The last we spoke, your Knicks were heading into game six against the Pistons. Yeah. And you were pretty stressed out about that. But they won.

And you told us that you had a little. You played a part in that win.

Oh, yeah. So I got some inspiration from our prior guest, Heidi Gardner, Shout out, where she said that she, like, wrote affirmations before games for the Chiefs. So I decided to write cute little notes to the Knicks on post it notes. And then I stuck it to my Knicks jersey that was laid nicely over my couch pillow.

Okay, so some examples. What did we write on the post?

Yeah, yeah, yeah. But, like, when I wrote that, I was kind of nervous because I was like, what if it's also kind of including the Pistons?

By everyone, I kind of mean everyone on the Knicks.

You have to specify. But I guess it worked.

It worked because we. We did well. And then last night.

[Katie Nolan]

Well, so now because the Knicks have won, they move on to the next round. And that next round just happens to be against mine and Chris's Boston Celtics. And that first game was last night. Monday evening. Yeah.

How do you guys feel?

[Katie Nolan]

You know what this is? As a new sports fan? I love. I do love.

[Isabella]

Okay, Miss, like, you did that on the very first episode of this damn show.

[Katie Nolan]

It's such a funny line to walk. Cause I think about this all the time where I'm like, you're being too mean. And then I'm like, no, we're trying to teach her the rivalry vibes. And then I'm like, when she does it to me, I really hate it. But it's like, it needs a little bit of balance.

[Isabella]

I know. I don't like it when people do it to me. This is the one thing I don't like about sports. There was a point last night where I was just like, I don't like sports. I don't want to watch it anymore.

[Katie Nolan]

Let me actually read you the text that she sent the group last night, because it's very funny. Also funny. This came after Chris asked us in our meeting. He's like, hey, do any of you guys watch the games on delay? Because I won't text the group chat. And we all were like, no. And nobody asked Chris. And then Chris watched the Game on a delay, and I think we blew it because we were all group chatting about it in our group text.

[Isabella]

So.

[Katie Nolan]

Sorry. Isabel texted, this game is stressing me out. I'm scared. This was before the fourth quarter ended. And then I think when we went to overtime, she said, I may need to write up some affirmations really quickly. Then she said, I'm scared with two exclamation points. And then when the Knicks won, she said, God is good with 3. Raise the roof hands. That's what those are, right? That's raise the roof hands.

[Isabella]

I kind of see them as like praise hands. That's why I did God is good.

[Katie Nolan]

God is the roof. Yeah.

[Isabella]

And by the way, I did end up writing something up. I put. I put a post it note specifically on the TV this time, though, so.

Okay.

It would radiate well faster than if it was on the jersey.

Well, it works.

And it said, the Knicks are so talented and so loved. That's what I did. The Knicks are so talented and loved.

And they are, are they not?

Yeah.

So talented and loved. The Celtics missed how many threes in that game? 45.

[Brady]

Yeah, they went 15 for 60. They shot at a 25% clip. No one in the history of the NBA playoffs has ever missed that many three pointers.

[Katie Nolan]

Well, it's. It's. Have that many people ever tried that many?

[Brady]

No.

[Katie Nolan]

That's right. Okay, so you miss 100% of the shots you try to take, I think is what they say. And we came pretty close to that. Yes, we did, if that's the thing.

[Isabella]

Also, it was nice to finally see what Joe Missoula looks like.

[Katie Nolan]

You. Oh, yeah.

[Brady]

Oh, this is your first time.

[Katie Nolan]

I was.

[Isabella]

I was watching too. I was like, joe Missoula. They always talk about him. That's what he looks like. I didn't know. Like, he looks young.

[Katie Nolan]

Yeah.

[Isabella]

I just always imagine, like, coaches to be older.

[Brady]

The young Pope, he is extremely Catholic.

[Katie Nolan]

What is the. What. What's. When's. The next game?

[Brady]

Wednesday. Next game is Tomorrow night at 7pm I'd expect the Celtics to come out firing in this one. They had a long layover from that Orlando series. They were coming off a long break, and there's always that rest versus Russ, NBA fans, rest versus rust. And whether that played any part in the fact that the Celtics came out and couldn't hit any shots whatsoever, whereas the Knicks, who I think were coming off two less days rest, were able to come in and, you know, play really good defense. You know, Brunson came out in the Fourth and just went absolutely nuts, which we were expecting him to do. But I don't know how much of that rest versus rust comes into this equation. Poisingus only played 13 minutes in this one, but that's sort of what you expect for poisonous. Like you can't really rely on him to be a consistent factor in these series. So I wouldn't use that as a, you know, as an excuse or anything like that. But the Celtics are historically good three point shooting team. You can't expect them to go and only shoot 25% of their threes at any game throughout the rest of the series. So this is probably that one game where, you know, they probably went in maybe a little bit too cocky and, you know, relied on the three ball a little bit too much because they had an opportunity to really attack the rim. They were attacking the rim quite regularly in that first half. They got a lot of Knicks players in foul trouble. I think Brunson had like four fouls pretty early, was in foul trouble early, and maybe Cat as well. And they decided not to make the most of that. They didn't attacked the rim the way they should be doing. They just relied on the threes and no one could hit him. And that's what happens. And still, regardless of the fact that they missed 45 threes, they still took the game to OT.

