Hello! It’s the podcast that will forever hold a grudge against Jeffrey Maier. Today, Katie opens up the floor for Producer Isabella to vent about her beloved Knicks losing in the Eastern Conference Finals to the Pacers, before touching on the end of “Inside the NBA” that’s not really the end at all, the passing of “Sports Science” host John Brenkus, Luke Littler’s loss in the Premier League Darts final, the cockiest spelling bee contestant of all time, and celebratory fires in Paris. Then, Boston's-own Jared Carrabis (39:50), host of Baseball is Dead and Section 10, joins Katie for a special live show from the WBUR Festival in Boston that was recorded on Saturday afternoon to talk through all things Boston sports, the fledgling Colorado Rockies, potholes across Boston and more.

You know, summer isn't just for playing sports. It's for the conversations around sports too. You know, the casual hangouts, whether they're inside in the air conditioning or out on the beach with fellow sports fans. Whatever kind of summer mood you're in, Starbucks has a beverage to match. Like the Summer Berry Refresher, the unofficial drink of the summer. It's so good. It's sweet, but not too sweet. It's three berry flavors and it's everything I never would have thought I wanted, but absolutely do want. It's perfect for sipping while you catch up on last night's scores. No matter what, whether it's that drink or one of their other summer drinks, your summer favorites are ready at Starbucks.

Katie Nolan
Loans originated by Sofi Bank NA member FDIC terms and conditions apply. NMLS 696891 hey Isabella, are you okay?
Isabella
No, but I think I will be. I had to soft launch my pain to myself like maybe at the end of game four. And then when we won game five, I was like, I, why did they do this to me? They gave me some hope and I was like, you know, maybe they can do it. Maybe they could, you know, and they didn't. Yeah, but it's okay. It's fine. You know what's been helping me is like tick tock edits. The like the ones that like, they're just like showing flashes of like Brunson and Mikel Bridges and all the, all the guys throughout the seasons with the fun music and I'm like, yeah, you.
Katie Nolan
Know, remember the good times. Yeah. Forget the bad times. Exactly where you lost the Knicks.
Isabella
Why you have to say it like that?
Katie Nolan
The Knicks lost. Let's start the podcast. Hi, welcome to Casuals, the sports podcast that rules if I do say so myself. Who's myself? Well, that's me, your host, Katie Nolan, joined today by the casualties. We've got Isabella, we have Chris, we have Brady. We're all remote. I'm coming to you from my parents basement. So if I sound immature or emotional, it's because when you go back to your parents house, you, you become who you were back then. So that's. Blame it on that. It's not my fault. It's all about the setting. If you want to reach us, you can email us Casuals with Katie nolan gmail.com our voicemail is 646-801-0043. On IG and tick tock. We are at Casuals the podcast. In a little bit here we're going to get to the live podcast that we did this weekend at BU at the WBUR Festival with Jared Karabas, my friend who you may know from his podcasts, Baseball is dead and section 10. So we're going to get to him in a little bit. That was very fun. Thank you to everybody who came out. It was very cool to meet some of you. But before we get to that, and we're not going to yap, but we are going to talk to Isabella. We're going to dive into her sports pain a little bit because the Knicks lost to the pacers in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals. 100125 to 108 Game 1 of the NBA Finals. Not until Thursday. I feel like we've been sitting here waiting. I know Isabelle is probably not going to watch Question mark.
Isabella
I don't know. I'm still deciding. I kind of don't want to, but if I do, I'm just definitely not rooting for the Pacers. That's all. Yeah, and I know.
Katie Nolan
Let's talk about, let's talk about the pain. The, the because look, we have sold you on the happiness of sports. We've sold you on all of the good, the communal aspect.
Isabella
I know. And it's like I don't want this pain. I don't.
Katie Nolan
And now here we are. And I feel a little bit bad because look, I've spoken before about how much it sucks when your team loses in a really frustrating way and then you also have to go to work and talk about it. And you didn't. You wouldn't have had to like a few months ago. This would have all been foreign to you. But this is part of it and.
Isabella
So I don't love it. Can I leave this recording right now?
Katie Nolan
Unfortunately, no. What let's talk about the game itself. Where did you watch it? What was your setup?
Isabella
I was at that game like always with my jersey laying on my couch pillow.
Katie Nolan
Did you do the post? Its cuz if not.
Isabella
No, I kept the same post. So I've had one post it this whole time that's just been staying on my tv. It's been pretty general. There was a point. I don't know if it was game six or what if it was Game five where I actually took the post it from the one that I put on the Larry trophy. And I was like, let me just touch it for a second. And I was going to show. I was going to show it to my boyfriend. I was like, oh, this is the one that touched the Larry. And he was like, oh, let me see. I was like, oh, Larry, you actually can't touch it. It's bad energy. He got offended by that. I was like, you can't because do you.
Brady
Do you think your messaging was strong enough on the post it note that you stuck to the language. Remember, you didn't want to offend the. The basketball gods, so all you wrote was peace and love for the Knicks.
Isabella
Why'd you bring this up?
Brady
Do you think it needed to be a stronger message?
Isabella
Listen, I literally.
Brady
You're feeling guilt.
Isabella
I can tell. What the fuck?
Katie Nolan
Chris. This is. Chris is coming on strong.
Isabella
So I think there was. I forgot which game it was. I was after I put that posted on where they actually did lose. And I felt it. And my brother texted me and he was like, it didn't work. And I was like. And I saw someone commented where they were like, oh, Katie, like, lied to you. Why did she let you do this?
Katie Nolan
That's not true. The Larry o' Brien does not have a curse. I specifically asked the guy who brought it around. I was like, is this like the Stanley cup where they say if you touch it before you win it, you curse yourself? And he was like, no. I was like, yeah, okay. Larry would never do that.
Isabella
Okay, okay, okay. And then they went after that. So I was like, okay, so there is no curse.
Jared Karabas
You were trusting the guy that was bringing it around to different podcasts.
Katie Nolan
Brady, you were.
Jared Karabas
You were trusting him.
Katie Nolan
Yes.
Jared Karabas
To tell you whether or not it was.
Katie Nolan
I trusted Larry's. I trusted Larry's escort to know everything about Larry.
Jared Karabas
He brought Larry in and you say, is this curse? What is he gonna say? Yeah, yeah.
Katie Nolan
But here, if you bring an old lady into my restaurant and she and I can, I trust, I can ask you if she has any dietary restrictions. That's your job. You escorted her into the restaurant. So by that logic, which is sound, if you bring the Larry into my podcast and I ask you a question about the Larry, you have to know the answer.
Jared Karabas
But you ask, if you ask me, like, is she going to keel over into her soup? Like, I'm going to say, no, she'll be fine. Even if there's a good chance of it. Like, that is the comp here with this Trophy.
Katie Nolan
So you. So let's just get rid of this old lady Rip. You think that. That I did you think there is a curse on the.
Jared Karabas
I think there may be a curse, but I think we're contextualizing this wrong. I think that Isabella's note of peace.
Katie Nolan
And love for the Knicks wasn't related to the.
Jared Karabas
I think that may have actually perfectly come true. I don't believe anybody got hurt. I believe there was plenty of peace.
Isabella
Exactly. That's why I made it General.
Katie Nolan
No, that's. No, we're saying you did it wrong. I don't know if you're here.
Brady
Yeah, that's why I'm saying it wasn't a strong enough message.
Katie Nolan
You should have pacer ass in 7 Nixon. 7 I love.
Isabella
Why are you guys doing this to me?
Katie Nolan
It's like you're so that the knife.
Isabella
Is already in and you just want.
Katie Nolan
To turn it so that next time the Larry comes by and we still have this podcast in seven years, when the Knicks make it again next time you can write a stronger message. We're just trying to help you grow through the pain.
Isabella
Okay, and what if I wrote a stronger message and they lost?
Katie Nolan
Well, then we'd be having a different conversation. But that's not what happened. Okay. You know, there's no way of knowing. But look, I think sports pain is important to go through, as I'm sure off the top of their heads. Chris and Brady, shut up. Trying to help you. We're gonna commiserate. Okay, Chris, top of mind. What was your biggest sports pain? Upsetness, Sadness.
Brady
There was a couple of years ago. I think it was 2012, 2022, last round of the season. Carlton were playing our arch rivals, Collingwood. We needed to win that game to make our first playoff appearance since 2013. And we're up most of the game and we lost in the final minute. And it brought me to some tears and a lot of anger and I needed to just step outside. It was the middle of the night, it was raining, and I just needed to go for a leisurely 20 minute walk in the rain. And then by the time I came back, felt a little bit better.
Isabella
No umbrella?
Brady
No. No. Because I had to feel. I had to, like, I just had to experience all of the experience. Everything around me wasn't allowed to. It couldn't be a comfortable walk. It had to be an uncomfortable walk. So I can do whatever I could to forget about the pain of that football game. I also didn't have a T shirt on because I threw my T shirt.
Isabella
In Anger, shirtless, walking in the rain.
Brady
So we're shirtless walking in the rain.
Katie Nolan
So Isabella, maybe don't do that. I don't think that's a good thing for you to do.
Brady
That was I. It was quite therapeutic.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. Brady.
Brady
Haven't done it since.
Katie Nolan
Brady, what's your biggest. What's the most that sports has hurt you, boy?
Jared Karabas
Jeffrey Mayer. Easy answer. Easy answer. Yes. Fucking boy. Are different. Are different words. Jeffrey Mayer. Yankees Orioles postseason. Fly ball to right field off the bat of Jeffrey Mayer. Tony Tarasco camps under it. 11 year old shithead Jeffrey Mayer steals that ball. Yankees win. This is an easy one.
Katie Nolan
Like, wait, you called that kid a fuck boy?
Jared Karabas
I did.
Katie Nolan
Like, what's going on? This is a different. Wait.
Isabella
This was someone in the crowd.
Jared Karabas
This was someone in the crowd. This is 1997. So like I was 12. Jeffrey Mayer was 11. I will still fight him to this day. We'll be two. Isabella was a grown men scrapping on a curb. Yeah. Jeffrey Mayer sitting in the front row. There was no replay at this point. There was no.
Katie Nolan
Cameras weren't invented.
Jared Karabas
Cameras had not been invented. There's like a courtroom sketch of this ball about to land in the glove of Orioles right fielder Tony Tarrasco. And Jeffrey Mayer reaches out, catches the ball, which you are not allowed to do. This should be an out. This should be. And they called it a home run ball that would have landed.
Isabella
Allowed to do that.
Jared Karabas
No, you're not allowed to do that. But he did it. The umpires did not call it. The umpires just looked at it and thought, that looks like a home run to me. And this little shithead celebrates and goes on Letterman and lives his life. And he's out there just running around in the streets. Just in, in a. In a vest made of broken dreams of Baltimoreans.
Katie Nolan
How old was he?
Jared Karabas
He was like 11, 12.
Katie Nolan
And how old were you?
Jared Karabas
I was like 11 or 12.
Katie Nolan
And you didn't relate to this kid at all?
Jared Karabas
Yeah, I wanted my knuckles to relate to his dumb looking face.
Isabella
Where is Jeffrey Mayer now?
Katie Nolan
What's his deal now?
Jared Karabas
I hope he still do press dedicated casuals listener, because I will.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, let's get him on the pod.
Jared Karabas
I will happily lose one fan over this.
Katie Nolan
Would you feel better?
Jared Karabas
1996, I was off by a year.
Isabella
That's one download. Brady, come on him.
Katie Nolan
We need him. Would you feel better if his life was just in shambles now? He'd like had lost his job and was, you know, a slave to the drink. Would this make you feel better if his life had just completely gone poor.
Jared Karabas
If I showed up to the high school reunion and he was like an easy three Bills and was like, his pants didn't fit right, and I'm like, I'll live on this Schadenfreude. Things aren't going well for him.
Katie Nolan
Oh, my God. That's true hatred. Yeah. And that's the most sports has hurt you.
Chris
Yes.
Katie Nolan
Mine was in 2013 Stanley Cup Finals against the Chicago Blackhawks, game six, the series. Isabella had gone to overtime. The first game of the series, I think, went to triple overtime, and Chicago won. Then the second game, Boston won in overtime. It was like a very closely matched series. Game six, Chicago has won three, Boston's won two. So it's a must win for Boston. And if Chicago wins, you know, they. They win it all. The Bruins are up 21 late in the third period. 76 seconds left. Chicago scores to tie it. So they're like, okay, it's going to go to OT again. 17 seconds later, they score again, and they win.
