connor Hellebuck, Quinn Hughes, Jacques Hughes. That's four people. One, two, three, four. Look how many we have. So we have. Chris has transcribed this clip and in an effort to show it to you without being able to show it to you, we will now reenact this for you so that it's like you experienced it as well. I'm gonna play the part of Mike Tirico. Isabella will be playing the part of Quinn Hughes. Who's playing Jack Hughes?
C
Me.
A
Okay. Chris will be playing Jack Hughes. Now, remember, it's important for the listener. Jack Hughes has about half a tooth to three quarters. I would say the range is about half a tooth to two teeth missing at the front of his mouth. So it's just something to keep in mind. I told Chris to commit to the role. I'm gonna try, and so it's.
C
That's why I'm nervous.
A
Sounds that way. Don't. It's okay, Chris. It's. We're just all gonna judge you for it.
C
Putting my acting on blast, but it's okay.
A
And then, basically, here's the thing. Connor Helbeck doesn't really say anything, so Larkin jumps in at the end, and we're gonna have Brady play the role of him. Correct?
D
Correct.
C
Yes.
A
Okay. Fantastic.
C
By the way, three times in a trophy winner, Connor Hellebuck.
A
Oh, thank you. Yeah. You said three.
C
Three.
A
Yeah. Crazy. Okay, Isabella, you said you need to get into. She's method, so we.
B
Yeah, I just have to get. I just need to get drunk for a second. Give me two seconds. Okay.
C
I'm gonna pull in Quinn into the. Into the frame here.
A
Really good. Really good. And so remember, this is. We need to commit both audio and video.
B
He looks like he has some tendrils, like, calming down from his hair.
A
Yeah. He's got money pieces, as they call them.
B
Okay, hold on.
A
Wait, you're. Everybody's feeling good?
C
Feeling good.
A
Nice. Isabella is nailing it. That's YouTube.com Katie. Here we go. I am Mike Tirico. Jack Hughes. Quinn Hughes. Connor Hellebuck. Jack, first things first. Tell us about the goal.
C
Honestly, just great. Great player to heli. Making the save on McDavid Weinski and lock and getting up the ice there. Yeah, they're just hard pressure, kind of three on three is weird, you know, like they can go one man rushes both ways. So good play by Z. Getting up the ass there. Getting the. Over to me. And obviously, puck goes in. But that's just an unbelievable team win out of us. Kind of hella buck best player in the world tonight.
A
In all seriousness, Mike Aruzioni was there. You know about the 1980 team, you know about the legacy. You've thought about being those guys. What's it like to now be those guys for USA Hockey?
C
Yeah, I mean, it's not about any single guy at all. It's about the team. It's about representing the usa. It's about all the people who helped us get there. It's about all the pep players who have come before us.
A
Us.
C
It's about all the kids that are going to come after us. And we're just. We're just so proud.
B
I mean, it's just so special. And I want to thank our troops for allowing us to play the game.
C
Number one.
A
Yeah. Yeah.
B
Thank our troops for allowing us to play the game and thank all the support back home. But very special to be a part of this group. And it's awesome. We're a gold medal. And Shadow larks.
D
I gotta say hi to Mike Tirico. Mikey, let's go, baby.
C
Number one.
A
Congratulations, Dylan Larkin. Congratulations, guys. Go have a good time on your own. Have fun. And scene. Really good stuff.
C
Good job.
A
Really good stuff. I really tried my best.
B
I tried.
A
And you did. You looked hammered, Chris. A lot of big chunks of texts there and you got through them.
C
Thank you.
A
Through them.
C
While the most acting I've done since fifth grade.
A
A little drunk.
B
That was really, I gotta say, trying to act drunk but also read a script at the same time.
A
And yet you learned you can do it. My favorite part of it was the way to Rico. I think that interview was probably supposed to be a little bit longer. I think he very quickly sized up the like, oh, that's a MC Ultra. And that's a. And so we'll just let you guys go have fun on your own. I don't. I think we should get out of this before he's thanking the drunk ones. Thanking the troops. I don't know what's going on.
D
Jack and Hellebrook double fisting mics into Connor's face like he's incapable of holding a microphone on his own.
A
Absolutely ridiculous. Shout out to them. It was very funny, Chris. I think I saw in here you said we have a voicemail related to this.
C
We do this or just about the win in general and about the jacuze of it all. This is From Stu from D.C. i
D
woke up at 5am this morning to watch the USA Men's Hockey Team win gold against Canada and our guy Jacques scoring it in overtime with a golden goal. I am curious on your thoughts about
C
the ramifications of that goal. While it was a moment of enjoyment and celebration for the U.S. side, Jack Hughes, of course, is dating Canadian Tate
D
McCrae and wondering what the ramifications of that relationship are going to have going forward. Is Tim McCray going to be exiled
C
from the family for dating the person who scored the winning goal against their
D
beloved Canadian hockey team. Thanks.
