Kate
Hey, guys. Welcome back to another episode of Kate and Ty. Break it down. And we are still here with Amber Boone. So let's just jump right back into it then. Your daughter, though. Yeah, she ended up kind of. You were such a helicopter mom, but then she ended up kind of following in some of your footsteps, right?
Amber Boone
Yeah. So she. She kind of found a loophole. So when she was 16, you kids will do that.
Kate
Yes, they do.
Amber Boone
So when she was wild and I'm telling you, like, 14, 15 were absolute hell. And she at 15 was just like, I want to go to Florida to live. And I was just like, absolutely not. And she, she basically gave me ultimatum. She's like, you're gonna let me go live in Florida. I'm gonna make it so unbearable that you're gonna want me to go live in Florida. And I was like, you got one more year of school. Whatever. So she actually went or two years of school, but at the time she ended up going to Florida and she completed her junior and senior year at the same time. So she graduated a year early. So she graduated when she was 16. So she graduated when she was 16. And then she was like, and this is when. And this is why I think kind of like accelerated the divorce between me and my ex husband because it was like she left. We moved from Lansing to Detroit. She left to Florida. My stepdaughter moved to Vegas to be with her mom. So I'm like, I lost my babies. I felt like my girls, right? And you know, I'm like, I got you. Damn.
Ty
All of a sudden, I'm not so happy no more.
Amber Boone
So, like, if all we got is us. No, but, yeah, so it just kind of, I think, accelerated things because I was just like, wow. Like, you know, our little family obviously is not as happy as we thought it was because everything is falling apart. The girls left. And so she graduated in Florida early 16 years old. And then she was like, well, I graduated. She was. When she went down to Florida. She got really in church. I told you, the whole family is really in church. She got baptized. She went on a mission trip to the Dominican Republic. She was like, gonna go on another mission trip to Peru or something. And then, you know, she had been talking to this boy from Michigan that they had went to high school together, and she's like, I'm gonna come back and, like, be with him and blah, blah. And I was like, oh, my gosh.
Kate
Young girl mindset. So, yeah.
Amber Boone
Yes. I'm like, you have this whole life. Go live the life. No, I'm just gonna come back and whatever. So she came back to Michigan and started hanging out with a boy. Being with a boy. And then. Yeah, got pregnant and had baby at 17. So I was, like, devastated. Like, she texted me while I was at work and told me, and I'm like, this got to be a joke. But she was serious. And I. I had a complete breakdown. Like, absolutely not.
Ty
Because you. You work your. Your whole first off being re. Triggered by PDS from your herd doings. You're like, no, don't do that. Bad things that happen. And then, dude, the. The one thing, you're just like, yeah.
Amber Boone
I was like, you could have literally done anything. That's the one thing, you know?
Ty
Yeah. And well, then. And then you're what. Then that made. That made your grandma at what age?
Amber Boone
32?
Ty
32.
Amber Boone
But so, like, her whole life, I brough board for Gateway Community Services and Child and Family Charities, which is like, Gateway Community Services Lansing is like, for runaway and homeless youth and transient youth. And sometimes there's a lot of teen parents that come through there who, you know, don't have housing or what have you. And Child and Family Charities, again, is for, like, you know, foster children and different youth in different situations. So as part of working with them and being on the board, I was at a lot of events that I would bring my daughter to and her friends, where we would see other young people who had chosen alternative lifestyles that were struggling or who had. Were parents or what have you. And they would listen to these people because I'm like, I know they tired of hearing me.
Kate
Yeah, right.
Ty
Listen to them.
Kate
Right, Right.
Amber Boone
I've been preaching their whole life, like, don't get pregnant. Don't get pregnant. So, yeah, I'm like, okay, but listen to them. Like, it's not just me. Everyone says this is hard and this is real.
Kate
Right. I'm not lying to you. Other people go through it.
Amber Boone
So I. So I really felt like I did all that I could and so, yeah, so she ended up pregnant. So I was devastated. I was just like, this is literally the worst thing. I felt so personally attacked.
Kate
Like, I did.
Amber Boone
And I shouldn't have felt like that, but I felt like you did this to me.
Ty
Yeah.
Amber Boone
Which. It was a very selfish thing to feel, I think. But it was real as I felt.
Ty
Yeah. But honestly, that's not. I mean, it's pretty common because a lot of. Especially a lot of young grandmas are find out their kids become teen parents. It does. They think that it reflects on them as parents. Like, oh, my God, now everyone's gonna think that I raised you, you little delinquent motherfucker. And now I think that's very common for when you first. Obviously, you get over pretty quick. The baby's born. You know what I mean? But that initial shock is like, oh, my God. Why would you do this to me? You know?
Amber Boone
But I didn't. I didn't let her see that reaction. Thank God it was a text. So I was able to quietly break down without.
Kate
Process it.
Amber Boone
Yeah. And process it. But then I was just like, okay, I'm gonna be. I'm gonna be supportive no matter what you decide to do. So we, of course, discuss options. And, you know, she kind of went back and forth with what she wanted to do, but she decided to have the baby. So I was like, okay, let's do this. We're gonna do all the things. We're gonna celebrate it, and it's gonna be fine, and we're gonna be good.
Ty
And at this point, she's living with you.
Amber Boone
No, at this point, she decided to go live with the boy, so.
Ty
Oh, she did?
Amber Boone
Yeah. Yes.
Ty
Don't ever move with the boy. Don't move in with the.
Amber Boone
No, don't ever move in with the boy. I thought I had my phone down, but. So then she went to go live with. And mind you, and people were like,
Kate
oh, my God, you just go let
Amber Boone
her live with a boy. She graduated. No, she was working like she was, and that's what she thought. When she texted me she was pregnant, she was like, I was so excited because I graduated. She was like, I might not have gotten pregnant at 14, but I graduated school. I, you know, I had a job. Like, I was doing my own. I was an adult. Like, she really.
Ty
The only thing making me a teenager is the age. Everything else is. I'm operating as a grown adult.
Amber Boone
I'm responsible. She's like, I'm doing all the things. I'm not like you. And I'm just Like, girl, you're so 17, right? I was just like, oh, my God. But then she had the baby and I was just, oh, my gosh. So, like, the love that you have for your babies when you first have them, you're just like, oh, my God. It's when you become a grandma, it's like that, but times a million. It's just like. It's crazy because you're like, how am I gonna love this little stranger? That didn't even come out of me.
Ty
Right? Right.
Amber Boone
But then you look at the little stranger and you're like, oh, my God. And then as a woman, when your daughter has a baby, like, she was literally an egg inside of me at one point. Like, I know it's crazy, but we're all connected.
Kate
I'm just like, oh, my gosh.
Amber Boone
So, yeah. So I was obsessed from, like, the second I saw her. And I was an overbearing grandma too. I was just like, I'm gonna spend the night. I'm gonna be here and I'm gonna help you guys clean them outside of the bath.
Kate
How I say I'm gonna be. I'm like, my kids are gonna hate me.
Ty
They're gonna hate us, but it's fine.
Amber Boone
My granddaughter's dad was like, if you don't take your ass. I was like, no, I'm gonna spend the night. And I. And I did. I would go back to Detroit and I'll call him, like, I just wanna come sleep with her. Like, just come take a nap with her, please. Right now.
Ty
Are you close with the baby daddy?
Amber Boone
So, yeah, him and I are cool. They're not together anymore, but we're cool now. But we. I mean, I've always viewed him as a son because, like, he did. He came in at a young age and.
Kate
And he's the dad of your grandbaby?
Amber Boone
He's the dad of my grandbaby.
Mom (Carvana Ad)
Yeah.
Amber Boone
Like, there's. There's definitely something there. So I'm like, I'll always look at him as a son. I'll always look out for him because he does. He takes. He's a great dad. Takes great care of her. So I'm always gonna look out. Yeah.
Ty
Yeah, that's great. So obviously you. You young ass grandma.
Pluto TV Announcer
She's.
Ty
But at this point, you are by yourself just doing your son, right?
Amber Boone
Well, yeah. For what was me. My two sons at that point. So. But then. So now she's pregnant and having a baby and all that. My son is now 15ish, starting to go through. I hate that age.
Kate
I The age don't scare us, man.
Ty
We're already freaking out.