Brady
Brutal.
Katie Nolan
I was so upset. I was so upset.
Isabella
And how did you cope?
Katie Nolan
Well, I was at a. I was at. What's the name of that Tasty burger? I was at a bar in Boston and I was like, drank. I drank so much. I was like, well, in that case, shots and another round. And then I just got really drunk, and then I probably got in a fight with my stupid boyfriend, who I was with that night, who I hope is doing miserably.
Jared Karabas
I hope he and Jeffrey Mayer.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, I hope they're both. I hope they're both. They owe back taxes and the IRS is after them.
Jared Karabas
The two of them were in the same submersible trying to explore the Titanic.
Isabella
Jesus.
Katie Nolan
No, I'm with you, though. I am with you.
Jared Karabas
By the way, Tasty Burger by Fenway. I found out this weekend. Closed.
Katie Nolan
I know. And so is Baseball Tavern. I found that out this week.
Jared Karabas
That's exactly where I met. My wife is at Baseball Tavern.
Katie Nolan
Best. That was the best bar. Closed. Gone. Dunzo.
Jared Karabas
Me seeing her for the first time and me watching her rip a car bomb for the first time was like five seconds apart.
Katie Nolan
True love.
Isabella
A car bomb.
Jared Karabas
Oh.
Katie Nolan
Oh. Are we not doing them anymore? I don't think it's actually, Brady. I don't think it's politically correct to. You didn't say. I didn't give it a nationality kind of car bomb.
Jared Karabas
Anybody can blow up a car.
Katie Nolan
It's the. When you drop. Jesus. If you try hard enough. If you. When you drop into a. I think A bomb is anytime you drop a shot into a beer.
Brady
I. I thought it was specifically a Bailey's into a Guinness, but it's just.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, but I think that's that one. But I think.
Chris
Gotcha.
Brady
Gotcha.
Katie Nolan
You can do, like, a Red Bull. I've done like, a what?
Isabella
So you put a shot in the beer and then just drink it.
Katie Nolan
You have to chug it, especially with the Guinness and the. In the Baileys. Cause it'll curdle real quickly.
Brady
It is delicious.
Katie Nolan
You have to chug it very fast. I was recently reminded of baby Guinness shots. Have you guys ever done those?
Jared Karabas
That's a baby Guinness.
Katie Nolan
I had forgotten those existed. I think it's Kahlua at the bottom, and then you float Bailey's on the top, and it looks like a little Guinness.
Isabella
Okay.
Katie Nolan
Those are cute.
Brady
Interesting.
Katie Nolan
Cute and tasty.
Isabella
Maybe I'll have that to cope with my pain.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, it tastes like chocolate milk going down. It does, it does. And coming back up.
Jared Karabas
Yes.
Katie Nolan
So just a spicy little chocolate milk. All right, Well, I think you're going to be okay, Isabella. You know, this is.
Isabella
I will say one thing I wanted to add when I was thinking about all this pain the past couple of days, I will say it was really nice to, like, have this moment where, you know, the city of New York felt very united, you know, and it was nice to have everybody just, like, want to root for the same team, you know?
Katie Nolan
Yeah. That's the beauty of sports. In hindsight, you feel like maybe they celebrated a little too much after getting to this round. You think maybe they went a little too crazy? No.
Isabella
I mean, some of the crazy stuff. Yeah. Like throwing trash and stuff. You know, we didn't need to do that, you know?
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Isabella
We didn't need to, like, say really horrible things. But getting really excited in the streets is fun.
Jared Karabas
Who can blame bing bong when you can bing bong? You only get so many chances to bing bong.
Isabella
Exactly.
Katie Nolan
You bing bonged too close to the sun.
Jared Karabas
Just know that, you know, if I've taught you anything, you'll be lucky enough to have loved sports enough to hold on to this hatred for the next 29 years.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, you hate the Pacers now. You have a foe. You have a foe. You have people to hate.
Isabella
I would hate the Celtics. I thought that would be a thing. Like, I thought that would be, like, the team that I'd hate.
Katie Nolan
Right.
Isabella
And then when we played the Pacers, I was like, I miss Jason Tatum. I miss this team. I. No one has annoyed me more than Tyrese Halpert.
Katie Nolan
Is it because he, they say he plays basketball. Like who was it? What's the sitcom that they rep Urkel. That he plays basketball like Urkel. Have you seen those clips? It's very funny. All right, Game one of the NBA Finals. Sorry, Isabella, plug your ears. Between the Pacers and Thunder will be Thursday night, 8:30pm Eastern on ABC. In that same vein, while we're laying things to rest, NBA on TNT is ending. After 35 seasons inside the NBA signed off for the last time on TNT at the conclusion of Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Conference Finals. It's won 21 sports Emmys, but it will appear on ESPN and ABC surrounding high profile live events, including ESPN's pre game, halftime and post game coverage of the NBA Finals, conference finals, NBA playoffs, and all ABC Games After January 1, Christmas Day, opening week, the. I mean, there, it's still a show. Do you feel like everybody was kind of too sad this week or do you think inevitably ESPN will muck this up and ruin a good thing?
Jared Karabas
I mean, it's a great show, but if somebody was like, hey, the Wire's getting a seventh season, but it's going to be on freeform, like, it just feels like this is not going to be the same, you know?
Katie Nolan
But isn't it too many production crew. Aren't they just basically licensing it out like McAfee's show?
Jared Karabas
Yes.
Katie Nolan
So how could it possibly change?
Jared Karabas
I know. How could ESPN possibly, possibly make something worse?
Katie Nolan
I mean, famous last words. So, okay, so I think the general consensus is that they're going to blow it. Chris, you watch a lot of NBA. Are you concerned about this at all? Did it, did you get emotional seeing them say goodbye?
Brady
I'm going to be honest for a second here.
Katie Nolan
Be honest. What the hell were you doing before? Be honest. The whole podcast. It's kind of a policy.
Brady
I did be honest about stepping outside topless in the rain, crying after Carlton lost. So I don't know how much more honest I can be after that.
Jared Karabas
I tried to fight a child, so.
Brady
But you were a child, so it's fine. I, I never really watched the show.
Katie Nolan
Oh.
Brady
I feel like I'm very much in the minority, especially amongst NBA fans. I watched, I watched a lot of NBA, but for some reason that wasn't a show that I really gravitated towards. I never had it on my tv. I'd watch clips every now and then.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Brady
When there's a viral clip that I saw on social media. But now I haven't had social media for the last, you know, almost year.
Katie Nolan
He reminds us again often, I don't even have a tv. I actually prefer the book.
Brady
I just, I never quite got into it. So I don't really have that same connection to these guys as most viewers do. Most NBA fans do. So he didn't mean as much to me.
Jared Karabas
Here's where I don't trust ESPN on is that the beauty of Inside the NBA was that you had to be okay with an organized show. Like, these guys would admit that they hadn't watched basketball for a week, but could still entertain you with wherever that segment was going to go. They were going to find a way to get there to entertain you. And I imagine producing that thing had to. You had to just feel like the studio was on fire at all times. It must be terrifying. And ESPN doesn't do terrifying. They do controlled environments. They do very safe, very clean broadcasts. And that is not where Inside the NBA made its name.
Katie Nolan
They are very risk averse.
Jared Karabas
Yes.
Katie Nolan
And they like things to fit into a little box that they're very good at constructing, but it feels a certain way. So, yeah, I could see that as well. But again, if they're not touching it, this could still go the same. Most of the stuff I've seen is people saying that the way ESPN goes to commercial too often is going to screw up the show. I don't know. I think, look, you're not going to catch me saying ESPN won't screw something up. But I just felt people were very emotional about saying goodbye to something that will, that will be back. So it just felt like either say goodbye to it and it's gone, or don't say goodbye to it and we'll see you next year. It felt like we kind of tried to have its funeral and then also we're going to see it again next year. So I don't know. That part of it made me go like, how am I supposed to feel?
Jared Karabas
It's like when Scrubs had that extra season.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Jared Karabas
It's like we already did the finale.
Katie Nolan
We do do that quite a bit where we take something, we say goodbye to it, and then we go, but what if we kept it around and it's not the same? It's like a reanimated corpse. And then you're. The memory of it fades.
Isabella
And now the other version of it is like when like the show in the last season, like decides to go in one direction and you kind of become accepting of it and you're like, oh, okay. And then the last two episodes, they Just completely undo whatever plot they made you.
Katie Nolan
How I met your mother.
Isabella
That's literally what I was thinking. I was like, okay. I became okay with Robin and Barney and now you're just going to undo this. Okay.
Katie Nolan
Crazy. Just a crazy choice. Also, I feel like Game of Thrones kind of falls into that as well. They built up this whole thing and then they were like, no, just kidding. She's crazy. The dragons are gonna go nuts and she's gonna kill a bunch of people. All right.
Jared Karabas
They rushed to the end of that show so those two guys could go produce a Star wars movie. And then the show was so bad at the end, Star wars was like, we don't want you anymore.
Katie Nolan
Then they had nothing ever even. They had nothing crazy. That was so nuts.
Jared Karabas
We all lost.
Katie Nolan
What a fumble. What a fumble. Okay, so goodbye to NBA on tnt. Okay, this one's kind of sad, but I do want to make sure we talk about it because John Brankus was such a big part of a lot of our childhoods. The founder and host of the Emmy winning sports science show that I feel like we all grew up with. He died aged 54 after a battle with depression. It was that aired in 2007. It was on Fox Sports first. People forget and then it moved to espn. The show sought to uncover sports biggest myth, the myths and mysteries by using cutting edge technology to measure momentum, friction and the laws of gravity. Isabella, you probably never. You didn't probably encounter sports science at all.
Isabella
Nope, not at all.
Katie Nolan
Brady described it yesterday as like Bill Nye. But for sports, it was just such a good intersection of like trying to teach us something. Even though, I mean, you weren't going to retain it. You weren't going to say like, oh, did you actually know that gravity affects the. But it was just such an interesting look at some sports and how, you know, streaming anywhere works. I don't know. That's a. They should put it on. I mean, you've got ESPN plus now. Just put it on there in memory of, of John. I feel like, yeah, I gotta, I.
Isabella
Gotta check this out. I gotta figure out how it might be.
Katie Nolan
And now let me say it might be outdated. I don't, I haven't looked at it with adult eyes. I don't know if the tech from 2007 is like, you know, ancient, but it was so fascinating then.
Jared Karabas
Anybody who makes, puts that much effort into like making education accessible, making that kind of information accessible, like, yes, thank you for doing it. But also like, you know, you're never going to make, you know, Billions of dollars doing it. So like that kind of dedication to the craft, like I, I really like thank Bill Nye for that and thank you John Brinkus for that. And like that's the same kind of affection that you feel all the people you grew up with like the Mr. Rogers is in the Levar Burtons of the world. Like just kind of love anybody that brought that to TV and made science accessible to people. And like if kids were into science, like absolutely they would grab onto this. If kids were in a sports, they would grab onto this. And if they're not into one that brings them to the other like I, I loved everything. You don't get that on TV anymore. I loved everything that stood for. Definitely didn't appreciate it enough until right now realizing how I feel about this.
Katie Nolan
I know, yeah, it's a real bummer. I'm going to take this opportunity to say 988 is the suicide and crisis lifeline. If you're ever feeling lost or scared or like your depression is taking over for you. Also the national Mental Health hotline is free and it's 24. 7 866. 247 is me telling you that it's 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The number is 866-9033-787. Shout out. John Brinkus, you taught us a lot and thank you for everything you gave us. Luke Litler. Chris, what happened? Your boy darts, he lost. Sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry. Our boy lost in the PDC final against. Oh, number one, Luke Humphries.
Chris
Yes.
Brady
It was a, it was a tight game. It was, it was an interesting match actually. So neither athlete, neither player really felt like they had hit their straps. There was a lot of opportunities for both guys to really go on a run. They missed some, some pretty easy throws time after time and then once they came back from the break, Humphreys just sort of turned it on and showed why he's the best player in the world. So unfortunately our guy Luke Littler lost 11 legs to eight and so now his.