A
Love you.
D
Mean it.
A
Bye. Love you. Mean it. Bye, Stu.
B
Good question, Isabella, wasn't Tate McCray representing the US though?
A
Well, she wasn't. She was in a commercial and she got a lot of heat from it, which I believe her official respons to it was I'm Canada down or I love Canada down. It was something, but it felt like she misused the vernacular. Yeah, famously Canadian Tate McCrae dating Jacques makes a lot of sense because of the hockey connection. Until he scores that game winning goal and now it's like, ooh, do you love hockey enough that you love even when he uses his powers of hockey against you that now his hockey has brought great national sadness to the country that you claim to love and sort of abandoned at the beginning of the Olympics? O. I don't know. Another interesting dynamic. Connor Helbuk, the goalie for the United States, plays for a Canadian team. So if you're a Winnipeg jets fan, you're I assume mostly Canadian. And you've got to now root for your goalie who was the goalie that stopped you guys from winning. A lot of complicated relationship dynamics here. Isabella, would you be mad at your boyfriend if they beat. If he beat your team,
B
Would it be awful if I said no? I'd be like secretly, I'd be like, okay, good job, babe.
A
No, I think that makes sense. I think there's like a. You know, it's almost like.
B
It's almost like my loyalty to my partner overrides the loyalty to my team a little bit.
A
Yeah. And that's on a strong relationship. So I guess what we're about to find out then is how strong Tate McCrae and Jacques's little relationship is. Because I believe it's a fledgling relationship. It's at least, you know, we never know what we don't know. They might have been dating for three years and keeping it a secret, but it's a pretty relatively new relationship and we will see how it gets addressed. I wonder if she'll write a song about it.
B
I hope so.
A
Wouldn't that be something we should mention? Listen, this is the nature of this podcast. It makes it difficult to. The women won their game on Thursday, so it is last. Yes, fresh. But it is just important and I do want to make sure that it gets a mention on this podcast. Team USA women defeated Canada 2:1 in overtime. This is now the United States third Olympic gold medal thanks to Megan Keller. She plays for the Boston Fleet, by the way. Shout out. The Boston Fleet scored a back a sick goal with four. Four minutes into overtime. How did they get to overtime? Hillary Knight, the team captain who has announced she will retire, who. Who proposed to her girlfriend, another Olympian, Brittany Bow, just days before this. She scored the game tying goal on an assist from Layla Edwards, who we've talked about plenty, plenty on this podcast. And when she did that, she became the all time leader in goals and points scored for USA Hockey in the Olympics. So fantastic. Hillary Knight, who plays for the Seattle Torrent, which is a new team in the pwhl. I just want to remind everybody, PWHL action is all free on YouTube for now. So while that's still the case, you should be watching. It resumes on Thursday. Their Olympic break ends officially on Thursday. Just a quick overview of those teams because they added two this year, the Seattle Torrent and Vancouver Golden Eyes are the two new teams. And then we've got the Boston Fleet, which feature not only Megan Keller, who scored the game winning goal, but also Aaron Frankel, the Green Monster, the goalie who saw 99 shots on net in this tournament.
B
That's the Caesar salad.
A
Yeah, has the Caesar salad account and she only let two goals in out of the 99 shots on net.
B
Shout out.
A
There's also the Montreal Victoire that has Marie Philippe Poulain on it. The Canadian Star, the New York Sirens, the Ottawa Charge and the Toronto Scepters. They've got about 16 games, I think, left in their season, so you can catch all that on YouTube. Let's ride this momentum. That was awesome. The women's hockey tournament was awesome. They were dominant. And so to see all those women, you know, spread out across a league is going to be great and exciting. So tune in and find that the NHL action, I believe, starts up again on Wednesday. Pretty quick turnaround, but at least they'll be free on Tuesday. The State of the Union speech. Let's go now to our Olympic superlatives. What an exciting Olympics we had. We thought it would be a good idea to sum them all up and remind you of our favorite moments by giving out a couple superlatives. That's. Yeah, that's it. Right? That covers everything. That's the intro, pretty much. Superlatives. Okay, we're going to go ahead and start. Brady, what is our first category?
D
First category, the United States won 12 gold medals. We're going to say, what is your favorite gold medal? Favorite gold medal for the United States.
A
That's really good. Let me just run through them really quickly. There's the USA Women's hockey team. There's The USA team figure skating. People forget Ilya Malin did win a gold medal through that. Michaela Shiffrin won the world the women's slalom. Alyssa Lou won women's individual figure skating. Alana Myers Taylor won her gold finally in the monobob. Breezy Johnson won the women's downhill. Elizabeth Laemmle won the women's moguls. Jordan Stoles 1, 2. The men's hundred meter speed skating and 1500 meter speed skating. There was the men's USA Men's Ice Hockey. There was mixed team aerials. And then Alex Ferreira won the men's freestyle ski half pipe. Those are all of our gold medals. Which is your favorite?
