Yes. And I gravitated towards you like at the first dinner and you were like, I love your eyebrows. And I was like, yes. First of all, I was in such an ugly eyebrow. Oh, I didn't care. And I was like, oh my God, thank you so much. But I, I told you at that time, my mom said that Stevie reminds me so much of me when I was that age. And I was like, oh my God, you remind me so much of my mom. That's so crazy.

I remember that because you're like, my mom loves Stevie's videos. And I. It always just makes like my heart. Mel. Dude, she's five.

She turned five in May.

Yeah. But unfortunately, like, there's a possibility, high possibility that, like, somebody just died and dropped off all this.

Yeah. I feel like my friends always say, like, I'm a cat. Like, I have nine lives, and I've had nine lives. I feel like I went to high school for carpentry. I feel like nobody knows what. Okay.

And it was a tech school, so like you go two weeks on in your trade, two weeks off. And it was random. Like I was just like, okay. I like to build things, like whatever. I wanted to be an interior designer.

That's why I'm like so staunch about my house. Love home design. And then I went to college and was like, okay, no, I like psychology. I like business. I like that kind of like corporate style living. Until I got into it. And I went to grad school for industrial organizational psychology. I don't know if you know what that is. It's. It's like a long word for like. I didn't feel like going to be a therapist. Got it. So I went to a business school undergrad for psychology. So you have to take take business courses. And I really liked the conjunction between the two. So it's kind of like human resources, but you have a background in psychology.

Interesting.

So you're like a consultant or you can be like a life coach. Like I'm a certified life coach. Who wants to listen to me? I don't me. I don't advise that. But yeah. So you can like go a bunch of different avenues. And I was working in hr. Covet happened. I was at the end of my grad school. I was like in my internship and I only had like two months left. First video I ever posted on Tick Tock. Do you know that sound that's like, oh my God, I'm so embarrassed to tell this. You know the sounds like, hey, how y' all doing?

I just like for my friends, I had zero. Like, literally not even one follower use that sound. And I was like walking through my bedroom door. Mind you, I have a grad school T shirt on. Like where I went to grad school. Just keep that in mind. The sound is when. Oh my God, mom, don't watch when your his roommates hear you getting your back blown out all night and you have to leave in the morning or something like that.

I knew you were my person.

Yeah. And I'm a different person now with

You know, and from there people were like, what Are you wearing. Oh, my God. And just kind of find your way.

It's always the ones that you put no effort into that you're just like, let me put my phone down. Because you're like, this is so funny. And then you're like, oh, I didn't want that many people to see. No. Yeah.

And then you spend, like, eight hours editing a video, like, to perfection, and it flops. And you're like, no, okay, my vlogs.

Like, I know my community loves my morning and my evening vlogs, but when I tell you it's 90 minutes of footage and it takes me because I don't use it in editing or anything. Oh, yeah. 90 minutes of footage. And then I'll edit it down to, like, two and a half minutes, which takes hours and hours, and they always perform the lowest. And then I'll, like, set up my phone for five minutes and shake my ass coochie.

Yeah. I feel like since I've met you, you've, like, just glowed, like, more and more. That's so nice. Not even in, like, a sappy, like, oh, hold my hand. Like, genuinely. Like, you can see. Like, your confidence is just, like, exuberant.

Or the people that are the most loved that they never get any hate. And I met them, and I'm like, they're so not nice. Like, they're not good people.

And also, my thing is, like, the way they treat other people.

I think, like, sometimes I'm just, like, in a daze from travel to where, like, I'm not really in the experience as much as I want to be or, like, should be, because it's, like, such an amazing opportunity. But I feel like there's some kind of, like, goodness in that, because it's like, okay, like, you don't come from this. Right. Like, you. This isn't normal to you, and, like, it shouldn't be. I don't ever really want that. So be normal to me. I don't want to get so comfortable and used to, like, these extravagant vacations that, like, that's the only time I can find happiness. Yeah. So, like, there was a trip. I think it was Coachella. I was away for, like, 11 or 12 days straight, and I just was like, oh, my God, I need a break. And the days are meshing together, and, like, this is anyone else's dream, and I'm just laying here like, I don't want to get out of bed. I don't want to do this.