Katie Nolan
And now everything's over. We never see him again.
Brady
We will be seeing him in nine days.
Isabella
Oh, and you know wait, wait real quick. You know what I say to that? You know what I say to that?
Jared Karabas
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
Whoa. Oh my God. She's holding up a post it note that says go Luke. Wow.
Jared Karabas
So Luke's doomed now, right?
Katie Nolan
What the fuck?
Isabella
You know what? Just for that, Just for that. Just for that.
Chris
You hear that?
Brady
Asmr tearing it up. Tearing up the.
Katie Nolan
Are you okay? No, no, she's not.
Isabella
I feel like I'd rather take my anger out on a post it than on an 11 year old boy from like 1996.
Brady
So yes, the World cup of Darts will begin in Germany on June 12th. So in nine days time, great. Luke Litlow will be partnering with Luke Humphries.
Katie Nolan
Oh my God.
Brady
Eng England in this tournament. So they are the unbeatable duo. Surely.
Katie Nolan
What's the surely? Are they friendly? Is that.
Brady
Apparently they're good friends.
Katie Nolan
Okay, okay, that's fine. That makes sense then. What was Luke Littler ranked? He lost to number one. He was two. Yeah.
Brady
Yep, Number two.
Katie Nolan
A lot of sense.
Brady
And some good news that I just saw from the last couple of days.
Katie Nolan
We deserve this good news.
Brady
Yeah. The PDC has agreed that that's for the Professional Darts Corporation, of course. They have agreed to a new broadcast deal in the new US with national network NBC Sports. Through the agreement, select PDC events will be shown live on NBC's Peacock streaming service, live coverage of the US Darts Masters, world Match Play, World Grand Prix, Grand Slam of Darts and the World Darts Championship. So because we spoke about it so much on this show because there have been this renewed interest in darts, not because of Luke Litlov, but because of this podcast, Peacock is now going to be streaming a whole bunch of darts which is going to make it a lot easier for people to seek out and watch and enjoy.
Katie Nolan
Amazing. The pointy end on the cock coming next year.
Jared Karabas
Chris, is this true? Is this true? Per Luke Littler's Wikipedia, his walk up music for darts is Green Light by Pitbull.
Isabella
They have walk up music.
Katie Nolan
I love it.
Brady
They have walk up music. It's incredible. I don't know what that song sounds like. I know what his walk up music sounds like.
Katie Nolan
So I'm thinking of Green Light of it. Is that John Legend? That's the one that's coming to mind. But I don't know. Green Light by Pitbull, I don't think is Mr. Worldwide. Mr. 305. Another update and kind of coming to you for this, Chris, because I know you watched it because you texted us about it. The spelling bee. Did anything crazy happen?
Brady
Of course.
Katie Nolan
Okay, tell talk to us about it.
Brady
It was an insane night. So the spelling bee was eventually won by by last year's Runner up, a 13 year old from Texas whose name is Faizan Zaki. He ended up winning because he correctly spelled ecclesismo to win the tournament.
Katie Nolan
Ecclesismo.
Brady
Ecclesismo.
Katie Nolan
Country of origin? France, I assume.
Brady
Yeah. Two accents and he spelled it like without asking any questions, without hesitating. And that was sort of his thing. Right? Like he was the cocky, confident kid. Very funny seeing a 13 year old spelling bee competitor this confident.
Katie Nolan
The most confident nerd.
Brady
Oh yeah. Like he was the cool kid. You could tell on stage you're not.
Katie Nolan
Shoving him in a locker.
Brady
Exactly. He's been there before. He was last year's runner up. He knows what he's doing. He's used to the spotlight. And so for the majority of the night, whenever they presented him with the word, you know, usually spellers will ask questions. What's the origin of the word? Can you use it in a sentence? Is there any alternate pronunciations of the word? I don't know if it's just to kill time while they think of it or really to understand what that word looks like in their head based on all of this information, but he seemed to be the only speller that didn't need any of that. He just immediately would spell it. That sort of got him into trouble because he had a chance to win in the eighth round after his other two competitors had made mistakes. So he was the, the final speller. If he got this word correct, he would have had the opportunity to win. And as soon as they said the word, he started spelling it. He said K a M. And then he like stopped himself and he's like, hang on, wait. And then he asked a question because he's like, I, I, he instantly knew he got it wrong. And so as they started saying to him, no, it's actually spelt, and then he, you know, jumped in.
Katie Nolan
And so once you start spelling it, you can't go back.
Brady
Exactly. As soon as he said K instead.
Katie Nolan
Of C, it was over.
Chris
He gets it wrong.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, goes to the C. Yeah.
Brady
And he knew it as well. He just, he was too quick. I don't know if it was because of.
Isabella
He was too cocky.
Brady
Too cocky, cocky, something like that. But he jumped in too quickly. So then the other two competitors came back. Well, actually, I think there was only one other competitor came back and then they had a couple more rounds and eventually he won on Ecclesismon. But it was just, it was incredible watching how confident this kid was at one stage. I can't remember what the word was, but he called Jacques Bailey the head pronunciator, bro. When this guy warned Faizan that the word that he was about to spell was a homonym. And Faizan's just like, bro, are you kidding me?
Isabella
I know that bro.
Katie Nolan
I know it's a homonym called him.
Jared Karabas
Broke this 13 year old kids bro.
Chris
Please. It was funny.
Jared Karabas
No, it's a hominin, bro.
Katie Nolan
Are you for real right now? Like, obviously, the Dodgers tried to kill a guy. I don't know if anybody saw that. Dodgers tried to kill a guy. A piece of concrete reportedly fell from Dodger Stadium and hit a spectator over the weekend, prompting the installation of protective netting. Which I really thought they'd be like, oh my God, we're going to close that section and reinforce the. We're just gonna put up a net. So it might still fall, but it's not gonna fall on you.
Jared Karabas
Same logic as swim trunks.
Katie Nolan
A ch. What?
Jared Karabas
Hmm. They just kind of put a netting up there to support the falling concrete.
Katie Nolan
Oh my God. Oh my God. Can I go back to before you said that and live my life that way?
Jared Karabas
Logistics made sense.
Katie Nolan
A chunk of. Okay, a chunk of concrete roughly the size of a softball fell onto a Yankees fan named Ricardo Aquino Friday night. He's getting name recognition. He's a Mexico City resident and he said he was struck in the back during the third inning of the Dodgers 85 win over the Yankees. Through a translator, he told the athletic that quote, he was in some pain, but that the concrete hadn't caused bleeding. Well, that's looking at the bright side, I guess. After the incident, the Dodgers installed a small section of protective netting under the top deck of the stadium in section 10 reserve. Shout out section 10, which is located between home plate and first base. All right. Your stadium's falling apart and now this is. I know this is my take and not everybody's, but it really fuels the fire of the Dodgers. Stadium sucks. I don't. I'm not a fan of that stadium at all.
Isabella
Really.
Katie Nolan
I think it stinks. I think. I think we get into it a little bit with Jared. So I shouldn't say too much, but I just not a fan of Chavez Ravine.
Brady
Does anyone like that stadium?
Katie Nolan
The Dodgers fans, Do they actually like it?
Brady
I thought cuz there was not enough.
Jared Karabas
To show up on time.
Katie Nolan
Well, it's impossible to get an issue.
Brady
Like parking and traffic and all that sort of stuff.
Katie Nolan
It is like a stadium designed without LA in mind. There is no chance to get to a game on time. If you're coming from anywhere other than working at Dodger Stadium, there's just no way you can't get there quickly enough. And I think it stinks. Literally, I think it smells. There are parts of that stadium that smell like a toilet. It's.
Brady
That's why I just thought even LA fans wouldn't like it.
Katie Nolan
Well, I don't know. I feel like you shouldn't ever speak negatively about your own stadium. Like, we have. I have issues with Fenway. There are issues that I have with Fenway, but I wouldn't change Fenway, and I would never. Outwardly, Fenway's cute as a. It's so cute. And I went on a tour there recently.
Isabella
Well, not recently, but in recent years.
Katie Nolan
When?
Isabella
I don't know. Like, a couple years ago, maybe.
Katie Nolan
Like. I don't know. Please don't ask.
Isabella
I don't know. I. I sat by the Green Monster.
Katie Nolan
Nice. Did you go inside?
Isabella
Inside where?
Katie Nolan
The Green Monster. The Green Monster, where, like, the scoreboard is where you put the numbers up. I didn't know if the tour went in there.
Isabella
I went into. I think it. Was it the press box? I don't know.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, yeah, probably. It's now the Jerry Remy press. The Jerry Remy.
Isabella
Yeah. Where they said. Where everyone. You know, when they talk and stuff.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. You know when they.
Isabella
And there's a window and you see the field. Yeah, yeah. Seats are small, though. Seats are pretty small.
Katie Nolan
Those. Listen, those where they call the games from across the. I only went to, I don't know, probably 12 different ones. Very cramped. Certainly made for two people. So three was always difficult. But, yeah, very small. Very cramped. Not very plush. You know, there was no. Like, oh, this seat's so comfy. It was always uncomfortable for the.
Jared Karabas
Not every seat in that stadium faces the field, which is, you know, kind of a unique quirk.
Katie Nolan
Which stadium are you talking about? Fenway.
Jared Karabas
Fenway. Sometimes you're just like.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. And also sometimes you're directly behind a pole, so you only had to pay a hundred dollars for your ticket instead of 200. So that's nice. They give you a nice little discount.
Brady
It's all part of the charm.
Katie Nolan
It is. And it's the oldest, so it's allowed to be like that.
Isabella
Yeah. And they have, like, a little. A little, like, museum room at the end that you can walk through, see people's. I don't know. Balls. Jersey. Hold on. I. I can't think today.
Katie Nolan
Fenway park, come look at our balls.
Isabella
The. The baseball kind.
Katie Nolan
Uhhuh. Shout out to Ricardo Aquino. I guess. Good thing it hit you in the back and not the head. That's what I'll say. Because that could have been probably a nightmare.
Jared Karabas
You know, I would get Ohtani to sign it.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. I'd be like, listen, if the guy who. If the Astros fan who Took a ball out of Mike Trout's glove earlier in the season. Got to then because of that meet Mike Trout later with his kid. Then I feel like if the stadium falls apart on your back, you should get to take a. You should get to be have an at bat. You get to play just once for a second because you deserve this so that you won't sue and have a walk on song when you do it and yes, exactly. You should get to have walk up music of whatever you want.
Jared Karabas
62 games, there's like 6,000 at bats. Give the man one, give him one.
Katie Nolan
He's only asking for one. It's just a morsel. Just like a morsel of your stadium fell on this man. Okay, and then last thing, because we gotta get to Jared and we're talking too much. But I did want to mention Champions League. The final happened in France. PSG Paris Saint Germain beat Inter Milan 5 nil. Which is not your usual soccer score. So it wasn't very close. I'm pretty sure there it was like two nothing. Very early right in the match. But afterwards, riots, riots in the street. Two people have died and at least 192 others are injured. Following these riots, 559 people were arrested. This is according to the French interior ministry. Including 491 of them in Paris. 320 were placed in police custody.
Chris
There were so many arrests.
Katie Nolan
I know. Smashed bus shelters, riot police firing tear gas, a water cannon. This was all on Champs Elysees, which like you do not picture it looking like this. It's always this beautiful. But it was a mess, police reported. This is what I want to zoom in on.692 fires.
Jared Karabas
A lot of fires.
Katie Nolan
And Brady, you had a good point about this.
Jared Karabas
They got to be spread out because like if two fires are too close to each other, they just count as one fire.
Katie Nolan
You'd call it one fire. That fire spread 692 separate fires. A lot of fires is great.
Brady
Also, how big does a flame need to be before it's classified as a fire?
Katie Nolan
Good question. I would say it's got to be. It's got to be like whipping in the wind. It's got to be like a big. Isn't it? Like when it gets hot enough, the bottom is like blue. I think it's got to be that.
Isabella
If it's the size that would fit in like a fireplace, then yeah, yeah.
Brady
Minimum fireplace sized fire.
Katie Nolan
And then how far would you say? Like half a mile away is how far you'd have to be for it to be considered a new fire, it.