[Katie Nolan]

Crazy. It's. I. I didn't think we had enough time in a game to miss that many threes and still have a decent game. So. Yes, hopefully, as you texted after you watched it, Chris, hopefully the Celtics will come out on fire next game. Tough to drop the first one at home. Not what you want to see, but. But don't rest on your laurels, Isabella. We're coming for you.

Like, that's my. I gravitate to LeBron because he graduated high school the same year. Like, yeah, I'll root for the old guy in the series.

He's still playing some good basketball as well. But at least this brings up, like, a lot of spice. In the NBA playoffs. We mentioned in the first round, even though we had, you know that. That Clippers Nugget series go to seven games. The rest of the series were just sort of nothing a little bit. But the Celtics dropped their first game. The Cleveland Cavaliers, who were the 1 seed in the east, dropped their first game.

[Katie Nolan]

And to who were the Cavaliers playing?

[Brady]

Paces.

[Katie Nolan]

That's right.

[Brady]

Indiana paces.

[Katie Nolan]

Yep.

[Brady]

And then the OKC Thunder, who were the 1 seed in the west, also lost their first game.

[Katie Nolan]

Okay. And I'm. I don't know if we've. Just to refresh everyone's memory, I'm married to the Denver Nuggets. That's. I'm married into that fandom. That was a stress full game and an incre. An incredible ending. Just a crazy. The noises that came from the other room when Dan was watching that game. Because the late games. If it's a Celtics game, I'll watch it. If it's not, it's on my laptop and I'm playing video games. I can't. Not sacrificing my night to watch the Nuggets Unless it's like the finals. But they were down for most of that game and it wasn't close. And then they really closed it up in the fourth quarter and got it done. And I was like, I'm so happy for you. My team couldn't quite. But I'm so happy for you.

[Brady]

Aaron. Aaron Gordon draining the three pointer with less than three seconds left. They finished the game on a 154 run. They really got it done when it mattered. Also, Nicola Jokic just finished with the casual 42 points and 22 rebounds, which is some monster numbers from the Joker.

[Katie Nolan]

And what are. What's the rest of the matchups for this second round? Just to set the scene for our fans at home.

[Brady]

I'll tell you if you'd like. We've got the warriors and the Timberwolves. Another series. That game one will be tonight because tonight is Tuesday. And then we also have. That's it.

That's it, right? I think we did. There would be four, right?

Yes, correct. Yeah, I'm just terrible at math.

No, same. When it comes to the playoffs, it always feels like there's like supposed to be a little bit more. It gets the. The field gets narrow quicker than you remember. Yeah.

[Brady]

Yeah. So Timberwolves and Warriors.

[Katie Nolan]

All right, so we'll look forward to those. We'll also put a bow on the first round of the NHL playoffs. Here's how we'll do that. We had our guests on DJ and Pete and they gave us predictions. And what I'll say that I found fascinating is they got everything right. There were two series where they split and one of them got one right and one of them got the other right. Which to me means that these two are a perfect team. It's why they're a pair. It's why we love them. So Dallas, very exciting. Dallas beat Colorado that final game. They were down going into the third period and they scored four goals in the third period and won in Dallas. It was thrilling. It was Miko Rant and who used to play for Colorado. So there was. He scored. He had a hatrick in the third period. One of them was an empty net goal. So just have to say that as a little asterisk. But an amazing end to that series. Dallas comes out of there. The Golden Knights beat the Minnesota Wild. The Edmonton Oilers beat the Los Angeles Kings. Again. Again. It's insane how many years in a row those Kings fans have had to deal with being beaten by the Oilers in the Toronto Ottawa series. Toronto won. Ottawa lost. Devastating. Florida Panthers. Isabella's Florida Panthers beat the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Washington Capitals beat the Montreal Canadiens. Les Habitual and the Carolina Hurricanes beat the New Jersey Devils. We knew that one already. That was already locked. But the series that got Chris to text me about hockey was Winnipeg St. Louis. Chris set the scene.

[Brady]

We're in a Game 7, which in itself incredible to watch Game 7 in the NHL playoffs at any round.

[Jake]

Should we put dramatic music behind this? Yes, Some sort of stock. I feel like Chris is cranking this up.

[Brady]

You've just added another 10 minutes to my edit insert here. The Blues are up by two goals with less than three minutes remaining in Winnipeg. In Winnipeg. And Winnipeg, being down by two goals, decide to pull their goalie so they can bring on an extra skater. And they score to bring the margin within one goal, right? So in the last two and a half minutes or whatever it was, they're a goal down, they again pull out their goalie and in the last 15 seconds, they're just like peppering it at the goals, peppering it. Just trying to get any sort of look possible to see if they can get any luck with getting a deflection or getting it past the goalie, whatever they can do. With 1.6 seconds left on the clock, they score to take the game to ot. It is the latest goal, the latest game tying goal in NHL post season history.

