Hello, and welcome to episode two of Casuals. I'm your host, Katie Nolan. Casuals is a podcast for, you know, new sports fans, casual sports fans, old sports fans that are bored by sports podcasts. We're here, we're talking about sports most of the time, but we're also talking about life and usually the Internet. Today on the podcast, it's our first Thursday episode, we've got a big guest. DK Metcalf is here. We're gonna talk to him about. Well, we did a baking show together, so we'll probably talk about that a little bit. Kind of a funny thing, but, you know, also, he's DK Metcalf. He's a very good football player for. Currently the Seahawks. But who's to say before we get to dk, though, you guys know this now because you're. You're seasoned vets. With this podcast, we start every pod with a yap, and that's just me talking to you about whatever's running through this brain of mine. And today, I know we've only been a podcast for one day to you, but, like, we've practiced some of these, and this is the truest yap of all. I don't have a real point here, but this thing's been stacked, stuck in my craw, and I figured we'd talk about that a little bit. What's up with the. With the online? What's going on on the Internet? What is up, you guys? I feel like, look, I've been online for a while. Don't make me say how long. I'm wearing a child's outfit, so please don't make me say how long it is. I've been on the Internet. But, like, it's different out there right now. It's. It's. And it's scary different. I feel like I used to live in a world where, yes, there's bad stuff out there, but you at least, like, understood what truth was. There was, like, objective truth mostly to be found on, like, little basic issues. It wasn't Every single thing wasn't a question mark. Perhaps I'm misremembering, but I feel like there were some periods and a couple a lot of exclamation points. But now it's just all like, does this. What is this person's interest in telling me this? Do I have to question everybody's motive on everything all the time? I miss the days when you could just hear. Hear someone say something and go, well, that's checks out. And now it's like, well, who's. Why. Why would you be saying this? And I'll tell you where I. I'll give you, like, something to hold on to here in this murky yap. I'm going through that Blake Lively situation, and, no, I don't want to talk about it in the sense of, like, Katie's going to share her opinion on who's right and who's wrong, because I don't know. I don. What I know is that when it first came out, when that story first hit, when it was first presented to us, the public, as like, this girl's a real problem. Remember all these things you don't like about her. Here's an old interview of her being a real bitch. I'll tell you what. I bought it. I bought it. I bought it. And then I got rocked when the lawsuit came out that alleged that she was. That this was, like, a campaign, that this is, in fact, what this PR firm that Justin Baldoni hired does. They infect the narrative online. They inject fake opinions into an opinion party. And then people get confused because you read an opinion and you go like, oh, people seem to think this. Whether we all want to act like we're independent thinkers or not. When you see enough people thinking something, you go like, oh, my. I guess I'm. That does make sense. And it can convince you. It's very convincing. Yes. We can all pretend. Not me. Not me. I'm. I can resist misinformation. Sure, let's all pretend that. But, like, it happens. And so then you find out that, like, they're in the narrative, and then the stuff comes out that, like, look, I don't know again, who's at fault in this whole situation. But I will say it rocked me because I recognize in that an old thing that I've been through, like, an old part of me that I've consciously grown out of. It's like, I don't want to get into a whole. I don't want this. You have to be 75 minutes. So I'm afraid To even say a phrase that's going to get really loaded, and everyone's going to get mad. I'm a woman. I grew up with internalized misogyny. I admit that about myself. Now I'm embarrassed about it. I don't want to spend a lot of time talking about it. It's something I constantly work on. I thought I was doing the work, and I thought I was crushing it. And then when I found out that the Blake Lively thing was actually maybe me, maybe me getting got. I was like, damn it. I thought we were doing good on this. And I'm seeing a lot of it, and I'm seeing a lot of people not have that reaction of, like, let me check myself. Let me do the work. And I think we gotta. I. I don't know. I'm just annoyed by the Internet being this, like, place where everybody's just screaming now. Screaming about, oh, about a woman that they don't like. And then when they. A man says that, he's like, yeah, I don't like that woman either. And then they're like, this man's the best man. And you're like, okay, well, don't we see what's happening here? I just feel like, can we just, like, go back to the way it was? We go back to the way when it was, like, it was just, like, people talking and saying what they thought, People talking and being like, I don't know everything. But here's what I think. Why is there so much money in controlling what people like, riling people up? Like, it's. Once I started noticing, like, the best type of content, the thing that does the most numbers and therefore does the most money and gets you the most famous is the stuff that, like, pisses people off. I was like, well, then why does anybody listen to anything? Because if. If you're solely trying to piss me off, your intention isn't to inform me. It's to get me mad. Because getting me mad makes me listen to you and watch you. And so then you just have, like, mad people telling us what we need to talk about. Why can't we all just, like, chill out? Why can't we all just, like, chill out and, like, laugh at stuff? Why is everybody screaming? Why is everybody mean? So that's the. Yeah. You know, sometimes you're thinking about something and you're like, there's a point, and I'm gonna arrive at it. And then sometimes you don't. I'm just feeling like, I don't know. I watched a thing. There's I'm avoiding proper nouns on purpose. I just watched, like, a specific thing happen or like a, you know, snark subreddits. You know, where people go to, like, bitch. I don't think they're, like, in general, the worst thing on earth. I don't think they're probably very health. But I. Whatever about them, you know, I'm not saying shut them all down, but I went to a snark subreddit where they're snarking on this woman, a woman that look. And you can dislike a woman and not be a misogynist. Let's just say that for anybody who's going to play dumb here, you can have women that you have an opinion on that you're like, that's not my. That's. I don't like that person. But they're snarking on this woman. And then somebody outside of their community says something really negative about that woman, and they lift that person up as like, yeah, this person gets it. This guy's on our side. And I happen to know that guy's not on your side at all. That guy hates all. All of us. That guy hates women. That guy's been hating women out loud for a really long time. You don't know that in the snark subreddit because you don't know this guy, because this guy has never spoken to you as an audience because he doesn't think about you like that, because he doesn't respect you like that. But now he's talking negatively about this woman you don't like. And ironically, you don't like her because you think she's not a girl's girl. And I'm watching you lift up this guy being like, this guy's our king. And I want to be like, no, he's not. No, he's not. And I don't know what the answer is. Do your own research. Wow, look at me. I'm Aaron Rodgers. I don't know. I don't know what the answer is. I just like, is anybody else feeling this? There we go. Sound off in the comments about how you're a mad. This isn't a YouTube show. And we get it. We will get there. We're getting there. You guys, we love you. We want it, too. But B, are you also like, what the fuck, dude? Why is everybody mad and yelling and is everybody nuts? Or is it me? It's probably me. I mean, that's the yappiest yap I think we're ever gonna get. That's the nature of the yap. Welcome to my brain. I also, Chris, this is a good time to mention I'd love us to start putting in the podcast in the description a time code so that the lovely listeners at home are like, hey, I don't wanna do the yap. They can go right to the description. And you guys will. There's like a. A time code. Get to that. And that's where you'll talk to dk. Great. I love that. As a. As a plan. So let's just go chat to DK. He wasn't in the room for this disclaimer. DK's not, like, sitting here staring at me while I yap about whatever's going on on the Internet. He probably doesn't even know what a subreddit is. Let's ask him. Hi, dk. So thank you for being here. I appreciate it very much. On our second episode of the podcast. How have you been?