Isabella
Has to be like, maybe, like, three feet.
Katie Nolan
No, but I mean away from it. In order for the next fire to be not the same fire, you say three feet?
Jared Karabas
100 hundred feet.
Katie Nolan
Cause otherwise, I could just light a match here and a match here and be like, these are two fires.
Isabella
They're not as big as a fireplace fire, though.
Katie Nolan
Okay, you're right. I would count them as the same. It'd be like, Paris is burning. That's what I would say. I don't think I'd go, one fire, two fire, three, four. Yeah.
Isabella
Are they, like, on walkie talkies? Like, guys, we have 11 over here.
Katie Nolan
Add a fire to the list. This is like DJs in Philadelphia when they arrived. We have 692, two DJs.
Jared Karabas
Additionally, we burned a lot of things when Maryland won the ACC in 2003. There's a limit.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, I feel like there's a limit, Isabella.
Jared Karabas
Also, dumb college kids versus entirety of Paris. Has to be a difference.
Katie Nolan
Is this. Is this fascinating to you, Isabella, as a. As a younger sports fan, the way that people burn and break when they win?
Isabella
No, I think it's like. Like it's too much. Why are you burning?
Katie Nolan
I do think, too, that, like, I'm surprised we don't do this more after a loss. I mean, they do do it, but it happens more often when they win than it does, like, I don't know.
Isabella
Have a tailgate or something. Have a party, get excited, go to bars, you know?
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Jared Karabas
This is just one of those things that doesn't translate outside of sports.
Isabella
Yeah.
Jared Karabas
Like, the Dochi stands don't go, like, burn couches when she wins a Grammy.
Katie Nolan
Okay. And why don't they. Dochi stands. We need to be better. Okay, let's get out.
Brady
Do you even like Dochi?
Katie Nolan
Yeah, let's get out there.
Isabella
Couch.
Katie Nolan
Climb up, climb up telephone poles. Okay. And eat an animal's ex. Excrement. Or do you really even like Dochi?
Jared Karabas
Ride a horse.
Katie Nolan
Nicki Minaj fans are more likely to do this. We should appeal to them. We could probably get them to do it. Okay, so that's what happened. Should we go to this interview? I think the people want to hear it. They're all clamoring for it. So let's give it to him. Jared Karabas, a good friend of mine. He's a big baseball guy, big Red Sox guy. We had him on to talk about. You know, we're a third of the way through the baseball season, so a little bit of level setting. We talked about a bunch of stuff that I. That I. I remember. But why spoil it, you know? So let's go ahead and get into it. Our interview with Jared Karabas from this weekend at the WBUR festival.
Chris
Every day our world gets a little more connected, but a little further apart. But then there are moments that remind us to be more human.
Katie Nolan
Thank you for calling Amica Insurance. Hey, I was just in an accident. Don't worry, we'll get you taken care of.
Chris
At Amica, we understand that looking out for each other isn't new or groundbreaking. It's human. Amica empathy is our best policy. Parents of tweens, if you're familiar with.
Jared Karabas
Far off drop offs.
Chris
Dad, stop.
Katie Nolan
Stop. Stop right here. Or get DMs about what's for dinner. You may be experiencing tween milestones for your son or daughter. These can start at age 9. HPV vaccination, a type of cancer prevention against certain HPV related cancers, can start then too.
Chris
For most, HPV clears on its own. But for those who don't clear the virus, it can cause certain cancers later in life.
Katie Nolan
Embrace this phase.
Isabella
Help protect them in the next.
Katie Nolan
Ask their doctor today about HPV vaccination brought to you by Merck. There are some things in life that just shouldn't be forgotten. Like bringing your keys when you leave.
Chris
The house, setting your fantasy lineup, and most importantly, having Hidden Valley Ranch to watch the game. Especially if wings are on the menu.
Katie Nolan
Those creamy, zesty, cool ranch flavors take.
Chris
Each spicy, savory bite bite to an unforgettable level. Hidden Valley Ranch only serious about flavor. Ryan Reynolds here from Mint Mobile. Chris
Yeah. So now you did unobstructed views of me last year for the first time.
Katie Nolan
Did you just forget the name of your own show?
Chris
I did, yes. I usually, yeah, like the Red Sox cast, but it's. It's unobstructed. Views. I did one with Katie last year, but the. The new bit this year is in the commercial. They call me Red Sox Superfan. And I was like, wow, of all the things.
Katie Nolan
I mean, is it wrong?
Chris
No, no, it's. No, it's not. It's actually very accurate.
Katie Nolan
How did you. Let's talk about it then. How did you get your start in. In baseball?
Chris
Ooh, dating myself here. A little website called MySpace. MySpace.com started actually when I was 18 years old. My first time on TV was here. It was at BU. It was in, like one of the. I don't even know. It's like a conference room. Do you know Tim Russert? He did like, Meet the Press. Yeah, he like. So I was the shyest kid in the world and we did a debate for president of Red Sox Nation, and it was moderated by the actual moderator for, like, United States presidential candidates. I was like, this is a little excessive for 18 year old Jared.
Katie Nolan
Did you win?
Chris
No, no, no.
Katie Nolan
Who won?
Chris
Do you know Jerry Remy? Oh, I mean, yeah, of course.
Katie Nolan
And he still is president.
Chris
He still is, yeah. He'll always be my president.
Katie Nolan
Yes, exactly. Yes. My president.
Chris
Yes. So started with our dear friend Pete Blackburn. Started a podcast, which at the time, the best. Didn't really know, like, what podcasting was. It was kind of just. Pete knew how to do this and I was like, sure. While talking to a microphone with you. No problem.
Katie Nolan
Did he spill his coffee all over himself too, or.
Chris
Yeah, I mean, Pete's. Yeah, he's. He's not always like the. The cleanest cat in the world, you know, but yeah, we started the podcast section 10, and it's kind of just evolved into the. The cult that it is today.
Katie Nolan
And now you have. I mean, you've gone from superfan to like. They did a Section 10 night at Fenway.
Chris
Yeah. It was awesome to see you there. Just kidding. You didn't come.
Katie Nolan
I live in New York.
Chris
That was crazy.
Katie Nolan
I live in. I also wasn't invited. I had to find out online that it happened.
Chris
It was like an open invitation. Well, yeah, but they did do a Section 10 night last year at Fenway. It was really cool. I was. I was listening to you do an interview backstage and she was kind of like asking you all these questions, like, would you rather do this or would you rather do that? And I was sitting there being like, I've already done that. She was like, would you rather throw out the first pitch at Fenway? I was like, I've done that twice.
Katie Nolan
Okay, two times. So what was it? What was the theme of the night that they asked you to throw out the first pitch?
Chris
I think it was more so. Hey, our team really sucks.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Chris
We need to sell tickets. We want people to be excited and actually care about the game that's going on tonight. So here's this podcast that people apparently like. So come on down.
Katie Nolan
Two first pitches you've thrown.
Chris
Yes.
Katie Nolan
At the. At Fenway.
Chris
At Fenway. The first one strikes. Katie, Come on, come on. The first one right down the plate. This was. Pressure was on.
Katie Nolan
Were you on the mound?
Chris
Yes.
Katie Nolan
Okay. Because they. Most people will throw from in front of the mound and if not see somebody do that.
Chris
The second one. No.
Katie Nolan
Oh.
Chris
Because they made us all like, we had to let. The whole podcast was in front of the mound. The first one. Red Sox, Yankees, Sunday night Baseball.
Katie Nolan
That's a big deal.
Chris
Garrett Cole, who I make fun of, relentlessly on the top step of the dugout waiting for me to fail.
Katie Nolan
Great.
Chris
Aaron Boone, who I've tortured for now two decades, standing there with his arms crossed, waiting for me to throw a ball. Actually, the ESPN guys, Eduardo Perez, Carl Ravitch, were up in the booth and they were. They were filming it saying, here's Jared Carrabba's been warming up since 2:30. It was a 7 o' clock game and they were waiting. He's like, if you throw a ball, if you throw it to the Backstop, we have 19 cameras that are going to have every single angle of that. So there's never been a higher pressure, pressure situation in my life.
Katie Nolan
Now see, if I were telling this story, the end of it would be that I fell flat on my face and everybody laughed. But you're giving us all this hype and you're gonna say that you.
Chris
That's your strike. Right down the middle. Yeah, yeah, right down the middle.
Katie Nolan
How did you calm your nerves? I did it at a minor league game and I was so stressed out that I was gonna do it wrong, that I did it even wronger.
Chris
Is this your only time that you've done the first pitch? We need to. A Katie Nolan first pitch tour throughout the minor leagues.
Katie Nolan
Would be cool.
Chris
Would be cool. And also once you content.
Katie Nolan
This was the first time I had thrown a baseball in like 15 years I played softball. They're very different sizes. I don't know if you know that they're not the same ball. So it was very. A lot of it was just too. I got too stressed out.
Chris
I think we're on to something with the whole Katie Nolan first Pitch Tour. That would be great content. I would. I would sponsor it.
Katie Nolan
Brady, write it down. Write it down. All right. So that's who you are and who I am. We're a third of the way through the baseball season. I figured we could sort of level set and see how everybody is doing. How are the Red Sox? They suck.
Chris
They are not good right now. They should be good, but they're not good. That's the most frustrating territory to be in, is when you're super excited. Your expectations are high. They signed Alex Bregman, who, again, I feel like a lot of the origin stories of if I have a friend in baseball, it starts with me making fun of them first, and then we become friends. Bregman, one of those individuals, very excited that he came to the Red Sox. He's unfortunately hurt right now, and since he got hurt, things have not gone well.
Katie Nolan
How long is he supposed to be out for?
Chris
So it's a quad injury. The last time this happened, four years ago, he missed 58 games. And as we know, in our old age, we don't heal as quickly as we did four years ago. So for yourself, I'm anticipating, I don't know, a little bit more than two months, which would suck.
Katie Nolan
It especially sucks because of the situation around third base, which, you know, we had somebody playing third base. We did once when we signed that third baseman for all that money. And then we asked that sweet, sweet third baseman. We had, Raphael Devers to switch to dh, which he did not want to do, but he did.
Chris
And he's raking reluctantly, but yes.
Katie Nolan
And then our first baseman goes down, Tristan Casas. And then they want. People were talking about Rafi Devers playing first base. Where did you stand on all of this? Because I know how I felt.
Chris
I. It's almost like one of those things where he's your friend, but he has that one thing about him where you're like, oh, man, I wish that side of his personality didn't come out. And I wish he just said the right thing, because if, say, for example, he said, sure, I'll play first base, and he went over there and he sucked. Then it's like, all right, this isn't working out, and then we can try someone else. But the fact that you didn't want to do it at all, I'm like, oh, man, I wish. I wish you had just said yes. Because it sends, like, a bad vibe through the clubhouse, and it permeates and it compounds. Oh, yeah, does it? It's still permeating to this day.
Katie Nolan
You don't think that it's sends a bad vibe if you're the. I mean, wasn't he our highest paid player before we signed Bregman?
Chris
No. Still is. I mean, like, on an average annual basis, it's Bregman, but on a total dollars, it's.
Katie Nolan
I promised we wouldn't talk about salary cap, so we're just going to say he was at the top of the list.
Chris
Makes a lot of money.
Katie Nolan
To ask him to not do the thing he wants to do was already kind of a huge ask. And then to ask him to do another thing he doesn't know how to do, you don't think that's like a. At what point have I. Am I good enough that I can just play my position and you cannot ask me to be a utility player?
Chris
I think they both made mistakes here. I think the Red Sox did a poor job communicating. I think Devers. Yeah, yeah. Men and their communication issues. The Red Sox did a poor job there and then. I think Devers could have gone about it a little bit more, like, friendlier.
Katie Nolan
I don't know.
Chris
Like, he was just like, no.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. And that's Jared's position, to be clear, not mine.
Chris
What's yours?
Katie Nolan
I thought, I feel like, stop asking the guy to do stuff he doesn't want to do.
Chris
Well, now they're asking. They won't even ask him to play third base, which two months ago. He was a third baseman two months ago. But now that Bregman's down, they're like, yeah, we're too afraid to even talk to this guy.
Katie Nolan
Well, that's their fault.
