Chris, you said somebody emailed in about a couple days ago when Isabella went to go see Shohei Ohtani when the Dodgers played the Mets, and she said he stinks because she didn't see him do anything. We got an email about that.

Yeah. So we got an email from Jacob. And Jacob said hearing Isabella bemoaning the fact that Shohei didn't do much of anything when she went to see him in person reminded me of this letter that my mom found while cleaning at her great aunt's house. And I wanted to share it. This letter is from my mother's grandmother or my great grandmother. It's dated July 21, 1920. I think she's going to school in Brooklyn for some reason or another. Martha Middaugh, one of the girls from school, and I went to the Polo Grounds to see the baseball game. The Yankees played Cleveland. New York scored one in the second and three in the third and Cleveland got nothing until the ninth when they made three runs. Talk about excitement. The grounds are on 158th Street. It took me one and three quarter hours to get back. And before I had dinner and got home, it was after eight. The ball grounds are very wonderful. I imagine it can hold about 40,000 people. The paper said 25,000 attended today. Some little crowd. Babe Ruth didn't do a gold darn thing. I was peeved yesterday. He made a home run. And then he goes on to say, this is one of the reasons why baseball is wonderful. People have been bummed out about watching the best player in the world put up a stinker and then have to fight through a terrible commute to get home for over 100 years. What else could connect me like this to a family member who died in 1950? So thank you for that, emo. Jacob. Very, very funny. I love Goldan, by the way, as.

Don'T know, a hundred thousand? I don't know. I can't. How big is a stadium? How many? How many is that? Is that too big or too Small.

A little too big, I think. But here's my thing. I could never estimate numbers like that. And that's probably just because we've gotten stupider as technology has advanced. But the way that this great grandmother Sarah looked around and said, I think this could hold about 40,000. The paper said 25,000 were there, which, you know, attendance problem even then. You know, not filling the seats, even with Babe Ruth at a game.

Last episode, we shared our sports pain to try to make Isabella feel a little bit better, experiencing her. I just heard you tell the story of your personal experience with the Bruins Blackhawk series, and I wanted to share mine in response as a fellow Bruins fan. So I was in Las Vegas that weekend and was. Was on the Strip when the Bruins lost in that terrible fashion and had to take a red eye flight back across the country, stopping in Chicago.

[Katie Nolan]

Oh, my God.

[Brady]

After the Bruins had lost that Stanley Cup Final. And just my luck having it, when we got to Chicago, my whole group's flight was canceled, and we were struggling to even find ways back to Massachusetts, where I was living at the time. And as I'm just, like, pleading with the gate agent, like, please, just let me get home, I hear we are the champions. Start coming over the speakers in the airport, and literally the entire Chicago Blackhawks team got off in my terminal and everyone was celebrating and I was in.

[Katie Nolan]

The worst place in the world. That's about it.

[Brady]

I just wanted to share that.

Oh, God, if I ever hear that song, that song makes me vomit in the back of my throat. Isabella. When they score a goal, teams will play a song, and Chicago's is Chelsea Dagger. So in that moment when they scored those goals in 17 seconds. You hear that song back to back. It has drilled it into my head as like, it's. When I hear it, it brings that pain bubbles right up to the surface and it upsets me. Kevin, that sounds awful. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

At least you were like in the comfort of your own home, dealing with your pain, not having to get home from Vegas, stopping in Chicago, the home of the people who just tore your hockey heart out. Yikes.

This was my logic to not go see the commanders in the NFC championship game this year.

We were with you for this, so you don't have to explain this to us. We helped you decide if you should go or not. And you were really gonna do it.

I was gonna do it. And then to have to leave that stadium in my own sorrow, but also being surrounded by 75,000 Philadelphians who were having a good time, not something I wanted to experience. I don't know if I want to experience 75,000 Philadelphians anytime, but, like, you.

My buddy, about three hours in the.

And I will never forget that.

They're playing. What do you mean? They're all singing and playing. What do you mean no one's playing? It's halftime. Yeah, that super bowl was. Whatever. That was the New York Super Bowl. Correct. That was in New York.

It was in New York. The lady who doesn't remember anything remembered something, and I just wanted to be confirmed that it was correct. And it was. Yeah, that's tough. That's tough. Also smoking one cigarette, I don't know.

How long would it have taken him to find one in the cold before the game was over, there a bunch of people outside smoking cigs.

Yeah, he probably would have been able to find one, I think. I don't know what the prices are like in New York now. It would be impossible to get one because somebody would be like, I need you to give me $5 because these are incredibly expensive.

Really? The sharing culture with cigarettes has completely changed.