D
I'll take it off the top. I'm going to go. Alana Myers Taylor, winning for the monobox. As a 40 year old myself, Alana at 41, taking on the golden sport that is so much like, so much raw strength, so physical. Taking it home at 41 and then embracing her kids who are both deaf and telling them in sign language what she had just done. And having that moment was incredible.
A
Yeah. Anybody else have a favorite?
C
Anyone who knows me knows how much I love slalom. So clearly my favorite gold medal was Michaela Shiffrin, who was the reason we got into this whole debacle about slalom. Slalom in the first place was an email that we got a couple of months ago talking about Mikaela Shiffrin in the lead up to the Olympics.
A
Yeah. And how many reindeer she owns.
C
How many reindeer? So we've been following Michaela Shifrin for the past couple of months. I feel like on this show and it culminated in this gold medal.
A
Is your mind blown, Isabella? Yeah.
C
Oh, you just connected the dots now.
B
Connected.
C
Oh, cool.
B
She's the reindeer.
A
Okay.
B
Well, not. She's not the reindeer, but, you know.
A
Correct.
C
Thank you for clarifying.
A
Owns them. What about you, Isabelle? You have a favorite one?
B
Yeah, I'm gonna be annoying this entire game. Alyssa Liu.
A
That's not annoying. It's annoying because it's what I wanted to pick. But that's okay. It's as we established before, it's our podcast. Right.
B
We could do whatever we want.
A
What did you love about it? You want to say anything about her?
B
Yeah, I think. Think that. I mean, one of the things that I see everybody talking about whether they were following figure skating or not is just like seeing her come back to figure skating on her own terms and kind of just really sitting in like the joy and the love for the sport and kind of seeing that obviously in her in her technicality, she's really good, but the fact that it could also be rewarded and seeing her do it and do it in the way that she wants to is something that's really inspiring. And I'm like, I don't know. I'm interested to see if how this would not only, like, impact other figure skaters, but also other athletes. Like, I wonder if other athletes in different sports would see, like, oh, like, maybe I kind of, like, want to re approach my relationship to my sport. I don't know.
A
So just beautiful. No, that makes perfect sense to me. I. I'm not saying these two things are related because we couldn't possibly know, but I will say Tara Lipinski, a former figure skater who does the announcing now for figure skating with Johnny Weird. She posted a video the day after. I think it was right after the short program that Alyssa did, but it may have been after the free skate of her back on her skates skating again. And she said something like, I just felt the itch to get back out there and get and. And skate a little bit. And in my head I was like, that feels like the Alyssa Lou effect. It feels like you watched somebody come back to it genuinely and with love and. And I think that's really beautiful. So I'm. I'm with you 100 on that and could talk about her endlessly. And like I said, I do on podcast. So I will spare you all and the time and instead just say, I'm picking USA Women's hockey as my favorite gold for all of the reasons aforementioned. Next superlative, Brady.
C
Actually, before we move on, I have one email I wanted to point out from Jason, who wanted to write in about Alyssa Lu and said I normally don't get to experience this podcast from the perspective of a casual because I'm a lifelong sports fan. However, as someone from South Florida and has never watched the Winter Olympics, I couldn't be more of a casual about anything that has to do with ice. So when you guys spoke about Alyssa Lu's gold medal performance, I paused the podcast and immediately went to watch it and oh my God, I am literally sobbing. Like, need to go blow my nose. Full face crying. I haven't had. I haven't had this with sports in like five years. And I just literally learned of this woman five minutes ago. All that to say I have a whole new appreciation for how cool this podcast is. I think back back on all the crystal clear, amazing memories I have because of sports. And I consider myself so lucky that I had a dad who showed me that it's cool that Katie is now everyone's dad.
A
I think you we could name the podcast that so called her daddy.
D
Thank you.
A
Thank you. No, that's exactly what I was hoping. Sure. I'm sure there is some people who are listening that were going like. Like, lady, I'm not going to check out figure skating, and that's fine. But the ethos of the podcast is like, you don't have to know anything. Just check it out. And to see that somebody did, and it moved them the way that I had sort of hoped is that's what the Olympics are all about. This is what this podcast is all about. That's perfect. Brady, what's our next category?
D
Let's go with most resilient performance at the 2026 Winter Olympics.
B
Okay.
A
I think I'm gonna go with Michaela Shiffrin. Just because of what she's been dealing with, the grief and the loss of her father. The last Olympics, when she did not finish three of her four races and she failed to medal, I know that this was a real, you know, in her first event, she didn't medal either. And I know this was a real bugaboo for her is getting that Olympic gold. Even though she had found success on the World cup circuit after her injuries and after the last Olympics, it still was like this was the thing she really needed to get back. And she won it so decisively by a full second and a half that it just felt really powerful and resilient. And so I'm going with Mikayla Shiffrin.