Chris
It is their fault. I agree.
Katie Nolan
Not his fault. Anyway, what about the who's good start there? Who's good in baseball this season? Because at the beginning of the season, everybody said the Red Sox are really good. Everybody got my hopes up. I'm not a hype person. And every time I see you start to get hyped on the Red Sox, I remind myself, like, on my timelines, I'm like, that's Jared. He works there. He has to do this. I have to calm myself down and be more rational. But people from outside, outside of Boston were being like, no, you should get hyped. This is the year. And it's probably not. So whose year is it?
Chris
Ooh. Well, the Yankees are playing well, unfortunately. They are. They are. The American League kind of sucks this year. The American League is not. It's. It's not like a competitive field. The National League has all the best teams this year. Yankees and Dodgers played last night. That's cool that it's kind of like a heavyweight battle between those two teams. Like, it's good to have stars. It's good to have, like, two juggernaut teams. I can't remember the last time we saw a World Series. That was a repeat of the year before. I feel like that's probably where we're heading this year.
Katie Nolan
Boo.
Chris
I know, Boo.
Katie Nolan
I mean, an excite.
Chris
That was the other question that you answered that was wrong backstage.
Katie Nolan
So let's just really quickly.
Chris
All right.
Katie Nolan
I was being interviewed, and he sat there silently, didn't say anything.
Chris
I'm not during your interviews.
Katie Nolan
And didn't think. We goes, yeah, but now you're bringing up Old Chin onto the stage.
Chris
All right, so if. All right, here. Here was the question. It was like, if you could undo any trade to bring back a player, who would it be? She said, brad Marchand. Have you heard of a guy named, I don't know, Mookie Betts? I feel like that's where probably.
Katie Nolan
I said. I said, it's recency bias.
Chris
Yeah. But Brad Marshall, three weeks ago, Recency bias. Mookie Betts, that was. You'll probably look back on that and.
Katie Nolan
Say, yes, I will look back on that.
Chris
Worst trade in Major League Baseball history.
Katie Nolan
No, it was. Yeah, it was horrendous. I stopped watching the Red Sox for a little bit. That's.
Chris
Some people. Never came back.
Katie Nolan
I only did because I had to.
Chris
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
I only did because I had to. Yeah. Mookie Betts is probably the better. You're right, Jared.
Chris
Thank you.
Katie Nolan
Everybody get that? You're right.
Chris
That timestamp 1:14pm Eastern.
Katie Nolan
You're right, Jared.
Chris
Wow. I'm going to use that clip forever. Forever.
Katie Nolan
I miss Mookie Betts.
Chris
The Red Sox have sucked. There he is. I interviewed him for the first time in spring training this year, and I've actually never seen him happier.
Katie Nolan
Damn.
Chris
Yeah. Yeah.
Katie Nolan
I mean, I'm happy to hear that because he's such a sweetheart. We had him.
Chris
We did have them. We traded him away.
Katie Nolan
We got rid of him.
Chris
He's much richer, much more successful, and clearly much happier elsewhere.
Katie Nolan
What's up with Roman Anthony?
Chris
Go on.
Katie Nolan
So he is the number one prospect in all of baseball. Correct. Marcelo Meyer was number. Was he number two?
Chris
He was.
Katie Nolan
He was ours. Okay. He was up there, though.
Chris
Yeah. Christian Campbell was like, number four.
Katie Nolan
Okay. So we called up Marcelo, Obviously, we signed Christian to the extension. We being the Red Sox. Sorry, we.
Chris
Can you settle a debate for me?
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Chris
Marcelo Meyer does he look like Vinny Chase or Montourage? Kind of a lot. Kind of, kind of. Yeah. Very much so. Yeah. Pull that up.
Katie Nolan
I don't have my phone. Yes, I do.
Chris
Were you a. Were you an Entourage fan?
Katie Nolan
I mean, yes, yes and no. I don't think I saw it all.
Chris
The way through, but you know what Vinny Chase looks like.
Katie Nolan
Yes.
Chris
And you know what?
Katie Nolan
Marcella Meyer, I'm just refreshing on. I just haven't looked at Marcella Meyer that much. He just got here.
Chris
I bet you if you Googled Vinny Cheese, it would all know Marcelo Meyer.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, kind of.
Chris
What picture are you looking at?
Katie Nolan
I don't. A bunch of them. This is good content. Well, if you guys just Google, then scroll through the photos. That's what I'm doing.
Chris
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
I mean, I see what you're saying.
Chris
Yeah. Anyways.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. He has very thick, very prominent eyebrows.
Chris
Great eyebrows. Big league eyebrows. I've said.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Chris
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
Famously so. Roman Anthony, the conversation is about why he's not up, why we're not calling him up, why the Red Sox are not calling him up.
Chris
You can't say we.
Katie Nolan
I don't know. I don't think you're supposed to.
Chris
Why not?
Katie Nolan
I don't know. I mean, if there was ever a room to do it in, right, it's this one.
Chris
Why not?
Katie Nolan
I just. I'm trying to be professional with coffee all over my shirt.
Chris
Yeah, I was gonna say. Yeah.
Katie Nolan
I've also now stained this furniture, so keep it going, not going. I asked for Dunkin Donuts and I got Starbucks. So technically, this is not my fault.
Chris
No. Yeah. Roman Anthony, number one prospect in baseball. He's 21 years old.
Katie Nolan
Yes.
Chris
Which is crazy now that, you know, when we're doing the podcast and we. We went up to Portland, Maine, to interview him for the first time, and I'm like, I am, you know, trying to seek out a 20 year. Like, what year was that? Like that he was born 2005. Oh. Like we were in high school. We were in high school when some.
Katie Nolan
Of us were graduating.
Chris
You were the class of 05.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Chris
Oh, that's crazy. Yeah. But, yeah, number one prospect in baseball. Very, very good baseball player. Why isn't he here? Your guess is as good as mine. I think he'll be here soon, but I think they're trying to, like, it's.
Katie Nolan
Like, manipulate his service time.
Chris
Correct. Yeah.
Katie Nolan
Okay, so can you explain that to a casual fan? What service time is and how it works, but in a not boring way?
Chris
Okay, I'll try. To not dumb it down.
Katie Nolan
No, just make it not boring.
Chris
Okay. So when you play Major League Baseball and you get called up, you have three years of service time that you have to complete before you can begin arbitration. Arbitration year one, two and three before free agency, where you can sign it with any team in that first year of arbitration. Usually what happens is like, I would submit how much I think I'm worth and then if you're the team, you're like, this is what we think that you're worth. And oftentimes the team and the player will just meet in the middle and sign for that right on the dot, middle figure. Or they will go in front of a panel of arbiters and they will decide what the salary is for the player. What just happened with Christian Campbell? It's his rookie year, they called him up and then they gave him a contract extension immediately. So that avoids that entire process. So they've already figured out a salary figure for those years of arbitration. So with Roman Anthony, there's. There's this new rule as part of the. The last CBA where if a player wins Rookie of the Year, I can get to free agency one year faster. So that last year of control you no longer have and I can get to free agency faster if I win Rookie of the Year. So part of it was if we call this dude up on opening day, we kind of know he's going to win Rookie of the year and we would rather have him for six years than five years if he doesn't sign a long term contract, which all indications were that he wasn't going to do that.
Katie Nolan
So. So I have to care about that year instead of this year. That's where they lose me. Where I. It's like we've got a really good guy who's raking, but we can't have him because then we might not have him six years from now. I don't. I'll be dead by then.
Chris
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
I can't imagine. It's like, why, why do we let them do this? Also, he has to win Rookie of the Year. That would be the thing that would keep that from. If he comes up and plays.
Chris
Yes.
Katie Nolan
Does not win Rookie of the Year.
Chris
Correct.
Katie Nolan
First or second in voting?
Chris
It's first.
Katie Nolan
It's first.
Chris
I think it's first. Yeah.
Katie Nolan
That's crazy.
Chris
That's a little crazy. Yeah.
Katie Nolan
So then what the fuck?
Chris
I mean, it's your show.
Katie Nolan
I think you can say, I know, but it's. I don't know these people. I don't know if they're. I don't want to upset anybody.
Chris
What the f. Yeah, it is. It's. It's stupid. I agree. I'm with you. I would rather see Roman Anthony now than care about his 2031 season.
Katie Nolan
It's like when we traded away a great player for the chance to have a great player come up through us. It doesn't make sense. None of that in baseball makes sense to me.
Chris
And most of the time, that doesn't work.
Katie Nolan
I know. So how do you deal with that? As, like, a diehard baseball fan? The business of it pisses me off a lot.
Chris
I'm shocked that my hair isn't gray. I'm dead serious. Like, I'm shocked that, like, I haven't balded at all.
Katie Nolan
Bragging right now for an audio listener. He's letting you know he has a full head of brown hair.
Chris
It's great. Have you seen. Have you ever seen what my dad looks like?
Katie Nolan
No. Why would I have ever seen?
Chris
I mean, I posted. I just. You follow me on Instagram. We just went to London for his 70th birthday.
Katie Nolan
I didn't know that. I don't follow you. Open up your Instagram and check what you're up to.
Chris
Sure you don't. Full head of hair, no dye, no nothing. Like, he's just got salt in his beard. That's it. So the genetics are on my side, but the Red Sox absolutely should have caused some. Some graying. Yeah, yeah. Like, because you don't love them enough. Huh?
Katie Nolan
I said maybe you don't love them enough.
Chris
No, I love them more than anything in the world.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Chris
Yeah. I really do. And I wear it every day. That's why I'm miserable all the time. It's because they've been bad for four years. Sucks.
Katie Nolan
What's. Who are you most excited about in baseball that isn't on the Red Sox.
Chris
Like, player wise or team wise?
Katie Nolan
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Players.
Chris
Player wise. Paul Skeens. You know who Paul Skeens is? Yes. Very large human being, by the way.
Katie Nolan
Really tall.
Chris
In every way that you can be large.
Katie Nolan
Every dimension. Yes, in every way.
Chris
I can't confirm every way, but, I mean, in most ways that are visible to the human eye.
Katie Nolan
Okay.
Chris
He massive human being, but also a dude that's just. I can't remember the last time that we had a star that was like a star in college that went first round, first overall, that made it to the big leagues immediately and then succeeded immediately and had no adversity whatsoever. Like, that's borderline unheard. Of in the sport. And he's very, very marketable, which is great for us.
Katie Nolan
I feel like you could argue his adversity is his team.
Chris
That's a good point.
Katie Nolan
His team stinks.
Chris
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
They're very loud.
Chris
They're very bad. Yeah, that's the. So that's the other part of the Paul Skeens conversation that's so interesting is this guy is so good and his team is so bad that if the parts were to be like, listen, we're never going to contend while you're here. Just straight up, let's be honest with each other. We're never going to even have, like, we're never even going to sniff a winning record. So if they were to trade him right now, we can go back to the conversation we just had with Roman Anthony. Like the years of control. There's no possible way for the Pirates to trade Paul Skeens and then receive equal value from another team. Like, you'd have to trade your entire team to get him.
Katie Nolan
Him. So they're not gonna trade him.
Chris
They can't. Unless they want to lose the deal. Like day one automatically. It's like, I'm sure plenty of teams would be like, hey, we'll. We'll make you an offer.
Katie Nolan
But we could make him an offer.
Chris
We could.
Katie Nolan
I'd send you.
Chris
I would love to go.
Katie Nolan
They could have you.
Chris
I would. I would get traded to Pittsburgh for Paul Skins to go to the Red Sox. Yes.
Katie Nolan
Really? You would have to then cover the Pittsburgh Pirates. I think you're not thinking in the future.
Chris
That doesn't mean I can't watch the Red Sox.
Katie Nolan
True, but you'd have. Unless they were playing at the same time as the Pirates. Oh, you have that whole TV wall, don't you?
Chris
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
In his apartment. A full wall. Okay. Sorry. You moved to a new house?
Chris
Yes.
Katie Nolan
I thought you had an apartment that was across the street from something that was. This is the last time we talked about this.
Chris
Fenway Park. You ever heard of it? Yeah, I did. I lived across the street from Fenway.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Chris
But then I bought a house. Yeah. So. But I recreated the same thing. So I have.