Crazy.

[Brady]

It was incredible. The building went absolutely berserk. And then to cap it off, they ended up winning it with 4 minutes left, 5 minutes left in OT. So it was an incredibly long game, but an electrifying end to an incredible game. And it just goes to show how fun postseason hockey is because even though a team was up by two goals, anything can happen. Anything can happen. And it did happen with 1.6 seconds left. They just like, it was a Hail Mary shot at the goal and it went through and it was. Man, it was a lot of fun.

Yeah, the crazy thing about hockey, I mean, there's a number of crazy things, but it's. It really. It doesn't take that many seconds to actually score a goal. So at any time, anything can really happen. Whereas what's interesting about basketball is like at any moment you can really go on a run if you're down by a lot. But somebody would really have to like, string together a run of points in order for it to close a deficit. Whereas in hockey, I feel like it's so like, you never know. Never rest. The theme of this podcast today is rest on your laurels. It comes up quite a bit. But yeah, hockey keeps you on your toes. And then sudden death overtime is just one of the best things that exists, I think, in Sports. Sorry to St. Louis Blues fans. That must really suck.

Really, really had to suck. But again, my brother and dad were at a Bruins Blues game when the Bruins were gonna win the cup and they lost in Boston and St. Louis, like, skated around with the cup. I actually. So I turned on the Vogue live stream on YouTube. That one I actually found was boring because all you hear is just the paparazzi yelling, look at me.

Right. And then I wasn't really liking the interviews that much, so I watched the E1, where at least with that one, you could just hear them talking about the outfits in the background, which is more entertaining.

Yes. And shout out Maria Taylor, who was the host of that We Love Her. The theme this year was super fine tailoring, black style. And then also, I think, like a separate. It was, like, tailored for you. So those were the possible themes. I'm always big on. I'm. I'm an adherent to rules. If you tell me there's a theme, I'd like you to try to meet the theme. Diana Ross didn't care about the theme. And she's probably the only person that I'm like, that's okay. You don't have to worry about the theme. Everybody else, if you're not on theme, you're losing points from me. I don't know. Call me old fashioned, call me by the book, but I thought that it was an interesting theme. I. There was a lot of repurposed tuxedo. There was a lot of pinstriping. There was a lot of, like, a new take on, you know. But then there was also some people who took the tailored to you. Did you see Wednesday, who plays Jenna Ortega's dress was made out of, like, measuring tape measure. I thought I would hate, like, metal. She looked fantastic. A very, you know, interesting take on the.

It looked really cool. Yeah, I don't. Yeah, it was just like, they had it shaped where it was. Like, they had literally, like, the loop that would typically go around your neck above her.

It's tough because in years past, it's tough to go and do the Met Gala after years when the theme was, like, camp, because we got to the point where we were seeing wild stuff. Like, Jared Leto one year brought, like, a head to the. To the red carpet of himself. And so it's like, to go from that to then everybody just wearing, like, a nice dress. There were moments where I was like, give me more. And I had to keep reminding myself that, like, that's not. It's not always about that, like, the costumey aspect of it. So I kept trying to remind myself that throughout the night. But I will say the. The athletes in attendance, I could have. I didn't. I didn't feel great about. I wasn't like, yes, that's amazing. Like, I. You know, Simone Biles and Jonathan Owens were there. I do think it's very funny now. Shout out to Jonathan Owens at any time he does an interview. He. He lifts up Simone Biles and praises her, because famously, that podcast where he was like, I didn't even know who she was. And everybody was like, excuse me, she's the prize.

So now he's. It seems as though he's heard and learned and grown. I love that for him. But I didn't love Simone's dress. But again, I don't know anything about fashion, so I'm not gonna. You don't have to partake in that if you don't want to. But my best dressed. I think, you know, I really liked Kerry Washington, even though I'm. I'm against. I'm over the sheer everything, the being able to see people's underpants through their dress. I think we've been doing that for five years now, and I'm over it. But Kerry Washington did it in a way I really, surprisingly, I really liked. But I think my best dressed is Coco Jones. She was. Came out early in the night. It was when I was still watching the broadcast, so maybe I'm just biased, but it was just perfectly tailored. It was very intricate, and she just looked stunning in it. I loved that look. It's tough. I think I'm just the first one that I remember. I was like, I liked this. The entire look together was honestly, Dochis. I know a lot of people were like. And then a bunch of people were like, that was it. But, like, I liked it. I liked the. The flaunting of, like, the. The brand on, like, the suit and, like, the shorts. Yeah, it was suit shorts.