DK Metcalf
I've been pretty good. Have you.
Katie Nolan
I've been. I've been pretty good as people. I think people will have seen by now. We're announcing today that we both appeared on a. An episode of the Great American Baking show over in London. We had a little baking competition. Are you excited for people to see your skills in the kitchen?
DK Metcalf
I am. I'm very excited for people to see my baking skills in the kitchen because I don't think, you know, they. They'd be expecting it from me. So excited for the show to come out, excited for everybody to see the results. So I think it's going to be a fun episode.
Katie Nolan
It was the first time in a long time that I had competed against athletes in any type of way. I usually just watch you guys compete against each other, and, boy, what an interesting experience it is. You all take every competition in your life as seriously as the one that we watch you do on Sundays.
DK Metcalf
Yeah. Even our church league basketball team, huh?
Katie Nolan
Yeah, it was fun. It was a fun time. We were. I was the bench right behind DK's. You'll see when you watch the show. It's out on in February, February 3rd, I think, to get the full plug in on Roku. You guys can watch it on Roku. Yeah, we had, like a. I was trying to be helpful to you. You maybe weren't reciprocating that to me, and that's fine, but I feel like we had a good, like, alliance, kinda. What I'm saying is say into the camera that we're friends.
DK Metcalf
No, I mean, at the beginning. No. But toward the end, yeah, we. You kind of are an acquired taste in the kitchen.
Katie Nolan
Have you kept in touch with your girl Pru Leith at all? Pru from the baking show that you loved so much?
DK Metcalf
I ain't hit my baby up in a minute, but hey, hope she doing good. Shout out, Pru.
Katie Nolan
You loved Pru. You and Pru really had something special.
DK Metcalf
That is something special. I can't wait to see her again. Give a big hug.
Katie Nolan
She was rooting for you. She was, like, wearing her allegiances clearly on her sleeve. She wanted you to win. It was a shoo in for you. Didn't we also find out that she writes.
DK Metcalf
Yes. Dark novels or, like sexual novels or something like that?
Katie Nolan
Yeah, I think she writes, like, erotic fiction. I haven't looked it up. I meant to. I'll have to get us a book. Maybe you can read it after Art of War. You can read Prue Leith's.
DK Metcalf
Yeah, I'll make sure. Amazon Filthy.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, put it on your Amazon wish list so that Normani can buy you Pru Leith's romance novel. That's a mad lib of a sentence that I've never heard.
DK Metcalf
Mixing business with pleasure. We don't do that.
Katie Nolan
Can we talk about my favorite thing about you? What is that your girlfriend? How's Normani?
DK Metcalf
She's doing pretty good. She's still sleeping right now.
Katie Nolan
Good. Oh, God, I'm so jealous. That should be me, but I had to go and start a podcast. Her album came out since I saw you last. Do you have a favorite song on Dopamine?
DK Metcalf
Yes, my favorite song on Dopamine is Distance. I listen to that.
Katie Nolan
Distance.
DK Metcalf
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
Okay. I don't know him by name, so after this, I'm going to go back and listen to it now, knowing that it's your favorite song. How long have you two been. Been dating?
DK Metcalf
Two and a half years. Going on three.
Katie Nolan
Okay. That's a good.
DK Metcalf
Yeah. Getting pretty serious.
Katie Nolan
Getting pretty serious.
DK Metcalf
Pretty serious.
Katie Nolan
Getting pretty serious.
DK Metcalf
See you throwing out.
Katie Nolan
I'm just. I just. Are you getting pretty serious?
DK Metcalf
Yeah, we getting pretty serious. Yeah.
Katie Nolan
Okay. And you got. You live together and.
DK Metcalf
No, ma'am, we haven't taken that step.
Katie Nolan
That's okay. That's. That's good. That's. You know, but what you're. That's the old way of doing it, so that's good. But you know, you can live together as soon as you. If you were to.
DK Metcalf
Yeah, if I were to pop the question.
Katie Nolan
You could. And that just. I was just saying. Anyway, Football. You play it. How was this? How was the season for you? How'd you feel.