Katie Nolan
How many TVs?
Chris
Nine.
Katie Nolan
What size do you have? Are some bigger than the others?
Chris
So it's like there's a 75 in the middle and then there's a horseshoe of 40 inch TVs around it. And then I watch all the game. It's like. It's like NASA, but for baseball.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. It's like dumb NASA. Yeah.
Chris
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
How are you? How do you have the. How do you know where to look?
Chris
You don't. It's called ocd. It's too much like, you just. That's why everyone's like, oh, baseball, so boring. It's so slow. My. I think it's great. I can just like, if someone throws a pitch over here and it's like this dude scratching his ass on this tv so I can look at this one, there's a good matchup over here. So, yeah, baseball is never boring for me.
Katie Nolan
Baseball's not boring. You just don't own enough television.
Chris
Correct? Yeah, yeah. You just don't have nine cable boxes.
Katie Nolan
The Rockies suck real bad.
Chris
Yeah, it's unfortunate.
Katie Nolan
9 and 48 as of Saturday. Now, that first number is wins, and that second number is. Is losses. Is. Are they going to be worse than what we already just last year saw with the White Sox, the historically worst team in baseball?
Chris
So from a win loss perspective, yes, I believe they're on pace. But then you can go the extra mile with run differential.
Katie Nolan
Okay.
Chris
Which I use that to kind of like, forecast if teams are going to be good or bad. And the Rockies, I believe, right now are on pace to have the worst run differential in MLB history by, like, negative 200 runs. Like, far. Like, there's the worst team of all time, and then there's like, the 2025 Rockies. It's crazy. They're not going to. They're not going to get any better because if they do have any valuable assets at the deadline, they'll be like, all right, here you go. So they're only going to get worse.
Katie Nolan
Isn't there ever. I feel like as a kid, as a young kid, I thought any group of guys on any day could get it done. And I feel like as I get.
Chris
Older, you're like, times.
Katie Nolan
You're like, you. You're like, you have to have somebody who's really good. You can't just have a bunch of guys who aren't good.
Chris
But can't you.
Katie Nolan
Wasn't that the whole point of, like, every movie we were ever shown as kids is that, like, you know, you.
Chris
Could do it and they have nine times, not a ton. Yeah, they did sign Chris Bryant, which, again, that's, like a sad sports story. I mean, like, how do you go from MVP of the league, breaking the Cubs curse in 2016? I want to say at one point, he was the highest selling jersey in MLB to, like, the Rockies being like, if you retire, it's fine. Like, we won't be mad. Like, that's where they're at right now. It's kind of. It's. It sucks.
Katie Nolan
Lovely stadium, though.
Chris
I love it there.
Katie Nolan
Lovely stadium.
Chris
Shout out to Denver.
Katie Nolan
Beautiful experience.
Chris
What a great city in the summertime.
Katie Nolan
Truly any time of the year, even in the winter, it feels like. There are days that it feels like summer, but then sometimes it randomly, like, snows.
Chris
Yeah. At the beginning of summer, they oddly brag about their ability to shovel. And shorts.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Chris
Yeah. If you ask the locals, they're like, you know, snows in the morning, out there shoveling in your shorts. And by lunchtime, weird.
Katie Nolan
I went to it. I went to an AFC championship game there, and I wore a T shirt. It was so nice. And that's in, what, January? So you know sports.
Chris
I know other sport. I know of them. I know they exist. Yeah.
Katie Nolan
Funny you should mention that. Oh, should we get to my bit? That was the perfect segue.
Chris
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
But then I'm looking at this. The Fenway Frank versus all other hot dog experiences, and I do feel like I need to ask you that before we move on.
Chris
So you're gonna hate my answer, but go ahead. Go ahead.
Katie Nolan
I mean, that was basically it. What? The Fenway Frank is undisputed. The best hot dog in baseball.
Chris
In the world. Yeah.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. Are you about to dispute.
Chris
No, but I might pivot.
Katie Nolan
Okay.
Chris
I have lobster rolls when I go to Fenway. Like, I'm not. Yeah.
Katie Nolan
17 televisions and lobster rolls. Okay, you guys, not here to be relatable.
Chris
Listen, I've had season tickets since 1998.
Katie Nolan
A million dollars. No season tickets.
Chris
You can't even give them away. Today I've been doing that. I've been going and do, like, doing these videos where I'm like, hey, I have two tickets to the game.
Katie Nolan
I know. I follow you on Instagram.
Chris
You do? And I see. See, she's been stalking me, and I hide them, and it's like, sometimes people will take days. They'll just be like, there is no rush to get these tickets. Which is unfortunate, but, yeah. I mean, you go to Fenway all the time. It's like, you can't just be eating hot dogs. All. That's crazy.
Katie Nolan
That is true. Because I think after about 17 hot dogs, you will have eaten a rat.
Chris
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
I think that, like, cumulatively, yes. Yeah.
Chris
Yeah. So, I mean, I'll have a hot dog, but I don't know that I could live off of hot dogs.
Katie Nolan
Okay.
Chris
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
My hottest take is that the best sausages at Fenway are outside. You can't get them inside.
Chris
That's Correct.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Chris
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
Okay, I'm glad that's correct.
Chris
Have you ever had the Dodger Dog?
Katie Nolan
Yeah. Not sucks, sucks, sucks. It's too thin. It's too. It's not.
Chris
Doesn't taste like a hot dog.
Katie Nolan
It doesn't snap.
Chris
There's nothing about it that I enjoy.
Katie Nolan
Snap when you bite into it.
Chris
Yeah. The 2018 World Series Games 3, 4, and 5, I basically lived off the Dodger Dog because it's probably 95% of the food that's offered at Dodger Stadium is the Dodger Dog. So even if you wanted something else, I don't think you're going to get it. Yeah, sucks.
Katie Nolan
They rave about it, too.
Chris
They should stop.
Katie Nolan
Greatest.
Chris
Yeah, they should absolutely stop doing that.
Katie Nolan
Also, while we're talking in stadium experiences, I went to. To Wrigley and they only. They're only doing oat ice cream.
Chris
I'm sorry.
Katie Nolan
I wanted to get ice cream in a. In a hat. I'm at a baseball game. Hello, I want ice cream in a helmet. And I went. Got all the way to the front of the line and I was like, can I get regular ice cream? And they were like, we only do oatly. And I was like, well, that's good for people that need it. Love that. Where can I go get ice cream? And the lady was like, I don't know. Not here.
Chris
What. What is oat ice cream?
Katie Nolan
It's made with oat milk.
Chris
Okay. I mean, honestly, like, you know, I know that you're like, I'm Boston. I drink. Like, I. New York changed me in a way that apparently did not change you. Like, I completely switched to Starbucks. I've dabbled with oat milk from here to there. I would try. I would try.
Katie Nolan
Not for that price. Not for the price of getting it in a. In a commemorative helmet. You're not going to pay. If I'm paying for this. I want it to be ice cream.
Chris
But did they. Did they offer you a free sample?
Katie Nolan
No.
Chris
So you weren't.
Katie Nolan
She probably should have. She said, you won't taste the difference. And I was like, you don't know me. How about this? You don't know me.
Chris
That's fair. I would be interested to see if I could taste the difference because I bet you I'm too dumb to notice it.
Katie Nolan
You probably just have dumbed down taste buds.
Chris
Like, you don't have a refined, like turkey burgers. And I mean, this is the best hamburger I've ever had in my life. No clue.
Katie Nolan
That's. You should see somebody about that.
Chris
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
That might be a medical issue twice a week. All right, this is our bit. Are you ready?
Chris
I'm ready for a wacky bit.
Katie Nolan
Something I think is important for casual fans to know. I've been trying to say this, is that you can be a Die Hard, basically. Basically expert of one sport and be completely ignorant about most other sports things. So, like tech? Yeah, I mean, definitely things. You don't know anything except sports. But baseball mostly. No baseball.
Chris
The first time I got pulled over, I pulled over on the left side of the highway.
Katie Nolan
How are you alive?
Chris
I shouldn't be. Oh, yeah, that was.
Katie Nolan
What did the cop say?
Chris
Oh, he was angry.
Katie Nolan
Was it here?
Chris
It was on the way to Rhode Island.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. And so he was talking like this.
Chris
He ripped the door open, and he was like, do you even have a driver's license? I was like, yeah. And he was like, well, you're about to not have one. And I think he felt bad after because he was like, oh, he's just.
Katie Nolan
Because you were crying.
Chris
I didn't cry.
Katie Nolan
You sobbed. I've cried every time I've gotten pulled over. Not on purpose. It has worked, but that's not why I did it.
Chris
What have you gotten pulled over for? Speeding.
Katie Nolan
Okay. On the way back from UMass a million years ago, visiting a friend, I was driving in the left lane. There were no other cars on the highway. It must have been, like, late at night. And I was in the left lane, and he said, are you aware that in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, driving in the left. The left lane is for passing? And I was like, yeah, but no one else is on the road. You can't travel in the left lane. Okay. And I've never made that mistake again.
Chris
I don't want to jinx it. I haven't been pulled over in probably, like, 15 years. My inspection sticker expired, like, six months ago. And I just got a puppy who refuses when I have to drive him places. Refuses to sit anywhere but my lap.
Jared Karabas
Just.
Chris
I'm like a walking. Please pull me over guy. And it hasn't happened to this point.
Katie Nolan
Okay. Now it's gonna happen.
Chris
Probably.
Katie Nolan
Anyone here is a cop. Look out for him.
Chris
Yeah, I'm parked over there.
Katie Nolan
Oh, it was two bits. We had two bits. Oh, let's try this one.
Chris
Okay.
Katie Nolan
And if it doesn't work, we'll pivot to the other one.
Chris
Okay.
Katie Nolan
So I wanted to show people that you can be an expert in one sport and know nothing about any other sport. So I'm going to give you. You have to name one of These two things you get to choose. Okay, can you name the home run leader for the 2024 Portland Sea Dogs or the leading scorer of the Boston Celtics?
Chris
The leading scorer for the Boston Celtics, I'm gonna guess is Jason Tatum.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, no, you got that right.
Chris
Okay, love that. I thought it was gonna be like a trick question with like, Jaylen Brown.
Katie Nolan
Okay. The player. The Red Sox. Red Sox, right.
Chris
So when Nomar retired, he said he did a press conference.
Katie Nolan
Oh, yeah.
Chris
And he was like, I'm retiring. I one day contract as a Red Sox. And it sounded weird when he said it. Like, I feel like you're supposed to say, like, I'm. I'm a player of the Red Sox. I'm a member of the Red Sox. I'm player for the Red Sox. Not like, I am a Red Sox.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Chris
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
Well, one of those.
Chris
Yeah, go ahead.
Katie Nolan
Named Jeremy, who hit five home runs for the 2003 Sox or named Jeremy. Boston Bruins goalie.
Chris
So I have a beef with Swayman.
Katie Nolan
Oh, yeah, you're blowing the bid up immediately. What's your beef with Swayman?
Chris
So I did the Nessen Jimmy Fun telethon, and I was interviewing Swayman and another member of the Bruins. I'm not. I don't know his name. I'm sorry. So my. My sister. For what? I am with the Red Sox. My sister is with the Bruins.
Katie Nolan
So she shout out your sister. Can she come here?
Chris
Yes. The worst Boston accent of all time.
Katie Nolan
Perfect.
Chris
She sat like. She sounds like how they sound in movies when it's like, fake perfect. But she's real perfect. Walking this earth.
Katie Nolan
Great.
Chris
Every day. So they showed the map of the United States, and they were like, you know, we need to hit every. Get a donation from every single state. And Swayman is from Alaska, and obviously no one from Alaska had donated. I don't know if they have cable or Internet there. And they were like, swayman, you know, you need to get your. Your folks back in Alaska to donate so we can check off Alaska. And I was like, you're from Alaska. And he was like, aren't you supposed to know that? And I was like, oh, no, I just Learned your name 20 minutes ago. Like, I baseball guy.
Katie Nolan
I didn't think you'd know who he was.
Chris
I do now.
Katie Nolan
So now I. I get that. I see that now. Okay, can you name the only four Red Sox pitchers to throw a no hitter in the last 50 years or one player playing in the Stanley cup.