[Katie Nolan]

Has it? Well, it's, you know, ever since they made it. Like, you can't just buy a Lucy. I think the sharing culture is also just different. I mean, people probably still do it. If I were still smoking, I would do it because I don't like to. I don't like confrontation, but it is. They are very expensive and don't smoke kids. But if you do Can I bum one of those? Okay. And last night the Oilers beat the Panthers in overtime. Leon Dry Settle's overtime power play goal gave the Oilers a 43 win over the Panthers. Game one of the Stanley Cup Final. The goal was his third in overtime this year in the playoffs, tying the record for a single postseason he had six during the regular season. Game 2, Friday night in Edmonton at 8 o' clock Eastern on TNT. We as a podcast obviously all rooting for the Edmonton Oilers.

Remember Jeff Fisher would go 7 and 9 for a decade straight with the Tennessee Titans? You're like, this team's so boring. The worst thing is that and just not be excited. And you're not good, but you're also not like, horrifically bad. You don't even have like a goal to avoid. You don't. You can't even cheer for like these little victories, like a three game win streak in June. Like, make history. Be horrifically bad. Find these little characters on your team that even though they suck. You have a quirky second baseman who's 5 foot 2 and majored in rocket science or something. You have these little people scattered throughout baseball. You don't want to be boring, so if you're not, don't be boring. Be exciting. Suck horrifically. Chase down like the 1899 Richmond Spiders records and whatnot. Cleveland Spiders do that. That's much more fun than just being a boring okay team.

I think the third worst thing is to be a team that continues to lose by one run in different. In new fun and different ways every game. Like the Boston Red Sox, who actually walked it off yesterday, a day game with the world's shortest home run. It was like. It was so. It was nothing. 308ft. It was remarkable. It was like, yeah, okay, I guess we won. Technically, we won. But what a crazy thing to.

Left her in for like 140 pitches. We're in the seventh inning and they left her out there and she's grinding away like, got to be getting tired at that point. But they leave her in there up 3 1. Oklahoma's only run had come on a home run that game. Otherwise no one could touch her. They went bloop single, bloop single. And suddenly there's two runners on and two outs, and the woman who had hit the home run comes to the plate. And it's kind of that moment in sports where you know that stars are aligning this way. Like the one girl who's been able to touch her. This game is now coming up two runners on. They leave the pitcher in there because, I mean, it's not. You're not going to your clothes. You ride your horses at that point in softball and fastball up in the zone. She just launched it. Walk off tank shot to center field. And the College World Series softball interviews. I'm pretty sure the post gamers are the best post game interviews in sports.

But the catcher immediately, like, went down to the ground like someone had squirted her in the eyes with water right as she caught the ball. Everyone's like, what happened? Didn't see anything. They showed the replay. The pitcher, as she was striding, kicked up a piece of. A chunk of dirt, and the ball went right through the chunk of dirt, exploded the dirt and shot it straight into the catcher's eyes. Never seen anything like that. It was incredible. I assume it was like a wild pitch or like a pass.

No, it was a they. So it was just the catcher took the pitch, she led off third, came, you know, halfway down. Catcher just lobs it back to the pitcher. And as she's throwing it back to the pitcher, Michaela bolts for home.

So you have to touch all the bases. Even though it's like a. You know, you got it, you hit it, it's out. You have to touch every base. Everybody gathered at the plate to celebrate with her. And upon looking at the review it, you could see she doesn't touch the plate. And so they reviewed it, they went back and looked at the tape. For like, a very long time they spent watching this tape to see if she actually touched the plate, if it was going to count or not. And then after that, they said she didn't, but it's not reviewable. And so it stood, which was like, spent. Like, then what did we spend 15 minutes doing if it's not reviewable? But there are. They said maybe she didn't touch the Plate, but we aren't allowed to review it. And so it stands.

They have to see it in real time.

And I agree with JR on that. I would have been like, calls upheld. I'm sorry. Be way too embarrassed to go, hey, we can't look at that. Even though we were just looking at it.

So instead of like, you know, pitching to them, the catcher basically stands up and moves out of the strike zone and you throw four pitches that count as a walk. And then they go. But. But if the batter wants to, they can swing at it and rare every. You know, sometimes they'll make.

Is it to, like prevent the risk of them hitting like a home run or something?

[Katie Nolan]

Yes. Yes. Yeah.

Like, Barry potentially walked 232 times one year because the Giants were not good. And he was the greatest home run hitter of a generation. So he just got walked every game. They just wouldn't pitch to him.

I just got back from Emporia, Kansas, where they had the unbound gravel cycling race this weekend. Specifically, one of the races was the 50 mile race. And did you see that? Woman of the week Isabel King won the women's 50 mile race while seven months pregnant.

Pretty incredible stuff. She biked 50 miles on gravel in the heat in Kansas while seven months pregnant. And then she took first place Superhuman stuff from her and so many of the other athletes at this event. There was also the XL race, which is 359 miles, and some pretty insane performances there from athletes including Heather Jackson, who was first place female in that. So incredible stuff that I didn't want you to miss. And I thought it would be cool to show is King some love for her performance this weekend. Supermom already. So check her out on Instagram.