Get up. You know, get up. Don't get used to it, but get up. Like, enjoy it so totally.

So I never really realized it was my job until I had to quit my actual job. I was doing lashes. I don't know if you know, I was a lash tech. Nine lives, babe. Nine lives.

Yeah, I was a lash tech. Like, all through grad school, even in undergrad, I was like, literally doing it on the couch of my, like, townhouse to my roommates. Okay. And I. That was the last job I quit. But I had a full time job in hr. Quit that, got a manager. Still was doing lashes. Made probably what I would make in like six months. In the first deal I signed with my manager, I was like, okay, bye, clients.

Yeah, it was kind of the same for me because I remember when I signed with my manager, I was still working full time as a nurse. And she was like, okay, we're gonna go through, like, your rates and like, what you should be making.

I was like, no. Did you ever charge anyone, like, before you got a manager, like, a really low amount?

[Avery Woods]

An embarrassing.

[Dana A. Rhodes]

Yeah, I think I like, I got. I took like a hundred. No, my tick tocks were having like a half a million views at the time. And I took a hundred dollars.

Oh, I took 100.

Whatever brand. That was like, literally.

I remember having like 1.2 million followers on tick tock. And I took $250 to make a whole video about, like, a face mask. Because it was like, when I was working as a nurse, and so people respected my opinion about medical and stuff. And I did like the mask, but. And then I. I signed a deal with. I won't say the company, but I remember doing all my negotiations, and it was like 52 back and forth emails before we got. Finally got to where I would, like, film the video. I had to show the product five times in one minute in an integrated vlog. And they paid.

[Dana A. Rhodes]

Oh, that brief was. Oh, that brief was long.

[Avery Woods]

They paid me $500, but I made $1800 a paycheck as a nurse.

[Dana A. Rhodes]

At that time, literally, 500 was like 900 a paycheck.

Like, 500 was two weeks of groceries for my family. I had kids.

I didn't give a. I was so grateful for that.

[Avery Woods]

And I was like, okay, for a video? Yeah, that's nothing.

[Dana A. Rhodes]

And I genuinely believe that, like, back when that was happening, like, it was so green. Like, to know what to do in that space was so, so, like, unknown even by the people in it. Like, I feel like even my manager was, like, not super quick to give me direction because it's such a new industry. It still is.

Yep.

But I feel like now it's like, okay, because I'm so busy and I'm getting pulled in so many different directions. Like, price goes up, babe. It has to.

Yeah. And also, you're very good at adjusting to, like, what your audience wants to see. And thank you. You people love following you because you're real. You have the most iconic style. You have the most beautiful, curvy body. And we don't have enough of that, guys in this industry. It's true.

But not until social media did I get into the fashion space. Like, I didn't even know what Jimmy Choo was before. Girl, I used to beg my mom for like 20 to get some Hollister jeans or something.

I don't know what any of these, like, big fashion houses are, so, like, it's a learning experience for sure. But I think I saw a need for, like, women my size maybe a little different to dress how other women who are like, the clothes are intended for are dressing. Because we can make it look good. Like, it does look great. I recently heard not to on a brand, but a certain activewear brand.

It gave me the worst fupa.

Like, just completely, completely accentuated all the areas of my postpartum body I felt so bad about. And it did not make me feel good. Yeah, it didn't make me feel good.

I hope they learned that's nasty and, like, way too many brands actually do feel that way without publicly saying it. And I'm like, no, no, speak your truth. Because even, like, good American, like, doubling back on their having plus sizes. Isn't that the whole point? Excuse my language. Like, wasn't that the whole point? You built your brand. You built your brand off the backs of people who look like me. And now you only want to cater to people who don't look like me. And it's like, it's just really disgusting. It really is. Like, if you think about it. Trust and believe. Sorry, I'm going to spill some. No, I'm in the works of, like, maybe having my own brand.