DK Metcalf
I think we did pretty good. We outdid everybody. Outdid everybody's expectations, in my opinion. But, you know, we still got some work to do with the team that we had. I felt like we could have made a playoff push, but we let some games get away. But, you know, I think Coach Mike is doing a great job in the building with acquiring pieces to, you know, build his dream team to, you know, go on and try to accomplish the mission that everybody set out for and let's try to win the Super Bowl. So I think it was a good first step, especially for him in his first year.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, that's always fun, a first year coach, seeing how that goes. And so you like him. You're a good. How about the. Pete Carroll may be coming back to the league. Have you heard this? That he might be. How. That'd be crazy for you.
DK Metcalf
A couple interview jobs, but, you know, hopefully he lands one. You know, I'm excited to see what he does next, but he's a. He's a great coach, in my opinion. One of probably the best coaches I've ever had.
Katie Nolan
That weird? Would that be weird to play against? Does that feel like trying to relate it to, like, a regular human experience? Is that like seeing an ex at a party or is it like, what's that vibe?
DK Metcalf
I mean, it was a good ex.
Katie Nolan
Right? Right. Which we all have. Right? We all have exes we're still friends with. That's normal.
DK Metcalf
Ah, I don't.
Katie Nolan
I don't think I do either. There's just got to be a wall there. Shut the door. You know, I don't need the.
DK Metcalf
Right. But I think he'll. He'll get another shot and he's going to do great at, you know, his next landing spot, in my opinion.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. And you'll give him a big hug after the game if you play against him, right? Yeah. Oh, that's sweet. I was kind of looking for you to be like. No, square up coach.
DK Metcalf
Nah, he. He was too good to me.
Katie Nolan
Speaking of squaring up, last time I saw you, you had. You were on page one of the Art of War. Where are we in the book now?
DK Metcalf
I put it down. I put Art of War down. I started reading another book.
Katie Nolan
What book?
DK Metcalf
I started reading Behold a Pale Horse.
Katie Nolan
I don't know what that is. Should I know what that is?
DK Metcalf
I mean, it's about a ex CIA agent, you know, spilling out all the beans.
Katie Nolan
Oh, so it's like a real. Yeah, it's based in, like, real. Okay, so it's not. I mean, technically, the Art of War is somebody spilling all the beans, is it not?
DK Metcalf
But, yeah, it's like the. How they. You know, the sentence structure.
Katie Nolan
A little slow. Not as easy of a read.
DK Metcalf
Why you had to ask about the Art of War, though?
Katie Nolan
Because I thought it was very funny that the first time I met you, you were in the makeup chair, which famously, men are in the makeup chair for 40 seconds. And DK came in with a book, and I was like, look at that. DK Metcalf's gonna read. And you opened it, cracked it open to the very first page, and the book was the Art of War. It's just very funny to think of you being like, today's the day. I'm getting this reading in. I'm going to learn these tactics today while I get this powder put on my face.
DK Metcalf
And I was in there for two minutes and two left. Yeah, you're not finishing that book yet.
Katie Nolan
And I was right. Did you get to page five at least?
DK Metcalf
Yeah, I got. I got, like, to page 30 in the book, and I just put it down.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. So anything after page, if you're playing against DK Metcalf, any strategy mentioned after page 30, he's not familiar with. So come at him with some of that. Listen, I wanted to. I've got a lot of questions, but one part that's not a question is I want to say that, like, Massachusetts is a really lovely place. Massachusetts. Living in Massachusetts is awesome. And I just wanted you to know that. That, like, it would be cool for you at some point in your life if you wanted to, if that's how the stars aligned. I think you would really like living in Massachusetts. Do you have any. Does that. Do you agree, you think?
DK Metcalf
No.
Katie Nolan
What? You couldn't see yourself ever living in Massachusetts?
DK Metcalf
Look at how long it's taking you to say the word no. It's not a desirable place, in my opinion.
Katie Nolan
Aw, man. Are you sure? Well, luckily, it's not really up to your opinion. Hmm.
DK Metcalf
I said great organization.
Katie Nolan
Yes, of course, some may say the best. Some could say the best organization. I understand you wouldn't. But some could say. I didn't know. You didn't tell me that you won the MVP at the Celebrity All Star basketball game one year.
DK Metcalf
I mean, I didn't know I was supposed to. Like, how was this going?
Katie Nolan
Yes, you're supposed to disclose things like that. You're supposed to say. Before we go further in this conversation, I was crowned MVP at the 2020. At the 2023 NBA Celebrity All Star Game in which the Miz hit a very controversial buzzer beater shot that they then said was. Do you remember this? I'm sure this was, like, an important athletic achievement in your life.
DK Metcalf
I think so, yeah.
Katie Nolan
He, like, hit it a shot, and then they said that it was too late. And so it was a. They.
DK Metcalf
They like, end of the game or at halftime?
Katie Nolan
I thought it was at the end of the game, but maybe it was at halftime.
DK Metcalf
I cannot remember.
Katie Nolan
Me neither. Somebody will Google it. You did win. You did win. And because I don't usually give the MVP to the losing team, that'd be pretty wild.
DK Metcalf
Didn't Jerry west win it one year?
Katie Nolan
Maybe that one exception that therefore proves the rule. Basketball. You. You good at it?
DK Metcalf
I mean, I just like playing basketball. Just to stay in shape. I just like playing basketball. Yeah.
Katie Nolan
You don't ever. Do you ever worry that you're, like, gonna hurt yourself playing basketball and then everyone's gonna be mad at you?
DK Metcalf
No, because I don't think I'm ever gonna get hurt playing basketball.
Katie Nolan
Now look. Now look. Somebody knock on some. If that were the clip that they're like. Remember when DK Metcalf said he'd never get hurt playing basketball?