The. The coming out of the hotel in a big box to hide your look. I get it. It's just the event itself is a red carpet, so cameras should not be. This is a hot take. Get the cameras away from the hotels. Let the poor people leave their hotel. Well, they're not poor people. They spent quite a bit of money on the ticket to go to the event. But, like, let them leave the hotel without spoiling what their outfit's going to be.

The Conclave starts on Wednesday, tomorrow, which is when all the cardinals gather in the Sistine Chapel. They lock themselves in there. They're not allowed to come out until they pick a new Pope. And so odds makers have been releasing odds for who is most likely to become Pope. And as a casual sports fan podcast, it's kind of part of our ethos that I often say it's tough to get into something without a rooting interest. So the way that the Conclave works, for all of you casual fans out there who didn't see it, there are a few key elements that shape a cardinal's chance for the. Are we saying papacy, or is it now papacy? I don't know how to pronounce it now.

[Katie Nolan]

I think it's.

[Brady]

Is it still papacy? Because the, the word that you said before made me very confused, but I would still say papacy.

[Katie Nolan]

Papabile is the word you're thinking of.

[Brady]

So papacy. Yeah, the papa, the chances for the papacy. Age is a big thing. So recent history shows preference for candidates in their late 60s, early 70s. Health, physical and mental stamina is obviously very important. And church politics. So a candidate's theological stance matters, so does the relationship. If we have a look at Myra Greck, he's 68, so he's the perfect age bracket. Good combination of experience, youthful exuberance, your typical high ceiling sophomore type. Your typical, you know, sophomore coming out of. Out of, you know, college. Right. So he's at the right age level. And the average life expectancy of Maltese men is 81.69. So he's, you know, got a good, good another, what, 12 plus year window. And the average length of the Papacy is normally seven and a half years, so you've got, like, a good lifespan there. He has no known health issues, and we all know the best ability is availability.

[Katie Nolan]

That's right.

[Brady]

So that's good for him and the church politics. He began his career quite conservatively, but since 2020, he served as the Secretary General of the Synod of Bishops. In this capacity, he was Pope Francis point person organizing and overseeing the synod meetings that took place in Rome every couple of years. And he was responsible for putting synodality, which is the efforts to make the church more welcome and inclusive, at the heart of Pope Francis's reform agenda.

[Katie Nolan]

So he's cycled the ball around.

[Brady]

Yeah. He's become an outspoken defender of migrants during Malta's migrant and refugee crisis in 2014 and 15. He, like, gave this talk where he surprised many observers by his welcoming and positive language on LGBTQ Catholics. So he wants to welcome a lot of people into the church, including LGBTQ Catholics.

[Katie Nolan]

You got there, you landed the plane.

And look, putting it bluntly, no cardinal being considered for pope represents cindality efforts more than Grec. If a lot of cardinals out there want to continue on with that pro Pope Francis agenda, Mario Grec is your man.

I think so. I think so. When I think of the Maltese, I don't think of cardinals. I think of falcons.

I know that that's hacky just because the Vatican City as a country is located within Italy, but it's, it's, that's my culture. And like I said, pizza bola was out. So my choice, Matteo zupi. Matteo Zuppi, 69 year old Archbishop of Bologna. Been the Archbishop since 2015. He was a Cardinal since 2019. Pope Francis, May he rest in the most peace, made Zupi the cardinal. So there's a connection there. Matteo Zupi has opposed right wing populism, nationalism and anti immigrant beliefs. He emphasizes Europe's moral duty to welcome migrants. He is the fifth of six children of a journalist. I just, I don't know why I find that fascinating, but I think that's an interesting fun little fact. He helped end the civil war in Mozambique in 1992. And now I know your first reaction to that might be like, okay, was that helpful to the people in Mozambique or did he come in and sort of impose some sort of a. No. He was made an honorary citizen by the people of Mozambique because of all the help that he gave to their country. And then the next year, in 1993, he went to Turkey to try to secure the release of two Italian tourists who were being held by Kurdish rebels. This guy is boots on the ground. He's in there solving conflict, mediating conflict, which is what I want my pope to be able to do. He was Pope Francis personal peace envoy and he defended in 2024 the Fiducia Supplicans, which I know we all know what that is. But that was the thing that Francis got a lot of heat for where he said that same sex marriages are allowed to be blessed by Catholic priests. And my guy Zuppy Zupi to pope was like, I agree. He's also not against making priest celibacy optional, which I think is very progressive for the church and would maybe be helpful in certain areas. And his motto, I looked up his motto and a lot of people had the same motto, which I thought was kind of wild, but not my guy. Matteo Zupi's motto is the joy of the Lord is your strength. And I agree with. I agree with that. My pick is Matteo Zupi and his odds, he's plus 500. And then lastly, you guys, I won a War Zone. I've never won a War Zone before, and I won it over the weekend. It's a big deal to me. Okay? It was a quads and I want it. I've been playing Warzone, I mean, on and off, because I'm no good at Warzone. I'm more of a multiplayer Call of Duty gal. So I walked in and I was hoping it would just be like, you know, we're baseball, but some of us like the Yankee. But it was a lot of.