D
I'm going to take Italian skier, and we usually focus on Americans. I think this may have gone under the radar. Italian skier Federica Brignoni won the Super G, Won the gold medal in the Super G ten months after she dislocated her knee and shattered her leg. I don't want to say similar, because every injury is different. They're both horrific, but kind of like the Lindsey Vaughn story. Bouncing back, getting right up on the skis. Like, the ability to do that mentally is insane to me.
A
And to do it in where you're from in your home country is so cool. She's the one that had the cats. She had, like, a tiger, I think, on her helmet and her gloves. Yeah, I watched that run. That was sick. It was sick. In a very cool win for her. Anyone else?
C
My most resilient performance is Philippe Reimond, who's the German ski jump athlete who won gold after conquering a fear of heights.
A
Yeah.
C
Overcame a fear of heights. He Is a ski jumper.
A
Yeah.
C
That's incredible.
A
I know.
B
It is incredibly cool. There's one that I had. I don't remember the name though you guys were talking about. And I was like, I don't. No one sounds more resilient than that. The one who was like on. They were skiing and then they like flipped and then like finished still.
A
Oh, the woman in Sweden, the Swedish women's cross country relay. Ebba is her first name. I don't remember her last name. Maybe Brady can look it up while we talk about this. But she was. Yeah, they were the favorites to win that four.
C
Anderson.
A
Yeah, they were supposed to win that. And she was, I believe that the second leg and flipped over her skates. The skate broke. The guy bringing out the new ski fell onto the ski and it was like, ah, what? And then they still. Whoever did the third leg, she also, I believe, and I think EA went on to win another award, another medal later in the games. And it was a resilient performance. That's a really good one, Isabella. That's a really good pick.
B
Thank you.
A
We also have an update on Lindsay Von's injury because she obviously this is a category for her as well. She nearly lost her left leg following that crash in the women's downhill. She revealed in an Instagram post Monday the trauma from the crash led to compartment syndrome. If you've ever watched like Grey's Anatomy, you're going, whoa, that's bad. That's not good. It's when excessive pressure builds up in a muscle from bleeding or swelling. And that restricts blood flow and can lead to permanent injury if you don't treat it quickly. So basically getting the care that she did as quickly as she did was crucial because she was gonna probably lose that leg. And I will say, I assume, I've just assumed that that leg's gonna go at some point. It just is like a. She has such a willingness to push her. But it's like, I wouldn't be. Do you see all the stuff they put in it? You see the X ray photo of it where it's just like how that is so much restructuring of a leg. I honestly could never be an elite athlete athlete because one injury that causes you to reconstruct my leg and I'm like, this leg's probably done with skiing forever. But that thing inside of Lindsey Vaughn and most high level competitors brains, that's like, I think I can still do it.
D
Lindsay's saying like, thank God that her words saying that the surgeon filleted her leg Open.
A
Just yo, that is.
D
And she's saying it like, thank God, he did it. I can go ski again. Oh God.
A
I mean, can you imagine?
B
I'm scared.
A
But I still have a leg so I don't have to not ski right now. But that's what drives her and that's what makes Lindsey Vaughn Lindsey Von. So we obviously wish her all the best in her recovery. What is our next category? Brady?
D
This one's wide open. We're gonna go. Best performance at the 2026 Winter Olympics by a non athlete.
A
Okay. And can I start by saying Mike Tirico, Lindsey Zarniak, Kenny Albert, Katherine Tappan, Jackie Redmond. Who else? The Rebecca Lowe. Oh my God. Slap me on my wrist. The broadcasters for this Olympics, Lee Diffie. An incredible. Just an incredible broadcaster team. So much hard work and coordination. I'm sure a bunch of stuff fell apart behind the scenes. It did not come across in the presentation of the actual. My own. Now my only note, I guess would be in both of the overtime winning goals for both of the hockey games for women's and men's. When the overtime game winning goal was scored. They pan up to the crowd. Give me the athlete. I would like to see the celly immediately following the game time winning overtime goal to go to the crowd. I wish I. And again, that's my only note. Okay, so it's a fine note, but we've got other non athletes that had great performances. I would say. I think I would give mine to that figure skater cameraman who. Who. Because again, that gala shot of Amber Glenn was unreal. The way he was able to skate around and with her without getting in her way, without screwing up the shot was a lot. Was shocking, incredible. And I think that might be my best non athlete performance.
C
Jordan Cowan, his name is.
A
Yes.
D
That man is an athlete.
A
Yeah, well, yeah, true. So I guess technically.
C
But none of these.
A
He wasn't an athlete in the Olympic games.
B
Not in those days.