Kate
Yeah, no, it's already getting the sound.
Amber Boone
I think it may be different for every family. My family, the age 14, 15 is like the. It's like terrible. Twos times a billion. Like, it's like the worst. So there we were in the middle of shit. Yeah, in the middle of hell, basically, with my son now. And now he's like, I want my dad. And mind you, they haven't had a relationship and I couldn't tell you how long. So I'm like, what? What do you mean? You don't even like him. Like, what are you doing? And he's just like, nah, I want my dad. But again, we had a lot of changes. I got divorced. We moved from Lansing to Detroit. He lost both of his sisters. And I'm processing all of this and I'm. I did a survey at work and it was just like, oh, you're high risk for emotional breakdown or for like a mental breakdown. He was like, duh,
Kate
right?
Ty
Hello.
Amber Boone
It was like, based on all, like, you meet literally every box. I'm like, yeah.
Kate
So.
Amber Boone
But at that time, I don't think that I had the emotional intelligence or the time to even think about. Oh, well, the kids probably also are at a high risk for a breakdown because they too are going through all of these changes.
Child
Right.
Amber Boone
I'm over here like, kids, it's going to be fun. We're going to be great. I'm just like, they're kids, they'll be fine. They're resilient. But no, like, they were going through their own shit. Both my sons, so, yeah, my older one was like, I want my dad. So this point, like I said, his dad did not have. And he was back in Michigan at this point, did not want or did not have any right or visitation rights. So I was just like, you realize if you go there, something happens, it's gonna fall back on me. Something is gonna happen because it's your dad.
Ty
Yeah.
Amber Boone
And I know this, right? He did not care. Eventually, I was just tired and I was like, go.
Kate
Okay.
Amber Boone
So he went.
Kate
Because kids think that the grass is going to be greener on the other side or something.
Ty
Well, I think you kind of, I mean, you kind of had that thing with. Because your dad lived in Florida and you just kind of had that. I mean, I think kids. And honestly, him being a boy, I, I, I think I can relate because when I turned 14 is when I really started, like, thinking about all the things I'm like, my dad like, you know, almost like you're trying to figure out who you are as a man, who are. You know what I mean?
Kate
So, you know, and like his daddy, yours was never really around.
Ty
Yeah. So it's almost like your own curiosity takes over. You just really need to know. Either am I gonna like this guy, or I'm gonna.
Mom (Carvana Ad)
You know.
Ty
You just gotta figure it out.
Amber Boone
When you're becoming a man and you're wondering, who do I look like or sound like, or did my dad do this? Or like, he was really coming into himself and wondering. He had been. Because, like, it's weird. My daughter looks like me, acts like me. Like she. Everyone calls her little Amber because she's like my twin. And he is like his dad. He looks like him, walks like him, talks like it's crazy. I don't know how it happened, but, like, he birthed or I birthed him, and a me, but. And also again, because he's Hispanic. So my daughter looks white, light hair, light eyes, light skin. He's black hair, brown eyes, dark skin. Like, you wouldn't even think they had the same parents. So he's been compared to his dad his whole life. But he's like, I'm coming into a man, and I have all these things happening, and I don't know how to raise a man. And then I'm just recently now with his stepdad, and he's looking. And again, that was like one of the things leading up to the divorce. It was just like, my son badly wanted, like, a male role model in his life. And he was just like, however, whoever I need someone, so.
Kate
So you let him go?
Amber Boone
So I let him go. So I took him, dropped him off. I was like, I know it's gonna be some shit, but, you know, I hope everything's hard.
Ty
As a mom, that's hard.
Amber Boone
It was so hard.
Ty
Cause you have to literally. I'm breaking my own heart to let you go.
Amber Boone
Exactly.
Ty
To let you do this.
Amber Boone
Exactly. It's crazy. Cause I wrote a. I wrote a memoir recently. It's not published yet, but I literally say that, like, I have to break my own heart to, like, give you this. And it's like people would always say what they would do, and it's. I would never. I would never. And I'm like, when you're in that situation, you feel backed against the wall, and you're just like, you know, it's not even about giving in. It's about allowing your child to learn something. And that's how I felt was like, I know the outcome is not going to be good. But I also realized that if you don't learn this lesson yourself, you're gonna learn another lesson that might be worse. So go learn. And he did the. So he ended up back with me. And. Yeah. And then it was. We just kind of like. We had a really hard couple of years with him being a teenager because we just. I didn't know how. I didn't know what to do with him. And also, my PTSD started to kick in. He looks like his dad. He talks like his dad. When he walks in the room, sometimes I get frightened because I think it's his dad. And I don't know how to explain it when he is starting to get, you know, aggressive. Not aggressive, but, you know, loud and just kind of like becoming a man.
Ty
Yes, yes.
Amber Boone
And when he does that, at this time, again, I'm still doing a lot of healing, and I'm at the. Like, I was just born is basically into my, like, healing stage. So I was. I'm like a literal infant.
Ty
I'm a baby.
Kate
Yeah.
Amber Boone
I'm a little infant learning about healing and myself and everything. But all I know is this makes me feel all types of bad things. And so I started not reacting to him as my son, but as his dad. So I would get upset with him, you know what I mean? Because I'm looking at my abusive ex, like, not my son. It was such a strange thing. And I feel bad now because I feel like my son felt that and he knew that. And we were still working through things now, but I was just like, you know, I had to learn to treat him like he is his own person and he is my son. And even though there may be traits that resemble his dad, like, he is not his dad. But at that time, it was really hard for me, and I. And I feel I wasn't healed enough to, like, understand that at the time. So it was just really difficult. We butted heads a lot, and he was trying to figure out how to be a man. And I felt like a failure because I'm like, I gave you two dads and they both didn't work out. I'm so sorry. Like,
Kate
damn, mom guilt.
Amber Boone
He just wanted a dad. And I'm like, I tried, baby.
Kate
I gotta do it right. Right.
Amber Boone
Most people get well, you got two, some get none. You're right.
Kate
She said, yeah.
Amber Boone
I was like, oh, I feel. Yeah, so. So it was hard. But then he. He graduated in early. A year early, too. Like, my kids are. Are smart and driven as hell. And tenacious and stubborn and all that. Like, yeah, they're very sound.
Ty
Very resilient.
Amber Boone
Very resilient. They have to be. They. You know, all the things that I went through, they went through basically in some way, shape or form, whether it's through because I was still healing and learning through my BS from when they. Before they were born or all the stuff that we went through. Even the things like, I know so much more now that I knew then. But all the stuff that I thought I protected them from as babies because they were babies, they don't know what's going on. They knew. They could feel it. They know when my body's upset. Yeah.
Ty
Yeah.
Amber Boone
So I'm like, they know all that. All the times that I was, you know, pregnant and getting abused and all that stuff. Like they were feeling it inside of me. So they carried that with them. They're gonna carry that with them until they go through their own healing journey. So I'm like. But I didn't realize that at the time. And now I just look at it like, damn. They've been through a lot too. They've been through a lot too. So, you know, as teenagers, they had their. Their moments and it's all teenagers do.
Ty
But now you're done. Now they're all. No, they're all grown. Yeah, that's it.
Amber Boone
My youngest. My youngest son just graduated high school and he's going to the Navy. And thankfully. Awesome guy was like, I'm a spare. You the most perfect child. I'm sorry. But that boy, like, he didn't do nothing. I was definitely.
Ty
Give her a break in this.
Kate
Do your older two say it all the time too?
Amber Boone
Yes.
Ty
They know.
Amber Boone
Y. They're like, oh, and I'm so much more lenient with him too. Oh, what you wouldn't have grow out. We never had to. Like, I do. I'm like, I used to be like, go to a party or something.
Kate
Go do something.
Amber Boone
Like, I gotta. He wouldn't do nothing. And they're like, what you're gonna. You're asking him to go? And I'm just like, yes. Like, I kid.
Ty
Shut up.
Amber Boone
Exactly. I'm just like. I learned right, right.
Kate
I learned exactly. Well, because they say too that each child you have actually has a different version of you. And I thought that was interesting. Yeah.
Ty
I believe it's your personality that you're supposed as a soul, you're supposed to learn from that self reflection or.