There was an instant, like, Yankees, you kind of kicked in for a little bit that it was like you might have to fight your way out.

Yeah.

I started sizing people.

Which I like that energy.

I looked around and I was like, okay, I'll fight. I'll start with the two girls.

And then the rest of the men.

A lot of Mets fans, they try to act like they're a bigger group than they are, but they're not.

[Katie Nolan]

Yeah. Is that. I'm. I'm always fascinated by everybody's individual opinion on being a fan of a team that's got two teams in the city. If you root for the other, when yours is knocked out. Or if you think that's. That's blasphemy.

[Chris]

I wouldn't now due to the Soto stuff, because I. That is annoying. And. But in the past, like in when it was Harvey and deGrom and they were all the young pitchers in 2015. Was it. Yeah. I was rooting for the Mets then. Like, that's fun for the city, I think. Yankees. It's very big brother. Yankees fans will say yes, and Mets fans will say absolutely not.

[Jimmy]

Yeah.

[Katie Nolan]

Because rooting for you guys is really hard. That's why. Rooting for the Yankees is a difficult task.

[Chris]

Not some years.

[Jimmy]

Have you ever.

[Katie Nolan]

No, no.

I know. I know it's a dumb question, but I don't know.

It's. It's like it's gotten in the way professionally how much I hate the Yankees. I can't take it off. It's.

Like, that's kind of the elephant in the room.

Yankees used to win a lot.

If I can't see, that's the part I'm not about. Right.

I'm a fan of that aspect.

No, because what happened was I did that. That fever dream year in baseball and worked like, had to coordinate with the actual team and they sucked then, too. So it's just reinforced for me, top to bottom. Not a fan.

[Chris]

Yeah. When I moved to California, I got. How would I phrase this? A soft spot for all of northeast baseball fans and the passion around it. So when the AL east was like the Blue Jays and the Rays were good, I was like, this is awful.

[Katie Nolan]

Yeah.

[Chris]

And I don't think it's good for anybody.

[Katie Nolan]

Right. Agree.

[Chris]

So I like when the Yankees and the Red Sox are good. I would never root for the Red Sox to be better than the Yankees.

[Katie Nolan]

Right.

[Chris]

But when the Yankees are first place, the Red Sox are last, that's not as fun for me.

[Katie Nolan]

What about when the Red Sox are first place in the Yankees are last?

[Chris]

I don't like that hard pass.

[Katie Nolan]

I mean, truly. I. I guess I'm agreeing with you on that. Not going to say I like the Yankees to be good, but it is fun when there's. When it's competitive.

[Chris]

We were in Connecticut. Jake's from Connecticut his whole life. I lived there for two years in high school in 03 and 04. So our hallways were like rivalry hallways in High school, like, kids were painted their face red for Red Sox. That was the Pedro years, was freshman, sophomore year.

[Katie Nolan]

Yeah.

[Chris]

And like, it went to, like, the high school. Like, they were chanting in the hallways, like, let's go Red Sox, let's go Yankees. I was like, this is awesome. Awesome.

[Katie Nolan]

Yeah.

[Chris]

I moved to California and there was kind of none of like, that passion about sports because they're like, the weather's nice. Let's go outside.

[Katie Nolan]

Yeah.

[Chris]

I was like, this is.

[Katie Nolan]

And then after that, they got like a bunch of football teams. That's what always fascinated me when they all the influx of sports to a city that spends their time outside.

[Jimmy]

Right.

[Chris]

Yeah. Then the Giants got good. I moved back, and everyone was a Giants fan.

[Katie Nolan]

Yeah.

[Chris]

And there was no more Ace fans.

[Katie Nolan]

And like, the bum. Was that the bum Garner time?

[Chris]

Yeah.

Yeah, yeah. That was fun. Something you said made me. Oh, yeah. That's like the rest stops in Connecticut when you pull over, and they're always like, Yankees and Red Sox stuff.

All right, let's. Then let's skip the highway talk. Don't get fired up. You guys brought. Look, what you're really, really good at is baseball. Internet. You guys are like the number one stop. If somebody wants to get into baseball, see what happened in baseball, they go to you. So I told you to bring. To try to convince our fans or get our fans caught up on what's been going on in baseball, because it's also post season basketball, postseason hockey. There's a lot going on people might have missed. I wanted you to bring your five most viral moments of the 2025 season so far.

Yeah, I think we have some on there that are good for new fans that just like, just give me surface level entertainment.

And then there's some that's like, this is the deeper weeds of what's interesting about the sport. So you throw one at me and we'll. I'll. We'll.

So that's just a brawl, which I think interests surface level people. Because there's fighting in baseball.

In a different way than any other sport has. Because everyone runs from the dugout. Like in hockey, it's sanctioned.

[Katie Nolan]

Right.

[Chris]

Allowed in football, it's scary because they have helmets and you're like, I don't want to watch this.

[Katie Nolan]

Yeah.