D
I'm gonna give mine to the curling ice sprayer because that man may not have been technically an athlete.
A
Cobbler pebbler.
D
That man had grace. Had grace in gliding down the curling rink rink floor. End word. And just spraying with just a. It was entrancing.
B
I'm gonna go with the ghosts that Quinn Hughes talked to because clearly. Clearly it did something, you know.
A
And you don't think the ghosts were athletes?
B
No.
A
Oh no, no, no, no, no, no, no. They were just Victorian children. Quin, you have to win. Quinn, he's like, fuck. Oh my God. I'M so scared.
D
Extending one finger, Chris.
C
Well, a follow up from the last superlative that we had is Lindsey Von's surgeon.
A
Yeah. Yes.
C
Saving her leg.
A
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Surgeon.
C
I think that's a great performance.
A
I imagine there was probably a point. You never know.
B
But as well as a physiologist.
A
Yes.
C
That whole team, the whole crew, the whole medical team that works on Lindsey Von's leg. Fantastic performance.
A
Amazing. Let's do best perform. Oh, no, wait, Brady, you're saying the categories. You say it.
D
Let's do best performance by a non human.
A
Okay. Now there's a lot of possibilities here. I, of course, am gonna pick the winner, which was Nazgul, the wolf dog who crossed the finish line during a cross country ski race. I saw Nazul. Am I saying that right? I saw their. His parents saying, like, we were on a train off to see a different event, and we were getting texts that were like, think your dog is racing at the Olympics? And they said their first thought was like, oh, there's like, nothing we can do about it. We are nowhere near that dog. Also, I didn't know you could have a dog that looked like that as your dog. That feels like that dog belongs to the earth. I didn't know that dog could just be at your house. That was a dire wolf.
D
Yeah. I immediately assumed that thing had just run out of the woods.
A
Yes. I thought it was wild.
D
Everybody was fine. I'm gonna go with. As a non human, it was a close race. I have to take the pin trading robot from the Olympic village. They had essentially a claw machine that was set up to aid in the tradition of athletes trading custom made pins with each other. If you didn't have one to give directly, you could put it in like a little egg and put it into this machine and then hit a button whether you wanted a blue egg or an orange egg. And it would. The claw machine would grab you a random one and deliver you a pin from an Olympic stranger. And it was bringing people together who may not have been brought together by language barriers or whatnot.
A
Okay.
D
It's like a good use of a robot.
A
Yeah. Pin is one of the only. Pin swapping is like a big part of Olympic culture. And. And yeah, I think this could be seen as a. As a good way of. That's neat. Cool. Anyone else?
C
For me, it's the drones. Some of these Olympic events were covered in such a unique and incredible way because of the introduction of drones. Especially, like the luge. That was the one that sort of really stood out for me is like when you. When you're. You're going down the. What do they call the track is. It's just a track. It's just a track, right?
B
Sure. Yeah.
C
You're going down the track and.
A
Thank you, Isabella.
C
And the. The drone is just following them down. You can really. You could always tell they were going quick, but really being able to follow them in the way that they did with the drones just added another level of holy when you're watching that broadcast.
A
Yeah, yeah.
B
Speaking of luge, mine is the luge sleds. Without them, that'd be very painful.
A
Yeah.
D
It's literally a while without them.
A
This is just two guys going down
B
a cold water slide on top of each other. Sounds unstable.
A
Two guys stacking up, and it's. Otherwise you're just on a carnival cruise. You know what I mean?
C
That will be fun to watch.
A
Watch. Speaking of the drones, Brady, what's our next category?
D
We're going to go with most memorable sound of the 2026 Winter Olympics.
A
And I do think the drones are a nominee because I think they were trying to lower it in prime time, so during the replays, they would try to, like, bring down that level of the. Through every single clip. That being said, we still could hear it. So let's go ahead. And in the four years between now and the next Winter Olympics, somebody should invent a really. Even as I'm saying this, I immediately thought of the bad use case where I was like, somebody come up with a completely silent drone, and I'm like, well, surely we wouldn't be using that to film the Olympics. We would use it to bomb someone's wedding. So let's go ahead and say something else. What are our other more memorable sounds? Can I pick? Mine's gonna be. That's what I'm fucking talking about. From Lou into the camera. That was great. It was great. It was beautiful and I loved it. So that's my fave.
D
I hope that's on merch already. I hope that she makes millions of dollars off that line. Yeah, I'm gonna go with one that's never going to escape me. Once I realized what the sound was. And that is in skeleton. The sound of the skeleton rider driver's head scraping across the ice. Just the helmet on ice sound as they were taking turns.
A
Yeah, it's not a good sound. Memorable others.
C
My favorite was the yelling of the teammates in curling when the stone is going down the lane and you hear everyone yelling in their native language. Fantastic.
B
Beautiful.