Kate
Well, it's because it's like, you know, we think about just like the first one we Raised Nova. You know, I did so much, like, mental health, growth, and all of the things, you know, when she was little and went through so much and learned so much about myself that, yeah, Veda ended up with a different mom and a different experience. And then Raya did, too. Like, it's crazy.
Amber Boone
They all get a different version of you. That's how my kids, my older two got pretty similar versions to me, which was not my best self. My younger son got a much better version. And now the grandbabies, like, oh, my God, they get the best version of me. I was gonna say.
Kate
Right?
Amber Boone
The best version. The best version. Yeah.
Ty
But I think it's important, though, because you're not making excuses for yourself. You're holding yourself accountable, which is something your mom didn't do.
Mom (Carvana Ad)
Right?
Amber Boone
Yeah.
Ty
You know what I'm saying? Like, you're saying, hey, it wasn't the best version of myself. I try my best, but your kids made it. They're resilient. They made it.
Amber Boone
Okay, So I wanted to talk to
Kate
all the parents out there. As, you know, as our kids get older, they go through many changes, like finding their voice, deciding on what they want to wear, how they want to wear it, and becoming more independent. And getting dressed is one of those daily moments that we have as parents with kiddos. That's why we're loving Magnetic Me. Magnetic Me uses magnetic closures instead of buttons or zippers, so it's really awesome for independent dressing. Raya and Veda can really do it by themselves, and they get so excited because it's just magnets. They're not fussing with buttons or zippers. They just click the magnets and they're dressed. Raya's four, almost five, and she gets so excited that she can put the clothes on herself and do it. Like, I can literally see her glowing with just so much happiness because she did it all by herself. So not only is Magnetic Me really easy for kids to do on their own, they also have the coolest collections. They have a day wear line with fidget pockets and pika pockets, perfect for stashing all those little treasures that, you know, kids always insist on taking everywhere with them. Also, Magnetic Me has matching outfits for the whole entire family. We love that Magnetic Me has been a part of creating memories together. Trust me, once you try Magnetic Me, you'll never want to go back to buttons or zippers. I know you and your kiddo will love these outfits. Child
mom, can you tell me a story?
Mom (Carvana Ad)
Sure. Once upon a time, a mom needed a new car.
Child
Was she brave?
Mom (Carvana Ad)
She was tired mostly. But she went to Carvana.com and found a great car at a great price. No secret treasure map required.
Child
Did you have to fight a dragon?
Mom (Carvana Ad)
Nope. She bought it 100% online from her bed, actually.
Child
Was it scary?
Mom (Carvana Ad)
Honey, it was as unscary as car buying could be.
Child
Did the car have a sunroof?
Mom (Carvana Ad)
It did, actually.
Child
Okay, good story.
Mom (Carvana Ad)
Car buying you'll want to tell stories about. Buy your car today on Carvana. Delivery fees may apply.
Ty
I was going to ask you, though, did. Because. So when you were younger, teen pregnancy happened, and you said you were partying and stuff, did you ever find yourself becoming, like, an addict or thinking about addiction or, like, any kind of. Because I'm surprised none of that ever occurred.
Amber Boone
Yeah, me too. Because I was around very hard drugs from, like, I. I smoked weed for the first time when I was eight.
Ty
Me too.
Amber Boone
That same year, I smoked a blunt that was laced with coke, and I didn't know it.
Kate
Oh, my God.
Amber Boone
At eight?
Ty
Holy shit.
Amber Boone
I don't know how I lived.
Kate
Who gave you this blunt with cocaine?
Amber Boone
My classmate's dad sold it to my friend who was two grades older than us because I was.
Kate
What the.
Amber Boone
I lied. I wasn't eight. I was nine when I smoked that lace one. But my best friend was. So I was in, what, third grade? She was in sixth.
Kate
Oh, my gosh.
Amber Boone
And her. And we were hanging out with, like, seventh and eighth graders because they were her friends. I don't know how the hell. But I made a best friend across the hall was older, and she had older friends, so I was hanging out with, like, all these way older people. And so, yeah, so they used to buy stuff from my classmate. I remember him, his dad. And I remember we were sitting on the steps of the apartment building or whatever, and we had just smoked, and I was feeling all types of weird, but I remember him coming over there, and he was like, hey, that was some good, huh? He was like, you ain't let her smoke now, right? And she was like, nah, nah. Cause, you know, it matters from 12 to 9 or whatever, right?
Ty
Right.
Amber Boone
She was like, no, no, no. He was like, good. I put a little something in there for you. He's like. And she was like, what? And he was like, yeah. And he showed her. And I was like, what does that mean?
Child
Right?
Kate
What is it?
Amber Boone
Because I'm, like, bugging out I'm like,
Ty
what is that your little body? Oh, my God.
Amber Boone
But I didn't. You know, thank God. I didn't, like, take a blunt to the face or anything. It was just like, a couple heads, but still, like a little body. So I was around it a lot, but I don't know. And then even older. I was literally around so much stuff. But I just. I was always. I think my anxiety saved my life. I didn't even, like, taking Tylenol or anything. So, like, I never, like, taking pills. I never wanted to feel out of my element like that.
Kate
My anxiety saved me a lot, too. Yeah. I was so scared of not being in control of my body.
Amber Boone
Yes, me, too.
Kate
And it's still a fear of mine to the same.
Amber Boone
I mean, we tried some.
Ty
She's like, this is the worst I've ever done.
Amber Boone
No, never again.
Ty
Yeah. You're like, no, no.
Amber Boone
Yeah, I was the same way. I was just like, no, I don't.
Kate
It.
Amber Boone
Because. And also because I was around it so much. I seen how other people acted when they were under different. On different substances, and I was like, I don't act like that. And so I became the designated driver. Like, literally 13 years old. Everybody's tripping on shrooms and acid, and I'm driving. I have no license.
Ty
You're the drug mom.
Amber Boone
I. I'm just.
Kate
I would drive my friends around for hours while they're tripping.
Ty
The sober drug mom.
Child
Yes.
Kate
At 13.
Amber Boone
And I would just be, like, nursing my friends back to health while they're like, I'm sick. Do you want some water? And I'm like, oh, it's okay.
Kate
You're all right.
Child
Ye.
Amber Boone
And I'm like, this shit is so weird. There's nothing on the wall. Right, right, right.
Kate
Yeah.
Ty
That's crazy. I'm actually. But I thought it was interesting because it just sounds like a recipe for someone to fall into addiction.
Amber Boone
And it could have been. And that's why I'm just like. I don't know. Like, there's a lot of. I should have, honestly. And I did. I thought I was gonna be dead by 15. I just. I just knew it. I was like, I'm gonna be dead. Something's gonna happen. Or. I was on a path to destruction. I was in a lot of unsafe situations. I'm surprised. I wasn't even, like, you know, raped or anything. Like, I was just in a lot of very, very unsafe situations. And with a lot of older people doing crazy stuff that I think back now and then I think of my age And I'm like, oh, my.
Child
Like, they're.
Amber Boone
I was a baby, and as the age of people who were hanging out with me at that age, how could you not look at me and see a little baby? Because I was a baby.
Ty
I thought I was my. Some of the adults I was around that allowed me to do shirt. I'm like, what the. They did some weird.
Kate
Yes. When you see kids now at that stage, you're like.
Ty
And, well, what it does is it makes me think, like, wow, there are actually so many predatorial adults.
Amber Boone
Oh, yeah.
Ty
That people even think of.
Kate
Oh, yeah.
Ty
That you wouldn't even suspect. Like, these people are any adult who allows a child to just. No, it's just. Yeah, you have your own kids. You get older, you realize, like, nah, man, these people are. I'm lucky as. That I didn't get something happen to me.
Amber Boone
Yeah. I feel the same way. I'm so lucky. I'm like. I don't know how it didn't happen, and I don't know how I didn't fall into trying harder stuff or even being, like, snuck some harder stuff. Like, it's weird, though, because I think there. I. I don't know. I think certain people around me were a little protective of me because they knew how kind of, like, how much anxiety I had and also that I. I was trying to do right. I was just in all the wrong situations, like you. I was in all these honors classes, and I look at all the kids, and I'm like, oh, my God. They have, like, moms and dads, and they have, like, these perfect little families and everything, and I don't belong. So I felt, like, too bad to hang out with them. So I hung out with the kids that I felt like I fit in with, and then I would.