[Chris]

And baseball, it's, it's, it's, it's similar to basketball more where it's like nothing. But there's even more nuance because it's always like a batter and pitcher yelling and everyone that runs out has no idea what's going on.

[Katie Nolan]

Yeah.

[Chris]

That was Lopez threw out in McCutcheon's head. He says not on purpose, but it was, it was probably on purpose because they hit a home run off him, which I don't know if any other sport has that. You did good off me, so now I'm going to hurt you.

[Katie Nolan]

Yeah. Is that you like that?

[Chris]

I like the entertainment of it. I don't like guys getting hit in the head.

[Katie Nolan]

Yeah. But scary.

[Chris]

Yeah. I think it's very silly that baseball promotes that and talks about it. And like when something like that happens, it makes all the highlights and they push the highlights.

[Katie Nolan]

Right.

[Chris]

And they also find the players like, well, that's a little backwards. You're kind of using this as like flagship entertainment of your product.

[Katie Nolan]

Right?

[Chris]

Also finding the players.

[Jimmy]

Michael K. Who calls your Yankees. He was. And we, we're, we're starting to get older. Michael K. Dropped. He was like the bullpen shouldn't come out for fights. Like kind of how the NBA banned the benches being able to come on the court.

[Katie Nolan]

Right.

[Jimmy]

And no offense, Caser, he's been like super awesome to us to him though. But yeah, no, like it's so entertaining. Like seeing, seeing the 36 year old journeyman like bullpen guy who just joined the team last week run out of the bullpen to fight. For what?

[Katie Nolan]

For what?

[Jimmy]

For what army?

[Katie Nolan]

There's no way they even know what the necessarily is the gist of it. And what I wonder is why don't they ever fight out there?

[Jimmy]

Right?

[Chris]

That's what I. They should just.

[Katie Nolan]

When the bullpens egg like you know, come out from the outfield, why don't they ever meet in like center field and have their own melee? Why do they feel they've got to come all the way, run next to each other? It's like when you're leaving a restaurant and you say bye to someone and then you're walking the same way. It's like why not just have your fight out there instead of having to run alongside one another to join a fight?

[Chris]

Was it that. There was a video I just did where I. The bullpens emptied and they were. It was. No, it was the Yankees and the Orioles. Orioles. And they're waiting at the door. They're like in line to leave the bullpen door together.

[Katie Nolan]

Very cordial.

[Chris]

And then run down. And then they just walk back laughing.

[Katie Nolan]

Strange.

[Chris]

But that was a big one. Because anytime a guy gets a ball thrown near his head, that is scary.

[Jimmy]

I think they have to stay off the radar, though, because, like, if an actual bullpen brawl broke out.

[Katie Nolan]

Yeah.

[Jimmy]

Now that's like. Okay, do we have to do something about this happen Fair.

[Katie Nolan]

When? Like the 20s.

[Chris]

No. 1998 was a big one. That's like the biggest one where it was me.

That Pedro situation. Tanya Sturts came from the bullpen and he started throwing punches.

Yeah. Sometimes there's a reliever that's like the biggest hothead. Because they're just bored, right?

They're not doing. They're just sitting there.

You know, or to get really close to your neighbors. Okay. Your second most viral moment. Pitcher blows kiss to opponent, then regrets it. What happened here?

This is. We're good at what we kind of. This didn't get talked about anywhere else, but we were told about it. So that's kind of what we can bring to life sometimes with the videos is this picture for the Twins was doing all these antics. He blew a kiss to the runner on second, who had a lead.

[Katie Nolan]

And then who are they playing? Do you know the Royals?

[Chris]

It was Melendez on second, and he was like checking on him to make sure he's not taking a big lead and blew him a kiss. And then through the pitch, gave up a hit immediately. Yeah. And then later on, a guy bunted on the same pitcher, got a hit. The next time that guy comes up, the pitcher goes to him. Bunt. They gave him the sign like, are you gonna bun? First pitch homer.

[Katie Nolan]

What do you do that for?

[Chris]

It's just thinks he's can do that, but he can't.

[Katie Nolan]

But he already had learned that game that he can't.

[Chris]

Yeah.

[Katie Nolan]

And then you do it again.

[Chris]

Yeah. He's got a long name, so he's got a lot of work. Like a lot of making up to do. Simeon, Woods. Richardson. You have that name. You have an edge.

[Katie Nolan]

Yeah. You have to.

Yeah. You know what? This one's happening a lot. I have another video coming out today. The same exact thing. So this, this is something that I think if you're. Even if you watch baseball every day, you might not like, notice this stuff.

But when the runner's on second, he can see the pitcher's hands. So he'll do a signal to the batter to let him know what pitch is coming. And Cal Raleigh was doing. Doing that by what arm was hanging. So like one arm was on his hand and this right arm was hanging down. And that meant fastball. And then this one meant slider. And then it just happened again with the Giants and the. Who was it? And the. And the Padres. And this video is coming out where another catcher was on second, Patrick Bailey.