And it is a lot easier than you would think to. I believe that carry plus sizes carry bigger pieces. So I think there's really no excuse anymore, and that's how I feel. That's very sweet. Yeah, I. I always tell David, my husband, I'm like, I just want her to be confident who she is on her own terms for when we're not there to protect her. He is going to treat someone like the queen or king, whatever. He goes whichever way he goes the way that they deserve because he also, David, is such a good husband. So they have a really great role model. But he would never hurt a fly. Like I've told this story before. Like he cried on his way to school once because he didn't want to step on the grass to get in the car because it's alive, you know, like he's such a kind hearted boy and he's had issues at school when he was in kindergarten with bullying and he refused to tell on them because he didn't want to get them in trouble. Whereas Stevie, also the most kind, gentle person. Like she will compliment everyone.

And, like, especially with friendships or relationships, I know I'm going into, like, such high expectations of the other person because I am gonna put forth, like, my best self. But confidence, like, having the confidence to, like, never. You always say, like, the most confident people are, like, the first ones to compliment you because you're happy for other people, because you're so happy for yourself. Like, yes, I'm happy for myself. Why would I not be happy for other people? And conf. Or what is it the saying? It's like, jealousy is a thief of joy.

I've heard that since the day I started. Like. Like, I'm a small fish in a very big pond. There's so much more water to be swam in. Like, it doesn't even matter if you're a big fish. It's still a big pond.

It's still a big pond. There's still a piece of the pie for everybody. Like, it's never been the type of industry where it's limited in how many people can shine. And also, there's, like, a lot of benefit in, like, finding friends that do the same thing. And, like, also, you innately start to hang out with people because you're on the same trips or you're, like, going to the same events and stuff. So. So you become really close with these people. And, like, there are times where, like, my friends are so up, you know, and, like, my content's flopping, then it's the. The ladder, the next month or whatever. So the in betweens of, like, oh, she got this.

It always ebbs and flows.

Yeah.

Also, it's nice to have creator friends that don't have that weird jealousy comparison competition because you can go to them and be like. Like, ask for advice or pick their brain.

Yeah. I would really. I would love to credit, like, all of my creator friends genuinely, that have, like, asked and answered my questions along the way because it's such uncharted territory. Oh, My God, especially just like showing up to an event like your name being on a. I've never experienced like my name was on a list and like, you know who I am when I come to the door, stuff like that. Like you're navigating it alone very much because it's your account, it's your social media. Like you are the person, the point person showing your life. So it's a lot to navigate and I really, I love my friends down in the industry that have like answered all the questions I have because I've had a lot.

No gatekeeping. No, there's some weird gatekeepers out there.

There are certain, like, yeah, no, literally there are certain like details I'm sure that you know, like that just have to be kept private about your own business and stuff. But like, I really never understood the whole, like, let's not be transparent about what people are making. Because it is a scale. Yes. Right. Like it's always been. Yes, A ratio has always been a scale. Like basically following and is this brand

taking advantage of me?

Exactly, exactly. Because earlier on I wish I had somebody like a little bit more secure or knowledgeable in my corner to tell me not to make these mistakes. But learning through them is also beneficial. Like even if you kind of get knocked down business wise, it's like good to know so it doesn't happen again.

Oh, for sure. What advice would you give to girls in their 20s struggling in their girlfriend friendships or relationships?

[Dana A. Rhodes]

I feel like people think that like friendships are supposed to be forever and I do think friends are supposed to be forever. But I don't think that certain friends are supposed to serve you at certain points in your life or they can only serve you for so long. Like I feel like being in this industry, I have unfortunately, like, I don't mean to sound big headed but like outgrown people or like gone in a different path in life than we had planned as friends. And like, yes, that's a sort of betrayal because like we had these plans together or like you dream of like living next to your friends. And then I moved away and like now I'm not super close to my home friend or yada yada. Like people serve you at different points in your life and you just have to be kind of like aware of it, complacent with it and like respectful after the fact. I feel like if you have like a falling out with a friend, it can kind of feel like a breakup. Like I feel like it can kind of be harder than like navigating male relationships. Or like romantic relationships. And the, the amicable part of it is like so crucial in saying that friendship is forever because if we're not amicable, then we're not really friends anymore. And like, there's no reason to not be amicable. We served each other for as long as we needed to, we loved each other, you know, we had good intentions. And I feel like carrying that into like, like the aftermath of a friendship breakup or a falling out or even just like parting ways. Like you move away and you don't communicate as often or whatever, like the amicability and not like creating an issue after or like looking for things to say like this is why our friendship's over and yada yada is very important, very important and like just moving on or like getting peace.