Ty
It's almost like your spirit was different. The environment didn't nurture the spirit you were trying to emulate.
Amber Boone
There was such a mismatch. And so what I love about my healing and my growth journey is that I'm finally the person I've always felt like on the inside. Like, my inside matches my outside. Whereas before, I felt like I had so much imposter syndrome, and I felt like I just. Nothing ever clicked. I felt like I didn't fit in with my family. I was like, I'm adopted. I used to swear I was adopted.
Kate
I was like, there's no way I belong to this.
Amber Boone
But I'm just like, everything always felt mismatched. And the more I heal and grow, the more I'm like, Ah. Like, I am who I am inside. I don't have to, I don't know, try to fit in or be anything else. And I'm not that I got it in me, don't get me wrong. But you know what I'm saying, I'm not that big back crazy person that I used to be or try to be to fit in. And so I think when I was in those situations, I think there are people who kind of knew, like, she ain't really about this life like that, you know, like, she.
Ty
Right.
Amber Boone
She's cool. Let her be.
Ty
Yeah.
Amber Boone
Because a lot of the times, like, I would watch them talk girls into doing stuff or drugs or this or that or the other, whatever, and they didn't. They didn't try as hard with me. Like, they didn't talk me into as much. And so I. I'm really thankful for that. Like, I can think. I can think of certain instances where I'm like, I'm so thankful. Like. Like they just respected that I was like, no, I'm cool. I never felt bad saying. I was always like, no. Like, I'm good.
Kate
Yeah. Which is so awesome because I feel like kids need to know that.
Amber Boone
Yeah.
Kate
No is a full sentence and it's okay to say no. And if anybody tries to force you to get away from that. No, they're messed up.
Amber Boone
Yeah.
Ty
And also you. It also shows that kids that you can still hang out with, you can still have the same friends and not do the same.
Amber Boone
Yeah, you can.
Mom (Carvana Ad)
You.
Kate
You can.
Amber Boone
Yeah, absolutely.
Ty
Hey, I don't drink. I'm.
Amber Boone
I don't.
Ty
But I can still hang out with my friends who drink. And, you know, I mean, we have
Kate
a friend that's Has. Has a lot of years of sobriety under her belt and she'll be. Still be around people at about you that. You know what I mean? Like. And she doesn't drink.
Ty
No, she doesn't. I think that's a. I think it's important to showcase, especially to people who may be super strict or maybe super religious. I can't hang out with people who drink.
Amber Boone
I can't say no.
Ty
No, you can't. It's all about internal. But I feel like when you're explaining, like, I'm finally able to, like, be who I really am in the inside. It's like the moment you reattach to your authenticity, it's like, holy. You get a beautiful thing. You get awakened. You're like, holy. And once you're awake, you cannot go back to sleep.
Amber Boone
Yeah.
Pluto TV Announcer
You know what?
Ty
I'm saying, like, once you. Once everything aligns like, holy. Like, the world is like, oh, it's almost like, damn, I wish I did this 20 years ago for sure, you know?
Amber Boone
Oh, my gosh. I definitely wish I would have, like, tapped in in my 20s because it 20s sucked. But, you know, I had a lot of lessons to learn, and I did. And I think that it. I love who I am now, and I don't love who I was before. Like, I was just. I was kind of ornery too. But I think, like, when you're just not comfortable in your own skin, you are kind of ornery, you're kind of a bitch, and you're kind of, like, mean to people.
Ty
You're not connected. Nothing's aligned. You're kind of misaligned. So of course you're going to externally do. That's why I think it's interesting how you said, oh, finally my outside matches my inside. And it's because once you align with your authenticity and connect back to it, the whole world becomes like,
Amber Boone
when I say my outside, I mean, like, my lifestyle.
Kate
Yeah.
Amber Boone
Like, how I am, who I am, like, the vibe I bring, like, everything. Whereas before or you know, people think I have, like, a resting bitch face. And I was always like, oh, you know, I just.
Kate
Because I.
Amber Boone
But it was my anxiety a lot of the time, and it was just like me not being comfortable in my own skin or in the situation or whatever. Now it's like, I don't have to be uncomfortable and I can be in situations where I'm like, this isn't really my thing. But also, again, going back to that, because, you know, I'm getting. I'm really my spiritual bag. But I'm just like, Jesus didn't choose apostles that were perfect. He chose people who could relate to the people.
Kate
Exactly.
Amber Boone
So you being in a room with people who are doing things that you might not align with, but you might be able to inspire them to do something that is more aligned with them. And they don't even realize.
Child
Right, right.
Amber Boone
Because they'll relate to you because you're there, you're kicking it. You're not like, I'm too good for you. I can't be here.
Ty
I actually think it's important because what it does is that I. Not only could I inspire this person, but if. You may never inspire them, but you being spiritually just there present creates a little bit of a. Of a foundation where you never know what would come from it. Someone could hear you say something. Oh, wow, you know, I really like how that girl. I like that vibe, you know? What do you do? Oh, well, I think it's important that you are steadfast in it. Like, I'm. I'm confident I can stand here in my spirituality. I know what the. I'm doing, and I think it's important because people can see that. And even if they. Even if, like, they don't agree with it or whatever, the, the, the aura still, the energy is still there. And I think it's important because people can get that idea of, like, well, my spirit says we can't. So I can't be with you. I can't hang out with the drug addicts. I can't hang out with the. Yeah, and what a weird way, because I'm. Right now he's up there looking down, going all wrong.
Kate
You're supposed to talk to them.
Ty
No, you don't kick them out. You don't judge them for their tattoos.
Amber Boone
You know, you don't do these certain things.
Ty
I mean, it's crazy how backwards they get it. But I feel like. Like, I think, well, that's when you get different. People hijack the religion to do their own.
Amber Boone
But that's a whole another story.
Ty
Spiritual inside. But I think it's interesting that, like, you know, that people can still hang out with other people and not have to. Like, you don't have to follow my path, but me just being here, my spiritual presence is enough sometimes to blossom, to throw out a seed to whatever, you know what I'm saying?
Amber Boone
It's important because I'm real big on. You got to surround yourself with people who are either, like, where you want to be or, like, you know, like something you can learn from someone you can learn from. If you surround yourself with people from your power that you can relate to from your past or that are on the same level as you, you're never going to grow. Yeah. And so I'm saying you need a mix of like, okay, this is where I'm at now, but this is where I'm trying to go and keeping people around who I can learn from and grow from. And it doesn't have to be like, oh, they have more money or they have this. It could just be like, oh, they think differently than me. Right. I love people around who think differently. Teach me something.
Ty
Yeah, they have a different spirit. They have a different.
Kate
So important.
Ty
And that's why I think it's important, too, because I think people get that twisted. They get it twisted. Or like, it's like, oh, you know, I. I want to be around people who have my beliefs and align with all my shit. And it's like, listen, I always tell Nova, your goal is to be the dumbest person in that room. Not because you're choosing to be dumb and ignorant. Because you.
Amber Boone
If.
Ty
If I'm the dumbest person in this room, I can learn from everyone around me. And I think it's a super important to go into situations where be curious because some people want to be in the group and beyond the smartest. I don't ever want to be the smartest.
Amber Boone
Yeah.
Kate
No.
Ty
What a waste of my time.
Amber Boone
Yes.
Ty
I would rather be with someone elevated higher rock and be like, damn, how'd you get up there?
Amber Boone
Yeah.
Ty
Like, you know what I'm saying? I think it's so. I always tell no one. Listen, your goals. You want to be around people who you know you can learn something from.
Amber Boone
Absolutely.
Pluto TV Announcer
Right.
Ty
It's important for your girl as a human being. But.
Amber Boone
Yeah.
Child
Mom, can you tell me a story?
Mom (Carvana Ad)
Sure. Once upon a time, a mom needed a new car.
Child
Was she brave?
Mom (Carvana Ad)
She was tired mostly. But she went to Carvana.com and found a great car at a great price. No secret treasure map required.
Child
Did you have to fight a dragon?
Mom (Carvana Ad)
Nope. She bought it 100% online from her bed, actually.
Child
Was it scary?
Mom (Carvana Ad)
Honey, it was as unscary as car buying could be.
Child
Did the car have a sunroof?
Mom (Carvana Ad)
It did, actually.