DK Metcalf
I don't play basketball to get hurt. I play it, you know, just to run up and down the court.
Katie Nolan
And so you're under the impression that somebody out there is playing basketball with the intention to get hurt?
DK Metcalf
Yeah. I mean, some people do recklessly, you know, run into you while you playing basketball because they don't know how to play defense. So I just stay out of the way and just shoot. Shoot. Three.
Katie Nolan
That's me, right? Who? What? This weekend. Football. You're obviously going to watch it. Who do you think is going to win these two games?
DK Metcalf
Oh, no, I know it's gonna be a good game between both. Both teams, division rivals in the nfc. And Crazy Casey and Buffalo back at it again for another AFC title. It's hard to beat Patrick Mahomes, especially in Kansas City, but Josh Allen been playing lights out. Jalen Hurts, AJ Brown, Saquon, they all been doing good this year for the Eagles, Saquon played damn good this year. Jaden Daniels, great quarterback. Terry McLaren, Dami Brown, Bobby Wag. Like that whole defense is good. So I. I have no idea. I did not see the AFC NFC matchup looking like this, but I think it's going to be fun to watch.
Katie Nolan
They both sound like, at least on paper, two amazing games, so.
DK Metcalf
Exactly.
Katie Nolan
It should be very fun.
DK Metcalf
Four, well, deserving Teams made it, you know, this far, you know, in the season, so I think it's gonna be two good games.
Katie Nolan
What does it look like when you watch football? Are you, like, on a couch eating garbage like us, or are you, like, working out and watching it?
DK Metcalf
In the past, I've usually been mad that I wasn't planned playing basketball or trying to do something busy to try to keep my mind off of it, but I think this year is. Is a good time for me to watch. Watch football because I know, like, a lot of people across the board on all four teams, so I think it's going to be fun to watch. And, yes, I'm usually stuffing my face with either wings and candy and pizza and strawberry lemonade water every now and again. But, yeah, I'm usually a couch potato watching football around these times.
Katie Nolan
What's the. I'm trying to think of what the protocol is. When you have the numbers of the people who are on the winning and losing team of a game. Do you text them to say, like, good game afterwards? Or you, like, leave those poor people alone. They just lost. They don't want to hear from me at all.
DK Metcalf
Yeah. Because I won't want nobody to text me, good game after I lost.
Katie Nolan
No, not even like. Like, hey, love you. Don't beat yourself up. That wasn't your fault. You don't want to hear any of that.
DK Metcalf
No, I wouldn't want to hear it. And I'm definitely not about to do it to anybody.
Katie Nolan
Huh?
DK Metcalf
I did. Only person I did, too was AJ when they lost the Super Bowl, I was like, bro, you played your ass off. Well, deserved to even make it that far. So don't hold your head down. You. You made it to the Super Bowl. Like, a lot of people don't even make it to the playoffs. So, you know, some encouraging words along those lines after the last game, but right now, no, nobody wants to hear that.
Katie Nolan
Nothing. Did he respond when you said that?
DK Metcalf
Yeah, he said, appreciate it, bro.
Katie Nolan
Oh, like a month later or right away?
DK Metcalf
I think it was right away. That's good. I would. I would. I would completely understand.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, right. I wouldn't. I think I'd just turn my phone off for a week. Oh, here's a question I have for you. Your dad is in the call. Just got into the right. College football hall of Fame.
DK Metcalf
Yes, ma'am.
Katie Nolan
Is your uncle. Is that your. Is your uncle also, or is that not. I've seen disputed sources.
DK Metcalf
It's my cousin.
Katie Nolan
Okay.
DK Metcalf
Yeah, it's my cousin. Eric and Terry mc. Yes, those Are my cousins.
Katie Nolan
Are your cousins okay? That's amazing. So did you. Are you. Have you, you know, talked to your dad about the College Football hall of Fame thing? Is that cool? Is that very exciting for him?
DK Metcalf
So I was with him when he got the announcement. We were here. It was me, him and my mom sitting in Chipotle. And he was like, you got ESPN2 on your phone? I said, yeah, I can pull it up. Because, you know, I got Hulu plus live tv.
Katie Nolan
Of course. Yeah, of course.
DK Metcalf
Yeah. So I pulled up on Hulu, and we were watching it, and they showed, like, the clips of Michael Vig, Monty Ball, Michael Strahan, Nick Saban, Urban Meyer. And I thought that was it. And then they were like, oh, here's the complete list of the people who made it. And they went in alphabetical order. So, you know, they had the ABCs first. And then they showed the end page. And I said, oh, damn.
Chris
There you go.
Katie Nolan
There you go.
DK Metcalf
You made it. You made it. You like, where? And then I pointed to his name. He was like, let's go. And he did a big fist pumps. And I was like, man, congratulations. Well, deserving, but, yes, man, he made it. Along with, you know, another one of my good friends, good mentors, and Michael Strahan as well. So congratulations to my pops and Michael Strahan on making it to the College Football hall of Fame.
Katie Nolan
That is so sweet now. That is so sweet that you found out over a burrito bowl at Chipotle.
DK Metcalf
Right, right.
Katie Nolan
He was eating a bowl, a veggie bowl, scooping rice. Candy. Look, everybody says you love candy. It's like a known thing that you love candy. But didn't you also have to say, like, hey, kids, don't eat candy and think you're going to make it to the league. So I don't want to put you in a position where you're being a bad role model, but, like, what's our. With that being said? That, like, candy's not going to make you the football player, children, that DK Metcalf is. What candy are you? What's your candy right now? What's the big candy kick you're on right now?
DK Metcalf
I'm into the Trolley Llamas. There's like, a teal and black pack only you can get at certain gas stations.