D
Handing a police dog yeah.
B
My favorite sound is the finger booping the stone.
A
Okay. I don't think I heard.
C
You mean the sound that you made talking about the story?
A
Do you mean when he said, like, you can off?
B
No, no, no. That was my second. That was my second favorite sound. My first favorite sound is hearing the fingertip touch the stone.
A
And we all did it. Was the fingertip touching the stone heard round the world, I believe was how I heard it described on that evening's news.
C
Yep.
A
Brady, our next category. We're wrapping these up soon. Don't worry.
D
Next category. Most romantic moment of the Winter Olympics.
A
And there were a lot. There were.
B
It's a place of love.
A
I know. It really love was.
B
I'm like, twirling my hair.
A
I'm like, it's so cute. Obviously, we've talked about Sophia Kirkby and the. How she was single in the Olympic Village and started dating a guy that flew there to. I'm still worried about her. We still need to check back in with her.
D
We can get proof that she's alive. I promise you.
A
Please. Thank you. Anyone? What were some of the other ones that stood out to you guys? Guys.
D
The one that stood out to me was probably the one that was loudest in my household was Breezy Johnson. Her fiance proposing to her with a custom made Taylor Swift lyrics box. And then Taylor jumping in on her Instagram comments was just adorable. It was. Who are we to start the alchemy ring box?
A
Oh, that's really sweet. I really like that. Also worth mentioning, she wanted to be proposed to when she was. I know. So a lot of people go, like, public proposal. It's her moment. You're proposing to her at the end of the Super G. And she was like, it's specifically what I asked for. So that makes it okay. Make sure if you're gonna propose to your girlfriend after her big moment, just make sure she wants that.
B
Yeah, absolutely.
A
That's all we're asking. Go ahead.
C
For me, it was everything. Chloe Kim and Miles Garrett, they did a bunch of very romantic things throughout the Olympics. Their Valentine celebration, you know, gushing over each other on social media. Miles Garrett writing her a poem. Can I read it?
A
Can I read part of the poem?
B
Yes, please. Do it.
A
Do it. You enrapture fools to kings and exist without a peer. Put on this earth for many things. But our love is why you're here.
B
Stop. Okay.
C
What a woodsmith.
A
Why doesn't Dan ever write me? I know. I'm like, what the.
C
Why are all his poems in a punchline? What the.
A
Where's my poem, babe?
D
Shut up.
A
Did you hear it?
C
Nope.
A
Roses are red, violets are blue. Shut up. I thought it was going to be
B
My name is Dan, and I'm here to say I love you.
A
That's the other one I'm picking. Who am I gonna pick? I'm gonna pick Hillary Knight proposing to her girlfriend. Yeah, that's cute, because I didn't. I don't think I had heard the story that her and Brittany Bow either met or really bonded. Britney Bo is a. A speed skater that they bonded in the last Olympic village. They, like, walked around the village together. And it was just such a sweet Olympic love story that then was capped by Hillary Knight proposing before their big game and then not telling her teammates. I saw a bunch of her teammates reacting with, like, she posted it on Social, and then, like, got on the bus, and we were all on the bus, and we all saw it on our feeds, and we're like, what? Like, she didn't say anything. So I just. I don't know. I thought that was a really sweet and romantic story, and it was funny. She said she was more nervous about that than the game, that that was harder to do for her than the game, which I thought was really sweet.
B
Aw. One thing I was going to add was, honestly, I just think all the little moments of, like. Of the women in. Across different sports, like, supporting each other, it just felt like, we want to talk about, like, friendship, romance. Like, I thought that was really prevalent throughout this Winter Olympics, like, after the figure skating and, like, seeing all the different girls support each other and where they placed. And I saw a video of, like, Amber Glenn, like, you know, kind of, like, helping out. I forgot the other skater's name. But, like, she, like, was really upset, and, like, she was like. Like, Amber Glenn was, like, helping the cameras kind of get out of her face. Yeah. Yeah. It was just kind of like, hey, like, give her a moment kind of thing. And I just. I don't know. I liked seeing that support all around throughout the Olympics.
A
So, yeah, same. And, like, watching, like, I don't know, Simone Biles sitting in the audience for something, or then, like, Michaela going to the hockey. And it's just like, a lot of sweet and supportive. I. I love that. I agree with that.
D
Let's wrap it here with the one that we are eligible to win. We're gonna go with best fan of the 2026 Winter Olympics.
A
And it's. It's hard not to pick us. You know, it's really hard not to pick the four of us who were putting in the work every day watching all these sports. I. I'm gonna let you guys go first, and then I. Because I feel very strongly about mine.
D
I feel very strongly about mine. I'm gonna pick Haley Winn's three older brothers. Haley Winn of the U.S. women's hockey team and her three older brothers, who are basically the kids From Happy Gilmore 2 who just dressed up in real life, dressed up in American flag costumes or overalls or eagle masks, and were loud as hell and supporting her in every possible way and the. Like, the best older brothers you could imagine for Olympic hockey.