Child
Okay, good story.
Mom (Carvana Ad)
Car buying you'll want to tell stories about. Buy your car today on Carvana. Delivery fees may apply.
Amber Boone

So listen to and follow coffee combos now at Apple Podcast, Spotify Podcast 1, or wherever you get your podcast.
Ty
Yeah, it's crazy, but what. What are you doing now? So all. All the what. What's going on now?
Amber Boone
So right now, I'm doing a lot. Okay. So my daughter is 25. She has three kids. She did battle addiction for a year. She's in recovery, so I feel like it skipped a generation. It still came around to me, but in a different way.
Ty
Yeah.
Amber Boone
So after she had her first daughter, she Fel. Like a very bad postpartum depression. She tried to self medicate. That turned into a dependency, that turned into like a full out addiction. And in that addiction she lost her kid and then. Well, she ended up getting pregnant and have a second child. So she lost both of them.
Kate
Oh, wow.
Child
So.
Ty
Oh, in the middle of the addiction she had the second kid.
Amber Boone
Yes. Okay.
Ty
All right.
Amber Boone
Yep. So I adopted the second one. The first one, like I said, I'm cool with her dad.
Kate
So he.
Amber Boone
She went to her dad and we're still cool this day.
Ty
Like, oh, okay.
Amber Boone
I did get grandparents rights of her. So I like have rights, visitation rights of her. And then the second one I actually had to legally adopt. And then my daughter ended up entering recovery in March of 2023. So she's like a little over three years now and she had another baby. So I have three grandbabies. So that's a lot of my life is just like, who the grandbabies. And you know, also because she's in recovery now, I have transitioned her into her daughter's life. So we're like basically co parenting my grandbaby. Because that was always the goal. Like I never did it for me, of course for the baby. And the baby loves her mom, so. Yeah, so yeah, so we co parent. It's very weird. I'm like her baby daddy.
Kate
Is the baby back with her now?
Amber Boone
So she's. Because I legally adopted her. Like she's still like technically mine and lives with mine.
Child
Right.
Amber Boone
But she spends a lot of time with her.
Kate
Oh, but she still like lives with you and stuff?
Amber Boone
Yeah, so she has her a lot of the time. It's literally like co parenting. Like she'll get her like the summertime especially, like she'll go up there to go, go to camp for a week and then she'll come back down here and then she'll go back up there. But like, like the thing about it, we would love for her to be able to go back to her mom, but the legal stuff is just so crazy. You can't just unadopt a child. It's a whole thing. So how does that work?
Ty
So say if your daughter is sober, she comes back and says, hey, let me get the baby back. You can't just be like, yeah, you can have the baby back.
Amber Boone
No, there's at some point we may be able to pursue legal guardianship, but I would still legally be her mother because.
Kate
But, but to go back to the beginning when you had to adopt your grandchild, was it because the state was Coming in and was just gonna take the child.
Amber Boone
So, you know, you had. You adopted? No, the state came in, took the babies, and they went in foster. Well, my.
Kate
It's.
Amber Boone
It's a really messed up situation and the whole system is screwed.
Ty
It is, it is.
Amber Boone
And oh. But anyways, so my oldest granddaughter went to her dad. The. The younger one went into non relative foster care, even though they had been in contact with me. And I said, if you guys take her, bring her to me. They said, okay. They didn't. They took her to a non relative up. Because we.
Ty
We. Everyone knows that kinship is the closest, best thing for babies. All anyone removed, you automatically go to.
Kate
Well, especially Graham was like, hello. Yes, hello, hello.
Amber Boone
Yeah, let's put her in foster care. And it was during COVID And so I fought the foster system for 10 months to get her. Eight months.
Ty
And what do you mean by fighting?
Amber Boone
What did you like? Literally, I had to. I went to court. I went to the very first court date, and I was like, hey, y' all said Joe was going to place her in me. You didn't. Please, please bring my baby. And they were like, oh, well, we'll have to talk. We'll have to see about that. We'll get back with you. So. Okay, so that court date. Yeah, so that court date did not go well. I didn't leave with the baby. Nothing happened after that. So then I'm like calling everybody, like, hey, what the hell is going on? Y' all said Joe was gonna bring her to me. You didn't. And it's like, oh, you have to talk to this person. I'm calling somebody else. So then I'm getting like different people's emails and I'm emailing people. Then I'm talking to the attorney that was assigned to the child. I think it's attorney at lead them or whatever. Yeah. And so I was like talking to her, and nobody was helpful. Like, nobody knew anything. Nobody was helpful. And they're like, oh, well, we can't move placements because of COVID So they're not. Unless it's like a life or death situation or like a safety situation, we're not moving placements right now. So then after, like, the COVID restrictions lifted a little bit, and they were doing like outside visits and stuff, I was like, okay, Covid restrictions lifted. They're allowed to go do visits. And obviously they could catch something then. So now you can place with me. Oh, no, we can't. We have to do a background check on you. And now, remember earlier, I Told you that my daughter's dad had put his hands on her. When he put his hands on her. We went through volunteer. I. I was not even there when it happened. I volunteered to participate in a program through the state called Intensive Neglect Services or whatever, which is like parenting class and stuff. Yeah, I volunteered. I wasn't nothing to do with it.
Ty
Right.
Amber Boone
Nonetheless, it was a CPS mark on my file or whatever. Even though I was not accused, I wasn't there. I had nothing to do with it.
Kate
Yeah, you weren't the abuser.
Amber Boone
Wasn't the abuser nothing. It was that then I came to realize every time he punched my face in a parking lot at a gas station and the cops got called and the kids were in the car. That was a CPS mark that I wasn't even aware of. I didn't even know CPS was notified of these instances. So they're telling me, well, you have all these items. And I'm like, what? What? Mind you, I've. I was on the board for Child and Family Services Gateway. I was. I also volunteered for United Way and worked with mentored children. I. I volunteered at the church my entire life. The kids at schools my entire life. I've had my background run. I've had the central registry run.
Kate
Run.
Child
Right.
Amber Boone
My. In their entire lives, never, ever had an issue. Now all of a sudden, they bring up all this stuff and I'm like,
Kate
well, because it's a brand new baby. Some family's gonna love that brand new baby. Exactly.
Amber Boone
They already promised her adoption. They already promised the. The lady adoption.
Kate
Wow. So. Yeah. So I.
Amber Boone
So I was. So then I'm like, let me see my file. So they're showing me my files and I had to fight every item. And like. Or not. I was explaining every item. Right, right, Whatever. And then they're like, did you have
Ty
a lawyer during all this?
Amber Boone
No, I did it all myself. I did it all myself, so. Because all of it's so expensive.
Ty
I know, I know, but I know a family lawyer would jump up what the going on.
Amber Boone
It was all messed up.
Ty
The system is supposed to be designed for kinship first before adoption ever happens.
Kate
Families together. That's what it's supposed to be.
Mom (Carvana Ad)
The whole point.
Ty
It just blows my mind that they would.
Amber Boone
Yeah, no, it was a hot mess.
Kate
So.
Amber Boone
So then they were like, okay, let's do a home visit. Okay, fine, come do a home visit. They check my home. And they were like, well, you don't have a crib, but that's okay. Don't worry about it, we can get you a crib. I said, okay, great. Then they, then I get a text saying, hey, you were declined or whatever. Again, I don't remember exactly what said, but somebody declined. And I was like, you said, I
Kate
don't have a crib.
Amber Boone
I have a crib. Cause I think that was the reason because I don't have a crib. And I. So I sent a picture of the crib and I'm like, I have a crib. Like, this is getting ridiculous. Kept fighting, going back. Meanwhile, at this point, so there was. The visitations were set up so that my daughter could see the kids. And I began to realize like whoever brought my oldest granddaughter to the visitations could also see the youngest baby. So I started bringing the older grandbaby. Every time, every visit, I was bringing her. So now I'm, I'm like bonding with the baby and seeing her and all of the things. And also you can't use covet because she got all my dresses. You can't use that as an excuse. And also we're bonding so you can't say that. She doesn't know who I am.
Ty
Right, right.
Amber Boone
And so, so I'm, I'm there every week doing, doing this.
Ty
And how old is the baby by this point?
Amber Boone
A couple months old. Like literally, because she was taken when she was like two weeks old. Okay, so she was brand new. Yeah.