Katie Nolan
Oh, wow. Selective.
DK Metcalf
You can try the Trolley All Stars. It's a green and black pack. The Jolly Rancher Gummies are good. Sour Patch Kids. Trolley Gummy Worms. I got addicted to the hot shoes during.
Katie Nolan
Oh, my God.
DK Metcalf
What flavor they know they have a tropical pack.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, that's a good pack.
DK Metcalf
And I mix the mango and the green apple. Mango, grape, or I usually pop two in at a time.
Katie Nolan
Make a little fruit salad.
DK Metcalf
Exactly. Yeah. Literally. Yeah. They good. So, yeah, I mean, I can talk about candy all day.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. I mean, has anybody cashed in on this yet? Are you? Why. Why isn't there, like, a DK Candy out?
DK Metcalf
You know, my. My guy Derek, he on the call right now working on. Oh, yeah.
Katie Nolan
All right.
DK Metcalf
Cool down the pipeline. Yes, ma'am.
Katie Nolan
What else have I seen you in? Obviously, Hulu. I feel like you got something going on with Lulu as well.
DK Metcalf
Yeah, I'm in my Lulu gear right now.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, you're everywhere. You're everywhere. But it's not all just endorsements. I feel like you do a lot of charity stuff, too. What was the Prison Fellowship? I saw that you do a lot with the Prison Fellowship. Tell me about that and why that matters to you.
DK Metcalf
So I've been doing Prison Fellowship since my rookie year, but this year I was able to do Prison Fellowship for my calls, my cleats, Prison Fellowship, and an organization called sound, which is a local in Seattle, mainly dealing with their death and hard of hearing department. Because when I started learning asl, you know, I just wanted to connect more with Seattle and bring more, you know, attention to the deaf space. So this year, I was able to partner with AWS Web Services, and, you know, we made, like, a custom AI generated cleat to where on one was Prison Fellowship and one was the organization SOUND for Seattle. But I just got connected with Prison Fellowship because a lot of prisoners who are, you know, incarcerated or in prison, locked up behind bars, they don't get a second chance at life and are, you know, nine times out of ten, forgotten, forgotten about. So just making them, you know, feel like they're still, you know, a person in this world and, you know, just giving them a second chance at life with, you know, the word of God or by sending them Bibles, devotional books, or, you know, just hopping on a zoom call and just talking to them about life and, you know, about everything. So just making them feel like they're, you know, still a person in this world instead of forgotten. So those are. Why partner with both of those organizations.
Katie Nolan
That's really great, dk. Good job, dk. You're really making a difference in the world.
Chris
I try.
DK Metcalf
I try.
Katie Nolan
I'm just so proud of you. You know, Massachusetts would be really happy to have you. Just for the record, apropos of nothing, Massachusetts would be so happy to have.
DK Metcalf
Let'S be on their payroll because you. You pushing them.
Katie Nolan
Guy like you. Look, I just. I would really love if you were on my team. That'd be just so cool for me. Sorry. Sorry for having an interest. Sorry for liking you as a football player. My bad.
DK Metcalf
You still talk to Amy? Ms. Amy?
Katie Nolan
No. I mean, I. I think I would, but I haven't. Like, we don't. I don't text with her or anything. Do you still talk with Ms. Amy?
DK Metcalf
No. I mean, I'm off social media, so. No, I can't. I can't.
Katie Nolan
Ms. Amy, are you off social media 100% all year round or just during the season?
DK Metcalf
No. 100%.
Katie Nolan
How did you do that?
DK Metcalf
Just decided one day I'm gonna just delete it.
Katie Nolan
That's the difference between athletes and me. I've always known that. It's willpower. It's that you just say you're gonna do something and you do it. What's that? Like, you never scroll. You're never on the couch scrolling. What are you doing with your hands?
DK Metcalf
Download games on my phone. So I play games on my phone or watch movies or read books.
Katie Nolan
Reading all those books kind of to page 30 and then putting them down. What's this? A random. Just, like, I like picking a football player's brain, especially a really good one. What's, like, the stat to you that you like when people use that when they talk about you? Like, what's the number that you're like, yeah, that's the one I'm proud of. Like, I know for a lot of baseball players, like, it's about rbi. I want to know how many runs I drove in. Like, what's the. That number for you?
DK Metcalf
I've only missed three games in my whole career.
Katie Nolan
Wow. Consistency.
DK Metcalf
Always on the field, always available. So that's what I. I try to hold my hat on.
Katie Nolan
They say the best ability is availability, but I think it's adorability. That's just. That's just me.
DK Metcalf
Almost ended the call.
Katie Nolan
If you just left, I be, A, so mad. But B, I would have laughed so hard. I would have laughed about that for, like, two weeks if you just absolutely left me hanging. So we're a podcast for casual fans. It's for people that, like, are interested in football or, like, interested in basketball, but they don't feel like anybody's, like, making it interesting for them. So there may be some people listening to this podcast who basically, like, need to be sold on, like, what about football is the best And I feel like if I had to make a playlist of clips of football to sell people on, like the moments of, like, whoa, this is why you should love football. Check this out. It's so cool. I think the Buddha Baker play with you, a clip of that would make it to my highlight reel. So it's 2020. It was a Sunday night game, Seahawks, Cardinals. There was a pass not intended for you, but Buddha Baker intercepted a pass. You were like in the back of the end zone and you ran 100 something yards, chased him down and tackled him at the eight yard line. And they did not score on that drive. It was an insane play. You ran so fast, it's like made it to lists of fastest someone's run in a football game, in an NFL game. In that moment, what is going through your mind?