A
Yeah. And I also loved that in the last game, they did their big reveal of what their outfit was going to be, because they were always crazy and outlandish, and they just revealed themselves in her jersey, their sister's jersey, and they were like, we want the focus on the ice. We want the focus on her. We love her, we believe in her, and she's going to win. And then they did.
D
Nice.
C
The best fan is the fan that flew all the way from the UK to Italy to go on a date with Sofia Kirkby and went on a nice, calm spa date on Valentine's Day.
A
That's a good fan.
C
That's a good fan. Flying all the way across there to go to an Airbnb just for a Valentine's Day date.
A
It's still crazy to me. I'm still not sure I can endorse.
C
Was nice and calm. That's all we know.
B
I would say whichever was the closest fan that was in front of the athletes after their performance and gave them some air conditioner. That's the best fan at the Winter Olympics.
A
You think they. Oh, you mean literally a fan.
C
I go to Isabella.
A
You fear that they were too hot at the Winter Olympics? Yeah.
B
I mean, if it's, like, still an indoor activity, I'm sure hockey players get sweaty.
A
Yes. So true. So true. You didn't want to say Snoop Dogg. The fan they sent to every single.
B
I barely saw him.
A
I feel like I barely saw him. He was everywhere. I want to give a shout out to Layla Edwards's mom. We see you. She was also doing her little fit checks before every single game. It's a very sweet relationship. I think her grandmother was also there. I'm picking the Slovak fugitive who was arrested after entering the country to cheer on his hockey team. A man that was wanted. Been wanted for, like, a decade or two. And he traveled to Italy to watch his team play, and they caught him Trying to go to this game. It's like he was like, you know what, I'm gonna go. I am gonna go. What are they gonna find me? And they did. They found him. And I believe he has to serve out like at least I think it's like an 11 month sentence. I don't remember. It just, it was probably bad stuff. So I'm not actually saying this is a good person. It's just a crazy story.
C
You are so he's a good fan. Not a good person.
A
A fan. Yeah, that you have to go. You couldn't possibly miss it. And, and he didn't even get to see it. They got to him before he got to the game. So after all that, as Karl Anthony Towns would say. Okay, that I think wraps up our Olympic coverage. It's. I'm so. I can't tell you how sad I am. I can't tell you how sad I am. I can't just turn on the TV and watch.
C
I'll make you feel a bit better after the break, Katie.
A
What's that, Chris?
C
I'll make you feel a little bit better after the, after the break. I think there's a couple of things you can look at forward to.
A
Could really be anything. Let's go ahead and hit that break and when we come back, I'm gonna feel better. We'll be right back. Olivia loves a challenge. It's why she lifts heavy weights and likes complicated recipes. But for booking her trip to Paris, Olivia chose the easy way. With Expedia, she bundled her flight with a hotel to save more. Of course she still climbs all 674 steps to the top of the Eiffel Tower. You were made to take the easy route. We were made to easily package your trip.

of the Olympics and Paralympic Games and we're back. Welcome back. Usually at this part of the podcast, Chris tells us what we can watch if we want to watch some sports this week. Chris, what do we got today?
C
Well, so I wanted to start off with an email that we got from Mike. You were talking before the break about how upset you are about the Olympics being over and I think a lot of people share that, you know, that sentiment. Every night for the last couple of weeks we've really been following these players, these teams closely, really trying to to learn as much about these different sports as we can. The good news is it starts all again in a couple of weeks with the Paralympics. We've got the same sports, the same all this sort of stuff. So I wanted to read an email from Mike who sort of shared this sentiment. He said, I have followed Katie's career with admiration and respect for years. You can tell a lot about someone by who they surround themselves with and this new phase of your career is brilliant. I'm a sports diehard and yet still make time amongst a busy life teaching amongst a busy life teaching and raising two beautiful kids with my wife. To listen to this pod, it's as smart relatable and funny as flip. Shout out to Mendoza. I write to you as I finish the Olympic boon with a humble request. The Paralympics start March 6 and feature the same feats of sport. Triumph, highs, lows, laughter, tears and community. And then some that the Olympics present. Since you all already understand how important it is to get attention, I was hoping my favorite pod could bring that energy and show some love to our Paralympians. The casual fan base will love it and you will see some you never thought possible. Please, all of you, keep being the amazing people you so clearly are. And thank you for the time.
A
Hell yeah. Mike, Good email. They start March 6th, so this we don't. We can't watch them yet. And it wouldn't make it into this week. Right. That's sometimes when you get to the end of the month and February drops off a cliff. So I don't know if like tomorrow is 3-6-6, but I don't think it is. So next week, can you put in some Paralympic events for us, Chris?