Kate
Still really little.
Amber Boone
Yeah. So I was there the whole time. She was a baby, whatever. Doing the visitations, meanwhile calling, emailing, fighting, doing all of the background checks, having them come check my home eventually. Now, because I was going to the visits, there was an instance where I happened to cross paths with the foster mom when she was dropping the baby for the visit. And she was like, at this point, she knew I was fighting to get the baby. She was like, I can't believe they're thinking about giving her to you with your CPS history. And I was like, you shouldn't even know about that.
Ty
You should not see. That is so fucked, bro.
Amber Boone
Come to find out, she was one of my really good friends, former mother in laws. And so I learned all the tea on her. Like she told me all her stuff and I was like, oh my gosh. Which, there's no way she should ever have any foster children ever. But, but yeah, so she, and then, but she told me, she was like. They told me that she didn't have any family and I would be able to adopt her because the system is so important when they placed her. So I was like, okay, so that's what it is. But I kept. I just literally when I say fighting, I mean, I was emailing, calling, showing up, going to court dates. I. On everybody's head. Like I was going to the boss of the boss of the boss of the boss of the boss will take,
Ty
give and literally have a system fight against kinship is so crazy. And that doesn't go to showcase how up the whole foster care adoption system in this country works. It is. It's insanity. It's crazy.
Amber Boone
So eventually they granted me placement of her and the foster mom appealed.
Ty
So isn't that insane? A foster mom you're not even related towards? Isn't that crazy?
Amber Boone
Yeah, the fact that she could. And so we had. The case had to go on in front of the foster care review board and thankfully they upheld the decision to move her placement. But it was like a gradual placement. So she. Okay, would come over for like a couple hours and then like a day and then the weekend. And then eventually she was placed permanently. Meanwhile, like, with the children being removed, my daughter's addiction, like, like, went straight to hell. Like, it was just like, that was so traumatic. And then every visit it was re. Triggering. So she got high to.
Ty
Yeah.
Amber Boone
She didn't want to feel what she felt like her. Because her baby, her oldest daughter would be screaming, mommy. It was very traumatic.
Ty
And so how old was the oldest one then?
Amber Boone
She was like two.
Ty
God damn it.
Amber Boone
So they were like. And that was. They were. Oh, so. So.
Ty
And two year olds. They don't know it.
Amber Boone
And she was very, like, like very much wanted her mom so bad. It was. It was hard to watch. But yeah. So my daughter's addiction kept getting worse. So she wasn't doing what she was supposed to do. As far as all the things. You got to do all these things and you only have. I think. And so basically they. The calculation is if a child has been in foster care for at least 15 of the last 18 months, they can terminate rights. When I tell you they terminated those rights immediately. Exactly. At 15 months. That was it. So once rights were terminated because my oldest granddaughter was with her dad, she got to stay there. That's great. The youngest one went up for adoption, so I had to apply to a doctor and go through. But oh my.
Ty
Wow.
Amber Boone
I already went through trying to get her in the first place. I went through the whole foster care licensing process. So at this point, I'm a licensed foster care worker and so I applied to a doctor, had to basically go through all of the licensing stuff again. But it's a Little bit more intensive, but it also was somewhat easier because I already went through the process.
Kate
So.
Amber Boone
Yeah. So then I had to apply to a doctor, go through everything all over again, and then finally was like, like, granted adoption. And I adopted her. But the goal was like, I'm in my mind. I'm like, it's my kid. I know there's no way. I'm like, she's. She loves being a mom, and she's a good mom when she's, like, in the right mind.
Ty
Yeah.
Amber Boone
So I'm like, she's somehow some way she's gonna come back around, and if she doesn't, I'll have a baby. It'll be fine. You know what I mean? But I just like, yeah. And her family.
Ty
I was like, yeah, her whole family. Yeah.
Amber Boone
Because I had kept. Made sure they had a bond the whole time. So I'm like, she's not just losing me or like, but she's losing her sister, her mom, her uncles, everybody. So I'm like, yeah, it's important for her to. And I kept fighting that. I'm just like, she has a whole family who loves her, who's been here since day one. And.
Kate
Yeah.
Amber Boone
So I ended up adopting her. And then.
Ty
And how old was she when you finally got.
Amber Boone
She was two.
Ty
Damn.
Kate
Wow. It's a long time.
Amber Boone
Wow. Yeah.
Ty
That's a long time.
Kate
Yep.
Amber Boone
She was, too.
Ty
And she was. Did she stay with the same foster mom the whole time?
Amber Boone
Yeah. So for, like, she was with her for, I think. I think, like, eight, nine, ten months. I forget. So she got put in foster care right. The beginning of March of 2020. And then I got her in December of 2020, and then I adopted her in February of 2022. So maybe. Yeah, no, she was.

Honey, it was as unscary as car buying could be.

Mom (Carvana Ad)
It did, actually.
Child
Okay, good story.
Mom (Carvana Ad)
Car buying. You'll want to tell stories about. Buy your car today on Carvana. Delivery fees may apply.
Ty
That's crazy. I think it's crazy that you have family that is willing to take a baby.
Kate
Well, and you said it even beforehand. If you take these kids away, I'm here.
Ty
Yeah.
Amber Boone
Because they called me questions, and I was just like, like, what's going on? We can't tell you anything. And I'm like, okay, well, if there's. I was like, if you need me, like, I'll come get her. I'll. Whatever needs to be done. Okay, yeah, we'll call you. They never called me. Next thing I know, my granddaughter's dad is calling me like, hey, I don't know what's going on with your daughter, but there's a court date tomorrow and something about the kids. And so no one knew I was coming to the court. That came with my mask on because, you know, it was like, at that time, one person every six feet. You know, only so many people a room. But they're like, who are you and
Kate
why are you here?
Amber Boone
I'm like, I'm the grandma. Y' all got my grandbaby. Like, I. I want my grandbaby. And, yeah, they were just. They seemed all annoyed as hell that I was there, but I was just like, who cares?
Kate
I'm gonna be there.
Amber Boone
Like, what do you mean? Y' all lied to me? And I did. I walked down, I see the foster care worker who had called me initially, and I was like, you lied to me. Like, I was so mad. Like, don't get crazy because they ever
Ty
give you an explanation of what happened.
Amber Boone
They didn't answer to me. I'm nobody. But, yeah, I was just like, thankfully, she did.
Kate
She ended up with you.
Amber Boone
I was like, yeah, I don't know who you're messing with. Like, I'm the most tenacious person on the planet. Like, I. And when.
Ty
Especially when injustice is happening right in front of me, this is injustice, period.
Amber Boone
Like, I am. I am the big. Like, I'm so against injustice. Like, it's been happening my entire life. Like, the system not putting children first, not advocating for the. What is best interest of the child, but just going through process, procedure, and dumb. That doesn't make any sense for a child's well being. I'm like, no, y' all did it to me. Y' all ain't doing to my grandbaby. Like, I'm gonna fight like hell for her. Yeah, for sure.
Kate
But how awesome is that, though, too, too. So now your daughter has been sober.
Amber Boone
So, yeah, so now she's over three years sober, and she has, you know, she gets to have a relationship with all three of her daughters. She's doing well. She works. She's had the same job for a few years now. She has her own place. She has a car. She's responsible. She pays her bills. She's healthy. She's happy. Y' all matter. You know what I'm saying? Like, yeah, she's. She's doing well and doing well in
Ty
spite of still dealing with that hard shame and guilt that's gonna probably. She might have to carry that for the rest of her life. But I think. Think it's important to. To note because I think, like you said earlier, once she lost her kids, she went down. And so it's almost like sometimes addicts will have, like, you know, that's the tipping point.
Amber Boone
Yeah.
Ty
Mode. Yeah, up mode is on.
Amber Boone
Everything's gone.
Ty
Everything's gone. Why am I fighting? Why am I trying to get better? And I think it's even harder. It's easier to do that than it is to, you know, do the right things and still hold on to the shame. And you can't go get high with it.
Amber Boone
You can't.
Ty
You can't escape from it. You just sit with it. I think that is a lot. Shows a lot more, like, just strength than it takes to just go.