DK Metcalf
Oh, shoot. Intercepted. Oh, shoot. He got a clear lane. All right, go get him. That's as fast as my mind went. Like, oh, shoot. Go. Oh. Not about. All right, go get it. Go get the ball. So that's just what went through my mind and that's. That's all that went through my mouth. I gotta go get him.
Katie Nolan
Have you talked, like, do you talk to him? Have you talked to him since that, like, have you guys talked about it?
DK Metcalf
He's actually from Washington, so.
Katie Nolan
Oh, yeah.
DK Metcalf
Facility that I used to train at. So, yeah, I've always talked to Buddha, even during the football games. We always give each other our kudos and respect. He's a player that I genuinely respect at a high level because of how he plays the game of football. But yeah, we always talk and keep in touch and, you know, there's always, always love between us.
Katie Nolan
He seemed very cool about it afterwards. He seemed like when asked about it, he was like, yeah, it was. I've seen the memes. It was a great play. So that's always fun to know that he's not just like, how dare you?
DK Metcalf
How dare you shout out defense? Because they did not score on that drive.
Katie Nolan
Amazing.
DK Metcalf
Yeah. When they got got the pick, our defense held them. I think they were at the 5 and didn't let them score.
Katie Nolan
So shout out. Absolutely. Shout out to your defense. If you had to sell a person on football, the idea of football, is there like a play you remember that you were like, this is what it's about. Like, this was me going nuts for something crazy that happened that I saw.
DK Metcalf
You talking about in a football game.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. Just like, yeah. If you're like, watch. If you. Even if you don't know football, you can Watch this clip and go like, wow, that's electric. That's crazy.
DK Metcalf
They just need to watch the Ravens or.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, that game. That game. That Ravens game.
DK Metcalf
No, like, the Ravens are a fun team to watch. The Eagles a fun team to watch. The Rams just schematically. The Packers. Schematically, Schematically.
Katie Nolan
You're losing them. You're losing them. They need excitement. They need, like, wow, that went that way and then that way and then it was crazy.
DK Metcalf
So, yeah, watch the games this weekend. Like, they are 2:15 too exciting team. Watch Patrick Mahomes. Watch Travis Kelsey. I mean, everybody's watching Travis Kelsey and.
Katie Nolan
Patrick Mahomes, so I think you captured them. Okay. I don't want to let you go because I feel like this was me getting to hang out with you again. And I can tell. I don't think I'm getting another time. So I'm like, desperately holding on to this interview, but I think I've asked you literally everything I possibly could. DK Metcalf, you are the best. We love you. People could catch us on the Great American Baking show big game special that's on February 3rd on Roku. And so watch that and. And watch DK on the Seattle Seahawks or maybe, maybe someday the New England Patriots.
DK Metcalf
Seattle.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. Seattle. Thank you for being here. You're the best.
DK Metcalf
Thank you, thank you. Hope you've been well and always. Good talking to you.

Katie Nolan
All right, last quick thing, we figured because the Oscar nominations came out this morning and we have a. A movie buff on staff here. Chris, why don't you. Producer Chris, say hi first?
Chris
Hi, everyone.
Katie Nolan
How you doing? He's. It's an Australian accent. It's pretty exciting. Get excited. He would give people the spiel on your movie connection. What you love about movies and what's your whole. You've watched like a million movies. That's what it is, right?
Chris
A million and counting so far? No, not quite that many. But I do love my movies. I've been watching movies, like, as a cinephile, right. For the purpose of like learning about the history of movies and things like that for a solid, you know, 20 years. Something like that. I love screenwriting. That's sort of what I went to school for and, and what I've been doing in my free time. Free time the last 15 years.
Katie Nolan
I play video games. It's a, That's a crazy way to spend your free time doing, like a. A job. But I guess video games are a job now too, so. Look at us both hustling.
Chris
Exactly. Exactly. And I've made just as much money from my screenwriting as you have from your video game plan, so I guess that's fine.
Katie Nolan
You don't know. You don't know. Maybe that's a good point. Maybe I've got a very.
Chris
I haven't made any more money than you.
Katie Nolan
Yes. Okay, great. Okay. So the Oscar nominations came out today. I totally glanced at them. The only thing that really stood out to me that I remember is that Amelia Perez, correct me if I'm wrong, got AS is tied for as many nominations as anyone's ever had as a film before.
Chris
Second most amount of nominations with 13, which is ridiculous, especially considering the fact that no one outside the Academy seems to like that movie. And it is, in fact, apparently pretty offensive towards the LGBTQ plus community. So did you see it?
Katie Nolan
I don't see any.
Chris
Nope. No, I don't think I will either. I think I'm gonna boycott this one.
Katie Nolan
I started to watch it. I'm not. Listen, I'm a. I don't. I'm not a big musical person. I know a lot of people say that. I know it's a hacky thing to say, and I don't even mean offense by it. I like what I do like of musical content, but I. It was already kind of climbing a hill for me. A musical I have to read doesn't really appeal to me, but I, I, I didn't think it's. I don't understand. I don't understand. And so I abstain. That's what I say about that film. But what else were the. What were other highlights to you? What stood out to you, Chris, about the noms today, announced by a friend of the show by an interesting connection. Sorry, go ahead.
Chris
I think the next biggest thing for me is the fact that Demi Moore got her first ever Oscar nomination. It's sort of crazy to feel like crazy. She's gone through her entire career without ever getting an Oscar nom. But she got nominated for the substance, which is an awesome movie. One of my favorite movies from last year. So it's good to see her sort of get some recognition for the first time in her career.