C
Absolutely.
A
Okay. And I assume those are probably going to be on Peacock mostly, but we'll keep you guys abreast and we'll keep an eye and yeah, I'm totally hyped.
B
You're right.
A
That does immediately help me feel better about the Olympics being over. Cuz when they put out that flame at the closing Olymp at the closing ceremony, I was like, no, light it again. No, I need it. How will I stop? Okay, that being said, we will be doing Paralympics next week this week. Chris, what can people watch if they want to watch some sports?
C
The first thing to watch we've got some college baseball. Later today, Tuesday, February 24th, at 4:00pm Eastern, it's Georgia State against number five Georgia Tech. And the reason why I wanted to bring up this is because we got an email from Marshall who said y' all mentioned college baseball season has started and I thought it would be remiss of me not to mention Georgia Tech and our Australian player, right fielder Will Baker from Upper Coomera, Queensland. He's had a terrific start to his sophomore season with 11 runs on 12 hits and six RBI through five games. Last year he was named to the Academic All ACC team and the ACC Academic Honor Roll studying construction science and management. So he's got both the bat and the brains. If you're looking to watch some college baseball this season, you can't go wrong with Georgia Tech Yellowjack Jackets.
B
Yeah.
A
So we'll have to tune into that to see if he will Baker. His Upper Kumara what else, Chris?
C
Perfectly done. On Saturday night we have some college basketball action. We've got number 11. This is men's college basketball. Number 11, Gonzaga against St. Mary's Saturday night, 10:30pm Even though I wrote am for some reason on the rundown, 10:30pm Eastern on ESPN. This is one of the greatest rivalries in college basketball. One of these two teams has won the West Coast Conference every year since 2009, but this is the last year that they will both be playing in the West Coast Conference because Gonzaga are moving to the PAC 12. So this is one of my favorite rivalries, being a St. Mary's fan because of the Australian pipeline that has come through there over the past 15 years. This is a matchup that I always watch. So make sure you check out this game on Saturday night. And the final thing that I want people to check out is on Sunday, March 1st at 12:00pm Eastern on Fox. We have IndyCar. The IndyCar season begins again. It's the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. Alex Palou is the guy that most people should be keeping an eye out for here. He's won for the past five championships. He races for Ganassi. Another couple of guys to keep an eye out for throughout the season. McLaren's Padawa Award. He's just a crowd favorite. He's got probably the best personality of any driver in the field. So I'm sure if you learn a little bit about IndyCar, you'll learn to love him pretty quickly. Mick Schumacher, son of Michael Schumacher, will join Rahul Letterman lanigan Racing for 2026. So he had a stint brief stint in F1, didn't quite do very well, so sort of left the scene for a little while. But now he's back in IndyCar, which is great to see. And also Felix Rosenquist and Marcus Armstrong will be the two racing for Maya Schenk, which is the SiriusXM car. So as a Sirius XM car.
A
Shut up.
C
Yeah, it'd be a risky not to mention my shank racing. So. So make sure you check out IndyCar. Indica is a lot of fun.
A
Hell yeah. Good job, Chris. Thanks for telling us all the stuff we can watch. If we want to watch some sports this week, that's it though, which means we've reached the end of our podcast. So pause for crying. Don't forget if you want to reach out to us Casuals with Katie nolan gmail.com our voicemail is 646-801-0043 on IG and TikTok. We are at casuals, the podcast. Casuals with Katie Nolan
Episode Summary: "Hockey Gold, The Elephant in the Room, and Winter Olympics Superlatives"
Date: February 24, 2026
Host: Katie Nolan
Guests: Isabella (sports newbie), Chris (master editor), Brady (production team)
Podcast by SiriusXM
This special post-Olympics episode of Casuals recaps the highlights, controversies, and memorable moments from the 2026 Winter Olympics. Host Katie Nolan and her team reflect on Team USA’s historic medal haul, dig into the joy (and drama) of Olympic hockey, dissect that headline-grabbing call from President Donald Trump, and hand out their Olympics superlatives in classic “Casuals” fashion.
While celebrating Team USA’s historic dual golds in men’s and women’s hockey, Katie addresses the viral controversy of President Trump’s congratulatory speakerphone call to the men's team.
Notable Quote (Katie, on women’s gold):
Listener Email:
“I paused the podcast and immediately went to watch [Alyssa Liu’s] gold medal performance — and oh my god, I am literally sobbing...Katie is now everyone’s dad.” – Jason (54:22)
This episode celebrates athletic excellence, team USA’s best-ever Winter Olympic performance, and moments of friendship and love—while refusing to gloss over the elephant in the room. Katie’s candor about the intersection of sports, gender, and culture makes the episode essential listening both for fans and for the Olympics’ newest “casuals.”
“We love you. We mean it.” – The Casuals team (84:29)