[Katie Nolan]

Yeah.

[Chris]

And his signal was pull the chest for fastball and touch the helmet for curveball.

[Katie Nolan]

Who figures this out? Who goes, oh, I can tell he's bunching up his jersey.

[Chris]

The Pitching coach. So, like, all the pitchers that are not playing that day, their job is to watch for this. That's what I've learned talking to players now that we've gotten into this is like, no. When you're not playing, your job is to watch for all the shenanigans that could possibly be going on.

[Jimmy]

And there's guys that are, like, famous for being good at it. Carlos Beltran, I believe, and sucks that he got tied into the bad sign ceiling scandal, but he was, like, notorious for, like, he could figure out, like, whatever the pitcher was doing.

[Chris]

Yeah. That Blue Jays team with Josh Donaldson and Joey Batista. Who else was over there at the.

[Jimmy]

Edwin.

[Chris]

Edwin was over there. We're all really good at. If a pitcher had a tell. And we talked to another guy who was, like, part of that lineup, and he was like, yeah, they could always see it. And then they'd tell me, and I'd get in the box and be like, what am I looking for?

[Jimmy]

And I get out and. Yeah. It's funny when the different form of athletes get involved, because there's the guys that, like, feed off that.

[Katie Nolan]

Yeah.

[Jimmy]

They're like, give me. Give me more information. Like, if. Even if it's wrong. And then there's other guys that are like. Because if you get it wrong that one time.

[Katie Nolan]

Yeah.

[Jimmy]

And it's like, oh, slap the right knee. It's a curveball, and they throw a fastball. A lot of athletes, you just.

[Katie Nolan]

Yeah.

[Jimmy]

You're gone.

You've lost your whole competitive edge.

It's a. It's absolutely a part of the game. It's an impossible thing to call yourself a baseball fan and not realize that this has always been.

At every level, a part of the game.

But, like, when I talk to players about pitchers tipping, they're like, every pitcher tips. It's just a matter if you can figure it out, find it, and react in time. We're like, I'll. Like, last night, Pavetta, I was watching at home and I figured out his thing and I posted and people are like, you're just rewinding this. I'm like, no. They're like, it doesn't happen this often. Well, you talk to big league players like, yeah. No, it does.

[Katie Nolan]

Like, yeah.

[Chris]

And it's people's jobs to find it all the time.

[Katie Nolan]

They're just mad that you do it out loud.

[Chris]

Yes.

[Katie Nolan]

Because you're sort of letting people know what the tip is and is that why they're mad at you? Because you're like, yeah, yeah.

[Jimmy]

Credibility.

[Katie Nolan]

The Internet's.

[Chris]

But it's also, yeah, we're in a cool spot now where players will message.

Me, like, and sit and be mad or message you to ask you to.

Tell me that it's happening. There was one with Devin Williams and Pete Alonzo, big one in the playoffs last year. And before Alonzo hit the home run, we were. I try not to be. I'm trying to get off my phone. The. The screen time notifications that I've been getting have been alarming. The Sunday notification, that's like, last week you averaged. The number is too close to 10 for me to be comfortable. So I'm actively trying to do it less. Does that mean I am doing it less? No, but I'm trying to do it less. I would say. I like to. I'm trying to Read while I watch a baseball game.

I used to do that.

[Katie Nolan]

I can only do that during, like, the day games because there's just like one game on. And so it's not like trying to follow multiple games at once. But yeah, it's usually phone or I'm like, tidying up or like, cooking or something. Yeah. But I love baseball. I am trying to tell people that don't think they like baseball, that if you are looking for something that's like, second screen, you don't have to fully. Like, you can. You can fully pay attention to it, but you can also watch it in a way that's like, look up when you hear that noise, watch the action and go back to whatever you're doing. It's perfect for that.

Do you ever have it on the TV or like, you're a screen in a different room and then you're washing your hands, you're doing the dishes, and you think you hear the announcers start yelling, so you go run the check. But it's not. It's like phantom home run call.

[Katie Nolan]

Or it's like a commercial where they're playing a highlight from a different game and the announcer and you run in and you're like, I wish they wouldn't do this.

I get got by the, like, the phantom home run call. Like, I'll just hear Michael K. Start talking louder.

I'll be like, it's happening.

It's not something that we've been trying to pitch, but we haven't been able to package it the right way is. And you can get involved in this.

Is that we also think as a part of that, people are supposed to kind of lose baseball for a little bit. Like your college years. You kind of. Unless you're a baseball heart, like, you're already in. That's fine.

But, like, you shouldn't be watching from 18 to 22, three hours of baseball every night through your summers.

You're busy doing other stuff, growing, making mistakes, high schoolers.

So we almost need a, like, entering the real world baseball, like, entry pack. But also, maybe I don't want baseball to be associated with that because that can be a negative connotation too. Like, this is my life now.

But there's something there.