Amber Boone
Because she has to be reminded every time, like, something comes up that she. I'm. I'm legally the mom. Like, it's weird. And, you know, the baby. There was, like, a whole thing about her calling me mom or grandma, like, she did. We had a infant mental health therapist that would come to the house and, like, work with her when she was a baby.
Ty
Did you like, that experience?
Amber Boone
Was that, like, it was more for me than her? She was a baby. Yeah. But I was like. I don't know. I felt so much guilt because, like, even though I was doing what I thought was best, I just felt like I was taking my daughter's place, and I didn't want to do that.
Ty
Right.
Amber Boone
And it was hard because it wasn't just the baby. Like, I was, like. I was trying to keep her best friend, like, informed. Like, I was like, yeah, I have to hold everything in place because she's gonna come back, and when she comes back, she's gonna need her kids and her best friend and her life back.
Ty
Right.
Pluto TV Announcer
Right.
Amber Boone
And. And I'll do whatever I can to hold everything together for her. So. So, you know, the mental infant mental health therapist would, like, have these little dolls and be like, okay, take this to mommy. And I'm like, so like, for a long time.
Ty
So she labeled it for you.
Amber Boone
But she. Because it was, like, this whole. That's what I'm saying. It was, like, a whole thing. It was a whole big thing, and it Was like, conversation. It was like, what does she call you? What is she gonna call you? And I was just like, I don't know. And then it was like, you know, we're at the grocery store. It's like, oh, you know, somebody randomly talking to her, like, oh, look at. Look at Mommy. Or like, you know, all these things. And I'm like. Then I'm like, oh, I'm grandma. Oh, my God, you're Grandma. And there's a whole. When I tell you my brain. That's why I go like this.
Kate
Cause, like, my brain literally hurts because
Amber Boone
was such a big thing everywhere I went, all the time. And then it just ended up being a thing where the. The lady was like, okay, so, you know, you are her. She a mother role for her. Like, you are her mom. Like, when she goes to swim class or whatever. Like, they're calling their other moms. Your mom sounds like, okay, so I'm mom, so she has to call me. So. It was so uncomfortable. But for the longest, like, I still didn't. I never said, like, come to mommy or anything. Like, I was just like. I just never gave myself a label for her because I didn't want to encourage that.
Ty
Right.
Amber Boone
But she did eventually end up calling me mom. And so. So, yeah, that hurt my daughter. And that was a. That was a thing.
Ty
And then now you and your daughter have this thing where now our dynamics gonna have to.
Kate
So now.
Amber Boone
Cause baby girl's six now. And so she calls me grandma sometimes. She calls me mom sometimes. She calls her mom mommy sometimes. She calls her by her name sometimes. And we keep redirecting her and telling her, like, I'm, like, a mommy figure, but I'm technically your grandma. Like, I'm just Grandma.
Ty
Yeah.
Amber Boone
And that's your mom. And she gets so confused.
Kate
She's like, no.
Amber Boone
She's like, we were in your belly. And I'm like, no, y' all were in her belly.
Kate
Right, Right.
Ty
Because she's sick. So I think. Yeah, the adults are kind of like, hey, kids are gonna think, you know, so you just. You just redirect them.
Amber Boone
Yeah.
Ty
Oh, yeah. Well, no, I. You know, I mean, I think it's smart. You're not, like, forcing it and making it this big thing. You're just kind of, like, letting the kid.
Kate
I think it's good. I think it's a good way you say it, too. Of like, yeah, I'm like a mommy figure, too.
Amber Boone
I raised you. I was like a mama to you.
Kate
But I'm your grandma.
Amber Boone
Yeah. So I'm Never. Like, I never want her to feel like I'm not letting her call me mommy. I feel like if she wants to, you can never gonna take that from her.
Kate
But.
Pluto TV Announcer
Right.
Kate
But I can see how that could hurt your daughter.
Ty
Oh, my God. You're a mom.
Kate
Could you imagine that would hurt any mom's feelings?
Amber Boone
Yeah, but she's done a good job working through it and accepting it and understanding. And she's done a really good job of just like, being accountable for her, owning her, and then also doing the healing and doing the work and having the hard conversations.
Kate
And it's gonna probably be. It's gonna be lifelong work, too.
Ross Store Announcer
Yes.
Amber Boone
And that's what she knows.
Kate
Healing on any level, whether it's addiction or mental health or whatever, or trauma. It's a lifelong thing.
Amber Boone
Yeah. So she's like. She's got.
Ty
I mean, it sounds like you're proud of her.
Amber Boone
I'm so proud of her.
Ty
Okay.
Amber Boone
Because I. I don't. I don't know anything about addiction. I was never. I don't know what that's like. So I'm like. And I wasn't. I don't know if it was like, again, a generational thing, but when I was growing up, it was like, crackhead. Yeah, yeah, yeah, right? You can't say that no more.
Kate
But, like, you should.
Amber Boone
They call him crackheads. And I'm like, okay, well, a substance abuse user crackhead.
Ty
I'm like, damn. I look back now, like, well, everyone was addict.
Pluto TV Announcer
Right?
Ty
Seriously, everyone I know is an addict too.
Amber Boone
And I'm like. I mean, growing up, like, I did know, but it was. It was a very. First of all, drugs were different back then, so the addiction, different back then, but. Yeah, but now it's different. And I have no idea what that's like. And I can't imagine. And I can't imagine living with the consequences of. Some you did under. Some you had, like. It was postpartum depression that fell into this. That fell into this. That just like spiraled into this horrible thing that she literally lost everything. She lost her kids. And it's. She became a person that she never knew was in her. And now she. And that's. I think a lot what she has to struggle with is like, I don't. I can't believe that was me. That doesn't feel like me. Like, I don't know how I did that.
Pluto TV Announcer
That.
Ty
Well, like I said, that's why. That's why she. She's in more of a. She has more strength doing it this way.
Kate
Right.
Ty
Because how much easier would it be to just go get high and.
Amber Boone
Oh, for sure, you.
Ty
But now you just sit there and deal with the.
Amber Boone
What she's doing. Thank God, looking at it.
Ty
And I hard, that's hard work.
Amber Boone
I watched her over, over three years, like have those moments where it's like, this is hard, this is hard. It would be so much easier to just go do this. But she didn't. Like, she spoke it and said it and owned it in that moment. Like, it would be so much easier to go do this now, but I'm gonna sit here and do the hard stuff instead. And time and time again, it hasn't been easy, but I'm just like, yeah, I'm so proud of her. I can't believe the complete transformation she's made. And I. But at the same time, like, I kind of always knew.
Ty
Yeah, right.
Amber Boone
Like I knew she was gonna come out because that's not my baby. I raised her, I know her. So I'm like, I know know she's meant for more. I know what she's capable of. All the things. And now she's like doing that. Like she started her own tick tock and like shares her testimony and talks to other people, you know, in person and online.
Kate
Really help people.
Amber Boone
Yeah, about. Like there is life after addiction. No matter how much crazy stuff you did or how deep you got into it or how much you lost, you can come back and.
Ty
Well, it sounds like she's taught you a lot about it.
Amber Boone
Oh yeah, for sure. I've learned so much. Even like just about I didn't even know the signs, you know what I mean? To look out for. So like even looking back, people are like, did you know? Did you know? And I'm like, no, my ass was clueless. Yeah, I really was. I'm like, I didn't know. There was an incident where. When right after she had the baby, she was staying with me and I was trying to help her and her child's father, like get on their feet and take care of the baby or whatever. And I was so damn naive. Anyway, so they came in the house and went downstairs. I woke up.
Ty
So they were both, both using.
Amber Boone
Yeah, he's the one who got her into the hard stuff. Like I said, she started self medicating. Like Xanax, Adderall, whatever.
Ty
Right.
Amber Boone
He's like, oh, here's this. It's basically this, but whatever. So anyway, I'm gonna skip a lot of stuff. But basically I went downstairs and they were like slumped and I'm like, so Confused because I see white powder on the table, and I'm like, oh, white powder is. And it makes you up. So whatever they slept. I didn't realize that the stuff that makes you slump can come in other form. Like, I was just so naive to a lot of things, but it was like. So I was so confused. And then it was. It ended up being a situation where I had to call the police on was like, this whole thing. But I was just like, I'm so confused because it was white powder on the table. Like, that rocked my mind for months until, like, I figured it out. Like, I think she ended up telling on herself or something. And I was just like, oh, my God, I had no idea. But it was just like, yeah, I learned so much about drugs. I learned about addiction. I learned about recovery. I learned about the. The battles like, that she went through, you know, within that, and even the things that she has to face during recovery that you just. You don't think about unless you have to. Unless you're in that position.