Chris
Finals this year not named Brad Marchand?
Katie Nolan
Yes, obviously not named Brad March.
Chris
I The answer is no to the. I don't even know who the Panthers are playing.
Katie Nolan
I figured, yeah.
Chris
The last four Red Sox to throw no hitter. That'd be John Lester, Clay Buckholt, Hideo Nomo and Derek Lowe.
Katie Nolan
What the hell?
Chris
Yeah, Derek. I was supposed to. That was in 2002. I was supposed to be at that one. The Hideo Nomo one was on opening day in 2001, I think. And then Buckholtz was in 2007. It was a second big league start in September that year. And then, oh, eight. Was Lester against the Royals. Buchholz was against the Orioles. DLO was against Tampa.
Katie Nolan
This serve you.
Chris
And Hideo Nomo was in Baltimore against the Orioles. Yeah. Don Orsillo's first game on the broadcast. That game.
Katie Nolan
Well, shout out. Orsa Sillo.
Chris
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
We miss you.
Chris
We do.
Katie Nolan
All five members of the Los Angeles Dodgers 40 man roster who have won an MVP or one member of the Denver Nuggets roster who has one of them.
Chris
All right, so Freddie Freeman. Moki Bets. Clayton Kershaw. I need two more. Mvp.
Katie Nolan
No, one more. Oh, oh, wait. I said five. But there's only four.
Chris
Okay, so there's one more. That's one.
Katie Nolan
No, there's only four, I think.
Chris
Oh, Shohei Otani.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Chris
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
Okay, that's easy enough.
Chris
I have no idea who's on the Nuggets.
Katie Nolan
Nicole Jokic.
Chris
Don't know who that is.
Katie Nolan
That's crazy. That's crazy to me. I love that this is working. Can you name either the name of Shohei Ohtani's dog or the name of a single Major League Soccer team?
Chris
Okay, so his dog's name is Decoy. The soccer team.
Katie Nolan
That's it. You only have to do one.
Chris
I know, but I want to.
Katie Nolan
What about New England?
Chris
The Revolution.
Katie Nolan
There you go.
Chris
Yeah. Yeah.
Katie Nolan
We have a theme and we stick to it. The name of one of the two seldom used closers for the Colorado Rockies or the name of the Denver Broncos current quarterback.
Chris
Oh, is. Is Daniel Bard still closing games for the Rockies? No, he's not. Okay. He was. I think he's still on the team. That means he got demoted. That's very sad. I don't know. I think it's a trick question. You can't have a closer if you don't win games. So I. Who is the quarterback of the Broncos?
Katie Nolan
You're never going to get that.
Chris
It's not Sierra's boyfriend, Russell Wilson.
Katie Nolan
No, no.
Chris
Quarterback of the Broncos.
Katie Nolan
You're not going to get. This was the hardest one, I think I set you up for the hardest.
Chris
Give me his initials.
Katie Nolan
B.N. b.O. Nix.
Chris
I've never even heard that name in my life.
Katie Nolan
I knew that. I knew that about you.
Chris
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
What about one of three hall of Famers with over 300 homers who was born in the state of Oklahoma? One of three. Or any member of the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Chris
Okay.
Katie Nolan
Over 300 homers born in Oklahoma.
Chris
I think I know this one. Or I think I know of one. Was Scott Roland? No. Where's Scott Roland from? Google that right now because I'm gonna. I'm throwing the challenge flag. I'm gonna Google that right now.
Katie Nolan
Go for it. Don't Google.
Chris
Imagine.
Katie Nolan
Scott.
Chris
Oklahoma. Let's see.
Katie Nolan
Scott, literally the MVP of the league, is on the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Chris
Just for the record, I don't know who that is. Indiana. Damn it.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. So close.
Chris
I knew it was one of those weird states.
Katie Nolan
Flyover state. His words, not mine. They're pretty big names.
Chris
Three hall of famers.
Katie Nolan
Yep. Over 300 home runs.
Chris
Over 300 home runs from Oklahoma.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Chris
Can you give me a hint?
Katie Nolan
You should know this.
Chris
Who the hell. No. Oh, yeah. Oklahoma. Yeah. Everyone knows Oklahoma. Baseball.
Katie Nolan
Disney. That's my hint.
Chris
Disney. Mickey Mantle.
Katie Nolan
Yes.
Chris
Okay.
Katie Nolan
All right. So it was a good hint.
Chris
Okay. I have no idea what the other thing was. What was the other thing?
Katie Nolan
What other thing? Oh, Oklahoma City Thunder.
Chris
Yeah. Is. What's his name, Russell Westbrook on that team?
Katie Nolan
No, he is on the Nuggets.
Chris
Okay.
Katie Nolan
Shay Gilgis. Alexander.
Chris
No idea who that is.
Katie Nolan
You have no idea who that is?
Chris
No idea.
Katie Nolan
And that's the point. And that's what I'm saying. Anyone can be a casual, even an expert. The other thing was going to be. No, we'll just. We won't do that. Because what we should do is talk to the people that are in the room with us, because that's what I care more about.
Chris
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
So we're going to take questions. Brady is the producer of our little podcast. Funny enough, this is like the second time I've met him in person because he's a remote. He lives far away. So this is an exciting experience for all of us. If anybody has a question, Brady will come bring you a microphone. I have some here that you guys have submitted, but I feel like it's better if you say them out loud. So does anybody want to ask? Oh, yeah. Let's go. Brady, you put those shoes to use.
Jared Karabas
First of all, want to just congratulate.
Chris
You on the podcast and shout out to Dan.
Katie Nolan
I'll be seeing him Next week. So shout out Dan. That's my fiance. Yeah. So Mark Kotze, the manager of the Oakland Athletics or the sorry, West Sack Athletics. Yeah. The blank athletic. Yes. Did the walk of shame last week when he got thrown out of the.
Chris
Game and to the outfield because they're.
Katie Nolan
Into minor league, you know, stadium. I want to know your best walk of shame story. Oh, Jesus Christ. That's not where I thought that was gonna go.
Chris
I'm like, ra. Racking my brain for, like, Sacramento Trivia.
Katie Nolan
And then you're like, oh, I don't think I can tell my worst walk of shame story. It certainly involves basketball shorts and high heels. Yeah, that I know for sure. It's a shoe that doesn't go with an outfit, but you don't want to put an outfit. You're not going to get back into your dress from the fraternity formal, so you wear the shorts and put the heels on. I'm sure you can relate.
Chris
Sure.
Katie Nolan
That's it. That's probably my worst walk of shame. There has to be one that's better. You tell yours while I think of one.
Chris
A couple of my Buddies went to UMass Dartmouth, and they have this thing called the Dart Bus, which is the van that takes you all around campus. My friend Mike, he. He likes. He likes to drink. And we were on the DART bus, and we were doing, like, you know, a bunch of stops around campus, and he actually fell asleep on the DART bus and just rode it for the entire night. And we went to a party. I went back with a. With a nice lady and woke up in the morning and called one of my friends that I was with. I was like, where's Mike? He's like, mike's in jail, dude. And I was like, what? He's like, yeah, he. He fell asleep on the DART bus, and I was like, like, okay. So then my phone died.
Katie Nolan
Oh, no.
Chris
And was separated from my friends.
Katie Nolan
It's a long story.
Chris
Had to walk. My walk of shame was to the police station to retrieve my friend who was in the drunk tank for the evening. So because of that, I ended up writing down all of my friends phone numbers and putting them on, like, a sticky note and keeping that in my wallet for if ever my phone dies and I need to get in touch with my friends.
Katie Nolan
Smart. Because really, phones have taught us to forget everybody's. I could not tell you my aforementioned fiance's phone number. Do not know it. We are getting married.
Chris
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
So pretty crazy. Very good question. Also, remember in college when somebody would puke out your window and then it would be on the side of your car and then you'd have to, like, park your car.
Chris
My dog does that now.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Chris
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
That's great. That's great.
Chris
Good guy.
Katie Nolan
Any other questions that are hopefully more like that? I mean, I can read one of these if nobody has any, but I. Yes.
Brady
Hi.
Jared Karabas
I am a Seattle Mariners fan.
Katie Nolan
Shout out. Fun Fan base. We are, and I believe we're the.
Jared Karabas
Only team that has never made it to a World Series. I believe that's still true.
Katie Nolan
Maybe you would know. Do we. I think. I think so. Should I have any hope with this.
Jared Karabas
Generation, with Julio and Cal and the pitching we have?
Katie Nolan
I say yes. But you give your diagnosis.
Chris
I do, too. I say yes. I think the Mariners have kind of stood strong in their beliefs on. We have a ton of really good pitching, and, yeah, we can't really hit all that well, but we're not going to trade from our surplus of pitching to supplement our lack of hitting. They're kind of just like, eventually this whole limiting runs instead of scoring runs thing is going to work out. I resent the Seattle Mariners because I actually went to that 18 inning playoff game where they lost one to nothing. And it was their first playoff game in 20 something years. And the crowd was standing for the entire game. It was very painful to stand.
Katie Nolan
Was that like two, three years ago?
Chris
2022.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. Oh, my God. Smart man. That was. We're all rooting for you.
Chris
One nothing ball game that I flew across the country for. Missed my cousin's wedding. He still resents me for it. I understand.
Katie Nolan
I would.
Chris
I completely get it. Yep.
Katie Nolan
Jared, I think this question is for you. What specific strategies and funding priorities do you have in place to address the chronic pothole issues across Boston's neighborhoods?
Chris
Well, you know, it's something that we talk about daily. You know, we meet on Tuesday mornings, and we're. We're just trying to get to the bottom of it. And, you know, we've been. We've been talking to John Cena because he's retiring. I don't know if you heard about this in December. He's retiring. And the thing about John is he kind of belongs to, like, nationally. He doesn't really claim Boston. So now he's trying to find a way to, like, how do I give back to my city and become a Boston guy? So we're contacting John Cena about the pothole issue.
Katie Nolan
Brilliant. Yeah, brilliant. I'm gonna say this one because I just want to shout out my producers. How did you choose the Casualties. That's what we call our producers. To be your producers. And did you know right away Isabella would be the perfect representative for all casuals? Not that I don't love them. I didn't choose them. They work at Sirius, which is where I do my podcast. But part of the reason I chose Serious is because I met them before and I was like, these are people that I can talk about sports with and that I love. Isabella is in the. She's our only producer that's in New York with me while we do the podcast. And pretty much right away talking to her, we figured that the appetite for sports was there, her curiosity was there, and then by the end of the first episode, to see how quickly she was passionate about sports. At this point, I've usually. I've given this speech of like, Isabella's our non sports fan, but I can't even say that anymore because she is so passionate about the Knicks that I'm worried about her if they don't. When they don't pull this off, I'm worried about.
Jared Karabas
She doesn't know how to. She hasn't been through losses yet.
Katie Nolan
Yes. And we're gonna have to help her through.
Jared Karabas
I'm worried that it will just destroy her. She's up so high right now. Her first year as a Knick fan.
Katie Nolan
We do have to keep her, like, distracted with other stuff so that she doesn't swear off sports entirely if the Knicks lose, because that would really stink. Would you ever attempt the 999 challenge again? No. That's nine beers, nine hot dogs in nine innings. Ever since they instituted the pitch clock, I would not recommend attempting to do that. You really needed a game that was going to take all day to complete that. I fell asleep on the 7 and I don't recommend that at all. Waking up in the middle of the day drunk, full of hot dog. You want more? Question.
Jared Karabas
We have one more in the crowd.
Katie Nolan
Yes. Okay. And then we'll close it out.
Isabella
Hi, Kate. Big fan.
Katie Nolan
Been wanting to see you live for a long time.
Isabella
So this is very exciting. I'm moving to Richmond, Virginia soon to live with my girlfriend. I would rather stay here probably, but there's no point professional sports team there. So I'm wondering how should I, like.
Katie Nolan
Stay connected to sports teams? Okay. Well, the good thing is you don't have to change teams. There's no team to change to. So you'll just stay Boston and Nessen. How expensive is the Nesin for when you're not. I stole somebody's login for mlb TV that has no blackout restrictions. It's the greatest thing I've ever had. And the second that person changes is their password. I'm screwed. But I'm sure it can't. You get Nessen 360?