Yeah. My whole thing is, like, I feel that way about a lot of sports is I think people, if they're honest with themselves, come and go in seasons where they're like, oh, I was going through a big, like, basketball phase, or I was going through a big and So I think one of the issues, one of the reasons I wanted to do this podcast, because I think getting back into some of these things, a lot of the media is made for the people that are already in. And it's harder to be like, how do I dip my toe back in? I want to get back into baseball, but where do I start? Consumable goal of this?

[Chris]

Yeah, you know, I like it. Casuals baseball has this thing where the media always reports like there was just an article out that was like, Gen Z says they're not going to watch baseball, but Gen X is doubling down. It's like, like they're, they're losing the, the youth. It's like, no, Gen X didn't watch when they were 20 either.

[Katie Nolan]

Right.

[Chris]

When you get a 9 to 5 and you come home at 7 and you're just looking to melt on the couch, that's when you watch a lot of baseball. I'm always my, always my point to mlb. Whenever people ask me, like, what would you do? I'm like, just get young people to play baseball and watch the highlights and enjoy it. So it's not so much a learning curve when you're older to figure out the games and the strategies and all that where they do a good job. Because every little kid plays baseball enough to where you know the basics of the rules.

So when you want to start watching, you can. But yeah, we don't need 14 year olds watching baseball every single night. It's not like over the summer.

He's the last person before the field. So a little situational awareness. You might think this ball is probably in play, possibly being caught by a player, but he kind of goes for it and then rips it out of Trout's glove.

And then the look on his face when he kind of realizes is the.

Best part is the Astros, right?

They're playing the Astros.

Yes. So this. This is one that anyone. Like, this is the most surface level. If you just want to be entertaining, trained.

And it's an element of baseball that isn't in any other sports besides golf, where the spectator can, like, get in the way.

I was trying to think basketball kind of. They sit very close to the action, but rarely do they get.

Like, this is a ball that. Yeah. I think those. And this is another thing that baseball kind of fights. Like, they could very easily make a barrier and not allow the fans to reach over, but it's also awesome.

The other thing with baseball is each stadium is different. Like Wrigley, the foul line goes literally against a brick wall that I guess I'm trying to. Because the basketball comparison is interesting to me, but it's all the same. And there's people on the sidelines that, you know, if a loose ball is going the side, there's going to be something happening here with. With a. The fans have no clue. A guy sees a ball coming at him, he's with his kid. Like, I'm gonna get this ball for my kid.

[Katie Nolan]

Yeah.

He said he was protecting his kid.

[Katie Nolan]

Yeah.

I would say that as well. If I screwed up, that Would be my number one go to.

You see that every now and then where they'll like, you know, do the thing where they take it and they toss it into the crowd. And then someone's like, that was fair ball. And I saw that happen this year. And what stood out to me was the ball boys reaction was like, no, it wasn't.

And they're people were like, yes, it was. The umps are meeting now because they have to discuss what to do with what you've done. That was in plane. He's like. He pointed and was like, no, the ball. What it wasn't. And just. That is not the reaction. That's a younger generation reaction. That's like, this is a you problem, right?

But you mentioned Aaron Judge. Historic start. He has not only taken his 2024 AL MVP form into 2025. He may be exceeding it. How so?

Judge it. Well for anyone. Yeah. If you don't follow baseball, what baseball has become is a sluggers like paradise. So. Meaning if you hit home runs, you usually don't have a good batting average.

[Katie Nolan]

Yeah.

[Chris]

And Judge is saying I'm going to hit the most home runs and also have a really good batting average. So his batting average is.400, which is incredible. Usually you, you tank, you know, contact for power just because he's really big and strong. So he is like, he doesn't have to swing that hard to hit home runs.

[Katie Nolan]

Yeah.

[Chris]

Kind of crazy.

[Jimmy]

He has. He has a track record of every year kind of improving one thing. It's kind of like his Dexter, like there was. It was blown away sliders. And then one year he kind of went in the lab and stopped doing that. And then I think the next year is like, change up splitters, went in the lab, stopped doing that. That. Yeah. He just continues to get better after kind of being the best. And. Yeah. There's just a weird kind of mental. He's so big and so New York City and Yankees brand and shield that it's like, oh, he hits the most home runs, big guy. But he really is the best at like hitting for contact, which is insane.

Yeah.

And he's got two triples this year.

Now, a lot of times a thing that will help you get into a sport is having a rooting interest. And most people will choose their rooting interest based off of the city that they're in. Yes, that's the easiest way. You live in Boston. You root for the Red Sox. But I wanted to take a different angle and consider other things that might help people unlock the team that's best for them to root for. Because if you're gonna choose, if you're entering in for the first time, why not choose something that lines up with you as a person? And so that got me thinking about horoscopes. Now, everybody, most people know their sign in terms of, you know, that's. I believe your sun sign is like, I'm an Aquarius. You're what?

But I remember the. With the Braves a couple years ago, the narrative was that they were getting all these deals on guys they really liked.