Ty
Right.
Amber Boone
And I think it's just made me a lot more sensitive to others in their situations and also just give more grace because you genuinely don't know what somebody's going through or you really don't, what they've overcome. So you should always be kind.
Ty
That's what I'm saying. I always say. I always tell my kids, like, you choose compassion first. Yeah, Always compassion first. You will never be wrong for choosing compassion first.
Amber Boone
And.
Ty
And you can choose compassion while being ignorant. It's okay to be ignorant. I don't know what this is.
Child
I don't.
Ty
But I can still have compassion for this. And until, you know, obviously, until they show you otherwise. But I think it's always important to go into stuff like that. And I think it sounds like your daughter taught you that, that that's important, because I think people, especially nowadays, like social media, it's just so, like, we're so quick to go right to criticism, right to. Right to just like, breaking people down and ridicule on them without even. Just be kind, without even asking, how did you get here? You know, it's such a simple question of, like, saying, hey, what have you gone through? How did you get here? The curious. And that's why I'm always saying curiosity is the pathway to compassion.
Amber Boone
Yeah.
Ty
If you stay rigid and don't. I don't give a fuck, you're wrong as fuck. You will never have compassion. It won't. You won't allow it. So you have to be curious about Things in order to like, oh, wow.
Amber Boone
Or life will humble you.
Ty
It will humble you quick.
Amber Boone
And that's what I try to tell people who try to get crazy in the comments online. I'm just like, listen, life will humble you. Tumbled the shit out of me. It's humbled because I. Because that's the thing. Like, I never thought. Because I was so strict, I was just like, my kids, right? See, Never could never be my kids. Like, if you talk to me when she was, you know, 12, 13, I'm NEP. My child would never.
Kate
They're.
Amber Boone
There's no way.
Ty
Right?
Amber Boone
Life was like that.
Ty
Yeah. Yeah, right, right.
Amber Boone
Because all the things. She had a baby.
Mom (Carvana Ad)
Yeah.
Ty
She's an addiction.
Amber Boone
And the people who knew me raising her then would have said the same because I appeared to have it all together and have my ducks in a row. And the kids was good and everything. They were. If I. At that point, I could say, like, my kids are just amazing. They were. They were on honor roll, they got good grades, they were doing sports.
Kate
They were doing great.
Amber Boone
You would never, never think that somehow that will lead to teen pregnancy or addiction or, like, anything. But, yeah, life will show. It's. Life is gonna. Life.
Ty
Well, especially with addiction. It has no filter. It can affect rich people, poor people, successful people. You know, it doesn't matter. I mean, it's a.
Amber Boone
And I believe that everyone's also like. It's funny. I did a video about this the other day where I was just like, it's crazy because my. So my dad was addicted to crack, like, my whole life. Life, which I had suspicions but wasn't 100 sure of until he died. But I was. And then I was like, all of the opportunities I had to be an addict, essentially. I don't know how it didn't happen to me. Why my baby? Like, why her and not me? Maybe because it could have been me, though.
Ty
There's always a reason. There's. I know things come around where it's like, maybe it was because. I mean, honestly. So what I think about is when you're explaining the situation between, like, you know, a date, adopting your grandchild, and then having to deal with that dynamic between you and your daughter. I mean, if anything, it's an opportunity for you and her to just build something that's unbreakable and just. Just keeps growing in strength and just. You know what I mean? Which I think nothing is better for children than just a nice set of matriarchal women around that are gonna.
Amber Boone
Especially girls.
Ty
Yeah.
Child
Yes.
Ross Store Announcer
Yes.
Ty
That's why it's important she has all three girls.
Amber Boone
I know. I'm like, girl, I feel that. Well, I got the all girls too, right?
Kate
All girls.
Ty
And listen, our. Our oldest is starting.
Kate
The sass is coming full. Oh, yeah, Full throttle.
Amber Boone
I feel like the grandbabies were born with sad. So I'm like, I don't know if it's the COVID or what, but.
Kate
But I saw. But I saw recently you moved into a beautiful place in Detroit. It looks gorgeous. So I want to know, like, so what's the next chapter for your life?
Pluto TV Announcer
So.
Amber Boone
So right now I am, like I said, just kind of co parenting with the grandbabies and, and helping all of my children, like, get safely on their feet and flee the nest, like, safely.
Ty
You're being a mama bear.
Amber Boone
I am still like. But I'm still like, they're all playing the nest, but I'm still checking on.
Mom (Carvana Ad)
Yeah.
Amber Boone
All right. And then, yeah, so I just moved downtown, which that's for me is like, I'm investing in my piece because that, that view, like, waking up to that even on the most stressful day, I'm like, like, and then just being able to get fresh air and be outside. So that. But like, I am an entrepreneur, so I am a real estate agent in Michigan. I also am a social media creator and consultant. So I have clients that I go in and consult and help them grow their social media. I also just wrote my memoir about my life. It's not published yet, but I'm working on getting it published. I'm very excited about that.
Kate
You know what it's going to be called or anything?
Amber Boone
It's called the Alchemy of stillness.
Kate
Okay.
Ty
Love it.
Amber Boone
And it's about. I mean, it tells the story of my life, but in a way that really focuses on how some of these transformational moments happened and how I spent my whole life running. Like, running towards better and running towards peace and literally just running, running, running. When ultimately I found rest, I found like just in resting, like, I found my transformation and the moments of stillness in between those. The running and in the moment moments where it feels like nothing's happening and I should be doing something and I should be going somewhere, but instead I'm learning and I'm processing and that's where the transformation really occurs, which is the alchemy of stillness. Stillness. So. So, yeah, so that's that. And then I also own a business, a permanent jewelry business called Adorned Bonds. So I'm running that. And so I have like, multiple hats, multiple businesses, but really, like in this season of my life, I'm just. I really focused on peace, like creating that for myself and for those around me. And I don't know, I. I feel like I'm 40. I just turned 40 and I just feel like, oh, this is just the beginning. Like this is the first time in my life I've ever been. I. I call myself like an empty ish nester because I still have the grandbaby. Yeah. But I'm co parenting so it's not. You know, but I'm like. I've always had kids. I've always. I've never just been able to wake up and do what I want to do. I've never really had my own space like that. Like I've never. So this is, this is different for me. But it's also. I feel like what I need in order to tap into because I feel like I want to create more, I want to write more, I want to do more amazing things and I need this peaceful curated space in order to do that.
Kate
Well, sounds.
Ty
So you're building. Yeah. You're building the environments.
Kate
I was gonna say it sounds like it's gonna be a beautiful season. Yeah. You know, of life. You know, it's so awesome.
Amber Boone
Yeah.
Kate
Which is so awesome.
Amber Boone
Yes.
Kate
Well. Okay.
Ty
Happy for you.
Amber Boone
Thank you. Excited.
Kate
So for people that don't know where to find you, where can they find you?
Amber Boone
So I am get real with AB on all platforms. Okay. Pretty much it.
Kate
Okay. And you're on like Tick Tock, Insta.
Amber Boone
Yep. Tick Tock, Instagram, Facebook. I think that's pretty much it. I don't do like Snapchat or nothing.
Kate
Me neither. I know I should, but I don't.
Amber Boone
I feel like I heard you can make a lot of money on there. Yeah.
Ty
But listen, there's a thing though. There's. There's a. There's a caveat where it's like you have to post so much. You ever see staff hat stories where the dot will be like. It's like the little. So you have to do a certain threshold before you.
Kate
And I hate it. Cuz I'm such a. Like live in the moment.
Ty
You know what I mean?
Kate
Or whatever.
Ty
To take videos and pictures.
Kate
I know. Cuz I live in the moment a lot. I don't know. I don't want to be like this. Living it through a. I don't know. It's hard. But thank you so much.
Amber Boone
Thank you guys for having me. It's been so good.
Kate
Yeah. For just coming on and sharing your story. And stuff. And you guys make sure to go check out her pages. We're always be excited to find out when the memoir is being published and stuff.