Katie Nolan
I've told you this before, but not in front of people. So I'll tell you again that I watch. I don't watch scary movies. I'm a baby. So I listened to a podcast shout out, too scary. Didn't watch. And they tell me the plot of the movie, and I just get to listen and go, like. And the substance sounded so nasty. It sounded like there were scenes that were so nasty that I wouldn't have been able to watch, but I mean, raves about her performances. And I've watched a clip of her performance. When she. Can I just say that scene. Scene in that movie that I didn't see, but watched the scene when she's trying to leave. To me, Moore is trying to leave the apartment or whatever, and she just keeps, like, nitpicking her fate. And then she, like, wipes her makeup off and starts again, and then she, like, does it again. Is so horrifyingly relatable that it's like. It's like I feel like how I would feel if I were watching a movie like the Shining and work while I worked at a hotel. It felt like I shouldn't be watching the Substance. It's gonna hit a little too hard for me. And so. But I'm glad that you liked it, and I'm very glad she got a nomination. Do you think she snubbed Kylie Jenner? Did you get in on that conversation at all?
Chris
No idea what you're talking about, man.
Katie Nolan
Okay, next movie. What else? What else did we learn? Ariana. Should she get. She get.
Chris
Ariana got nominated.
Katie Nolan
Great.
Chris
Yes. She's in. As is Cynthia Erivo.
Katie Nolan
Great.
Chris
Both of those got nominated for Wicked for best supporting.
Katie Nolan
To be clear, I didn't ask about Cynthia because I assumed, not because I. I ass. She was in.
Chris
Yep. So both. Both. Both of those girls nominated there. Unfortunately, Margaret Qualley. If we're going back to the substance, Margaret Qualley got snubbed, so she didn't get nominated. Another big snub. I think that the biggest snub that a lot of people are talking about is the fact that Challenges didn't get a nomination for best original score, the Trent Rezna Naticus Ross score, which was arguably the best score of the year. I think a lot of people had it as the number one score for the year and nothing, for whatever reason.
Katie Nolan
Wow. That would have been our sports representation. That would have been.
Chris
That's what I'M gonna say, normally you don't get a lot of sports movies. Representation at the end of the year.
Katie Nolan
Is Challenger's a sports. I mean, I guess it is. I really guess it. It just seems like a sex scene. There's some good tennis scenes to me. It is.
Chris
I feel like there's some good tennis scenes in there.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, that's. And that's most sex. The best sex movie of all time is Challengers. No, no.
Isabella
Like Mike with Bow wow. Okay.
Katie Nolan
Wow. This is generational. That's what this is. This is generational. Would you have nominated, like, Mike for an award? Isabella?
Isabella
Absolutely.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. And that's why. And that's why the Academy, especially for music. Wait, wait, Jesse Plemons was in like Mike?
Chris
Yeah. Wasn't he the kid? Wasn't he. Wasn't he in that? Let me have.
Katie Nolan
Let me ask you.
Isabella
The best friend.
Katie Nolan
I don't think I saw.
Chris
Yeah, he's like the bully kid.
Katie Nolan
What year did this come out?
Chris
2002.
Katie Nolan
I was busy.
Chris
Jesse Plemons plays Ox.
Katie Nolan
I was busy. Like the.
Chris
The nasty kid at the start that sort of bullies again.
Katie Nolan
You're describing a movie I don't think I've ever looked at with my eyes. And I've watched most sports. I don't think so.
DK Metcalf
Wow.
Katie Nolan
I remember it culturally, but I don't think so. Best sports movie.
Chris
Whenever I think of Jesse Plewens, I'm like, hey, that's the kid from, like, Mike.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. Oh, that's fun. That's. I'm sure he loves that. I'm sure he's. That's his favorite of the credits. All right, so everybody got nominated and everything's okay, right? Everything's brutalist. Brutalist. Even though nobody could finish it because it was too long. Did you see that story that the Academy was like? I don't know. I had other stuff to do and. Look, I know that's their job, but I. Unfortunately, I do get it. Three and a half hours for a movie. You couldn't catch me. I'd have to be dead to sit still that long.
Chris
Still got 10 nominations. I will attempt to watch it once it comes to streaming. If it does, before the. The Oscars come around. I'm not going to the cinemas to see that. I do not have the time.
Katie Nolan
No. To be around other people for that long, that's like if you're not on a flight, that's crazy.
Chris
It's tough. And one. One other snub that I just wanted to mention because this is my favorite movie that came out last year called Kneecap, which was shortlisted for best International feature Film. It's a movie out of Ireland about an Irish hip hop trio that rap in Gaelic. Which phenomenal movie, easily my favorite movie of last year. That got snubbed. That didn't make it. So I was pissed off about that. That was sort of the one that I was looking out for. So now my entire allegiance throughout the entire Oscar season is going to be for the substance. I hope the Substance wins as many awards as it can go.
Katie Nolan
The substance. A movie I'm scared to see.
Isabella
Respect the balance.
Katie Nolan
Isabella, who do you want to win Best Picture?
Isabella
Okay, wait, let me look at this as Best Picture. I think I'll do the substance.
Katie Nolan
Wow.
Isabella
I did like a complete unknown. I don't know if I'd want that as Best picture, but that was a really good movie.
Katie Nolan
The Dylan movie.
Isabella
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
Got nominated for best picture.
Isabella
I think Timothee Chalamet did a good job, honestly, of what you can do to mimic Bob Dylan's voice. I think he did a good job.
Katie Nolan
I don't know how I feel about making a movie about a guy who's still alive. Put him, make him. Why isn't he doing something about it? Imagine you're just alive, living your life, and then a movie about you comes out.
Isabella
I hear Bob Dylan, like, won a Nobel Peace Prize and didn't even, like, show up. So I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't really want to be a part of this.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, fair enough. I guess it's just like, what if we just waited? I guess Tamy Shilamy looked so much like him. They were like, we gotta strike while the iron's hot. Fair enough. Chris. And you said you're doing is the Substance nominated for Best Picture?