I think as women we go through so many different stages in our life life. And it's the same thing that you hear when people have kids and they're like all of my friends that don't have kids, like they don't check in on me. We have different lives. And it's like you're in such a different phase of life and I'm not excusing that at all. But you have to be willing to grow together and to adjust your life based off what the other person needs and vice versa. But you also have to be able to fill your own cup. And like, you can't be putting all this effort forward and pouring into someone else's cup and it's not repaying back to you. And I think as you get older, you really find a new appreciation for that reciprocation and people going out of their way to check on you like you do for them. And it's been like for me, I feel very, very fortunate that I've had the same people in my life forever. Like our closest friends I've known since junior high, you know, and like before I was ever anything. Because that's another thing too. When you find success, it's wild how eye opening it is for people, family, friends that completely leave you behind, want nothing to do with it, or are very upset at your success. And that's a very interesting thing to experience. But when I have like my stagnant people, it keeps me grounded, keeps me humble. But then I feel like the new friends I've made is in a new stage of life where I meet them through the kids school, you know, like now I'm making friends with my kids friend's parents because we go to the same school, they're gonna be together from 5 years old until they graduate high school. And that's a totally different eye opening experience too because they don't do social media. They're not.

But your real lives are way more parallel too. So it's a little bit more relatable.

[Avery Woods]

Yes. And also focusing on the important things of life and that's putting my phone down and living for the relationships that are in real life that fulfill me and my family and not just the social media relationships.

Yeah, yeah, for sure. I always say like friendship is the most unconditional kind of love because there's no blood related and you have no commitment like a spouse. You don't get like sexual love or anything like that out of your friends. So it really is the most unconditional because there are going to be times where your friends can give more than you can or you can give more than your friends can. And feeling that reciprocation is like what you value in a friendship. Especially when you get older and it kind of gets more scarce because people are so busy. Like, like literally just this morning I was on the phone with my friend. I called her cuz I was like so nervous to come on here. Honestly I was like, I just need someone like to like mellow me out. She's like the chillest girl. She's got engaged. Last weekend she asked me to be her maid of honor. So now I'm sobbing, I'm like literally sobbing my makeup anyway. But yeah, she like, she has shown me what like unconditional friendship love is. We've been friends for like 10 years and we just like teeter totter. Like she can give more one day. I can give more anymore. It is a relationship like you have to like nurture it and cater it. But you can't take things personally when it gets like you don't feel that reciprocation anymore. Like life gets busy for both of us and like if I don't talk to you for a couple weeks, I girl, I better be able to just pick up the phone and call you and pick back up where we start. Like that's friendship. You know what I mean? If you take it personally that I didn't speak to you for a couple weeks, I'm not your mom, I'm not your man. Like, but I got you. If he breaks your heart. I'm, I'm the shoulder you cry on. Like things like that. I support you in your big moments and I'm there, I'm there, I'm always there. We're always here. But I'M not always like, yeah, you know, that's. That's friendship in your 20s.

Yeah. And you also have to be able to serve yourself and do your job and for sure, you know.

And my friends, like, at home, like, I. I have very, like, off, offline friends. Like, I have more offline friends than I do online. And they're like, they have no idea what this world is. Like. So, like, they'll call me and be like, where are you? I'm like, like, I don't know.

And she came to an event with me in New York and it was a nighttime event. And like anyone who goes to a nighttime event in New York, like, you know, just wear black.