Chris
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
I mean, and you can watch the socks.
Chris
What? Who's your favorite team?
Isabella
You guys aren't gonna like my answer. Oh, I'm not from Boston.
Chris
Oh, no.
Isabella
My family's from New York.
Katie Nolan
Oh, my God. What's wrong with you?
Isabella
I know. I'm so.
Katie Nolan
You're a Yankees fan. Yeah.
Chris
But, like, what's your favorite? Is baseball your favorite sport?
Isabella
I mean, I kind of like all of them. I'm also a Giants fan.
Katie Nolan
What's wrong with you?
Isabella
A lot.
Chris
You could just stop watching sports if you want.
Isabella
No, I really like basketball.
Katie Nolan
Okay.
Isabella
And I kind of followed LeBron for.
Katie Nolan
A while, but now I've chosen the Pistons because that was a fun series against the Knicks. Yeah, that was fun. Yeah. Yeah. A few years ago, they were terrible.
Isabella
So I was like.
Katie Nolan
I'm just. So, what do you want to stay in touch with?
Isabella
I like the Bruins.
Katie Nolan
Okay.
Isabella
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
Also been a tough couple years. Yep. So what do you. What. What can I help you with staying in touch with, like, being a Boston person?
Isabella
Yeah, I guess. But also just, like, you know, I can't go to any games in Richmond.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. What's. Brady, you're closer to Richmond. Where are you? You're in.
Jared Karabas
I'm in Maryland. Richmond's down there. We're talking two and a half, three hours.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. Well, racing. Don't they do a lot of race? No.
Jared Karabas
Good NASCAR track in Richmond.
Katie Nolan
Yeah.
Chris
Just look at me. When you said racing, I don't know.
Katie Nolan
I needed help. I needed an assist. God forbid.
Isabella
They do have a minor league team there.
Katie Nolan
Okay. And minor league baseball rules. Does it? Yes. It's very fun to go to. Live.
Chris
And they have excellent merch.
Katie Nolan
Good merch. They do fun promotions.
Jared Karabas
The Richmond Flying Squirrels hat is a 10 out of 10.
Katie Nolan
Oh, flying squirrels. What a great team. That's good.
Isabella
Okay. It's like.
Katie Nolan
Okay, try it. Try it on, like, a really nice day. Go to a. A game. And also remember, you're doing this for love. Love. I am. Yes. And love conquers all.
Chris
It does.
Katie Nolan
Even minor league baseball. So I think, yeah, go to minor league baseball games and then just, like, go on trips. Use trips to go to sporting events. I think that makes the most. What's the. Going to be the closest WNBA franchise to Richmond, Virginia?
Isabella
The Mystics, which, I mean, they're they're up and coming. They have a few rookies that are.
Katie Nolan
That's right.
Isabella
So.
Katie Nolan
And. But it's not close, as we just established. It's like an hour and a half. It's not too bad. All right, so that'll be fine. And we'll keep you in our hearts. Is that good? Good? Amazing. Good luck with your move. Moving sucks. It does. It's really the worst. All right, that's it. Because I have to. We have to go. Thank you guys so much for coming. I've never done a live podcast of my own before, and I like this. So hopefully we'll do it more often with. I'd actually prefer less people. This is still too many people for me. This is very stressful. But thank you all for coming. And check out casuals. You can get it wherever you get your podcasts. Unless you get your podcasts on YouTube, we're not there yet, but we will be. And you can find Jared. You can follow him on Instagram, but then you're expected to know every single thing he does.
Chris
Yeah, a lot of pressure.
Katie Nolan
It's just aradcarabas.
Chris
I think so. Yeah.
Katie Nolan
He thinks. And. And on section 10 and baseball is Dead is his other podcast. Okay, cool. Thanks, everybody. All right. Big thanks to Jared for doing that, for coming out on a Saturday. Really appreciate it. And again, shout out to everybody who came. It was so nice to see you and nice to meet some of you and terrible to meet others of you. I'm just kidding. I just meant I only met a couple people. I didn't meet everybody. Chris, It's Tuesday, so we have to let people know what to watch if they want to watch sports this week. What do you got?
Brady
Yeah, we haven't spoken about the NHL so far. The Stanley cup playoffs a set. Panthers and Oilers. I'm assuming we're all in the Oilers bandwagon for this series.
Katie Nolan
Isabella.
Isabella
Yeah, I'll root for the Oilers.
Katie Nolan
Thank you.
Jared Karabas
We owe Canada one.
Isabella
Yeah.
Brady
Game one for that series will be tomorrow night at 8pm it's been like three weeks.
Katie Nolan
It's been so long since they played that last series. Sorry. Go ahead, Chris. I keep in rain interrupting you.
Brady
I pretty much said all I wanted to say about that one.
Katie Nolan
But.
Brady
No, watch it because, like, we've all become pretty big hockey fans. I think in the playoffs, that's when most people pay attention.
Isabella
Oh, the Oilers are blue and orange like the Knicks. Yeah. Let's go for the fucking Oilers.
Katie Nolan
Sorry. I love that. I love that. So write that down. She's not rooting for the Panthers at all.
Isabella
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
This is important for me. Okay. What else can we watch?
Brady
So also on Wednesday, at the same time as the NHL Stanley cup game.
Katie Nolan
One, we also screen. This is second screen content because it's.
Brady
On your laptop, which is very easy.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, totally. Very easy on its own.
Brady
Sometimes on YouTube TV they allow you to do the split screen. I don't know if they're going to have both of these games up, but I wouldn't be surprised if you can get these at the same time. But the women's College Softball World Series will be on tomorrow at 8:00pm Eastern. That'll be between number six, Texas and number 12 Texas Tech. You can watch that game on ESPN.
Katie Nolan
Texas Tech 1. I had not seen that. I thought who'd they play? They played Oklahoma.
Jared Karabas
Oklahoma is going for the five, Pete.
Katie Nolan
I know. I can't believe.
Brady
We actually will have some additional talk about those earlier matchups on Thursday because we had a whole bunch of people calling in and emailing in a. Did you see that?
Katie Nolan
Yes.
Brady
So we'll. We'll touch on.
Katie Nolan
It's working. It's catching on. Did you see that line? Okay, but emails don't count. I feel you have to call in and go, oh, my gosh.
Brady
But there were some people. The emails were because people were unable to call from international.
Katie Nolan
Oh, okay. Then it's allowed. Sorry.
Brady
I said that if you are emailing from outside of the US you are allowed otherwise.
Katie Nolan
And don't lie and don't say your phone.
Isabella
A workaround. A workaround for those people. Record a voice memo and then email.
Katie Nolan
It and email it. Ooh, Isabella's out here solving problems.
Jared Karabas
Young people just don't make phone calls. Reverse agents.
Katie Nolan
You're so right. Okay, Chris, what else? One more thing.
Brady
And then Thursday we've got a WNBA double header. The first game is Isabella's undefeated New York Liberty. Shout out at Brady's mystics.
Jared Karabas
Yeah.
Brady
At 7:30pm Eastern on prime.
Katie Nolan
Doing well.
Brady
I think they're now back to under 500.
Katie Nolan
Okay, never mind. They stayed.
Brady
That's okay.
Jared Karabas
Came out the gate hot.
Katie Nolan
They sure did.
Brady
That game's at 7:30 Eastern on Prime. And then straight after that, Katie fully defeated Valkyries.
Katie Nolan
I think we have a win.
Brady
Yeah. Yeah.
Katie Nolan
Two wins. Shout out, my gals.
Brady
You're at. You're at mercury.
Katie Nolan
Okay.
Brady
At 10pm Eastern. That game also on Prime. So check out that WNBA doubleheader Thursday night starting at 7:30pm to Valhalla.

Episode: Isabella Discovers Sports Anger | Plus Bostoning with Jared Carrabis
Release Date: June 3, 2025
Casuals with Katie Nolan, hosted by Katie Nolan and brought to listeners by SiriusXM, is a vibrant sports podcast designed for everyone from the sports-curious to the sports-obsessed. In this episode, titled "Isabella Discovers Sports Anger | Plus Bostoning with Jared Carrabis," Katie is joined by a rotating cast of friends, including Isabella, Chris, Brady, and special guest Jared Carrabis. The episode delves into the emotional rollercoaster of being a sports fan, shares personal sports-related frustrations, and features a live interview from the WBUR Festival with Jared Carrabis.
The episode kicks off with Isabella expressing her frustration over the New York Knicks' recent loss to the Indiana Pacers in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals.
Katie empathizes with Isabella's struggle, highlighting the bittersweet nature of sports fandom where victories and losses deeply affect fans' emotions.
Isabella shares her ritual of keeping a "Go Knicks" Post-it note on her TV, which became a source of conflict when she touched the Larry O'Brien Trophy, believing it to be cursed.
This conversation underscores the intense emotional investment fans have in their teams and the coping mechanisms they adopt to handle losses.
Brady shares a poignant moment from his past when his favorite football team, Carlton, lost a crucial game, leading him to a therapeutic walk in the rain.
The discussion transitions to Jared's nostalgic recounting of a childhood incident involving Jeffrey Mayer and a controversial play that continues to haunt him.
These stories highlight how sports moments can leave lasting emotional impacts on fans, shaping their loyalty and sometimes fostering a sense of rivalry or schadenfreude.
Katie introduces a significant sports broadcasting update: NBA on TNT is ending after 35 seasons. The segment pays homage to John Brankus, the beloved host of the Emmy-winning sports science show, who recently passed away after battling depression.
Katie underscores the importance of mental health support, providing listeners with resources:
This segment serves as a heartfelt tribute to Brankus and a reminder of the critical role mental health plays in the lives of sports personalities and fans alike.
Brady shares recent sports news, including the PDC final where Luke Litler lost to Luke Humphries in a tightly contested match, and the exciting new broadcast deal that will bring more darts events to NBC’s Peacock streaming service.
Additionally, the segment covers the recent Champions League final where PSG Paris Saint-Germain defeated Inter Milan 5-0, followed by chaotic riots in the streets of Paris resulting in multiple casualties and arrests.
The discussion briefly touches on the cultural impact of sports events and the sometimes volatile emotions they can stir in crowds.
The highlight of the episode is a live interview with Jared Carrabis, a well-known sports podcaster. Jared shares his journey in sports podcasting, including the creation of his own shows "Section 10" and "Baseball is Dead."
Katie and Chris engage in a humorous and candid conversation with Jared about the challenges and humorous mishaps that come with live sports broadcasting, such as Chris’s anecdote about his flawed first pitch attempt at Fenway Park. The interview also delves into the complexities of sports management, player contracts, and team dynamics, particularly focusing on the Boston Red Sox's current season struggles and player injuries.
Jared discusses his interactions with sports figures, the logistics of sports team management, and the emotional toll of being a dedicated team supporter despite ongoing struggles.
As the episode nears its end, Katie summarizes key upcoming sports events for listeners to watch, including NHL Stanley Cup playoffs featuring the Florida Panthers and Edmonton Oilers, the Women's College Softball World Series, and WNBA doubleheaders featuring the New York Liberty and the Vegas Aces.
The team encourages listeners to stay connected with their favorite sports and emphasizes the value of sports in fostering community and personal growth.
Isabella (01:11):
"I don't love it. Can I leave this recording right now?"
Jared Karabas (10:11):
"Jeffrey Mayer steals that ball... just running around in the streets."
Katie Nolan (24:31):
"988 is the suicide and crisis lifeline... it's 24 hours a day, seven days a week."
Brady (25:16):
"Luke Litler lost 11 legs to eight and now his... he’ll be partnering with Luke Humphries."
Jared Karabas (43:06):
"Started the podcast 'Section 10'... evolved into the cult that it is today."
Chris (50:02):
"The Red Sox did a poor job communicating... Devers could have gone about it a little bit more, friendlier."
This episode of Casuals with Katie Nolan masterfully balances heartfelt discussions about the emotional bonds fans have with their teams, humorous anecdotes from personal experiences, and insightful interviews with industry peers like Jared Carrabis. From navigating the pain of a sports loss to celebrating the enduring passion that keeps fans engaged, Katie and her co-hosts offer a relatable and entertaining exploration of what it means to be a sports enthusiast without the intensity often associated with traditional sports talk shows.