Chris
It is.
Katie Nolan
Okay. Yeah.
Chris
Which is sort of rare for a horror movie to be nominated for best picture, so it's. It's good. I feel like the horror community is getting. Getting represented well for that movie. And the. The director of that movie, Coralie Farja, got nominated for best director as well. In fact, I think all of the nominees for Best director, all five are first time nominees.
Katie Nolan
That's awesome. That's really awesome.
Chris
Really cool.
Katie Nolan
Shout out to that.
Isabella
How many women we got in that category?
Katie Nolan
Probably one.
Chris
One.
Katie Nolan
Yeah, that's. I'm sorry. It's a safe assumption. I'm sad about it being a safe assumption. It felt like a safe assumption. Okay. Last thing we want to do. As a. As a sports fan, one of the things I find the most overwhelming now is like trying to remember when what I want to watch is on and where I can watch it. It's. Everything's kind of everywhere right now and everything's always happening all at once. And time's been moving weird since COVID happened. So we wanted to let you know if you wanted to watch a little bit of sports this upcoming week. What could you catch if you wanted to? Chris, we've got a couple things lined up for the people. What's the first one?
Chris
Well, it's a conference championship weekend in the NFL. That's probably the biggest thing going on this weekend. So we've got the commanders and Eagles on Sunday at 3pm you can catch that game in Philly Fox.
Katie Nolan
That'll be intense.
Chris
Philly. Yep. And then straight after that you've got Bills at Chiefs.
Katie Nolan
Oh my goodness.
Chris
6:30Pm you can catch that on CBS. That's going to be the one that I think a lot of people are gonna tune into. You got the Taylor Swift effect.
Katie Nolan
Sure, sure, sure. But if I may tune into both. If I may tune into both.
Chris
Absolutely.
Katie Nolan
If you're gonna watch one, watch em both. We can photoshop a little Taylor Swift into a booth in Philadelphia. I think she. Isn't she from Pennsylvania? Shouldn't she technically be in Philadelphia? Why can't we get Sabrina Carpenter out to the Eagles game? What's going on there? Sabby, why don't you. That's definitely. No one's ever called anyone named Sabrina Sabi. I don't think that's a thing and I don't think it's gonna catch on. But Sabs, pick up your phone. I've been texting you. You know that. And let's go to the Eagles game. Let's get like a fun. A bunch of young women to like Eagles. Not like as a bird. You can like those as well, but the football team specifically. Okay, what else, Chris, what else can we watch for sports?
Chris
We've got the Australian Open finals this weekend.
Katie Nolan
You would, you would.
Isabella
I will be watching that as well.
Katie Nolan
And oh yeah, Isabella loves tennis. Sorry. Go ahead, Chris. I keep telling you to talk and then I talk. Go ahead.
Chris
That's all good. And in the women's final we got Sabanka, number one ranked or number one seeded Sabanka against number 19 seeded Madison Keys. The American Madison Keys.
Katie Nolan
Shout out Madison Keys. Madison Keys. Alicia. And then. Is there another Keys. I thought, I thought it would come to Keegan. Michael, those are. That's my key ranking. Because people that people wanted to know they were asking. They Were clamoring. Isabella, you're an. You're a. I was going to say you're an Australian tennis lady.
Isabella
Yeah, I'm an Australian person.
Katie Nolan
Who you rooting for?
Isabella
Okay.
Katie Nolan
Okay.
Isabella
My patriotism showing up one time. I'm going to go for Madison Keys.
Katie Nolan
Sick.
Isabella
But Sablinka is really good. Like, she's actually really fun to watch.
Katie Nolan
So you're just rooting for the.
Isabella
But I'm going to root for Keys. I do like. I do like. I do tend to root for the underdog. So.
Katie Nolan
Sick. This aligns with your interests, then.
Isabella
Yeah.
Katie Nolan
And your patriotism. You're always walking around draped in an American flag.
Isabella
So American.
Katie Nolan
Yeah. All right, so that's the Australian Open. And then give me, like, I don't know, one more. Two more.
Chris
Well, speaking of patriotism, the Celtics are playing against the Mavs over the weekend.
Katie Nolan
Oh, a rematch. A big rematch.
Chris
The rematch of last year's NBA Finals. This is the first time they've faced off against each other since then. You can catch that game at 5:30pm on ABC on Saturday. That's gonna be a fun matchup.
Katie Nolan
5:30. That's just like 5:30. It's like, not late, not early, just right there. 5:30.
Chris
Yeah. Probably not perfect timing for me personally.
Katie Nolan
So I'll let them know. Delay, I'd say I'll call them and let them know. That's a rematch of the final. It's also a rematch between me and my dear friend Andrea. She's a big Mavs fan, so we get really contentious. We don't. We just text each other mean things for, like, 30 minutes and then go back to telling each other how pretty we are. All right, so that's it. That's where you can catch some sports. Oh, also, I think it's Meet the Breeds this weekend, is it not? That's a local live event if you wanted to go pet some doggies. So that's this weekend. That's sports. Dogs are sports. I'm sick not racing them. Don't do that. But like, playing with them and giving them little kisses on their snoots. That's sport. Oh, speaking of which, it's Myrtle's birthday today, so happy birthday to Myrtle. That's my dog, if you didn't know. And also, happy birthday to my brother. I feel like I only have to say it because I said it to my dog. I really did want to say it to Myrtle, and I'm gonna say it to Kevin. But you can't say it on your show to your dog. And not your brother. Happy birthday to those two people that I love, one of them being a dog. Okay, guys, that's it. Episode of two Casuals in the books. Please follow us on our social media.
